CEO’S REPORT the Club’s history. While we did experience a small downturn in trade towards the back end of 2016 when the carpark excavation was in full swing, as the heavy demolition work was completed and Bakehouse Café opened, we have seen our trade return. The new car park continues to progress upwards and at the time of writing the builders were up to the 4th (of 5) level. After staring down into a deep hole just a few months ago it is amazing that now we’re only a couple of months away from the car park being built back up to ground level. Once the structure has been completed, the builders will commence the lengthy fitout process including the lifts before reinstating the Club’s beautiful gardens on top. When the car park has topped out work will also commence to extend the Club at the front to construct the new outdoor dining terrace and outdoor lounge above. Along with the work that Members can see, there has been a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes to future proof the Club and set us up for developments beyond this project. The last of the temporary support structures in the driveway entrance have been removed and Members now have unimpeded access into the car park. A new diesel generator has been installed on the roof to ensure continuity of operations during power outages and we are in the final stages of commissioning a new air conditioning system, which will ensure that the Club can sustain a comfortable ambience even during the hottest of summers. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums, In June Canterbury League Club will celebrate our 60th Anniversary. We’ve come a long way since the Club first commenced trading out of a small wooden ex-navy hut on Collins Street. Over the last 60 years this visionary Club has grown to become one of the leading hospitality businesses in Australia and as we pass the halfway point in our most ambitious development to date, our commitment to continue to adapt and evolve is set to sustain us well into the future. In March we held our Annual General Meeting where I presented our trading results for the last financial year. Despite significant construction works around the Club throughout the year, we were able to post another excellent result, with a profit of $12.33 million. This result was one of the best in

We are very excited about the potential of this fantastic property and can’t wait to unlock it. We are anticipating getting underway with the building works midyear with a view to having the entire project completed later in the year. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

AN EARLY IDEA TAKES ROOT The idea to form a League Club for the members of the Canterbury Bankstown Football Club germinated early on but it was only in July 1956 that it took physical shape. One of the deciding factors to form a separate League Club was so that it could support the efforts of the Football Club as well as the propagation and encouragement of rugby league in the CanterburyBankstown area through local schools and junior sports. The space would also provide an excellent meeting place for members of the community to gather. After looking at many locations, the Football Club purchased a former Salvation Army Hall at 7 Collins Street, Belmore for the princely sum of $3,500.

A foundation committee was set up to manage the entire process and they weren’t strangers to the hard labour required to convert the hall into a usable club; removing walls, installing a bar and a single toilet. Once renovations were completed, the new League Club could barely keep with the demand for membership and grew rapidly over the next few months. While the enjoyable times of the original League Club unfolded under the watchful and tolerant eyes of the authorities, the founding committee realised that they needed to plan for a more permanent structure if they were to obtain an official liquor licence. The club was bursting at the seams, especially after work, and there was many a time when the kegs ran dry.
At the same time the Rushcutters Bay Naval Depot was in the process of closing and a number of wartime buildings were being sold by tender. In January 1957 the committee saw the opportunity to purchase one of the large wooden structures, affectionately known as ‘The Hut’, for $800 and convert it into a bigger club space. It was a great distance between Rushcutters Bay and Belmore, not to mention the massive task of dismantling and re-assembling the building, but through sheer community spirit and motivation of the men involved, the structure was successfully transported to Belmore. The new club opened on 6 June 1957, this time fully-licensed, and without much fanfare but with great enthusiasm from the membership.
The committee set about raising $50,000 to help refurbish the club and money came from club member debentures and a bank loan. The cost of outfitting the club was almost $60,000 – a large investment in those days when the highest paid rugby league players were earning $2,000 a season. In that first year of trade, the original membership reached 292 and there were no Board elections as the first CanterburyBankstown League Club seven-man board was handpicked from the existing committee: Frank Stewart (President), Ken Charlton (Secretary), George Whitmore (Treasurer), Eddie Burns, Bill Treuer, Norm Dunn and Jack Eedy. It didn’t take very long for the League Club to outgrow ‘The Hut’ too and the Board had to once again consider bigger quarters. During those times, Belmore had two picture theatres, Paragon No.1 on Bridge Road and Paragon No.2 at the end of Burwood Road near Belmore High School, which opened in 1923 and 1928 respectively.

