When a cat or dog goes missing, most pet owners canvass the neighbourhood, put up posters, check in with animal rescue groups and maybe put up a posting on Facebook or Craig’s List. One local couple, however, decided to go the extra mile when their one-yearold grey female tabby, Luna, recently went AWOL from their home near the intersection of Canada Way and Imperial Street. More specifically, they went an extra 500 or so miles in order to bring in Harry Oakes, a professional tracker from Longview, Washington who uses trained search dogs, to help locate their missing kitty. “He’s done search and rescue professionally for about 40 years,” said Robin Hoare, a clothierwhodesigns custom business Luna is missing suits. “We brought him in maybe five days after she went missing as kind of like a last resort.” Oakes, one of the only private search and rescue experts in North America, literally has a highly impressive track record and claims on his website – www.k9sardog.com – to have a 95 per cent success rate when it comes to finding lost or stolen pets, with 20 per cent found during the initial search and the remainder located later after owners know where precisely to post missing pet signs. You couldn’t ask for a happier ending. Last Sunday, someone stole equipment from Burnaby’s Special Olympics floor hockey team, just days before a major championship. Most of the Burnaby Hawks’ equipment – roughly $3,000 worth – was taken from one of the coach’s cars, while he was parked outside a church. As soon as the team’s plight aired on Monday’s evening news, the donations started pouring in. “We were overwhelmed with phone calls and e-mails from people wanting to donate money or equipment,” said Burnaby resident Sara Foss, a volunteer with Special Olympics. “They said things like, ‘I can’t believe someone would do this in a church parking lot.’ They were

For over 30 years, Burnaby entrepreneur Brian Bonney has been quietly and, sometimes, not so quietly, the man behind the scenes in provincial and city conservative politics. But after five years of advocacy work with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Bonney has returned to the private sector and is again beating the political drum. Bonney became enamoured with politics when, at 17, he found himself owning his first business and with that, a new group of friends in the “free enterprise” Burnaby Voters’ Association (BVA). Bonney stuck with the BVA and took on the role of managing election sign distribution and gradually spread his interests with volunteer positions in the Social Credit Party of B.C. and the federal Progressive Conservatives. Bonney stepped up his responsibility in the BVA and somewhat promoted himself from sign duty to mediator in the late 1980s, when a group calling themselves the Burnaby Voters’ Non-Partisan Association (NPA) split from BVA. The split was instigated by Harry Bloy, now a Burnaby Liberal MLA. Bonney and some other party volunteers set out to unify the party. “We all felt strongly that a split wasn’t going to serve the interests of free enterprise and that we needed to bring the two organizations together,” he said. “There was one campaign where the NPA actually ran a slate, and it proved us to be correct that basically the two organizations splitting that free enterprise vote was ineffective.” After the dust had settled and the business vote had been unified, Bonney and

a force in right-leaning politics in the city and province since becoming involved with the Burnaby Voters’ Association as a teenager. other BVA volunteers started laying the groundwork for a new political force or “team,” if you will, in Burnaby politics. “I helped with a group of about 20 people that spawned TEAM Burnaby, and that’s really what brings us to recent politics in Burnaby,” he said. Bonney later went on to start two telecommunications businesses with Bloy and

ran Bloy’s first provincial election campaign, which led to five years of working as the director of operations for the B.C. Liberal party. Since leaving the Canadian Federation of Independent Business to take on the job of director of sales at New Westminster’s Uniserve, Bonney has again found himself in demand.

“The phone is ringing off the hook with people wanting me to come and help them out – from all the camps, (Mike) De Jong’s, Kevin Falcon’s, (George) Abbott’s and Christy Clark’s,” he said. Bonney then e-mailed all 2,000 of his personal contacts and started making calls. “What I looked for was somebody that could keep the legacy that Gordon Campbell started, which was using tax reduction as a stimulus to get our economy going. Everything I do in life is about driving our economy in B.C. – being the best in Canada, best in the world so that our children can stay in B.C. to earn a living and live here,” Bonney said. As for the next municipal election, now just eight months away, Bonney said he will be sitting this one out, despite having been approached by many who would like to see change.

