Massive SFU plan gets OK Rezoning bylaw allows UniverCity to start developing 1.2 million square feet of new homes Janaya Fuller-Evans
staff reporter
Burnaby council approved the rezoning of 12 parcels of land in the UniverCity development on Burnaby Mountain. The rezoning bylaw was the next necessary step in developing approximately 1.2 million square feet of residential density across in the area, according to UniverCity director Gordon Harris. “It is also the first bylaw in North America to include defined requirements for sustainability and energy use,” he said. Harris is president and CEO of the SFU Community Trust, which is in charge of overseeing the UniverCity project. UniverCity, near Simon Fraser University, is a mixed-use community with single- and multi-unit dwellings. It is designed to house up to 10,000 people. UniverCity began about six years ago, according to Harris, and currently houses about 3,000 people. The rezoning means development can begin on two new residences. Porte Development’s Origin project, which is designed to include 74 condos, will be located at University High Street and Tower Road. Mosaic Homes’ Nest project is the second development in the area, with Development Page 4

The camp is organized by youth, for youth, and is designed to promote leadership and environmental stewardship for kids aged 12 to 18. The parks are Pacific Spirit, Burnaby Lake, Tynehead and Capilano River.
Pay hikes get minister’s attention Janaya Fuller-Evans
staff reporter
Provincial ministers should not interfere in the pay rates of municipal politicians, according to Coun. Pietro Calendino. Calendino made the statement, arguing voters can determine for themselves whether or not to vote in politicians who have approved pay raises, following comments by Community and Rural
Development Minister Ben Stewart about Port Coquitlam’s recent council raises. Port Coquitlam council’s decision follows on the heels of recent pay raises for Burnaby’s mayor and councillors earlier this month. As for Port Coquitlam, Calendino said the municipality has a right to determine its own pay rates. “It’s their choice,” he said. Calendino thinks the minister should

worry about provincial rather than municipal pay rates. “The minister should look in his own backyard,” Calendino said. “Don’t interfere with municipalities. Leave the municipalities alone.” Stewart, who is in charge of B.C. municipalities, is reviewing whether or not Port Coquitlam’s increases are justified. Pay hike Page 5

Four murals to get grants
Burnaby is sporting four new murals, and Burnaby city council approved funding for the public artworks at Monday night’s meeting. Vancouver Brake and Tune, at 7313 Sixth St., approached the Edmonds Business and Community Association for a mural grant in June. The company submitted receipts totalling $4,000 and will receive $2,000 from the city for the project. The association also received applications in July for a mural at 7398 Edmonds St. and another at 7257 Kingsway. The Edmonds Street mural was awarded a $2,194 grant, while the Kingsway mural received $2,091.

$52.52 MILLION PROJECT
Edmonds pool is on the way
Sports car star: Mario Gil, 6, in front of the Lamborghini he got to ride in the spring. Mario has a rare blood disease that is similar to cancer.
Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
It won’t happen this year, but people in the Edmonds area will soon have their very own pool to beat the summer heat. Funding for the new Edmonds Pool and Community Centre was approved by city council at Monday night’s meeting. The project is estimated to cost $46 million plus HST, bringing it to $52.52 million. The Edmonds neighbourhood is one that really needed a new facility, according to parks, recreation and cultural services director Dave Ellenwood. “The neighbourhood is growing and rejuvenating,” he explained. “A need was identified in recreation studies for a new pool there.” The pool is only one-third of the new 90,000 square foot centre, which includes community space and a double gymnasium. It will be a six-lane, 25 metre lap pool, he said, with space for lessons and public use, as well as competitive swimming. There will also be a leisure pool, hot tub and sauna, according to a city staff report. The double gym will provide more space for badminton, basketball and floor hockey, Ellenwood said. “The gymnasium right now is quite small,” he said. “There is a critical need for dry floor space throughout the city.” A multipurpose area is also included in the plan, as well as space for childcare, studio space, a youth centre, martial arts, and space for seniors. A fitness room is also included. The new centre will be about double the size of the Bonsor Recreation Complex, he said. Bonsor currently has about 3,000 visits per day, and earns $1 million per year, from patrons, according to Ellenwood. It was the last community centre built in Burnaby, in the late ‘80s. “We haven’t built anything since then,” Ellenwood said. While there is a need for the new centre, Ellenwood said, there has not been a dramatic increase in use of Edmonds Page 4

