CEO’S REPORT commenced. We have installed fixed cameras to capture the work and you can find various updates and time lapse videos of the work as it progresses on our website and social media channels. Inside the Club work continues to progress on the Club’s exciting new restaurant ‘The Bistro’. Stage one of The Bistro will be open shortly, which will include a brand new kitchen and a fully refurbished internal seating area. Stage two featuring the huge new al fresco area has also commenced production and will open later in 2018. The new escalator from the foyer to level one has been installed and is presently in the process of being commissioned. It will open later this year. On level one work continues in earnest and the brand new bathrooms opened in October.
Welcome to the festive season at Canterbury. In my last report I advised that we were in the process of opening a brand new Italian Restaurant. I am pleased to report that in September the new Lavico Italian Ristorante opened and the initial feedback and trading results have been extremely positive. The name ‘Lavico’, which means lava in Italian is a nod to the Club’s iconic volcano water feature which the restaurant overlooks. The Lavico menu features a mouth-watering selection of classic Italian dishes, the majority of which are Executive Chef Stephanie Azar’s personal recipes handed down to her from some of the Italian families she learnt her trade from. Out the front of the Club you will notice that the covered walkway has been taken down and the fixed crane has now been removed. Workers are busy fitting out the car park internally and up on top the enormous project to construct the new driveway, pathways and beautiful gardens has
The redevelopment of Moxon Sports Club has commenced and will be open shortly. At a cost of more than $3 million, the redeveloped club in the heart of Punchbowl is sure to be a huge hit with Canterbury Members and locals alike. At the time of writing we are in the process of interviewing for a new caterer, with the new restaurant to provide a modern bistro menu when the club reopens. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I would like to wish all of our Members a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Christmas at Canterbury is always a special occasion with some of Sydney’s most beautiful decorations adorning the Club. From 6th to 22nd December Santa and his helper will visit the Club each night to discuss all things naughty and nice and have their photo taken with the kids, while everyone can enjoy wonderful Christmas Carols live in the foyer from the 17th December. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT
Front section of the Club will extend forward several meters up to the new driveway leading out from the underground car park
LOTS OF CONSTRUCTION HAPPENING AT THE WESTERN WING Since the last magazine, work has really ramped up and there has been a lot of progress on all construction areas at the Western wing of the Club. New bathrooms on the first floor were unveiled several weeks ago – there are now even more toilets in the male and female section, sleek golden doors which open to the disabled toilet cubicle and grand floor-to-ceiling water features near the wash basins. On the Western side, work to raise the roof of the building has been completed – at the front section of the first floor, the roof now steps up from three to five meters. The extra height noticeably increases the amount of light streaming into the Club and also allows for large dramatic ceiling decorations and lighting to be installed soon.
Moving on to the basement level, the new underground basement kitchen, storage and cool rooms have now been built underneath The Bistro. Tradespeople will continue to come through to finish extra services like electrical wiring, tiling and painting, installing cool room motors and final kitchen equipment. The new kitchen will be delivered at the same time as stage 1 of The Bistro opens to provide extra support to the main kitchen during peak trade. Read more on The Bistro construction work on page 12. The driveway leading into the multistorey car park behind the Club has also had some traffic diverted as builders demolish the left-side lane in order to free up space to build an underground concrete column which will support the new building above it.
You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. CanterburyLeaguesClub @Canterbury_LC

