More than 80 staff in the Burnaby school district hit the $100,000 mark for salaries in the 2010 fiscal year. According to the district’s annual statement of financial information, 82 people – mostly district staff, principals and vice-principals – earned six figures. Gina Cordoni, a teacher, was the top-paid employee, cashing out at $144,650. “This particular person shows up as an anomaly. She is a teacher who was participating in a deferred salary plan and cancelled the plan part way through, resulting in a payout of salary previously earned but deferred,” said Greg Frank, the district’s secretary treasurer. The salaries include benefits and reflect earnings before taxes. With Cordoni as an exception, Frank was the next highest-paid employee in the Burnaby school system with $144,619 in remuneration and more than $14,000 in expenses. Elected school trustees and the British Columbia Public Sector Employers Association approve salaries for district staff and principals. In all, the district spent roughly $193 million on salaries and benefits for the last fiscal year ending in June, 2010. That money paid more than 4,000 employees, Frank pointed out. Salaries and benefits account for 90 per cent of the district’s overall budget, which is a slightly higher percentage than the provincial average of 88.4 per cent – but that’s not because district staff are earning more. “We proportionately have more staff providing educational services. Christy Clark has won the Liberal leadership race, and the sole MLA that backed her campaign is more than pleased. “I was pretty excited. It was a great evening for British Columbia,” said BurnabyLougheed MLA Harry Bloy. “I think it’s good for the Liberal party. We have a new face in there, who’s been there before, but in today’s world, she’s a new face putting families first.” Bloy was also the only MLA to back Clark in her campaign; no other Liberal MLAs were onside, something Bloy attributed to Kathy Corrigan small groups working MLA Burnaby-Deer closely together and Lake sticking with people they know. “There are a few that were a little upset, … but all the ones since she won, they’re quite happy with her leadership,” he said. “I feel good. I made the decision early. I picked Christy because I thought she could win the next election. … She unites people, and the women voters like her.” Bloy said Clark had campaign teams in every riding across the province. “She was elected fairly right across the province. I respect everything Gordon Campbell did for 10 years, but it’s time for a change, and Christy can lead that

change,” he said. Kevin Falcon came in a close second with 48 per cent of the vote, while Clark secured 52. Bloy doesn’t see any problems arising from that in terms of a divide within the party. “Kevin has already said he’ll work closely with Christy to make the campaign go,” Bloy said. “I don’t think there’s a divide. They all ran within one party.” Bloy also pointed out that from 1996 to 2001, it was Clark, Rich Coleman, Gordon Campbell and Mike de Jong who were travelling the province, building the coalition of what is now the B.C. Liberal Party. As the premier in Harry Bloy waiting, Clark will be MLA Burnabysworn in in a couple of Lougheed weeks, but no date has been set yet. She needs to get into office through a byelection, and outgoing premier Gordon Campbell has said he’ll step down in his VancouverPoint Grey riding to make way for her. Kathy Corrigan, the NDP MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake, said she wasn’t surprised that the Liberals chose Clark, as she had a lot of newly signed-up supporters. Corrigan, who was at the Liberal convention, said it looked like a lot of people were displeased when Clark won. “There were a lot of unhappy people, and a lot of people left the room,” Corrigan

Here (in B.C.), you have the same people in this party

saying they are a coalition,” she said. “Somehow they have this unholy alliance they’re willing to pull together.” Corrigan was a Burnaby school trustee while Clark was education minister in 2001, when the Liberals took all but two of the seats in the legislature. “She was confrontational, she was divisive, she was arrogant. Earthquake: Tennis pro ‘happy to be alive’ after experience If the rain had been any worse, according to Richards, the day’s matches would have been postponed and all the tennis players would have been downtown, sightseeing and spending time at their hotel. When the earthquake hit at 12:51 p.m. local time, many of Christchurch’s downtown buildings were destroyed and at least 65 people were killed. Meanwhile, back at the tennis club, Richards was just getting a bite to eat. “I’m standing on some stairs, and I jumped two stairs at a time to get to the bottom,” said Richards. “We get outside, and when we got to the parking lot, much of the pavement had bubbled up and there was water, mud and sand coming out of the ground.” Fortunately, none of the tennis players were hurt – all matches were then postponed – but Richards still had to find out if Cashmore was OK. “I knew she was back at our hotel, so I was worried,” said Richards. “I heard one report that the hotel had been destroyed, so I was really starting to worry.” It would be six hours before Richards got word that Cashmore had safely gotten out of their hotel. “She had left her phone in the room when she evacuated,” said Richards, “but she borrowed somebody’s phone and got a hold of me.” Richards said his girlfriend had to run out of their second-floor room in the dark and push open an emergency door that was blocked by a foot-and-a-half of mud. “She squeezed out, and they made everybody get together in a park,” said Richards. Richards and a group of tennis players – six Canadians and six French – were supposed to meet up back in the park with their loved ones when their bus driver made an unexpected decision.

