he evening before he disappeared, Robert-Jan (Robbie) Planje told Colleen Crook, an old friend of 40 years, that he was afraid to return to his tidy home at Rainbow Estates mobile home park. Just hours earlier, his crackaddicted roommate had been arrested after going into a rage that saw him throw meat and food around the home and at Planje. He hasn’t been seen since. By Tuesday morning, the roommate—who was released Sunday night—was back in police custody and being questioned by homicide investigators as to the whereabouts of Planje. According to Crook, Planje called the roommate his stepson. The roommate is, in fact, a 44-year-old struggling crack addict. Planje— who was secretary of the Gypsy Project, a non-profit that tries to house the homeless—had dated the man’s mother and took his

eno Trevor Hogg got to know a lot of people in Chillliwack but not one of those people truly knew

him. What they do know is that he integrated himself as well or better than most newcomers with no connections do. Some of those who met and worked with Hogg describe him as smooth, accommodating, polite, friendly and congenial. Hogg liked to party and he liked to drink. But he also worked hard and he liked to get things done.

He got to know a lot of people, he made friends and it truly seemed like he wanted to fit in here in the Fraser Valley. But there was another side. One person who knew Hogg says he thought he was a “snake.” Another says he was a “shyster.” The reality is that Hogg had terrible and disturbing secrets, which he did an incredible job of keeping under wraps. “This is the story of a person that came into a community and used people of stature,” said Wayne, the man who knew Hogg best and even let him live in his home for a brief period of time. (Wayne did not want his last name used.)

“He got himself known. Reno Trevor Hogg is the nice guy that can do this and this and this. He had an apartment and a dog. He lived basically a normal life. “Here was somebody that fooled everybody.” Nearly 10 years after they first met, Wayne found out that Reno Trevor Hogg isn’t and wasn’t Reno Trevor Hogg. The enigmatic and charismatic guy he knew was actually George Mitchell Allgood, an American citizen who, 27 years ago, tied up a 71-year-old man in his own home and beat him to death with a shovel in Baltimore, Md. Twenty-three years after that horrific crime, on July 15, 2006, 40-

year-old Susan Reinhardt and 43year-old David Ristow were asleep together in a Saskatoon home at about 1:15 a.m. when they were hit with blasts from a shotgun. Ristow survived but Reinhardt—Allgood’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child—died. In a Saskatoon courtroom this week, at the conclusion of a fourday preliminary hearing, Judge Barry Singer ruled that the Crown had presented enough evidence for Allgood to stand trial for first degree murder and attempted murder. hilliwack teenager Trevor Thornley received a birthday gift unlike any other from his mother this year: A lifesaving kidney. Colleen Thornley didn’t think twice about donating her kidney when doctors told her that her son needed one as soon as possible. Trevor, who turned 18 a few weeks ago while in hospital waiting to receive his mother’s kidney, has battled kidney disease since he born. In January, his disease took a turn for the worse. Doctors told the family the news they had been dreading for years: Trevor’s kidneys were failing and he would need a new kidney. “I’m a mom. That’s what moms do—we do we try to fix our kids. If that means giving them a body part, well that’s just what it is,” she said. But she had to go through a battery of blood tests, and it took four months to determine whether she was a suitable donor—a long and arduous wait for a worried mother. Meanwhile, her son was put on dialysis. “It was such a long process and it was hard. He was on dialysis for 10 hours a night. He was at home, thankfully, but that was very difficult for him,” she said. They had hoped to undergo the transplant straight away, but then Trevor caught an infection and they had to wait until Nov. 29 to have the surgery, which took place at two different hospitals. Surgeons removed Colleen Thornley’s kidney at St. Paul’s Hospital and delivered it to the BC Children’s Hospital, where Trevor was staying. While he was at BC Children’s, Tre-

