Riding the rails to help save youth
L
ike many commuters, Natalie Harper boards the SkyTrain each morning, but for her, riding the train is her job. On a blustery afternoon, Harper and two colleagues – Greg MacCluskey and Chris Preston – board the westbound train at Production Way station. They wear black jackets, with the word “outreach” down the sleeve, toques pulled over their ears, and backpacks filled with items to help troubled teens – snacks, juice, toques, gloves, socks, ON MY BEAT resource guides, a list Jennifer Moreau of shelters, a first aid kit and condoms. The trio is part of I-RAYL – Inter Regional At-Risk Youth Link, an awardwinning group of youth outreach workers who “ride the rails” looking for lost and troubled teens. “We’re looking for those youth who are loitering, kind of looking for something that’s happening,” Harper says. I-RAYL helps kids, 19 and under, who are dealing with poverty, family problems, homelessness, mental illnesses and addiction. They may have dropped out of school or are trading sex for basic needs or drug habits. I-RAYL often connects the kids to other groups that help; like the Youth Hub and St. Leonard’s in Burnaby or the Purpose Society in New Westminster. The train hums along the Millennium Line, and the group gets off at Gilmore station. “The first thing we do is check out the platform,” Harper says. They are looking for kids left that don’t seem to be going any place in particular. Then they descend the escalator. “When we come down to the street level of the station, we look around,” Harper says. “We check out the bus loops.” There are five I-RAYL workers in total. They start their day in the New Westminster office of Pacific Community Resources, the organization the runs the

“I feel like I have my life back. I am able to be more active … and life is much much more enjoyable.” Lyle B., a LaserHealth™ Solutions patient
Laser Therapy has proven to be a fast and effective solution for a wide variety of soft tissue injuries, including whiplash, tendonitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tears, ankle and knee sprains, sciatica, tennis and golfer’s elbow.
Stop Pain With Laser Therapy Laser Therapy uses a cold laser that gets absorbed by soft tissue.
M
aria was taking pain medication for pain in her left elbow. The soreness kept her up at nights and prevented her from driving or even holding a cup of tea. But after only five Laser Therapy treatments, she stopped taking all medication. By her tenth session, she was back to normal. Maria’s story is not unusual for LaserHealth® Solutions, which provides Laser Therapy treatment in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. Laser Therapy has proven to be a fast and effective solution to a wide variety of soft tissue injuries, including whiplash, tendonitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, ankle and knee sprains, sciatica, and tennis and golfer’s elbow. This form of treatment doesn’t mask the pain of an injury. Rather,
it treats the injury directly by activating biochemical energy and accelerating the healing process. Laser Therapy works directly at the cellular level to help resolve inflammation quickly. The effectiveness of Laser Therapy varies from patient to patient, but after just a few weeks of treatment most patients report they are pain-free and have returned to their regular activities. Ben K. injured his back in 1993 while helping a friend move a large desk down a flight of stairs. He sought treatment from his family doctor and other specialists, but nothing helped eradicate the pain. When he first heard about Laser Therapy he was skeptical, he said: “The notion of lasers blasting away my pain seemed unreal.” But after a few treatments of Laser Therapy, the pain had disappeared. Ben admits he’s not sure of how Laser Therapy works, “I just know it worked for me!”
So, how does Laser Therapy work? Skin, muscles, cartilage, ligaments and tendons absorb the red and infrared light. This stimulates cells, increasing their metabolism and regenerating healthy tissue. Laser Therapy provides cells with more energy, resulting in the resolution of inflammation, reduced scar tissue formation, increased lymphatic drainage and improved vascular circulation. This is a non-invasive treatment, as there are no needles used in this treatment. As well, because this is Cold Laser technology, there is no cutting or burning. The treatment is backed up by scientific research. Over 2,500 research studies that have been conducted on Laser Therapy. World-renowned cellular biologist Dr. Mary Dyson has extensively published papers related to Laser Therapy research. She’s found that cells can increase their repair rate six to eight times when
exposed to specific wavelengths of light. Many professional athletes benefit from treatments at LaserHealth® Solutions. “I’ve never seen anything turn around that fast before in my life,” related B.C. Lions player Paul McCallum. “I was quite happy. The trainer was quite surprised at the speed of the recovery. I would recommend the therapy to anybody that suffers a soft tissue injury.” Maria and Ben’s stories are among the nearly 500 patient testimonials listed on the company’s website, www.laserhealth.ca The site also includes video demonstrations of patients receiving treatment and a more comprehensive explanation of Laser Therapy. To find out if Laser Therapy is right for you, call the Burnaby clinic at 604-293-2273 to book a consultation and assessment.

