Not a city of lovers? Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Love is, apparently, not all around us in Burnaby. The city was ranked the 17th most romantic city in Canada in Amazon. ca’s top 20 list, released on Tuesday. The cities on the list had to have more than 100,000 residents, and have the highest rate per capita for buying romance novels, relationship and sex books, romantic-comedy DVDs and Michael Bublé CDs through Amazon since Jan. 1, 2011. Victoria was ranked most romantic city in Canada. “Victoria proves brains are sexy too, not only earning the honour of all-around Most Romantic City 2011, but also as the biggest consumer of romantic books,” the release states. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver didn’t make the list, but Ottawa did, at number 20. Eleven of the cities were in Ontario, and Brantford, Ont. was the largest per capita purchaser of Michael Bublé CDs.

Love is in the air – or not: Burnaby is full of romantic places, not the least of which is the urban sanctuary that is Deer Lake Park. But Burnaby ranked only 17th on a top 20 list of most romantic cities in Canada, put out by Amazon.ca.
Siksay’s transgender rights bill passes Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
It’s been six years in the making for the Burnaby-Douglas MP, but Bill Siksay’s transgendered rights bill finally passed on Wednesday. The bill, if passed by the Senate, will amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression. It will also change the Criminal Code of Canada
so hate speech against transgendered and transsexual people is covered. Bill C-389 passed 143 to 135, with members from all parties in the House of Commons onside. “I was very happy and relieved,” Siksay said. “I was nervous. I knew it was going to be close, ... I was on pins and needles.” Siksay introduced the bill six years ago, following consultations with transgendered communities across Canada to see what changes they wanted.
BURNABY FAMILY LIFE CELEBRATING 40 YEARS
“(It) was very clear that it was a change in the Canadian Human Rights Act,” Siksay said. Gender identity refers to how one feels or sees themselves as male or female (or somewhere in between) and isn’t always based on biological sex. For instance, one may be born biologically male and identify as female. Gender expression is the performance of that self-defined identity. For the trans community, the changes from Siksay’s bill would mean they can
seek human rights protection if they are discriminated against on the basis of gender identity or expression, but only in areas of federal jurisdiction, such as transportation, communications and banking. As for the Criminal Code changes, if someone assaults a transgendered person, based on hatred against trans folks, a judge can add additional jail time to the sentence. “What this bill does is make it explicit, Siksay Page 4

F
ive-year-old Nadia Ulanowska sits on a bench on the upper level at Metropolis at Metrotown, showing off the ankle foot orthotics she got with help from Variety – the Children’s Charity. “I choose the pattern,” she says, grinning and pulling up a pink pant leg. Underneath is a type of plastic ankle brace with Velcro straps, covered in pink hearts. First it was soccer balls, then butterflies, and now hearts. When Nadia was two, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. At five, she ON MY BEAT walks using tiny Jennifer Moreau pink crutches, and the special orthotics help straighten her gait since her toes tend to turn inwards. She gets to pick the pattern each year. Nadia has big dark eyes, brown hair pulled back with barrettes and a headstrong demeanour, as her mother would say. She likes running and taking pictures of people. Nadia’s mom, Fatima, explains why her daughter wears the orthotics. “We want to prevent her from having surgery,” she says. Every year, Nadia outgrows the orthotics because her feet get a bit bigger, and every year the family has to get a new pair, which cost about $2,000. That’s where Variety comes in. For the past 45 years, the children’s charity has been helping B.C. families with kids who have special needs. They help provide things like wheelchairs, specialized equipment, cochlear implants, feeding pumps and bicycles. Some of the kids helped by Variety have debilitating conditions – they can’t move or speak, or are barely 6

un, family and gratitude The Ulanowskis are a family of six. Fatima works full time, and her husband Roman runs an ice-cream shop in the mall. Then there are the two-yearold twins and grandma, who also lives with the family. If Variety weren’t there to help, there wouldn’t be food on the table, Fatima jokes. “I guess we’d survive because we’d be going more in debt,” she says. “Our business is really struggling.” Variety also helps pay for things like horseback riding and gymnastics. “It makes me so happy because I see the smile on her face every time we do those activities,” says Fatima.
The gymnastics lessons are a type of one-on-one movement therapy that helps Nadia be more in control of her movement, and the horseback riding helps with her confidence, Fatima says. “I get to do trots,” Nadia interjects, enthusiastically. Because of the Variety connection, Nadia also got invited on a special airplane ride to the “North Pole,” where Santa came onboard the plane to greet the kids. Fatima also talks of a specialized but costly bike that Nadia may get through the children’s charity. Nadia doesn’t really understand what Variety is – all she knows is he gets to do fun things – but mom is very cognizant of the organization that helps with the costs attached to raising a child with special needs. “Variety has helped us accomplish many activities for Nadia,” says Fatima.

The telethon is presented by Global TV and features stories of children that have been helped by the organization, as well as entertainment. The first telethon was in 1966 and raised $60,000, and last year’s fundraiser garnered $7.4 million. The money is raised in B.C. and stays in the province. “(The telethon) is an important reminder that there are many children out there who still need Variety’s help,” said Barbie Hislop, Variety’s executive director. “We are receiving more grant requests than ever before and need the continuous support of donors to maintain and increase our assistance to families.” To see the telethon, tune into Global B.C. on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. through to Sunday, Feb. 13. Nadia is going to be one of “Steve’s darlings,” part of a group of Variety kids that Global News anchor Steve Darling invites in front of the camera to help host the telethon. To catch Nadia on TV, watch on Sunday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. later that same evening. For more, visit www.variety.bc.ca. ◆ An afterword about the theft: On a sad note, Nadia was playing with her mom’s IPhone, while I was talking with Fatima for the interview at Metrotown. Not five minutes in, some young man sat down close to us and stole Fatima’s phone after Nadia had put it down on the bench. This is a working, struggling family of six. If you are the one who stole the phone and you are reading this, do the right thing and take it back to Metrotown security, and stop stealing from the hands of small children. jmoreau@burnabynow.com