Mario holding his own in battle Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
Mario Gil is doing a bit better with his battle against a rare white blood cell disease that’s somewhat similar to cancer. Mario, 6, was featured in the Burnaby NOW in March, after his soccer team, the Cliff Avenue United Football Club, arranged a surprise ride for him in a Lamborghini. Mario’s teammates, all about five years old, wanted to do something special because they knew he was sick. So with the guidance of coaches Joe Giovinazzo and Paul Mobilio and help from Lamborghini Vancouver, Mario, who’s absolutely crazy about cars, got a special ride in a Lamborghini. Mario has Langerhan’s cell histiocytosis, a rare cancer-like condition where excess white blood cells build up and attack parts
of the body. It can cause bone tumours, abdominal pain and growing problems, among other things. It can be debilitating, and in some cases life-threatening, but most people survive. The Histiocytosis Association of America estimates roughly nine in one million children under the age of 15 have histiocytosis. In a recent chat with his mom, Angela, the NOW learned Mario was doing better after a rough bout with chemo. “We finally got some good news. It’s actually working. He was just way more diseased than they initially anticipated,” Angela said. Mario still has more MRI and PET scans to undergo and likely more chemo treatments. “We’re still thinking he’s probably one in a million (because) he survived it in infancy,” Angela said.
Because the disease is so rare, Angela wants to educate the public about it and start fundraising for research and a cure. “There’s no money for this disease. There’s nothing. It’s thrown in with cancer, and you hope some doctors do some studies,” she said. “It’s considered an orphan disease because there are not enough kids to designate funds for it.” Despite everything, Mario seems to be handling things well. “He’s great,” Angela said. “He’s a trooper. He’s happy that it’s not anything harder.” While soccer season is now over, Mario is signed up for September. “This summer, he’s been crazy. He plays with his dad all the time,” Angela said. By the end of August, Mario will have finished a year of treatment. jmoreau@burnabynow.com
Warning: Check your HST receipts Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
Now that the new harmonized sales tax is in effect, you may want to check your receipts to make sure you’re not being overcharged. The Fight HST campaign is warning consumers of multiple problems reported with the implementation of the new tax. The HST replaced the five per cent GST and the seven per cent PST for a new federal tax
of 12 per cent, effective July 1 in B.C. In a press release, Fight HST leader Bill Vander Zalm noted that HST is being charged on top of things, like eco-fees and parking sales tax, and many parking vendors and other businesses have used harmonization as an opportunity to increase prices. “It’s outrageous,” he said. Vander Zalm reported receiving e-mails from people complaining about the new

tax. For example, a Mac’s Convenience store in Salmon Arm charged someone $2.33 for a magazine that was $1.99 before taxes. The receipt listed 12 per cent PST plus five per cent GST for a total of 17 per cent sales tax. The customer should have only been charged 12 per cent HST. “Even some large chains haven’t figured out what they are supposed to charge in taxes. It is a total mess and a total rip-

Development: Sustainability concerns 79 condos. The residences are part of Phase 3 of the project, which spans the western portion of University Crescent, or the West Highlands. Construction on the UniverCity daycare has begun, and the building may be the first in Canada to meet the Living Building Challenge, according to a recent Burnaby NOW article. The daycare is slated to open in September 2011. The childcare centre, with 50 spaces, was included as a requirement in the approved rezoning. Phase 4 involves the lower-density Slopes neighbourhood, south of University High Street and east of Tower Road. The rezoning means development of 570,000 sq. ft. of residential space can begin in the Slopes neighbourhood, according to Harris. UniverCity buildings must be 30 per cent more energy efficient than regularly constructed buildings under the rezoning bylaw, he said, and the developments must include plans

