Time Out over for seniors

ratures and up to of 30 millimetres of rain was a recipe for messiness, but nothing compared to the chain of events that led to flooding two years ago. Then, a major cold snap in December froze the ground, which was followed by nearly 60 centimetres of snow followed by warm weather and more than 150 mm of rain over two days. This week’s snow melt and rain was nowhere near that, according

any Chilliwack seniors who have no family, few contacts and little to do in their day-to-day lives have, for the past 18 years, relied upon the Time Out seniors day program put on by the Chilliwack and District Senior Resources Society (CDSRS). Since the provincial government slashed the program’s funding in August 2009, Time Out has been on life support. This week the program was killed. “We used to run five days a week then we pulled it down to four,” said Al Hunt, CDSRS president. “For the last four or five months we pulled it down to three days. Finally we reached a point where we couldn’t do it any more.” The program was popular with seniors, many of whom would be shut-ins if not for the card-playing, dancing, exercises and outings they participate in, according to Hunt. In August 2009, Fraser Health notified the CDSRS they would no longer receive the $77,000 that helps pay for Time Out. “There are going to be about 90 seniors that have no place to go,” Hunt said then. “It may not seem like a big deal to a lot of people but to the people participating in the program it’s a huge deal. It’s the difference between having a life or not.” Time Out provided an exercise program, art classes, craft classes, special monthly events, celebration of seasonal holidays, board

Massive puddles formed in parking lots, on street curbs and dozens of clogged drains meant splashing cars and wet pant legs. n endangered species recovery project slated for Chilliwack may have its share of critics if conflicts with local flood mitigation strategies and agricultural practices come to fruition. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the province of B.C. have created a draft recovery

strategy under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) for the Salish sucker, an endangered freshwater fish found in watercourses all over Chilliwack. The City of Chilliwack is yet to see what DFO actually wants to do on the ground, but there is concern that the practice of ditch clearing, which destroys the fish’s habitat,

may come under fire. “We are concerned that the process could result in issues for our ditch cleaning program and yes, flood protection,” Mayor Sharon Gaetz told the Times via e-mail. “Specific actions to be taken to increase the range of habitat have not been presented but have been

to city director of engineering David Blain. Blain said there would be catchbasins and culverts blocked—messy for sure, but no disaster. Chilliwack residents awoke to 28 cm of snow Wednesday morning as of 7 a.m., according to Environment Canada’s volunteer weather observer Roger Pannett. The dump was the heaviest 12-hour snowfall in 14 years, Pannett said. With a residual fourcentimetre snowfall, the total on the ground as of Wednesday morning was 32 cm. All public and private schools in in Chilliwack and Fraser Cascade were closed for the day, but the warmer temperatures meant kids were back in class Thursday. Chilliwack bus service was severely limited and garbage collection was cancelled on Wednesday. The city posted notice that customers who did not receive garbage and recycling collection service on Wednesday are allowed to put up to twice their weekly limit of garbage and unlimited recycling at curbside next week at no extra cost. Christmas tree collection will also be extended an additional week.

hilliwack may have experienced one of its heaviest snowfalls in recent memory Tuesday night, but police, fire and hospital officials say drivers and snow shovellers fared surprisingly well. Some drivers did end up in various ditches around town, but RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said that she was pleased—and surprised—at the lack of carnage on local roads. “There were a few minor accidents but considering what we’ve seen from other major snowfalls, it was unevent-

ful,” she told the Times. “It was good; it was amazing, actually.” Assistant fire chief Ian Josephson told a similar story. On-call firefighters were called in to provide backup when engines from Halls 1 and 4 were tied up at different highway accident scenes, but there were no serious incidents. “We were [at car crashes] just to secure the scene and make sure everybody was out safely,” said Josephson. “It was relatively minor, considering the conditions. I guess everybody stayed home.” Fraser Valley Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Jim Simmill was one of those people who stayed off the road.

Simmill called in sick Wednesday, but when he returned to his office on Thursday, he found no serious accidents had taken place in his absence. Those that did occur, he said, were mainly the fault of impatient drivers. “Most of the crashes were the result of guys just going way too fast,” he said. While the slow lane was relatively clear between Chilliwack and Abbotsford, the passing lane glistened with compact snow and slush. “What was happening was guys were getting impatient, they were going in the fast lane, hit[ting] the crud, and the next thing they know, they’re wishing they hadn’t done that,” said Simmill

While the highways were clear by Thursday morning, Simmill reminded drivers that they need to be aware that conditions can change rapidly depending on lane and location. “It can vary from the lane you’re in and between here and Abbotsford; there are at least two different microclimates you go through,” he said. “The temperature can change so quickly, one or two degrees make a world of difference.” Before they got on the roads, many drivers had to dig themselves out. But despite the exertion required, Fraser Health spokesperson Joan Marshall said that emergency rooms had seen no noticeable increase in visits.

