here is a reason that extreme skiing and snowboarding films have come to be called “snow porn.” Such films—some produced with million-dollar budgets—show men and women who are much, much cooler than you performing stunts that you would never, ever be brave enough to try. Any story, plotline or character takes a backseat to the superhuman stunts caught on film. But Chilliwack’s Nicolas Teichrob is no snow pornographer. Consider him, rather, a snow scientist. Next Friday, Teichrob’s debut film Out of the Shadows will get its first local showing at Sardis Community Church. The film, which Teichrob shot, produced, edited and financed out of his own pocket alongside friend Athan Merrick, recently grabbed the Best Big Mountain See TEICHROB, Page 4

he average Chilliwack home is worth more this year than last, according to BC Assessment notices homeowners should have received this week. But the increase in Chilliwack is lower than in just about every community to the west, including every city in the Fraser Valley except for Mission. The average assessed value of a home in Chilliwack increased by 3.85 per cent from the 2010 assessment roll to the 2011 one. In Abbotsford, the estimated percentage change of residential assessments jumped 6.5 per cent. In Langley the increase was 6.69 per cent, in Surrey, 7.58 per cent. Cross over the Port Mann and the numbers are more dramatic. Coquitlam homeowners saw an average 9.12 per cent increase, while assessments rose 12.07 per cent in Burnaby and 12.17 per cent in Vancouver. Richmond properties increased in value by an estimated 17.14 per cent over the year. An increase in a home’s value does not mean municipal taxes will increase unless the increase is higher than the average for the community. BC Assessment estimates the market value of properties as of July 1 the previous year.

File/TIMES

The average single family home price in Chilliwack went from $245,000 in 2010 to $252,000 in 2011. Strata apartments inched up from $151,000 to $153,000 and strata townhouses rose from $227,000 to $238,000. Assessed values for single family homes in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs increased from $344,000 in 2010 to $365,000 this year. The District of Kent saw a jump in the assessed value of a single value home from $272,000 in 2010 to $300,000 in 2011. In Chilliwack, business and “other” assessments increased by 1.6 per cent on average over the year. More than 186,000 property owners in the Fraser Valley should have received 2011 assessment notices this week. The

total assessment roll for the Fraser Valley increased from $73 billion last year to $78 billion this year. New subdivisons, rezoning and new construction accounted for $1.3 billion of that growth. Provincewide, the total 2011 assessment roll topped $1 trillion for the first time ever. At $1,043,127,129,141 the value of properties increased eight per cent over the 2010 value of $970 billion. ◗ Property owners who feel their assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2010 or who see incorrect information should contact the BC Assessment office. The Fraser Valley assessment office is located at 240-31935 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford and is open Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

n increase in BC Assessment’s property valuations in Chilliwack does not necessarily translate into changes in the local housing market, according to some realtors. Kyle Hislop, president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board (CADREB), says assessed values are a starting point at best, but he doesn’t put much stock in BC Assessments numbers. “Personally I don’t pay much attention to the assessed value of a property when pricing a home for sale,” Hislop told the Times. He said there are two reasons for this attitude: assessments are based on valuations of property more than six months in the past and the assessed val-

the area, three sold for substantially more than the assessed value and two sold for less. For example, one home assessed at $278,000 sold for $320,000 and one assessed at $275,000 sold for $235,000. “As you can see there really isn’t any correlation between assessed value and market value,” Hislop said. As for house prices in 2011, Hislop said he agrees with B.C. Real Estate Association chief economist Cameron Muir who has suggested we are likely heading into a “more normalized” market. “I wouldn’t be surprised . . . to see home prices in 2011 actually fall by one per cent,” he said. “Not a major change—for the average house price in Chilliwack, which lingers around $300,000 to $330,000—that’s only a $3,000 difference. “

His science-oriented mind gives him an edge on competition TEICHROB, from page 1 Film Award at the 2010 International Freeski Film Festival (IF3). By doing so, the pair knocked off some of the biggest snow pornographers in the business. Teichrob is just 26, but his last decade has involved scaling one mountain after another, both figuratively and literally. After graduating from Sardis secondary school (and receiving the Governor General’s Bronze Medallion as top student), Teichrob headed to the University of British Columbia. Eight years and two degrees later, including a master’s in glacial morphology, Teichrob is now a professional extreme sports photographer, a career that ironically requires no formal education whatsoever. “I skied a lot during university and just started shooting photos because I loved [it],” he told the Times from his Sunshine Coast home. While studying snow and ice formations that move centimetres each year, he became passionate about photographing the men and women who ski above and on those formations at breathtaking speeds. “I just put a lot of work into creating new images, new perspectives, try to produce a new look for myself and that kind of took off.” Still, Teichrob credits his university work for sparking his interest and developing his abilities as a photographer. He figures his science-oriented mind gives him an edge on the hypercompetitive Whistler photography scene. “With my background in geology, I studied landscapes a lot, and I did some field work where we fly in helicopters for the whole summer and I was getting all these aerial perspectives and that really inspired me to look at things differently,” said Teichrob.