AT CITY HALL
Employees get kidneys screened Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
If your employer wants to check your internal organs, some employees might balk at the offer. But City of Burnaby employees were eager to be part of a special kidney screening on Tuesday at city hall. The employees received targeted screenings from the Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C., to kick off Kidney Health Month. The in-depth screenings were given to 44 employees. “It was very successful,” said Heather Johnson, director of programs for the foundation’s B.C. branch. The screenings were given to employees who were specifically at risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Risk factors include people who are more than 55 years old and have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, or an Asian, Aboriginal, African or Indo Canadian background. “The new targeted screening program easily and quickly lets people at risk for kidney disease know their current level of kidney function,” Johnson said in a press release. “Because early detection of chronic kidney disease is key to helping prevent or delay total kidney failure, the program will help at-risk people take control of their kidney health and in many cases, avoid the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant.” The targeted screening involves seven tests: blood pres-

The foundation purchased a StatSensor device that can generate these last two results within 30 seconds from a drop of blood. Registered nurses were hired to conduct all tests and to spend time with each participant to explain their individual tests results. Johnson spoke with people who were at the screening, and said she was told it was a good use of their time. “They all really know they fall into the risk category
now,” she said. The screening took place Tuesday at city council chambers at city hall. During Kidney Health Month, volunteers will be canvassing door-to-door to raise money for kidney research, patient services, public education and increase awareness of the need for organ donors. The B.C. branch of the foundation has set a fundraising goal of $450,000. March 10 is World Kidney Day. teens, they figure out if they are at-risk by talking to them and analyzing non-verbal cues. They also keep an eye out for older people who may be hanging out with vulnerable kids for the wrong reasons, and they alert the police if necessary. The workers meet about 800 to 1,000 youth each month or about 30 to 50 kids a day. They’ve built relationships with a lot of the youth, so they can sometimes spot missing teens. For example, they recently got a call about a teenager who hadn’t been home in four days, and they spotted him on the SkyTrain that night. “We made sure he was OK. People were quite worried about him. He said he was going home that night,” MacCluskey recalls. “We have a very good ongoing relationship with this kid.” The I-RAYL program started as a crime prevention pilot project in 2008, but secured ongoing Ministry of Children and Family Development funding last November. The initiative caught the eye of B.C.’s watch-

dog for children and youth, Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, who presented an excellence award to I-RAYL for innovative services. The work I-RAYL does sometimes goes beyond helping youth. The workers are trained and equipped to deliver first aid, so if there is an emergency on the SkyTrain, they can be the first to respond. In fact, a couple of the workers were also awarded for helping an assault victim on the SkyTrain. Harper loves her job because it’s never the same day twice. “It’s definitely not your conventional office job,” she says, adding it’s the only program of its kind in Canada. “Youth today are very transient along the SkyTrain system,” Harper says. “(They) fall through the cracks because they’re not rooted in one community. I like to think we provide a bit of filler for that gap.” For more on I-RAYL, see Jennifer Moreau’s blog, Community Conversations, at www.burnabynow.com.

Resident wants city to extend smoking ban to include all shopping mall property in Burnaby Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Doug Porter is upset that city council has passed responsibility for extending the smoking ban outside of malls on to the provincial government. “Why even bother?” Porter said, regarding his attempt to go to the city for a solution. “It’s not going to make a difference.” The Burnaby resident wrote a letter to the mayor and council last winter, asking that smoking be banned on all mall property in Burnaby. “Three metres’ distance from building entrances often places smokers right beside bike racks where I inhale their smoke while loading my bike and preparing to ride,” he wrote. “Personal health is one reason why I ride, and it is ironic that (using) my bike for shopping errands places me directly in the path of an extremely hazardous substance.” Burnaby council passed a motion recently to ask the provincial government to review various non-smoking bylaws and introduce uniform standard regulations throughout the province. “I wasn’t expecting them to go to the province,” Porter said in a phone interview before the meeting.

trying to change the way government and law enforcement systems have handled marginalized women for decades. There have been some successes. At one time, sex trade workers would not even have expected police officers to take their complaints seriously. And we realize that expecting a justice system to be impervious to society’s general attitude is probably an unrealistic expectation. Our systems, our institutions and the folks who work in them reflect how our society judges
people. And if we, as a society, feel that poor, addicted women working in the sex trade do not deserve equal and respectful treatment, then chances are pretty good that our police officers, our prosecutors and our politicians will follow suit. Will any commission change that? Probably not, but at least it may raise awareness and, hopefully, give voice to those who feel their voices have not been heard. And that cannot hurt.