The operation was a success and we are both doing super well,” said Thornley, adding that her son has been so strong his whole life. “He is incredible. He never complains,” she said. Trevor was released from hospital on Saturday, but is staying with his

grandmother in Richmond for another week because he still has to go for more tests to determine the right mix of anti-rejection drugs. He takes about nine different pills a day and will be on medication for the rest of his life. The new kidney is a temporary fix, but with any luck it could last him 20 years, Thornley said. Last summer, Trevor attended a

camp for kids with the same disease, called Camp for Kidney Kids at Zajac Ranch. The eight-day camp, partly supported by The Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund, has existed for seven years, going from seven kids in the first year to 54 kids last summer. It takes youth from across the spectrum of kidney disease—those in the early stages, those in dialysis, and those who have had transplants. It allows the kids to be with others who fully understand the issues they deal with daily. “[It was] a lot of fun, a lot of activities, friendly people,” said Thornley, who was on dialysis at the camp last summer. “There seems to always be something special for evening time. One time we had a talent show. Another time we had a dance.” Trevor hopes one day to be an actor. For the talent show, he did a standup comedy sketch. Then he watched his dialysis nurse lip sync. Having a camp for kids with kidney disease is good. “It’s really good you get them all together,” he said. “Some of them would have a hard time [at a regular camp]. Here everyone has an illness, everyone is sick, no one is going to laugh at you or anything.” As clinical co-ordinator of the renal unit at BC Children’s Hospital, Lori Paille thought she knew the kids with kidney disease who regularly showed up in her unit. That is, until she started volunteering at the camp. There, Paille saw her patients climbing the ropes course, laughing with others in the talent show. “We see them in a totally different light,” she says. “You don’t realize that some of them have beautiful singing voices, for instance.”

In 1948 the bank moved into a new building, a triangular shaped branch that still stands today at the apex of a lot bounded by Yale and Young Roads and Princess Ave. The branch was re-branded to CIBC in June 1961, when The Commerce and the Imperial Bank of Canada merged to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). As business grew, the branch needed to expand but it was con"ned within the triangular lot. More Consequences of the New Drinking and Driving Laws Two months into the new anti-drinkingand-driving ‘regime’ in British Columbia and the perhaps ‘unintended consequences’ continue to unfold. In midNovember, the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police traffic-safety committee recalled 2,200 roadside breathalyzer devices. Reportedly, lab tests found that the devices’ Cedric Hughes margin of error meant they could generate a ‘warn’ reading for a blood alcohol content lower than the new .05 threshold.

Chilliwack man’s life-saving efforts earn hero’s honour

hree Fraser Valley residents who saved the life of a friend and work colleague have been awarded a special Certificate of Commendation from the Governor General of Canada. Scott Melenchuk, 37, of Chilliwack, Andrea Kellner, 33, of Abbotsford and Kevin Douglas, 21, of Langley received the award for saving the life of Bobby Yanciw, 37, from a rock quarry near Peace River, Alta. on July 26, 2009. “I think it’s phenomenal,” said Herb Schmidt, PNR RailWorks Pacific Region manager, who nominated the trio for the award. “I was hoping they were going to be recognized for a very special deed.” The four, who all work for Abbotsfordbased PNR RailWorks, were on an assignment for CN Rail in Alberta and on a day off, went swimming in a nearby rock quarry when Yanciw went missing. “We were looking frantically and couldn’t find him,” said Melenchuk. “And I thought he was in there, so I just kept going.” Melenchuk dove to the bottom of the quarry six times. His persistence and tenacity paid off. “On the sixth dive when I reached the

bottom to push off to come back up for air, I felt something and it was Bobby’s hand,” said Melenchuk. “I grabbed him and brought him up with me.” Kellner and Douglas helped pull the lifeless body out of the water and up a steep embankment. “He had already turned colour, he was purple,” said Melenchuk, who estimates his friend was under the water anywhere from eight to 15 minutes. Melenchuk began performing CPR with the help of Douglas while Kellner called 911, giving accurate instructions for the paramedics. “I started performing CPR and I kept doing it until the paramedics showed up,” Melenchuk said. “I started to get shallow breathing.” Yanciw was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton where he was kept for more than a month. “His organs were shutting down and he had extreme damage to his lungs and they actually didn’t expect him to live,” said Schmidt. But Yanciw has had a virtual full recovery and in June was back working with the others. “He’s full of life again and a happy guy,” said Douglas.

