ingle mom Toni Biggerstaff thought she was going to a soccer awards presentation for one of her three daughters on Tuesday – instead she was presented with a new car. “Then suddenly there was a car in front of me with a bow on it, and they were saying they were giving it to me,” said Biggerstaff. “I’m still in shock. It’s a huge present.” Family friend Raylene Moorthy, who had nominated the family for the 2010 Christmas Car Giveaway, lured Biggerstaff and her girls to the Fix Auto Abbotsford east location. This year’s car was a quality, used Nissan Sentra that was fully inspected and detailed for its new owner. The car also came compete with a year’s registration and insurance and a new CD player. Moorthy, whose husband coaches the Biggerstaff girls’ soccer team, said she’s known the family for years and knows their struggles. As soon as she saw the call for contest nominations, the Biggerstaff family immediately popped into her mind, said Moorthy. “They have suffered relationship changes, job changes, but Toni and the girls are so hard working and they always find the positive,” she said. “I know there were many families to choose from, but I don’t think they could have chosen anyone better.” Biggerstaff lost her job in the fall and was forced to take a lower paying part-time job to replace it. Not only are she and the girls surviving on a lower income, but they’ve also been without a car for a year and a half. “I’d saved up a little money for a

Now I can take them to school and know they are safe.” Biggerstaff’s daughters Heather, 16, Sophie, 13 and Emily, 9, were as excited as their mom. “I think my mom deserves it. I don’t know why I’m crying,” she said, her voice cracking. The car means the family can get around again, said Biggerstaff. She’s looking forward to taking the girls out on the road. “Now we can get out of Abbotsford, maybe go to the beach in White Rock . . . listen to the tunes on the new stereo.”

bbotsford Police are searching for three men who assaulted a female employee by spitting in her face at a liquor store in September. The incident took place at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 at a crowded, privately operated liquor store in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way. Three South Asian men, who had been waiting in line, barged ahead of other customers when a second cash register became available. The suspects swore at the cashier, a 19-year-old employee, who protested that the men had barged the line. The men then knocked over a liquor display, and spat in the face of a 25-year-old employee before fleeing the scene. Police have released survellience video images so the public can help identify the suspects. The incident has been under investigation since September, but police have just now been able to attain clear images of the alleged assailants, said Const. Ian MacDonald. “We knew there was security video, but there was some difficulty on the part of the proprietor to download that video,” he said. see ASSAULT, page A6

Abbotsford roller derby girls give back at Christmas ROCHELLE BAKER RBaker@abbotsfordtimes.com

I

t may run against the stereotype surrounding derby girls, but the Abbotsford’s Reign Valley Vixens are soft touches. The local roller derby team raised $1,500 dollars to support a family during the holiday through the Abbotsford Food Bank’s Christmas Bureau. The Vixen’s community events coordinator Combat Blondie, aka Bethany Glasgow, said the team has always wanted to sponsor a family at Christmas. “The girls really wanted an entire family with a mom, dad and teenagers,” said Glasgow, adding a number of Vixens are moms of teenagers themselves. “We passed around a skate at our Christmas party with all our friends and husbands,” she said. “I was blown away . . . in a matter of 15 minutes we had $1,500 dollars.” Small donations from the total amount went to other charities, and $250 was donated to a Vixen in need, a single mom facing a difficult Christmas this year. But the bulk of the money went towards buying gifts and an enormous Christmas food hamper for the family assigned to the Vixens, a couple with two teenage boys. “We did a huge grocery shopping trip and went shopping for clothes and running shoes... [the family] asked for staple items.” Glasgow and another member dropped off the Christmas hamper to the parents Sunday. “Just two of us went because we didn’t want to overwhelm them because there’s a lot of us,” she said. “I have a feeling this family has hit

Briefly New firehall

Abbotsford is getting a brand new fire hall in the Townline area. City council voted unanimously to approve the zoning for the new fire station located at 30939 Blueridge Dr. at the intersection with Blue Jay Street. The new hall allows Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service to improve response times in the Townline area and also to rural areas in the northwest of the city. The proposal met with resistance from residents of the Slater Ridge Estates on Blue Jay Street who said the station will be noisy, dangerous and shouldn’t be built on city parkland. Residents wanted the city to look at alternative sites in the Townline area. However, Fire Chief Don Beer said that three other properties were evaluated and found to be inferior.

a rough patch in their life, and it felt really nice to help them out. It’s something we’d like to do every year.” Contributing to the community is a year-round priority for the Vixens. The team’s goal is to do four community-based events a year including its annual blood drive, cancer fundraiser and its year round commitment to the Abbotsford Food Bank. At every roller derby bout the team collects non-perishable goods for the food bank and gives donors a $2 discount on tickets. “We want to be involved in our community, and we want our community to be involved with us. [Sponsoring a family at Christmas] is just one aspect of that,” said Glasgow.