According to Observatory director Greg Asner, the instrumentation on the Summit aircraft was developed by the Carnegie Air-

It is important that you know that NASA has no mandate to fly aircraft with sensors over foreign lands. That is 100 per cent Carnegie.”

Pilot continues to help Haitians

BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

O

ne year ago Wednesday a 7.0magnitude earthquake rocked the tiny nation of Haiti and killed more than 316,000 people. Since October, efforts to rebuild the country have been crippled by a cholera epidemic that has claimed an estimated 3,750 lives, and last month violent political protests shut down the capital city of Port-au-Prince for four days. For one young Chilliwack couple, those events struck very close to home. Jason and Wilhelmina Krul and their two-year-old son Jayden had been living in Port-au-Prince for a year when the earthquake devastated the city. They were one year into a four-year posting with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), a Christian organization that has flown humanitarian aid and personnel around Haiti since 1986. The family was evacuated three days after the quake, but Jason, a pilot and former Chilliwack firefighter, returned two weeks later after a brief recovery for a lung infection “Our fly schedule and the amount of organizations we’re serving here in Haiti have gone up exponentially,” he said in a phone interview with the Times, “so it’s been incredibly busy.” Since roads in Haiti were bad even before the earthquake, MAF’s work has become especially important for getting aid, medical supplies and personnel to where they’re most needed For example, the 250-km trip north from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien (the

country’s second largest city) can take between eight to 10 hours by car or truck, according to Krul. His Cessna can cover the distance in 30 minutes. “With the cholera, minutes can literally mean the difference between life and death,” he said. “I’ve visited many different cholera treatment centres up in the north. There’s people coming in and within an hour or so they die. If they’re not able to get the IV into them that quickly, they die.” Massive dehydration is what causes cholera deaths, and often patients, especially children, arrive at Haiti’s cholera clinics so dehydrated that their veins have collapsed and they cannot be rehydrated intravenously. They usually die. At one small hospital Krul visited in the

northern town of Port-de-Paix, he said five to 10 patients were dying per night. With his Cessna, he was able to deliver 900 pounds of IV solution and a team of doctors who showed the local medical staff how to administer IVs through the bone marrow, a painful but life-saving procedure. “When we walked in with these three doctors, they were just so overjoyed,” said Krul. While much of the media coverage about the international relief effort in Haiti has been critical, Krul—who also helped with the relief effort in the U.S. after Hurricane Katrina—said good work has been done in the last 12 months. “I’ve never read in any kind of disaster where, wow, it was such an excellent job, and the relief got right to where it needed to get to,” he said. That being said, he sympathizes with the frustration of the Haitian people, more than 800,000 of whom are still living in tents one year after the quake leveled their homes. That frustration erupted in riots after November’s disputed elections, and the Krul family—reunited in Haiti since June—were forced to hunker down in their Port-au-Prince home for four days while mobs fired shots, burned vehicles and chanted anti-government slogans a few streets away. “That’s the way that they’re heard,” said Krul, who called the riots “intense” rather than frightening. “If they can shut down the city, that’s the way they’re heard.”

February is historically pet dental month in BC when veterinarians make a special effort to educate our clients about the importance of dental care for their precious pets. Dental health is more than just giving your dog or cat a pretty smile. Do you know that dogs and cats get plaque and tartar just like you and I? If you don’t believe me, open their mouth and have a look (or a smell for that matter). Imagine for a minute what would happen to your teeth and your health if you did not brush them for a day, or a week, or a month or ever! Imagine if you never went to the dentist to have your own teeth scaled and polished. If you ignore your pet’s teeth, they get diseased. As with our own teeth, tartar gets below your pet’s gum line and causes gingivitis. If not dealt with, it affects the ligament that holds their tooth in place, causing periodontal disease. Then the tooth abscesses and bacteria get into the bloodstream causing heart and kidney damage, not to mention severe discomfort and pain. We need to prevent tartar early in the disease course. • Most people simply don’t know their pet’s teeth need care or that their pet is suffering. We as veterinarians must do a better job of educating and advocate for your pet because they certainly can’t tell you themselves. Treatment often comes too late in the disease when the owner finally realizes there is a big problem (like when the paint is peeling off the wall when their dog breathes on it).