The above-noted lawyers also allege that while impaired driving charges are being laid where a serious crash has resulted or where the Barrister & Solicitor driver has an impaired driving record, “if you blow ‘fail,’ that’s it. ...People suspected of being impaired are not being taken to the police station for a breathalyzer and charged criminally.” This amounts, they say, to extremely severe penalties for drivers who are only slightly over the limit but a “huge break’ for drivers who are drunk. The reported RCMP response: Drivers who display “gross symptoms of impairment” are still being arrested and breathalyzed. A disturbing side bar to the allegation that only injured or injuring “drunk drivers” are now being charged criminally is a recently published study in the B.C. Medical Journal showing that because of the legal difficulties inherent in police attempting to collect blood alcohol evidence from injured impaired drivers, “only seven to 11 per cent of them are eventually convicted of impaired driving.”

More recently, a number of Vancouver criminal lawyers observed, and Crown Counsel has confirmed, that since September 20th, the number of impaired driving charges has dropped by up to 90 per cent. They said that the new laws have effectively decriminalized impaired driving, and made an administrative process out of (what was) a criminal process and thereby rid impaired drivers of the stigma of a criminal record.

The medical study also reported that nearly one third of the impaired drivers involved in BC crashes from 1999 to 2003, after having killed or maimed, went on to do so again.

These critics of the new ‘process’ also said that while the burden on the court system has been reduced, the government is “sidestepping the real issue of court backlogs-a shortage of judges and

The recall, which has been completed, involved re-adjusting the devices from .05 to .06 “out of an abundance of caution,” given the “greater emphasis put on the evidence they produce....” Those who may have been wrongly caught by this too wide margin of error may have little recourse. Left behind a web of lies and deception

Fooled everyone The man known in Chilliwack as Trevor made many connections and made many small inroads in the community. At one time, he worked at Sto:lo Nation indirectly under the oversight of now-mayor of Mission James Atebe. Before Steven and Gwen Point were the Lieutenant Governor and Chatelaine of British Columbia, Allgood worked with Gwen and others on powwows. Through Sto:lo Nation, Allgood worked with ICBC road safety co-ordinator and retired RCMP officer Mike Weightman making a road safety DVD and on powwow sponsorship. But after years of living a lie in Chilliwack, teetering on the brink of as normal a life as possible, Allgood is now in custody facing charges that will put him away for a very long time if he is found guilty. More questions than answers Back in 1983, Allgood was a former Navy cook in Baltimore when he tied up a 71-year-old man in his own home and beat him to death with a shovel. The victim was referred to as Allgood’s godfather, someone who had sheltered him and his mother when he was a teenager, according to Baltimore Sun crime reporter Peter Hermann. In October 1984, Allgood pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years. “This was a very brutal beating that resulted in the death of an elderly gentleman who lived by himself,” Warren Brown, the state attorney who put Allgood behind bars, told the CBC in January of this year. But that conviction would be overturned three years later in a precedent-setting case, according to Hermann. “His conviction was overturned, with his attorneys saying that a statement made as part of a plea bargain was used against him at trial after the state’s offer was withdrawn,” Hermann wrote on his blog on Jan. 13. Allgood again pleaded guilty and received 30 years in prison, according to Hermann, and it was unclear when he was released. It was reported Allgood was 23 at the time of the murder, but according to Saskatchewan police, George Mitchell Allgood was born Feb. 24, 1964 meaning he was either 18 or 19 when he killed in 1983. And many other questions from this period remain: How long did he spend in jail? Who is Reno Trevor Hogg? How did Allgood get or create this identity? And how exactly did he get into Canada? That’s a question many people have, including the man that put him away the first time.

Former Skowkale chief Mark Point, Steven’s brother, said he didn’t remember Allgood at all. Sto:lo Nation president Joe Hall said he didn’t remember him either, none of which is surprising since Allgood w a s a n e n t r y- l e v e l e m p l oye e, according to sources. One connection he did make through his work at Sto:lo Nation was with Susan Reinhardt, who was an employee of Xyolhemeylh Child and Family Services. The two would eventually have a child together, “a beautiful little boy,” according to the Sto:lo Nation employee. Wayne said he met Reinhardt one time when she came by his house with the boy. He said on another occasion Allgood brought the boy over and they went swimming in his pool. Looking back at all the lies Wayne now realizes he was faced with, Allgood and his son having fun in the pool was one truly genuine moment. “He was happy,” Wayne said.

