Laneway homes not in pipeline Mayor says city has chosen to focus on density around transit hubs instead Janaya Fuller-Evans

staff reporter

There are no current plans to explore laneway housing as an option for Burnaby. This was council’s message at Monday night’s meeting, when the idea was brought forward by a delegation. Gordon World, who is planning to run with the Burnaby Green Party in the municipal election, spoke to council about the benefits of laneway housing since it was officially approved by Vancouver in July 2009. “The thing that depressed me, assuming I had lane access, is that nothing permits me to build a laneway house in Burnaby,” World told council. He asked the city to look at the idea of introducing laneway housing, mentioning benefits such as eco-density – doubling neighbourhood density by allowing a carriage or laneway house on residential properties – and housing for aging parents, adult children and caregivers. It could be a mortgage helper as well, World added, providing an affordable housing option for those looking to rent a smaller place. Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and Powell River on the Sunshine Coast have introduced or are looking into laneway housing, he pointed out. World acknowledged the city has done a lot to create density. But, in a follow-up phone interview, he said there Density Page 8

Independent living: Robert Ponto and Troy Lisa Hamilton, who are both legally blind, are concerned about cutbacks to home support. The two Burnaby residents say help with cooking and cleaning is important.

Cuts make life harder for blind Janaya Fuller-Evans

Burnaby resident Troy Lisa Hamilton prefers to be independent as much as she can. But Hamilton, who has been legally blind most of her life, does need assistance with some things, particularly cleaning and cooking. “I’m allergic to different foods,” she explained in a phone interview. “Unfortunately, some foods make me ill.” Hamilton also has irritable bowel syndrome and epilepsy, and she has to be

very careful about what she eats, so she needs help in the kitchen. She is receiving income assistance. “I’m better off having home cooked food, knowing what goes into it,” she said, adding that, while there are food delivery services available for those who need them, these services are not ideal for her. She received six hours of home support services per week through Fraser Health up until 2009, when her hours were cut down to four. Home support services are provided by community health workers and include bathing and washing, dressing,

grooming and other personal needs. Hamilton goes to the grocery store and is able to shop on her own, with some assistance at the store, but she needs help making meals. She has difficulty with the digital parts of her stove, which is fortunately an older model and has mostly manual features, she said. She’s afraid she could see more cuts in the near future, she said. “Basically, they do reviews and want to see people do as much as they can for themselves,” she said. “People like to be independent as much as possible, but (in some areas) they just can’t.”

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Candidate takes aim at Chevron Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

On Monday, Green candidate Adrianne Merlo was still collecting the final signatures needed to get on the ballot for Burnaby-Douglas, but she was already taking aim at Burnaby’s Chevron refinery. “That is a huge issue for me,” Merlo said. “Best case scenario is it’s gone, but I don’t think it’s going to happen any time soon.” Merlo would like to see Chevron upgrade to stricter environmental regulations, like those used in California. “(Chevron has) been responsible for repeated environmental leaks and accidents. They are allowed to investigate themselves, it’s a menace to the environment,” she said. Merlo has restored two heritage homes in Burnaby Heights, one of which backed onto the Chevron refinery, but she moved because of the soot and stench. That experience got her more involved in environmental issues.

Leung talks jobs

Conservative candidate Ronald Leung is getting support from former immigration minister Jason Kenney, who attended Leung’s campaign launch recently. Leung has been criticizing the “Ignatieff Liberal coalition with the NDP” for forcing an unnecessary election. Instead, Leung would rather focus on the economy. “Just like other hard-working families in Burnaby, I continue to be concerned about jobs and the economy,” he said in a news release. Leung ran in the 2008 federal election and almost beat NDP incumbent Bill Siksay.

Closing his office

Speaking of Siksay, the longtime Burnaby MP is packing up his office now that the election is on. Last December, Siksay announced he would not run again as he had already spent 25 years in politics. Election Page 10

Outstanding:

Gloria Kravac is a seniors’ advocate and has been selected as this year’s winner of the Kushiro Cup for Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Larry Wright/ burnaby now

One outstanding Burnaby citizen Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Seniors advocate Gloria Kravac has been selected as this year’s winner of the Kushiro Cup for the 2010 Outstanding Citizen of the Year. “I was quite overwhelmed when Coun. (Nick) Volkow called and told me last evening,” she said in a phone interview Friday. “I’m very excited and very honoured.” Volunteering in Burnaby is part of Kravac’s family heritage, she said. “I guess I’ve always done volunteering, ever since my children started school,” she said, adding her husband Nick has volunteered with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, and her mother was also a volunteer in the city. Her granddaughters are now volunteers, too, Kravac added. “Their moms did it, and now they’re picking it up,” she said. The focus of Kravac’s volunteer efforts in recent years has been seniors’ issues. The challenges facing seniors in Burnaby are the same as those facing seniors everywhere, she said. “Poverty is an issue for a lot of single seniors, particularly women,” she said.