Three schools get playground money from city
Kids at three Burnaby schools will have the chance to cavort on new equipment after city council approved plans to move forward with playground upgrades. Confederation Park and Buckingham elementary schools were each approved for $3,000
Gilmore Community School was put on a waitlist until October. University Highlands was refused because it had not yet raised the 50 per cent of funds required by the city before funding is approved. Gilmore Community School
in funding from the city for their playground upgrades, and Rosser Elementary School was approved for $1,560. However, University Highlands Elementary School’s request for playground development funding was denied, and
received funding in 2010, so it has been put on a waitlist until October, to be reconsidered if the city doesn’t receive any first-time grant requests by then. However, there is only $1,440 left in the 2010 operating budget for playground upgrades after
the funding for the three schools was approved. The city’s operating budget includes $9,000 for playground upgrades. Schools are chosen on a firstcome, first-served basis. – Janaya Fuller-Evans
Siksay: Transgender rights get new protection continued from page 1
so people looking at the legislation see themselves in it,” Siksay said. It also sends a message to people who would discriminate against transgendered or transsexual people, he added. Siksay has received positive reaction to the bill passing. “There were some folk in the gallery for the vote, … and we had a bit of a reception celebration afterwards, lots of very, very positive response,” he said. While the bill covers gender identity and expression, it doesn’t cover discrimination based on biological sex. The Canadian Human Rights Act covers sex-based discrimination, but
the Criminal Code doesn’t. “I don’t know why it’s not there,” Siksay said, referring to the Criminal Code. “In many cases of violence against women, you could argue it’s motivated by hatred against women.” If legislation came forward about that, Siksay added, he would support it. The trans rights bill is not a done deal yet. It could die on paper if there is a spring election, and the Senate could defeat it, although Siksay’s more worried about the former than the latter. It’s also rare for a private member’s bill to make it all the way to the Senate, Siksay pointed out, and it’s the only bill of his that’s passed
third reading in the House. In December, Siksay announced he would not seek re-election after 25 years in politics, and he would be happy to be remembered by the trans rights bill. “It’s been an incredibly important project for me, getting to work with the trans community,” he said. “Learning more about what gender identity is about has been a real privilege for me.” There are still other matters the trans community has to grapple with, Siksay noted – mainly issues around identity documents and whether sex reassignment surgery is covered by provincial medical plans. www.twitter.com/JenniferMoreau

She’s heading to the Oscars Local jewelry designer’s work to be showcased Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Many people dream of making it to the Oscars, but one lucky Burnaby resident will make that dream come true this month. Alyson Johnson, a custom jewelry designer based in the Forest Grove neighbourhood, has been invited to showcase her creations at the pre-Oscar Baby Boom Boom Room event. “I’m super excited,” she says. The suite is set up for celebrity parents attending the Oscars prior to the Academy Awards. Johnson’s company, Aly Dahl Designs, was invited to be involved by the event’s host Jayneoni Moore, whose assistant follows Johnson on Twitter and contacted her. “Social media can pay off,” Johnson says, laughing. The opportunity is the kind of thing she dreamed about. When she was just starting her business, she had a conversation with a friend about how great it would be to feature her wares at an event with celebrities. “I never expected it to happen,” Johnson says. Her one-of-a-kind jewelry features fingerprints (and, in the case of pets, nose and paw prints) set in silver. While she originally had the idea of marketing the jewelry for new mothers, to preserve baby fingerprints, she’s had a lot of response
from parents of older children as well, she says. Husbands and wives also come to her for anniversary gifts, best friends exchange her pieces, and pet owners get jewelry made from imprints of their dogs and cats’ noses, according to Johnson. She attended the selfemployment program at Douglas College in New West in September 2009. She had been in finance for 15 years, she says, and felt dissatisfied after returning to work after having her son. So when the recession hit, she took the opportunity to go back to school and learn how to run her own business. Johnson had been making jewelry as a hobby for 10 years, using the fingerprint concept in her designs. But some people still have difficulty envisioning what it will look like, she says. She hopes her foray to Los Angeles for the Oscars will change that. Johnson heads to Hollywood on Feb. 22. She is taking her two children with her, she says, and they’ll be staying with their grandmother in Palm Springs. “They’re so excited,” she says of her five-year-old daughter and three-yearold son. “Normallytheygetpulled along for mom’s work, and it’s so boring, Johnson says, “and now they get to go to Disneyland.” She plans to showcase samples of her work and give out 250 impression kits at the Boom Boom Room in Beverly Hills on Feb. 25 and 26. The Boom Boom Room is

Many people have no idea how much fat, salt or sugar they ingest, or what their daily limit should be. If our government is serious about improving our quality of life and rescuing our teetering medical system, it must push this project farther.
Every package of processed food in this country should loudly announce the number of calories and quantity of sodium – at the very least – it contains. At the same time, provincial and federal governments must step up their education campaigns to the point that Canadians have their recommended daily limits seared into their minds. The investment, which would be modest, would pay fat dividends.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Why put down private schools? Dear Editor
Re: Private schools at the top, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 9. Why is it that we can’t celebrate the achievements of others without finding some way to explain away their successes to make ourselves feel better? Peter Cowley of the Fraser Institute and Diana Mumford of the Burnaby school district are quick to explain that private schools do better in the Foundation Skills Assessment tests because they can pick and choose their students and kick out those who are disruptive. However, a brief glance at the top five Burnaby schools reveals that they are all Catholic or Protestant schools, which typically admit students of all abilities – they only ask that families share a common

