Picking a newsmaker or story of the year is usually quite easy.

Slow progress:

A politician wins a stunning victory, an athlete triumphs or somebody overcomes all the odds and obstacles to show us, the cynical reporters, that good can triumph over evil. But for 2010, that wasn’t so easy in Burnaby. In a year when so much happened in the Lower Mainland - that little thing called the 2010 Winter Olympics dominated the first two months of the year and the escalating gang violence in the region dominated the last two months - Burnaby always seemed to be a bit player in all of the proceedings. But one story kept on making the news and for that, the Burnaby NOW’s Newsmaker of the Year for 2010 is the Western painted turtle and the dredging project at Burnaby Lake. The year began with the dredging project in limbo as scientists scrambled to figure out where exactly the turtles were. They has to make sure they were out of harm’s way before the dredging started. The city used radar and sonar equipment to

ensure the turtles weren’t in the active dredging zones. It wouldn’t be until March that the dredging project could begin, but in the meantime, the city was paying out thousands of dollars a day for equipment to sit idle by the lake’s edge. Even as scientists concluded their studies and discovered the turtles were steering clear of the dredging areas, Mayor Derek Corrigan weighed in on what he thought about the turtles: “They’re smarter than some scientists I know.” Hazco was contracted to do the dredging on the project that was originally slated to include 360,000 cubic metres of sediment removed. But as the project continued at the pace of 900 cubic metres per day – based on a 16hour day, six days a week – the project was reduced to 185,000 cubic metres, according to a staff report. While those numbers were down, the most important number went up almost $5 million, as the project, originally slated to cost $16 million, is now slated to cost $20.567 million, plus HST. Did the Western painted turtle cost the city more than $5 million? Not by itself, but if it Environment Page 3

After 10 weeks on the picket line, HandyDART workers got back on the job after agreeing to a deal with their employer, MVT Canadian Bus. The 500 workers from the Amalgamated Transit Union, local 1724, had been on strike since Oct.

◆ Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian takes issue with Parliament being prorogued until March 3. The legislative session was supposed to begin on Jan. 25, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament. “He (Harper) certainly is taking

the entitlement around the use of government for his own personal means to a new level and that is deplorable,” said Julian. ◆ A new industrial workshop in the Burnaby Youth Custody Services facility opened, giving youth in prison hands-on skills training opportunities.

Property assessments were mailed out and in Burnaby, property values held steady and even grew marginally, from $50.55 billion in 2009 to $51.55 billion in 2010. ◆ Gloo Studios Inc., a full-service film production company, opened up shop at Hastings and Boundary. ◆ A man’s body was found in a burning January Page 8

weren’t for the little critter, the delays and revised project would not have ensued. The turtle also represents the larger issue of how much attention people are paying to the environment in Burnaby. At Stoney Creek, the streamkeepers had to deal with two separate fish kills after chemicals went into the stream and decimated the fish population. The volunteers there don’t gain financially from all the work they do, but that doesn’t dull their tireless work ethic and enthusiasm. In North Burnaby, the big environmental story was the leak or seep from the Chevron refinery into Burrard Inlet, which is still ongoing eight months later. There isn’t much oil going into the inlet – we’re not talking the Exxon Valdez here – but how the community and the company reacted to containing the leak is instructive on how we must take care of our most precious resource: our natural habitat. Coming back to Burnaby Lake as the year ends, the city is looking forward to having the project completed by March 2011. And what has happened to the little turtles of Burnaby Lake? If 2010 is any indication, you’ll find them swimming and basking in Deer Lake Brook and along the shoreline, just as they were spotted in February and March this year. Other stories that merited consideration for 2010 Newsmaker of the Year in Burnaby were: ◆ The Olympics. Although they were a bit of a non-event in the city, you can’t ignore them. While downtown Vancouver, Richmond and Cypress Mountain were the in-places for Olympic aficionados to be, Burnaby didn’t get any of that raucous party atmosphere. Sure, Burnaby residents made their way to parties in Vancouver, Richmond and North Vancouver, but ask any local merchants what happened in February and you’re likely to get an eye roll and a frown in return. NBC personalities Bob Costas and Matt Lauer won’t soon forget their runs through the city and the Russian and Czech delegations probably enjoyed staying in the city, but there wasn’t a defining Burnaby Olympic moment. ◆ Gang violence reared its ugly head once again. Burnaby was the unfortunate setting for the Oct. 16 murder of known gangster Gurmit Singh Dhak at Metrotown. Burnaby’s top cop went on 6