Things begin to unravel In the early 2000s, Wayne ran an online television station called Valley Television, and Allgood always wanted to be involved. In particular, Allgood wanted to be a host, so Wayne created a show for him called Urban Beat. In the first and only episode, Allgood interviewed U.S. rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot who was performing at the old Area 51 nightclub, now Industry. “He always wanted to do what I did,” Wayne said. So Wayne let Allgood shoot video for him on jobs and get involved in his business, if only in small and unpaid ways. In the years leading up to 2006, Allgood lived a lie in Chilliwack getting to know more and more people, telling more and more stories, but creating a bit of a new history that was real. All the while he was employed at Sto:lo Nation at a job that would not last. His “behaviour” was being documented by his boss to ensure when he was eventually fired he wouldn’t claim wrongful dismissal. George Mitchell Allgood lived in Chilliwack as Reno Trevor Hogg and would increasingly push the envelope in his life with a fictitious identity. The rich just getting richer Y

ou’ve got to have money to make money. The latest study came out recently saying that the rich are getting richer, and getting richer faster, than they ever have before in Canadian history. And why shouldn’t they? The rich are not like you and me. They live in a special place where they are shielded from the cares and woes of the modern world. For a normal person, bankruptcy and crushing levels of debt are a problem. To a rich person, they are an inconvenience. Donald Trump has seen several of his businesses go bankrupt. He once personally owed about $900 million of debt, enough to buy yourself a small central Asian dictatorship. Is he currently living in a used fifthwheel in New Jersey, eating government cheese? Of course not. Like a car company, he has become too big to fail. His companies rebuilt, his debts slowly paid off, and at more generous terms than you or I will get if we fall behind in the rent or mortgage. No matter how far a really rich person falls, they never quite fall back down to being “normal.” Jailbirds Martha Stewart and Conrad Black are not going to be bagging groceries to make ends meet. Your average ex-con doesn’t have book deals and wealthy friends to fall back on. It is possible to become rich. You need to work hard, usually, and

Be Our Guest you also need a big, heaping serving of luck. Self-made millionaires often talk about how anyone could do what they did, if they had the grit and determination. (They seldom talk about the luck part.) But logic is against them. You can’t build a business without employees. If everyone headed off to become an entrepreneur, there would be no one to hire to fill all those vital but dull jobs on the assembly line, driving the trucks, answering the phones, or keeping the books. Don’t think about putting all your money into the stock market, either. If everyone invests their cash in the markets, it causes a boom and then a massive crash. A Depression-era proverb puts it simply: you know it’s time to get out of the market when the shoeshine boy is giving you investment tips. Economists like Milton Friedman have gone even farther to ratify the idea that not everyone can be rich. They believe that a certain number of unemployed people are necessary for the health of the economy (read: the health of the

