About Canucks Autism Network Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides high-quality, adaptive sports, recreational, social and arts programming for individuals and families living with autism in BC. The CAN team consists of a diverse group of trained staff, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers who administer programs in safe and supportive environments.

COMMUNITYWORKS CANADA® (AGES 15-21)
The CommunityWorks Canada® program provides opportunities for youth with autism, ages 15-21, to volunteer alongside typical peers in a variety of community settings while developing work skills and building communication and social skills. The program is funded in part by the Government of Canada's Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities Program, and is offered by the Canucks Autism Network as part of a new federally funded national project called Worktopia. Previous sessions have been at Science World, Union Gospel Mission, Canuck Place, and community gardens.

FAMILY EVENTS (ALL AGES)
The purpose of family events is to provide families with opportunities to enjoy a variety of fun activities in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment. Canucks Autism Network offers a range of activities throughout the year that are open to the entire family, with all ages welcome. Due to the family nature of the events 1:1 support is not available; however, each family event is supported by many helpful volunteers.

FITNESS
(AGES 13-17, 18+)
The purpose of the I CAN Get Fit program is to offer youth and adults with autism the opportunity to participate in a fitness class designed to promote physical and social development in a safe and supportive environment. Program Structure & Supports Each session of the fitness program consists of 90-minute fitness lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Fitness lessons will focus on aerobic endurance, strength, and flexibility and will include individual, partner, and group exercises. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to lateNovember), winter (late-January to early-

I CAN DO GYMNASTICS
(AGES 7-12)
The purpose of this program is to teach gymnastics skills to children and youth with autism in a safe and supportive environment. Through a variety of activities the program will focus on basic gymnastics skills, as well as general gym safety. Participants will be able to gain exposure to all of the typical equipment found in a gymnastics facility, such as floor, beam, bars, rings and trampoline.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Do Gymnastics program consists of 60 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Lessons include circuit style activities, individual or small group skill practice, and group games. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers. Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child such as visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc. Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is excited to be providing this program in partnership with Cameron Recreation Centre, Delta Gymnastics Society and Royal City Cheer. Each facility will provide qualified gymnastics coaches to oversee the lessons and work in collaboration with CAN to make adaptations to curriculum to ensure the success of participants. I CAN DO GYMNASTICS (ages 7-12)
GYMNASTICS PROGRAM FEE The Gymnastics program has a subsidized fee of $10/hr ($60 for a six-week session) for participants confirmed into the program. I CAN BE ACTIVE
(ages 3-6)
A gym-based introduction to movement and sports skills The purpose of the I CAN Be Active program is to teach children with autism, and their siblings, fundamental movement skills in a safe and supportive environment. Learning fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping and balancing helps children build the confidence necessary for a lifetime of sport and physical activity. This program is designed to give children the opportunity to be active and work on their physical literacy through
games.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Be Active program consists of 45 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks.
Sessions for this program take place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to late-November), winter (late-January to early-March), and spring (mid-April to late-May). Lessons each week include a warm-up, group games and individual skill practice that work on fundamental movement and sports skills. At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant. The program is supported by trained staff, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for children and youth with autism. Please do not hesitate to collaborate and speak with coaches and support staff about strategies to use with your child (e.g., visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.) Canucks Autism Network has prepared a social storybook for those families who may find it helpful. I CAN PLAY SPORTS
(ages 7-12)
An introduction to soccer, basketball, and gym-based games (formerly known as the Basketball and Soccer Programs) The purpose of the I CAN Play Sports program is to provide children with autism, and their siblings, a fun introduction into the world of sports! Participants will enjoy games and drills that work on fundamental movement
skills, specifically those used in the sports of soccer and basketball. This program is designed to provide a fun, safe and supportive environment for all those taking part.
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Play Sports program consists of 60 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks.
Sessions for this program take place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). Each week, lessons will include a mix of individual practice and group games that work on skills relating to physical literacy, soccer and basketball. These activities help to develop basic movement skills used in a variety of sports settings. At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant. The program is supported by trained coaches, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for children and youth with autism. MONTHLY SOCIAL GROUP: FOR YOUTH (ages 13-17)
The purpose of the monthly social group is to offer the opportunity for youth with autism between the ages of 13-17 to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. The events change each month to offer a range of fun, age appropriate activities for participants to experience with their peers.