largely the same. “Both of them, as a photographer you’re capturing a single moment in time,” he said In the summer of 2009, Teichrob and Merrick—who has a film degree from UBC—

decided to make a film together to expose the world to some of the talented skiers whose abilities had not yet been noticed by the closed coterie of production companies, while at the same time humanizing, rather than deifying, its subjects. Along with the standard ski-storm psychopathy, each segment of the film shows the athletes in their day-to-day lives away from the mountains before they hit the hills, And if the IF3 award is any indication, they pulled it off pretty darn well. “To beat [the major companies] was awesome,” he said. “It was the first time we had unbiased industry recognition that what we made was worth noting.” All of that is made easier with a new generation of moderately-priced cameras that brings filmmaking to the masses. “Because you can put HD on a D-SLR,” he said, “the same camera that I’m shooting stills on, I’m shooting video on. That was a huge turning point.” Sure the filmmakers couldn’t afford helicopters, but they were able to use their skiing skills and filmmaking knowledge to beat some of the best in the business. For Teichrob, whether he’s shooting video or film, it comes down to one simple premise: “I want to capture really good moments in time.” A trailer for Out of the Shadows can be seen at www.dendritestudios.com. A link on the page will take viewers to the studio’s store, where the film can be purchased in a variety of formats, the cheapest of which costs just $2. ◗ Teichrob’s film, along with a cultural documentary on Kashmir as seen through the eyes of skiers, can be seen Friday at Sardis Community Church. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets, which can be bought at the door, are $5.

the warmest since Chilliwack records commenced in 1895. There certainly were some cold snaps, particularly an unusual pre-winter one with a daily record low of -11.1 C hit on Nov. 24. In 2010, frost totals in Chilliwack were 40.35 per cent below normal, the lowest in more than 25 years. This was primarily due to the exceptionally mild conditions between January and April, according to Pannett. For the 13th consecutive year, total annual precipitation was below normal. Total precipitation for the year was 1,627 millimetres, which compares to the 30-year average of 1,880.1 mm. Just 17.2 centimetres of that fell as snow, 87 per cent below the 30-year average of 129.4 cm. While there was less moisture from above in 2010, what did fall fell more consistently as there were 194 days of precipitation, up from the average of 174.

espite the wettest December in 12 years, 2010 was still drier and warmer than normal. A wet and cool spring last year was followed by the 10th consecutive summer with above normal mean temperatures, which peaked with a daily-record-breaking maximum temperature of 36 C on Aug. 14, according to Environment Canada volunteer weather observer Roger Pannett. Overall the mean temperature for the year was 11.08 C, which compares to the 30-year average of 10.2 C. This made 2010 the warmest year since 2004. Since 1986, when the warming trend began, the only years with below normal mean temperatures were 1996 and 2008, Pannett said. The 2001 to 2010 decade was

Douglas Erickson disappeared Thursday while working with a work crew near Allco Park, a large park near Maple Ridge. In 2007 he was arrested after a long standoff involving two adults and two children in a room at the Comfort Inn in Chilliwack. He had been wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. Erickson, 42, is white, five-foot-8 and 185 pounds, with brown eyes and short brown

Plotnikoff, 30, is white, six-foot-four and 209 pounds, with blue eyes and short brown hair. He has a sickle and hammer tattoo on a finger of his right hand and a maple leaf on a finger of his left hand. Traill, 48, is white, five-foot-11 and 165 pounds, with hazel eyes and short blond hair. With the cabbies expecting a busy night during which they wouldn’t be able to keep up with demand, and with bars expecting

Ric drove one of the three buses on the roads and said the program was such a success that the bars and cab company are considering using the vans during future special events, like Halloween or concerts.

NEW YEAR’S BABY FIRST OF 2011

BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

Paul J. Henderson/TIMES

Mom Sylvia Antle and dad Cole McAuley enjoy a happy waking moment with little Karissa Faith Lillian McAuley. Antle delivered her seven-pound, five-ounce bundle of joy at 1:02 p.m. on Jan. 2 making Karissa the New Year’s Baby in Chilliwack.