This will be two weeks running! In support of her aspirations, I too have certain features and characteristics (or aberrations) that I am unhappy with and would like changed in order to be better accepted by my peers. For instance, my facial features are less than I would desire. I would like my nose shortened, as well as my ears, and there are certain other “accoutrements” that I would like enlarged, but (and this is perfectly understandable) I do not expect the larger

I can also vouch that the editor’s opinion is not, as Jessica attests, offensive. For instance, I know for a fact that she suppressed at least one letter that might have been considered … well, offensive. There may well have been others. I would suggest to Jessica, that it being just a cartoon, she get over it! I know, too, that said cartoonist has on numerous occasions offended the adherents of a religious ethic that numbers in the hundreds of millions and has been around for at least 2,000 years, and of which I What’s Page 7

Understandably, Jessica may not want big shoulders, but you know what I am getting at. Jessica would likely get more sympathy from the likes of Debra Sutherland, school counsellor for Burnaby North Secondary (Big plans for helping gay youth, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 26) and other social engineering types who think it necessary to force their viewpoints on others. While her methods are somewhat crude, her intent is well meant. But you see, I find it “offensive” that these people think it acceptable to force me to pay for others abortions and even others’ sex-change operations, etc. In other words, Jessica; tell someone who cares. Frivolous ‘bullying’ cry undermines the real issue
Dear Editor:
I wholeheartedly agree with the editorial, Don’t forget why Pink Shirt Day was born (Our View, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 26). To see the anti-bullying campaign used on the front page of the Burnaby NOW in such a frivolous manner is insulting. The anti-bullying campaign is meant to bring awareness to the stories of children, teens and adults who have horrific stories of being bullied because of their beliefs, sexual orientation or appearance. It was meant to bring to light how bullying can drive some teens to commit suicide and how we as a society can stop this by speaking out against bullying. It was not meant to be used to give awareness to a small group of people who simply do not want to follow rules and by laws of a non-profit volunteer organization. The Burnaby NOW should be ashamed to allow such a feature on the cover of their newspaper. I am sure a reporter does not have to go far to find someone with a true anti-bullying story, maybe just down to the local high school. Pam Nevett, by e-mail
Burnaby Horsemen’s club has been a huge benefit Dear Editor:
Re: Infighting plagues horse group, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 26. I have been going to the Burnaby Horsemen’s Association barns everyday for 34 years. Because of Burnaby’s generosity, I was
will be a:
given the wonderful opportunity to grow up at this amazing facility. My own children have also been so fortunate to have been given the same opportunity that I had, as well as learning responsibility and how to follow rules and work in a cooperative environment. I have been involved with the barn committee for years, many Christmas open houses, endless work parties, bylaw and other committees, as well as many fundraising efforts to enhance our wonderful facility. I find it so incredibly disturbing that Alice Arnold, Neil Paterson, Amber Price, Helene Littmann, Laurie Brant and the Bradner family would go to the city as well as the media for something so trivial as not wanting to lower the height of Alice’s hog fuel paddock to the expected standard. With the help of my two children, I dug out two paddocks to lower them to club standard a few years ago. From years of adding hog fuel, the paddocks had become too high, and we lowered them. We just knew without question that it was the right thing to do. If we lived in a co-op housing development, we wouldn’t be able to have a black front door if the strata standard was white, now would we? We have a democratically elected board of directors who volunteer hours and hours of their own time, and I am so appreciative of all they do to keep this amazing association on track and running smoothly for all of us to enjoy. Please understand that these few disgruntled members do not in any way speak for the rest of us. I do know, however, that I can speak for so many that look forward to the soft nicker of their horse when they walk through that gate into our own “little piece of heaven.” Janice, Melissa and Spencer Jackson

Dear Editor:
Re: Private schools at the top, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 9. Come on, people! Private schools are at the top of the Fraser Institute’s school rankings because the Fraser Institute wants them to be there. The whole purpose of the Fraser Institute is to undermine public services and promote privatization. The school rankings are such an obvious example. They are so blatantly biased against public schools and toward private schools it ought to be embarrassing. No self-respecting academic would endorse their methods or their results, and the media should be a little more critical in their analysis of such overt propaganda.

