“How do you raise a child you know is going to die?” asks mother Amy Ross. “How do you find comfort and meaning and build a life and a family around such a reality? Why us, and why her? These were the questions my husband and I pondered after our little Gabrielle was born in October 2010 with a terminal genetic disorder called I-Cell. Canuck Place filled us with hope when we had none left, and helped us to live our best life making the most of our time with Gabrielle. “After three years of being with us, Gabrielle passed away at Canuck Place. We couldn’t cure our daughter. All we could do was love her and be the best parents we could be. Hope was not a long life nor was it a cure. Hope was knowing we had somewhere amazing to take Gabrielle for respite and for her final days in peaceful surroundings with her three brothers.

“She taught her three brothers so much about life and love and she helped us, and everyone she met, put things into perspective. Hope was knowing that my little angel was having her pain managed and having a place to turn to at any time of the day for help. “THIS IS JOY“ PAPER COLLAGE CENTREPIECES By Tiko Kerr with Canuck Place Children Families Each centrepiece this evening was creatively imagined by Tiko Kerr and handcrafted by the hands and hearts of Canuck Place children and families. Following in the spirit of his latest studio creations, paper collage, Tiko provided hundreds of pre-drawn paper pieces in bold colours and lovingly cut into a variety of shapes. Under the thoughtful guidance of Tiko, the children were invited to assemble these shapes into a story of joy by choosing and arranging any number of pieces on their canvases. What you see here tonight is the culmination of these imaginative storytellers. For over 30 years, Tiko has been creating art that has been inspired by his life’s most honest moments. Following a tour of the Vancouver hospice, his inspiration turned to the children and families of Canuck Place and their courage, joy and love of each other and for living in the moment together. For Canuck Place’s 20th Anniversary he painted an image of our Vancouver location in bright, bold and beautiful strokes and named it “House of Grace.” Thank you, Tiko, for your contribution in time, creativity and inspiration and helping Canuck Place children and families artfully display their joy. When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, making the right decisions can be very difficult for families. Parents are impacted by the 24-hour care they provide for their child. The very real stresses incurred by these families include financial pressures, relationship challenges, fatigue and distress which impacts mental and physical health and overall quality of life for BC families.

These one-of-a-kind pieces can be installed on the wall or placed on a tabletop. A round shape is pressed into the sand and is flooded with molten brass – encouraging a generous and unpredictable overspill along the open perimeter. Brass has limited contact with air, and therefore emerges with a finished quality, later accentuated by polishing. The overspill is exposed to air and oxidizes to form a coarse texture in contrast to the polished centre.