The impact of television at that time meant that attendance at picture theatres was dropping so it wasn’t difficult to persuade Greater Union Theatres, who owned both theatres, to sell Paragon No.1 Theatre. Not wanting to miss out on this momentous opportunity, the Board didn’t have the time to get all seven board members together. There were already five on the club premise when the offer for Paragon No.1 Theatre came through and after a hurried meeting in the rear lobby, a decision was made to offer $34,000 for the building on Bridge Road in November 1958. The theatre showed its final program, Riding Shotgun and Young At Heart, later that month on 28 November 1958 before its doors finally closed. Architect Alan Eedy, who worked on the original club, was appointed to draw up plans for the new Bridge Road club which included refurbishing the interiors as well as underground excavations to form a beer cellar. Trade continued out of ‘The Hut’ until 17 April 1960 while renovations at Paragon No.1 were happening.

CLUB MEMBERSHIPS BLOSSOM On 12 April 1960 the club’s liquor license transferred from the Collins Street premise to the newly-converted Club which was officially opened on 14 May 1960. In 1961 the next stage of development was to buy the billiard hall and the block of flats in between, which pre-war, had been the site of a mini golf course.

From such small roots, Canterbury League Club has only grown from strength to strength. Each year, there was a waiting list of a few hundred people wanting to become members. As trade continued at a profitable rate, membership grew eightfold by 1960 when the club had 1,657 members.

GROWING FOR THE FUTURE 9 August 1963 saw the start of another adventurous expansion program which continued for the next year and saw the floor space double to accommodate a larger Mixed Lounge area, a new Dining Room, more space for indoor sports clubs, and a much bigger auditorium with a bigger seating capacity on the top floor. The new amenities were officially opened on 26 September 1964. By 1965, the League Club already had 5,940 members which quickly jumped to 8,000 by the next year. The Club’s popularity increased throughout the decade resulting in another construction program at the start of the 70s – one of the club’s most ambitious costing just shy of $800,000 – to build a gym, sauna, massage and change rooms. The basement area was converted into a Mixed Lounge area, the Members’ Lounge and Dining Room capacity was increased, and a new cocktail lounge was built. Another adventurous expansion and modernisation program started at the end of 1978 to build a three storey car park with 326 car spaces behind the existing club to cater for increased membership. It was also at this time that the Canterbury Board committed to construct and erect the grandstand at Belmore Sports Ground. Internally, work on a new Chinese restaurant called China Plate, a new entertainment lounge, a private function room and additions to the bistro were undertaken.

GROWING FOR THE FUTURE (continued) Throughout the 80s the Club underwent many minor alterations including updating the former Gladstone Street foyer, upgrading the bistro, opening of Lasers Nightclub which operated three separate areas with different themes – Manhattan Piano Bar, Johnnies Rock and Roll Bar and Restaurant, and Lasers; and building two additional car park levels on top of the existing one behind the Club.

Some of the more memorable major expansions that occurred at Canterbury were the ones in the early 90s and the again in the early 2000s. In May 1990, workers broke ground on a $8 million major renovation which included recladding the exterior of the building with glass windows, altering parking arrangements and a new car access ramp, extending the floor space area, and building a new foyer, coffee shop, restaurant, bistro and the Blueberry Hill room. By the time most of the construction finished in 1992, Canterbury had sealed the finishing touches to cement itself as one of the most prestigious clubs in the state.

BRANCHING OUT TO THE NEW MILLENNIUM The next major expansion program to prepare Canterbury for a new century started in mid 1999 with work beginning on an external volcano water feature and outdoor landscaping which has become the iconic symbol of the Club. The volcano feature, which was completed at the end of 2000, was just the start of the ambitious program which also included a completely revamped foyer with a large jungle atrium and external glass lift, a new 400 seat bistro and a new Chinese restaurant called The Dynasty. This particular expansion laid the foundation to rejuvenate the Western wing of the Club and it still stands today. By the time work finished on that wing at the start of 2002, the ‘old’ had been completely transformed into the ‘new’, full of the highest quality finishes to create a space washed with light and grandeur thanks to the soaring glass-domed ceiling above the atrium. Entry to the Club was via a sweeping drive that ran underneath a porte cochère clad in beautiful sandstone tiles, continuing a theme of cream, gold and rich colours throughout the internal décor. Previous management research trips to visit top hospitality venues in Las Vegas, including The Mirage Casino which was at that time the best casino in the world, had shaped the overall design brief which would propel Canterbury to new levels in club facilities and entertainment. Progress didn’t stop there though; in 2005 redevelopment started again to reenergise the Northern end of the Club and complete a total makeover of the “old club’s” ground floor following the opening of the new wing three years prior. The former upstairs auditorium was renovated into a new function space and the old main bar and coffee shop was transformed into a spacious health club to cope with rising membership numbers. This renovation, which was completed at the end of 2007, gave us the current Paragon Room, C-Life Health Club, Bulldogs Sports Bar, Terrace Bar and Flame Pizza + Grill restaurant that patrons see now.

