MESSAGE FROM DR. DONALD B. RIX, Chair, Hospice Board of Directors & FILOMENA NALEWAJEK, Chief Executive Officer

Thanks to you, Canuck Place is here when children and their families need us. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we are here to help BC families cope with the most challenging task anyone could ever face – caring for a child with a life-threatening illness.

Palliative Care Workshop was well attended by health professionals from across BC.

In our 2006/2007 Annual Report, we proudly showcase the landmark financial support we have received from the community and how it has been used to deliver the highest standard of pediatric hospice palliative care.

Increased co-operation with health care providers has led to more referrals to Canuck Place. Over the last year, the demand from families wanting their children admitted to the Canuck Place program increased by 11%. In response to this demand, we are opening two more beds and adding a fifth family suite over the next year.

We are thrilled to report that we exceeded our overall fundraising goal of $5.8 million by over $2 million! This was made possible by unprecedented support from a one-time grant from the Government of BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, and our signature partner the Vancouver Canucks Canucks for Kids Fund, who have been by our side since our doors opened and continue to grow in their support annually.

During the year, an independently-conducted Operational Review (a joint project with BC Children’s Hospital) concluded that Canuck Place delivers exemplary service in a cost-effective way. The report also encouraged Canuck Place to expand delivery of services closer to where the children and families live. Moving forward, a feasibility study will be conducted to help us assess the best way to extend our services to children and families across BC.

Adding to this success was the commitment from existing and new individual donors, organizations, foundations and corporate donors. These groups vigorously and generously supported our many fundraising initiatives such as the Gift of Time Gala, the 1st Innovative Fitness Canuck Place Adventure Challenge, the Canucks for Kids Fund Telethon, CHUM Radio Vancouver’s Day of Giving, our Champions’ Club, Hugs for Kids monthly program, and our Precious Gifts website. In the 2006/2007 fiscal year, we received 9,975 gifts from 7,557 donors, a 31% increase from last fiscal year.

Over the last decade, we have worked hard to establish a strong financial footing. Under the leadership of our Board of Directors, we are now poised to step forward with our vision to expand services to reach more children and families who need the special care we provide.

Thanks to your remarkable support and the dedication of our care team – doctors, nurses, counsellors, therapists, teaching staff, social worker and in-hospice support staff – we were able to deliver vital, special services to the children and their families at absolutely no cost to them. These services include 24-hour nursing and medical care, recreation, play and music therapy, and grief and bereavement counselling support. Along with the Hospice in Vancouver, we provided additional services across British Columbia. Families were able to reach us at no cost to them 24 hours a day, just by picking up the phone. They could also be seen by our staff on an outpatient basis at Madison Clinic, a shared program between Canuck Place Children's Hospice and BC Children's Hospital. In a community of child health care organizations, Canuck Place has firmly established itself as a leader in pediatric hospice palliative care locally, nationally and internationally. Our staff are sought after to provide education to health care providers in pediatric palliative care, and our second annual Pediatric

It takes dedicated and gifted people to start each day with the goal to make it the brightest day possible for these children and families. It takes tremendous courage from the children and their families to live each of these days to the fullest, embracing life through special moments. We are inspired by them every day. Canuck Place is indeed a very special place and with the help of our amazing supporters, we are succeeding in bringing our unique model of caring and comfort to children and families across BC.

Dr. Donald B. Rix, Chair, Hospice Board of Directors

Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer

Here are a few of the things that your thoughtful support made possible for the children and families at Canuck Place: • • •

• • •

• •

The installation of a new state-of-the-art sit-bath system with a mechanical lifting device. 25 teens attended spring recreational camp and 14 children attended the fall camp held in Squamish. More support to siblings of children on the Canuck Place program through the addition of a clinical nurse specialist/certified play therapist. Formation of a Family Advisory Council to advise management on families’ views about programs, policies and activities. Bi-monthly Bereavement support groups for parents and for siblings. 6 Teen support groups (3-5 day sessions). Launch of Precious Gifts website – a wish list of items needed to bring comfort, care and joy to the Hospice. 3 recreational outings every week for a year to hockey games, movies, Playland, etc. Plans to open 2 more beds to accommodate 100 more admissions per year, and a fifth family suite.

Thank you for making Canuck Place available for the children and their families when we are truly needed.

Financial Results for the year ended March 31, 2007

Sound financial management practice is essential to the vision of world class excellence at Canuck Place. Our financial management practices protect the assets of the organization and allow transparency and accountability to all stakeholders and donors. Financial results and variance reporting is monitored monthly by an Audit Committee and reported at all Board meetings. In addition, Canuck Place financial statements are audited annually by independent auditors KPMG. The financial results for the year ended March 31, 2007 (2007 Fiscal Year) indicate the organization’s continued growth and sound financial position. In April 2006, Canuck Place received a one-time grant of $3.5 million from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, of which $1.875 million was recognized as revenue in the 2007 fiscal year and the remainder held in shortterm investments as deferred revenue for future operational funding. In addition, the Canucks for Kids Fund contributions reached a record level of $2.013 million due to a very successful hockey season and tremendous support from the fans of the Vancouver Canucks. Donations received from organizations, events and individual donors grew by 4.5% from the prior year. Interest and other income increased significantly due to grant funds held in investment accounts during the year. Increased operating expenses are a result of significant growth in the nursing and physicians’ workload and increasing direct care costs for the organization – driven by a 58% increase in end-of-life admissions at Canuck Place from the prior year. During this period, 56 new children were accepted into the Canuck Place program, up 43% from 2005/06. Canuck Place also provided in-house accommodation, meals and services to an average of seven family members per day, every day of the year. In total, 209 children and their

As at March 31 families were cared for through the Canuck Place program and 97 families through the bereavement program. As a service organization, Canuck Place’s most significant expense is staffing costs for nurses, personal care aids, physicians, counselors, therapists, kitchen staff and support workers who provide services to the children and their families. A key financial goal of the organization is to pursue long-term financial sustainability by building an endowment fund where the capital is held for the long term. Income generated from the capital held in an endowment will provide stable funding to the charity on a long-term basis. The tremendous support received during the 2007 fiscal year enabled Canuck Place to transfer $1.5 million to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Foundation for investment in endowment.