Burnaby Board of Trade president bids adieu Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Darlene Gering, president and chief executive officer of the Burnaby Board of Trade for the past six years, is leaving the position this spring. She has been the personality and the force behind the board’s recent foray into social development in the business sector, so it is no surprise that is her future focus, as well. “I’ve realized I’m very passionate about social innovation,” she said in a phone interview Thursday. “I would love to focus on creating projects to actually engage businesses directly in solving social issues.” She pointed to the board’s Breaking Down the Barriers program – helping new immigrants integrate into the business commu-

Scam resurfaces in city An old scam is rearing its head again. The Burnaby RCMP issued a warning on Feb. 28 about the “emergency or grandparent scam,” a well-known telephone scam where a fraudster calls an unsuspecting victim posing as a relative who is either in jail or has been in a car accident. “The fraudster usually requests around $1,000 to $4,000 be sent via Western Union to Montreal to help get them out of trouble,” Burnaby RCMP
Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said in a press release. “The suspect hands the phone over to a ‘lawyer,’ who will provide instructions on the money transfer.” Between Jan. 20 and Feb. 16 this year, the Burnaby RCMP investigated eight such incidents, but none of the victims lost any money. the board full-time until April 8, when she will help the future CEO transition into the role. “I’m very committed to a smooth transition,” she said. Her daughter’s birthday is in mid-May, so she would ideally like to have May 12 as her last day, she added. Gering joined the board six years ago, after a career in the corporate sector in
Toronto, working in Costa Rica, and moving into the technology sector in Burnaby, where she’s lived since 2002. Odgers Berndtson, a global executive search group, has put out a posting for the CEO position. The job posting states the CEO is a business and community advocate for Burnaby, who must contribute to economic development initiatives and
“nurture relations and alliances with business and government stakeholders to ensure a sustainable future for the city.” The CEO candidates are advised that they must relate well to the board’s commercial nature and public policy mandate, and balance and integrate the two. The Burnaby Board of Trade celebrated its centennial this winter.

Syn-ful concert
S
ome Burnaby choral talent will be in the spotlight when the Laudate Singers presents Voices, Sax and Syn next weekend. The concert is set for Saturday, March 12 at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church in North Vancouver. The Voices, Sax and Syn concert continues the choir’s 16th season, with special guests joining the choir for a somewhat non-traditional choral journey. Soprano Heidi Ackermann, alto Intan Purnomo and tenor Paul Jungwirth are all from Burnaby, as is the choir’s manager, Linda Lysack. Jazz saxophonists Campbell Ryga and Ross Taggart and synthesizer player Tim Tsang will join the choir for an eclectic selection of work – from the Renaissance gems of Palestrina and Dufay to contemporary work by Kristopher Fulton, Robert Cornejo, Ryan Noakes, Taymaz Saba, Andrei Diaconu and Zulfikar Nathoo. “The rehearsals are infused with excitement as we experience how the old and new music stimulates our minds, senses and spirits in fresh ways,” said artistic director Lars Kaario in a press release. “Voices, Sax and Syn gives us – and our audience – a rich and unusually varied palette of musical textures and colours.” Tickets are $25 and $20, free for ages 17 and under. Call 604-7296814 or see www.laudatesingers. com.

Gallery walks on the wild side
They’re just wild about art at the Deer Lake Gallery – and you can be too. The Burnaby Arts Council gallery is holding an opening reception today (Saturday, March 5) for A Walk on the Wild Side, a show featuring artists Wendy Mould and Margaret Mah. Mould’s work explores images of nature – an eagle perched on a log; swans gathering in the lagoon, a raging river. Mah’s, on the other hand, offers up a contrasting picture to Mould’s natural world and its role in our life. Mould is a retired teacher living in Surrey who now devotes her time to a full-time art career. Mah is a recent graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design who’s currently focusing on painting and book media. You can meet them and check out their work at the reception on Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. On Saturday, March 26,

WHEELS Deals Kia Rondo is hard to classify, but easy to like David Chao and Bob McHugh NOW contributors
The Kia Rondo is a hard to classify vehicle, as it doesn’t quite fit snugly into any of the established categories. It’s obviously not a car, it’s too tall to be a conventional station wagon and not rugged enough to be an SUV. While compact on the out-
side, Rondo can seat up to seven inside, yet it doesn’t have sliding side doors like a minivan. Realistically, most buyers don’t care about generic labelling, as long as the Rondo fits their specific needs, expectations and price range. And the competitively priced and highly versatile Rondo certainly has broad potential appeal.
Pricing starts at just $19,995 for the base LX trim version. It comes with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder mated to a four-speed automatic. The four-cylinder also comes in an EX trim, with a/c and other stuff, starting at $22,795, lowest priced seven-passenger version is $23,795 and there’s a Premium version for $25,095. The changes for 2011 are
relatively minor. Externally they include a new front (tiger nose) grille, the roof rails change from black to a silver colour, and Rondo gets a chrome-tipped tailpipe. According to Kia, the highly functional Rondo’s seating can be arranged in 32 different configurations with the optional thirdrow seat.
Every Rondo comes with six airbags, four-wheel-disc brakes with an anti-lock system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and traction control. The bottom line: An innerspace surprise, the Kia Rondo is a tall, compact front-drive, five or seven-passenger vehicle with great utility and a very reasonable price tag.