Benefit Concert for the Academy Equipment Fund Emcee: award-winning Canadian actor David LeReaney

• Most people don’t want the expense of taking care of their pet’s teeth. Try to remember that dental care for your pet is like changing the oil in your car. It is an expense, and it’s time-consuming, but it is cheaper than replacing the engine. • Most people don’t know they have the power to prevent dental disease in their pets. Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is a great way of ensuring they won’t develop advanced dental disease. Ask your veterinary clinic to show you how if you don’t already know. While only 2% of pet owners brush their dog’s teeth, it is a great way to ensure they won’t develop advanced dental disease. You can also feed them a diet formulated to control tartar, give them dental chews and toys developed to reduce tartar and have their teeth scaled and polished when the tartar is starting to build up and cause gingivitis.

Despite more than quadrupling the number of cameras-under the current program 30 cameras are rotated through 120 locations- ticket fines are projected to increase from $3 million a year in ticket fines to only $4.4 million a year. Safety is the main consideration, not ticket revenue, said Nicolas Jimenez, head of road safety for ICBC: “If this program were really about generating money, we would place cameras at intersections with the highest crash volumes and red-light running violations.... [But] we’re not doing that. The new locations are based on where intersection crashes are most likely to cause severe injury or death.” Some Road Rules readers have expressed dismay at the expense of the new additional cameras, and are not persuaded that the program isn’t intended to be a ‘cash cow’. They have suggested other ways of dealing with the problem of red light running. “Stop issuing drivers licenses to young teens” wrote one of our

readers, an interesting comment coming as it did just when a BC liberal leadership candidate was suggesting that the voting age should be lowered to 16 years to correspond with the qualifying age for driving, military enlistment, and trial in adult court.

Although no statistics were cited showing young Barrister & Solicitor teens as more likely than drivers in other age groups to run red lights, the general crash, fatality and injury statistics for 16 to 19 year olds- and especially for males in this age group-and despite improving trends brought about by graduated licensing programs and better driving trainingstill point to teenage inexperience and recklessness as ongoing significant causes of driving risk. The recent holiday season brought to mind a ‘tried and true’ method of intersection control that while not inexpensive, can both prevent and cure a host of problems from red light running to gridlock. We sing the praises of whoever had the foresight to hire manual traffic controllers at lower mainland shopping malls and busy main intersections to deal with the demands of the season. We were reminded of how well trained, decisive, and commanding manual traffic controllers can, to quote a traffic control lesson guide, “promote the safe, rapid and efficient movement of personnel and vehicle traffic. You Tube has a great collection of ‘”dancing traffic cop”’ videos from all over the world that inspire on many levels. Watching the videos, you might almost forget that manually directing traffic is tough and risky work.

from these activities,” the report says. “Both permitted and illegal dredging of ditches and stream channels for flood control and agricultural drainage still occur annually in all watersheds known to have Salish suckers.” But of even more potential concern is what DFO says about agricultural practices such as over-fertilization and herbicide/pesticide use and the impacts on the fish. DFO hosts a public open house on Jan. 17 where the draft recovery strategy will be presented to residents. On Jan. 18, there will be a daylong workshop to further discuss the strategy. “Staff will be at Monday’s open house as well as the workshop to be held the next day,” Gaetz said. “They will prepare a formal response after that. Based on DFO’s document there would be a much bigger issue with respect to farming practices.” The Salish sucker is a small-bodied, fine-scaled fish documented in 11 British Columbia watersheds, all in the Fraser Valley, according to DFO. At least four other populations occur in northwestern Washington State. Salish sucker popula-

Truth flees from job interviews

T

here are plenty of strange and artificial social interactions we have with one another. But for my money, the strangest is the modern job interview. My girlfriend recently went for a job interview, and we spent a while talking about the conventions that have grown up around the interview process. Probably the strangest is the lack of discussion about money. Unless you’ve just won the lottery and you’re simply bored, you and I usually apply for jobs because we want to be, you know, paid. Preferably, we’d like to be paid a lot. And we’d like some benefits on top of that, like dental care, retirement plans, lots of vacation time. But when I was last looking for work, I seldom brought up salary, and never right away. For some reason, the person doing the hiring won’t bring it up right off the bat either. Instead, there is usually a variation of this question directed at the potential employee: “Why do you want this job?” The answers are so obvious they write themselves in 100-foot-high letters of fire inside your brain. They are: “I need money to live!” “I hate the taste of dry dog food.” “My landlord is a harsh and unforgiving soul, who demands