economy as seen from a mansion). If employment rises above a certain level, this argument goes, inflation gets cranked up and keeps on cranking. Inflation destroys wealth, ergo, we need to have some unemployed people. So, for the benefit of those who do have jobs and savings and stocks, some people must be kept miserable. This kind of thinking leads to governments that try to keep unemployment low—but not too low. Not everyone can be rich. And our current system requires that not only must there be working stiffs, there must be people who are genuinely poverty-stricken. The unemployed, the underemployed, the people working for minimum wage and going to the food bank because their pay cheque can’t cover both rent and food—they’re there by design as much as by accident. They keep wages low, by providing a threat to workers higher up the food chain. Pour encourager les autres, as they say. So the rich will keep getting richer. The poor may not get much poorer. There’s no real profit in having people in rags begging on street corners. They’ll scrape by, they’ll be allowed to avoid starvation. or the past few weeks, the word WikiLeaks has been inescapable in the news. Politicians and diplomats have been scrambling to either apologize for the information, or to vilify the leaker. Recently, we had a major Canadian political operative, a former advisor to PM Stephen Harper, call for Julian Assange, the public face of WikiLeaks, to be assassinated. On live television. Tom Flanagan later apologized, and said he was a joking. While there is plenty in the WikiLeaks data trove to make us question institutions, one person has come off quite well. Canadian diplomat William Crosbie apparently vented his feelings about the government of Afghanistan in discussions with his U.S. counterpart. Crosbie called the Afghan elections rigged, said the international community shouldn’t go along with it, and said western nations must be “prepared for a confrontation” with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. After this became public, Crosbie offered to resign. Resign? Why should he resign for forcefully arguing for free and fair elections? For hoping that Canada and its allies will stand up to our supposed Afghan friends over corruption, nepotism, and tyranny? Resign? We should promote this guy! One of the best decisions Harper has made was to stand behind Crosbie. A total of 153 Canadian soldiers have died in Afghanistan, along with a reporter and a diplomat. The Canadian Forces are in Afghanistan for the ostensible purpose of bringing democracy, stability, and freedom, especially for that country’s oftenvictimized women and girls. That Crosbie worries about corruption is a good thing. That Canadian diplomats want to stand up for democracy is a good thing. Crosbie clearly wants the wretched mess that the Afghan war has been to count for something. If nothing else, WikiLeaks has shown that, behind the “diplomatic” language, at least one diplomat is guided by ethics.

You mentioned that your mother was killed by a sober driver, a study shows that 23 per cent of accidents are caused by drinking drivers; that means that 77 per cent of accidents are caused by people who can’t drive properly and drink tea, coffee, coke or orange juice. Maybe you should watch out for them. Who causes death and injury? It is not the person driving responsibly at 50 km/hr on the way home from a dinner party, it is the drunk irresponsible person

Light needs to be changed Editor: Re: Letter of Dec.14 (Robert Anstey) who narrowly escaped getting squished at the Topaz and Knight Road crossing. Good for you, Robert. We have occasion to try to beat the time allowed at the Topaz and Luckakuck crossing and have failed miserably for the same reason. Halfway across, the signal changes from the “Walk” signal to the big red hand. We then duck the right turners from Luckakuck, and the left turners from Topaz by looking both ways at the same time and hoping like hell that the drivers see us in time. Keeping the magic alive

Editor: I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the staff at the Rosedale Post Office. Last week I brought in my nine-year-old son’s letter to Santa, to be mailed to the “North Pole.” The lady who helped and I talked about the stickers on the envelope and how excited my son was about his letter. A few days later, he got his letter from Santa. But also in the mail, addressed to us, his parents, was his original letter to Santa, for us to keep as a keep sake momento. I thought this was so thoughful and very unexpected. When our son opened his letter from Santa, it was the regular “Santa letter,” but on the bottom of the letter was a personalized note to our son as well. It was written to him, even by his nickname and mentioned his gifts he would like and talked about other items my son had written in his letter to Santa. It answered some of his questions and more. He was so excited to get this letter, and it really warmed our hearts. Our son is nine this year, he is our youngest and this will probably be the last year he totally “believes,” so this was extra special to us as well. Editor: Re: The letter I sent into your newspaper (Dec. 7) and the response by Edith Wallace (Dec. 10), who after reading my letter, which was “edited,” leaving out the point I was trying to put out to the driving public, totally made me look like I condoned and promoted drunk driving. My original article was just the opposite. My point was that I want to see stiffer penalties for drunk driving. I was questioning the allowable amount of alcohol one could consume and/or distinquishing what is the limit of being impaired. A responsible person having a drink or two should not have to be subjected to the stiff new laws and fines that are being imposed on one driving at .05 or .08, but severe punishment to those driving irresponsible and drunk. Edith delivered a scathing attack on me personally, that I would drive impaired with children in the car, and that I was a staggering, drunken idiot and possibly an alcoholic, drinking a half a bottle of vodka at 8 a.m. before driving the children to school, staggering and tripping over the white line as I walked around the car to open the door. Edith, you must have an anger problem and a vivid imagination of the average John Q. Public—and especially me. Maybe you should think about our law enforcement officers, lawyers and judges, and corporate executives who, by the way, do stop off at a bar after work or go out for dinner and enjoy a drink or two, I’m sure they would drive home in a proper manner as well as any other responsible citizen. he University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) received a $10 million boost from the provincial government on Thursday to expand and renovate at Canada Education Park in Chilliwack. Chilliwack MLA John Les and ChilliwackHope MLA Barry Penner were at the UFV Trades and Technology Centre along with UFV executives, faculty, staff and students to announce the funds from the Ministry of Science and Universities. “This is part of an overall commitment that we made back in 2003 when the university acquired the 85 acres,” Les told the Times after the announcement. “The existing campus was to be completely moved over to the new campus here in Canada Education Park so we made several investments.” The $10 million will go towards the $40million campus development project expected to be completed by fall 2011. The classrooms in the new building should be ready for occupancy midway through the 2011/2012 school year, Les said.