community facilities and pools in the city. “It is not necessarily growing by leaps and bounds,” he said. But more pool space is needed to meet use demands, Ellenwood added, particularly in the Edmonds neighbourhood. “It is a good place for the pool,” he said. “It will be used by a lot of people there.” The construction portion of the project is estimated to be $38 million. The city is preparing to award the construction contract in September, so the demolishing and excavation phase of the project can begin in the fall. The city is approaching nine pre-qualified general contractors in August to determine which bidder will get the project. The project also includes 200 parking spaces, which will require street upgrades, according to the staff report.
for storm water management and include landscaping with native and drought resistant plants. UniverCity must also protect identified stands of existing trees between buildings, he added. Council’s approval came through five months after public consultation was conducted about the expansion project. In February, the development plan to shift density from Phase 4 of the project, which is a more family-oriented neighbourhood, to one of the towers in the Phase 3 area was put forward in a public hearing. Some residents were concerned about the height

of the proposed tower. The tower will be a maximum of 20 stories and will be adjacent to the water tower, which is slightly taller, according to the community trust’s plan. Last March, resident Judith Brock, a member of UniverCity Neighbours for Environmental Sustainability, said she was not happy about the height of the tower. The group is concerned about environmental issues in the area. “I don’t think that would be an appropriate building in this environment,” Brock said, adding she had heard the tallest UniverCity buildings were going to be about 11 stories tall.

Pay hike: Burnaby’s mayor now the fourth highest paid continued from page 1
Stewart told The Vancouver Sun that he was surprised to hear about the increase, and he thought it was bad timing because of the economy. “Certainly it’s challenging times, and I find it difficult for taxpayers to accept what I’m seeing in percentages, although it may be relative to what other councils are being paid,” Stewart said. “I’m doing my own personal review to see whether they’re in line.” Stewart added that council members should not be paid a proper wage but only enough to cover expenses and time away from their regular jobs. Port Coquitlam council approved a large pay hike for mayor and councillors at its meeting Monday. The raises were intended to bring council’s pay rates in line with similar sized municipalities. Mayor Greg Moore’s salary went from $67,277 to $85,418, a 27 per cent increase, and councillors’ pay went from $22,257 to $31,654, a 42 per cent increase. Port Coquitlam’s increases were calculated by taking the average of the remuneration and benefits of the two municipalities that had slightly higher populations than Port Coquitlam – Maple Ridge and New Westminster – and the municipalities just below, West Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver, according to The Vancouver Sun. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mayor should take the bus Dear Editor:
Re: Mayor’s raise badly timed, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, July 24 I agree with Harry Bloy when he says, “Corrigan has dipped his hand deep into the public’s cookie jar and grabbed himself an exorbitant 17 per cent pay increase.” This is simply self-serving on Mr. Mayor’s part. Exactly what is it that he needs to justify $900 per month in a car allowance? The vehicle itself? Most likely a leased vehicle from the city. Insurance and registration? Again, paid for by the city. Petrol? It would be foolhardy for him to burn off $900 in gas since Burnaby is generously covered by transit (of

which Mr. Corrigan was chair of the transit committee), and it is only one bus route from city hall up to the Metro Vancouver offices. With planning, the bus can be more efficient and more green than using the mayor’s car. Has Burnaby seen a 17 per cent surge in population growth to the extent that the volume of necessary (not optional) administrative work done by a Burnaby mayor justifies the added burden that is resolved by a higher salary? I am thinking the required interaction with city management needed to actually run the city, not the optional be-at-asocial function that is important to all politicians but is hardly compulsory for the actual running of a big city. It is the city manager, together with the

But exactly what additional burden is there on him with our current population level than there was when the population was less three years ago? Inflation right now is less than five per cent. Incineration not a bad idea
Dear Editor:
Re: Garbage will be burned, Burnaby NOW, July 24 If we are going to the expense of building an incinerator for the garbage, I wonder if anyone has taken a look and researched countries that are doing it right. Recently I was in Vienna, where they have an incinerator in the middle of the city, and they actually use this burned garbage for heat, and the emissions are less than the cars on the freeway a mile away. By the way, the incinerator in Vienna is a beautiful and interesting piece of artwork by a local artist. Audrey Staudacher, Burnaby
MLA’s criticism hypocritical
Dear Editor:
Re: Mayor’s raise badly timed, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, July 24 Perhaps Mr. Bloy would like to explain how it is not hypocritical of him to criticize the mayor and city councillors’ pay hike, when not two years ago the B.C. Liberals, Mr. Bloy included, voted to give themselves a substantial raise. It’s quite interesting to see the MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed decry tax increases, especially now that he and his party voted to bring in the HST and increase the carbon tax rate on Canada Day. What, if anything, makes the tax increases that he and his government pushed through any better than the tax increases that Mayor Corrigan and Burnaby city council created? Surely MLA Bloy isn’t attempting to state that a pair of taxes that disproportionately affect lower income citizens could be subjectively viewed as better than a property tax. It would be my fervent hope that this newfound distaste for taxation will result in Mr. Bloy voting to remove the HST from British Columbia. It would even have the added bonus of putting his votes in line with the views of the vast majority of his constituents. Please, Mr. Bloy: It’s not too late to fix the predicament you’re in. All that is required is that you stop flailing about for a target to attack and start doing your job as a representative of the people, not the party.