Ray & Tom Magliozzi
S
Dear Tom and Ray: My husband and I had to go out of town for work for a few weeks, so we left our 14-year-old daughter with an 18-year-old girlfriend of hers whom we trust(ed). Well, the 18-year-old brought over her boyfriend, “Einstein,” without our knowledge. (There was a strict no-boys policy.) They decided to try to start our Ford E250 V-8 three-quarter-ton Econoline van, which has a dead external fuel pump. Not knowing that, and seeing that the gas gauge read “Empty” (since it doesn’t work either), they apparently assumed that it was out of gas. So Einstein took all the gas cans in the garage and dumped them into the van’s gas tank. Living in northern Michigan, we use a
variety of somewhat ancient tools, including lawn mowers, chain saws, snowblowers, etc. All of them use gas that is mixed with oil. Now we are wondering what to do. When we replace the fuel pump, do we just top off the tank and drive? Or will the gasoline mixed with oil damage the engine? This van has two tanks, and we have yet to talk with Einstein or said girlfriend. So Einstein may have put the gas-and-oil mixture in both tanks. Please feel free to laugh boisterously on our behalf, as long as you tell us whether we can drive the van. Thanks! – Theresa TOM: We have had a good laugh, but you’ll be fine, Theresa. RAY: When you mix oil into gasoline for a twocycle engine, it’s usually in the ratio of something like 40-to-1 or 50-to-1, gas to oil. So there’s only a small amount of oil in that gas to begin with. TOM: And I doubt there was enough fuel in those gas cans to fill up both of your van’s tanks. I mean,
even if Einstein poured 10 gallons of gas in there, the capacity is probably 30 gallons. So you’ll be able to dilute the oil even further with fresh gasoline. RAY: And of course he poured it into both tanks. Pouring it into the first tank didn’t get the van started (and I’m sure they were late getting to Burning Man for the week), so he tried pouring some in the other tank. TOM: Diluting the mixture is exactly what you should do. But even if you don’t, it won’t harm the engine. The oil will burn in the cylinders, so you’ll get some bluish-gray smoke coming out the tailpipe. But once the oil in the gas tank is gone, the smoke will disappear. And no permanent damage will be done. RAY: Except to your daughter’s social life – which I’m sure will be severely curtailed. Hyack young guns primed and loaded Tom Berridge sports editor
New Westminster’s young guns are loading up for another run at the B.C. AAA high school girls’ basketball championships. But the unranked Hyacks will have to do it with a roster of girls whose average age adds up to little more than a junioraged team. The Hyack girls are one of the most successful high school hoop programs in the province, with 26 topeight finishes, including three B.C. banners. But the last time New Westminster won a provincial title was back in 1994. The program suffered a setback in 2000 when a core group of players transferred to Brookswood and started a mini dynasty at the Langley school. Current head coach Doug Woodward stepped in to salvage the program and did it with youth. “We had to rebuild the program and one way we did it was to bring some of the Grade 9s to reboot the program, and we just carried on.” Woodward started with his daughter Krista and junior Mollie Stelmack, who together lifted New Westminster to three consecutive top-10 finishes, including fifth place in 2002 with a team that included seven Grade 11s, two juniors and a bantamaged Fiona Kayitesi. He has since earned nine berths as a coach of the Hyacks into the AAA provincials. This season, the seniorless New Westminster girls’ team made it to the provincials, with five Grade 11s, eight 10s and two even younger players, including juvenile starter

But the only way you can have that chance is to be one of the top four teams at the Lower Mainlands.” The Hyacks did just that, upsetting No. 12 Carson Graham in the championship semifinal last week, and then earning a provincial berth with a key victory over Point Grey in the consolation bracket. Grade 11 point guard Ariana Sider showed the way while earning a spot on the Lower Mainland all-star team. The somewhat-of-a-surprise win is not the first