Cuts to home support through the healthcare system have also been a problem, as seniors who could live at home with outside help end up in the hospital instead, Kravac said. She has lived in Burnaby for all of her life, except for a 10-year period, she said, and is very fond of the city. “All in all, I think Burnaby is a wonderful place,” Kravac said. “Ms. Kravac has been chosen for this award for her active volunteerism and support for senior citizens in Burnaby,” the report from the Kushiro Cup Selection Committee stated. She was nominated by Anne Howell, and the nomination was supported by Carole Kay, chair of the Voices of Burnaby Seniors’ Task Force, and Shauna Grant, volunteer program coordinator for Citizen Support Services. “Gloria is a kind and gentle person who always takes a genuine interest in what is happening in my life,” Howell is quoted as saying in her nomination of Kravac. “These small acts of kindness are so important to all of us seniors.” Coun. Volkow announced the decision at Burnaby’s council meeting on Monday night.

“That is a wonderful decision,” Mayor Derek Corrigan said. “Congratulations to Gloria and her family.” He added that he looked forward to seeing her at the annual appreciation dinner, when volunteers are recognized for their service to the community. Coun. Colleen Jordan said it is always difficult to pick just one recipient for the award, but that Kravac represents all the volunteers who get little public recognition for what they do, and do so much. Kravac began volunteering with Citizen Support Services in 1995, according to the report. Her work with a group of volunteers, holding a series of forums for seniors, led to the Voices of Burnaby Seniors Task Force. Kravac chaired the task force for a year, and has been co-chair of the taskforce’s transportation subcommittee for two years. The Kushiro Cup will be presented to Kravac at the annual appreciation dinner on May 6. Last year, Chris Hildred won the award for his work as a community policing volunteer and Block Watch area coordinator. jfuller-evans@burnabynow.com twitter.com/janayafe

Cuts: ‘It’s ruining me financially,’ says one legally blind resident She is worried about other people in her complex and how they’re faring since hours were reduced in August 2009, particularly those who are getting older and may need more help. “I just hate to see everyone lose what they need,” she said. “You’ve got to fight tooth and nail with these guys.” Hamilton spoke with Burnaby-Edmonds MLA Raj Chouhan about the issue, which was brought to his attention by her boyfriend, Robert Ponto, who lives in the same complex. Ponto is also legally blind. He was receiving two hours of home support, but that was completely cut on Aug. 15, 2009. “Basically, there are some things I’m not always able to get done,” he said. Ponto has allergies and needs help with housecleaning, which was what his home support worker helped with previously. Now, he has to pay $120 per month for cleaning services from a limited budget. Ponto is also on income assistance. “It’s ruining me financially, more or less,” he said. He has tried to communicate with Fraser Health to come up with a way to resolve the situation but has had no luck, he said. Chouhan contacted Dr. Nigel Murray, president and CEO of Fraser Health, on the couple’s behalf in February. The response he got back suggested Hamilton and Ponto look to other agencies and community resources for help. “They are simply washing their hands of it,” he said in a phone interview. “It’s really disheartening.” It is easy to direct someone in another direction, Chouhan said, but it is not acceptable to ignore the needs of citizens who need help. He doesn’t expect the recent changes in government, with Christy Clark as premier and Michael de Jong as health minister, to improve the situation. “I’m not that hopeful from this government,” he said.

The provincial government is giving Burnaby child-care centres money to help ease the impact of all-day kindergarten. Thirty-four local centres are getting a one-time payment of roughly $45 per licensed space. The government is distributing the money – more than $49,000 in Burnaby – to help them deal with lower enrolment because more five-year-olds are attending full-time kindergarten in 2011. “It’s pretty obvious that now kids are in school full-time we’ve lost money,” said Yvonne Martin of Parkview Children’s Centre, one of the daycares receiving money. Centres don’t need as many staff because kindergarten kids are now in school all day, and daycares have either

lost staff or cut back their hours, Martin said. The government money will help Parkview’s summer program for kids who are on break from school, Martin added. “That way, we don’t’ have to ask the parents for so much money,” she said. The funding for Burnaby is part of a larger government plan, where 900 child-care centres across B.C. will split $1 million. Local MLA Harry Bloy lauded the announcement in a Liberal caucus press release. “This is proof positive that Premier Christy Clark is putting families first. A million dollars to provide extra support for child-care providers around the province will go a long way for B.C. families,” he said.

The bulk of any given candidate’s campaign money comes from the public purse, in the form of a $2 subsidy for every vote their party garnered in the previous election times the number of years that have passed since. The effect is that it is more in the interests of a candidate to curry favour

from voters than to do so from big business or labour. That will change if Harper is given an opportunity to put his plan into action. It is an idea with huge benefits for private interests and the parties that favour them, and absolutely nothing for ordinary Canadians. If there was one reason, and one reason only to place a vote designed to neutralize the Conservatives, this would, in our opinion, merit that vote.

Re: MP fights for ban on shock collars (Burnaby NOW, April 2). I want to applaud Mr. Bill Siksay for taking action towards the prohibition of the use of shock collars. I am not a fanatic animal lover, nor do I own one. To adopt a dog, or any other pet, and then use a shock collar for the purpose of training them, it is a cruel and barbaric action. There are many ways to train animals without using outrageous devices. I agree wholeheartedly that companies should be halted from manufacturing such devices, and retailers from carrying them. Instead, how about making some suitable for humans and use them to train the owners?