“To give Derek Corrigan and his team some credit, they’ve run Burnaby pretty good,” Bonney said, but quickly added that he first gives credit to former BVA councillor Vic Stusiak for designing many of the fiscal policies that Burnaby continues to use. Meanwhile, Bonney said his new job and family commitments mean he doesn’t want to take on more activism – especially when he has no faith in the current “free enterprise” slate in Burnaby. “We need a fresh new start in Burnaby. I think we need a brand new team, and I don’t know where that’s going to come from. I don’t see a viable alternative right now,” he said. “And until that happens, I don’t want to split my energies.” He said as long as the Burnaby Citizens’ Association remain “good caretakers,” for the city, he doesn’t see change coming. Ultimately, Bonney said he would like to see a council that has both “free enterprise” and “socialist union” views present. “That’s what really gives us good governance,” he said. brichter@burnabynow.com

“I looked in the camera, and said, ‘I’m going to get the gold for you guys,’” he recounted. “I still can’t believe it.” He’s also in much better spirits about the upcoming championship. “I feel really, really good,” Chadha said. “Ever since what happened, I was more nervous. And when people helped out, I’m comforted now. I’m so happy. I’m going to get the gold for them. I had a dream yesterday that we won the championship and got the gold. It was the best dream ever. … Good things happen now.” One of the volunteer coaches, Ken Endo, was also impressed by the donations.

“I thought that was phenomenal,” he said. “To see people in the community and individuals come forward and help our program – overwhelming is not really the word – it’s just fantastic. It really gave me faith in mankind – that there’s good people out there.” The championships are on Friday and Saturday at UBC. “I personally feel we’ve already won, and no one can take that away from the athletes,” Endo said. Heritage B.C. should have its funding and support reinstated by the provincial government, Burnaby council agreed unanimously Monday night. Council voted to send letters to the premier, the minister for tourism, trade and investment, and Burnaby’s four MLAs in support of Heritage B.C., a provincial non-profit umbrella organization that serves community-based heritage groups. The city’s community heritage commission received a letter from the president of Heritage B.C.’s board of directors, Larry Foster, about the lack of funding. “It’s another example of a contract broken by this government,” Coun. Paul McDonell said of the funding cuts. “I think it’s disgraceful that nobody’s up in arms about this.” Coun. Sav Dhaliwal pointed out that while a city as large as Burnaby does not use funds from Heritage B.C. for restoration of heritage properties, smaller communities throughout B.C. rely on the organization

to help preserve history. Heritage B.C. had its funding request to the provincial government denied in 2009, as well as a gaming grant application. The nonprofit had to cease operations for three months, according to the community heritage commission’s report. Heritage B.C. received half of its usual gaming grant money for 2010, the organization’s executive director, Rick Goodacre, said in an interview. “We had operating funding every year for 20 years,” he said. “Now it’s gone completely.” To survive, Heritage B.C. is using money from the Heritage Legacy Fund, established with $5 million in funding from the province in 2005, to cover its operating budget. The fund pays out 3.5 per cent of funds in its account, the annual interest from the fund, through the Vancouver Foundation. That’s down from five

per cent in better times, Goodacre said. Using the funding this way cuts into the grants the legacy fund can dispense, Goodacre pointed out. If funding by the government is not reinstated, Heritage B.C. cannot continue its work, Goodacre said. “We’re looking at, basically, Heritage B.C. shutting down,” he said. “I see things coming to a halt as far as we’re concerned.” The ministry sent an email in response to questions from the NOW. Karen Johnson, communications director for the ministry, did not directly respond to questions and said that budget questions couldn’t be answered before the B.C. budget was introduced on Wednesday. The province has invested $17 million in operating, preserving and improving provincially owned heritage sites, she said. The government has put $4 million towards retraining and employing 127 dis-

subject to human frailties. The recent problems, however, point to more than a few isolated errors; they suggest a serious systemic flaw. The review being undertaken by the health ministry is intended to help to explain what went wrong. To do that effectively, it must extend beyond the particulars of these individual cases – and perhaps even beyond the field of radiology. If someone can get a job

interpreting CT scans without the proper credentials, is it not possible underqualified individuals have slipped through the cracks in other areas? The review should consider whether the College of Physicians and Surgeons – which oversees doctors’ qualifications – has adequate safeguards in place across the board. It is no exaggeration to say our lives depend on their conclusions.