The City of Abbotsford will be looking for a halftime volunteer coordinator. The decision was made Monday night after a number of councillors found the $78,000 salary for a fulltime position too pricey for the tight 2011 budget. City staff had recommended a full-time hire.

vote against the budget and tax hike. The ever-increasing burden placed on taxpayers in terms of things such as property taxes, gas prices or the HST is unsustainable, he said. “Enough is enough,” he said. “I cannot support this budget.” However, MacGregor did not suggest alternative options council could take to maintain services to the community and still exercise economic restraint. A number of councillors noted many financial burdens faced by taxpayers were not something they could control, and many increased costs were the responsibility of other levels of government. “Local government is in the situation it is because of senior levels of government downloading their responsibilities,” said Coun. Patricia Ross. Coun. John Smith said staff had already made as many cuts as possible without crippling city operations. “I’d like to be a hero too,” he said. “But I can’t see where else we could slash [the budget].” Staff also presented information to council about the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce proposal to freeze business property taxes for four years. The tax hike of 4.3 per cent for homeowners would rise to 6.8 per cent in 2011 if the city had to recoup the projected $1.7 million in revenue expected from business taxes. Councillors rejected the idea of any freezes on business taxes, noting the proposal came late in the budget process for the coming year. However, council did direct staff to entertain the concept and other possible measures with the start of the 2012 budget.

bbotsford city council has approved a 4.3 per cent property tax increase in the 2011 budget. Homeowners of an average single detached family residence valued at $377,000 can expect to pay an extra $75 a year, not including utilities fees, according to city estimates. A strata residence with an average value of $200,000 can expect to pay an increase of $40. In terms of utility fees in 2011, an average single-family residence could expect to pay a total of $803 for water, sewer and solid waste, up from $734 in 2010. A break down of the total hike results in a one per cent increase to the capital budget plus a 3.3 per cent increase to the operating budget, with 1.9 per cent allocated to the Abbotsford Police Department, primarily to fund the hiring of six new officers and the implementation of E-Comm, a new police radio system. City operations would get the remaining 1.4 per cent. A one per cent increase in taxes equals approximately $1 million. Council also approved its five-year financial plan up to 2015 that included an estimated total tax hike of 17 per cent. Tax increases for the remaining four years included 3.8 per cent rise in 2012, 3.6 in 2013, 2.8 in 2014 and 2.5 in 2015. Bill MacGregor was the sole councillor to

Beverly Beasant and her son Brodi are thankful for the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau, which is making their holiday a little brighter this year.

everly Beasant moves through aisles of the toy room at the Abbotsford Food Bank’s Christmas Bureau with her four-year-old son Brodi, who literally bounces off the walls. “Look mom it’s a Transformer. It’s bumblebee!” Suddenly he’s taking a pink and purple tricycle for a test ride. “It’s OK. It’s OK . . . I’m parking it,” he says to his protesting mother. “Look it’s Mickey Mouse. No Way!” Not once while racing through the room does the young boy demand a toy for himself. “He’s used to seeing things he can’t have, so he doesn’t ask,” says Beasant. The 22-year-old single mom is thankful she and Brodi have the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau to help them through the holidays. “He deserves so much, and that I can’t give it to him hurts,” she says. The Christmas hamper the pair received was filled with food and some toys for Brodi. It also came with a voucher for a turkey or ham, neither of which Beasant could have afforded otherwise. Beasant came from a background where she didn’t have much either. Months after leaving home at age 17 to get a fresh start, she found out she was pregnant. She still finished high school and has managed to