Reduce your late fees by reading

T

heFraserValleyRegional Library is ditching late fees for kids and giving them a fun way to read away outstanding charges. The Library has launched its 2011 Read Away Fines p ro g ra m , w h i c h a l l ow s children to knock up to $55 off their library fines by reading through January and February. Children can track their reading on a Read Away Fines Reading Record, available at any FVRL library, including those in Chilliwack. Each day a child reads and tracks until Feb. 28 knocks $1 off their fines. The program is part of an overhaul of the library’s fine structure that applies to fines on children’s material borrowed on children’s cards. “ The 2011 Read Away Fines program for children is a celebration of FVRL’s elimination of overdue fines on children’s material borrowed on children’s cards,” said Rita Penco, Director of Client Services at FVRL. “Reading is an essential skill for every child. Children now have free access to library materials without worrying about the threat of overdue fines. This program gives children who may have stopped using the library because of pre-existing fines, the chance to get rid of their

old fines in a fun way while rediscovering FVRL.” Children will be reminded to return books on time in a variety of ways. And if an item remains unreturned, the library reserves the option to bill the user to recover its cost. Adult materials borrowed on a children’s card will remain 10 cents per item per day, but the cost of not returning other materials is going up, in an effort to encourage on-time return of high demand materials and to improve accessibility of library resources. Late charges on adult books, magazines and CD books are now 35 cents per item per day. Late charges on adult DVDs and music CDs are now $1 per item per day. Borrowing library materials is always free. If you need a little longer, most items may be renewed up to three times; high demand items and items with holds are not renewable. You can renew online, by phone, or in person at any FVRL location. All fines that FVRL collects go to support library programs and services offered to all customers at no charge. ◗ For more information on the Read Away Fines Program or FVRL’s new fines structure visit www.fvrl.ca or a local branch.

The Globe and Mail has called him “a fitness instructor for the brain,” and this month Chilliwack learners of all ages can join him for a free grey-matter workout. Master teacher and trainer Terry Small will be at the G.W. Graham theatre on Jan. 17 to present “How to get better grades,” a seminar designed to help students take charge of their time and succeed in school. Despite its name, however, the session isn’t just for students, according to organizer and G.W. Graham vice-principal Chuck Lawson. “It’s not just about getting good grades; it’s about understanding the brain,” he said. “It’s open to students, adults and anybody interested in understanding the brain further for learning.” Small, who has taught at the elementary, secondary and university level for 28 years, was in town in October for G.W. Graham’s Grade 11 and 12 study skills conference,

and Lawson was impressed with his engaging approach. “He’s a dynamic speaker who captures the audience’s attention,” said Lawson. “What I like is the fact that he leaves me thinking about learning beyond the classroom.” The G.W. Graham VP plans to bring his nine-year-old son to the seminar. Besides teaching study skills, Small—who has a master’s degree in reading strategies—also teaches corporate seminars and speed reading seminars all over the world. Part of theVancouver-based speaker’s philosophy for students is that how much they study isn’t as important as how they study. His seminars include a host of strategies for better learning, ranging from effective note taking to listening to Baroque music. ◗ The “How to get better grades” seminar starts at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 at the G.W. Graham theatre. For more information about Terry Small, visit www.terrysmall. com.

◗ Opinion

The end is arbitrarily near It’s 2011. And you know what that means, don’t you? It means there are only two years left. We don’t even have two years, in fact. We actually have only one year, 11 months, and 17 days. That’s when, according to the Mayan calendar, we meet our doom. There will be earthquakes and famine and pestilence and floods and rending of garments and a great gnashing of teeth. OK, some of that is really Revelations stuff. But nevertheless, the Mayan calendar scholars assure us that Dec. 21, 2012, will be the last day of our existence. The world will be thrown into such chaos that none will survive. Or else it will be a day of great upheaval… which few of us will survive. Or maybe lots will survive. But it will be tough. Somewhat tough, anyway. Somewhere, someone will stub a toe, or maybe hit a finger with a hammer. And it will hurt. You can be assured of that. There will be great pain—or at least considerable pain. Some pain, anyway. It’s actually pretty hard to nail down the level of gloom the Mayan calendar soothsayers are predicting for humanity two years hence.

BOB GROENEVELD

Be Our Guest They seem to be softening their stance somewhat as we get closer to the fateful day. Indeed, some of them are admitting that maybe—just maybe—the most significant thing that will happen when the current Mayan calendar draws to its close, is that it will flip over to the beginning of another 5,125-year cycle of the Mayan calendar. Now that’s pretty significant. I mean, a bona fide 5,125-year cycle doesn’t get started every day. Or… maybe it does. After all, the day after 5,125 years from today will be the beginning of the next 5,125 years after the 5,125 years that started today. Our concept of beginnings and endings of time are kind of arbitrary. Under the Julian calendar—before our current Gregorian calendar – the first day of the year was March 1. That’s why our ninth month now starts with “sept” (seven), our tenth starts with “oct” (eight), our eleventh starts with “nov” (nine), and our twelfth starts with “dec” (ten).