Siksay has worked tirelessly to ensure that transgendered folks gain human rights protections that they currently don’t have access to. In that editorial, we also urged senators to make Siksay’s bill the law of the land. Frankly, being the ever-cynical editor, I doubt if this bill will make it to law, but I hope it does. Some readers disagreed with our editorial. That’s expected. After all, it is an opinion, and people have different opinions. And, again, not surprisingly, the objections to the editorial and support for human rights protections for transgendered people highlighted our society’s abysmal confusion where all things gender-related or sexual are concerned. And, it’s no wonder. From the moment we’re conceived, we’re bombarded with rigid gender stereotypes. Thankfully, during the last 50plus years, we’ve managed to gain some wriggle room around gender stereotypes – but just

try having a man in a skirt walk down a busy street, and you’ll get a quick lesson in just how easily people can be thrown for a loop. When the vast majority of us see something that doesn’t fit with what we have come to expect – it makes us stop and look, possibly even think. And, hopefully, even question our assumptions. But for some folks, things that don’t fit with their preconceived ideas are quickly put in the “wrong” file. And, that’s just not right. I’m no sexologist, but if someone believes that they’re stuck with the wrong gender and they’re not making a snap decision about the change – then I’m thinking it’s their identity, their body and their right. And, if they do make that rather large change in their life, then they shouldn’t have to endure discrimination while they’re making that transformation. Simplistic? You bet. But I think it is that simple. Arguments about transgendered folks going into women’s bathrooms when they’re still – how can we say this – holding men’s equipment, is baloney. People undergoing such seismic change in their lives aren’t out to shock folks in washrooms – they’re just trying to manage. So, let them. As for arguments that

I just walked around Deer Lake for the first time since the city decided to desecrate the natural setting in the area of Shadbolt Centre (not my favorite architecture). The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP), which conducts the Early Development Instrument kindergarten survey, links its data banks with Pop Data B.C. That organization’s website states B.C. has “one of the world’s largest collections” of private records. It states that it has private records “on B.C.’s four million residents, in many cases from 1985 onwards.” Not even “passive consent” is being obtained for this. The EDI letter to parents is signed by HELP’s director, Clyde Hertzman, who is also on the board of Pop Data B.C. HELP documents state that in 2004 HELP obtained “ministerial signatures” to allow data linkage and had already linked the personal education numbers and personal medical numbers of “97 per cent of school age children.” Which ministers’ signatures were those? What is our government up to? Where is the Opposition? The bigger issue is that the B.C. government is allowing and funding this violation of parents’ and children’s consent rights regarding the EDI and everyone’s privacy rights. B.C. has the only government in Canada that is allowing the creation of such a vast data-bank on its residents. If B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act allows this (doubtful), that is alarming, not reassuring. Statistics Canada required written parental consent when teachers filled in surveys about students.

Re: recent coverage about Alice Jongerden’s challenge to the raw milk law. Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall maintains that unpasteurized milk is dangerous. Last year he pronounced that there were “many many many many instances of people getting sick from drinking raw milk” as though those cases had happened in British Columbia. He’s changed his tune after I put in a Freedom of Information request for such records, and the Health Ministry couldn’t come up with even one. Now he points to it having caused serious outbreaks of illness in other jurisdictions. The smear campaign against our dairy, perpetrated last year by Dr. Kendall and ventriloquist dummies from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, was a madefor-newsmedia production, alleging that the crackdown and testing was triggered when an 18-month-old child who consumed raw milk from Home on the Range dairy suffered gastrointestinal illness and that a lab test had shown raw milk from our dairy was unfit for human consumption because the bacteria counts were so high. Had there been one iota of real evidence indicating our milk had harmed someone, it certainly would have been entered when Fraser Health went to court for an order to shut us down. But it wasn’t … because what they alleged never actually happened. They never told the whole truth – i.e. that the samples of raw milk they’d seized had been handled contrary to the law. They bungled the task, stipulated in the Milk Industry Act Standards Regulation. Thus, the lab results purported were so badly skewed they’re irrelevant.