SPRING DISCOUNTS For all your SPRING CLEANUPS and RENOVATION NEEDS

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Who is ‘unprincipled’ now? continued from page 6

Harper makes the far-out claim that all the opposition parties are “unprincipled” because they are opposed to his government. Meanwhile in the real world, his government is the first in Canadian history to be found in contempt of Parliament. The Speaker of the House found the government in contempt for two reasons. First, Minister Bev Oda lied to a parliamentary committee about documents that cut funding to a human rights organization that the Conservatives oppose because of ideological differences. Second, the Conservatives refuse to make public the anticipated costs of their irresponsible prison building bonanza and untendered fighter jets that will cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars that we cannot afford. It looks like the Harper government is well on its way to being one of the most unprincipled governments in our history. Murray Martin, Burnaby

Corporate control wrong Dear Editor:

Green Party leader Elizabeth May has been denied a role in a scheduled televised leader’s debate. The reason given is her party does not have representation in Parliament. This decision was made by a media conglomerate of CTV, Global and TVA, all private broadcasting corporations. The fourth member of this media group is the CBC, which is controlled by a Harper appointee. A question that comes to mind is why is the corporate sector controlling the tech-

nicalities of the debate? And why are the four party leaders submitting themselves to be controlled in such a manner by the private sector? Has it got to the point where corporations are so confident they feel free to openly dictate to the leaders of Canada’s political parties? It is the leader’s incapability to stand up to the private sector that resulted in the elimination of the Greens from the debate. The Greens may not have any seats in Parliament, but they field candidates nationwide. In comparison the Bloc is constantly demonstrating a provincial paranoia based on a delusional sense of sovereignty. In reality they are a constant source of national frustration.

Kudos for photo choice

Dear Editor:

I wanted to write to congratulate the Burnaby NOW for having the courage to print – on the front page, no less – the photograph of Mark Angelo of the BCIT Rivers Institute posing with his Ethiopian friends, some of whom are (gasp!) bare-breasted females. That way, you’ll be able to run at least one supportive letter as counterpoint to the howls of outrage you will undoubtedly incur (I hope to be wrong on this!). I also note that the article makes no mention of Angelo being overcome with uncontrollable lust at the sight of these women’s’ appearance, but that he was apparently able to function quite normally and complete his observations despite this brazen display. Good show, Mr. Angelo and Burnaby NOW! Greg DePaco, New Westminster

worried about a potential victory by him on April 17, and why they are rubbing their hands with relish at the prospect of a Dix win. Of course, all polls are simply snapshots of public opinion. That opinion can swiftly change. Farnworth’s personal popularity could sour with people once more scrutiny is paid to his leadership and his party’s positions. The NDP leadership race has received scant media attention, which means no bad publicity has come their way. And a Dix victory may indeed fire up the party faithful and motivate more voters on the left to come out and vote in numbers not seen previously. Finally, one must con-

sider the move of longtime federal Conservative MP John Cummins to provincial politics. If he breathes life into the moribund B.C. Conservative Party, he may take enough votes away from the B.C. Liberals to allow the NDP to win enough seats to form government even if its popular vote shrinks. A similar outcome occurred in the 1996 election, when Glen Clark won power with fewer votes than the B.C. Liberals because the B.C. Reform party took almost 10 per cent of the votes. And who was a key member of Clark’s strategy team? Adrian Dix. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

NDP: Who should party pick? is how the candidates fare in a head-to-head matchup with Clark on the question of who would make the best premier. Clark has a wide lead over both Dix (44 per cent to 25 per cent for Dix) and Horgan (41 per cent versus 22 per cent). Farnworth trails Clark on this question as well, but the gap is sufficiently narrow (38 per cent for Clark to Farnworth’s 32 per cent) to suggest it would be a competitive contest between the two. Farnworth leads among general voters, NDP voters and even B.C. Liberal voters on every question. That’s why a number of B.C. Liberals have told reporters they are most

City OK’s first festival grant

The annual Gilmore Community School country fair and carnival is the first recipient of Burnaby’s new festival grants program. Gilmore was awarded $3,000 for its annual fair on May 27. The Burnaby Pacific Festival was denied a grant for $100,000 in cash and $70,000 for a rental fee waiver for Deer Lake Park. The large Asian Cultural and Culinary Festival was proposed by the Asian Canadian Special Events Association for this August but did not meet a number

of criteria, according to a report from Burnaby’s parks, recreation and cultural services department. The program has a limit of $50,000 for major events by Burnaby non-profit groups, the report said, and applications must be received for major events eight months in advance. The size and scope of the proposed festival was also a concern. The proposal is being deferred to 2012 for further analysis. www.twitter.com/janayafe

Election: Siksay packs up his office continued from page 3

Siksay managed to get a private member’s bill passed that called for human rights protection for transsexuals and transgender people. The bill was waiting for Senate approval but died on paper when the election was called. Siksay is still not sure what line of work he’ll pursue in the future.

Stewart focuses on HST

New Democrat Burnaby-Douglas candidate Kennedy Stewart is picking up where Siksay left off. The SFU professor has been focusing his campaign on the HST. Stewart predicts local Tory and Liberal candidates will vote to support the HST in B.C.’s June referendum while he’ll vote against it. Stewart is also bringing up the oil tanker ban issue. “This is especially important to us here in Burnaby as we have refineries, pipelines and tanker traffic, and we’ve already suffered from leaks and spills, and worry that more will come,” he said in a news release. “What happens on the north coast affects the south coast. The Conservatives’ plan is to run oil tankers and pipelines through the treacherous north coast, putting our pristine south coast at risk, and this affects Burnaby.” The NDP’s motion to ban oil tanker traffic on B.C.’s northwest coast also died on paper with the election. It narrowly passed with Liberal and Bloc Quebecois support while the

Conservatives opposed. The motion was a response to the Enbridge pipeline project, a proposed stretch of pipes from Alberta to Kitimat, B.C., which would open the area to tanker traffic. Kennedy pointed out that Enbridge CEO Pat Daniel told the media he expects that the Liberals will scrap their plan to ban oil tanker traffic on B.C.’s northwest coast if they are elected.