Pope Gregory XIII’s decision to begin the year on Jan. 1 put us all off by two months. Have you ever wondered why we compensate for leap years at the end of February instead of, more logically, at the end of the year? It’s those two months. Why is Jan. 1 the first day of the year? Maybe because somebody whispered into the pope’s ear that maybe Jan. 1 would be a good place to start a year. Or maybe it was Greg’s favourite saint’s day. Either way, it boils down to an entirely arbitrary decision. At least Julius Caesar’s calendar started on a day that gave reasonable expectation of the end of winter and the beginning of a new cycle of growth—an important time for a mostly agrarian society. And the Mayan calendar makes even more sense, ending each year, as it does, on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, thereby always ensuring a brighter year ahead. It’s something to ponder over the next year, 11 months, and 17 days. Or you could arbitrarily decide to ponder something else as our existence approaches its Mayanprescribed completion. Or not. ◗ Bob Groeneveld is editor for the Langley Advance.

s we enter a brand new year, we’ve recently exited the closing week of the old year—a week that has traditionally been one in which families get together for the holidays. These days, however, there’s a good bet that many of the gatherings were virtual rather than real. And the smart money will be on smart phones taking an even bigger role in family and friendly togetherness by the time the year we’re starting this week turns into next year’s “old year.” There are few spheres left that the digital world hasn’t touched. A holiday without iPhones, Blackberries, Facebook, YouTube, and app downloads has become almost as unthinkable as a festive dinner without turkey and cranberries. According to recent trend spotters, Canadians spend more time online than people in any other country. Almost 70 per cent of Canadians are online, and more than 50 per cent are now on Facebook. Canada is also the only country where users logged an average of more than 2,500 minutes online a month. That’s about 42 hours. Give yourself eight hours of shut-eye, and your online stretch comes to nearly 10 per cent of your waking hours. That’s a lot of time spent hunched over computer and telephone screens. To be sure, we’ve benefited in many ways from being wired. The Internet can be a profoundly democratizing force, as examples like WikiLeaks and uploaded cellphone videos have proved. Social networking and Skype have allowed geographically distant families and friends to stay connected. But the Internet also has a dark side. Evil and stupidity also spread with alacrity online. The Internet can eat up vast amounts of time. At its worst, our presence online detracts from being present in our real lives. The Internet is here to stay. But it brings with it lasting social changes. In our rush to the information highway, it’s worth a backward glance at what we’re giving up, as well as what we’re gaining.

Just who is getting ahead of themselves? Editor: Re: Gravel critics getting ahead of themselves, says mayor (Dec. 21, Times). We are puzzled by the mayor’s comment that “City of Chilliwack elected officials are not the correct people to be lobbying.” The application by Kirkness Pacific Holdings for a gravel quarry and conveyor on the north slope of Vedder Mountain was referred to the city for comment. The city replied to the Ministry of Energy and Mines on March 12 that “I have attached your letter with the City’s approval subject to the conditions noted above.” Further, it must be pointed out that the Official Community Plan (10.1.10) states that “The Chief Administrative Office of the City of Chilliwack or other officer appointed by Council will administer the provisions of this Plan.” Our “elected officials” have only delegated the task but can not escape responsibility for the city’s actions. The mayor also stated that “The city doesn’t get involved until rezoning application is received and that has not been done yet.” But as pointed out above, on March 12, 2010 a city manager gave the “city’s approval” to this project, and that is now nine months ago, well before any zoning application is likely to be received. We ask the public to decide whether we are getting ahead of ourselves. Victor Froese Chilliwack

Common sense alive and well Editor: It is with pleasure I have read the comments of Margaret Johnston, Nicole Kornelson of Chilliwack and of Marc Paquette of Hawksbury, Ont., in the Chilliwack Times issues of Dec. 31 and Jan. 4. These letters show that common sense is alive and well in our community and across the country. Why then, do papers such as yours not practise their mandate and report on real life issues affecting each and everyone of us. I am speaking about Bill C-36.

Send us a letter TO INCLUDE YOUR LETTER, use our online form at www.chilliwacktimes.com, contact us by e-mail at editorial@chilliwacktimes.com, fax 604-792-9300 or mail us at 45951 Trethewey Ave, Chilliwack, B.C. This bill is really bad news for each and everyone of us, because it threatens our rights and freedoms and our sovereignty as a nation. I dare you to publish my letter, which hopefully will serve to wake up the sleeping masses. They are sleeping because the media are publishing drivel instead of real-life altering news and criminal actions by our elected representatives in all layers of governments. How can we expect our young people to make meaningful choices and become productive members of our nation, when ignorant politicians dismantle trades training systems and create laws instead, turning us into police-state-slaves instead? Marc Paquette’s letter is a case in point; hiring and paying for more and more police to play the games of “cops and robbers” chasing grow-ops does nothing for the people and costs a lot of money without “winning.” The medical establishment is complicit in aiding and abetting a murderous pharma industry. The causes and cures of cancers, for instance, have been identified since 1981 and have nothing whatsoever to do with carcinogenic substances and everything to do with meaningful biological special programs every living entity is born with and which get initiated upon a profound subconscious perception of our inner selves. learninggnm.com. Harald Tilgner Ryder Lake