“This is another building block in the educational foundation for our community and the Fraser Valley,” Penner said. “It’s good to see. This isn’t just for Chilliwack. This will be a regional centre; a provincial resource.” The project will be built to LEED Gold certification and follow the Wood First initiative, according to the ministry. The project includes construction of a multi-purpose building, an aboriginal gathering place, along with renovations to the existing engineering building that was originally part of the Chilliwack Canadian Forces Base. In 2009, the site received $7.2 million in joint federal/provincial infrastructure funding for roads, water and sewer—work that is nearly complete. The new multi-purpose building will be up to 14,000 square metres, and will include wet and dry laboratories, classrooms and study space. Health sciences programs, currently offered at the old North Chilliwack campus, will be transferred to the new space when it is complete. The new building will also house the teacher education program, and expanded Aboriginal access services and programs.

hat if. . . . Those two simple words broach a plethora of possibilities and entice us with dazzling array of options. What if the RRSP or pension fund actually earned interest? What if the Haitian people could find some relief from all the hardships they are being bombarded with? What if Santa was real? “What if” spans the spectrum of imagining and dreaming about the possible, on the one end, to the improbable on the other end— what if the report card had straight “A’s” (possible) to what if there were no more wars, and greed and self-interest were put on the back

What if . . .

What if, in spite of all apparent evidence to the contrary, we nonetheless loved, and gave voice to the voiceless, and listened and forgave, and poured out grace? “What if” can also be the precursor to regrets, which quickly accumulate like sand in the desert. What if I had invested in land in Whistler in 1978; what if I had stayed with my husband or wife; what if I had spent more time with my children when they were younger; what if I had loved extravagantly?

What if this time I did not explode in rage at the confrontation, and instead of avoiding the conversation, I engaged in honest dialogue? The song “One of us” asks some sobering questions that may surface more at this time of year. I quote parts of it: “If God had a name what would it be? And would you call it to his face? If you were faced with him in all his glory what would you ask if you had just one question? Yeah, Yeah, God is great. Yeah, Yeah, God is good. What if God was one of us?” This time of year, perhaps, we

You win some, you lose some. That cliché has never been truer than with the Chilliwack Bruins. After kicking off their Alberta road trip with back-to-back wins last weekend in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, the Bruins lost Tuesday in Calgary and Wednesday in Red Deer. The up-and-down road trip is a microcosm of a season that, nearly halfway through, has been notable only for its unpredictability. The Bruins have not won three games in a row all season. They’ve only dropped three straight once, back in early November. You won’t find a pattern in this week’s losses, except for an inability to score. Lucas Gore stopped 54 Red Deer Rebel shots Wednesday and it still wasn’t enough as the Bruins could only muster a single goal—and Steven Hodges’ marker came with just nine seconds left in the game. After sitting on the bench for two straight starts by Braden Gamble, Gore perhaps had something to prove. Unfortunately, his effort was wasted as the Bruins offence sputtered and failed to capitalize on five power play opportunities, as they fell 3-1 to the Rebels. One reason may be a loss of personnel. While Ryan Howse drew back into the lineup on Tuesday, Roman Horak and Robin Soudek were missing in action, having embarked on their own World Junior adventure. That, combined with the ongoing absence of power play quarterback Brandon Manning, who is out with a groin injury, did no favours