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Keep up the pressure continued from page 6
on society when a corporate heavyweight like Nestle and its spokesperson, Mr. Challinor, try to counter an initiative by a determined and thoughtful group of high school students. While bottled water has a smaller carbon footprint than other bottled beverages, its footprint is substantially higher than tap water. This is the real issue. This is the reason why bottled beverages of all sorts have no place in public schools except in the case of an emergency. Additionally, Mr. Challinor questions the accuracy of Mr. Cech’s and Ms. Moreau’s facts and then goes on to play fast and loose with his own numbers. Encorp may have indeed recovered about 75.5 per cent of plastic beverage containers in 2008 and 2009, but that would also suggest that over 118 million containers went unrecovered in 2008 and over 120 million unrecovered in 2009. Clearly, millions of bottles did in fact end up in landfills as originally reported. Furthermore, bottled water has become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. In Canada, between 1999 and 2005 per capita consumption increased by more than 145 per cent from 24.4L to 60L. If Mr. Challinor’s claim that bottled water reduces obesity was true, we should expect to see a dramatic decline in obesity in Canada over the same period. This is not the case. Obesity has continued to rise despite increased access to bottled water. Additionally, the incidence of diabetes in the general population increased 1.4 per cent between 2003 and 2009. Any effort to reduce consumption of bottled beverages, including water, and to promote the consumption of our safe public water supply should be commended. The only choice that students need to make is between helping the environment or harming it. Hopefully, Mr. Challinor’s response will embolden students to keep up pressure on the school district and bottled water manufacturers. Rick McGowan, Burnaby
Child crisis affects us all Dear Editor:
The headlines continue in response to representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s aggregate review of 21 infant deaths in B.C. I am glad that is so. As chair of the B.C. Association of Social Workers’ child welfare committee, it is very easy to endorse the recommendations in the report. The research, the stories and the analysis are stark and compelling. In all honesty, I have struggled to find a response that can add to the arguments and dialogue. Reporters have done their homework well. My struggle is based in the reality that solid facts based on solid research on essential changes in law, policy, service delivery and practice have been presented to all levels of government and the public for many decades. If even a small
percentage of those “facts” and the resulting recommendations had been acted upon years ago, we would all feel the benefits and families would be experiencing much better realities today. It baffles and in fact stuns me that it seems so easy for too many of us to ignore those living in poverty and unsafe conditions to the extent that children die. We don’t want to look at the harsh realities our values, politics, practices and priorities have created. Parents still are blamed, or addictions or mental illness or family history. I have been working in the social work field for four decades. Forty years ago, we knew that solving poverty would benefit all. We knew it was never going to be as simple as creating jobs. We knew we Canadians had to shift our attitudes and perspectives and join a movement to end poverty, violence and inequities. We had to mend the old wrongs of colonialism. We had to face our classism and our personal contribution to the perpetuation of impoverishment and injustice and prejudice. We all play a role in letting the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and in allowing government after government to make promises or offer Band-Aids or test “new” theories and initiatives. No one ministry, one social worker, one health worker can solve all the issues that contribute to the death, abuse or neglect of children. Responsibility for the depth of poverty faced by so many children and families in B.C. lies with all of us. We have the power, the right and the responsibility to insist on and support action on Mary Ellen’s recommendations, on First Call’s demands to end child poverty, on the bottomless pit of research that clearly shows that universal childcare, safe affordable housing, living wages, a fair minimum wage and welfare benefits are essential. For the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the solutions are complex yet possible. It is not as simple as reducing case load size. The quality of social work practice must be high and consistent provincewide. This requires professional social work education, solid hiring procedures, and ongoing access to training “on the job.” There are times when a caseload of three families can fill every working hour and other times when a caseload of 30 might be manageable. Systems must be in place to manage those unpredictable fluctuations in need for intervention. Access to skilled and supportive supervision is essential for social workers. Access for families to strong, well-funded, community social and health services is also essential and we are very aware of those service disparities across the province. Investment in children and families, in ending poverty and violence, is the only ethical and socially and economically prudent route for any progressive government to take. The benefits will be felt in all sectors: health, justice, education, child safety. Invest in prevention must be our call to all levels of government. Carol Ross, chair, B.C. Association of Social Workers, child welfare and family committee

Third NDP hopeful in race
The third and likely last candidate has stepped forward for the NDP nomination in Burnaby Douglas, and he’s after the “diversity vote.” Alnoor Gova was approved as the third candidate on Feb. 10. He immigrated to Canada from East Africa as a child, but his parents are South Asian. “I think the other two candidates are wonderful, but I don’t think they can reach out to the diversity vote,” Gova said, pointing to changing demographics in Burnaby, where more than half the population speaks something other than English as a first language. “I don’t feel the other two candidates will be able to make inroads in to these communities. … I feel I straddle both worlds.” Gova is a community activist and a host
with CO-OP Radio. He has lived in the Burnaby-Douglas riding for 25 years and is working on his PhD. In December, the current BurnabyDouglas MP, Bill Siksay, announced he was not running for re-election. SFU professor Kennedy Stewart and Sam Schechter, a former city councillor on the North Shore, are already in the race to replace him. Prospective candidates still have till Feb. x19 to get in the race, but riding association president Lil Cameron isn’t expecting anyone else to come forward. There is an all-candidates’ debate on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m, at Confederation Centre, 4585 Albert St. Riding association members will pick the new candidate Friday, Feb. 25. To contact Gova, call his cell at 778-231-2110.

Mall takes a stand against bullying The city’s largest shopping centre will be going pink next week. Metropolis at Metrotown is taking action against bullying and is encouraging people from across the Lower Mainland to learn more and sign its community pledge to live a bully-free life. Beginning Feb. 17, members of the community will have the opportunity to learn valuable information about anti-bullying through an educational display that will be hosted in the shopping centre’s Grand Court. The display is designed to teach people of all ages how to recognize bullying, what to do if someone they know is being bullied and how to be proactive in protecting someone from bullying. Members of the community will be given an opportunity to show their commitment to lead a bully-free life by signing their name at the exhibit. “We see this as an opportunity to take part in activities in and around Pink Shirt Day (on Feb. 23),” said Brenda Longland, public and community relations manager for Metropolis at Metrotown. “By doing so, our goal is to empower youth to take action and stand up for each other.” The shopping centre has also enlisted Jim Jordan, motivational speaker and president of Report Bullying, to visit Burnaby schools and speak to youth about anti-bullying. The initiative will run in conjunction with Pink Shirt Day, taking place on Feb. 23 and recognized provincewide as anti-bullying day. On that day, everyone is encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize that society will not tolerate bullying anywhere. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