Take care of our own first Editor: Our own seniors, pension-

ers, veterans and desperate families are unable to pay what they need for housing and food. Our government says we are “broke” and they can’t help our own seniors, homeless, veterans, orphans, etc. Yet we have provided aid to Haiti, Chile, Turkey and other countries in the hundreds of millions of dollars. We have retired seniors living on a fixed income receiving no aid while our government and religious organizations pour hundreds of millions of dollars and tonnes of food to foreign countries with known corruption. We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans. Canada, a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed without eating, elderly going without needed meds, and mentally ill without treatment—yet we have a benefit for the people of other countries. Imagine if we gave ourselves the same financial support that we give all the other countries. Homelessness, hunger and crime could be greatly reduced and perhaps eliminated in Canada. We have to take care of our own backyard before offering to help others. Michael Hodge Chilliwack

Martin totally out to lunch Editor: Ah the magical ’70s . . . things were better back then. There was no such thing as lazy and the high

schools were full of young go-getters just waiting to crack their way into the workforce and take on the world! Do you remember the ’70s John Martin? Or are you actually living in a fantasy? Your column, although entertaining, was a load of crap. While I wasn’t laughing at your rose-tinted version of the past, I was personally offended that you used such ridiculous generalizations when referring to this generation’s youth. If all of us were playing video games in our mom’s basement, who would be working the entry level jobs you speak of? Or attending the university that employs you? At 22, I’ve been in the workforce for the past nine years starting as a newspaper carrier. It should also be stated that as a woman in those golden ’70s you speak of, I wouldn’t have been hired at a lot of the jobs I’ve worked and I wouldn’t be making as much money as a man in my position. Things change. Since I became employed I’ve worked with many of the pierced and mohawked individuals you speak of. In fact at the moment I work with a young girl with blue hair, tattoos and a nose ring and I can tell you she works a lot harder and does a better job than a lot of the people I’ve worked with, young or old. Like I said, I’ve been employed since 13 and started working full-time immediately after high school, sometimes taking on two jobs to pay for college. There are a lot of us. I don’t need to go by some statistic, I could see it with my own eyes when I was in high school. All of my friends had jobs and a lot of them, like me, are now paying their way through college without help from parents. So in your perfect world I would need to wait eight years to vote. After I’ve been paying taxes and living independent from my parents since 18? Genius. If only your generation was given such a condition. Maybe things wouldn’t be in the state they’re in. Maybe they should put a law in

place that every vote has to meet with your approval, Mr. Martin, so that we can be sure to “get it right.” Oh yeah, we live in Canada. A democracy. If there’s any reason youth don’t vote it’s because of crusty old knowit-alls like you. I’m an adult and I have as much right to vote as you do. The choices this country makes as a population affect my future just as much as yours. I’d normally never stoop to name-calling in a debate but I don’t feel I owe you respect after you’ve shown little towards my generation. Maybe instead of limiting the number of people allowed to vote and giving up on our generation, you could actually take the time to listen to kids. Since teens and young adults are inhabitants of this country too, maybe it would be worthwhile to let them know they have a voice. If you actually put a little faith in us, you might find that we’ll decide what we feel is right for the province and the country . . . and it might actually work. Mike de Jong should be congratulated for trying to instill a sense of purpose in young adults, not reprimanded. Our elders should be helping and guiding us with their experience, not limiting our choices and giving up on us. Shame on you. Comparing this generation to another and not taking into account the economic environment, the population and technology is just plain ignorant. It’s apples and oranges. Wake up and smell the Doritos, Mr. Martin. Young people have a voice. We are not going to let criticism stifle our beliefs. The reality is that young people have a say in what happens here whether the voting age is 16, 18 or 25. All we can do is have a little faith and thank our lucky stars that men like you are not in power. Brittany Waslan Chilliwack

Faith Today BY VERN TOMPKE Vineyard Community Church

W

ell it’s 2011 and once again we’ve survived the joyous “let’s fight about what to call the holidays.” Just when I think we have avoided the culture wars of our American neighbours, December rolls around again. As I think about all the “holiday-naming” letters to the editor I read in December, it seems to me that there is a whole lot of fear running in the collective background in many of these comments. Not that I don’t think there are genuine concerns in both “camps.” Increasingly, it seems that Christians find it difficult to practise, teach and celebrate their

Culture wars & Chilliwack faith. Tolerance increasingly looks like freedom from religion, not freedom to practise or celebrate one’s religion. They see faiths publically celebrated in the spirit of multiculturalism—except of course, Christianity. Ironically, many Christians fear that in this “tolerant” society, they have less and less freedom to actively walk out their faith. People who practise an alternate lifestyle or believe in an alternate worldview have no less fear. The talk that this country was once (and should remain) a Christian nation, serves to make them feel excluded and marginalized