Trevor Ritchie, Burnaby
Angst: Voters’ anger irrational continued from page 6
hateful stuff. And it’s not just Campbell who is a target on the Internet. NDP leader Carole James seems to be despised by many of the same people who profess to be Campbell haters. Here she is with a 20plus point lead in opinion polls, and there are still those on the left who want to decapitate her leadership. Two recent articles in left-wing media outlets reflect the angst on the left. The comments following the articles, for the most part, excoriated James and demanded that she step down before the next election. This doesn’t make sense. But it is further evidence of an irrational
anger that is spread across the political spectrum. For example, it has been near impossible to have a rational debate on the HST. I’ve pointed out the NDP estimates the average “hit” to a consumer from the HST is about $520 annually, which works out to $10 a week or about $1.50 a day. But when I use those stats to make the point that the HST, while unpopular, may not be quite as horrific as some insist, I get denounced as a Liberal apologist or worse. Anyone who sticks their head up right now runs the risk of it getting shot off. The trouble is, I don’t see any relief any time soon on any front. Unless the courts throw it out,
the HST is likely here to stay. (In fact, even if court action derails it, I suspect it will only be temporary relief.) Our B.C. Hydro rates will continue to increase, for at least a few years. The carbon tax will go up again next year, and our municipal property taxes will continue to climb. And that Port Mann bridge toll will take effect a couple of years from now, and the prospect of more tolls cannot be discounted. Everyone will continue to get dinged, over and over again. And I’m not sure when that crankiness and disenchantment will end. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter with Global B.C.

Three Burnaby-based musicians will be performing at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver. Russell Sholberg, with the Redboot Trio, is playing the opening reception at the Park Royal Fountain Stage, at Ambleside Landing, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. His gypsy jazz trio includes Amelia Rose and Steven Charles. The group is usually a quartet, but Alison Jenkins is performing in Barkerville this summer. Sholberg has been playing the stand up bass for 15 years and has been performing with Redboot for three years. The music the trio plays is sort of gypsy cabaret, he says. “It is mostly all (highenergy acoustic) original music,” he says. “Our main goal is to continue recording original music.” The trio is also playing the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival this summer. Sholberg is involved with other groups and projects as well, including Zeelia, the Tony Wilson 6tet, Aeroplane Trio, Kevin House and Joel Kroeker. Burnaby singer and songwriter Sayde Black is playing two concerts at the festival on Aug. 1. She plays one of the daytime garden concerts at Pacific Arbour Garden Stage in Millennium Park at 3 p.m., and at the fountain stage at 5 p.m. Black is currently in the