Liberals host talk at SFU

Liberal candidate Ken Low hosted a talk at SFU with former Liberal MP John McCallum from Ontario. “He’s the expert on the economy, and he gave a talk on the Liberal platform,” Low said. The Liberals are the first party to release their platform, and Low reviewed some of the highlights. One is the “learning passport,” where every post-secondary student gets $1,000 every year for four years. (The figure is $1,500 for low-income students.) There’s another $1 billion promised to help build more quality and affordable child-care centres and employment insurance benefits that would allow people to take time off work to care for gravely ill family members at home. “Our platform is for Canadian people, for Canadian families,” Low said, adding the Liberals would also like to strengthen pensions for seniors. www.twitter.com/JenniferMoreau

Need kids’ stuff? Swap meet set Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Gilmore Community School is hosting a kids’ stuff swap meet this Saturday. The sale will feature 20 to 30 vendors selling quality kids’ clothing, toys, sports equipment and baby items. “This is the first one Gilmore has done in quite a few years,” said Suzanne Sachinidis, one of the organizers. “It’s basically great quality kids’ stuff selling at bargain prices.” Proceeds from the sale go towards the school’s parent advisory council, which is hoping to buy new gym mats for the students. Sachinidis said the par-

ents decided to hold their own sale because some were selling their items at another kids’ stuff swap meet at Bonsor Recreation Complex. This way, they get to invest the profits in their children’s school. Sachinidis encouraged people to come early to get the best items. “This is a chance to get really nice stuff,” she said. People who have things to sell can rent a table for $20. The swap meet is April 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school’s gym at 50 South Gilmore Ave. Admission is by donation, but kids get in for free For more information, call Sachinidis at 604-7900301.

Will Rogers Follies will rope you in Burnaby talent on board as ‘big, brassy, bold’ musical takes to the stage at Massey Theatre this week Julie MacLellan staff reporter

Aaron Lau has a new skill to add to his resumé, thanks to his appearance in an upcoming Royal City Musical Theatre production. And it’s one he’s pretty pleased to acquire. After all, it’s not everyone who gets to list “trick roping” on their CV. “Watching other people do it, it seems so easy, but it’s really not,” he says with a laugh. Lau has acquired a few tricks with the rope for The Will Rogers Follies, which plays April 7 to 24 at Massey Theatre in New Westminster. The Burnaby resident is appearing as one of the Will Rogers Wranglers, the title character’s four right-hand men. Lau notes that director Valerie Easton likes having the performers learn some sort of specialty in connection with the production. Last year, for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, it was cheerleading, for which she brought in a cheerleading coach. This year, a young roper came in from Cloverdale to teach Matt Palmer – who stars as Will Rogers – and the show’s ON STAGE child actors how to What: Royal City do rope tricks. He’s also been in two High School Musical productions with Uncle Randy Productions. Lau, who graduated from Moscrop Secondary in 2000, studied theatre at Capilano College and has been working as an actor since 2005. “I’m happy to be one of those actors who can keep working,” he says. He’ll be appearing alongside two other Burnaby residents, Angela King and Dimitrios Stephanoy, in the production. Easton notes that it’s part of Royal City Musical Theatre’s mandate to provide opportunities for emerging talent – and, in The Will Rogers Follies, she has ample opportunity to show off some of the best young talent around. The Will Rogers Follies, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1991, was written by Peter Stone, with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It tells the story of the famed American

performer – who started in vaudeville, going on to appear in the Ziegfeld Follies and later becoming a star in radio and movies. He was one of the best-known performers of the 1920s and 1930s. “He sort of became the voice of the people during the 1930s,” notes Easton. “He became the voice of hope for people. He was quite an amazing guy.” The musical tells the story of Rogers’ life, unfolding in the style of a Ziegfeld Follies revue. “This is a big, brassy musical, a bold musical, sort of in the 42nd Street style,” Easton says, noting there are 16 Follies girls

and a 12-man chorus for the big production numbers. “The numbers are big and splashy.” Easton is thrilled with the talent that’s been assembled for the production. Palmer, she notes, is a familiar face in musical theatre, having appeared at the Vancouver Playhouse and the Stanley, among others. “He’s great, a very talented guy,” she says. Other stars include Sara-Jeanne Hosie as Will’s wife, Betty, Laura McNaught as Ziegfeld’s Favourite and Tyson Coady as Will’s father, Clem. Easton says people will also be

impressed by the costumes – designed by Chris Sinosich – and the set, which features a huge staircase that lights up, as well as a ramp that wraps around the orchestra pit. A live, 19-piece orchestra will accompany the show. “The music is fabulous,” Easton says. “It has a great score. … Your toes will be tapping. You’ll be just amazed.” Lau is looking forward to the show opening – but, at the same time, he’s not slowing down on the rest of his projects. He was just chosen as one of the members of the new Metropolis at Metrotown Will Rogers Page 14

Fantastic Mr. Fox: Singer-cellist Kevin Fox is at the Shadbolt Centre for two shows.