I would put any of our candidates, certainly the three front-runners, I would put any one of them up against Christy Clark,” she said. Clark will be the second female premier in B.C. history (Socred Rita Johnston was the first in 1991), but Corrigan doesn’t see gender giving the Liberals an edge with female voters, even though the NDP leadership candidates are all male. “I think what’s going to matter is the policies she has. She talks about change – she’s going to have to completely change her personality in order to attract female voters, because she attacked families (and) she attacked public education,” Corrigan said. I joined when my daughter was six years of age and participating in riding lessons there. She is now 25 and owns her own beautiful horse. The association has given her not only the opportunity to affordably own her own horse, but to participate in a wonderful sport close to home and socialize with good people with the same interests. My husband, my daughter and I have been very involved with the club over the years and continue to be so today. (Christmas with the Horses), youth programs, riding shows, competitions and clinics that are available to the public. The club was founded many years ago to provide a place for young girls and boys to learn about horse care and riding, and it continues to hold these same values today. For these opportunities we, and the club, are appreciative to Burnaby for its support in the way of the land lease for our barns, indoor riding arena and for the many improvements they have made to the nearby trails in recent years. I am concerned over the article in the Feb. 26 edition of the Burnaby NOW that characterizes the club as being insensitive and uncaring to the point that two members feel they are “bullied.” Although admittedly, there are some internal issues over the state of their paddock, the association has processes written into its bylaws to ensure the fair treatment

of all members. It is important that these processes be followed for a fair adjudication of issues. As you accurately reported, these processes have not been followed by the complainants. The board of directors is following the expert advice it had been given and is treating these members as they would any others, without prejudice. Other members who were identified as having a similar issue, complied without question. Having served on the board of directors myself in years past, I appreciate the many hours of effort and deliberation that is put into resolving issues such as this. It is no easy task. We are a cooperative club and rely on members showing respect to each other and the democratically elected board and committees. I believe that those who volunteer to run the club are doing their best and don’t deserve the way that they and the club are portrayed in the NOW article. Our experience as members of the Burnaby Horsemen’s Association has been very positive. There are many members who spend countless hours in many volunteer capacities from the operation, to running events, to maintaining the facilities. It is a lot of hard work, but is very rewarding at the end of the day. Our most recent open house, where my husband and I dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, was a great success with many good horse demonstrations and pony rides for more than 100 children. I am very concerned that comments by a representative of the city that our lease may not be renewed at the end of the term could bring all this to an end. We don’t deserve this fate because of two members who put

their own personal interests ahead of all else at any expense. I ask that you please take into consideration my views and other letters you may receive before making any judgements, because there are always two sides to each story. Sherry Needes, by e-mail

Conflicts numerous at club

Dear Editor:

As a Burnaby Horsemen’s Association member who attended the protest last week, I was interested to note the comments in your article from the association’s president, Heather Brookes, that there has been little conflict at the Burnaby Horsemen’s Association over the past few years (Infighting plagues horse group, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 26). On the contrary, the recent history of the association has been nothing but conflicts. Alice’s paddock is simply the first to come to the attention of the public. The deeper problems at the association relate to inadequacies in governance and financial responsibility on the part of the board. These were detailed in the 2005 organizational audit by the City of Burnaby, and after six years, have still not been addressed. Concerned association members hope that some basic structural changes can be made at the upcoming annual general meeting. The Burnaby Horsemen’s Association is a public treasure for the City of Burnaby and needs to be run in a publicly accountable way. It cannot be run as a private club for the benefit of a few members.

change to the B.C. Liberal government. So how does that translate into changes at the cabinet table? Because she had the support of only one MLA – Harry Bloy – Clark doesn’t really owe many people any favours. But the political reality of keeping her coalition party together means she must keep key supporters of rival Kevin Falcon in the fold. So don’t expect cabinet stalwarts such as Falcon, Rich Coleman, Pat Bell, Shirley Bond, Barry Penner or George Abbott to form an exodus from the head table. But I’m not so sure certain others – notably