the record to say that Dhak’s death was more a matter of circumstance – Dhak was shopping at the region’s biggest shopping centre – than of Dhak being somebody who lived or worked in Burnaby. Dhak’s death led to an escalation of gang hostilities, with shootings all over the Lower Mainland, including one in Vancouver that saw 10 people shot within a block of the home of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. Once again, Burnaby was involved in the overall story, but it wasn’t a major part of the story. ◆ Local politicians didn’t make their voices heard enough. With Mayor Derek Corrigan leading a complete Burnaby Citizens Association sweep of council and school board, nary a dissenting voice in council or school board chambers was heard. Sure, Corrigan could be counted on to assail the provincial government for various cuts and downloads to the municipalities, but on the issues at the local level, the overarching theme was “nothing to see here, move on.” ◆ Provincially, Burnaby North MLA Richard Lee could have made a huge difference, sitting on the standing committee that determined the next steps after the anti-HST petition was delivered to Victoria. Lee didn’t have much to say, other than to vote in lockstep with his fellow Liberals on the committee. Raj Chouhan was good for a soundbite, as was Harry Bloy, but they possessed little power on the bigger scale. One provincial politico that did make a nice upward move was Kathy Corrigan, a first-term MLA who became the acting NDP caucus chair after a group of dissidents expressed their displeasure with leader Carole James. James eventually did the honourable thing and resigned, but that leaves Corrigan in the interesting position of leading a divided caucus that has to try and mend fences sooner, rather than later. ◆ Federally, the big news is BurnabyDouglas MP Bill Siksay announced he’s leaving politics and his counterpart, Burnaby-New Westminster’s Peter Julian announced he’s not ruling out a run at James’ old job. Newsworthy, but not the news story of 2010. ◆ On the theme of loss, Burnaby lost many good men and women in 2010. Former reeve Alan Emmott, also known as Mr. Burnaby, died, as did Pixie McGeachie, who was instrumental in helping preserve the city’s history, and Jennifer Atchison, founder of the Stoney Creek Environment Committee. Sporting figures Roman Tulis, who helped hundreds of kids realize their soccer dreams,

in Burnaby as he ran with the torch along Canada Way. Here, Lauer has his torch permanently snuffed out as reporters scrum around him.

and Les Norman, a lacrosse hall of famer, also died and the local sporting community will miss them dearly. ◆ On the positive side, the construction of a new Burnaby Central Secondary is happening at breakneck speed, the UniverCity development at SFU continues to grow into the urban village envisioned by its planners and the city continues with its plans to turn the Edmonds and South Metrotown area into more pedestrian-friendly communities. So, the turtle is our 2010 Newsmaker of the Year. And for people who want

Zellers Visions* Home Outfitters* Shoppers* Safeway* Home Depot* M&M Meats* Canadian Tire* * not in all areas

to be the Burnaby NOW’s Newsmaker of the Year in 2011, here’s a couple of hints: Shoot for the stars and try to do spectacular things. There are lots of opportunities: An autumn civic election may see some new faces get into council chambers, the ever-present threat of another federal election is also in the air and who knows what will happen on the provincial scene, especially with former Burnaby resident Christy Clark the frontrunner for Liberal leader. And hopefully, 12 months from now, we can enthusiastically endorse a person for the 2011 Burnaby NOW Newsmaker of the Year.

An 88-year-old man was killed on Christmas Day after he was hit by a car at Union Street and Willingdon Avenue in North Burnaby. According to the Burnaby RCMP, the man was wearing dark clothing and had jaywalked across the busy street at around 5 p.m. Saturday night. The man was taken to

hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police are not releasing the man’s name until his family has been contacted. The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Initial reports are that speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident. The Burnaby RCMP are continuing to investigate and are asking for any witnesses to call 604-2947922.