That’s why we’ve done well with our leadership,” Woodward added. “Leadership quality has always been at the point guard position, and that’s what we need. “A lot of those teams we’ve had, shouldn’t have been there.”
Burnaby and New Westminster will be ringette central for the provincial club championships next week. Burnaby’s Bill Copeland Sports Centre and Burnaby Lake Arena will be the ground zero for the A provincials, while Royal City’s Queen’s Park and Moody Park arenas will handle most of the B and C championships from March 10 to 13. The Burnaby Winter Club will handle a bit of the overflow scheduling on the Saturday. As the host association, Burnaby/New Westminster will field teams in the under-14, -16, -19 and 18-plus teams in the A division. BurWest has perhaps its best chance for a medal at u-16A and 18-plusB. The teen team topped the A division regular season rankings, while the B team posted an impressive 10-11 record this season. Burnaby/New West has a good history at previous provincials. Last year, the Lower Mainland representative came second at u-16 and third at u-14 in the A division and first at u-19. In 2009, BNW won two gold at the 11-and-under petite and 15-and-over junior divisions. JUNIOR B HOCKEY
Early playoff exit again for Steelers Tom Berridge
sports editor
The Pacific International Junior Hockey League season ended a playoff too far again for the Grandview Steelers this week. The Burnaby-based junior B club exited its best-of-seven first-round playoff series in five games following a 4-2 defeat to the Delta Ice Hawks in Ladner Tuesday. The Steelers also dropped a 2-0 shutout to the Ice Hawks in Game 4 at the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday. Last season, the Steelers had an early exit in the first round, falling in four straight games to the Richmond Sockeyes.
SFU wrestler wins university athlete Sport B.C. award
“It’s too bad to have two of the top four teams in the league go out,” said Grandview head coach Aldo Bruno, referring also to the North Delta Devils, who were eliminated in straight games by the Sockeyes on the weekend. Kyle Golz, with a two-point night, and Robert Wilkinson did the goal scoring for the Steelers. Danny Merth chipped in with a pair of assists. The two hockey clubs split the regular season series, both winning two games and losing once on home ice. The Steelers closed the league season, winning its last three contests with the Ice Hawks. But ultimately it was the lack of goal scoring that cost Grandview the
series. Grandview’s only win of the series was a wild 7-1 affair in South Delta last Thursday. In the other four contests, the Steelers mustered a total of only six counters. Marko Gordic, with three goals and three assists, led Grandview in playoff scoring. Golz garnered five points, including a pair of markers. But the two players were the only Steelers featured among the league’s top 20 scorers in first-round play. “We’re definitely going to look for goal scoring to bring in (next year) for sure,” Bruno added. The Steelers expect to lose five players to graduation and possibly another five to the higher junior leagues next season.
Former Simon Fraser University heavyweight wrestler Arjan Bhullar was named the university athlete of the year by Sport B.C. last Thursday. Bhullar, a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games last year, also won an NAIA national championship title at 285 pounds. He won the award over Clan women’s basketball player Robyn Buna and University of B.C. volleyball player Liz Cordonier.

Knight girls lose Mainland AA hoop nailbiter Tom Berridge sports editor
The No. 5-ranked St. Thomas More Knights were upset at the Lower Mainland AA high school girls’ basketball championships. Playing without injured national team cadette forward Lexie Der, STM was eliminated 57-55 by eventual consolation winner Seycove. Senior Sarah Hughes scored 29 points and added seven rebounds and three steals in the semifinal contest. Junior post Kamila Wojciechowski added 19 points and 16 rebounds.
“It was definitely not how we envisioned the season unfolding,” said STM head coach Jen Farano. “We were literally two points away from going to the provincials.” With the loss of Der to a recent knee injury, Hughes and Wojciechowksi carried much of the scoring load for the Knights at the Lower Mainland championships. In four games, Hughes scored 110 points, while averaging almost five steals and nine rebounds a game. Wojciechowski recorded four straight doubledoubles at the Mainland tourney, scoring a total of
68 points and 69 assists, including 22 points and 22 boards in STM’s opening 74-44 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Top-ranked York House fell to No. 2 Britannia 81-71 in the championship final. York House trailed 17-4 in the early going, shooting just one of 20 from the floor to start, while the East Vancouver school was hot all game long, hitting on 58 per cent of its shots. Burnaby guard Alisha Roberts scored 35 points for York House in the final. The AA girls’ and boys’ provincials will be held in Kamloops from March 9 to 12.
RuiLin Huang of Burnaby was named the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association’s female badminton player of the year for a third straight time. The Douglas College star is undefeated in 45 games this season and has amassed a career record of 112 wins and just one loss.

W&D winners
The Burnaby North Rebels won the Vancouver and District junior boys’ basketball title. South defeated Richmond No. 1 McMath 59-53 in the V&D final. Martin Bogajev led the Rebels with 22 points. Nick Garcha chipped in 12 for the winners. South advanced to the B.C., beginning March 3.

in 2007 and petite C a year earlier. “It’s very exciting,” said association director of promotions Susanna Chow. “The whole experience has been positive. A lot of companies are positive about (helping children), even if it’s a small company giving us a $20 gift certificate. It all adds up.” The four-day tournament kicks off March 10 with early morning 7 a.m. starts
most days and runs all day. Final placement games start at the Copeland centre on March 13, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The B and C medal matches will be held at Queen’s Park Arena, starting at 2 p.m. The association has also been granted hosting rights for the Canadian ringette championships in 2012. “This is a just a stepping stone to something bigger,” Chow added.