COMMUNITY
Winners of the RAVE awards for exhibiting Canterbury’s CARE values together with Canterbury Chairman Dr George Peponis and CEO Dave Brace
RECOGNISING STAFF AT 2017 STAFF AWARDS NIGHT Early in September, Canterbury League Club celebrated the achievements and service of 45 staff members at their annual Staff Awards Night. In the beautifully-decorated Paragon Room, Canterbury recognised staff members who reached five-year service milestones with award recipients coming from various departments including Food and Beverage, Gaming, Marketing, Security and Surveillance, C-Life, and Reception. Aside from honouring service milestones, Canterbury also recognised employees
who have exhibited the Club’s core values of Courtesy, Attentiveness, Responsiveness and Excellence throughout the past year. The four award recipients (pictured above) were Bradley Mackney, Julie Gesovska, George Kouroumalis and Paul Ware. Canterbury’s Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Alison Daniell for her commitment to helping in the community – in addition to the award, she also got to nominate a charity that the Club donated $500 to on her behalf. This year Alison chose The Heart Foundation, leaders in heart disease prevention and
research, because she has had close family members pass away from heart conditions. “This Club wouldn’t exist without the amazing dedication and loyalty of our staff members who consistently uphold the values which make Canterbury an iconic destination. Congratulations to everyone who received awards on the night – I look forward to giving more out in the years to come,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury.
CANTERBURY TAKES OUT THE TOP SPOT Canterbury League Club was announced as the winner of a ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Award at the recent awards night on 15 October 2017 in recognition of the Club’s work to feed the homeless in the city with local Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission. Awards in nine different categories were up for grabs on the night, with the category of ‘Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion’ being the most highlycontested with projects from 22 other
clubs in the running. It was a dazzling gala night attended by 1,100 industry leaders, board members and colleagues. “This award wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of staff who volunteer every month, the chef team who prepare the nutritious meals, the HR team for coordinating and all other staff involved – thank you to ClubsNSW for this amazing recognition of our staff and our community work,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury.

At last check, the Western side escalators have been demolished and replaced with new ones. Builders have shifted the angle which connects the two floors so now Members and guests will be able to enjoy the convenience of escalators that run all the way to the ground floor.
Whilst the new restaurant is being built, Canterbury’s Chef Team have already been hard at work creating The Bistro’s new menu and taste-testing it –the menu will have some classic favourites done with a twist and lots of exciting new gastro-pub style dishes from around the globe. Final menus will be released closer to The Bistro being completed so make sure to keep an eye out for them on Canterbury’s website.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH Congratulations to our Member of the Month, Amany El Baf! Amany has been a C-Life Member since October 2016, completing one of the most remarkable transformations we’ve seen in the past 12 months.
BEFORE
She knew change was needed immediately when she hit 130kg on the scales. With her fellow C-Life partner in crime, Hanan Minkara by her side to give her ongoing support and guidance, she started exercising regularly at C-Life. It took 6 months for her to drop the first 10kg, however this proved to be the turning point for Amany adopting a healthier lifestyle and structured routine. Amany worked together with Personal Trainers Ray and Noor which also helped her shed a further 14kg. With regular participation in the Blitz, Boxing and Pump classes conducted by trainers George B and Steve, and continued Personal Training with Ray and Noor, Amany lost a further 36kg. This fighting fit chick proudly describes her greatest accomplishment as being able to lose the bodyweight of her friend Hanan (60kg) and 7 dress sizes in total, as well as being able to run the Sun Herald City to Surf non-stop. She left us with an inspiring quote – “With a little determination, a lot of focus and the right people by your side, you can conquer anything.”
AFTER
Congratulations on your astounding achievements Amany!

MOXON CONSTRUCTION IN FULL SWING Since September, Moxon Sports Club has been knee-deep in a $3 million renovation which will completely transform the building by the time it is complete. First to go was the carpet and soft furnishings; workers have also demolished the former toilets, kitchen and back-of-house walls in order to make space for the new design layout.
Work that will be carried out inside the club includes a brand new entrance area, loading dock, new outdoor breakout area, new external seating and toilets. Moxon Sports Club will also open with a brand new restaurant and location. The kitchen has moved from the left side of the bar to the right side and there is plenty of seating nearby. More details will be released closer to Club’s opening.
Externally, two of the six tennis courts were recently resurfaced with artificial turf. Tonnes of sand was used to weigh down the surface of the court, provide a good playing surface and act as proper drainage. Players interested to book tennis courts or lessons can contact Kellert Tennis Academy on 0412 636 461.