(whether this claim has a basis in fact or not). For people who don’t identify with Christian beliefs and lifestyles, they fear what bring “Christ” back into Christmas is really saying. If one want to understand the fear and experience of being under another’s religion domination, talk to our First Nation brothers and sisters who share our city. So maybe a word to each group—and perhaps I will leave both groups equally offended. To the “Christmas-ites”: surely we can recognize that government aligning itself with Chris-

tianity doesn’t do our faith any long-term favours—anybody hear about a guy called Constantine? It appears to me that some Christians look at their culture around them and bemoan their perceived loss of their influence as the primary power brokers. Get over it! Get out there and be salt and light in a world that is desperate for love and hope. Next year instead of getting drawn into debate, astound the non-believers around you with your generosity of spirit. To the “winter holiday-ites,” surely respect for others includes a respect for the long-term cultural tradition of Christmas in our

country. Does anybody actually believe that this means our public schools will now be actively promoting Christianity? Have you been in a school recently? My New Year’s wish is that this coming year we have a much fuller dialogue of respect between all groups of people—whatever you believe or practice. For those who believe that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season,” maybe next December we will find a way to both praise the Lord and collectively take a pass when it comes to the ammunition.

Bruins buoyed by returnees

T

he Chilliwack Bruins limp into Kamloops Friday with some much needed reinforcements back from international duty. Bruised and abused, the Bruins played Sunday against the Vancouver Giants with just five of their normal contingent of forwards. They should get some help against the Blazers, with first-liners Robin Soudek and Roman Horak expected to rejoin the team after skating with the Czech Republic’s entry in the 2011 World Junior Championship. The second and third lines should also receive some help as Steven Hodges and Brandon Magee have returned to the fold after playing in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The Bruins are still missing some vital sandpaper, however, as Brendan Persley (foot), Curt Gogol (shoulder) and Mike Forsyth (hand) are nursing injuries and not expected back. On defence, captain Brandon Manning has also not returned to the lineup since testing his injured groin Dec. 28 in Prince George. And Jesse Pauls is still out since breaking his leg. Playing against Vancouver on Sunday in front of a solid Prospera Centre crowd of 4,027, the Bruins simply lost a war of attrition. Kevin Sundher opened the scoring midway through the first for the locals but Vancouver tied the game up in the final minute of the period with the first of three power play goals on the night. The Giants took the lead just past the halfway point of the second. Then with Tyler Stahl in the box, Dylen McKinlay was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway. He scored, but Stahl

was still sitting in the sin bin when, less than a minute later, the Giants retook the lead. That was it for the undermanned Bruins and Vancouver added three more goals in the third period for a 6-2 victory. After facing the Blazers, the club returns to Chilliwack to host the Seattle Thunderbirds Sunday. Game time is 5 p.m. and the team is asking fans to bring Campbell’s Soup products to the game to donate them to the Salvation Army. Campbell’s will match each donation of one of their products.

Blazers Friday On Friday, the Bruins will face a Kamloops team that has been at the centre of off-ice controversy after management decided to ban a well-respected reporter from speaking to players or management. Team officials didn’t like a column written by Kamloops Daily News sports editor Greg Drinnan—who is often called the dean of the WHL press corps—which questioned management’s ability to turn the franchise in the right direction. The move to ban him contravenes the league’s media policy and has made news across the country.

Grizzlies clawing their Pacific Allstar Cheerleading way up the rankings Presents the

he G.W. Graham Grizzlies are moving on up. Last month the senior boys basketball team moved from 10th to fourth in provincial AA rankings, and this week a comfortable 98-53 win over Aldergrove put them in a tie for first place in Fraser Valley East. “It’s the first game after the Christmas break,” said Grizzlies coach Jake Mouritzen of Tuesday night’s game against a “We’ve knocked rebuilding Aldergrove squad, “so off some we used the game higher-ranked to get our legs going again. We teams, so we’re go 16 players deep pretty happy on our roster, so all 16 got to play.” with fourth Although the right now.” team finished Jake Mouritzen fourth at the provincials last year, they started the season ranked 10th after losing graduating stars Micah Cockrill and Chris Thompson. With 15 of his 16 players in Grades 10 and 11, Mouritzen is happy with the team’s play thus far. “We’ve knocked off some higher-ranked teams, so we’re pretty happy with fourth right now,” he said. By the time playoffs roll around, the Grizzlies will get the chance to knock off a few

more. At this weekend’s Okana-qen tournament in Oliver, the stage is set for a semi-final showdown with second-ranked Southern Okanagan. And later this month the Grizzlies will test their mettle against first-ranked Lambrick Park at a couple of Vancouver Island tournaments. Their next league game is Tuesday against R.E. Mountain in Langley. Senior girls feel sting of first loss G.W. Graham’s senior girls squad took their first league loss of the season Tuesday, dropping a close 67-65 game to M.E.I. Lopside victory for Chilliwack girls In other hoops action, Chilliwack secondary’s senior girls chalked up their second win of the regular season with a lop-sided 72-14 win over the Abbotsford Panthers, while the Sardis girls dropped an equally lopsided 7518 game to Heritage Park in Mission. Sardis senior boys edged by bateman The Sardis senior boys lost a close 55-52 game to Robert Bateman. Snowstorm cancels hoops match Unity Christian, whose senior boys team ranks sixth provincially in single A, got the week off when their Tuesday game against St. John Brebeuf was cancelled because of the snowstorm that never was. They are back in league action Monday against Credo Christian Secondary in Langley.