get her level one training in auto mechanics. But she has found out she’s pregnant with her second child, which is due in June. Her relationship with her children’s dad has unravelled although he is still active in Brodi’s life. “He’s a good dad,” says Beasant. “But I’m on my own.” She’s still keen to break into the auto repair trade and build a life for her children. “I have to find someone to apprentice me after the baby is born,” she says. In the meantime, she’s grateful the food bank allows her to stretch her dollars. “Honestly, without them, I wouldn’t be able to give Brodi any Christmas at all.” Abbotsford Food Bank administrator Roberta Hayter said they had 620 families to help, and the bureau was still signing up new families, seniors and HIV positive clients for Christmas hampers as late as yesterday. All the hampers have been distributed, but the food bank is still in dire need, said Hayter. The Abbotsford Food Banks holiday fundraising campaign goal is $500,000 and donations are down. “It’s concerning,” said Hayter. “We’re down about $10,000 from where we were last year at this time. “It’s been a slow year. We lost about 50 sponsor families for our Christmas Bureau.” As of Wednesday total donations were at $305,712. The food bank still badly needs meal supplements like Boost or Ensure, baby formula, powdered milk, and of course cash donations, said Hayter. “And if they drop it off, we’ll take fresh produce and dairy too.”

he biggest buzz so far in the BC Liberal leadership race was generated by Mike de Jong, MLA for Abbotsford West. Mike raised more than a few eyebrows when he suggested lowering the voting age from 18 to 16. Now, I like Mike and wish him well in the leadership contest. But let’s all hope this proposal never sees the light of day. It was bad enough when we gave federal inmates the right to vote. And now this? God help us. Forty years ago I might have said otherwise. In 1971 almost a quarter of youth aged 15 to 19 were full-time members of the work force. Today it stands around six per cent. Why on Earth would we want to let these freeloaders have a vote? Today’s youth unabashedly confide entrylevel jobs aren’t good enough for them and removing one’s piercings or shaving off the Mohawk for a job interview would be a betrayal of their individuality. Yeah, right. Go eat some more Doritos and download another Justin Bieber track. Not too long ago, it was quite common for 16-year-olds to be working full-time helping support their family. The archives are full of stories of youth that lied about their age so they could join the military and defend their country.

JOHN MARTIN

Crime matters Today, a young man typically spends his waking hours in his mom’s basement playing video games and Facebooking his “friends.” “Hey mom, I can’t find my shoes – where’d you put them?” Mike de Jong correctly notes that youth voting participation is dismal and wants them to be more involved with the political process. To this I would ask, “why?” Even the few youth that are genuinely politically engaged consistently get it wrong. Media outlets typically run “youth polls” during elections to see what kind of parliament we’d end up with if the 15- to 25-yearolds could decide the outcome. Time and time again the results show a Green Party Prime Minister and an NDP opposition. Think for a moment what your pay stub would look like under that scenario. Come to think of it, “what pay stub?” Time and time again we’re reminded that anyone under 18 is too young and immature to know right from wrong so we can’t hold them responsible for their criminal activity.

But we should let them influence public policy at each and every level? Hell, we buckled under and gave 16-year-olds the right to drive and we can all see how swell that worked out. Have we learned nothing? No Mike, let’s talk about raising the voting age. Thirty would be ideal but I could live with 27. While we’re at it, I’d add that any person of any age living with their parents, except in health care circumstances of course, should be prohibited from having a vote at all. It used to be a person became an adult at no later than 19 and made his own way in the world. Now we have 35-year-olds living with their Mom and not feeling the least bit ashamed about it. And unbelievably, some of them even have a girlfriend. I can’t vote in the Liberal leadership contest because I don’t have a membership. That seems about right. So why do we want to let people who have yet to join society as gainfully-employed, tax-paying, contributors have a say in how things are run? Let 16-year-olds vote? No way. ■ John Martin is a criminologist at

or most people, Christmas and its constellation of associated holidays are a frantic time. Time to shop for friends and family, then hunt for deals on Boxing Day. Time to hit the grocery store, maybe the liquor store, to get the ingredients for that perfect holiday feast. For others, unfortunately, it’s time to take advantage of the massive holiday shopping spree. Police everywhere are issuing their usual holiday warnings: lock your car, keep presents in the trunk, watch out for suspicious characters. No matter how careful everyone is, of course, someone’s Christmas memories will be tainted. They’ll remember the broken window, the missing presents, the ransacked car, the police report. We could rant and condemn thieves who cause such pain. But in the spirit of the season, instead we’ll ask them to make a change. No one grows up thinking they’ll spend the holiday season breaking and entering, trading stolen goods for a few dollars or a quick fix. It’s a demeaning, miserable existence, the result of very bad choices, some they made for themselves and some made for them, often at a young age. The good news is that, at this time of year, people are more willing than ever to help when a life needs to be turned around. Our communities are filled with organizations that reach out a helping hand, from government agencies to non-profits like the Salvation Army’s shelters, to local churches, to food banks. Even the police can help point someone in need of a new direction towards help. Lives have momentum, and turning one fuelled by drugs and crime around must feel like trying to turn an ocean liner with a canoe paddle. But others have done it. There are those who know how to chart the course, how to steer through the sharp rocks. This Christmas, if you need help, please ask. If you are asked for help, please give it.