The amount may seem like a lot, although Hoare pointed out that vet bills can easily be that high. The couple still have Luna’s brother, Bear, and Hoare said they hope the other cat will come back.

There’s also an added sentimental reason for them to not give up hope. “We figure they were both born on the day that I proposed to my wife,” said

Pursuing a passion for opera Julie MacLellan staff reporter

Arianna Sovernigo admits with a laugh that her relationship with opera didn’t get off to an auspicious start. Which is to say, she fell asleep at the first opera she ever attended. It was a high school class trip to see Rigoletto, and, well, she wasn’t enthralled. She didn’t become enthralled with opera for quite some time, in fact. She really wanted to be a musical theatre performer, but she got talked into studying opera instead. “I was told I couldn’t dance and my voice wasn’t very musical-theatre-like,” she explains. It wasn’t until her third year of college – she has her bachelor of music degree in opera performance from the Vancouver Academy of Music – that she discovered she really liked opera. “Now I love it!” she declares, and her eyes dance. The same enthusiasm is mirrored in the face of Chloé Hurst, who nods emphatically in agreement. The two took time out to meet up with the NOW at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts to talk about their upcoming roles in Burnaby Lyric Opera’s Don Giovanni. Mozart’s masterpiece opens at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on Feb. 26. The Burnaby sopranos have two lead roles: Sovernigo appears as Donna Anna, while Hurst is Zerlina. Those familiar with the story will know that Donna Anna is the victim of a rape (or attempted rape, depending on your reading of the script) in the opening scene. “From there it’s just vengeance. It’s all she seeks,” Sovernigo says, adding it’s a meaty part for a performer. “There’s a lot of drama in this role.” At the other end of the spectrum is Hurst’s Zerlina, who’s about to be married. “When Zerlina first appears, it’s the first happy moment in the opera,” Hurst says with a laugh. “It’s her wedding day, everything is very cheerful, very exciting.” Of course, opera being what it is, that doesn’t last long. What happens when Don Giovanni shows up and attempts to work his womanizing magic on Zerlina is, of course, another twist in the admittedly complex plot. Hurst has worked with Burnaby Lyric Opera before – she’s sung in its concert series – but she’s excited to be appearing in her first mainstage role. As with Sovernigo, being an opera singer wasn’t her original life goal. She was in a couple of operas as a child, as part of the Vancouver

Opera Children’s Chorus, but it wasn’t a focus for her. She studied piano all her life and was considering pursuing her career in that direction. Then, in her Grade 12 year at Notre Dame Secondary, she had a chance to play Maria in the school’s production of West Side Story. Her father, who’s a musician, came up to her afterwards and asked her: “Have you ever thought of singing?” “I had never taken a voice lesson in my life,” she says with a laugh. So she went to a summer music program at the University of British Columbia to give it a try. “All of a sudden my eyes were open to this totally new world,” she says. Nancy Hermiston, who directs the opera program at UBC, was leading the summer program and took Hurst under her wing. Before she knew it, Hurst found herself singing for a chance to get into the opera program. “It all happened very fast,” Hurst notes. It was that summer, before she started her first year at UBC, that she started taking voice lessons – she’s still studying with Heather Thomson-Price. Hurst now has both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from

For both singers, Burnaby Lyric Opera has been a big dooropener. “It’s a place for people who are starting their careers to get opportunities,” Sovernigo says, noting it also gives a chance for those who are in mid-career to take on bigger roles than they might be able to elsewhere. “They’re really open to helping people, they’re really nurturing,” she says. Hurst adds it’s a good opportunity for young singers to expand their repertoire, particularly with the Burnaby Lyric Opera concert series, which offers highlights from various operas four times a year. “It puts another role on your resumé,” she points out. “You can always learn a role, but you get to perform it too.” Right now, they’re both focused primarily on preparing for Don Giovanni. Rehearsals were set to start on Valentine’s Day – which Sovernigo notes means learning the part on your own, coming with several different ideas of your character, and being prepared to “get moved about on stage.” “It’s a lot of fun,” she says with a grin. “It’s very intense, which is good.”