MUSIC
(ages 7-12, 13-17)
The purpose of the music program is to provide participants with instruction to choral style singing and the use of basic percussion instruments in a group lesson format. Program Structure & Supports Music lessons are directed by the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and supported by Canucks Autism Network staff and volunteers. Each lesson consists of 8-10 participants who may be split into smaller groups. Participants are provided with a high ratio of support (1:1 or 2:1 available if needed).

Outdoor Rec REC O UTDOOR (ages 13-17, 18+)
The purpose of the Outdoor Rec program, in partnership with Power to Be, is to offer youth and adults with autism the opportunity to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in a safe and supportive environment. Program Structure & Supports The Outdoor Rec program is led by Power to Be, and participants are highly supported by trained CAN staff and dedicated volunteers. Activities vary month-to-month, and may include hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, geocaching, and more. CAN and Power To Be will be working in collaboration to provide high quality, outdoor recreation activities in a safe and fun environment.

I CAN SKATE (ages 3-12)
The purpose of the I CAN Skate program is to teach skating skills to children and youth with autism in a safe and supportive environment. The skate program introduces participants to
basic skating skills such as marching, stopping, moving forward and gliding. For those with more experience, skills will be adapted to challenge participants with skills such as skating backwards, sculling, turns, jumping and increasing speed. SKATE PROGRAM FEE The Skate program has a subsidized fee of $10/hr ($30 total for a six-week skate session) for participants confirmed into the program. Participants enrolled into a program with an associated fee will be provided additional details on how to process this fee. For a list of payment options, please check Payment Options .
Program Structure & Supports Each session of the skate program consists of 30 minute lessons, once per week, for multiple weeks. Lessons include choice time, individual or small group skill practice, and group games. Sessions for this program takes
place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (mid-April to late May). Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers. The Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child. This includes visual schedules, first -then boards, token systems, social stories, etc. Access the Skate Activity Storybook to help prepare your child for the program.

The purpose of the I CAN Swim program is to teach basic swimming and water safety skills to children, youth and young adults with autism in a safe and supportive environment. The objective of this program is to help participants develop swim and water safety skills that will assist them in enjoying a lifetime of water recreation pursuits. The swim program will teach basic swimming and water safety skills under the nationally recognized Red Cross
Swim program. All participants will work toward achieving a Red Cross report card that can eventually transfer to other community-based swim classes. The program duration will also be extended from 6 to 8 weeks, allowing participants more time to practice and improve their swim skills. Program Structure & Supports Each session of the I CAN Swim program consists of lessons once per week, for multiple weeks. Sessions for this program take place three times during the year; winter (mid-October to late November), winter (late January to early March), and spring (midApril to mid-June). Each lesson consists of a small group of participants with a high ratio of support provided by a certified swim instructor, trained support workers and dedicated volunteers. Lessons include skill development and water safety awareness in a fun environment. *With a high ratio of support provided parents and other family members are asked to remain in the waiting area while the program is taking place. At Canucks Autism Network, we strive to meet the needs of each participant and encourage parent collaboration. Our staff receive training on a variety of support strategies for children and youth with autism. Please do not hesitate to speak with coaches and support staff about strategies to use with your child (e.g., visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.) Access our Swim Activity Storybook to help prepare your child for the program. CHILDREN’S SWIM: LEVEL 1 (ages 7-12)
CHILDREN’S SWIM LEVEL 1 (Ages 7-12) This program focuses on foundational skills, while building swimmers confidence. Participants will work on skills including entering the water, shallow water movement, bubbles, submersions, rhythmic breathing, floats, glides and front swim for a distance of 5 meters. *Prerequisite: No previous swim experience required. Intended for participants working on the skills listed above.
The swim program will teach basic swimming and water safety skills under the nationally recognized Red Cross Swim program. All participants will work toward achieving a Red Cross report card that transfer to other community-based swim classes. The program duration will also be extended from 6 to 8 weeks, allowing participants more time to practice and improve their swim skills.
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian/participant to register in the correct level. If the participant has not been placed correctly, he or she may be permitted to transfer to an alternate level, based on program availability. If no spots are available, the participant will be withdrawn from the program. If you have a previous swim report card, please bring it to your instructor on the first day.

