We are so grateful to all of you for sharing this momentous occasion with us and celebrating Ethan’s Bar Mitzvah, albeit virtually. We are so excited to share this day with everybody! As you may know, we had originally planned to be in Israel last May for Ethan’s Bar Mitzvah at the Western Wall. Due to COVID, we were unable to travel and had to redirect our efforts. Ethan continued to prepare for this significant day in his life and is very happy to be celebrating in the company of so many special people. This religious ritual and family celebration marks one of the most important pieces of Ethan’s journey into adulthood and spiritual recognition. Ethan has been fully committed and has worked tirelessly for this day. It is truly a joy for us to watch him grow and flourish, and we couldn’t be prouder. The Bar Mitzvah Service The Bar Mitzvah ceremony represents the first time in a young man’s life when he is invited to assume a role of leadership and responsibility in the religious service of the Jewish community. In this service, Ethan will read several prayers in Hebrew and English. As you follow the service you will see the prayers in transliteration (Hebrew phonetically). We did this so you can be a part of the service and in so doing find it more interesting. Today marks the culmination of several months of private tutoring for Ethan where he learned many prayers and most importantly, their meanings. The Torah contains the first five books of the Bible; a selection from the Torah is read every week throughout the Jewish liturgical year until the entire Torah has been read. Ethan’s portion comes from the book of Exodus, the second of the Five Books of Moses. In addition to the reading from the Torah, Ethan will be conducting a portion of today’s service as well. A Yarmulke or head covering may be worn by men or women during the service. A Tallit or prayer shawl may also be worn by Jewish men and women over the age of thirteen. Tradition states that the tallit’s fringes are reminders of the Lord’s Commandments. This prayer book you are reading is called a Siddur. Since we have specially created this prayer book for Ethan’s Bar Mitzvah you will see the Hebrew, English translations and transliteration. You will be asked to stand a number of times during the ceremony whenever the Torah is removed or when certain prayers are recited. During a special prayer recited for those loved ones who are no longer with us known as the Mourner’s Kaddish, the congregation will also rise. During this service, people will be called to the pulpit to recite readings and blessings before and after the Torah reading. We hope some of these explanations are helpful in creating a more rewarding service.

What it means to be a Son of the Commandments The term Bar Mitzvah literally means “child of the commandments.” This is the age of accountability for a Jewish boy or girl. The thirteenth birthday traditionally meant the time when Jews became religiously adult, however this tradition is not limited only to 13 year olds. The ceremony of Bar Mitzvah is not really a goal or end in itself. It represents beginnings, the first steps on a lifelong path of Jewish responsibility. The Bar Mitzvah ceremony marks the first time a young person will be able to read from the Torah and lead a congregation in prayer. This is a milestone in Jewish life and a cause for a celebration of the entire family. It is the hope of the Jewish people that a young person assumes the role of an adult Jew; he will become a credit to his community and to the House of Israel throughout his life.

The Barchu For centuries the words of the Barchu have summoned our people to worship. At each service this prayer is recited to announce that formal worship has begun. Yet we know that all are drawn to prayer by more than public proclamation. We are called to worship by an inner longing, the desire to reflect on the purpose of our lives. The Sh’ma The Sh’ma is one of the oldest prayers in the Jewish prayer book. It calls upon the Jewish people to listen. It stresses their unity and eternity. It is not an accident that Jewish people throughout the ages have died with the Sh’ma on their lips. There is great comfort in knowing that Jews everywhere recognize this tie and feel this commitment to oneness. It is almost like having an extended family of fourteen million people. The inclusion of the Sh’ma indicates that from ancient days the purpose of worship for our people was not primarily to do the will of the worshipper, but rather for the congregation to go out into the world inspired to work

D’Var Torah - Ki Tisa My Torah Portion, Ki Tisa, is taken from the book of Exodus, the 2nd of five Books of Moses. In Ki Tisa, Moses is on top of Mount Sinai acquiring the Torah from God. The Israelites, who were at the bottom of Mount Sinai and have just been freed from slavery, had to wait for a long time for Moses to return. At that point, they began to worry that Moses was not coming back for them. The Israelites decided to create something that made them believe Moses was still there. For this, the Israelites asked Moses’ brother, Aaron, to create an idol for them. They asked for a golden calf. For this, Aaron asked for all of the earrings of the Israelites. Every single Israelite that was at the bottom of Mount Sinai gave up their earrings. Aaron melted down all of the earrings, and with all of the melted gold he acquired, he shaped it into a giant golden calf. With this, the Israelites were thrilled. They began to celebrate, dancing around the calf and having a great time. However, this was idolization, and that’s a big Jewish No-No. It’s even one of the Ten Commandments: “Do not make or worship idols.” Anyway, from the heavens, God looks and sees what is happening at the bottom of the mountain, and needless to say, God becomes enraged. He tells Moses that he is going to destroy the Israelites and have them start over. Moses, who was not seeing the incident, kindly asks God to rethink his decision and have a bit more perspective on the issue. Moses tells God that this is one single incident in history, and people make mistakes. God accepts Moses’ proposition, and Moses begins to decline the mountain with the Luchot HaBrit, or the stone tablets that held the Ten Commandments. So, he gets midway down the mountain and then sees the golden calf and the people celebrating it and dancing around it, and similar to God’s reaction, Moses is furious. In his fury, he takes the Luchot HaBrit and smashes them on the ground. For perspective, Moses smashed the relationship and covenant between God and the people. Once Moses becomes calmer, he is able to go back up to Mount Sinai and pray to God with the people in mind. God forgives Moses, and tells him to carve the Ten Commandments into another, different set of stone tablets. Now, there’s many morals and truths that can be taken from this, but this is what I take from my Torah portion. This story, Ki Tisa, is a reflection on God’s forgiveness. Humans make mistakes, we all do, and it’s what makes us human. All of us here today have made mistakes or have done things we reject, but what Ki Tisa tells us is that God loves us nonetheless. The Israelites broke one of the most sacred rules in Jewish history, and God was still able to forgive them. This

shows God’s mercy, and allows humans to be humans and make mistakes without having to worry that God will shun us.

Aleinu The Aleinu is not only one of the noblest of our prayers, it is one of the oldest. There is no question that it predates the destruction of the first Temple. The Aleinu is one of the most universal prayers. It attests to life. It voices Israel’s undying hope for the day when idolatry shall disappear, when human activities shall turn toward righteousness, when all humanity will be one body united in justice and love.
