community engagement AND cultural planning course 21, 22 & 23 September, and 29 & 30 October 2009
>> what is community engagement and cultural planning? Community engagement is about providing opportunities for people to participate in the decision-making, planning and development processes that affect their lives. This approach seeks to be creative and inclusive of the diversity that exists in communities. Cultural planning is a strategic planning process that aims to facilitate partnerships between community, local government and the private sector; identify and promote community values and cultural resources; and transform community ideas, initiatives and visions into real outcomes. Cultural planning employs a range of creative community engagement techniques, including cultural mapping. These techniques allow for an empowering process, which grows community capacity and spirit.

>> participant feedback ‘Something shifted inside of me and I realised that the purpose wasn’t to save the world but rather to help communities to do it for themselves, to form their own values and identities and to shape their own directions, both as individuals and collectively as a community. In this way my help wouldn’t be something purely cosmetic but something more valuable and sustainable … I left the course with a renewed sense of my abilities. I was itching to set these new dreams into action.’ J. Geddes, Community Consultant
‘I would encourage any organisation that works with communities whether a local government authority, a state government agency or a nongovernment agency to consider sending a staff member … Participants can expect to be extended beyond their comfort zone to build up skills that they will be able to apply when they return to their organisation.’ G. Wallace, WA Museums