SFU welcomes largest-ever donation Ryan Beedie gives $22 million to Simon Fraser University’s business school Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
One of the primary reasons to make money is to give it away, according to Ryan Beedie. Ryan, president of industrial real estate developer The Beedie Group, made a sizeable donation of $22 million to his alma mater, Simon Fraser University, on Wednesday. Ryan and his father, Keith Beedie, made the donation to SFU’s business school, now the Beedie School of Business. It is the largest individual donation SFU has ever received. “It’s already a great school,” Ryan said. “My hope is this will improve its ability to attract top professors and top students.” He attributes his success in business, and the success of The Beedie Group, to his time at the university. “There’s a direct link between the two,” he says, pointing out how the business has succeeded under his helm since the mid-’90s. Ryan earned his bachelor of business administration at the university in 1991, and went on to the University of British Columbia for his master’s, completing it in 1993. Ryan’s father Keith was always very encouraging of his educational pursuits, he says, though Keith did not go to university himself. Despite only completing Grade 11, and then joining the military, Ryan says his father has a huge respect for higher education. “This further reinforces his commitment to education.” The Beedie Group has been based in Burnaby for about 60 years, and Keith lives in the city, Ryan says. “We have very strong roots in this community,” he adds. He began thinking of making a large donation to SFU a year ago, when he read a business article about how well-to-do people don’t give back as much as they can, and why. He chose SFU after considering what he

While the school bears the Beedie name, Ryan will not direct where the funding goes. SFU plans to use the gift to create an endowment supporting students, professorships and research chairs. The gift will help make the school a global thought leader in areas such as innovation and entrepreneurship, Asia Pacific business studies, risk management and sustainability, according to Daniel Shapiro, dean of the newly named Beedie School of Business. Shapiro suggested the funding be focused on people because business educa-
tion is very globally competitive, Shapiro says. Attracting the best educators, and the best students, is key, he adds. “It’ll allow us to be competitive,” he says, adding the school plans to specialize in certain areas that reflect business interests in Metro Vancouver, such as sustainability and entrepreneurship. The school was planning to do so, and to recruit top-level educators, he says, but the funding has accelerated that plan. The school currently has 77 faculty members. Shapiro is hoping to build the faculty up to 90. “Still makes it a small business school,” he says. “We kind of like it that way.” Recruiting the right people will take about three years, he says, adding that the
school is starting the recruitment process now. The university was planning to find someone for naming rights to the business school when Ryan came along with his large-scale donation plan, SFU president Andrew Petter says. “Most business schools are named, but ours has not been,” he explains. The fact that the name goes to a grateful SFU alumnus is even better, he adds. “It’s a wonderful story when someone appreciates their education so much,” Petter says. Sixty per cent of the money will go towards hiring the best minds possible, with scholarships and bursaries another focus, to attract and train the future leaders of tomorrow, he says.
Kinder Morgan boosts local school library MOVERS & SHAKERS Janaya Fuller-Evans

he library at Forest Grove Elementary will be a little more tech savvy after receiving a $5,000 donation from the Kinder Morgan Foundation on Tuesday.
The money will go towards a SMART Board, new tables and chairs and updated books, according to a press released from the company. “Forest Grove’s library introduces many young students to the joys of reading,” said Bruce Jamer, operations director for Kinder Morgan. “We’re pleased that our support will help them do this for many years to come.” The foundation donates to youth initia-
tives and organizations in the communities where it has its operations, including Burnaby.
Vancity hands out grants
Vancity gave $69,500 in total to seven organizations last month, including five non-profits based in Burnaby. The recipients were the Cameray Community Fund, the Down Syndrome Research Foundation,
the Journey Home Community Association, the Neil Squire Society and the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House. The credit union also provided funds to the Julien House Society in New West, and the PoCo Dots Daycare in Port Coquitlam. The grants were presented at a luncheon on Jan. 28 with Patrice Pratt, chair of the Vancity board of directors, speaking at the event.
The community project grants program funds organizations that focus on social, environmental and community wellbeing, according to a press release.

Tree of Life
The Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life cam-
paign, run jointly with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, raised $6,130 to go towards purchasing a birthing bed for the hospital’s maternity ward. Three Burnaby Shoppers Drug Mart locations worked to raise the funds – Centrepoint store at 4827 Kingsway, the Old Orchard store at 4800 Kingsway and the Metropolis at Metrotown store at 4429 Kingsway – with customers purchas-
ing a leaf for the paper tree for $1, a butterfly for $5 or a cardinal for $50. Employees also contributed by hosting pub nights and events to help raise the money. A birthing bed costs about $21,000. Do you have an item you’d like to see in Movers & Shakers? Hospice workshop set HERE & NOW
Jennifer Moreau
D
ealing with death is hard enough, but when you’re the primary caregiver for someone who’s dying, the experience can be even more taxing. That’s why the Burnaby Hospice Society is hosting a free workshop to help people who are caring for a loved one nearing the end of life. “Given the complex nature of changes that can happen during this time, the need for self-care is important to help maintain one’s sense of well-being,” says Diana Li, executive director of the Burnaby Hospice Society. The workshop, called Nurturing the Caregiver, is on Feb. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Confederation Centre, at 4585 Albert St., just behind Lougheed Town Centre. Clarissa Green, a registered clinical counsellor, is leading the session, which will focus on the complex-
ity of end-of-life relationship changes and how friends and family can support each other while caring for themselves as well. For more information or to RSVP, contact Erin O’Neill at 604-520-5024 or e-mail eoneill.bhospice@ telus.net.

