PERFECT STORM

CANTIERE DELLE MARCHE’S LARGEST BUILD TO DATE, THE CUTTING-EDGE DARWIN 107 STORM IS AN EFFICIENT, STURDY VESSEL FOR LONG VOYAGES, NO MATTER THE SEASON. MARIA ROBERTA MORSO DISCOVERS A YACHT WHOSE DESIGNERS AND BUILDERS HAVE TRULY GONE THE EXTRA MILE TO MEET – AND EXCEED – ITS OWNER’S ASPIRATIONS. leemarine.com

very so often a shipyard comes along with a model or a series that break the mould of what has gone before and set a new level of standard. This is the case of the Darwin Class created by Cantiere delle Marche. Indeed, according to highly reliable surveys, the Italian yard – founded in 2010 – after just five years of activity holds above 60 percent of the world market in the 80 to 110-foot steel and aluminium explorer vessels segment. “In the last twelve months Cantiere delle Marche sold five yachts, all above 100 feet. Last August we sold a Nauta Air 111 and a Darwin Class 102, and by the end of the year we should sign two more contracts,” Vasco Buonpensiere, sales director at Cantiere delle Marche says. Both the Darwin Class and the Nauta Air line produced by Cantiere delle Marche have become a point of reference in the global market. The Darwin Class 107 Storm that was launched in mid-July, inaugurated a series of launches all above 100 feet: two of the Darwin Class 102, one of which was launched in September; one Nauta Air 108 and one Nauta Air 111. “We are especially proud of the fact that the owners of both the Darwin Class 107 and the 102 come from prior ownership of yachts built in very prestigious northern European shipyards,” Buonpensiere says. This provides further confirmation of what the market figures have shown – good results come from commitment, dedication, vision and a straightforward attitude – all qualities that Cantiere delle Marche’s management team carry out in all aspects of their activity from project development to commercial strategies.

“We often say that we want to become better and better, not bigger and bigger,” Gabriele Virgili, president of Cantiere delle Marche, said on the occasion of the launching ceremony of Storm. “We are not interested in going over the 145-foot mark. We want to become the best in the 85 to 145-foot segment.” In the relentless improvement process the yard is passing through, the Darwin 107 represents a significant step in the evolution of the series. A lofty yacht, Storm is an explorer vessel whose purposeful design exemplifies and enhances the Darwin Class concept. Compared to the previous, smaller models, Storm features a sleeker profile, larger windows and lower gunwales, providing for a more balanced exterior line. With a robust, round-bilge, grade-A steel hull and light alluminium superstructure, the Darwin 107 features an overall length of 33 metres (that is over 108 feet), a beam of 7.7 metres (25 feet 25 inches) and a displacement of 273 tonnes. With comfortable arrangements displayed on her four decks and top-end technical equipment, Storm is a ship in all respects. A problem in writing about luxury yachts is that superlatives become exhausted, but in the case of Storm, we have to say that the standard of design, construction and finish are really fantastic.

Before describing the interior and exterior living areas, it is worth underlining that Cantiere delle Marche adopted on Storm, as they do on all of their yachts, systems and equipment normally used on commercial and passenger ships that proved to be efficient and highly reliable. “At Cantiere delle Marche we understand the operational requirements needed in a yacht to make your expedition a success,” Buonpensiere says. “In the last five years we have feedback from the navigation experience of the preceding models that have already sailed thousands of miles and we’ve used them as a guideline on Storm and all the other projects in the pipeline.” The project as proposed by the yard passed through an attentive evaluation of both the exterior and interior features with all technical issues taken into great consideration. Many of the technical characteristics of Storm go beyond what is requested by the classification

society, RINA, for this kind of vessel. As for the construction, the bottom of the hull is built with 120-millimetre steel plates, doubling class requirements; the bow is folded with a stainless steel plate 100 millimetres thick and the swim platform encompassed into the hull avoids the typical ‘slamming’ of waves underneath with platforms hanging out from the transom. Safety equipment such as liferafts have been doubled on both sides so that in case of need, those on one side can host all passengers. All windows feature shockproof glass as all panels are composed by a sandwich of two glass surfaces with a PVC layer in between. There is a bilge-oil treatment, which is standard, and all the valves and bilges are automated so the captain or engineer can transfer fuel or open and close the bilges from the bridge. This is a feature you normally see only on yachts above 500GRT. The shiny engine room – a feather in the cap on all Cantiere delle