The most recent development started at the end of 2014 and is continuing – a redevelopment to the tune of approximately $130 million. This round of renovations has so far offered Members a completely new dining offering, Bakehouse
Café, and set the foundation to future proof the Club including building new basement production kitchens and a multistorey underground car park at the front of the Club.

Throughout Canterbury’s long 60-year history, the Club has weathered many things; aside from the original club expanding, it has also seen the coming and goings of food trends, changes to government tax reforms and laws, and Belmore’s evolving demographics. We’ve watched the Bulldogs fight valiantly in multiple Grand Finals, cried tears of joy when they won and cried more tears when they’ve lost. Within the club industry, Canterbury has experienced the highest highs and has done much to overcome the lows by consistently following three essential values – our commitment to good governance, our core values to always put our Members first and to provide them with exceptional customer service and lastly, but not least, our loyal staff members who have made things possible. - Dr George Peponis OAM and current Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

PRELIMINARY WORK AT THE FRONT HAS STARTED Canterbury’s $130 million redevelopment has successfully passed the half way mark, with over sixty per cent of the build now completed according to Cerno Management and Parkview Group. Focus has now shifted to the preliminary works at the front of the Club on the Western side with workers currently demolishing the space to make way for the bistro extension where the former loading dock used to be. Due to the construction, Galaxy Play Area ceased operating and will reopen nearby once the extension program is complete.

A lot of progress has also happened within the hole at the front of Canterbury; basement level through to level three have had the concrete poured and workers have already started building the next level above it. The new underground car park will provide an extra 500 spaces approximately and have parking number indicators for the convenience of Members and guests. Once all the levels have been built then landscapers will take over to beautify the grounds and replant the gardens. “Canterbury is delighted to report to the Members that the construction program is well-advanced and more than half way completed. For Members who haven’t visited recently, I highly recommend coming to see the new changes for yourself and take the time to try out the new Bakehouse Café – we have received a lot of positive feedback about the food and coffee,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

COMMUNITY In a first ever, Canterbury League Club, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, Campsie RSL and The Lantern Club have combined resources to help 50 primary school children with learning difficulties improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Using a pooled donation of $50,000 the four clubs have partnered with Learning Links, a service organisation which helps children with learning disabilities, to deliver programs to four local schools – Lakemba Primary School, McCallums Hill Primary School, Canterbury Primary School and Croydon Park Primary School. In a show of positive community spirit, the program will also be using staff volunteers from all four clubs who will be trained to become Reading and Counting Buddies; they will meet with children in Years 3 to 5 once a week for 10 to 15 weeks and play interactive learning games which aim to develop the child’s literacy and numeracy skills.
LOCAL CANTERBURY CLUBS JOINING FORCES TO TACKLE CHILDREN’S LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
“It’s wonderful to see these four Clubs come together to help combat a real and very serious issue faced by children and educators in their local communities,” said Birgitte Maibom, CEO of Learning Links. Today in Australia approximately 10% of children have a learning difficulty and struggle in the classroom where teachers are hardpressed to meet the needs of all their charges. With minimal financial support available for them, many children never receive the help and intervention they need to stop them falling behind. “Each of our clubs could have gone ahead with individual projects but we have a much greater impact across a wider geographical distance by working together – we’d reach more schools and more children. It is a very solemn issue when kids going into high school don’t have the numeracy and literacy skills to get them through,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
“This collaboration is the first that we’ve done with the other clubs and we are excited to see the results. It just goes to show what can be achieved when clubs in the community come together and become a driving force in improving the education outcomes of children living in the area.”

Canterbury has always had a longstanding tradition of serving great quality Chinese food since April 1979. The Dynasty continues this tradition of providing authentic Asian dining experiences since it opened in 2002. The man at the helm, Eric Chu, has been with the restaurant since day one, firstly as Head Chef managing the chef team in the kitchen, before taking on the position as Restaurant Manager.