The festival kicks off this weekend with a performance by Redboot Trio. studio recording her first full-length album. “It’s pretty exciting,” she says. She started singing
background vocals for her brother Rod Black with his band Jet Black Stare. He is co-writing her album. She counts Serena
Ryder, Susan Tedeschi, Ella Fitzgerald, Sheryl Crow and Sarah Harmer among her influences. Her album should be coming out before
Christmas, Black says, and she thinks it will be titled Hidden Bonfire. David Sinclair, a Burnaby guitarist, will be playing
with harmonica virtuoso Keith Bennett at 9 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the fountain stage. The duo has played together for the past few months. “We started doing things fairly recently, in April and May,” Sinclair says. A mutual friend approached Sinclair after a solo show, suggesting he start playing with Bennett. Their first show together sold out. Sinclair and Bennett are working on a rootsy CD, Sinclair says. “Now we have a pretty good repertoire of what we play together,” he says. Collaborating is a different creative process, Sinclair says. “There’s a whole different mindset of what’s required,” he says. “It keeps me going and excited about the music.” Both men are vocalists as well, and sing original tunes. The music is a blend of acoustic blues, jazz and modern folk. Sinclair plays a variety of musical styles, including jazz, pop and rock, and has played popular music alongside the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He started playing guitar when he was eight. His grandmother moved close to him, bringing her piano and guitar. He had a choice of which instrument to learn to play and chose the guitar, he says. Bennett and Sinclair are currently working on an album together, as well.
The kids just gotta sing and dance Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Some people just can’t fight the urge to sing and dance. That could be said about five Burnaby girls, ranging in age from 11 to 14 years old, who are among the 70 young performers participating in the Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! Program in Vancouver. Tagnea Grant, 14, Brittany Gee-Moore, 13, Maria Sekaly, 13, Nicole Heidema, 12, and Michela Banks, 11, have all been part of the annual summer theatre program for multiple years. They will be among the performers in Out of This World, written by program director and creator Perry Ehrlich, and David Hudgins. The musical is based on the TV show
Gilligan’s Island. The story takes place in the year 2525 when a rocket bound for the moon is deflected and lands on the planet Neptune, which is inhabited by musical theatre performers. Gilligan, Skipper, Ginger, Mary Ann, the Professor, and Mr. and Mrs. Howell meet the Neptunites but fear attack by the Monotones, who also live on Neptune and are controlled by the evil Dr. Elvirus. The passengers are protected by Neptune’s police force – the space cadets – who are blonde and brawny but not very brainy. Tagnea, a Moscrop Secondary student in her sixth year with the program, is excited to be involved. “It’s a great way to spend my summer,” she says. Tagnea, who plays one of the musical’s
narrators has been dancing since she was three and hopes to be on Broadway some day. Brittany who attends Stratford Hall in Vancouver, has also been dancing since she was three. She will be playing the Mona Lisa and one of the space cadets. Maria, also a Moscrop Secondary student, loves musical theatre. “I enjoy working with people who share the passion for musical theatre that I do,” she says. Maria will be playing the roles of first wife and second actor. Nicole, who attends Gilmore Community School, is playing airplane inventor Wilbur Wright. Nicole enjoys taking on another persona, she says.
“You can be cheesy and hilarious, and no one would judge you,” she says. Nicole really enjoys the set construction parties, where each group helps out with painting and construction, then has pizza and goes swimming afterwards. Michela, who attends Seaforth Academy, says the program has brought her out of her shell. “I used to be shy, but now I’m not,” she says. “It really helped me.” The musical also features appearances by Elvis Presley, Conan O’Brien and the ladies from The View, and it includes more than 30 songs. Performances are at the Norman Rothstein Theatre at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, 950 West 41st Ave. in Vancouver. It’s on stage tomorrow (July 29) at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 604-257-5111 for further information.

