About Canucks Autism Network Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides high-quality, adaptive sports, recreational, social and arts programming for individuals and families living with autism in BC. The CAN team consists of a diverse group of trained staff, experienced support workers and dedicated volunteers who administer programs in safe and supportive environments.

The next session of our multi-week programs , including swim, soccer, skate, etc., will take place in Fall 2016. Registration for these fall multi-week programs will take place in mid-August. We recommend that those interested check back to the CAN website in late July/early August.

Family Events Family Events (All ages) The purpose of family events is to provide families with opportunities to enjoy a variety of fun activities in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment. Canucks Autism Network offers a range of activities throughout the year that are open to the entire family, with all ages welcome. Due to the family nature of the events 1:1 support is not available; however, each family event is supported by many helpful volunteers.

Multisport Program

Multisport Program (Ages 5-16) The Canucks Autism Network Multisport Program is a great opportunity for participants with autism, and their siblings, to try a variety of sports activities! This summer, participants will be given the opportunity to play sports such as football, softball, soccer, and more!

Program Structure & Supports There are two structures for the multisport program:  

Multisport Day-Long Program at Shawnigan Lake Multisport Week-Long Program in the Lower Mainland

Additional information on these specific programs, including locations, dates and times, is available on their following program pages: Day-Long and Week-Long Program Fee There is a $25 fee per participant to access this program. This fee may be paid by cash or cheque, and those with an autism diagnosis, may request that their Autism Funding be used to pay the fee. Canucks Autism Network does not wish to have this fee act as a barrier to accessing the program, and is willing to collaborate with those families needing assistance on additional payment options. Participants being enrolled into the program will be provided with additional information on each payment option.

Multisport Program Multisport Program—Week-Long Program (Lower Mainland)

The purpose of the multisport program is to provide participants with autism, and their siblings, an opportunity to try a variety of sports activities! This summer, participants between the ages of 5-16yrs will be given the opportunity to play sports such as football, softball, soccer and more! Canucks Autism Network is excited to offer this opportunity for participants to gain new experiences in sport in a safe, supportive and collaborative setting!

Program Structure & Supports Each session of the multisport program consists of 1.5 hrs lessons, once a day, for five consecutive days (MondayFriday). In each lesson, there are up to 27 participants who are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers, allowing for participants with autism to receive 1:1 support. Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child. This includes visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc. To help participants enrolled in the multisport program better prepare for their experience, Canucks Autism Network has prepared a Multisport Program Social Storybook.

Program Structure & Supports This year at Shawnigan Lake School, participants will come out and enjoy a one day program filled with fun sports activities! Lessons will include basic drills in all sports, supportive individualized skill practice and supervised group activities. Coaching for the various activities will be provided in collaboration with program partners. Participants are supported by trained program coaches, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers, allowing for participants to receive 1:1 support.

Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child such as visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc. To assist participants enrolled in the multisport program better prepare for their experience, the Canucks Autism Network has prepared this Multisport Program Social Storybook.

Bike Program Bike Program—Week-Long Program (Lower Mainland)

The purpose of the bike program is to teach children and youth with autism how to ride a bike in a safe and supportive environment. The hope is that the skills developed in this program will allow participants to enjoy bike activities with their peers and families.

Monthly Social Programs

Kids Monthly Social Program - Ages 9-12 The purpose of the Kids Monthly Social Program is to provide an opportunity for children with autism (aged 9 -12) to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. Activities change each month to offer a range of fun, age appropriate activities for participants to experience with their peers.

Program Structure & Supports Participants get to enjoy a different activity each month. Past events have included: art/music classes, snow tubing, Lego party, circus school, Science World, rock climbing and much more! Participants are supported by trained program leaders, experienced support workers, and a group of dedicated volunteers.

Canucks Autism Network strives to meet the needs of each participant and encourages parents to speak with the program coaches and staff about useful support strategies for their child. This includes visual schedules, first-then boards, token systems, social stories, etc.

Monthly Social Programs Teens Monthly Social Program - Ages 13-17 The purpose of the Teens Monthly Social program is to offer the opportunity for teens with autism to get together and have a good time in a safe and supportive environment. Events change each month to offer a range of fun, new, age appropriate activities for participants to enjoy with their peers.

Past events have included : bowling, sports events, charity events, art classes, cooking classes, dinners, laser tag, beach BBQ, water sports, snow sports, dance class, games nights and more! Participants are supported by trained program leaders, experienced support workers, and dedicated volunteers. This program is intended for participants to attend independently. As our social programs are designed to encourage social interaction between peers, parents are asked to drop-off their children and return at the scheduled pick-up time.

Monthly Social Programs Social Program for Siblings of Individuals with Autism (Ages 8-13) The purpose of this program is to provide siblings of individuals with autism with an opportunity to gain peer support and education within a recreational context. Events change each month to offer a range of fun, age appropriate activities for the participants to experience with their peers. This program is led by staff and volunteers, the majority of whom are siblings of individuals with autism.

Program Structure & Supports Events are planned once per month from Sept-June (with the exception of Dec.). Please check this page and/ or the newsletter for the monthly events. Participants are supported by a Coach, two Support Workers, and two volunteers with the majority of staff and volunteers are siblings of individuals with autism.

Overnight Camp Family Camp - All Ages Overnight Family Camp is a weekend opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an outdoor experience in an organized group setting, while connecting with other families living with autism! Canucks Autism Network staff facilitate a wide range of indoor and outdoor camp activities while also providing families free time to enjoy the beautiful camps setting. Please note: Family Camp is intended for immediate family members only.

Program Requirements Upon confirmed enrollment into Overnight Family Camp, families must commit to submitting the following:  Complete a medical form for each family member registered to attend the camp (including parents/ guardians and siblings who are not on the autism spectrum), and submit these forms to the CAN office by the specified due date  Provide a $250 program fee per family. For more information on this subsidized program fee and payment options, please click here. Summer 2016 Overnight Family Camp Registration Online registration for the 2016 Overnight Family Camps took place during the week of Monday, March 14, 2016— Friday, March 18, 2016, and those interested were notified of their registration status by the end of day on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Due to the high demand for this program, there is already a large waitlist for each overnight camp. For this reason, we will not be accepting late registration requests.

Overnight Camp

Kids, Teens & Young Adults Camp - Ages 7-30 Overnight Kids, Teens & Young Adults Camp enables participants with autism, ages 7-12, 13-18 and 19-30, to experience an unforgettable adventure in the great outdoors. No siblings, no parents, just a chance to hang out, try new things, and make new friends. A high ratio of staffing is provided to ensure a safe, successful overnight experience for everyone. Individuals across the autism spectrum are welcome to participate in camp programs.

Program Structure Activities may include swimming, ropes course, archery, rock climbing, field games, boating, campfires, and much more! Participants will also be provided downtime to hangout with peers.

Program Requirements Upon confirmed enrollment into Overnight Kids, Teens & Young Adults Camp program, participants must commit to submitting the following:  A medical form that has been completed and signed by a physician  Provide a subsidized program fee of $500 per participant. The fee may be paid through a participant’s autism funding, by credit card, cheque or cash. Canucks Autism Network does not wish for this fee to act as a barrier to participation and is willing to collaborate on additional payment options with participants needing assistance.