MATTHEW CLAXTON

Be Our Guest a cheque every month, no matter how nice a person I am.” “The bank/credit card company/ loan shark has sent large men with baseball bats to my home twice now, and they are coming back tonight.” “What are you, stupid?” But in reality, we never answer this way. Instead we talk about new challenges and opportunities and fun working environments and how we get up every morning and sing a song with cartoon animals about the wonderfulness of Corporation X. It’s often true that we want this job rather than that job because of those intangibles. But money is, and always will be, the first thing we think about. Then there’s the dreaded question that truly cruel bosses will throw at you: “What do you see as your biggest weaknesses?” No one in the history of the job interview has answered this honestly. Typical answers: “I work too hard.” “I tend to care too much about

my coworkers and workplace.” “The triple-fudge cakes I make for my boss on his birthday sometimes don’t have enough sprinkles!” Actual answers that your conscious mind quickly discards: “I hate getting up on Mondays. Don’t expect to see me early.” “Your office supplies will become mysteriously depleted as long as I work here.” “I am already planning to use this job as a springboard to a better one at Corporation Z.” “I will cry at the drop of a hat, and show you pictures of my cats for hours on end.” “I’m a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen.” “I’m just plain lazy.” Why can’t we have some honesty in the job interview process? Imagine how much simpler it would be if both sides tossed out the falsehoods? Interviewer: “Here’s the amount you’ll be paid and a list of benefits. It’s not great, but it’s the best you’ll find outside of Yellowknife. We expect you to work some overtime.” Interviewee: “Well, I’d love to turn you down and keep looking, but the job market is a giant pit of howling emptiness. I’ll take it.” It would certainly be a lot quicker. ◗ Matthew Claxton is a reporter with the Langley Advance.

mployment is up, businesses are making investments and the local and provincial economy is, well, in a period of recovery. Three years after the global economy collapsed—in large part because of the U.S. housing crisis—that recovery is well underway and looking good, but we are far from being in the clear. The local real estate board and some realtors have expressed concern that the federal government may be considering shortening allowable mortgage amortization periods and raising minimum down payments. Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl said his government was not particularly considering any such changes, just that Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was constantly monitoring the situation. While the real estate industry’s fear might be misplaced, we completely agree that the fragile real estate industry should not be tinkered with any time soon. Real estate agents are worried about real estate agents, but it is true that raising minimum down payments from five to 10 per cent would end the dream of home ownership for many young people. Changing amortization periods from 35 to 25 years is less of a threat—how many people want to carry a mortgage for that length of time?—but the fact remains that our real estate industry was and is much more stable than in the U.S. Clearly the federal government will keep a close eye on household debt levels so nothing as catastrophic as happened in the U.S. will happen here. Caution all around is prudent, and small interest rate increases won’t cause the sky to fall, but now is not the time to tinker with economic recovery. It is all still too fragile.

Where are the snow plows? Editor: Moving to Chilliwack? Think twice before buying a house on a dead-end street where the snow does not get plowed. They want my tax money but I can’t make money if I can’t get to work. Imagine if it were like this for more than a day? There are 12 houses on my street and not one person has successfully made it out of their driveway. City hall said they will not come to clear the snow, so my taxes are paying for other streets to be plowed. What am I to do? What if there is an emergency? Julie Bishop Chilliwack

Don’t give us a transit snow job Editor: The wording of Paul Henderson’s front-page article sounds more like the provincial government’s or our mayor and council’s double speak. Why is it that these dense

people always project costs based on “heavy rail” transit, such as the West Coast Express? Is it because they all are anti-rail transit to begin with? They all asume that it won’t be used in an efficient/costeffective manner. Then why do all sensible governments in North America, Europe or Asia invest heavily in light rail transit? It is because they all know that it is the most efficient method of moving people from A to B. Please don’t give us all this crap about too expensive, buses are better, or people will keep using their cars. If people find that light rail transit is more convenient, cheaper on the pocket book and very efficient, people will gladly leave their cars at home, or at a transit station parking lot. But everyone knows that feeder buses will also need to supplement the system. Don’t give us a snow job. Let’s call a spade a shovel. Calgary’s light rail transit, for example, works wonderfully well and doesn’t interfere too much with the rubbertired traffic. And remember, all or most transit systems need to be subsidized whatever form of transit you take. Let us help the environment too. Alphonse Litjens Chilliwack