Participants will continue to work on swim endurance with a distance of 10 meters. An Introduction to deep water activities and life jackets will also be included. *Prerequisite: Participants who have passed Level I, and/or who are confident and independent in the skills developed in Level I. The swim program will teach basic swimming and water safety skills under the nationally recognized Red Cross Swim program. CHILDREN’S SWIM LEVEL 3 (Ages 7-12) This program will continue to expand on skills completed in level 2, adding in front glide/side glide combination, and increasing swim distance to 15 meters. Swimmers will spend a significant amount of time in the deep water practicing safety skills, as well as being introduced to sitting dive and deep water support. *Prerequisite: Participants who have passed Level II, and/or who are confident and independent in the skills developed in Level
II. The swim program will teach basic swimming and water safety skills under the nationally recognized Red Cross Swim program. All participants will work toward achieving a Red Cross report card that can eventually transfer to other community-based swim classes. The program duration will also be extended from 6 to 8 weeks, allowing participants more time to practice and improve their swim skills. YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT SWIM PROGRAM FEE There is a subsidized program fee of $60 for those participants confirmed into the program. WEEKLY SOCIAL GROUP: FOR YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS (ages 13-17, 18+)
The purpose of the weekly social group is to offer the opportunity for youth and young adults with autism to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. This social group is intended to provide fun activities within a social context, where participants are encouraged to get to know each other and build peer relationships. Program Structure & Supports Each session of the program consists of 1.5 hours, once per week, for multiple weeks. Sessions for this program takes place three times during the year; Winter (mid-October to late November), Winter (late January to early March), and Spring (mid-April to late May). The activities will vary each week. Indoor activities may include board games, snack preparation, video games, and dance parties. Up to 10 participants will be enrolled in each session, and supported by a program leader, support workers, and volunteers. Participants are provided with a high ratio of support (1:1 or 2:1 available if needed). This program is designed for participants with autism to attend independently.

Winter 2018 Weekly Social Group Program Registration Interested in signing up for a session of the Weekly Social Group program? Individuals and families living with autism must first sign up for an online CAN Participant Membership. Please visit https://canucksautismprograms.ca, to begin this process. Already a member? Online registration takes place during the week of Monday, November 20th at noon - Friday, November 24th at noon. All registrations will be to PENDING ENROLMENT ONLY – this means that no
spots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. After online registration closes, the CAN staff will review the lists of those interested and will email all participants regarding their registration status by the end of the day on Friday, December 1st . Please keep in mind that the Canucks Autism Network aims to accommodate as many unique individuals into our programs as possible, and that ENROLMENT is not guaranteed for any participant.

PAYMENT OPTIONS FOR PROGRAM FEES After a participant is confirmed into a program with an associated program fee, they will be provided more details on how to process this fee. Methods of payment accepted include the following:

Autism Funding o Participants ages 6-18yrs are able to submit a Request to Pay form to Autism Funding for the program fee. o There are different requirements of fees eligible for Autism Funding for participants ages 5yrs and younger. For participants 5yrs and younger, parents are encouraged to contact Autism Funding to inquire about eligibility of program fee (to provide behaviour interventionist support of participant) to be
covered through a participant’s Autism Funding. ·

Additional Payment Options o Along with the payment options listed above, CAN is open to working with participants to collect program fee payments through additional routes, including bursaries

CAN Fee Assistance Program o CAN does not wish a program fee to act as a barrier to participation in a CAN program and has created a fee assistance program to help alleviate these barriers for participants needing assistance. For participants confirmed into a program with an associated fee, parents may email info@canucksautism.ca to request an application form and more information about the CAN Fee Assistance Program.