Fighting the stigma of mental illness HERE & NOW

FU is working on a new strategy to fight stigma surrounding mental illness, following new statistics that show up to 86 per cent of mentally ill students don’t complete their degrees. The university’s new mental health strategy is also encouraging people to be compassionate to those struggling with a mental illness. According to a 2007 study, 65 per cent of SFU students said they were overwhelmed and feeling depressed. Another 39.4 per cent were so depressed they had trouble functioning. The new plan, spearheaded by SFU’s health and counselling services, involves things like updating policies, raising awareness about mental illness on campus, training volunteers to recognize signs that someone may be at risk of suicide, and striking a subcommittee to fight the stigmatization of mental illness on campus.

Money for festivals

If you’re planning a local festival, there’s a chance to get your hands on some money at an upcoming information session on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The City of Burnaby has set aside $250,000 to

The National Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre is hosting a workshop for those interested in tracing their family roots all the way back to Japan. The facilitators are Ted Ohashi, Moe Yesaki and Linda Reid. Baking soda does more than just deodorize fridges.

Katherine Duncan is getting more girls interested in metal and wood working at Burnaby North Secondary. Last year, the woodshop teacher introduced a new class called Creative Wood and Metal to draw more female students into the shop. “I’d usually only get two or three girls in a woodworking class, so I developed a class with projects to get girls hooked. We make vases, jewelry boxes, pendants, silver rings, a glass locket. We use wood,

metal, glass and sometimes fabric to make projects the girls want,” she wrote in a note to the NOW. And her efforts have proven successful. “(I) was elated to find out that 60 students had enrolled by the end of last year. There was even a waiting list to get into the class.” Of those 60, Duncan estimates 50 are girls. Besides the new course, Duncan has also done a lot of work, with the help of her students, to reorganize the woodshop at Burnaby North.

New prez jumped at the opportunity Theresa McManus EDMONDS EXPRESS Ryan Meadows is wasting little time in trying to contribute to the Edmonds Business and Community Association. The association’s goal is to improve business and community conditions and activities in the Edmonds area. It holds monthly meetings, networking events and seminars, and sponsor events such as Clean Sweep and the Santa Claus Parade. Meadows, a financial advisor with the CIBC branch at 7170 Kingsway, arrived at the Burnaby branch in March 2010. Less than a year later, he assumed reins as the association’s president. “The bank is always involved in the community,” he said. “We spend more time at work than we do at home. I picture this as my community too.” Meadows is no stranger to volunteer work, having volunteered for the YMCA and the Rotary club in Aldergrove in the past. Branch manager Natalie De La Cruz is also involved in the association. “When I came here I was looking

for an association of some kind,” said Meadows, who previously worked at the CIBC branch in Aldergrove. One of Meadows’ goals is to increase membership in the Edmonds Business and Community Association. “The association has been around for 10 years. I believe there are 30 active members,” he said. “It is one of these things that has a lot of potential.” As his one-year anniversary at the local branch approaches, Meadows is pleased with his new location. “I came out here because there is a lot more opportunity. Coming to the Highgate area, it’s almost like I’m in Vancouver,” he said. “I always knew I was going to come to this side of the bridge. Opportunity came so I jumped at it.” The Edmonds Business and Community Association includes representation from businesses, community groups, faith groups, the City of Burnaby, RCMP, firefighters and more. One of the group’s current endeavours is planning for Clean Sweep, which will take place in the spring.

Library is booming Theresa McManus EDMONDS EXPRESS The Tommy Douglas Library has exceeded expectations in its first year of operation. The library, located at 7311 Kingsway, opened in November 2009. The library houses various collections, provides Internet access at 34 terminals, hosts much-loved StoryTime sessions, offers various programming in conjunction with other community groups and more. “It has done everything they thought it would and more,” said branch manager Roberta Summersgill. “We had to order more furniture because more people were coming in.”