2010: The Year in Cartoons

I

Meet the woman behind the images

f a picture is worth a thousand words, then an editorial cartoon must be worst at least that much. Which would make Ingrid Rice one of the most prolific “wordsmiths” at the Burnaby NOW. As a tribute to the talents of the cartoonist whose insights into the world appear on these pages every edition, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite cartoons from the year 2010. And we asked Rice to provide us with a biography – which she has obligingly done. In her own words, here’s Ingrid Rice: A lifelong contempt for authority figures led Ingrid Rice into the murky netherworld of political cartooning. A neverending stream of subject matter has kept her there. She began her career in 1992, freelancing to The Vancouver Sun, where her cartoons enraged Reformers, feminists, assisted suicide opponents and some Gypsies (the Gypsy enragement was

completely unintentional – she had been aiming at gypsy moths). After her association with the Sun ended in ‘94, she began to syndicate her work across Canada from her North Vancouver base. Currently self-syndicated in over 45 markets across Canada, she relies on the kindness of editors for publication of her work, expends most of her energy trying to avoid becoming roadkill on the information highway, and worships the God of Clichés. ◆ Hobbies: Eating, sleeping and killing flies with an electric racket. ◆ Pet Peeve: Foreign films with subtitles that run across the bottom of the screen where the heads of the audience are in the way instead of at the top where the viewer has more than a snowball’s chance in hell of reading them! ◆ Hidden Talent: Expert on the care and husbandry of guinea pigs, which makes her an incredibly dull dinner guest.

Burnaby residents unable to afford the thousands of dollars for tickets to the gold-medal men’s hockey Olympic final had a nice, cheap local alternative: Local pubs and restaurants were packed to the gills and erupted in great cheer when Sidney Crosby scored the overtime Golden Goal. ◆ A sad weekend at St. Thomas More Collegiate, as recent graduate Ferdie Carrion dies in a car crash while coming home from Olympic celebrations downtown. A 20-yearold man also dies in the accident just off the TransCanada Highway and Willingdon Avenue. ◆ The Burnaby school district proposes tough new measures to deal with a $9 million budget shortfall. Some of the measures include a hiring freeze and reducing supplies and services by 10 per cent. ◆ The Byrne Creek Streamkeepers lament another massive fish kill after an unknown substance was washed into the water. Hundreds of local fish perish and the streamkeepers are left to clean up the damage. ◆ The HST starts hitting the news cycle, as the antiHST forces start holding meetings and rallies in the city. The tax, scheduled to take effect on July 1, would be in the news many more times. ◆ Burnaby’s Scott Xiao wins the Canwest Canspell Vancouver Regional Spelling Bee, which earned him the right to go to Ottawa and compete for the national title. 48TH ANNUAL BANTAM HOCKEY TOURNAMENT ONE OF OUR TOP THINGS TO ATTEND

Take the family skating on New Year’s Day I

t’s the beginning of the end. Nope, not the end of the world, it’s the last couple days of 2010, which means it’s time to get ready for a great 2011. With everything going on in this busy city of ours, how can you choose what to do? We’re continuing with our popular feature – our staff’s Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Week. Watch for it in our Wednesday editions. And, for the waning days of 2010 and the beginning days of 2011, here’s our offering: 1. Get into the good ol’ hockey game at the 48th annual Bantam Christmas Hockey Tournament, hosted by Burnaby Minor Hockey. The 16-team tournament includes defending champion Burnaby Winter Club, with games going on at both Bill Copeland and Burnaby Lake arenas. The games, which started on Dec. 27, go until Dec. 31, with the championship final going at noon on New Year’s Eve.

5

2. Get skating with a special New Year’s Day skate at (or more) the Bill Copeland Things to do this weekend Sports Centre at 3676 Kensington. The event is a special family skate from 5 to 8 p.m., with regular rates and admission fees applicable. 3. Get riding – or at least watching some of the best cyclists in the world – at the Burnaby 4 Days racing event at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre. The event, which started Dec. 27, runs until Dec. 30 and will see cyclists flying along the 200-metre track that banks at 48 degrees. Today (Dec. 29), the races run from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and on Dec. 30, events run all day from 9 a.m. For more information, go to www.burnabyvelodrome.ca or www.burnaby4.com.

Happy heritage holidays: Street entertainers keep the kids amused at the Burnaby Village Museum, which is all decked out for the holidays.

4. Get cultured with two art shows on display at our local libraries. Running to Jan. 9 at the Bob Prittie Library, 6100 Willingdon Ave., is Linocuts by Avis Rasmussen, featuring Take Five Coast to Coast. For more info, call 604-436-5400. If you’re in North Burnaby, the McGill library at 4595 Albert St. is featuring, until Jan. 10, an exhibit called the Selected Works from Victoria’s Ground Zero Printmakers. For more info, call 604-2998955.