Editor: Re: “Take Care Of Our Own First” (Times, Jan. 7). Mr. Hodge expresses altruistic concern that many Canadians are suffering while vast amounts of money and other forms of support are being sent to people in other countries. I think the complaint is valid but fails to address one of the biggest strains upon public resources: the military. For example, the lowest estimate I can find for the cost of Canada’s recent purchase of a fleet of fighter jets is $9 billion. Not only are such expenditures wasteful in times of need, but they are counter-productive since such armaments tend to antagonize our enemies and unsettle our allies. If this money went to help people throughout the world deal with socially destabilizing issues such as poverty and natural disasters, we might far more effectively avert future threats of terrorism and desperate measures taken by desperate people. Nine billion dollars, which is but a part of our so-called “defence” budget—according to the CBC article “Canadian Forces in the 21st Century” (April 21, 2008) Canada’s military budget for 2008 was $18.2 billion and is expected to rise two per cent per year for the next 20 years—could not only help feed, clothe and shelter the poor and disadvantaged both here and abroad, but could also help educate children about sustainable means of conflict resolution. As for the misfortunate in our own community, let us take a close look at ourselves to see what we can do to help make this a better world. Tom Hartley Chilliwack

Question: My skin is feeling dry and looking quite dull … what treatment can you suggest for a quick improvement? Lesley, Chilliwack Answer: Glycolic peels are a great treatment for an instant‘pick me up’! These peels create an even and controlled shedding of our damaged skin cells as they exfoliate and stimulate the epidermal layers. The glycolic acid is a natural occurring acid, derived from the sugar cane plant. It works by dissolving the“glue’that holds these dead skin cells together. It is a very quick, pain free procedure and can be repeated as often as every 2 weeks. After the peel the skin will immediately look smoother, radiant and feel softer, all done over lunchtime!

The effect of a peel is a kind of‘spring cleaning’for your skin! Dr. Marianna Snyman

Editor: I want to tell you how hard it was to call 120 participants of the Time Out Program to let them know that Time Out was closed. A seniors program that started in 1993, 18 years it has been a place where friends meet. It had an open-door policy with a monthly calender of activities participants could choose to participate in. Activities like fun fit exercise, bingo, darts and card making to name a few, as well as a healthy lunch for $5 if they wanted to stay. Wow, what a program! We had many volunteers over the years who gladly donated their time and energy to help make the program work. Thank you so much, it was so appreciated; the program could not have run without your efforts. One and a half years years ago the majority of the program funding was cut. So many rallied and came to our aid, seeing our value but unfortunately nothing lasts forever. The seniors resources staff have worked diligently on our behalf with no success to keep the Time Out doors open. Thank you Lynda, Wanda and Ina. Also to the many business, restaurants and organizations who have supported, donated and helped us out in so many ways, we thank you so much. You gave to a fun, positive, safe place for seniors to meet. They were a part of an awesome program. We had so much fun. There are so many memories and pictures of picnics, outings in the community, bus trips, birthday parties and dancing at the Lions hall. Thank you one and all for your support. It’s so discouraging to see it all ending. And to the Time Out participants, I will miss you most of all. Take good care my friends, my prayer is that you meet

Don’t let anxiety rule your life

BY SHAWN VANDOP Promontory Community Church

D

o you ever get anxious? I do. I can easily stress out over things. I can become moody and suspicious leading me to selfmedicate on copious amounts of caffeine. People tell me to relax. They suggest I “take up yoga, aromatherapy or acupuncture,” which just stresses me out even more. There’s nothing worse for me than trying to stick my foot behind my head while smelling blue-

berry scented candles and having someone stick hundreds of pins in my body. I’ve discovered that anxiety is fueled by creating worst-case scenarios in my head and believing as if they are going to come true. It’s probably the same for you. It’s believing the worst about your financial situation, that you won’t have enough to retire on. It’s the constant worrying about your family wondering if your marriage is going to hold together or if your kids are going to make good choices. It’s stressing out over your job situation and always wondering if

you will have work next week. The bottom line is that anxiety is the fear of the future. It’s the inability to cope with the unknown. So what does God have to say about this issue? What advice does the Bible give us in regards to anxiety? Here it is: “Don’t be anxious about anything . . .” Go ahead, read that again. If you’re like me you’re probably rolling your eyes thinking, “that’s exactly why I don’t read the Bible.” It doesn’t seem very helpful does it? How can I not be anxious about anything? Obviously God has never driven my morning commute

Get Your Winter Relief Kit

t’s the cold and flu season. It seems, somebody, somewhere is always coughing, sneezing and sniffling. And with the growing strength of viruses and infectious diseases, the potential for you and your family to catch whatever is going around, is almost a given. And who wants that? When you do get sick, about the only thing recommended nowadays is that you take medication and wait it out. Unfortunately, the use of antibiotics is not showing any promise in the battle against these deadly bugs. Sadly, as with any infectious disease, including the common cold, anyone with a weakened immunity is more likely to get sick and stay sick longer. Need some support? The Winter Relief Kit is a combination of some very effective and proven homeopathic remedies -- to help strengthen your immune system and fight the symptoms of cold and the flu.