to the Bruins’ sputtering man advantage. The power play remains in top spot in the Western Hockey League despite connecting on just two of its last 16 opportunities. While the results have been erratic, the Bruins have shown an increasing talent for keeping pucks out of their own goal. In the last seven games, the Bruins have allowed just 19 goals. Unfortunately the offence has also been slowly drying up. The Bruins grabbed an early 2-0 lead Tuesday against the Calgary Hitmen, before falling 3-2. Brandon Magee scored his sixth of the year five minutes into the game and Jamie Crooks scored on the power play 6:29 into the second to give the Bruins a solid shot at their third straight win. But the Bruins let the Hitmen, who sit dead last in the entire Western Hockey League, back into the game when Tyler Stahl was sent to the penalty box for checking from behind a minute and a half later. The Hitmen capitalized on the ensuing power play, and then tied the game three minutes later. A second power play goal in the third period by Jimmy Bubnick proved to be the eventual winner. “Their power play is dynamite,” said Calgary head coach Mike Williamson. “They’ve got a lot of good looks, we got some great goaltending, and I thought our guys did a better job as the game went on of closing some things up. Then our power play came through for us.” ◗ The Bruins finish up their road trip Friday night in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. They then break for Christmas before resuming play Dec. 28 and 29 in Prince George.

With four returning starters and a starting five that average about six-footfour-inches, the single A Flames are well positioned to achieve this year’s team goals: win the Fraser Valley Championships and finish top four at the provincials. They’re off to a good start. Already ranked fourth in

the province, Unity took second at the Agassiz Chieftains Classic tournament this past weekend, beating Maple Ridge 59-47 and Westview 66-46 before going down to Regent Christian 70-55. Nathan Vugteveen and Michael Haan earned tournament all-star honours. The Flames opened their regular season Monday night with a 59-43 win over ninth-ranked Maple Ridge Christian. That year we only won 4 games.” In both of their two provincial appearances since then, Unity finished eighth—a pattern they intend to break this season. As the only single A boys team within a 45-minute drive, though, finding competition is a challenge, so Campbell has his boys locked into a rigorous tournament schedule that will allow them to test their mettle against most of the top single A teams in the province before the provincials in March. Howse cut from juniors C

hilliwack Bruins’ sniper Ryan Howse’s World Junior dream is over. Howse was among the first nine players cut during the selection camp for this winter’s World Junior Championships. Howse scored a goal in the final intra-squad scrimmage game. But it wasn’t enough to make a team that has been described as a “lunch-bucket” squad. “Going back to my club team today Ryan kind of sucks and it’s a tough feeling, a tough pill to swallow,” said Howse Howse on Tuesday. “But I know they’re going to pick a good team and be a good team and judging from the players they got here they got a good shot at winning gold this year. It

was good to be a part of it for sure.” Howse was hardly the only big-name junior star cut. Brendan Gallagher, the Vancouver Giants’ leading scorer, also failed to make the team. Kamloops Blazer star Brendan Ranford, the Western Hockey League’s leading scorer, wasn’t even invited. As Howse returned from one junior camp, his linemates, Robin Soudek and Roman Horak, left for another. Soudek and Horak, who grew up in the same town, left to take part in the Czech Republic’s World Junior selection camp. The World Junior Championship kicks off on Boxing Day in Buffalo, N.Y.

he provincial government finally released the results of the much-anticipated Fraser Valley Transit Study (FVTS) on Thursday, and commuter rail on the old inter-urban line doesn’t fare too well. “An inter-urban commuter rail service would cost about $70 million, which costs significantly more than the other transit options available,” the study finds. The FVTS analyzed how people travel in the communities of Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope, Kent, Mission and Harrison Hot Springs and throughout the region. The study was initiated by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in November 2008, and was slated for completion November 2009. Municipalities expected to have the study by February of this year, but the provincial government said it was conducting an internal review before releasing the information. Because of the projected growth patterns, this is not expected to change,” the report states. Funding for transit is also an issue with regards to large investments. Chilliwack spends $9 in property tax per capita, considerably lower than other mid-size communities in B.C. and significantly lower than other large municipalities in Canada. Prince George residents pay $25 per capita, Kelowna $26, Victoria $40, Oakville, Ontario residents pay $43 per capita, York Region $73 and Guelph $78.

