Annual Report 2008/2009

Message From Dr. Donald B. Rix, Chair, Hospice Board of Directors & Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer Thanks to our many wonderful supporters, we are pleased to report that 2008/09 was a very dynamic and prolific one for Canuck Place. Continued support from community, corporate and individual donors, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Ministry of Health, as well as our signature partner the Canucks for Kids Fund, were critical to the success and growth of Canuck Place. The organization maintained a solid financial position and we were able to transfer some funds to the Canuck Place Foundation so we can continue to provide care and services to children and their families going forward. Once again, our success was a result of our partners and supporters working with us to make Canuck Place a home-away-from-home for children and families facing unimaginable circumstances, while providing them with excellent clinical care. The funds allowed our team to work with families through loss and grief, it gave families much needed rest and recuperation, it helped ease the pain of children suffering from a devastating illness, and it created joyous and loving memories for siblings that they will carry throughout their life. Every dollar had an impact and made a real difference. We remain incredibly grateful to our founding partner, the Vancouver Canucks for their continued support and generosity throughout the year. The $1.7 million from the Canucks for Kids Fund is so vital to our financial stability. We thank the Aquilini family, the management, coaches, staff and players for their personal involvement and ongoing commitment to the children and families we serve from across the province. We would also like to recognize the Government of BC for their significant partnership. The Ministry of Health provided $1.15 million to Canuck Place this past year. As well, in early April 2009, we received a grant from the Ministry of Children and Family Development that affirmed their commitment to the services we provide to children and their families. In April 2008, Canuck Place opened a ninth bed at the Hospice, increasing operational capacity by 12.5%. During this fiscal year, we averaged 90% operational capacity, with 412 admissions of children at the Hospice. The increased operating capacity translated into additional nursing, physician and counselling costs. With a goal of reaching every child and family in BC that needs the care of Canuck Place, and knowing from previous studies that we are currently only reaching at most 25% of the need, we undertook a program feasibility study in the Fraser Valley. The results were not surprising and clearly showed that the need is greatest in this region and that existing community

care providers could benefit by working more closely with Canuck Place. We also know that 40% of the children and families on our program today are from the Fraser Valley, and that the youth population of that area is projected to grow. With that knowledge, Canuck Place has begun to explore building a second hospice which would be located in Abbotsford. Our vision is that both locations would serve the entire province, with children and families admitted to a location based on care requirements and acuity factors rather than geographic proximity. As well, our work continues to extend our services in the province beginning with Abbotsford, Kelowna and Victoria. Working with community partners in those areas, Canuck Place will hold counselling support groups and look at holding visiting/local clinics with storefront locations. Much work remains to make the dream of a second Canuck Place hospice a reality. We are seeking partners and supporters who understand that all children with life-threatening illnesses and their families deserve access to the exceptional pediatric palliative care that Canuck Place offers. Canuck Place began as the inspiration of Brenda Eng, who through her persistence and determination built a coalition to make the first children’s hospice in North America and sixth in the world, a reality. Through the years, we have been successful at continuing to expand our support in the corporate sector, with community groups, in the health care field, and with individuals and organizations in cities and towns across the province. To realize our bold next step we will need our friends beside us helping us reach out to bring more people alongside to share our vision. We ask you to support us in this journey.