Buses cold & empty, more passengers needed Editor, the Times:

Re: your article Bus vs. Trains (Dec. 21 Times). I think we could profit from better bus service within the region and into the city. I hope the planners are aware that most buses in town here run almost totally empty. Maybe I’m just not there when the loaded buses come by, but the Gladwin-Peardonville route that I’ve seen is usually a huge modern bus with no one in it except the driver and one or two passengers. Could we not get some minivans to do this route and save a whole pile of cash? As to the buses, even the “RapidBuses”, where will they drive in connecting to the SkyTrain? Along the No. 1 highway I presume. One advantage would be that instead of one or two people sitting in a car in the long lineup there would be four or five in a huge bus that costs 10 times as much to buy and operate as a small car. I think - and I may be wrong - as long as we try to move people along the same old jam-packed road, we’ll be making no improvements. Is it really true that the light rail system would be so much more expensive? Especially as we look to the future, surely a rail system can be much more flexible and expandable. Frank and Eileen Dyck Abbotsford

The cost of improved transit Editor, the Times:

“Now we know what we should focus on and what it will cost. It’s a given we have to improve the system,” as quoted from your article (Dec. 21 Times). This study and many like it seem to be focused on the wrong aspects of travel in the Fraser Valley area. What is the purpose of transit systems? Isn’t it to move people from one location to another in a timely and comfortable manner? What about those people at the other end of the line who want to travel to the valley for Tradex, Heat games, shopping, air flights and other attractions. Did you know that if I miss the WCE train I could take a bus from Mission to Vancouver? The train would get me downtown in one hour and 18 minutes and the bus would take two hours and 43 minutes. How much time would it take a bus to travel to the Kingsway or future Evergreen line to make connections? Is time part of the

study? Trains keep a timely schedule, buses cannot. Has council ridden one of our buses when it is cold and miserable outside and inside as well. No comfort there. Would I vote for a bus service? Hardly. Why is council concerned about the cost of light rail. Did cost stop the building of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre? Tax increase you say? There are many ways to decrease costs if you study them. How much would the city save by having automatic pedestrian cross lights? When the traffic light turns green the walk light comes on also. Get rid of the crosswalk buttons and eliminate the need to repair them when damaged. Wouldn’t that make it a bit safer for the pedestrian? John Eby Abbotsford

Mike de Jong needs our support Editor, the Times:

I am writing this letter to express my whole-hearted support for Mike de Jong. Mike has been a great MLA for our area, and he has been so for the last seventeen years. He enjoys a well-deserved reputation for honesty and hard work. Mike has been a minister and house leader and done an excellent job. When Mike was on our local school board it was obvious he cared about the people of Abbotsford, including the students in our schools. No government or person is perfect, however if you look back on Mike’s career in provincial politics you can see he has been a wonderful representative for Abbotsford. He has been instrumental in getting things done in our city. In truth, without Mike we would probably still be waiting for a new hospital. I think it would be great to have someone from Abbotsford like Mike in a position to work for everyone in British Columbia. I fully support Mike de Jong in his bid to become leader of the Liberal Party and look forward to the day when he is the premier of our province. Bruce Nicholson Abbotsford

Money should help needy, not go to art Editor, the Times:

That would certainly make it a more appealing and comfortable place to visit. My first trip downtown started with a lady asking if I would like to spend some time with her. I thanked her for the offer, and then she asked if I had any money to spare. I felt very uncomfortable leaving my car there. I will not go down there at night again after hearing horror stories about car break-ins. There is nothing down there that I cannot get at the nearby malls. Tom Lester Abbotsford

Put the Christ back in Christmas Editor, the Times:

I read a statement the other day in regard to “Putting Christ back into Christmas” and I started thinking. Some of our local churches are involved in lawsuits. One church wants to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada and another church is being sued for having a Christian rock festival go south (literally) in their sanctuary. Where does Christ fit into these scenarios? I feel sorry for God who must have all sides involved in these legal wrangles praying for success. Even the lawyers must be saying a quiet prayer on Sunday morning. How does God possibly come out a winner? I was forced to go to the mall the other day and I saw hundreds of people shopping and walking out with large bags of material goods. They would leave with smiles on their faces and diamonds on their fingers in their shiny new cars. I did not see Christ anywhere in the mall. I thought about a tiny village in Africa that I visited on Christmas Day years ago where I saw poverty, starvation and disease in families living in mud huts.