Cellist on stage

Acclaimed cellist and singer Kevin Fox is making a return trip to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Fox, who performed to enthusiastic audiences at the Shadbolt in 2009 with a live rendition of his CD Songs for Cello and Voice, is back on April 8 and 9 for the premiere of his third album, Set Right. Fox has been spending the past year writing arrangements for artists such as Justin Bieber and Kathleen Edwards, recording with such performers as Raine Maida and Celine Dion, and touring with stars including Chantal Kreviazuk, Steven Page, Tom Cochrane and Olivia NewtonJohn. In the midst of it all, he has written and recorded Set Right – offering up a somewhat different take on music than his previous two albums. Where both Come Alive and Songs for Cello and Voice were cre-

ated around a particular style of instrumentation, Set Right allows the instrumentation to take on a more supporting role. But his signature instrument, of course, still comes to the forefront. “From songs like the melodic Inside to the pop-driven title track Set Right, Kevin continues to demonstrate his unique approach to the use of cello in the pop song,” a press release says. “Fans of Kevin’s one-of-a-kind style of reinterpreting popular songs by other artists using only his cello, looping pedal and voice will not be disappointed.” The album includes two covers: Joni Mitchell’s River and Paul Simon’s Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes. Kevin Fox is on stage April 8 and 9 at the Shadbolt’s Studio Theatre. Both shows start at 8 p.m. Call 604-205-3000 or see www.shadboltcentre.com.

Glee Club, after live callbacks at the shopping centre on March 26, and will be performing throughout the summer as part of that group. He’s also made callbacks for Theatre Under the Stars again, and, in what’s left of his time, he’s working towards setting up his own production company. “You can’t always wait for production companies to do the show you

want to do,” he points out. With his own company, Intimate Theatre Productions, he hopes to stage musicals for small casts – six to eight actors or fewer. “I find the musicality of it all is an extremely important part of musical theatre,” he says, noting that, with a small cast, “the music itself is extraimportant.” He’s hoping the company’s first show will be in October of this year.

Handi comes to Burnaby Heights By Janaya Fuller-Evans The Heights Reporter

Par Maroke was fascinated by cooking from a young age. “When I was little, I learned from my mother,” he says while sitting in his new Handi restaurant location in The Heights. It was interesting to watch the different spices getting mixed together to make tasty food, Par says. He told his mother he wanted to be a chef, but she told him to go to school first. He took business courses at Douglas College, which has helped him in his career as a restaurateur. Par is now helping his brother-in-law, Dileep Mutti, enter the restaurant business with Handi restaurant in North Burnaby.

“He said, Paaji (elder brother), I want to learn about Indian cooking,” Par says, “and I told him the kitchen was the place to start.” The two are partners in the new venture, and Par’s younger brother Vishad is also working at the restaurant, located at 4544 Hastings St. Par, who moved to Vancouver from India with his family in 1993, learned the business from his older brother and uncle, he says. Par first partnered with his older brother, Amar, to open Masala restaurant on Dunbar Street in Vancouver in 2001. It was an Indian, Greek and Italian fusion restaurant. The brothers opened their first Handi location in West Vancouver, and the Dunbar location is now part of the Handi chain. Handi received a Best of the City Award in 2009.

The concept behind the restaurant is Indian cuisine in a fine dining setting, with unique spice mixtures and recipes, so that the food isn’t like other establishments, Par says. His chef, Girish Prasad, is from a five-star restaurant in India, he adds. The newest location in Burnaby Heights opened on March 4, and Par says he is already getting a good response from the neighbourhood. “For the past two or three weeks, I’ve noticed people are quite happy to see us here,” he says. Some of Par’s regular customers from Handi in West Vancouver live in the area, he adds, and were glad to have the restaurant come to them. Par and Dileep studied the area and decided that, as Continued on page 19

a booming neighbourhood, it would be an ideal location. In fact, Par says, it is very similar to the Dunbar neighbourhood in Vancouver where his first restaurant is located, with a theatre just across the street and the community centre a few blocks away. Par hopes to continue expanding, and is looking at Port Coquitlam for his next location. Handi is open seven days a week, between 11:30 a.m. and 10 p.m., at 4544 Hastings St. For more information, go to www.handicuisine.com.

Getting to know pepper ON COOKING

M

Chef Dez

any people would assume that the most used spice is salt. However, salt is actually a mineral, not a spice. This leaves its sidekick, pepper, in the lead for the number 1 position. Peppercorns as we know them, are the dried result of the piper nigrum berry and have been harvested for thousands of years. In ancient times the value of this pungent spice was elevated to the degree of being used as trading barter much like currency. The four most popular types of peppercorns that dominate our current food markets are black, white, green and pink. Black peppercorns are the most prevalent and the least expensive. They are produced by harvesting

the berries before they are fully ripe and drying them. The drying process is what gives them their black hard wrinkled appearance and texture. These are not only the most popular but also the most pungent of the varieties. The best flavour and aroma is obtained by freshly grinding them directly on or in the dish you are preparing. Preground spices always lose their freshness and ability to season as time passes. White peppercorns are derived from the same type of berries that the black peppercorns come from, however, they are allowed to mature before harvesting. They are then either soaked or washed in water to remove the outer shell, which produces a white peppercorn with a milder taste. They are frequently utilized to season white sauces. Green peppercorns are one of my ultimate favourites in sauces. These peppercorns are harvested when they are still very immature, and either dried