Kevin Krueger and perhaps Iain Black, Murray Coell, Ida Chong, Randy Hawes, and even Colin Hansen – should feel totally secure in their posts. To demonstrate real change, Clark is going to have to bring in some new faces. And that means some current ministers have to pay the ultimate price. Her real challenge, however, is dealing with two independent MLAs – Bill Bennett and Blair Lekstrom – who left the B.C. Liberal caucus on unhappy terms. Clark has been criticized as being a threat to party unity and of being the kind of leader who could wreck the so-called free enterprise

coalition. Bringing Bennett and Lekstrom back into caucus – perhaps not cabinet – would go a long way to show that maintaining party unity is indeed something she is capable of. The night of her leadership win, all the MLAs joined her on the stage in a show of at least public unity. Watching from the floor was Bennett – who seems ready to rejoin his colleagues. But he has to be invited back first – and the new premier might want to think about asking her caucus to do just that. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

based on the story of Eileen Lorenz, a Galiano Island resident who was the sole survivor when a fishing vessel sank during a freak storm in 1962. It also offers a snapshot of the families and communities involved in the West Coast fishing industry and probes into how the decimation of that industry has affected women on the coast. Women In Fish was originally created as a radio play, written by Marie Clements and Rosemary Georgeson, along with Lorenz herself. The live multimedia theatre presentation at Shadbolt will be presented along with community workshops from March 2 to 4, when the theatre wants to hear from women

who have been involved in the fishing industry and life on the Fraser River and along the coast. A Burnaby singer will be part of the lineup when the Shooting Stars Foundation presents its Motown Meltdown event on March 26. Alita Dupray takes to the stage as part of a jam-packed lineup for the fundraiser, happening at

hen Louis Kong was looking for a high-end Chinese restaurant in Burnaby, he couldn’t find much to suit him. After all, he was used to not being able to go two steps in Richmond before another great restaurant was before him. So when the Delta Burnaby Hotel was looking for a showcase Chinese restaurant to go in the street-level spot on Dominion Street – right beside the Grand Villa Casino – Kong couldn’t have been happier. “Our company runs two Chinese restaurants in Richmond already, and this was a great opportunity to come into Burnaby,” said Kong, a 20-year hospitality industry veteran.

Chan. “You have to try the Peking duck,” said Chan of the $32.98 delicacy that is actually two dishes in one. Chan delicately slices the crispy skin off the duck right in front of you, and then you wrap it up in the Chinese pancake with a little bit of Hoisin sauce, and you have a Chinese delicacy. Chan has three decades of hospitality experience, and he’s ready and eager to explain every dish on the menu to diners. “The duck is very tender,” said Little Sis. “A nice start to the meal.” The second dish is a lettuce wrap, with the duck meat minced with nuts and eaten with Hoisin sauce. “I really like how the nuts go with the sauce,” said my mom, whom I consider my Chinese food expert. “Very good and a very good price.” That’s music to Kong’s Grand Dynasty Page 14

ears, as he wanted the perfect mix of high-end Chinese meals without the accompanying high-end prices. Next up were a couple of So’s signature dishes, the sweet and sour rock cod and the prawns, served in a circular bed of broccoli. “Using the freshest healthiest ingredients and

serving them with my own artistic style,” said So, “that’s what we’re trying to do at Grand Dynasty.” So is a 32-year-veteran of the kitchen, and he believes how a dish looks is as important as how it tastes. That’s why when the fish comes out, it appears the fish is looking right at us, daring us to eat. Well, we know who

won that staredown because So’s handiwork is quite tasty, with the sweet sauce meshing nicely with the tender flaked white meat that literally falls off the bone into your mouth. The prawns were as large as golf balls, and I couldn’t have enough of them. When the scallops, served with sweet peas and

celery, came out, we could see that the overarching theme of plump, succulent seafood was continuing with this dish. “Our customers say we have some of the best seafood anywhere,” said Kong. And who was I to argue, as I had to fend off family for my share of the scallops.

We finished with the sweet-and-sour pork, which featured generous meat portions and the underrated honeydew melon balls comprising part of the sweetness. It was almost too much food for us, but as all Chinese people know, it’s a sign of disrespect if you don’t have enough food for everybody at the table.