When he’s not seeing patients or swimming laps in the wee hours of the morning, our very own health columnist, Dr. Davidicus Wong, is blogging about how to live a healthy, happy life. Visit his blog at davidicuswong. wordpress.com. His musings are often inspired by his patients, young and old, and his postings focus on personal development, coping with loss, emotions, happiness and meditation. So far, the postings are articles that run in our paper, but Dr. Wong plans to add items that won’t be published in the newspaper. He also wants to start encouraging readers to share anything they find helpful with their friends,
families and co-workers who don’t use the Internet. “It would be great if we can all do our part to spread happiness in our communities. That would be the healthiest viral epidemic,” he wrote in a note to the NOW. Dr. Wong has also developed an approach to meditating using seven questions and seven mantras. He plans to walk the reader through the steps in upcoming columns so keep an eye on our paper and his blog. He also runs an Internet radio show, Positive Potential Medicine at positivepoten tialmedicine.pwrnradio. com, and he’s started recording a series on meditation. Dr. Wong is a physician at the PrimeCare Medical Centre in Burnaby. Firefighters earn kudos Mosque holds health fair for fundraising efforts After decades of begging with boots in the streets, Burnaby firefighters are getting some recognition for their work helping the B.C. and Yukon branch of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Burnaby Firefighters received the Bill Grindlay department of the year award for their ongoing support of the organization. According to Burnaby firefighter Rob Lamoureux, local firefighters have hit the $1 million mark in fundraising for the cause since 1958. They hold annual “boot drives,” where they collect donations in the street with empty boots as their receptacles.
The Bill Grindlay award is named after a retired Burnaby firefighter who was happy to hear the news. “It’s a proud moment for me,” said Grindlay. “I was so excited to find out Burnaby was winning it.” According to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Grindlay has supported the organization since 1968. In 1974, he became the Muscular Dystrophy Canada chair for the Burnaby Fire Department, and, in 1975, he was elected to the organization’s national board of directors, where he served for 17 years. – Jennifer Moreau
Burnaby’s mosque is hosting a health fair this Sunday, and local residents are invited, regardless of faith. The free fair runs on Feb. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 5060 Canada Way. There will be information on diabetes, with pharmacists and a nurse available to answer questions.
People can also get information on preventing falls, Alzheimer’s, poison control, osteoporosis and First Aid. To entice people to attend, the organizers are offering a free lunch and snacks. The Burnaby branch of the B.C. Muslim Association and the Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims were also involved in the event.
Project planned for Royal Oak which would be residential – and a communal lobby, as well as an entertainment room. Rezoning for the site is going to first reading on Feb. 7 and to public hearing on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the council chamber at city hall, 4949 Canada Way. – Janaya Fuller-Evans

Black people first came to B.C. via Esquimalt in 1858, part of the wave of gold prospectors, according to Marilyn Moseley, honorary consul for Barbados in B.C. Despite making many contributions to society and being part of the fabric of B.C.’s history, however, they did not make it into the history books most of the time, she told Burnaby city council at Monday night’s meeting. “Their deeds received little recognition,” she said. “They were often omitted or forgotten outright.” Moseley was part of a delegation speaking to council prior to the mayor’s proclamation of Black History Month in Burnaby. Moseley presented a recently published dictionary of noted Barbadian-Canadians, titled Some Barbadian-Canadians, to council, as well. Moseley was joined by Maryann Pyne, past president of the Jamaican Canadian Cultural Association of B.C. Black History Month was originally started in 1926 by Carter Woodson as Negro History Week, to educate people about the background and achievements of AfricanAmericans. The month has been celebrated in Canada and the United States since 1976. There are a number of events throughout the Lower Mainland to celebrate Black History Month, many run by the Burnaby-based National Congress of Black Women Foundation. The foundation’s primary event is a concert, When the Spirit Moves, being held at Hycroft Manor in Vancouver on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $27 and are available through the foundation, at natbwf@telus.net or by calling 604-605-0124. A children and youth talent and fashion show, called Kick Back, is being held in Burnaby on Feb. 26. The show takes place at the Bonsor Recreation Centre from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children and $7 for adults. There is a youth symposium being held in New Westminster at Douglas College this Saturday. Contact Bernard Piprah at piprah.b@gmail.com.

Jeep has another winner
David Chao staff reporter
I
t’s been a long time since the original Jeep Grand Cherokee debuted in 1992. The 2011 model is easily the bestlooking Grand Cherokee to date. Designed for both on-road and offroad adventures, the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee pays tribute to its origins while adopting the car-like qualities we’ve come to love in crossovers. The result is an SUV that feels purpose-built for two completely different worlds – an impressive feat, to say the least.
Design
With a smoother and more aerodynamic exterior, the Grand Cherokee certainly has a crossover “feel” about it. Off-roading purists may be concerned about the use of a unibody platform, but Jeep is still amongst the best when it comes to developing allterrain trucks, and the Jeep Page 27

In June 1961 the company was started in the British American (B.A.) Oil Company Service Station, on the north west corner of Royal Oak and Imperial, which had 2 service bays and one gas pump island, run by a fellow by the name of Stu Taylor with Ron Crompton doing the mechanical work. In February 1962 Stu and Ron formed a company named Taylor & Crompton Automotive Ltd. For the next 3 years they worked to build the business up. At the end of that period there was an agreement reached for
Ed Crompton to purchase Stu Taylor’s shares. In 1965 the name was changed to Crompton Brothers Automotive Ltd. In the next couple of years B.A. Oil Company was bought out by Gulf Oil, and we became a Gulf Oil Service Station. Over the following 6 years the brothers worked some very long hours to form a productive business when low and behold, Gulf Oil and Royalite were purchased by Petro-Canada Oil. As the Oil Companies started to go to self serve and the Oil company leases got higher Crompton Brothers built their shop at 5186 Imperial and moved
into that building on April 1st. 1974. As the business continued to grow it was offered for sale in November 1990, and Crompton Brothers was purchased by Simon Chivers on April 1st. 1991. After 12 years Simon offered Crompton Brothers Ltd. for sale and, was purchased by Riaz Noorani on March 1st. of 2003. Mr. Noorani has been very successful in maintaining the tradition established in 1961 of customer service, integrity, as well as respecting old school values that this company was built on! R.W. In-cabin storage space is reasonable, but there’s room for improvement. The glove box is decent, but the centre console and map pockets are on the small side. That said, the rear cargo space is huge,
with sides that slope outward to maximize volume and split-folding rear seats that provide a flat floor.

Superb design; thoughtful interior; confident driving characteristics.

The Grand Cherokee will take you wherever you want to go in style.