or many of us, meat is an important part of our daily diet. Whether it’s beef, lamb, pork or chicken, it is important to know the basics of creating the most flavour possible. Marinades seem to be first and foremost in people’s minds when it comes to creating flavour in cooked meats. Although they do create flavour, they are also important in making a cut of meat more tender. The best marinades are made up from the simplest of ingredients that you have in your home already. Please don’t rely on the packages of powder you find at the supermarkets. Marinades are made up from a base, an acid and flavourful ingredients. The base of a marinade is usually oil, as this will aid in the cooking process. An acid such as vinegar, wine or lemon juice is added to breakdown the tougher proteins found in the meat. Red meats and pork, depending on the cuts, are the toughest and are better to marinate from one hour up to 24 hours. Chicken proteins are
much more delicate and are more preferably marinated for no longer than four to six hours. Over-marinated chicken will actually start to become tough. The same follows through with seafood, as its protein composition is even more fragile than chicken. Seafood should usually be marinated for a mere 30 minutes to an hour. The flavour combinations that can be added to a marinade are literally endless. Crushed garlic, herbs, spices and condiments are just a few. Be creative. Flavour creation does not only exist by marinating. Searing meats, marinated or not, is important. There is virtually no cooking method that should exempt one from searing meat first. This develops a crust that will carry flavour all the way through to the finished dish one is preparing. Stew, for example, has a more developed beef flavour when the stew meat pieces are browned prior to the addition of other ingredients. Many presume searing seals juices inside the meat. This, however, is incorrect as no amount of searing can prevent the loss of moisture. The flavour in crust development can be enhanced even further by the addition of seasoning. If the meat has not been
marinating, you may want to add salt and pepper to the meat prior to searing. This simple seasoning will then become part of the meat’s outer shell. Applying dry rubs, consisting of a mixture of many different spices, prior to searing is popular for adding a complexity of flavours. Searing should be done at a high temperature with an amount of oil that prevents sticking. Do not crowd the pan or surface area, as this will decrease the temperature and cause the meat to simmer in its juices rather than caramelize. Searing also creates “browned bits” (called fond) on the bottom of a pan. Fond will also add depth in flavour to a sauce being created. To achieve this, add a liquid, such as wine or stock, to the pan and loosen these bits with a wooden spoon. Use this liquid as a part of the sauce or reduce it further it to become a sauce of its own. The reduction process of this liquid will cause water to evaporate thus concentrating the flavours and creating a desired sauce consistency. Taste and adjust the sauce as necessary prior to serving. ◆ Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez. com. Visit his website at www.chefdez.com.

Amorosa Chicken, Roman style Pasta House Marinating meat is something chefs have been doing for centuries. This recipe, chicken vardanus, is an ancient, traditional Roman recipe translated from Latin. ◆ Chicken Vardanus Cook 3 lbs of chicken (with bone) in the following liquid: 45 ml (3 tbsp) liquamen (Asian fish sauce, soy sauce works, too) 22 ml (1 1/4 tbsp) olive oil 250 ml (1 cup) fruity white wine After the chicken is done, pour off cooking liquid and reserve.
For white sauce, combine the following in a sauce pan: 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) white pepper corns 75 ml (1/3 cup) pine nuts crushed whites of two hard-boiled eggs 60 ml (1/4 cup) cooking liquid 60 ml (1/4 cup) milk (for a stiff sauce) or 125 ml (1/2 cup) milk (for a more liquid sauce) Cook, stirring constantly for a smooth sauce. Pour sauce over chicken on a platter and serve. Free-range chicken is closest to what Romans would have eaten. editorial@burnabynow.com

ing the spare, to make sure they are in good condition. For more tips go to www. drivesmartsavegreen.com. No. 3 - Secure it: Make sure you properly secure all items inside and on your vehicle. Dr. Majid Fotuhi, leading neurologist and author of “The Memory Cure,” debunks common myths about the brain and aging: 1. Brain growth stops after childhood. Research suggests that each time a

your guide to mature living
What’s on your retirement plate? Volunteer and make a difference Nutritionists and health professionals tell us about the importance of a balanced diet. Fruit, starches, whole grains and protein, with the right amounts of fat, sugar and salt help keep our bodies strong and running into old age. But have you thought of how a well-balanced plan can help give you a financially healthy retirement? If you’re currently in or close to retirement, you need to think about how your savings can better maximize your retirement income. With the help of your financial advisor and a “product allocation” strategy, you could have a healthier financial retirement. Product allocation involves placing your savings into different product categories to help you improve your retirement income. Visit www.helpmysavingslast.ca or make an appointment with your financial advisor to find a better retirement solution for you. — NC

SFU celebrates totem rededication Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
SFU had two totem poles re-dedicated in a special ceremony on July 22. The ceremony was to celebrate the installation of two historic totem poles outside the Office for Aboriginal Peoples at the Burnaby campus. The poles were carved by the late Tshimsian artist Ray Wesley. They were originally erected more than three decades ago in SFU’s Naheeno Park. Left in the overgrown brush, they were weath-
ered, worn and forgotten until 2007, when they were removed for restoration and relocation on campus. Some family members of the late carver attended the installation celebration. Barbara Winter, curator of SFU’s Museum of EthnologyandArchaeology, and OAP director William Lindsay were on hand to recount some of the poles’ history. Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and have been playing football since I was in the seventh grade. From very early on, I knew I wanted to play professional football and focusing on that goal kept me motivated to do well in high school and get in to university so I’d have an opportunity to realize my dream. After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still love coming to work every day and doing whatever I can on offence to help this club win a championship for the CFL’s best fans. Growing up, I saw firsthand what could happen to kids who don’t stay focused on their goals so I’m very aware of making sure my own children are surrounded by positive influences, whether it’s encouraging my teenage son to do well in high school or coaching my younger son’s football team. It’s also a big reason why I love taking part in our club’s community programs. Among the programs I take part in, I would say the Lions Pride program is one of the most rewarding because I’ve seen firsthand what happens to a young person’s life when they make the right choices. The decisions a youth makes today will affect them tomorrow and I take pride in knowing I may have helped direct one of these young people down a positive path.