The children played with toys they had made for themselves. I saw more spiritual people in that small village in Africa than I see on our streets of Abbotsford. I agree . . . let us put Christ back into Christmas. Bob Peters Abbotsford

With political rhetoric becoming more polarized, it is important to non-violently challenge anyone advocating extreme views. History has repeatedly shown that it is hard to know what is right when there is nothing, especially free speech, left. Lloyd Atkins Vernon

CAM TUCKER camtuckertimes@gmail.com ever before has there been so much media hype surrounding a game of Scrabble. It started last week when the story broke about Abbotsford’s Harrison Mooney’s viral challenge to Canucks winger Tanner Glass for a man-toman Scrabble showdown. Glass, the feisty, mulletmodelling Ivy League college graduate, quickly accepted Mooney’s robust proposition, and now it appears the two are destined for a meeting of the minds in the new year. “Tanner Glass is known as a smart guy . . . and it seems like it’s right up his alley, but if this guy plays, I want to play him,” said Mooney, who initially goaded Glass on his Canucks blog, Pass it to Bulis. “One of his friends saw it on Twitter, passed it on to his sister, she saw it and passed it on to [Glass], and that’s how it started.” And now the press have jumped on board in an

A12 ❘ NEWS ❘ FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2010 THE TIMES

Scrabble showdown coming in new year SCRABBLE, from page A11 attempt to make this the next big sporting event for B.C.’s south coast. By Saturday, Hockey Night in Canada had picked up on it. The challenge made its way onto HNIC’s nationwide telecast of the Canucks win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. For his part, Mooney has helped spark the frenzy with some good old fashion ribbing. “I’m not going to be a jerk about it, but I’m pretty good,” Mooney said. “Trounce is a seven-letter word. Just saying. Word is he’s not that experienced. He just enjoys the game and I think that’s most people’s experience with Scrabble.” All kidding aside, Mooney takes his Scrabble very seriously. The 25-year-old used the word ‘junkie’ more than once to describe his love affair with the board game. An avid Canucks fan, Mooney graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley with a bachelor degree in English, and is working towards his masters in the same subject at Trinity Western University. “Scrabble is to me what hockey is to Tanner Glass. This is my turf,” he said. “I think I’m getting painted like a monomaniacal nerd, but the reality is I just really enjoy playing Scrabble and I think this will be a really fun experience.” A casual competitor of the vernacular board

game, Glass is game for the challenge. T-shirts featuring Glass and the words “Tanner Glass Scrabble Champ” in mimic of a Scrabble board have been designed and will be on sale in 2011 on the Pass it to Bulis website. “We’ve heard they’re building an Abbotsford [Canuck Place] hospice and we’d love to see the money go towards that.” The charitable aspect easily won over Glass. “How can I say no?” he said. “I’ve heard the guys that want to play me are having T-shirts made up so as long as some of the proceeds go to charity, I don’t see why not.” With hockey players these days being perceived as boring for their sometimes mundane post-game answers to the inquiring media and fans, Mooney thinks Glass is the perfect person to accept this challenge. “I know he’s got a lot of personality,” said Mooney. “He seems like a smart guy. He’s always seemed like a smart guy, and I think this will be really great for him. “More than anything, it’s intimidating going up against a guy who fights for a living and Scrabble can get pretty hairy.” For more information, check out www.passittobulis.blogspot.com. – WITH VANCOUVER SUN FILES

Neighbour fights fire and saves Christmas

A quick-thinking neighbour ensured that residents in an Abbotsford townhouse complex weren’t burned out of their homes at Christmas. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service said a tragedy was narrowly averted Tuesday night. The fast action of a neighbour with a fire extinguisher and a working smoke alarm kept the blaze from escalating into a major structure fire that would have damaged several townhouse units, said AFRS acting Lieut. Martin Sunderland. The fire department was called out to the residential kitchen fire in a townhouse complex on Trafalgar Street at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and a small fire in the kitchen cupboards, but they

were able to quickly extinguish the fire. The neighbour with a fire extinguisher initially brought the fire under control. The homeowner had been melting wax in a double boiler pot on the stove, and left it unattended. The pot boiled dry and ignited the wax, causing a large fireball. The blaze destroyed the stove, microwave and kitchen cupboards and caused approximately $5,000 in damages. The homeowner discovered the fire after her smoke alarm sounded. Cooking is the number one cause of house fires during the busy holiday season, Sunderland warned. – STAFF REPORTER

