CEO’S REPORT The opening of The Bistro play area also coincided with the opening of the remainder of the indoor seating area, with an additional 200 seats now available inside the floor to ceiling glass wall. During the next month we anticipate the remaining area of The Bistro to be completed with the Al Fresco section set to open just in time to start enjoying some Spring outdoor dining. With approximately 650 seats when completed The Bistro is one of Australia’s largest cook to order restaurants, with plenty of capacity to cater for the busiest of nights. There has been much written in the media in recent times about businesses looking to become more environmentally sustainable and Canterbury is no different. Members can now opt-in to receive all your communications electronically via our website. We have recently replaced plastic straws with a biodegradable product and are introducing reusable takeaway coffee cups into The Bakehouse for our regular customers. Even better, you receive a discount on your coffee if you bring your own reusable coffee cup. Dear Members,
I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
As flagged in my last report there are plenty of new areas opening around the Club and you’ll almost certainly see something different every time you visit now. Parents and grandparents will be especially excited to welcome a new play area in The Bistro. Along with a typical play area for younger children we have also installed three retro style arcade machines to keep the kids that have grown out of slippery dips and climbing apparatus happy.

DEVELOPMENT
Enjoy additional seating in the newly completed area of The Bistro
DEVELOPMENT UPDATE You will notice exciting new changes next time you drive into Canterbury League Club. The new carpark has officially opened with 5 levels of parking and there are more than 400 additional new premium spots available for members and guests. Arriving at Canterbury has never been more comfortable with entry to the car park directly off Bridge Road. When you leave your car you will be greeted by background music, beautiful airconditioned lift foyers and a dramatic arrival as you emerge in the glass lift carriage from the car park through the water feature in front of the Club.
When you step out of the lift you will soon be confronted with a completely refurbished volcano water feature and the brand new dazzling LED light show across the towering new Western façade. Inside the Club, the full internal fitout of The Bistro is now complete, with the new children’s play area also now open. The play area includes a slide, climbing equipment and dedicated TV for younger children, while for older children there are now three retro arcade machines with hundreds of classic games available for free play. The new Al Fresco area is also close to completion and will be open shortly.
Construction is well advanced on the new Atrium Bar on level 1 and it is on track to open in the next couple of months. Once complete, this area will provide patrons with a stylish venue, perfect for a pre-show drink with friends or to enjoy a romantic night out with that special someone. With so many new facilities and features being unveiled, Canterbury League Club is the place to be this Spring! You can keep up-to-date with all the latest development news by visiting our website and following our social media pages. Regular updates will also be available in every magazine. COMMUNITY
Local year 4 students learning survival skills and how to spot dangers in the water.
CANTERBURY’S AQUATIC SURVIVAL SKILLS PROGRAM Australia is surrounded by the most pristine waterways and learning how to spot dangers in the water is an essential skill all children must learn. Unfortunately, not all children are provided with the same opportunity to learn about water safety. Canterbury League Club has partnered again this year with Royal Life Saving NSW and Canterbury Bankstown Council to deliver a swim program called the Canterbury Aquatic Survival Skills Program. The swim program has been nominated as a finalist in the 2018 Club and Community Awards in the education category.
6
‘At Canterbury, we have recognised the need within the community to train children to spot the dangers and understand water safety to increase their chances of survival, especially during the warmer months,’ said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
To ensure all students were included in the program, a permission note was translated from English into Arabic, Greek, Mandarin and Vietnamese to aid parents and caregivers to understand the program’s aims.
The program recognised the need within the community as most students have come from a multicultural and low socioeconomic background. Many students miss out on similar programs because of the cost and location.
By having a swim program, it removes the lack of knowledge and provides the children with essential lifesaving skills. The program is inclusive to all students in year four, even those who require wheelchair access are encouraged to participate.
Canterbury League Club covered all costs of the program. This included pool hire, information packs, the program itself and transport to and from the schools and Roselands Aquatic Centre.
Expressions of interest from local primary schools are now being accepted for the 2019 Canterbury Aquatic Survival Skills Program. For more information, please contact marketing@canterbury.com.au
Active Breed is a 12-week men’s health program developed and delivered by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Western Sydney University and the South Western Sydney Primary Health Network. Designed specifically for male football fans, Active Breed is focused on encouraging men to lose weight and improve their physical and mental health. Each week, participants engage in a 90-minute interactive education and exercise session at Bulldogs HQ, led by Active Breed coaches and health experts with support from Bulldogs legends. Education sessions emphasise sustainable behaviour change and cover topics including physical activity, nutrition, mental health, general health and violence prevention. Exercise sessions include touch footy games on the hallowed turf of Belmore Sports Ground and group-based gym workouts in the inner sanctum. Recruitment for the next Active Breed program will commence in September for kick-off in early 2019. MEET OUR NEWEST PERSONAL TRAINER: MELINDA Melinda brings to the team a wealth of experience and a great skill set. What made you decide to look after your health and fitness? The number one reason why I started to train and focus on my health was my love for chocolate. As a young female, I hated the thought of having to buy larger sized clothing. At the time, I was a dancer, so the pressure to stay fit and healthy was important to keep up with the dance routines and costumes. Today, training is about focusing on my mental health and wellbeing. What matters to me the most is feeling good from the inside-out and being confident with my body. Why are you different from other personal trainers in the industry? What sets me apart from other trainers is my attention to detail and my holistic approach when training my clients. As a personal trainer, I don’t just take my clients through exercises. Part of my job entails taking note of my clients’ lifestyle, stress level, sleep patterns, past or current injuries, health
conditions, joint and muscle strength and weaknesses. From there on, I can advise clients on a nutrition and training plan that suits their individual needs. What is your favourite machine in the Health Club? Lat Pull Down – I love a good back workout! What do you love most about working at C-Life? C-Life is much more than a gym! Our staff and lovely members make it a community and a place that is open to all ages and abilities. There’s always something happening at the gym, whether it’s new equipment, a social event or a fundraiser. What is your favourite group exercise class and why? I love training in a group and working as a team to reach fitness goals. The Body Pump class has become one of my favourites along with Blitz and Boxing. I started participating in Body Pump classes and these classes had a huge influence on my passion for resistance training. What is your most inspiring quote that you live by? Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass but learning to dance in the rain.