Check out a photo of Patrick Moriarity dancing, and you’d never guess he’s the guy who used to stand in the corner and refuse to dance. The photos show a confident man with the posture and attitude of a poised, professional salsa dancer. They don’t show the guy who was too scared to even try to move on a dance floor. Moriarity can laugh now, a little, about that guy, remembering the one time he did try to dance – in the safety of his own bedroom, with the door closed. “I just felt really stupid,” he says now, with a bit of a chuckle. “I truly was horrified to dance.” He was a teenager then. Flash forward to age 36, and Moriarity is running his own salsa dance company, Dance Vancouver, and getting ready to take to the stage at the Vancouver International Salsafestival this week. Moriarity, who lived and taught in Burnaby for six years, will be one of the instructors for a full-day introductory salsa bootcamp being held Saturday. He’ll also take to the stage on Friday night with partner Scarlet Sanchez-Fuentes, alongside their mentors, John Navarez and Liz Rojas of Salsamania in San Francisco. It’s a big leap from where Moriarity used to be – and even more of a leap when you consider that he didn’t even take up dancing till age 27. Though he’d always had a hidden hankering to learn to dance, he didn’t do anything about it until a painful breakup made him take stock of his life. His mother told him he should take the time to pursue things he was passionate about. “At that time, I wasn’t really passionate about anything,” Moriarity says. That fact struck him as so sad that he

realized it was time to tackle that “things I’ve always wanted to try” list. He had a brief fling with mountain biking – which ended when a fall convinced him he could seriously hurt himself – and then moved on to dancing. He hasn’t looked back. Moriarity was drawn to salsa because it came wrapped up in a social package, with organized dance events at clubs around Vancouver. At first, he pursued salsa as just a social and recreational outing. But, he notes, he gradually got drawn further into the world and realized that it was, indeed, something he was truly passionate about. “There’s something a little bit deeper, at least for me, when it comes to dancing,” he says. By 2006, he was so immersed in salsa dancing that he was running his own company, Dance Vancouver, which offers salsa lessons at various clubs and venues around Vancouver. These days, he laughs, it’s gotten so busy that he and Sanchez-Fuentes are going to have to figure out how to duplicate themselves to get everything done. But he’s excited to be part of Salsafestival this weekend. Teaching the beginner bootcamp, in particular, appeals to him because it gives him a chance to share his message about salsa: “It’s something everybody and anybody can do, and everybody and anybody is welcome.” If he can, he says, anyone can. “I’m just a totally regular guy,” he says. “I had zero, zero, zero training. New parents who enjoy going to the movies but don’t want to have to duck out in the middle in case their baby starts screaming will soon have a new place to go. The Dolphin Cinema in Burnaby Heights is joining Vancouver’s popular Movies for Mommies network, where select cinemas offer matinee screenings that cater to the cradle and crying crowd. “We thought it would be a good thing to start in our neighbourhood,” said Dolphin Cinema manager Rahim Manji. “Moms can come in and watch a movie, and it’s OK if their kids are running around or, if it’s too loud, we can turn it down, and stuff like that geared towards new mothers or fathers.” It’s aimed at parents with babies, but they won’t turn you away if you bring your toddler along. Keep in mind, however, that most movies being shown are for adults. Burnaby athletes won a total of 17 medals at the Canada Winter Games, including six gold. Burnaby North Secondary student Shirley Fu was a big winner, taking gold in both the women’s singles and doubles table tennis finals in the final weekend of the Halifax Games. Fu defeated Annie Coulombe of Quebec 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 11-1 in championship singles play on Feb. 25. She swept Jiawei Liu of Ontario in straight sets in the semifinals. Fu also teamed with Michelle Liaw for gold in doubles, winning her second first-place medal with an 11-4, 11-13, 13-11, 11-9 victory over Yu Bo Zhang and Jasmin Yao of Alberta on Saturday. The 15-year-old Fu also shared a team bronze with 13-year-old Michael Yue of Burnaby and the B.C. team earlier in the week. Yue brought back a second bronze medal in the mixed doubles. Yue and 11-year-old Tian Xaio Zhou gave up three and six years, respectively, to their older opponents from Quebec, Mathieu Thériault and Li Quan Ly, but managed an 11-7, 8-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6 win in the consolation final on Saturday. Last Thursday, Knight won a third medal, this time a bronze, in the 5 km standing classic para female cross-country. In figure skating, Burnaby ice dancers Zhao Kai Pang and Timothy Lum placed first and third, respectively, in the novice finals. Pang, a 15-year-old Moscrop student, and 14year-old partner Madeline Edwards scored 91.21 total points, including a high 63.62 score following the free dance to win gold. Lum, 16, and 12-year-old partner Noa Bruser won the bronze with a 60.68 free dance score to give the pair 87.14 total points. Burnaby Centre of Excellence skater Adonis Wong took gold in the prenovice men’s singles after a second-place short program. Wong scored 50.76 in the free skate to beat Quebec’s Bennet Toman with an 82.24 final score. Central had petioned in possible medallists and top seed Cedric Bihis at 51 kg and Grade 9 Arsh Chugh at 41 kg, a top-four provincial finalist last year, but neither placed in the top six. If both wrestlers had matched their podium finishes from last season, Central would have gone home with a third consecutive boys’ banner, said head coach Gianni Buono. “If (Bihis) had medalled and had (Chugh) come fourth, we would have won the thing, and both things should have happened,” Buono said. Bihis lost to Burnaby South’s Melvin Arciaga in the quarter-finals. He was later pinned in a match on the back side of the draw. The same thing happened to Chugh, who fell prey to technical errors despite leading on points in both his losses.