Old birds set to soar as hosts Tom Berridge

It’s been 16 years since Dan Taylor conceived the idea for the Lower Mainland Baseball Association. Since then, the organization has expanded into the largest adult baseball league in Canada, including 32 teams in 15 Lower Mainland communities. Taylor’s Burnaby Brewers, a core group of mostly over-40-year-olds, initially played in the over-30 division. As time went by, the moniker morphed into the Burnaby Buzzards, when the teammembers began passing the halfcentury milestone. But despite a few more grey hairs and a whole lot more aches and pains, it’s still the greatest game in the world for a core group the Burnaby diehards. Rod Van Dorn pitched that first game the Brewers played at Gordon Park in Vancouver. “I still get butterflies before every game,” he admitted. Taylor was behind the plate and played three full innings before suddenly calling timeout to search the sand for his glasses that were knocked off while removing his mask for a first-inning foul ball.
“That was very special,” added now 63-year-old second base Jack Allen of that first game. “I guess it was well over 25 years since any of us had played organized baseball. It was just a treat getting back and enjoying what a pleasure it is.” For Ron Frederick, who joined the team a year after its beginning in 1995, it was a place to come to after hanging up the glove following a senior men’s national championship title he shared in Chatham, N.B. nearly 20 years earlier. “Just getting out here. Rod (Van Dorn) and I were coaching our kid’s teams. He kept bugging me to come out, and then when I got here, the guy playing shortstop was a guy I had played with 20 years before that,” said Frederick. That guy was Bill Jackson, who apart from his exploits on the ball diamond, came up with the idea of the name change, adapting the logo of the St. Louis Cardinals with a pair of buzzards perched on a baseball bat. Strangely enough, the mental image of a flock of old birds flying into the sunset does not seem that ridiculous with the Canadian National Old-timers Baseball championships just days away. The championships run in Burnaby from Friday to Monday.
Willingdon Avenue Interchange Motorist and Pedestrian Access Changes
Improvements to the Willingdon Avenue Interchange are set to begin as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project. On July 23, 2010, the east sidewalk will be closed for construction and all pedestrians will use the west side of the Willingdon Avenue overpass. Pedestrian routes will be well-signed. On August 3, 2010, the existing westbound off-ramp to Willingdon Avenue north will be closed. Motorists wishing to travel northbound on Willingdon Avenue from Highway 1 westbound will use the existing Willingdon Avenue south exit, which will be reconfigured to accommodate this traffic. These traffic pattern changes will be in place for approximately one year and are required to build a new overpass and improve safety for motorists exiting and accessing Highway 1. For more information or to view a detailed map of these changes, please visit the PMH1 Project web site at www.pmh1project.com, call 1 866 999-7641(PMH1) or e-mail info@pmh1project.com

*PRICE MATCH. We determine a major competitor based on our assessment of a number of relevant factors that may vary by region. “Items you buy most” refers to our top selling products. We check competitor pricing on the majority of items you buy most on a weekly basis; and in all cases, no less than quarterly. We may not match a competitor’s short term promotional pricing activities(ie. one day sales or ‘door crashers’) or other promotional pricing activities such as ‘2 for 1’ or ‘buy 1 get 1 free’. We do not Price Match all items at all times; where we have Price Matched an item, it will be identified in-store. This is not a price match guarantee where we match any competitor price you find. PRICE CUT. Longer term price reductions on items identified in-store. “Items that matter most to you” refers to our top selling products. WEEKLY SPECIAL. Typically in effect from Saturday to Friday of each week on items identified in-store and/or in flyer.