Silver lining for Heat rookie Greg Nemisz reflects on World Junior memories CAM TUCKER camtuckertimes@gmail.com

T

here’s nothing quite like it in the world, says Greg Nemisz. Skating out onto the ice in Saskatoon, wearing the traditional red and white Team Canada jersey with thousands more attached to the bodies of boisterous, patriotic fans on the other side of the glass are just some of the memories the Abbotsford Heat rookie will cherish from his days at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships. “It was amazing. I grew up watching that tournament, and it’s so big, especially in Canada and it was just an unbelievable experience,” said Nemisz, grinning. “It’s pretty hard to put into words. Every game was just crazy in there, and you can’t even really hear yourself think for the first couple of shifts in the game. It’s pretty special.” The experience came to a heartbreaking end, however, as Nemisz and his band of Canuck brethren lost the gold medal game to the U.S. in the most dramatic fashion. Down 5-3 late in the third period, Canada got a pair of goals from – who else? – Jordan Eberle to send the game to overtime and the overwhelming Canadian contingent of

Greg Nemisz, left, and other members of Team Canada look on in dejection after losing the gold medal game of the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships, 6-5 in overtime this past January. Nemisz, the Abbotsford Heat rookie, will watch the 2011 tournament, which begins Boxing Day from Buffalo, New York. fans into pandemonium. The euphoria didn’t last long. John Carlson scored on Canadian netminder Martin Jones in the four-on-four overtime period to give the Americans their first gold medal since the 2004 tournament. More impor tantly, the goal disrupted Canada’s reign of five straight gold medals at the Under-

20 competition. “It’s tough to come up short like that,” said Nemisz, now tied for top spot on the Heat in scoring with nine goals – three of which are shorthanded – and 17 points. “It was a crazy game, we had a good round robin games against the U.S., too and they were a good team. “We were up, we were down, and

even in overtime we just missed a chance. I thought it was over for us and they went down and scored themselves.” Despite not winning the gold this past January, Nemisz will park himself in front of the TV for the 2011 tournament, which begins with a highly touted bout between Canada and Russia, Boxing Day from Buffalo, New York.

His old Windsor Spitfires teammate Ryan Ellis, who Nemisz won back-to-back Memorial Cups with, was named captain of Team Canada and will patrol the blue line for a third straight year in the quest to win back the gold medal “He’s a great player and a great leader,” said Nemisz of Ellis. “It’s great to see, and he’ll do a good job.”

Believe it: Healthier, the happier

M

ost of us would agree that health is a top priority. One of God’s names is Jehovah Rapha meaning “The Lord Our Healer.” Healing is part of our blood covenant as a believer in Christ. 3 John 1:2 says, “I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in good health even as your soul prospers.” We are to trust God to do His part as we are responsible to do our part. Having a plan is vital to instill new habits towards a healthier you. Here are seven practical steps you can take towards living a healthy lifestyle. ■ Retrain your metabolism. For example, men and women who lift weights three times a week, three sets a session, burn an extra 100 calories in the two hours after each workout. A pound of muscle

ALICE MARYNIUK

Above and beyond burns 40 to 50 calories a day. You can build five pounds of muscle in three months. Hire a fitness trainer to help you to find the right workout for you, and to help you maintain good form when you exercise. ■ Beat workout boredom. Doing the same workout repeatedly soon leads to physical or mental boredom. Try a new class at the gym or a new exercise DVD, or exercise with others. ■ Exercise the same time every day. Research says that 75 percent

of those who exercise first thing in the morning are still exercising a year later. Find the best time to exercise for you and get into the habit of doing it. ■ Downsize your diet. Studies show that people who consume the bulk of their calories by midday tend to be better able to control their weight. Eat a bigger breakfast and lunch and a smaller dinner. Do not eat after 6 o’clock in the evenings. ■ Get more sleep. Getting up at the same time every day and not being a night owl will help you to have a routine. Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark and your mattress is comfortable. Take out the television and the computer. Your bedroom should be for sleeping not for working. In the hour before bed it may be helpful

to do some light reading or listening to relaxing music. Proverbs 3:24 says, “When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.” Praying before you fall to sleep is helpful to keep your mind on the Lord. ■ Make it easy to succeed. Take time or organize your environment. Get rid of excess clutter and things that drain your energy. Plan healthy meals and have all the ingredients on hand. Plan your day the night before. Proverbs 16:9 says, “We should make plans counting on God to direct us.” ■ Let go of stress and worry. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious or worried, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Loneliness teaches us life lessons

