What is Autism? Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder, more generally referred to as ‘autism.’ Autism is diagnosed based on difficulties with social communication and behaviour, but there is significant variability among individuals who share the diagnosis. Autism occurs in all racial, ethnic and social groups, but is almost five times more likely to occur in boys than girls.

founders

Our Paolo & Clara Aquilini Since founding the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) in 2008, Clara and I have had the good fortune of watching CAN continue to grow in influence, reach, and impact year after year. What started as a simple vision has blossomed into an incredible network of support for thousands of families living with autism in British Columbia. When our son was diagnosed with autism in 1996, there were no opportunities for him to participate in community recreation. The necessary support, understanding and adaptations were just not available. Compelled by the growing need in the community and driven by our own personal experience, we founded the Canucks Autism Network, with the goal of filling the gap in the community and enriching the quality of life of families living with autism. CAN continues to fill this void by breathing life and hope into the lives of families affected by autism through the provision of high-quality, adaptive sports, recreational, social and arts programs designed to accommodate children, teens and young adults across the autism spectrum. CAN’s essential programs enable individuals with autism to build confidence, learn new skills, make friends, and be a part of their community. However, none of these enriching opportunities would be available to families if is were not for the outpouring of support from the generous individuals, corporations, foundations and community groups who continue to propel CAN forward.

Clara and I are incredibly grateful to all those who have joined us and supported us along CAN’s journey of growth and development. We would like to thank all of our donors and supporters including the Canucks for Kids Fund, the West Coast Fishing Club Fishing for Kids Tournament and the Reveal Gala Committee for their ongoing commitment to the cause. We are also continually moved by the inspiring dedication of the Canucks Autism Network Board, programming committee, society members, staff, and volunteers who work tirelessly to fulfill our vision of enriching the lives of those affected by autism. Surrounded by our incredible supporters, we are eager and excited to see what the future will hold.

president & CEO

Our Katy Harandi

This past year marked another year of growth and success for the Canucks Autism Network (CAN). We introduced new programs, welcomed new families, and provided essential autism training to community recreation providers across British Columbia. Through our training, we continue to build capacity across the province by arming community recreation staff, programmers and managers with strategies for supporting children with autism in community settings. We are honoured to be considered a leader in the field of adapted sports and recreation; however, our goal in the coming year is to expand our training initiatives to reach employers, first responders, and businesses or establishments that could benefit from becoming more autism aware. In addition to training, we continue to focus our efforts on the delivery of high-quality, adapted sports, recreational, social and arts programs for the over 2,400 individuals we serve. Since 2008, we have been all about the CAN do attitude, not only in our programming, but in our organizational culture. Parents come to us on a daily basis and tell us that their child probably can’t learn to swim. That they likely can’t ride a bike or play on a hockey team. We prove to them that their child CAN. So many of the children and teens themselves believe that they can’t try a new sport or make a new a friend. We empower them to believe in themselves, to believe that they CAN, and they do. For many of these individuals, CAN is not just an organization, it is a second family. A place where they can learn new skills, build self-esteem, and make a friend, often for the first time. It is a place where parents can connect in support of one another. This short word, CAN, has so much more significance than its three letters. It represents confidence and success and thousands of glowing smiles. It represents happiness. We are incredibly proud of the progress we have made since CAN’s inception in 2008, however, none of it would be possible without our incredible army of staff and volunteers whose passion and dedication continues to fuel us forward. This amazing group of individuals dedicated over 2,000 hours to support our 496 programs last year. I would like to congratulate the CAN team on the impressive accomplishments of the 2014/15 program year. The inspiring commitment of our Board, staff, donors, and partners lies at the foundation of our continued growth and impact across British Columbia. It is thanks to all of you that we can continue to turn can’ts into CANs for so many families living with autism in this province.

Program delivery Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides high-quality, adapted sports, recreational, social and arts programs for children, teens and young adults living with autism. Individuals living with autism benefit from specialized coaching and support techniques; therefore, all CAN staff receive comprehensive training on a variety of support strategies prior to working with the participants. CAN participants are supported by trained coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers, allowing each individual with autism to receive 1:1 support. In addition to a high ratio of quality support, CAN programs are delivered through parent collaboration, allowing staff to incorporate support strategies that meet the unique needs of each participant. Each program enables participants to try new activities, build social and communication skills, and acquire program-specific skills in a safe and supportive environment. Wherever possible, CAN looks for community partners to help deliver the programs. CAN provides expertise in the area of supporting individuals with autism and partners share their subject matter expertise, equipment and facilities. A good example of this model is CAN’s partnership with the Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SoM). SoM provides music instructors, classroom space and instruments while CAN Support Workers ensure that each individual is able to participate to the best of their ability.

Staff spotlight– Monica Bui Monica Bui has been a valuable asset to the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) since she was hired as a support worker back in September of 2012. Monica has since provided integral support in over 20 programs, contributing over 580 hours to the Canucks Autism Network and its members. Monica began with CAN as a volunteer, however, her incredible passion, experience and dedication allowed her role to naturally evolve into that of a Support Staff, followed by a Program Coach, then an On-Site Coordinator and eventually a vital member of the CAN Support Team. Monica now acts as a leader and mentor to hundreds of support staff who look to her, and the other members of the support team, for guidance on the best strategies for supporting individuals with autism. In addition to her vast experience in CAN programs, Monica is able to contribute her personal experience and insight of being a sibling of an individual with autism. Monica continues to inspire and motivate those around her, including CAN volunteers, staff, and most importantly, the individuals with autism who benefit from her incredible support.