• Engystol is an immunomodulator. It supports your immune system and it has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and severity of symptoms of viral infections. And it protects you from subsequent infections.

• Brocosin Cough Syrup can be used for any type of cough associated with colds, flu, environmental contaminants, bronchitis and chest congestion. The active ingredients in Brocosin help to regulate your body's defense mechanisms. • Gripp-Heel is the ideal combination of homeopathic ingredients to effectively treat your cold and flu symptoms. It significantly reduces the duration and severity of your symptoms during an infection. The Winter Relief Kit can help you make it through the cold and flu season. D-man Jeff Einhorn lets off a shot from the blueline.

The absence of captain Brandon Manning—who remains out with a groin injury—has also hurt the man advantage which, is now ranked third best in the league after holding the top spot for most of the first half of the season. “We’ve had a lot of guys playing out of position,” said Habscheid, adding that the team needs to work harder on their breakouts. Better no trade than a bad trade, says Habscheid T h e We s t e r n H o c k e y League trade deadline came and went Monday with Habscheid, who is also the club’s general manager, standing pat. “There was lots of talk going on, but a friend of mine said, ‘Never make a bad trade just to make a trade,’” he told the Times. “We could have made a lot of trades that would have helped us this year but would have crippled us going forward.” While trading is part of his job description and required to head a successful Western Hockey League Team, it’s not one aspect that he’s fond of. “It affects people and that’s not fun but at the same time, you have to operate a business and do what’s best for the organization.”

the left wing when he was hauled down. A split-second before crashing head first into the corner, Crooks swept the puck in front of the net and right onto the stick of a streaking Sundher, who tipped it into the back of the Cougars net to put the Bruins up 1-0. Roman Horak wristed a long shot past Prince George netminder James Priestner to extend the lead heading into the second period. The two squads traded goals in the second, with Blair Wentworth potting his second of the year for Chilliwack. In the third, Jesse Z g r a g g e n’s p o i n t s h o t found its way past Priestner seven minutes in for the defenceman’s first Western Hockey League goal. Just over a minute later, Crooks went to work again. After grabbing the puck in the corner, he danced around a PG defender in the corner, cruised into the slot and slid a perfect pass across the crease and between to defenders to Ryan Howse, who deposited the disc into an open net. Despite a late Cougars power play goal, the five goals were more than enough for the Bruins, who outshot their opposition 35-24. “I thought we had good energy, we hustled a lot,” said head coach Marc Habscheid. The only flaw was the power play, which went a woeful 0-for-10 on the night, “It just seemed a little bit out of sync,” said Habscheid.

Portier said he’s proud to have made it through the first camp but that he’ll face tough competition in April. Asked about his chances, Portier said: “I really want to [make the team] but it’s going to be pretty tough.” The winners will be formed into a Team B.C., which will play against a squad from Alberta. The best players from the western provinces will then square off a team from Eastern Canada, the winner of which would play in the U-12 Final in Milan, Spain.

Jess Portier was just one of 13 players chosen to return for a second tryout for the British Columbia Danone Cup team. The Danone Cup is a worldwide tournament featuring teams from around the world. Portier, the captain for Chilliwack FC’s U11 Attack Gold squad, was the only one of seven locals who made the cut at November’s camp in Cloverdale. just awesome. The Americans had a full national all-star team, not just a regional team. There were some long faces on their coaching staff when the game was over. They said they wanted us to come back and I know what that means—they’re going to have 25 killers next year and they’re going to run it up on us.” Running back Marcus Davis of Victoria rushed for 316 yards and two touchdowns and was named game MVP.

B REAKING NEWS Read it first at chilliwacktimes.com

The under-15 game was part of the big U.S. Army All-American contest that pits the best Grade 12 players in the country against one another. There were also Grade 7 and Grade 8 East-West games. “ The whole thing was ver y impressive,” Orazietti said. “It was first class all the way. They did a full broadcast of our game and it was streamed and next year it might be on regional TV. I think they are going to take us more seriously.”