C-LIFE IS TURNING 15! In a year full of milestones, C-Life Health Club is also celebrating a special occasion of its own – turning 15! Of course, there are too many memorable moments over the years to list them all, but here are a few noteworthy mentions: Canterbury has always had a gym since 1968 when the Club made the decision to excavate the basement area to turn it into a gym, sauna, massage and change rooms. Since then there has always been a gym of some form though the space and equipment has evolved as the years went by. When C-Life Health Club first started in late 2002 it was called the ‘Canterbury Health Club’ and it was located on the same floor as the squash courts. The gym’s creche operated
on the second level and all six group fitness classes were running in a separate room altogether! While it remained there for the better part of seven years, the Health Club was home to 500 members in its first year of operation. Today, there are over 2,800 members who are part of the C-Life family. By the end of 2007, C-Life had relocated to its current space which used to be occupied by the old main bar and coffee shop. After just under a decade at its new location and a change of name, C-Life now boasts over 80 group fitness classes, a vast array of state of the art equipment and is home to a team of 15 personal trainers, alongside several administrative, marketing, management, sales and crèche staff.

CONGRATULATIONS ODILE! On Sunday 12 March a very big crowd gathered at The Lakemba Club for the draw of the $10,000 Electrical & Whitegoods promotion. that person was local resident, Odile Kazzi! My brother, Richard, and I are both full time coaches and we coach all ages from about 4 years old through to clients in their 60's – we have coaching sessions 7 days a week. Aside from basic/intermediate coaching which will get you through a fun game of social tennis, we also offer high-level tennis coaching involving advanced technique, fitness and mental training. How much does it cost for a lesson? We offer 1 hour group lessons from $15 per hour and 1 hour private lessons starting at $70 per hour. We also have a few squads for the more advanced players which go for approximately 90 minutes to 2.5 hours including fitness.

INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS AND GUESTS FOOD AND BEVERAGES Patrons are not permitted to bring or remove food and beverages from the club unless prior arrangement has been made with management. DRESS REGULATIONS Canterbury provides a comfortable environment where patrons are able to enjoy their surroundings and use of club facilities without disruption from others that are inappropriately dressed or behave in an unacceptable manner. To ensure patron compliance with these principles, standards have been set for dress and behaviour. ACCEPTABLE ATTIRE: • Neat, clean and tidy casual wear (no large tears or holes) • Tracksuits (top and/or bottom) • Overalls and work boots (must be clean) up to 9.00pm • Football shorts/stubbies of modest length and appearance up to 9.00pm • Dress sandals, boat shoes and scuffs - up to 9.00pm • Casual and sports shoes to be worn with socks • Dress shirts without collars (includes ‘T’ shirts) • Clean and tidy Football jerseys at anytime • Singlets and sleeveless shirts permitted in C-Life Health Club and whilst entering and leaving the Foyer • Caps are permitted to be worn in C-Life only UNACCEPTABLE ATTIRE (not permitted at anytime): • Bare feet or rubber thongs • Untidy and/or dirty clothing or footwear • Singlets (excludes ladies apparel) • Offensive motifs or imagery on clothing • Gang patches or other insignia on clothing • Swimwear or revealing clothing • Helmets, hats, caps, beanies and bandanas other than for medical or religious reasons (facial features must be visible) • Offensive personal hygiene
GENERAL REGULATIONS • Interpretation of the Dress Rules is at the discretion of Duty Management. • Persons under 18 years are permitted in certain area’s (restaurants) of the club however, must be in the company of a “responsible adult” at all times. • Children are not permitted on Club premises between the hours of 12 midnight and 6:00am and (unless attending a member’s private event/ function). • Children are not permitted to enter the Club premises after 10:00pm each night. • Children are only permitted on Club premises after 10:00pm if they are dining in one of the Club’s restaurants or café’s and must vacate the Club immediately at the conclusion of their dining. • Children may be permitted to enter the premises after 10:00pm for the purpose of attending special events as determined by Management. • Proof of Age and Residential Qualification are required for Temporary Members and Member’s Guests. • Club members are required to produce their Membership Card upon entry and/or when requested to do so by Duty Management. • Management reserves the right to refuse entry to any person not conforming with licensing or club regulations. • Patrons who are intoxicated, abusive, violent or quarrelsome will be requested to leave and may be subject to disciplinary action. • Patrons requested to leave the club by Duty Management must leave the premises immediately and not return within a 24-hour period or if deemed necessary may be suspended and subject to disciplinary action.
PHOTOGRAPHS The privacy of members and visitors is important. Members and guests are more than welcome to take photos of the club or their meal, however, it is requested the privacy of other patrons be respected and photos of them are not taken. LOST MEMBERSHIP CARDS Members who misplace their membership cards should report their loss to the membership desk at their earliest opportunity.
