CEO’S REPORT Bistro’. During construction of ‘The Bistro’ we will be opening Banyan Lite, a pop up kitchen and restaurant located in the internal seating and servery section of the existing Banyan Brasserie. Banyan Lite will be open on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday and will offer a selection of your favourite meals from the existing Banyan menu. Work has also commenced in the foyer to replace the Western side escalator with a new escalator which will run all the way to the ground level. During this work there will be very little disruption and you will be able to access the first floor via the existing stairs, the Eastern-side escalator or the lifts. We have recently conducted a review of the Club’s restaurant portfolio which included an analysis of external dining trends and a review of our own research of Members and local residents. The review indicated that there was overwhelming support for a restaurant that served Italian cuisine. As a result, we will shortly be converting the existing Flame Pizza + Grill into a traditional Italian restaurant. At the time of going to print, details had yet to be finalised but keep an eye on our website and social media pages for news of this exciting new outlet.

Dear Members, To all the dads out there, Happy Father’s Day. The last few months have seen some real progress with the Club’s redevelopment with construction on several fronts. The carpark structure has been completed and the internal fitout is well underway. The lower levels of the carpark have been painted and some of the services such as lighting and sprinklers installed. Over the next few months we will see the fitout continue throughout the other levels while the lifts are installed and the gardens and landscaping reinstated on top of the car park. Inside the Club the Banyan Brasserie will be closing this month to commence the build of the Club’s new restaurant ‘The

We have recently lodged a Development Application to refurbish the Canterbury Bankstown Tennis & Bowls Club. To enable the redevelopment to be undertaken in the quickest possible time, we will be closing the existing club to accommodate the building works. The new club will be renamed Moxon Sports Club and will feature a modern bar, lounge and restaurant. It is anticipated to be completed later this year if there are no major issues. In the meantime, the club’s sporting facilities including the tennis courts and bowling greens will continue to operate as per normal and will be serviced by temporary measures. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

DEVELOPMENT

Construction progress around the club

BANYAN CLOSES ITS DOORS TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW RESTAURANT In September, workers will move in to start demolishing the Banyan Brasserie to make way for a brand new restaurant called ‘The Bistro’. Read more about the exciting new changes coming to Canterbury on page 10.

To service the new underground car park, a glass lift will be installed at the front of the Club that will arrive on the edge of the lush new gardens. Guests will be able to enjoy the view before making their way into Canterbury.

In other development news, construction of the underground car park at the front of the Club is going at a cracking pace. Workers have finished building up the five basement levels and are now in the process of curing the concrete roof which forms the level ground for landscaping to be installed. It is a complicated process with many levels to form and intricate stepped planter boxes. Beautiful flowers and trees will eventually be planted in the boxes.

The hive of activity above ground on the car park is matched by the activity that is happening underneath it – workers are fitting out services in Basement Levels 5, 4 and 3 including hydraulic pipe works, lights, mechanical exhaust fans to pull air from the basements, fire sprinklers and the new parking guidance system.

4

At the Club’s front entrance, hoarding is going up over the Western side escalators so that workers can safely dismantle

them and remove the landing steps at the base leading up to it. Once the space has been demolished a brand new set of escalators will be installed, angled slightly differently, so that the base will be level to the ground floor to match the design of the Eastern side escalators as well as to ensure the safety of our Members and guests. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by following our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. COMMUNITY

17 LOCAL ORGANISATIONS SHARE $208,786 FUNDING POOL Canterbury League Club has always been a large community supporter and this year is no different with 17 local organisations sharing a local area ClubGrants funding pool of $208,786. Local organisations use the funding to run specific health and social welfare programs that assist different groups in need within the local community. Some of this year’s recipients include Canterbury Hospital to purchase a new skin graft tool, Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation to buy a new Pick Me Up vehicle to shuttle clients to their doctor’s appointments, Life Education’s Healthy Harold program visiting kids at local schools, and to purchase a new freezer for Canterbury Meals on Wheels. In a major milestone, Canterbury’s successful partnership in conjunction with other local clubs to work with Learning Links to tackle literacy and numeracy has been increased for 2018. This additional funding will allow Learning Links to take on additional schools in the

area and help even more children with learning difficulties improve their literacy and numeracy. Other organisations who have benefitted this year from the ClubGrants program include Miracle Babies, Youth Off The Streets, Horizon Theatre, The Northcott Society, and Koorana Child & Family Services.

“Every year Canterbury donates over $1 million to approximately 120 different recipients who use this money to fund vital programs within the local community which tackle a range of issues like children’s obesity, disconnected youth, and caring for seniors and people with disabilities,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

CANTERBURY FINALISTS IN THREE COMMUNITY CATEGORIES In an amazing achievement, Canterbury has been recognised as a finalist in three different categories in the 2017 ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards. The projects Canterbury is nominated for this year are ‘Feeding the Homeless’ with Maronites on Mission (Health & Wellbeing), ‘Thriving not Surviving’ health program with One Door Mental Health

(Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion) and ‘Canterbury Learning Links’ program with Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, Campsie RSL and The Lantern Club (Clubs in Collaboration). Winners will be announced at the ClubsNSW Awards Dinner on Sunday 15 October.