The new library has also seen an increase in the amount of programming taking place and an increase in the number of library cards being taken out. The Tommy Douglas Library replaced the Kingsway branch that had been built in 1962. “Definitely it’s a gorgeous new building. We are not cramped anymore,” Summersgill said about the former location. “It had been there for 40 years.” The Burnaby Public Library is reviewing the collections offered at all of its branches and deciding where expansions are needed. The science of singing Science meets art in the next concert event by the Vancouver Cantata Singers. The choir – led by Burnaby’s Eric Hannan – is presenting Cathedrals of Science, a concert for choir and orchestra, in the atrium of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre. It’s happening on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. The centre’s wrap-around ramp gives the choir a chance to offer up a “surround sound” concert, together with the Cantata Players Chamber Orchestra. The concert will feature the Te Deum for orchestra and choir by Arvo Part, along with work by the great Renaissance com-

poser Antoine Brumel. Also included will be the world premiere of a new work by Jordan Nobles of Vancouver, commissioned by the choir with support from the B.C. Six years later, Audi A6 is still a solid choice David Chao

t’s been six years since the third-generation Audi A6 arrived on the scene, and a lot has changed since then – both with the A6 and its competition. Once the fresh face in the crowd, the A6 is now one of the longest-lived cars in its class, and that’s how things will stay until the new 2012 version arrives next year. But the thing is, there’s really nothing wrong with that; in fact, there’s quite a lot that’s right about the current A6. While the 5-Series and E-Class were redesigned this past year, Audi has continued to tweak and improve upon a vehicle that works very well. You don’t buy an Audi to get the flashiest vehicle or the best-handling sedan on the road – you buy it for its amazing design, value, and, above all else, balance. And if that’s the case, the six-year-old A6 remains an excellent choice. Whether you’re looking at the sedan or the Avant wagon, the A6 offers a high-quality, feature-laden package that won’t disappoint.

Design

The A6’s styling begins with the trapezoidal front fascia, which was heavily debated when it first replaced the slim, rectangular grilles of past Audis. It turned out to be a great move for Audi, creating a

distinctive look and feel. With logical proportions and good posture, the A6 sedan has “practical” written all over it. That’s even more the case with the Avant, a true wagon body style with a tall roof and a long rear end. Audi really does some of the best interiors in the business, creating cars that are welcoming, comfortable and logical.

Performance

Available engines include a supercharged 3.0L V6 with 300-hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 4.2L V8 with 350-hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Both are attached to a six-speed automatic and Audi’s fantastic quattro all-wheel-drive system. The V6 is an excellent engine that’s more than sufficient for the A6’s purposes – especially considering that the V8 gives up fuel efficiency while barely improving on the sedan’s acceleration. Handling is a strong point of the A6. It’s not the best car to drive by any means, but it remains responsive and predictable. Perhaps the only knock is the slightly artificial feeling common to Audi steering systems.

Environment

Thanks to its upright cabin and long body, the A6 provides lots of interior space and can easily fit four adults. Some might find the front seats a bit flat and firm in the

Vaulter wins gold at Games Burnaby gymnast Briannah Tsang won the individual gold in the vault at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax Thursday. Tsang, who won a silver medal in artistic gymnastics in the team competition earlier in the week, scored 14.450 points on the apparatus to win B.C.’s eighth gold medal at the Games. Provincial teammate Emma Sibson of West Vancouver joined Tsang on

the podium, finishing third in the individual vault with a 13.850 score. Earlier, Tsang won the vault in the all-around competition held Tuesday, where she placed seventh overall. Later Thursday, Tsang also won a bronze medal in the individual floor exercises after posting a 14.200 score. It was the 15-year-old Burnaby North student’s third medal of the Canada Winter Games.

Matt Duchene’s pain could be American Hockey League callup Mark Olver’s gain. The 23-year-old Burnaby centre was recalled from the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL to the NHL Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Duchene, the Avalanche’s leading scorer with 21 goals and 47 points, will be sidelined indefinitely with a hand injury suffered in Colorado’s 9-1 defeat against the Calgary Flames Monday. Olver was called up earlier by Colorado in October, posting a pair of assists in four league games. At the time of the recall, Olver was leading all AHL rookie scorers with 21 goals and 36 points. Olver is also coming off a productive January where he scored nine goals in a 10-game span for the Monsters. The Northern Michigan University grad had an outstanding NCAA Division I career, posting 122 points, including 56 goals. Olver was a fifth-round pick of the Avalanche in 2008. Olver was held pointless and was a minus-two in Colorado’s 3-2 loss against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Avs have failed to win a game in February and have lost their last nine starts, slipping to secondlast in the Western conference, currently 11 points shy of a playoff spot.