The study estimates a potential ridership of 15 million passengers by 2030. To achieve this, service hours would need to reach 420,000 hours annually and services must be enhanced. Since 2001, ridership has increased by 62 per cent to 2.7 million from 1.7 million. Current annual funding for transit in the Fraser Valley is $10 million. The province provides 47 per cent of funding. Fares and property taxes contribute the rest.

hat some people create in their garages and basements can be amazing. Up a quiet crescent on Promontory, tucked in a garage among the suburban jungle, Jeff Maron meticulously and artistically builds hunting and fishing knives with a stunning precision and beauty. Starting with high-quality steel, exotic woods and handstitched leather, Maron puts his heart, soul and quite literally his sweat into each knife. That’s because every stage, including making bevels in the tempered steel blades, is done by hand. “I think of people maybe 100

Jeff Maron’s handmade knives are works of art years ago back with a file,” Maron said during an interview in his workshop. “Most knife-makers use a grinder to make bevels. I do all of them by hand. It takes a little more time, a lot of perspiration and effort.” To say he enjoys a challenge would be an understatement given the precision and attention to detail required to make these

knives. (He said he made his own telescope once and that it works quite well.) “I used to do taxidermy, but it’s so messy,” he added. “With this it’s just dust.” The knife-building process is a long one starting with the steel, which he cuts into lengths and into the rough form of a blade.

He then uses a furnace to heat it up to 1,000 degrees C and then “quenches” the metal between aluminum plates. There is a long process of heating and cooling to get the metal to the correct level of hardness. Once his blades are formed he makes handles using spalted horse chestnut, camphor burls, 100year-old holly and other woods.

His favourite is black palm. He also makes leather-wrapped, stitched handles and does custom jobs. “I made a leather-wrapped handle for a local guy,” he said. He had a bow and quiver and he wanted it to match.” Everything with Maron is self-taught, but his schooling in geology has helped him with the science. But his motivation is his late father. He has a photo of his father over his workbench holding up the head of a huge buck. He also has his father’s image tattooed on his forearm as a living tribute. Concert series opens revamped hall

he Harrison Festival Society celebrates the opening of the newly renovated Memorial Hall with four concerts between Jan. 22 and March 11. The Festival Society is excited about the work that has been done in this community facility. With a fresh look, a forced air heating system and new washrooms, the renovated hall will make for a much nicer concert experience. The Festival Society is known for presenting a wide range of musical styles in concerts that are intimate and affordable and this is no more evident than with the first four shows of 2011: Blues, merengue from the Dominican Republic, Celtic/Latin Stomp and Ottawa Valley fiddle and step dancing. Patrick fought for Canada in World War II and was the oldest living vet in Chilliwack. Patrick was an avid championship horseshoe player and also enjoyed pool cribbage and gambling. Patrick is survived by his wife Helen Mackie (nee Holmes) and 3 children daughters Donna Kealoha, Diane Seeley, and son Johnny Mackie, 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters Mary and Nellie and by brother David Mackie.

May 7, 1965 ~ December 14, 2010 Amy was born May 7th, 1965 in Vancouver. Amy’s long 4 year battle with cancer came to an end on December 14th, 2010 and surrounded by her family, made her way to her new home. She is survived by her husband of 24 years Greg, children Andrew, Charlotte, and Geoffrey, mother Pamela, mother in law Jennie, Father Gerry and sister Zoë. Predeceased by grandmother Amy Charlotte Mott, Lou Gates, and father in law Al Slovick. The family would like to say thank you to all the doctors and nurse’s that gave them four more years with Amy and all the very special care she received in her ﬁnal days at the Cascade Hospice. We will be celebrating Amy’s memorial service on Tuesday December 21st, at 1:00 pm at the Broadway M.B. Church, 46611 Maple Ave., Chilliwack BC.