5. Get partying with a couple of New Year’s Eve parties. First off, there’s the Great Bear Pub at 5665 Kingsway putting on its New Year’s Eve Party featuring Six Gun Romeo. For more info, call 604-433-8942. Also on this raucous Friday night, the Grand Villa Casino’s New Year’s Eve party, Famous Players II, will see the doors open at 6 p.m., show at 9 p.m. Also includes three-course meal, dance floor, champagne toast at midnight, party favours and balloon drop. Tickets

are very close to sold out, but if you get lucky, some last-minute tickets might be available. Tickets are $70 single, $140 for a couple, plus taxes and are on sale at guest services at the casino located at 4331 Dominion St. For more info, go to www. grandvillacasino.com. ◆ E-mail your Top 5 ideas to calendar@burnabynow.com or send them to alau@burnabynow.com. urnaby Family Life managed to secure more than $260,000 in government funding to hold a series of events designed to bridge gaps between different faiths. The project is the work

of the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table, which Burnaby Family Life is a member of. The table is a consortium of various groups working to make Burnaby more welcoming and inclusive for immigrants. The interfaith project is in the early stages but will involve forums organized around different faiths in January and February. Keep an eye on this paper for updates on times and locations.

Neighbourhood house party soon

Mark your calendars for one of the city’s biggest fundraisers of the year. The South Burnaby Neighbourhood House is holding its annual diamond ball on Feb. 19 at the Firefighters’ Banquet Hall. Tickets are $85 per person or $800 for a table of 10. There area also enticing prizes, including some Black Diamond jewelery, valued at $2,500. Proceeds

go towards the neighbourhood house, which has hundreds of volunteers that help local residents through a variety of programs. Call 604-431-0400 for tickets or more information.

Help for little ones

TheSmallAnimalRescue Society is holding another bottle and penny drive in Jan. 9. All of the money raised helps the group cover medical costs for the injured or abandoned small animals. The group is based

in Burnaby and run entirely by volunteers. To help, drop off returnable bottles and pennies at the Burnaby bottle depot, at 6893 East Hastings St., on Jan. 9, between noon and 3 p.m. For more information, email info@smallanimalre scue.org.

Terasen helps

Employees from Terasen Gas spent the holidays helping women and children fleeing violence. They held a toy drive for resi-

dents of Marguerite Dixon, Burnaby’s transition house for women escaping violence. As Terasen noted, the families arrive with very little, so the donated toys helped make Christmas a bit happier in the midst of difficulty. The toy drive is part of a larger holiday charity effort, where employees have raised more than $500,000 for groups throughout B.C. since 1994. jmoreau@burnabynow.com

TASTE Take a fresh look at food in the new year ON COOKING

A

Chef Dez

h, the start of a fresh year. What better time is there to make a pact with oneself to start anew? In the position of a culinary instructor, I encounter many situations with people wanting to improve areas of the culinary arts within their home kitchens and lifestyles. If you are undecided about making a resolution, contemplate making

one focusing on the culinary aspect in your life. The most common culinary resolution would be one of dietetic boundaries. Many people have the aspiration to start the New Year with a promise of either losing weight or getting in better physical shape. The change in what you consume on a daily basis will obviously influence your success, or lack thereof. Try making a resolution to yourself to investigate low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and/or high-protein cooking. This promise will involve educating yourself in these areas and putting the acquired information into practice. Go to the library, do

research on the Internet, buy a cookbook, and take a cooking class. Maybe a more suited resolution would be to revamp the state of your pantry and the food supply in your kitchen. Perhaps you have always wanted to have a pantry that is more focused on your favorite cuisines. For example, someone who loves Italian and Greek cuisine would stock their pantry with varying types of olives, capers, tomatoes, grape leaves, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, etc. The refrigerator and freezer can also be coordinated to contain the perishables of the same cuisine.

NEW YEARS EVE CELEBRATION

TASTE Chef Dez: Shake up your old food habits for the new year continued from page 15

Motivation to focus more on cooking certain cuisines in your household will start with having the ingredients at your fingertips. One can even take this to the extreme in organization by creating labels and segregating areas in your pantry for different food groupings. The simplest of all culinary resolutions, however, would be to blow dust off your cookbooks and start making some new dishes. Whether it is of small or large proportions, we all have collections of cookbooks … with many of them going unused. Make it a goal in your home to open up a cookbook once or twice a week and try a new recipe. If you choose to do this, make sure you are setting yourself up for success. Decide on and investigate the recipe prior to the date you plan on making it. Purchase the ingredients ahead of time, and ensure that you have the basic equipment and utensils necessary to successfully complete the task at hand. This will help eliminate any stress that you may encounter during preparation. “Attitude is everything.” This is the best advice I can give you. Whatever you approach in life, from making a resolution, making new friends or making a new recipe, proceed in a positive fashion. You will always find what you are searching for. If you look for the positives in something or someone, you will always find them. The same applies if you are seeking out negatives. Be aware of what you are looking for, and your experience will always be more rewarding. ◆ Dear Chef Dez: I noticed in your “Healthy Choices” class, you mention that you had a significant weight loss years ago within a six-month period. How did you do it? – Tony R., Abbotsford Dear Tony: I did this by exercising and limiting fat grams – I didn’t count calories.