The two top high school boys’ basketball teams in the Burnaby/New Westminster district played off for No. 1 seeding on Friday. The games were played after NOW deadlines. On Wednesday, the league runnerup Byrne Creek Bulldogs slipped past the New Westminster Hyacks 71-56, but only after three tightly played quarters. “I think they wore us out a bit,” said New Westminster coach John Doughty after the game. “I think definitely in the fourth quarter they were stronger than us.” Byrne Creek pulled away in the final period, outscoring the Hyacks 22-9 in the final 10 minutes of play. Junior forward David Majstorovic was a big part of the Bulldogs’ fourth-period success, scoring eight of his 16 points in the final frame. With Byrne Creek holding on to a precarious 49-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Paul Mallari stroked a sweet three-pointer to start the pivotal final period.

That seemed to settle the Bulldogs down in a game that was anything but cool, calm and collected. Both teams struggled with their shooting and also failed to capitalize on their chances at the foul line. Byrne Creek made just 13-of-23 free throws, while New West was 12-of-21 at the charity stripe. Majstorovic went on a mini six-point run midway through the final quarter, pushing Byrne Creek’s lead to 15 points. “Our coach just told us to play a little harder. We knew what was at stake,” said the second-year first-teamer. “When we got that lead, we calmed down a little bit and just ran our plays. We just had to play tight and keep playing as a team.” Bulldog guard Kennedy George led all scorers with 17 points. Byrne Creek also got three key threepointers, two coming in a difficult third quarter for the Bulldogs, from junior guard Glen Morgan. Anthony Baker and Hasreet Sidhu shared the high scoring for the Hyacks, hitting 14 points apiece. Burnaby South won its semifinal game against Burnaby Central 102-43.

The Douglas College Royals lived up to great expectations at the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association provincial badminton championships. The defending national collegiate women moved on without dropping a single set in team and individual play, helping Douglas win a sixth straight provincial team title on Saturday at the David Lam campus in Coquitlam. On Sunday, Canadian Colleges’ female player of the year and defending two-time national singles champion RuiLin Huang made short work of the competition in the qualifying round. Huang won all four of her singles matches, without giving up more than five points in any of the games played. However, Huang is not expected to have as easy a time at the nationals, hosted this year at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. Huang will be up against an old nemesis from China, Sun Yang, now playing for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. The two have met five times in the past, with Huang winning on four separate occasions. Huang will also be up against former junior Olympian Tracy Wong from Ontario. Melody Liang and Stephanie Ko teamed up for a fourth provincial women’s doubles title together. Liang has won five straight doubles crowns, dating back to 2007. The Douglas men’s team of Darren Hong and Rey Luo will go to the nationals as the No. 2 doubles seed. The badminton nationals will take place from March 3 to 5.

The Grandview Steelers need just one point in their lasttwoPacificInternational Junior Hockey League regular season games to lock up third place. Finishing third would pit the Steelers against the Delta Ice Hawks in the first round of the Tom Shaw conference playoffs. It is a matchup the junior B Steelers are looking forward to. The Steelers defeated the Ice Hawks 4-2 at home on Sunday. The win was

the third in a row since January against the secondplace Delta club. If the playoffs began today, Grandview and Delta would butt heads in the conference semifinals. Last season, Grandview had a favourable season record against the Richmond Sockeyes, but were swept from the playoffs in the opening round in four straight games against the Sea Island club. This time around, Steelers head coach Aldo Bruno has had his players on the ice every second night to ensure there is no

repeat of last season. Team captain Curtis Rocchetti led Grandview to its latest win against Delta, earning the games’ first star with a three-point game. Rocchetti tallied backto-back markers between the first and second periods, including the eventual game-winner from Marko Gordic and Robert Wilkinson midway through the middle frame. Grandview will close out its league season against the first-place Richmond Sockeyes at the Burnaby Winter Club Sunday. Game time is 4 p.m.

Major midget Giants extend lead The Northwest Giants put a five-point cushion between them and the next closest team in B.C. major midget hockey. The Giants swept the North Island Silvertips in last weekend’s series, downing the eighth-place club 3-2 on Feb. 12 and 5-1 on the following Sunday.