Lakers get better with top drafts Tom Berridge sports editor
To no one’s surprise the Burnaby Lakers took Coquitlam Adanacs junior Matt Beers No. 1 overall at Western Lacrosse Association draft Tuesday night. The 6-3 200-pound fouryear junior will bolster the Lakers back end already strengthened by the acquisition of transition runner Pete McFetridge in an earlier trade with the New WestminsterSalmonbellies that brought Burnaby the third pick overall as well. With that pick, Burnaby selected 6-3 righthander Colton Clark from Nanaimo. He finished the season with the New Westminster junior Salmonbellies and was arguably their best player in the Minto Cup. Beers is already in his second season of pro with the defending National Lacrosse League champion Washington Stealth. Clark led the junior Salmonbellies in scoring at the Minto Cup. He also posted 23 points, including eight goals in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoffs. Picked up at the trade deadline from Nanaimo

The ball stops here: The Burnaby Lakers got a solid goalie in Minto Cup star Dan Lewis at Tuesday’s Western Lacrosse Association junior entry draft.
last season, Clark scored 122 goals and 278 points in his three-year Jr. A career that also included three earlier years as an intermediate callup which first began in 2005. With their third pick,
the Lakers got 6-5 righty Scott Jones from Port Coquitlam via the Delta Islanders with the sixth pick of the first round. Jones tallied 102 goals and more than 240 points in a prolific three-year junior
A career. Burnaby was also fortunate to pick up goalie Dan Lewis, who many considered the MVP of last season’s Minto Cup, with the first pick of the third round.
“I’m happy. We filled some of the needs of the team, for sure,” said Burnaby head coach Bob Johnston. “McFetridge and the trade turned into Draft Page 32
New West wheels and deals with 2013 in mind Tom Berridge sports editor
The New Westminster Salmonbellies got the player they wanted and a whole lot more at the Western Lacrosse Association junior entry draft Tuesday. The senior A ‘Bellies selected four-year runner Eric Lewthwaite with the last pick of the second round after pulling off the coup of
the draft earlier in the round. New Westminster gambled with its first pick of the draft, the third pick of the second round, trading it to the Nanaimo Timbermen along with the 17th and 22nd picks, and a secondrounder in 2012 in exchange for the T-Men’s first and third picks in 2013. “It was a weird draft. But honestly, we are over the moon
getting Eric Lewthwaite. He can play,” said New Westminster president and general manager Dan Richardson. Lewthwaite played just one game in 2010 before ending the season with a knee injury. His best season was in 2009, when he scored 31 goals and 55 points, finishing behind the likes of top teammates Kevin Crowley, Curtis Dickson and Tyler Digby in team
scoring. But the real steal of the night was the trade with Nanaimo, said Richardson. “It sets us up for 2013, which we consider a very deep draft. … “It’s called succession planning,” Richardson added. “The potential of (Tyler) Digby and (Robert) Church was too good to pass up. We want to prepare our team for what we want to be.”
Players on the Canadian women’s soccer team are planning to boycott future matches, possibly even World Cup fixtures, unless the Canadian Soccer Association and head coach Carolina Morace can settle their dispute over the future of the program. Morace submitted a letter to the CSA last Friday indicating her intention to resign after the World Cup concludes in Germany in July, citing differences in philosophy with the governing body. Team Canada captain Christine Sinclair of Burnaby said the players are backing their coach – the team voted unanimously Monday to walk out on any upcoming games in support of Morace – and are demanding the CSA try to smooth things over with Morace so she will stay with the team long-term. “It’s come to a point where we can’t go on any further,” Sinclair said in a phone interview Monday. The players intend to be in Rome to prepare for the Cyprus Cup in March. However, if a deal is not in place with Morace before their first game March 2, the boycott will commence.

Bulldogs bounce Hyacks, steal second place The Byrne Creek Bulldogs earned a firstround playoff bye following a 67-53 win over the New Westminster Hyacks at Pearson Gym Wednesday. The Bulldogs put together four sound periods, including a pivotal 17-2 second quarter that proved the difference in the game. New Westminster played its best in the opening 10 minutes, leading 2215 after the first quarter. But the second quarter was a complete turnaround. Byrne Creek spread out its scoring and shut out the Hyacks for nearly the entire period. Michael Heer managed the only bucket of the period for the home Hyacks with just 34 seconds remaining in the first half. “We played so well in the first quarter, maybe we thought we could take the second quarter off,” joked Hyacks coach John Doughty. But second place in the BurWest is no joke with No. 1-ranked Burnaby South favoured to win the district banner. “It’s always a stretch in our conference,” said Byrne Creek head coach Wayne Best, who outlined his strategy for success is “play hard, execute and stay with it. That’s how we’ve improved over the last little while.” Grade 11 wing Kennedy George led all scorers with 21 points, including 11 in the opening quarter for Byrne Creek. Junior forward David Majstorovic chipped in with 12 points for the Bulldogs. Masood Wali had a team-high 18 points, including four three-pointers for the Hyacks. Hasreet Sidhu and Jordan Zeer also hit for double figures. Last weekend, the Bulldogs scored their first tournament win, avenging a 30-plus point defeat to Fleetwood Park last month, with a 78-50 victory over the Fraser Valley team at
the Sa-Hali tournament final in Kamloops. Senior district playdowns will be hosted at New Westminster Secondary on Feb. 15. Winners advance against South and Byrne Creek in the semifinals hosted at South on Feb. 16. The championship final will take place the following Friday. In the prior junior boys’ game at Pearson, Byrne Creek upset the first-place Hyack juniors 60-58 on a last-second bucket by Wilson Anteros. “It’s a big deal,” said Anteros, who led the Bulldogs with 18 points. “The coach said it was one of the biggest games we
would be playing.” Trailing 58-53 in the final minute of play, the ’Dogs scratched to within a point and then Anteros stole a pass before getting the ball back and banking a close-in shot off the glass with a fade-away jumper with 2.5 seconds left on the clock. The loss did not sit well with the New Westminster coach. “I guarantee no team will ever beat us twice,” said Hyack coach Dwight Stephen. Manvir Gandham led all scorers with 22 points. Junior boys’ playoffs will be hosted at Alpha Secondary Feb. 14, 15 and 17.