This means that aside from reliability, the yacht will be maintained in shipshape conditions, since everything is so readily accessible. Storm was not built to strut around trendy destinations. Rather, her owner looked for a reliable and comfortable vessel to enjoy with his family. The owner knew exactly what he needed to enjoy sustained, long-distance cruising and he realised that the Darwin Class series by Cantiere delle Marche fitted the purpose. In the owner’s words: “We put together a very comprehensive specification that certainly introduced many challenges for the yard’s team to achieve. During the build we also requested some changes and found that if the shipyard believed it was an improvement to their product, it was introduced with no hesitation. The result exceeds our expectations.” Aggressive steps have been taken to reduce noise and vibrations including leemarine.com

extra layers of sound-deadening materials and resilient mounts wherever required. Storm’s hull below the waterline was devised with two primary goals in mind: to be energy efficient and sea-kindly. Energy efficient means that the hull, when underway, disturbs the water as little as possible, burning up less fuel and, at the same time providing for a smooth navigation. Comfort was indeed a primary issue for the owner. Storm is meant to be a family boat and this includes the captain, who has been working with the owner for many years, with his wife. “We took into consideration our large family’s requirements,” Storm’s owner says. From comfortable arrangements for all people aboard, to the galley’s appliances and storage space needed for long periods between port visits, to features and layout designed with grandchildren’s needs in mind, the whole project has been developed according to the owner’s requirements. Once on board we can’t help but notice the homey feeling pervading the interiors in both social and private areas. The main saloon is elegant yet cozy and livable with loose furniture, comfortable sofas and armchairs, and a relaxing ambience. The

interior decoration brings the signature of PFA Design, nevertheless the owners were very much involved in all stylistic choices and personally selected materials, upholsteries, leathers and furniture. An unusual choice are various wallpapers, which cover most walls. In the main saloon, the wallpaper’s geometric pattern is a decoration itself and adds warmth to the overall feeling. The same choice has been done in almost every room where wallpapers with different patterns and designs catch the eye: fish, anchors and sailing ships harmonise with the colour palette of fabrics, leathers and wood that is a warm-hued walnut. The interior layout is quite traditional with a full-beam owner’s stateroom occupying the forward section of the main deck. The stateroom’s homelike decoration creates a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. A full-beam bathroom with tub and shower features a wall covered with remarkable stone work, an uneven surface matching the colour and style chosen for the decor of the master cabin. The main deck also hosts the saloon with combined living and dining area. Discreet window treatments, leather venetian blinds and full-length curtains, let natural daylight bathe the interior. The adjoining large galley amidships provides plenty of space for preparing meals but also for the owners to have breakfast. Most appliances, including a couple of large fridges, are by Miele. The galley has direct access to the exterior port side passage through a robust, watertight door. On a lower level are located four guest cabins, two double and two twin with additional pullman beds, and large crew quarters accessed via a dedicated staircase. On the upper deck, the family saloon is no less comfortable than the main saloon but somewhat smaller and densely filled with furniture and decorative items thus giving a casual feeling rather than formality. From there you can go outside onto a large stern terrace where the tender and its crane are located athwartships. On the opposite end of this deck is a large and wellequipped wheelhouse featuring a handmade helm and a curved dashboard that has been designed and equipped according to the captain’s input. The separated captain’s office/radio room to port side represents an exception for a yacht of this size. Climbing the stairs, the flybridge – a splendid place to take the helm – welcomes you with a fully-equipped lounge/dining area served by a bar with barbecue, fridge and all the necessary appliances needed to prepare a meal. All in all Storm offers a pleasant environment for up to 10 guests on long voyages. Equipped with two Caterpillar C18 Acert engines delivering 500kW each at 1,800 rpm, Storm has a top speed of 12.8 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at the economical speed of 10 knots. She is a go-anywhere yacht built to handle the most challenging waters in total safety and comfort. Bravo to both her owner and the yard! www.cantieredellemarche.it www.leemarine.com