or preserved in brine. They offer a more natural temperate flavour, and when brined are very soft and can be eaten whole. These are great for transforming ordinary gravy into a gourmet peppercorn sauce with the help of a jigger of brandy or wine. The dried green peppercorns can be rehydrated to make them pliable to accomplish this same task. They can also be mashed into a paste. Pink peppercorns are not actually peppercorns in the same definition as referred to in the abovementioned examples. They are berries that look similar to the piper nigrum berry but are sweeter, milder, and more aromatic. They can ripen to even a dark red in colour before harvesting. These are great in delicately flavoured recipes. In light of all the choices you have, it should be apparent that pepper is nothing to sneeze at. Learn to see the world fully HEALTHWISE

Dr. Davidicus Wong

W

e need two eyes to see fully. Though we can get by perfectly well with monocular vision, two eyes together give us the full depth of vision. When my patients with myopia (needing glasses for distance vision) become presbyopic (needing reading glasses), they sometimes choose to use a weaker lens for one eye. So instead of bifocals, they will have monocular distance and near vision. Early fatherhood was a spiritual “eye opener” for me. The moment my first son was born, I saw the

world in a different way – through his eyes. Playing, teaching and growing with my three children in their early years opened my grownup eyes to a limitless vision of my world and our future. Through the eyes of a young child, the world is forever new, wide and wonderful. There is something new around every corner and in every moment. Life is one adventure after another. And those adventures are not hard to find – in a trip to the market, a walk in the park or a drive across town. There is wonder in the mundane: the shapes of clouds, the movements of an ant and the whirlpool in a flushed toilet bowl. Joy is found in life’s little nuisances: puddles of rain, a heavy snowfall and a pile of leaves. And love is found in the

arms of a mom and dad who accept and embrace all of you and love you just the way you are. As we grow up and grow busy, we become short- and long-sighted. We see trees and streets, people and places differently. We sometimes don’t see them at all. But if we’re lucky to live long enough and to grow with the experience of life, we can regain the eye of a child and discover the eye of an elder. The perspective of life lived promises – though doesn’t guarantee – wisdom. The eyes of wise elders see themselves and their past in the drama of youth and the stages of life around them. They see that many things have changed but the essentials remain the same. The wise elder knows that our days are numbered and the wonder, joy

and love must be appreciated today. Each moment is enjoyed as it is. Each day seized and let go. The eye of the elder can see the true nature of things – what has value and what does not. They can see what is worth holding and what we must let go. We need two eyes to see fully. This week, see your world with both eyes. Look at others, yourself and your life with the wonder of a child and the wisdom of an elder. Live each day as if it was your first and your last, and treat the people you love accordingly. Dr. Davidicus Wong writes regularly for this paper. You can find his daily insights into living a happier life at http://davidicuswong. wordpress.com, www. facebook.com/davidicus. wong and www.twitter.com/ drdavidicuswong.

Midget Giants break new ground Last B.C. to win cup was BWC Travellers in 1982 Tom Berridge sports editor

The Northwest Giants are going where few B.C. midget hockey teams have dared to tread. The Burnaby-based major midget hockey team earned the right to represent the B.C./Alberta Pacific region at the Telus Cup national midget hockey championships, following a 3-1 victory over the Red Deer Optimist Rebels at the Burnaby Winter Club Saturday. The Giants opened the best-of-three regional final series with a 7-2 win at home on Friday. The three-time defending B.C. major midget playoff champions then swept the Alberta league winners in two straight games to become just the second-ever team from Burnaby to make it to the national midget championships. The Burnaby Winter Club Travellers, which included National Hockey League great Cliff Ronning in the lineup, is the only B.C. team to capture the gold medal at the midget championships, winning a then-Air Canada Cup national title in 1982. The Travellers also won a bronze medal at the midget nationals in 1980. An earlier Northwest Giants team under head coach Grant Kerr made it to the Telus Cup as the Pacific region representative when championship tournament host Red Deer beat the B.C. team in the regional final series in 2007. What a rush: Alex Roberts, seen with puck in earlier playoff game against Greater Vancouver, scored the first goal for the Northwest Giants in 3-1 victory over Alberta champion Red Deer Rebels on Saturday. but shut out by its Alberta counterparts when it comes to representing the region at the nationals. Host North Kamloops Lions was an exception in 1996, earning a bronze medal. “I knew (Red Deer) was going to be a bit tougher and they were. We needed a couple of openings to let our stars shine and they did,” said first-year Giants head coach Todd Harkins, who had an 11-year pro career, including NHL stints with the Calgary Flames and the Hartford Whalers in the 1990s. After a scoreless opening frame, Alex Roberts

of Burnaby got the home team on the scoresheet first, finishing off a super rush up ice by Sean Lan that resulted in a juicy rebound in front of the net. Roberts wristed the puck from in front by Red Deer goalie Tanner Jaillet into a gaping net at 6:46 of the second period. Five minutes later, series MVP Alex Kerfoot made it 2-0 on a power play, finishing off a pretty tic-tac-toe from the right faceoff circle, whipping a cross-ice passing play from Cam Marks and Joseph Carvalho of Burnaby into the net. Kerfoot and linemate