Stay a cut above with Dez’s knife knowledge Part 1

I

have always said that one of my favourite things about being a chef is that I get to play with knives. Although this may sound very adventurous in a James Bond fashion, knife skills and proper/safe cutting practices are a very serious subject in the kitchen. With some basic knowledge, you can start to overcome any cutting intimidation you may have. In this column I will focus on the tools themselves— knives. This will be the first of three installments on cutting. My next column will focus on cutting boards, and the third column will focus on cutting techniques. There are many choices when trying to decide on which knives will adorn the collection of cutting tools in your kitchen. The marketplace is saturated with everything from mail-order deals to high-end specialties. First and foremost, I have to stress that one usually gets what they pay for. Before you reach for your credit card when you see

CHEF DEZ

On Cooking the full collection of ginsu knives for only $19.99 on TV, think about it realistically. How well are these knives manufactured? Once the $20 is divided between the TV air-time costs, the production of the commercial, and any middle-men that may be in between (such as marketers, etc.), how much is actually going toward the manufacturing of these knives? Remember, from this amount, a profit must be made as well. If you are looking to start a good-quality knife collection, you should purchase knives that are made from high-carbon stainless steel. The high-carbon content in stainless steel is what ensures the steel is strong. This is very important for keeping a sharp edge. Any knife can be made from stainless steel, but unless it is has a high-carbon content

as well, it will lose its sharpness very quickly in comparison. Start with a standard “Chef’s” knife. Other than for bread-cutting, this is the most versatile knife one can have in the kitchen, and can be used for almost any application. It offers a rounded top edge of the blade that facilitates a rocking motion to ease most cutting/slicing preparations. The next knife one should purchase for their collection is a good-quality serrated knife for breadcutting. The serrated edge will not only produce perfect slices of bread without squashing the bread, it also brings relief to producing extremely thin cuts of fruits and vegetables. One should also purchase a paring knife because a chef’s knife might be overkill for those small jobs. These are the three main knives that should grace the starting foundation of your knife collection. From this point on, you can proceed to adding other knives such as a carving knife, filet knife,

CHILLIWACK TIMES FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2011 A19 Advertising Feature

Don’t be fooled CHEF DEZ, from page 18 cleaver, vegetable knife, etc. Most good-quality knives will offer a full tang, meaning that the steel blade will run through the full length of the handle as well. This will offer more balance and control. Most importantly, ask questions and ask to handle the knives to ensure they offer a comfortable companionship with your unique hand. If a retail store is not informative about their products, and will not allow you to handle them, then take your business to one that will. Dear Chef Dez: I am already assuming that you will not recommend buying those full sets of knives for a really low price from TV, but they must be good if they offer a lifetime guarantee that they will never need sharpening. How can they do this? Is there a catch? Doris B. Burnaby Dear Doris: I am assuming that the knives you are referring to are the same that I have seen. Although they are stainless steel, they offer a very low carbon content which makes them very soft steel in comparison, and thus less expensive to manufacture. Since all of the edges on these knives are serrated, they will keep their sharpness for a longer period of time than a straight-edged knife, because the cutting is achieved by tearing at the food rather than slicing through it. They can offer a “lifetime guarantee” because they play on normal human behaviour. Chances are if they ever do need sharpening/replacing, one is not going to spend the money to ship them back to the manufacturer. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez.com or P.O. Box 2674, Abbotsford, B.C., V2T 6R4. Chef Dez is a food columnist, culinary instructor and cooking show performer. STRESS & ANXIETY Lower Seasonal Affective Disorder

By Dr. C. Hammoud, M.H., Ph.D.

! Recommended for its calming relief from chronic stress, anxiety, chronic fatigue, lack of motivation, inadequate feelings, compulsive disorders, eating disorders.!Helps to restore adrenal balance, mental well being. True evidence (Skeptics can call these people): ! For about 3 years I was stressed out. After starting #66 I’ m fine. I don’t get headaches anymore caused by stress. I’m more effective at work. I’m amazed. It changed my life around. Gerasimos Kallimikos, 25, Astoria, NY ! At times was completely non-functional. After taking 2 capsules within 1 hour “the fog had lifted”. I take some daily and had no relapse for 4 months. Maureen Lavallie, 67, Red Deer, AB ! No sedatives needed anymore. After taking #66 I felt a calm sense of being not #66 sedated as before but full of energy and able to cope balancing my many jobs, children, household and going to school. Highly recommended! Diane Lovato, 54, Norwalk, CA !I have tried other calming products. for 10 years. Bell #66 is the best. OwenA. Miller, 49, Rossiter, PA !Read the Bell website for many more testimonials and other important information.

