MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR and OUR CEO At Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, our children and families live with courage. For many of them, their lives are measured not by years, or units of time – but by moments. We are grateful for your support and dedication to Canuck Place as it enables us to create truly extraordinary moments for children and their families across British Columbia. The 2011–2012 fiscal year was full of moments like these for our organization, and we are proud to share these successes with you in our Annual Report. Our vision at Canuck Place is to provide comfort and care to every child and family facing a life-threatening illness in BC. With the help of many investing in pediatric palliative care, we accomplished our goal of raising $13 million for our second hospice in Abbotsford, including a contribution of $3 million from the Province of BC. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Abbotsford, will be housed within the Dave Lede Campus of Care. This second facility’s lead donor is the Dave Lede Family Charitable Foundation. Canuck Place Abbotsford will double our current capacity with 10 beds and five family suites. Construction is progressing well and we look forward to completion of the facility in late 2013. The next phase will include raising operating capital to support two locations and better serve the growing need for pediatric palliative care for children and families across our province.

We extend our immense gratitude to all of our donors, sponsors and partners whose commitment to Canuck Place allows us to continue delivering quality pediatric palliative care that is recognized the world over. The lives of our children and families are touched every day by the dedicated investment you make in our programs. Our nurses, physicians, therapists, counsellors and our entire staff extend deepest thanks as your donations help them deliver care to the children and families we serve. We thank our extended family at the Vancouver Canucks, including the Canucks for Kids Fund, for their many significant contributions. We also thank the Aquilini family and the Vancouver Canucks management, staff, coaches, players and their families for their dedication. The journey continues as we move toward a future where all children and families in BC can receive care in their greatest time of need and a home where their courage is fostered. You are part of this journey, and you help us create moments that count. We are honoured to have your support. With gratitude,

John Rose Board Chair

Jennifer, Kaden, Kelvin and Colby. Kelowna, BC.

THE THOMAS FAMILY “Through loving support, encouragement, empowerment and mentoring the Canuck Place Family guided us through our son’s medical changes with respite, adaptive thinking for recreation, preparatory grief, sibling grief support, palliative care and bereavement for our dying son, ourselves and our extended family. While at Canuck Place, we were able to surrender to grieving and celebrate Kaden while he was still here with us.”

THE MENZEL FAMILY “Canuck Place became the light in one of the darkest times of our lives. Our son, Alex Menzel, had Menkes Disease, and Canuck Place helped us make sense of all the care he would need and the reality that he was going to pass away. From the volunteers and kitchen staff, to the nurses, doctors and counselors, it felt like our family grew. Alex passed away peacefully at Canuck Place on November 4th, 2011. There is no other place we would have rather been at that moment.”

Patti, Dawson, Darryl and Hailey. Nanaimo, BC.

THE JONES FAMILY “Our daughter Hailey has daily health chal-

lenges that require 24 hour care. Canuck Place has everything from the beautiful surroundings of a home like setting, to cutting edge research on how to deal with pain management and counseling services for ourselves as a couple and for our seven-yearold son Dawson. We have found a safe place to rest and renew, Dawson has found a fun place to play with other kids and volunteers, and Hailey now experiences a better quality of life because of this amazing place. Thank you!

MATT COX, CHERIE EHLERT AND CHARLIE-ANNE “As parents of a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, we feel very fortunate to be on the Canuck Place program. It’s a great source of support and respite, especially after long hospital stays with our daughter. Charlie-Anne loves it there as well — she gets to participate in great social activities, play in a comfortable surrounding, and of course, snack on the famous cookies! As a family we feel at ease every time we walk through the doors, and truly think of it as home while we’re there.”

Canuck Place Volunteers Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is truly fortunate to have some of the most dedicated, passionate and caring volunteers as part of our family. Hilary Oswald has been a Family Volunteer and a member of the “Thursday Dream Team” since December 2005. Here she tells us why she continues to support Canuck Place: “I support Canuck Place Children’s Hospice because nowhere else can you find the indomitable spirit of the kids who attend CP. The ‘wee folk’ know the essence of life: ‘What is essential in life is invisible to the eye and can only be seen by the heart.’ Their courage, perseverance and ability to ‘live in the moment’ is a lesson to us all. All volunteers receive 1,000,000 times more than they give! CP is the most unique family on earth.” Thank you, Hilary, and all of our 350+ volunteers for everything you do. Nursing Staff With over 35 nursing team members at Canuck Place, children and families are tightly connected to staff they know understand their needs. Canuck Place Personal Care Aide Debra Martin is a courage builder every day. “I have had so many meaningful, memorable moments working with this amazing organization that it’s hard to single out any one! Every child, baby and family ... every laugh and smile ... every death ... they have all left a memory in my heart. How could they not.” Thank you to all our nursing staff for being courage builders. We salute you!

Canuck Place Abbotsford Canuck Place Kitchen Staff The kitchen is often called the heart of a home, and at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, it really is. Our kitchen nourishes bodies, souls and spirits. We are grateful to our dedicated kitchen staff for the warmth and care they provide through the meals they cook for our children and families.

To better meet the growing need for pediatric palliative care across the province, Canuck Place is building its second hospice in Abbotsford, BC.

Amadeo “I love to make dishes that will comfort the families and staff. It’s my way of helping with the difficult times.”

Canuck Place Abbotsford will be housed within a Campus of Care, along with the Abbotsford Hospice

Roxanna “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a smile on a child or parent’s face when you make their favourite cookies or meals. Smiles say everything without saying anything.”

Society and Matthew’s House. Construction began in early 2012 and

Roberto “I hope the food I make — everyone enjoys, especially the kids. When they smile, I know it’s okay.”

is expected to be complete in 2013, with doors opening in 2014. Thank you to all our partners in construction, donors and generous suppliers for being “builders” of courage for children and families in need across British Columbia.

Dawn “I have worked in the heart of this house for over twelve years and along the way have met many special people. There have been hugs, some tears, but lots of laughs and smiles along the way. Food doesn’t just feed the body — it nourishes the soul.”

FINANCIAL REPORT

Report from the Audit and Finance Committee Individuals and corporations throughout BC have contributed generously to allow Canuck Place to provide pediatric palliative care services to the children and families of British Columbia. Donations from individual estates in the form of bequests have increased significantly which has provided Canuck Place the ability to continue providing the same service levels as in previous years. Fiscal 2011-12 was not without challenges. Canuck Place met the challenge of raising additional donations to make up decreases in annual giving and corporate partnership giving, as well as decreases in government grants for operations. We remain focused on sound financial stewardship and growing the development group within Canuck Place to allow us to meet the annual needs of children and families in British Columbia. R.