“This is the first time Canterbury has been nominated as a finalist in three different categories and we are very appreciative of the recognition of our work in the community. Thank you to ClubsNSW for this nomination and I wish everyone the best of luck at the awards dinner,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

How the al fresco seating of The Bistro will look after construction

WORK TO COMMENCE ON A BRAND NEW RESTAURANT - THE BISTRO Banyan Brasserie will shortly be closed to make way for a brand new restaurant called The Bistro. The Bistro will offer approximately 700 seats in a combination of internal and al fresco seating, about double the 390 seating capacity of the existing Banyan Brasserie. The Bistro will offer an exciting full cook-to-order menu featuring everything from classic club favourites to the latest on-trend dishes from across the globe. It will also have a new modern and contemporary fitout and a children’s play area. The Bistro will be delivered in two stages, with the first stage being the new kitchen and internal area, to be followed by the large al fresco section. At the same time, builders will also be demolishing and refurbishing the bathrooms near the former Galaxy Play area as well as updating the back-of-house kitchen. Underneath the West wing of the Club, the space that was previously excavated a while ago to form the new

underground loading dock, storage and cool rooms will now be joined by another basement commercial production kitchen. The new kitchen will be utilised during peak periods to serve The Bistro as well as to prep for events and functions at the Club. While the new restaurant is under construction, Banyan Lite will appear as a pop-up on Friday nights through to Sunday serving a limited menu of club favourites including Chicken Schnitzel, Fish & Chips, and Roast of the Day to name a few. View Banyan Lite’s menu online at canterbury.com.au “We are very excited to introduce our latest offering to our Members and guests after the successful launch of the Bakehouse Café last year. The Bistro is our brand new familyfriendly dining option with an amazing new menu so keep a look out for its opening date in the upcoming months,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

While the new restaurant is under construction, Banyan Lite will be operating as a pop-up restaurant on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday each week serving an express menu of club favourites including Chicken Schnitzel, Fish & Chips and Roast of the Day. MUM REDDY FEELING THE C-LIFE FAMILY LOVE On behalf of all the staff, trainers and members of C-Life, we would like to extend a very special congratulations to Lalli Reddy, also affectionately known as “Mum Reddy”. This month she is celebrating her 10 year anniversary of being in remission from stage 3 breast cancer. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Mum Reddy and listening to her share her story; describing the emotional and physical rollercoaster that was her battle with not only breast cancer, but also having major surgery on her lungs to remove a tumour. You wouldn’t pick that this lovely lady is literally surviving off one lung – a true testament to her strength!

She remains very happy at C-life, seeing her friends as her second family who gives her great joy and happiness, as well as keeping her accountable to her future goals. Special mention to club manager Arthur and the entire C-Life team, who have always been so welcoming and making her feel like the gym is her second home. Lalli wishes to create awareness and hope within other people to fight their own battles no matter what they may be and send them a healthy reminder to remain positive and never forget that they always have a strong support network within the C-Life family.

New layout of Moxon Sports Club

CBTBC GETTING A NEW MAKEOVER AND NEW NAME Canterbury Bankstown Tennis & Bowls Club will shortly close for renovations and undergo a complete makeover from September onwards. The build will take several months and once completed, will reopen with a brand new clubhouse as well as a brand new name – Moxon Sports Club, Canterbury’s newest addition to the family. Since the club amalgamated with Canterbury at the end of last year, plans have been in motion to update the building and its interior. Bergstrom Architects was appointed to draw new plans and the work will be carried out by MPA over the course of several months.

Amongst the new work that will be carried out inside the club includes a brand new entrance area, new backof-house kitchen, bar and toilets, a new loading dock, air-conditioning upgrade, new glazed doors, carpets, paint and new furniture. The internal configuration of the club will also be tweaked slightly for the kitchen to be repositioned on the right hand side of the bar. Externally the front of the clubhouse will be redesigned and clad with warm timber finishes. It will also get a new coat of paint, the car park will be resurfaced, new signage installed, and new landscaping including better irrigation.

During construction the clubhouse will be closed however lawn bowling and tennis facilities will remain open during this time for members to use. “We are very excited to introduce Moxon Sports Club to our Members and guests who will have another amazing venue to visit when they are in the area. For patrons who already visit the club regularly, you’ll be impressed with the new clubhouse once it has been completed and our staff look forward to welcoming you back again,” said Dave Brace, CEO of Canterbury League Club.

GREAT TURNOUT AT MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT On Sunday 11 June, the 10th Bob Fitzpatrick Memorial 2 Bowl Pairs Tournament was held at CBTBC to remember Bob who was a popular local identity and regular patron of the club. There were 28 teams of Pairs competing in the competition on the day. In a random draw, each team played six games and the winning pair was decided by which team won the most games and by the highest aggregate. This year’s winners were Jason Courtin and Laurie Fitzpatrick (Bob’s son) who won themselves the lion’s share of the prizemoney with first place taking out $600. Second place winners won $300, third $150 and fourth $40 with the tournament sponsored by Canterbury League Club.