Prevent COLDS & FLUS

The only cold medicine with a money-back guarantee. Four medical doctors that wrote in their book SHARK LIVER OIL that you can prevent colds and flus. Dr. Hubert wrote since his own high-school age children took shark liver oil they have no more colds. Dr. Haimes’s grandchildren have been taking shark liver oil for 6 months and he writes they have no more infection of any kind. Read on the Bell website: “I had 3-4 flus every winter. None #51 last 5 years.” “Amazing! All of us have no more colds.” “No more asthma, no puffer, no cold, no flus, changed my life”. In North America this is a by-product from the restaurant industry. No sharks are caught for their liver or their cartilage.

Bell products are available in 8,000 health food stores and pharmacies across Canada and USA. Store locations on the Bell website:

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is called the silent killer. If your BP is higher than normal, try to get it down to about 120/80. For many people it is easy to control. If it does not work for you we refund your money. On our website you will find over 50 testimonials with full names and towns from all over USA and Canada. Most of them have listed phone numbers and are happy to talk about the relief they had. No money was paid for testimonials.

WRIST PAIN

Bell Carpal Tunnel Syndrome #30 gave quick relief within an hour. I was hand milking cows and began having weakness, numbness and pain shooting up my arms. Pain increased at night. My doctor suggested surgery as the only option. Not true! The pain and numbness are all gone after taking #30. I can do now whatever activity I want. Marjorie Wilson, 55, Dubuc, SK ! I’m a car mechanic. Holding tools was getting increasingly difficult because of wrist and tendon pain. After 2 weeks on #30 I’m fully productive #30 again. Cancelled scheduled surgery. William Marrero, 56, Miami, FL ! I was wearing wrist braces. A woman saw it and told me she had relief right away with #30. I got some same day. It worked for me as well. Thanks a million. Diane Frank, 49, North Battleford, SK ! I’m a nurse and work with my hands all day. I experienced increasing pain in my hands and fingers. Surgery was the only option I was told. My husband found #30 for me. I have no more pain or inflammation since. You have a life long customer. Nina Wallace, 52, Dacula, GA

ARTHRITIS Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100 testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some #1 examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK.!For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was in and out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killed me. Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects. Eleanor Sauson, Shigawake, QC!Others write: Can walk again for hours…Climb stairs without hanging on to railing…First time in 15 years can sleep at night…Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister.

One fantastical, magical ride T

he wonderful works of Dr. Seuss will be brought to life by the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts (CSOPA) next week. CSOPA stages Seussical: The Musical—a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza—from Jan. 13 to 23 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once On This Island) have lovingly brought to life many favourite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little

child with a big imagination—Jojo. The story centres around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge—not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes “his kind and his powerful heart.” Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a for-all ages story that will make you laugh and cry. Horton the Elephant is played by Will Hutchinson, Jojo by Olivia Simpson, and the mischief-making Cat in the Hat by Brandon Mindel. Mayzie La Bird will be played by Gemma Bridgefoot, the Sour Kangaroo by Brittany Clough, while Emily Janzen will play Gertrude McFuzz. The Mayor of Whoville will be

he Harrison Festival Society presents the Russell Jackson Blues Band on Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Harrison Memorial Hall. Jackson made his name playing bass for B.B. King and a number of other Blues legends. This will be first event in the newly renovated Memorial Hall. Born in Memphis, Tenn., and raised in Kansas, Russell Jackson started playing bass in 1974 and moved to Chicago in 1976 to pursue a career. He joined the Otis Clay Band and had a chance to learn from, and play with, legends such as Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush and Johnny Dollar. By 1979, Jackson had built such a reputation as a blues bass player that at age 25 he was invited to play with the great B.B. King Orchestra. He played with B.B. King for seven years, recording, touring and playing in some of the most famous music venues in the world, from Carnegie Hall and The Grand Ole Oprey to the Moscow Theatre in Russia. In 1986, Jackson was accepted into the prestigious Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He studied under Joel DiBartolo, longtime bassist for Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show Band. In 1989, he was a member of the highly acclaimed rhythm section known as Silent Partners, and wrote the title track for their album If It’s All Night, It’s All Right on the Antones label. During this time, he also played for such greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Katie Webster and Matt Murphy, and even backed Willie Nelson at Farm Aid III and IV. Jackson moved to Canada in 1990, formed his own band, toured and recorded with the likes of Long John Baldry and the Powder Blues Band. He has recorded three solo albums while on the Canadian blues scene and has had videos featured on the Bravo! Network in the U.S. and Canada. In recent