Steelers make early playoff statement Tom Berridge

The Grandview Steelers gave notice that they won’t be an easy playoff opponent. The Burnaby-based Steelers came back from a three-goal deficit to upset the second-place Delta Ice Hawks 4-3 in Ladner Tuesday. Rookie Robert Wilkinson sparked the four-goal rally, scoring his 13th goal of the season a minute after Konrad Sander had potted his second of the game for Delta. Trade deadline acquisition Mike Phillipson followed with a goal five minutes later. Kyle Golz, a former 17-year-old Western Hockey Leaguer, knotted the score in the final halfminute of the pivotal middle frame. Jeffrey Coi of Burnaby scored the game-winning counter midway through the final period. Cody Rowand and Burnaby rookie Matteo Belmonte assisted on Coi’s winner. The win catapulted Grandview into sole possession of third place in the Tom Shaw conference,
a point ahead of the North Delta Devils. “I think we finally decided to play three periods,” said Steelers head coach Aldo Bruno. “It’s definitely a good message to send for sure.” Last Sunday, the Junior B Steelers edged the Mission Icebreakers 5-4 at the Burnaby Winter Club. Game stars Nicholas Gushue and Golz both scored two goals and one assist apiece to lead the Grandview club. Grandview jumped out to a 4-1 lead, outshooting Mission 20-7 in the opening period. Golz got the game-winning tally midway through the second period with his 13th goal of the season. Trailing 5-1, Mission replaced its starting goaltender with Lukas Simpson, who blanked the home side the rest of the way. The Icebreakers outscored the Steelers 3-0 the rest of the way. Grandview is at the Sungod Arena on Saturday for a matchup against North Delta. The Steelers are back at BWC on Sunday for a return tilt against Delta. Game time is 4 p.m.

On the attack: Burnaby Bruins Ethan Bolhuis, centre, with teammate Braydon Graham in support, pulls away from a fallen New Westminster skater in a Hockey 4 matchup last weekend.
AHL rookie centre Mark Olver earned a thirdstar nod in the Lake Erie Monsters’ 5-4 loss to San Antonio Rampage on Feb. 5. Olver scored his 21st goal of the season and moved into top spot among first-year players with an additional two assists in the game. The Burnaby Minor product currently has 36 total points in 50 games, placing him among the top 35 skaters in the league.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Canadians off to good cup start The Burnaby Girls Canadians got off to a great start in Metro Womens Soccer League Cup play last weekend. Burnaby scored a 20 victory over Coquitlam Metro-Ford Xtreme in their first-round league Cup match at Burnaby North Turf last Sunday. The second-place Canadians avenged an earlier loss to the Xtreme in league play, stifling the Coquitlam forwards with a solid game plan. Sarah Boulton got the Canadians on the board just before half time, finishing off a great run that split the Xtreme centrebacks and beating the keeper with a shot to the far post.
Team captain Amy Bobb got the insurance tally 10 minutes from full time, chesting down a crossed ball and casually slotting home Burnaby’s second tally of the game. Burnaby will play Langley in its second league cup round-robin match on Sunday. Only two teams advance to the cup semifinals, with the first-place-finishing club crossing over to meet the runner-up from the other pool, which includes Surrey United, Westside, North Shore and North Coquitlam. The North Shore side defeated the Canadians 31 in last season’s premier league Cup final.
Premier men Cast away Two Burnaby Lake Rugby Club sides came away with wins this weekend, but the premier XV is still looking for its first win in the spring qualification league following a 27-12 loss to the Castaway-Wanderers on Vancouver Island last Saturday. The first team beat C-W 26-10, while the thirds handed Ridge Meadows a 44-17 paddling. Burnaby’s next game is Feb. 19 against Capilano.

Burnaby battle:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was named the Canadian Hockey League’s player of the week on Tuesday. The second-year Red Deer Rebels centre collected 12 points, including five goals, in three Western Hockey League games last week. Nugent-Hopkins led the Rebels to a pair of wins in the past week, earning a first star mention in both games, including an 8-1 victory over Moose Jaw last Friday when he posted his second career hat trick.
Cliff Avenue defeated the South Burnaby Spitfires and Ryan Hirakida, centre, 1-0 in under-17 gold youth soccer last weekend. Jason Lang/ burnaby now

Coquitlam back-up keeper Chris Seidel was taken fourth overall by the Maple Ridge Burrards. Robbie Campbell was selected by the senior Adanacs with the fifth pick. The Nanaimo Timbermen took Delta lefty Carlton Schuss seventh. Burnaby next chose Orangeville native Jon Thomson with its first pick of the sixth round. The Lakers went off the board with their next

pick, taking New Westminster junior B Andrew Polinghorne. They got 64 Brandon Gains from Delta in the eighth round. “We’re bigger, faster and better,” said Johnston. But snagging Lewis was a key selection, he added. “We’ve added six really top-notch players coming into the lineup. It couldn’t have been better if it had fallen for us.” “I like the looks of our team. I hope to play a more open style. That’s what I want to play. … I want to get those long, lanky guys down the floor.” The Lakers passed on Burnaby native left-hand sniper Riley Loewen.

Brent Laurita of Burnaby was picked up by Coquitlam in the fifth round, while Nick Benevoli and Ross Dougan, went in the sixth round to Langley and Nanaimo, respectively. Jordan Jarvis was an eighthround pick of the Timbermen. Kyle Kari went in the final 11th round to Langley.