Redfern makes debut with Goldfish T

he second production of the University of the Fraser Valley Theatre department’s 2010/11 season of theatre is Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, the quirky, award-winning comedy by Canadian playwright Morris Panych. As this engaging comedy opens, we hear Iris, a precocious girl of 10 years old, state: “These are the last few days of my childhood.” Iris is certain that the recent death of her goldfish was announced by the air-raid sirens during the day’s school drill. Could the spirit of her recently departed pet be re-incarnated in the form of a lost, amnesiac drifter who suddenly appears on her doorstep without warning? Iris’s parents, trapped in the nostalgic desires of their own lost youth, are oblivious to their daughters child’s eye view of life. Girl in the Goldfish Bowl is directed by UFV theatre faculty member Joanna Redfern. Redfern marks her directorial debut for the department in taking the helm for this production. Three first-year theatre students will make their acting debuts for the department in Girl in the Goldfish Bowl: Gabby Bohmer takes the role of Iris, Rebekah Briscoe is her long-suffering mother,

Jalen Saip-Dyck and Ron Jackson appear in Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, which opens Jan. 21 at UFV.

Iris’s melancholic father, Owen, is played by Ron Jackson, last seen as Tom Snout in the March 2010 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set design for this production is by Evan Hutchinson, with costume design by Laura Auffrey and lighting design by Madison McArthur and Ali Shewan. Sound designer is Andrew Meadwell and Coleen Plenert is stage manager. ◗ Girl in the Goldfish Bowl opens Jan. 21 in the theatre on the Chilliwack campus and runs Jan. 22, 27, 28, 29 and Feb. 3, 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m., with two-reduced price previews Jan. 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 3 at noon. Joel Willoughby

Dr. Lloyd Arnett

N

ext up in Gallery 7 Theatre & Performing Arts’ Theatre Side Chat Series is a talk called “Faith & Theatre: Merging the Arts with Faith.” The event is the second of three chats and will be held Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the House of James in Abbotsford. Led by Dr. Lloyd Arnett, a professor in Trinity Western University’s arts, media and culture department, the evening will also feature the musical talents of local artist, Joel Willoughby. “Theatre Side Chat is a series of casual evenings featuring music, refreshments and stimulating discussions related to the magic, power and role of theatre,” said Gallery 7 Theatre’s executive artistic director Ken Hildebrandt. “It’s an opportunity for the public to come out to the House of James, pull up a chair, enjoy a steaming brew of their favorite coffee, and participate in an evening of groovy music and an inspiring discussion about the arts.” Over the centuries, the church has maintained a love/hate relationship with theatre. At times, it has embraced it as a powerful way to communicate gospel truths, and at others, it has rejected it as a flashpoint for heresy, sinful behaviour and the spread of disease. Yet, theatre has the incredibility ability to engage our hearts, souls and minds, to explore themes that attempt to make sense of our human experience and our relationship to God. “Faith & Theatre: Merging the Arts & Faith” will be a crash theological course in how theatre can supplement our faith journey. Is there such a thing as a Christian theatre? Is there a

difference between secular and religious theatre? Can arts and faith work together? These are just some of the questions to be explored in this stimulating evening. Leading the discussion will be Lloyd Arnett. A Christian-humanist theatre scholar, Dr. Arnett teaches theatre history and literature, playwriting, performance, and courses in the integration of faith-and-theatre. A prolific director, his recent productions have included The Glass Menagerie, Cotton Patch Gospel, and his own work, Angels. His articles and reviews have appeared in various journals and he has just completed editing the anthology, Angels and Other Plays for the Church. Musical guest is local singer and songwriter, Joel Willoughby. Willoughby has been writing and performing in various bands for more than 15 years, spending many years drumming for critically acclaimed Vancouver band Maplewood Lane. He has shared the stage at folk fests, clubs and coffeehouses around the Northwest U.S. and Canada. He’s released two solo albums: Closer to Home and Do You Have Something to Say? Songs from both albums have been featured on the CBC television show Heartland and have been played on college radio in Canada and the US. ◗ “Faith & Theatre: Merging the Arts with Faith” takes place Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the House of James, at 2743 Emerson Street in Abbotsford. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Coffee and snacks will be available through the store’s coffee shop. For more information visit www.gallery7theatre. com or call 604-504-5940.