C

hristmas is both the happiest and saddest time of the year. If you are part of a wonderful family and have good friends near, then this will be a Christmas to look forward to. Perhaps this is your first Christmas season without a loved one – a spouse has left, a parent has passed away or your best friend rarely calls you back. All the clatter of Christmas advertising and the teeming crowds in the stores seem to be in stark contrast to the quietness of your house or apartment. Wherever you look, happy couples and families are enjoying the season. You know they’ll soon be back home sharing a meal and gathering beside a cozy fireplace. Just after high school, I took a job as a desk clerk at a small hotel in an isolated community on the windswept coast of Vancouver Island. It was a company town and the

I recall sitting in my hotel room after my shift, looking down on the parking lot and watching the gray rain flood over the rusty cars. My boss, the hotel manager, seemed to be intoxicated much of the time. A longtime friend suddenly arrived one day in early November to say he had accepted a job as a cook in the hotel. It was nice to have him around. He bought some Christmas lights at the local co-op and decorated our room. They flashed

A day after telling me, he left by float plane. The Christmas lights continued to flash, a reminder that he had gone. Sometimes I would leave them on all night and go to sleep with the on-off colored glow as company. Christmas Day approached, and the weather grew stormy. Supplies did not get through, and the seaplanes could not fly. I phoned my parents and they said my gifts had been sent. My presents had not reached them either. I awoke on Christmas to the sound of driving rain and spent most of the day in my room. At dinnertime the only other guest in the hotel, a stranded seaplane pilot, and I were served turkey in the ocean-view dining

those caught in the meaningless web of shopping and decorating. Being alone at Christmas can draw you closer to Him. Perhaps your prayer life will be richer and your study of the Word more enthusiastic this lonely Christmas season. Perhaps, also, you will have more time to think about others. For opportunities to serve during the Christmas season, contact a pastor at a local church and let him or her know of your availability. Perhaps there is a person in a similar position to yours and is just waiting for an invitation to dinner. Being alone is not our first choice this time of year, and I would certainly not choose to relive my lonesome experience in that bleak Vancouver Island village. However as Christians, we can find meaning and purpose in Jesus, whatever our circumstances.

room. The pilot, angry at being trapped in the town, ate quickly and returned to his room. I lingered for a moment, talked briefly to the cook, who was cleaning up before returning to her family, and then went back to my room. I pressed my head into my pillow and cried myself to sleep. Today, as a Christian, I often reflect on that experience. If you’re facing the prospect of a Christmas alone, perhaps for the first time, take comfort in Christ, our Saviour, who knows your anguish and knows your pain. In the Bible in Hebrews 13:5, you are told that God will never leave you nor forsake you. He is a wonderful helper, a friend who wants to comfort you, especially during your difficult times. The knowledge of the living Christ so surpasses the commercial clutter of this season that it might even be tempting to pity

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships, agreements, negotiations, relocation, opportunities, dealings with the public, and love. This area has become the prime one of your life, and will remain so to at least 2024. You’ve already discovered that others are more stubborn, yet more attractive than they were last decade, and that you must change to accommodate them. Another hint of this arrives Sunday. The choice is love or alienation: nothing in-between. Arguments might arise to midweek (Wednesday). Be diplomatic! Romance, exciting meetings arise Wednesday to Friday. Woo someone! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sweet love and a winning streak fill the weeks ahead! If single, you’ll definitely be attracted to someone. An “instant wedding” could occur. However, realize two things: one, anyone first met (or affair begun) Sunday through Wednesday will always contain jealousy or resentment; and two, in general, loves begun between 2004 and next March (2011) will tend toward unpredictable surprises and sudden changes. Take care with money Monday/ Tuesday. Friends, travel and communications veer toward success Thursday/Friday. Home, family, or an intimate crowd please you most Friday eve, Saturday.

Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious – show talents, display support for others, work hard, protect projects, but launch new ideas, ventures Thursday onward, not before. Sunday will be chore-filled. Relationships loom in importance Monday/Tuesday, but friction is more prevalent than harmony. Realize this is not your decade to win wars – battles maybe, not wars. (On the other hand, you can hop on an elevator of accomplishment if you co-operate.) Deep changes, finances, intimacy and health factors head for a successful conclusion Wednesday to Friday. Delays end! Saturday’s gentle, happy and wise! Taurus April 20-May 20: Wider understanding, compassion, love, far travel, legal matters, advertising, statistics, insurance, religion, concepts, higher education – these come to the fore. Life feels more serene. Still, there are numerous problems Sunday to Wednesday morning – in these very areas. These are complex, subtle problems, in which solutions and causes seem to mingle. Your best approach, unless you have a clear idea, is to sit and wait it out. Recent delays end by Thursday, so you can march forth in relationships, love, negotiations and contracts this day forward. Friday morning’s lucky for these! Gemini May 21-June 20: Mysteries, secrets, psychological depths, intimacy, sexual yearnings, subconscious promptings, large finances, investments and debt, lifestyle changes and commitments – these fill your days over the weeks ahead. Don’t start anything (especially in these areas) before Thursday. You would get caught in an eternal circling around a problem. But Thursday onward promises success. (However, realize this is not a big investment year, with the exception of investment in your own career/ business.) Health matters are significant for several weeks. Enlist a doctor, if needed. Relationships please Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays end Thursday. Don’t start anything before then. This week and the next few nudge you into domestic surroundings and a restful stance. Various problems arise Sunday to Wednesday. You might decide to end a relationship. This is complex, with pluses and minuses. If you feel a calm, quiet disappointment about this situation, that’s your answer. Sunday provides one more clue that this decade focuses on a deep, major change of home. That might be a change of address, or other change. It’s necessary, so flow with it. Chase money Thursday through Friday morning: your luck’s high! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Don’t start any projects or relationships before Thursday. Communications, travel, casual friendships, paperwork and details fill this week and the next few – they will transform this entire decade. Shorter-term, problems and flaws become apparent in these Sunday to Wednesday, connected to work issues or more private, secret shortcomings. Well, work with a good heart. By Wednesday p.m. your energy and charisma rise, and you’re headed toward success, harmony, even love, by Friday daytime! Friday night and Saturday are easy, sensual, good for spending and wooing (not necessarily linked). Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings, spending, selling, possessions and rote learning. A major change rolls slowly through this zone all this decade and half of next. You can build a castle of money! Sunday holds a clue, probably involving your career, ambitions or status. You’re happy Monday to Wednesday, but you face problems and barriers in money and social wishes: be patient. Though you’re tired Thursday/Friday, luck accompanies government or school applications, spiritual and charity efforts. Your energy and charisma rise in time for a New Year’s party! Recent delays end.

Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and confidence surge – for a few weeks. But don’t start anything before Thursday. Until then, handle two concerns: one, you must decide between ending or investing further (more time/effort) in a particular ambition or career direction. If you can’t decide, wait until Thursday/Friday, when you’ll get a lucky glimpse of your future, and how to get there. The second concern is more important, and centres on Sunday: your entire “self” is changing: what you want, and want to be. Think this through Sunday, ponder, take your thoughts seriously. All is good! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to lie low, rest and contemplate for the few weeks ahead. You’ll deal with government agencies, institutions or charitable agencies. Be spiritual. Plan for the future – but don’t make any plans before Thursday. Sunday to Wednesday contains a few subtle hints that your inner world needs transformation. Perhaps your inner anger doesn’t “fit” your larger sense of right and wrong. What’s out of kilter? Be ambitious Thursday through Friday morning – your efforts could end with a stroke of luck! Your social side and optimism emerge just in time for New Years! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes come true, flirtations invite you and your popularity rises – this week and the next couple. Plans and optimism hover around money and possessions. However, proceed cautiously before Thursday – start nothing, not even a relationship. And realize your hopes and your “net worth” are not in agreement – and “net worth” has the final say. Your hopes need a revision, as Sunday will show (subtly or not). When your view turns unselfish, turns to wider topics such as real love, true luck and success enter – Thursday into Friday morning. Saturday’s ambition is achievable! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Merry Christmas – RAFE ARNOTT/TIMES

Students filled the air with song as Jackson Elementary School celebrated the 2010 holiday season with their annual Christmas concert last week. Parents, friends and family joined teachers and students in song, dance, and festivities as the school year winds down in preparation for the holidays.

– JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES

Youngsters at Dr. Roberta Bondar Elementary School don Santa hats for their annual holiday concert “It’s a Holly Jolly Christmas” last week at the school.
