CASAMATERA The concept of CasaMatera was born This project in Matera started with the belief that small and medium enterprises cannot become international by only sending their products to global cities around the world. That’s simply not enough. Each step, from the briefing to the development and concepts to the production, involves international minds working together with excellent Italian manufacturers. This will more likely result in a modern sense of what the market wants and succeed internationally. During the week spent in the beautiful city of Matera, 7 international designers went to visit the different companies that were involved into the project: they collaborated with the local entrepreneurs on a series of products that opened their eyes to something bigger. The entire team saw that each artisan could contribute uniquely and effectively. Everyone fit the puzzle.

The designers shared ideas and strategy and they all agreed that it was necessary to find a common purpose under which they could all unify. The goal was to make the whole project stronger and more cohesive. Because everyone was coming from different trades and backgrounds, it was necessary to settle on one main theme. This direction had to remain very open because nobody was sure of what the possibilities of development were. While walking around the Old Center, it became quite natural to think about the original characteristics of this old and extraordinary town: everyone felt surronded by uniqueness. It was decided that Matera itself, its heritage, could be an amazing starting point. Something that struck us was how natural light defined Matera’s layout for domestic living. From there, the concept of CasaMatera was born‌

PADDED WOOD COLLECTION

CASAMATERA Desing Collection

Padded Wood Collection Design Gio Tirotto This project was born from an extraordinary technological innovation of the artisan Vito Gurrado knowhow: to stuff the wood. When someone sits on the chair of this collection, the body finds its space between chair and table paddings. This is exactely what happens in Matera houses, where inhabitants bodies insinuate themselves into rooms, between ceilings and floors dug in the rock.

AGRA MATER PANTRY SYSTEM

013

Agra Mater Pantry System Design Spalvieri Del Ciotto This project started by studying Matera’s characteristics. They wanted to create an object representing the city and all its characteristics: radical, pure and natural. They were also inspired by the way of life of its inhabitants: using the city as one large house, sharing space. Interior and exterior merge to create a single living space. So they designed a shelf system made of traditional

and local materials: steel, olive wood and terracotta. The shelves can be positioned inside, for example in the kitchen as a pantry, or outside as a greenhouse. It’s possible to customize the shelf with different types of containers: vases, boxes and even a natural fridge that uses the terracotta’s properties to cool things down.

PONGO

Pongo Design Gio Tirotto Matera is one of the best preserved Italian old city. This project is inspired by the potential disruption of the combination strength-weakness. Pongo jokes with modernity, it does not use the technology to support the weight: Pongo uses the technology to enhance the compression seal of organic shapes seemingly on the verge of collapse, juxtaposing hard to soft shapes.

Sassi Sofa Design Gio Tirotto The idea of Sassi Sofa comes from the reinterpretation of the Matera skyline that is made mostly of rocks. The bottom of the irregular capitonnĂŠ is inspired by the bright and dark windows of the landscape. The solid and ergonomic shape gives perfect support and the seat becomes relaxing and comfortable.

PUNTO COLLECTION

Punto Collection Design Katerina Kopytina PUNTO is a destination, a bright spot on a map. The collection is based on impressions of Matera, its diverse past and bright future. Due to the rocky surface of the city, the designer decided to make 3-legged patio furniture to comfortably enjoy coffee without staggering because of the uneven rocks. To make the furniture both soft and practical, she used a new technology where rubber foam is covered with special finish that protects the foam from the elements and keeps the shape and comfort of the seat.