CAREER COACH
Freedom from Fear in Uncertain Times
As a counsellor and coach I hear a lot about peoples’ fears for the security of their job or business, for their retirement, and generally for their future. I find that the people with the most fear are the people who believe they have the little control over the circumstance of their lives. And while I Gregg Taylor recognize that we may not have ‘control’ over as many life influences as we’d like, we can focus on those things we can most influence. Personal Choice: We cannot control the people around us, let alone the entire economy. What we can control are our own actions, emotions and decisions, choosing to be proactive rather than passive when times get tough. It’s how I choose to respond, and how I choose to act, that matters most. Understanding: Much fear comes from fearing the worst and not understanding the changes that are impacting us. We don’t have to become an economist or a career expert, but you will want to ask questions and learn all you can about your finances, your local economy, your employer’s stability, and your career alternatives and options. Support: We live in a society where independence and self-sufficiency are highly valued. This isn’t helpful in times of change. Don’t isolate yourself in doubts and fears – reach out, ask for help, get advice, be curious, and help others that are having a harder time than you are. Purpose: The people who survive change most successfully are those who are able to hold on to a bigger picture, or higher purpose - one that guides them and motivates them through challenging times. What is your purpose; career satisfaction and advancement, supporting your family, contributing to the world? For help finding the work you love, call Transitions Career & Business Consultants, coordinators of The Transitions Program, a free 3 week career exploration program available to all unemployed people at 604-434-1177 or 604-681-2774.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Mysteries continue, for one more week. Seek the truth beneath appearances. Dig deep. (Someone acts sweet but can’t or won’t do what they seem to promise. Applies all week.) Rest, plan and meditate Sunday. Visit a psychic, pastor or other counsellor. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge Monday/Tuesday. Monday holds refusals despite your luck, but you might vault over them. Tuesday favours you, especially in two areas: friendship, and depths. (So again, dig deep.) Chase money or a sensual bond Wednesday (good) and Thursday (goals might be elusive). Talk, travel Friday/ Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships are accented, but don’t fall in love or propose this week. (Don’t worry – if such seems imminent, there’s still lots of time.) Wishes come true Sunday – happiness, friends, light romance and popularity paint your future with golden strokes! But retreat this night through Tuesday: you need a short but deep rest: seek quietude, plan, contemplate. You’ll spy the inner workings of love Tuesday. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge upward Wednesday/Thursday – strike early Wednesday, in legal, travel, intellectual areas. Chase and conserve money Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last week of work – Friday begins a month of fresh breezes, exciting meetings, new horizons and opportunities. (Opportunities are unusually important this winter/ spring – seizing them can change your life.) Until Friday afternoon, complete chores, especially the obligations that “show up” Wednesday/Thursday – if neglected they will weigh you down later, just when you should be rising. Earlier, chase practical and prestige goals Sunday – success accompanies the ambitious! Wishes, optimism and social joys mark Monday/Tuesday. All week, DON’T begin a new love.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Travel, call during an active, friendly Sunday. But this night, settle into home – and there, through Monday/Tuesday, tackle some difficult questions around relationships, marriage and life’s opportunities. (Are there any left for you? Yes, many, but they’re all connected to ambition, career, until late 2012.) Tuesday’s better; a “secret” friend or stranger might help. Romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty whisk you to adventure midweek! (Don’t start a love relationship this week, though. It’s doomed long term.) Plunge into chores Friday/Saturday. Chase fun, friends, all week. Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent lies on ambition, career, dealings with VIPs, bosses and parents. Take a quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Confidential discussions, private planning, quietly lining up allies, contacting/applying to government or institutions – all these contain a quiet but lucky “change.” Chase money or shop Sunday, but NOT for techie items. Monday (barriers) and Tuesday (success) bring errands, communications, paperwork, details. Midweek accents home, and a choice between ambition and relaxation. Romance calls Friday/ Saturday. All week, avoid over-exertion, physical and intellectual. Gemini May 21-June 20: DON’T fall in love, propose, or chase a new romance this week. You’ve started to achieve success in group and social situations – and this will continue for four months of solid, heart-warming growth. If you’re single, this might well yield a new love. But not this week. You shine Sunday: start new projects, ask favours, show your talents. Your intuition is superb, so just do, rather than over-think. Quit by suppertime. Money, purchases and possessions fill Monday (barriers, waste) and Tuesday (success – buy high-tech). Communicate, travel midweek. Home, rest Friday/Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The romantic theme continues, but DO NOT begin a love affair or new relationship this week. Other themes, creativity, speculation, beauty, pleasure and teaching, are fine. Generally, you are (or your subconscious is) putting on the brakes a bit in all these areas, preparing for a subsequent surge. Sunday’s splendid – intellectual, travel, love and communication projects succeed. Exercise your ambitions Monday (dilemmas of choice) and Tuesday (success via creative effort). Social delights, flirtations, wish fulfillment arrive midweek! Retreat Friday/Saturday: plan the work that looms. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your “hibernation” period continues, so rest deeply – until Friday, when a month of romance, pleasure, speculation, risk and adventure starts! Neither make nor accept any partnership proposals this week (nor persuasive pitches for commitment of any kind). Sunday offers superb financial, investment, research, diagnostic and intimate opportunities. Sit down with a loved one for a deep, exploratory talk. Gentle wisdom enters Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious mid-week, especially first thing Wednesday morning. (Avoid selfdeception.) Friday/Saturday bring social delights and bright optimism! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: If a new wish or life goal comes to you this week, don’t invest a lot of faith in it; your destiny is very likely going to detour around this one. Sunday’s filled with opportunities (or opposition if you push others too hard) – exciting meetings or openings “synch” with your intuition. It’s a good time to answer “yes” on a whim. Life’s depths and mysteries rise to the surface Monday/Tuesday: DON’T invest, commit, nor seek intimacy Monday – Tuesday, these succeed. Gentle love, understanding, cultural stuff Wednesday/Thursday. Friday begins a month of domestic matters.
Call: 1-866-871-1040
Feb. 13 - Feb. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Continue to seek money, new clients, to buy and sell, until Friday.Your personality has grown more gracious and alluring the past week or so, and this helps you with ambitions this week. You’re slowly changing, and slowly but seriously climbing, carving out a new “position” this decade. Tackle chores Sunday – you accomplish much! Relationships contain opportunity and opposition Monday, but success and good feelings Tuesday. Finances, investigation, intimacy, lifestyle choices are blessed Wednesday, “iffy” Thursday. Wisdom, gentle love come Friday/ Saturday. A busy month begins. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Yourenergy,effectiveness and charisma continue at a peak...sexual magnetism drips from you too. (Hmm, not sure of that image.) You might attract amorous attention, but DON’T begin a love affair now (nor ever with anyone you first meet this week). Sunday’s romantic, creative, pleasurable and beautiful – you’ll win at games or love! Tackle chores Monday (results uncertain) and Tuesday (good results). Relationships, opportunities, exciting meetings fill Wednesday (lucky morning!) and Thursday (be diplomatic, not evasive). Friday’s financial, and begins a month of money efforts. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Continue to lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Refresh your spirit. Friday begins a month of fresh energy, rising charisma and effectiveness – but rest until then. Sunday’s splendid at home or in nature – a great day to enhance your security, deal with family members, garden, etc. Romance, creativity and beauty touch you lightly Monday/Tuesday, but the best that comes from this is friendship. It’s not quite time, Pisces. Tackle chores and health concerns Wednesday/Thursday. Wednesday morning’s efforts can open a lucky career door. Exciting meetings, opportunities occur Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