Sam Reinhart also teamed up on the final goal of the night that ended Alberta’s long reign in the regional series after a desperate Rebel club got one goal back late in the second period. Following a late thirdperiod faceoff in their own zone, Kerfoot feathered a neat pass up ice to Reinhart, who went in alone to score into an empty net with 27.6 seconds left on the clock. “We have a pretty special group here, we all want the same thing,” said Kerfoot after the game. “(Red Deer) was on the verge of losing and they

are a great team. We had to keep pushing, but it came out our way at the end. I was glad to get it done in regulation.” The difference in the third period was Giants goalie and player of the game Daniel Cotton, who kicked out all 11 Rebel shots in the final frame. “The team played great. They made it easy for me. It really was a team effort,” said Cotton. Cotton stopped 23 shots for perhaps the biggest win of his young career. STM teen earns world junior golf qualifying spot Tom Berridge sports editor

St. Thomas More Collegiate junior Kevin Vigna shot the daylights out of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour prodigy series at Morgan Creek Golf Course last weekend. The 15-year-old Burnaby independent school student carded a two day, six-under-par 138 to win the boy’s 14 to 16 age division and post the best overall score among a full field of 78 young golfers at the South Surrey course April 2

and 3. Vigna, who shares two previous B.C. AA high school golf titles with STM, carded a four-under 68 on the par-72, 6,638-yard Morgan Creek course on the opening day, tying him with defending champion Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows for the lead. Vigna and Kwon played together in the final round and were still tied after the front nine. Kwon was one-up heading to the final hole after both teens birdied the par-5 17th. With Kwon on the green, and

Vigna on the fringe with a 15-yard uphill chip, it was crunch time for the Coquitlam golfer. “I knew I had to make a birdie,” Vigna said. “(Kwon) came up to me and said, ‘You got to chip it in to tie,’ in a nice way, to boost me up. I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll try.’ Vigna holed out his birdie attempt to finish with a twounder-par 70. Kwon missed his downhill putt and wound up with a 71, one shot back. “I wanted to play off, but it was hard to see him three-putt,” Vigna

added. With the win, Vigna is eligible for the Future Collegiate World Tour national championships in Florida or a qualifying spot at the U.S. Junior sectionals. He also earned a chance to qualify for the Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California. Closer to home, Vigna has his eye on qualifying for the Canadian junior championships this season, and coming in the top 10 at the B.C. juvenile tournament. Vigna also has a goal of a top25 finish at the CN Futurelinks.

The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins will be in Winnipeg this Thursday for a second crack in as many years at a third Western Canada bantam hockey championship banner. The bantam AAA Bruins earned their second straight appearance at the westerns following a 6-3 win over the host Abbotsford Hawks at the recent provincials. The last time, the winter club competed for a western title in Winnipeg, the Bruins came away with the banner in 2007 against this year’s hosts the Winnipeg Sharks. Last year, Burnaby hosted the championships, which was won by the Winnipeg Monarchs over the Calgary Bisons in a third period of overtime. Also taking part from Manitoba will be this year’s provincial champion Winnipeg Hawks. The two Manitoba teams will open the five-team Western championships on Thursday. Alberta will be represented by the AAA league runner-up and playoff champion SSAC Southgate Lions, which took the AAA provincial series 3-1 over last year’s western Canadian runner-up and overall points leader, Calgary Bisons. The Lions will face off against the Saskatchewan league champs Prince Albert Pirates. Prince Albert capped an impressive 42-2-1 regular season, downing the Saskatoon Maniacs in the prairie association’s totalpoint playoff final. BWC takes on the host Sharks in Thursday’s night game. The Bruins then play the Southgate Lions on Friday morning, followed by a game against the Hawks later in the evening. The B.C. champs face Prince Albert in their only game on Saturday. BWC teams have won a Western Canada banner in 2002 and again in 2007, with arguably more starstudded teams. BWC Page 28

SFU SPORTS

Middle distance runners dominate at Mondor meet A change in venue for the Emily Mondor Invitational track meet did not slow down Simon Fraser University runners. Women’s athlete of the year, Helen Crofts, won the women’s metric quarter mile at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford on Saturday. Crofts led a Clan charge to the finish line, beating out SFU teammates Jessica Smith, Brianna Kane and Kendra Viney, who finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Crofts clocked a winning 56.76 lap. The meet was moved from Burnaby Mountain to the Fraser Valley late last week. The Clan women also cleaned up in the 800 metres with five runners finishing in the top six. Freshman Lindsay Butterworth won the race in a time of 2:15.28, ahead of teammates Michaela Kane, Emma Vogt of Burnaby, Olivia Brennan and Sarah Sawatsky, who finished third through sixth. Kimberley Doerkson placed third in the women’s 5,000m. Senior Andrew Boss won the men’s 400m in a time of 48.81. Brett Montrose placed fourth, coming home in a time just over 50 seconds. Ryan Brockerville ran

away with the metric mile, finishing nearly three second seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Adam Reid.