Finn Berle Sept 6, 1943 - Feb 22, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Finn Berle. He is now with The Lord and re-united with his father and brothers. He died at home, comfortable and with loved ones by his side. Finn lived life to the full and succeeded in carving out his own destiny while, selflessly, being a rock for all those he loved. Friends and family will recall countless acts of generosity, insightful humour, poetry and musicianship. A celebration of Finn’s life will be held on Saturday, March 5th from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. (2516 136St, South Surrey). In lieu of flowers, donation to The BC Cancer Society or Fraser Health would be appreciated.

Russ Duncan 1925-2011
It is with tears and great memories we announce the passing of Russ Eve Duncan (nee Russell) who passed away on February 15th. Predeceased by husband John, brother Malcolm & Margarite, sister in law Margaret and niece Gail. Survived by brother Al (Torch); children Jim (Delee), Bruce (Kathleen) & Erin; grandchildren Eric, Spencer and John. Russ was born in North Vancouver. In 1932 the Russell family moved to Regina where they lived until Russ, in her early teens struck out on her own to Toronto. There in the 1940’s she worked for de Havilland building the Mosquito bomber. In 1945 Russ won the “Miss Models Model” contest, defeating over 3000 entrants. Her modeling career was launched and she moved to New York. It was there she discovered her lasting passion, dance. One of her regular dance partners was Ira Murray brother to the famous Arthur Murray. She returned to Vancouver as the house model for the Couture dept at the Hudson Bay Company where she met John. They married in 1954 and enjoyed all Vancouver’s blessings including water sports, skiing and camping. In 1956, they moved to Calgary, bought a restaurant and saw the birth of their sons, Jim and Bruce. They missed Vancouver, and came back for the birth of their daughter, Erin. Russ was involved with founding of the Sharks Swim Club, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and The United Church. Her real passion was the Dance Box which she started in 1972. She bought an old mail truck painted it hot pink, stocked it up and drove to dance studios across the lower mainland to fill the need for dance supplies. The Duncan TV room was changed into a store which overflowed to a shed, until the first “real” store on Austin Ave in Coquitlam was opened. The Langley store followed close behind, as she ran the business with her usual flair and spirit, while building a reputation as “the go to” person for Pointe Shoe fittings. She fit and took pictures of thousands of the ‘first pairs’. Russ’s first acting break came in her 70’s. She had parts in Cold Squad,Animal Miracles and many commercials. She was involved with the Cranberry Saucies Red Hat group which she loved, Russ was never one to miss wearing a fashionable (or not) chapeau. She golfed, white water rafted, snorkeled, made pottery, painted, swam, and loved to travel. Russ was a remarkable woman who lived her life to the fullest, right up to her very last days. She was a connoisseur of a good Martini and never missed a party. A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday April 17th 2011. Heartfelt thanks to Royal Columbian Hospital 5th floor South & North and Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers a dance scholarship fund will be set up in her name. Donations can be sent to the Dance Box with scholarship fund noted or go have a good Martini. As the follow spot fades she slowly turns and walks away. The final curtain has come down. Bravo

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your career will be unpredictable and exciting for the next eight years. You get a lucky start, for your career is very favoured until June. So use the few months ahead to expand business, to seek a promotion, to display your talents to higher-ups, etc. In the years ahead, your career will feature (or be subject to) these themes: investment, other people’s assets, detective work, research, private arrangements, lifestyle changes – changes in general – high tech, humanitarian or group-oriented activities. Short range: go forward March and May. Save April for “former things.” Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The past 15 years have nudged you toward gullibility that ended in mistrust. You might have been tempted by alcohol, other people’s money, sexual longings, secrecy, etc. Life has been dreamlike, watery – cotton batting, not steel. That ends this week (not entirely, such a long trend will take time to dissolve completely). From here on, for eight years, your mind grows clear, alert. This clarity will end your doubt and suspicion. For the first time in many years, you are cleared to find and wed your true mate. Travel, legal, intellectual, publishing activities will also benefit. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The past seven years have brought you clarity but stress in relationships. You’ve dealt with fascinating but unpredictable people, and your links have gone on and off like a light switch. That ends now: for eight years to come, this “unpredictability factor” will quiet down (but still exist in finances and sex). For 15 years, spirituality, depth, sometimes confusion but a growth-oriented confusion, enters relationships. If single, you are likely to fall in love in a completely different way. Investments, sexual desires begin to enter your thoughts midweek: act soon, not late March.
Foster homes urgently req’d for rescued, abandoned & neglected dogs. Many breeds. www. abetterlifedogrescue.com