Douglas College won a bronze medal in men’s volleyball at the B.C. Colleges’ provincial championships in Kelowna Saturday. TheDouglasRoyalscame back to defeat Vancouver Island University in a marathon 3-2 consolation final 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9. Host University of B.C. Okanagan defeated Columbia Bible College 31 in the men’s gold medal final. Defence played a key factor in the win for Douglas. The Royals outdigged the Mariners and registered twice as many blocks in the back-and-fourth contest. Burnaby freshman libero Jordan Or had a team and career-high 23 of the Royals’ 52 digs in the final. Burnaby North grad Jeff Taylor had eight kills for Douglas in the final. The No 2-seeded Royals were upset 3-0 by the eventual runner-up in their semifinal on Friday. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 9-5 records. Taylor led Douglas in kills with a game-high 15 winners in the loss to CBC. Taylor led the college regular season in kills with 222, averaging 4.44 per game. The Wildcat boys finished with 54 points in one of the tightest finishes in years at the B.C. high school championships in Abbotsford on Saturday. Rick Hansen won the overall boys’ title with 67 points, while aggregate winner, Alberni District, took second place with 58 points. Highly favoured W.J. Mouat and two-time defending runner-up Guildford Park were fourth and fifth, respectively, with 50 and 49 points. The honourable mention New Westminster Hyacks pulled off yet another exciting finish at the Crehan Cup. The Hyacks, unranked for much of the B.C. AAA high school girls’ basketball season, found a way to win when they had to, securing a berth into the upcoming provincial championships with a 58-44 victory over Point Grey in a consolation semifinal at Handsworth Secondary on Friday. New Westminster wound up as the Lower Mainland fourth seed following a 71-50 loss to Carson Graham in the final placing game on Saturday. Earlier at the Mainlands, the Hyacks edged No. 12 Carson Graham 45-41. “When you have a Grade 9, two 10s and two 11s, it’s pretty remarkable,” said Hyack head coach Doug Woodward after Friday’s win. “We’re like a junior team. That’s why we make a lot of mistakes. But it’s how we play.” But there was little to fault the young Hyacks

my team hit key shots,” Sider said. “It’s great when everyone tells you you can’t do it and you prove them wrong.” And New West proved the pundits wrong with youth and heart. Injured guard Jaylen Canton came off the bench with six key second-half points. Ali and Lonergan nailed 10 and eight points, respectively. Grade 9 forward Amanda Zacharuk chipped in with seven points, while McLaughlin contributed a dozen to the win. “I wouldn’t trade anything for this group of girls,” Sider added. “It hasn’t sunk in yet, but we’re going to bring it in the provincials.” Argyle claimed the No. 1 Lower Mainland seed following a 69-64 win over Handsworth in the Crehan Cup final on Saturday. Kitsilano earned a B.C. wild card with a 69-31 win over Point Grey also Saturday. The B.C. AAA championships will take place at Capilano University from March 9 to 12.

The sophomore attack with NCAA Division II Limestone College has already scored 12 goals on just 18 shots in his first three games with the No. 4-ranked program.