Clan doubled

Simon Fraser University lost both halves of a women’s softball doubleheader to No. 4-ranked California State University – San Marcos on Saturday. The Clan women fell 7-2 in the opener before dropping the later game 4-3. Carly Lepoutre clubbed a leadoff triple to begin the third inning and came around to score on an error. SFU took a 2-0 lead on Lauren Mew’s run-scoring single in the fourth. But San Marcos answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning, and three more in the sixth. Cara Lukawesky took the loss, going six innings, while walking four batters and striking out only three. In the second game, SFU’s Kelsie Hawkins was handed the loss, allowing all four runs on just seven hits. Burnaby outfielder Brittany Mayers slapped a two-run dinger in the sixth to bring the Clan to within one run of the lead.

Second-year Rebel named WHL player of the month Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was named the Western Hockey League’s player of the month for March. The 17-year-old Red Deer Rebel centre from Burnaby collectd 19 points in his last eight regular season games, scoring 11 times and posting a plus-nine. During that span, Nugent-Hopkins collected points in seven of the eight games, including six multi-point games and four game-winning markers. He posted a seven-game point streak through March, earning seven three-star selections, three of them first-star mentions. Nugent-Hopkins finished fourth overall in WHL regular season scoring with 31 goals and 106 points in 69 games played. The WHL first team all-star finished off the month with points in a four-game sweep of the Edmonton Oil Kings in the first round of playoffs. In the playoffs to date, Nugent-Hopkins has four goals and five assists. The Rebels finished second overall in the WHL Eastern conference with a 48-16-4-4 record and 104 points. Red Deer will take on the winner of the Saskatoon Blades, 4-2 series winner over the Prince Albert Raiders, in their first-round playoff. The Rebels’ best-of-seven Eastern conference semifinal with Saskatoon begins in Red Deer on Friday.

BWC: Medal games to be held on Sunday continued from page 27

But Bruins head coach John Batchelor liked the makeup of this year’s group from Day One. Returning just two players off last year’s championship squad, Cameron Seto and Victor Dombrovskiy, BWC had to overcome stiff competition all season long from both the Kamloops Jardine Blazers and Abbotsford, which upset the regular season champs at the Pacific Coast playdowns. “We had a better feeling this team would answer the bell when it counted,” said Batchelor. “We beat the Saskatchewan team this year, and with two Winnipeg teams as hosts, every game is going to be like playing Kamloops or Abbotsford.” The medal round at the Western Canada bantam championships will be played on Sunday, beginning with the bronze medal matchup against the third- and fourth-placed teams.

Larry Wright/burnaby now

Age and experience: Victor Dombrovskiy, left in white, is one of just two returning players for the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins bantam A1 hockey team. The championship final will follow on April 10

between the two teams with the best overall

record through the roundrobin.

Burnaby swimmer makes national junior team Burnaby’s Mariya Chekanovych was named to the Canadian junior swim team in breaststroke. The 16-year-old Grade 11 Burnaby Central Secondary student earned her spot on the junior national squad following a fifth-place finish in the 200-metre long course breast at the 2011 Canadian world swim trials at Saanich Commonwealth Place pool on March 30. Chekanovych, the youngest swimmer in the A final, finished in a time of 2:29.43, five seconds behind Olympians Annamay Pierse and Martha McCabe, who placed first and second, respectively. following Thursday, finishing 11th overall in a time of 1:09.78. Tianna Rissling, 18, won a spot on the senior national team with a runner-up finish in the 100m breast. Chekanovych, who swims for Simon Fraser Aquatics, was one of three female and four male swimmers from B.C. to make the world junior championships team. The 3rd FINA world junior swim championships will be held in Lima, Peru from Aug. 16 to 21. B.C. also placed 11 swimmers on the senior national team for the 14th FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, China from July 16 through 31.

satisfied with just representing the region at the Telus Cup. “It just hit me that we just swept a really good team in Alberta,” Cotton added. “I think we’re going to go all the way. I think we have a really good shot at it.” So might others in attendance who have witnessed the Giants in past seasons against the best from Alberta. In2007,currentWestern Hockey Leaguers Landon Ferraro, Matt Mackenzie and Clinton Atkinson were a goal away from a bronze medal at the Telus Cup. Current WHL star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins led a talented Giants team that fell in 2-1 in Game 3 to eventual Telus Cup runner-up Calgary Buffaloes at BWC in 2009. Last year, the likes of captain Steven Iacobellis, WHL Edmonton Oil King draft pick Griffin Reinhart

and current NHL draft prospect Destry Straight couldn’t get past Red Deer at the regionals. “I think they finally bought into what I was selling,” said Harkins. “I wasn’t the most talented player, but I worked hard.” And that, along with dedication and commitment, is exactly what Harkins expects from his charges. First-year defenceman Joseph Carvalho is one hard worker he won’t have to convince. “We’re obviously really happy to get (to the Telus Cup), but we’re going to have our eyes on the prize. Everyone said (Red Deer) was bigger, faster and stronger, but we’re just going to keep playing our game. We have faith in our systems. We’re not going to change anything,” Carvalho said. The Telus Cup will take place in St. John’s, Nfld. from April 18 to 24.

Tyler McNeely of Burnaby garnered the first point of his pro hockey career on April Fool’s Day. The former Northeastern University team captain drew an assist for the American Hockey League Bridgeport Sound Tigers in an eventual 3-2 loss to the Springfield Falcons on April 1. A day later, McNeely was named a second star after scoring his first-ever professional league tally for the Tigers early in the third period in a 4-3 win over the Binghampton Senators on Saturday. Later in the frame, McNeely scored his second goal of the period that stood up as the game-winner.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