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy rises nicely Sunday/Monday, and some gratifying luck comes your way (Sunday) – but use this energy to deal with governments, to fulfill your obligations, and/or to remove restrictions. The remainder of this week, slow down, retreat, rest and contemplate. One of the most important, exhilarating, freeing, friendly and futureoriented periods of your life begins this week, for an eight-year run. You’ll live more eccentrically, you’ll have little fear, and no patience with conventions. You’ll act unpredictably, and attract some oddballs! Chase money midweek. Errands, Friday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Popularity, optimism, entertainment, light romance and a general joie de vivre fill your days! But retreat briefly Sunday/ Monday: rest, contemplate, be charitable – plan future actions. Your energy and charisma surge Tuesday to Thursday – start important projects (better Wednesday dawn onward). You relate well to males now, whatever your own sex. Chase money Friday on. This day technically begins eight years in which your private life will grow more lively, and your career will benefit from background connections, government involvements, administration and management techniques. Gemini May 21-June 20: The general emphasis lies on career, reputation, dealings with authorities and VIPs, parents and bosses (all of whom might display impatience, temperament, but will quickly “forgive” if you’re sincere). Walk proud, but show eagerness to please. Start things, seek responsibility, ask for a chance to prove yourself! Happiness and optimism, social joys and entertainment “touch you” Sunday/Monday. Retreat to rest, contemplate and plan Tuesday-Thursday. Your energy, charisma and luck surge Friday/Saturday: flirt or achieve! Eight years of exhilarating social life begins this month.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Sunday/Monday, to some degree, show you what to expect in relationships for the three months ahead. This whole month shows you what is ending in work, and what is beginning in work and relationships, for years to come. OK, that’s cryptic. For the next eight years, relationships become true, loving, laughing, friendly, stressful, unpredictable. If single, you’ll likely find your true love – or one of them. For 15 years (technically starting early April) you’ll find your “true vocation.” It might be in film, charity, spirituality, pharmacology. Gentle love, late week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Tackle chores Sunday/ Monday. Fresh faces and opportunities arrive Tuesday to Thursday – love might be in the air! Large finances, secrets and sexual promptings stir you Thursday night to Saturday – be a little cautious, especially Friday night. Don’t take big risks. This week starts eight years of slightly erratic employment and health factors: your employment prospects will improve in any area associated with food or shelter; for good health, you’ll need to avoid stress. April begins 15 years of true love prospects – but they might come early, this week and next! Chase beauty, art. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re tired, in a wee hibernation mode until March 20 – pamper yourself, don’t overwork. Romance, charming kids, pleasure and creativity make Sunday/Monday interesting. Tackle chores midweek. Relationships are bittersweet (or affectionate and snarling) Friday/Saturday. Be diplomatic on the home front all March. Soon (April, technically, though it might have started even in 2010) a 15-year trend of “normalization” will enter your domestic sphere. You’ll find your true home. This Friday begins eight years of exciting, unexpected romantic, creative lightning bolts!

Mar. 6 - Mar. 12 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Communications, paperwork, details, errands, casual friends, short trips and curiosity fill this week and next. In the slowest, most gradual way, like water on blotting paper, this area of your life will grow for the next 15 years. At the same time (perhaps illogically) your worries about money and income will fade. You enter eight years of “home excitement” this week. This can have a negative effect, bringing more stress to the home (so relax, exercise, guard digestion) and a positive one: money made from property, food/shelter areas. A big new life! Midweek joy, romance. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Chase money this week and next. Don’t spend! A sea change is looming in your earnings area. For the next 15 years, your income will stabilize (despite your worries!) – in fact, you’ll hit the “central channel” of your life’s earnings trends. Your income will tend to expand in these (and similar areas): government, welfare, social work, hospitals, institutions, sympathy, film, pharmacology, assembly lines, interest rates, oceans, sea food, gas/oil, hydrology.... This week begins eight years of friendly meetings, travel, communications – love starts to become possible! Rest midweek. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: From this week onward, the tension, excitement, nervous energy and restlessness of the past seven years will fade, to be replaced by 15 years of expanding consciousness, more sleep, more dreams, expanding spirituality. Nuance, poetic feelings, indescribable, subtle joys will become your everyday companions. Others will be inexplicably drawn to you. Rely more on your intuition, less on logic. You’ll see beyond the petty things of life. You’ll begin to wonder if money and power might be the wrong goals. But chase money Sunday! Travel midweek. Soak up nature Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