The more lean muscle mass a body has, the more calories the body will burn – even when sleeping. Therefore, going to the gym is extremely important. Calories are energy, and too many times prior I wasted my efforts limiting them too extensively in my total food intake. Without enough calories in my diet, I never had enough energy to maintain a regular exercise

program. Please keep in mind that I am not a dietician or medical professional. Everybody is different, and I believe that a successful method exists for everyone. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez. com or PO Box 2674, Abbotsford, B.C., V2T 6R4. Chef Dez is a food columnist, culinary instructor and cooking show performer. AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR SENIORS

Mother Nature is unpredictable, with heavy snowfalls and strong winds make power outages more common than most Canadians think.

• Batteries, flashlights, candles and matches

Since by age 60 the average person requires 15 times more lighting than when they were 10 years old – a power outage is an accident waiting to happen, if you’re not prepared.

• Water and juice

Here are a few of items to include, so you’re not left in the dark:

• Variety of dry food and canned goods that don’t require can openers • Water repellent tarps • Blankets • Battery-operated radio • First-aid kit • Fire extinguisher

• List of emergency phone numbers and a charged cell phone • An alternative source of power such as a mini-power generator available at GIObikes.com Lifestyle and recreational company GIO’s unique auction website allows you to purchase a mini-generator at an accessible price point to round out your toolkit. – (NC)

• Convenient location - close to shopping, medical services and Community Centre • Subsidized rent includes heat, light & cable • Fabulous views - beautiful gardens • Active Social Program For more information please call

Is a comfy ride worth the big money? CLICK & CLACK TALK CARS Ray & Tom Magliozzi

Dear Tom and Ray: My third black Mercury Grand Marquis, “Batmobile,” is a 2002 with 80,000 miles on it. Yesterday my dealer told me that the air bags have aged – lost their elasticity, inflatability and verve. My mind leapt to my 62-year-old breasts as the service manager described the problem.

If they were not replaced, he said, one day I would see my car riding very low and hear the pump, which inflates the bags, running hopelessly. The cost of replacing these bags is $1,200. I plan to keep the car at least another two years. A good new bra is $30. That’s a big difference. What is your advice? Shall I make the repair? – Fee TOM: $1,200 is a lot of money, Fee. That’s 40 bras. RAY: The air bags your dealer is talking about are not the driver and passenger air bags that protect you in an accident; they’re the rubber air bladders that serve as springs in

this car’s air suspension system. TOM: That’s what gives you that pillowy, tushcoddling ride you know and love. But it has a downside. RAY: Over time, the rubber degrades and starts to leak, and then the air pump has to run more and more frequently to try to keep the bladders inflated. In the worst-case scenario, one or more of the bladders fails completely, and it’ll be like driving without springs. TOM: But if the dealer is just warning you that they’re starting to wear out, and he’s suggesting that you replace them in

cost you hundreds, but at least you’ll be able to afford underwear. Good luck, Fee. ◆ Tom and Ray offer a strategy for everyone who’s shopping for a car. SEYMOUR - Harry Passed away peacefully November 26th, 2010 after a short illness in New Westminster. He will be missed by his beloved Vi. His children Christopher, Patrick, Stephen (Joan Johnson), Joseph, Marie (Luke Balogh) Seymour. Always 'Diddy' to Darryl (Duke) Wolf, Michael Seymour, Shannon Wolf, Mary Seymour, Kim Fitwailter and six great grandchildren. Harry had many talents, there was nothing he couldn’t take on. He loved music, traveling and Coronation Street. Always a advocate for a properly made cup of tea and a kind heart for the less fortunate. Harry’s sense of humor and love of life was unraveling among those knew him. He worked tirelessly up until a week ago as Canada’s oldest active Bailiff. Harry never grew old just his body did. Special thanks by Carol, Randy, Richard, Nell and all his loyal friends. We will have celebration of Harry’s life on Saturday, January 8th, 2011, 12 noon - 2pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 631 6th St, New Westminster.