When my brother was first diagnosed, it was the hardest thing we ever had to go through as a family. Little did we know how lucky we would be when we learned about Canucks Autism Network. CAN has been so important to my family as it has given my brother opportunities that we never thought possible. Working for CAN has been an amazing experience. I have never stopped growing and learning and it is an honour to work with a team that is so passionate and dedicated to enriching the lives of those living with autism. - Monica Bui

Autism

awareness initiatives

In addition to program delivery and training, Canucks Autism Network aims to build awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism in the community at large.

The CAN Van The CAN Van is an interactive, mobile display that travels throughout BC educating the public about autism with the goal of creating more inclusive and supportive communities for all those living with autism. The CAN Van invites visitors to experience what it may be like to live with autism through various sensory exhibits. It also informs the public about “red flags” for autism to promote awareness and facilitate early identification for parents and caregivers.

Autism Aware Autism Aware is an initiative that aims to promote awareness and understanding of autism as a means to provide families living with autism with opportunities for meaningful inclusion in all community activities. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to create community spaces where every family with autism feels welcome and supported. Canucks Autism Network piloted Autism Aware with the Vancouver International Airport Authority (YVR). Through the partnership, YVR offered an accessibility tour for CAN families which enabled them to practice the entire airport process. In addition to the tour, YVR and CAN developed resource kits to better prepare children with autism for the potentially overwhelming airport experience. The resource kits consist of a step-by-step storybook, an interactive checklist, an airport ‘road map’, and helpful tips for travel. A comprehensive video series has also been created to help families prepare their child in advance of air travel.

We CAN Be Friends We CAN Be Friends is a curriculum-based elementary school program that teaches students the values of friendship, empathy and inclusion by using grade appropriate lesson plans, autism specific resources, and awareness raising activities for the entire school. The curriculum is currently being delivered in226 elementary schools across British Columbia.

Autism Lending Library The Canucks Autism Network Lending Library houses over 1,000 autism-related books, games, manuals and DVDs. Resources are available for loan to anyone living in BC and are shipped free of charge, with return shipping included.

FUNDRAISING—REVEAL GALA

The inaugural Canucks Autism Network (CAN) Reveal Gala, presented by SAP, took place on Thursday, September 24, at Rogers Arena. The ice was covered and the arena was transformed into an intimate and extraordinary setting for 544 guests who sat around 68 tables representing the prevalence of the now 1 in 68 children diagnosed with autism. Through the generosity of guests and sponsors, and the hard work of our incredible gala committee co-chaired by Clara Aquilini and Charmaine Crooks, the event raised an incredible $785,000 for the Canucks Autism Network to support the growing needs of the more than 11,000 children and youth living with autism in B.C. The event was a true celebration of community, hope and the many faces of autism.

Volunteer spotlight– Barbara Yung Barbara Yung started volunteering with the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) in April of 2014. In less than a year, Barbara has selflessly contributed over 328 hours to over 14 CAN programs. She is one of only four volunteers to reach over 300 hours and the only one to do so in such a short period of time. In addition, Barbara has attended numerous autism training workshops, one of which required her to take a week off of her full time job, further proving her incredible commitment to supporting individuals with autism. Barb is a wonderful addition to the CAN team and an inspiration to us all.

“I can't stop telling people about my newfound passion. I could not be happier to do my little part to give back to my community, especially to such a phenomenal organization. Being able to touch the lives of so many kids, young adults and families with autism is truly amazing. CAN participants are all very unique and special, and no two kids are the same. Autism may bring different challenges, but if we can teach them how to overcome these challenges, and help them live their lives to the fullest, then we have done our job, and that is very rewarding. - Barbara Yung

The strategy for 2015 was to continue to expand the number and nature of our programs while maintaining the quality of these program offerings while working to diversify our revenue sources to preserve our strong financial foundation for the long term. We were able to expand our offering of programs and training opportunities in 2015. As in prior years, we continue to focus on running our operations efficiently and we have maintained our administration expenses at approximately eight percent of total outlays. This allows for 83 cents per dollar to be spent on programs. We plan to continue to focus on delivering a diverse menu of quality programs to the regions in which we operate. We also plan to operate in a financially responsible manner by working to diversify our revenue sources and by managing our 26 balance sheet in a prudent and responsible manner.

Donor spotlight– Andrew Purdey Andrew has been a dedicated and active supporter of the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) since 2009. As a longstanding committee member of the Fishing for Kids West Coast Fishing Club Tournament, Andrew’s generosity and leadership have played a key role in helping the tournament raise $4.7 million in support of CAN. Building on the success of Fishing for Kids, Andrew had the vision to create an event in his home community of Mill Bay on Vancouver Island in support of CAN programs in the Cowichan Valley. The Savour Cowichan Festival and Sip, Savour & Support events came to fruition three years ago and have since brought together thousands of generous individuals who have collectively raised over $400,000 and awareness of autism throughout the region. In July 2015, Andrew’s leadership and determination were the driving force behind the Vancouver Canucks’ decision to hold their 2015 Prospects Development Camp at the newly built Shawnigan Lake School Arena. The camp (attended by Vancouver Canucks prospects, coaches and executives - including General Manager Jim Benning & President Trevor Linden) was an overwhelming success and included a fundraising dinner in support of the Canucks for Kids Fund and the Canucks Autism Network, which was also inspired by Andrew. Andrew has a single-minded focus on building strong communities and helping those confronting adversity. He motivates everyone around him and constantly reminds people that if they have the ability to give and be compassionate, then they should to their fullest extent.

It is never lost on me the profound positive effects we can collectively have on our communities. Supporting the Canucks Autism Network’s work to provide opportunities, reduce isolation and raise awareness of the needs of individuals challenged in society has been a significant endeavour for me and my family. It is imperative that we continue to engage people from all walks of life and build on the foundations we have created.” - Andrew Purdey