Parkside an eco star BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

or a luxurious and ecofriendly getaway that isn’t that far away, Parkside Victoria Resort & Spa is an exceptional choice. Parkside is nestled in the heart of Victoria within view of the harbour and the legislature, with the city’s diverse array of restaurants just steps away. Parkside has to be about as environmentally friendly as a resort can possibly be, while offering the best of a hotel/spa for a one-night or weekend stay. And if you really like the resort, you can buy in and make it a home away from home with quarter ownership of one of the 126 fully furnished oneand two-bedroom suites. We arrived at Parkside for one night as part of another trip in the capital city area. Our one-bedroom suite was well-appointed with full kitchen, granite countertops, a 42inch LCD TV, and other amenities we would never have time to fully appreciate. The luxurious king-sized bed nearly filled a small bedroom, but with

Spa and resort even has electric charging stations in its garage top-end en suite bathroom finishing and a balcony facing out over the city the setting was ideal. My wife, baby and I put on our robes and headed down to the 25metre ozonated pool and hot tub, an amazing treat on a cool day. I’d never seen an ozonated pool before but to avoid the stinging eyes from chlorine was an utter relief. After a swim I took on the hardship of a one-hour massage at the AquaTerre spa at Parkside—a spa that offers full services from manicures to pedicures to “Canadian Maple Butter Wraps.” Beyond the pool and the spa, Parkside features an exclusive penthouse city club lounge, 7,000-square-feet of rooftop patios, rooftop gardens and indoor botanical gardens, a 29-seat high definition private movie theatre, a fitness centre, meeting rooms, concierge, bicycle storage facilities and heated underground parking. Parkside even has technology for vehicles that you don’t even own yet: electric charging stations in the

garage. The Pearson family purchased the property next to the site of the old St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2004 and came up with a design concept to fit in aesthetically with St. Joseph’s and the surrounding neighbourhood. The project was completed in the summer of 2009 and is Canada’s first resort hotel built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification standards. All suites feature Energy Star-rated appliances; there is water-effiicient gardening and landscaping including use of native and drought-tolerant plants; water-saving plumbing fixtures; indoor air quality monitored with CO2 sensors; and flow-through natural air conditioning. Parkside is a resort that is also a condo that is also a hotel, and which offers an exceptional eco-vacation or weekend living experience. ◗ To see more visit www.parksidevictoria.com.

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Ernie Peters at his home on January 11, 2011. Ernie was born in Greendale BC where he was raised and worked most of his life in the Chilliwack area as a logger in the forestry industry working in the Chilliwack Lake area and other parts of the Fraser Valley. On November 5, 1955 Ernie was married to Carol and they began to raise their own family. Ernie was an avid camper and fisherman, he enjoyed feeding the Joncos and other birds on his backyard deck. In his retirement Ernie started building and selling Whirley-gigs and you could always hear the hum of one saw or another on a warm summer day. Ernie is survived by his loving wife Carol of 55 years, his sons Ken Peters (Treva), Gary Peters (Cheryl) and his daughter Patti Ferguson (Jim) and by Ernie and Carol’s grandchildren Jeremie Peters (Candice and daughter Alexis), Kyla Peters (Greg), Tiffany Peters and Alexander Peters, Ernie is also survived by his sister Irene Paquette, his many cousins as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews living around the province. Ernie was predeceased by his parents Frank and Martha and his brother Dave. Ernie will be missed by all of us and each of us will remember him in our own way. There will be no service by request, in lieu of flowers donations maybe made to the charity of your choice. A family and friends gathering honouring Ernie will be held this coming spring.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious to Wednesday – last-minute advances (especially Sunday and Wednesday) can be strong ones. You might have to struggle with foundational, home or family issues, though. The government, head office or an institution could offer splendid help Wednesday. (Take power naps Monday/Tuesday.) A month of social joys, friends, entertainment, flirtation (that can build to deep love) optimism and joie de vivre begins Thursday! And four months of great good luck starts Saturday, in love, travel, law, education. You’re on a roll! But settle into chores Friday eve, Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: A long, mellow period draws to a close. You might face – but more likely your close friends, associates face – a pulling apart between key people Monday/Tuesday. (E.g., your friends split up.) This is mostly gradual, deep: but look for clues, and seek early “accommodations,” as this is a decade-long trend. You might have to choose between love and casual friendship. Rest, tend to home matters Wednesday eve to Friday morn. A month of ambition begins Thursday (but first rest, to Friday). Romance, pleasure visit Friday eve, Saturday. Saturday to June 4, “head office” is your friend. Gemini May 21-June 20: Continue to chase facts/secrets, investments and sensual desires to Wednesday noon. You energy’s high Sunday. Buy nothing (nor invest) Monday nor Tuesday before 5 p.m. (PST). Thursday begins a month of gentle love, understanding, legal solutions, far travel, higher education or intellectual pursuits and publishing. Be curious Wednesday to Friday, ask questions. Friday eve and Saturday bring rest, domestic affairs, quietude. But Saturday also starts four months of social expansion, new friends, flirtations, wish fulfilment and happiness! And these four months kick off another 92!

Cancer June 21-July 22: A long month of opportunity and opposition ends Thursday. You probably feel you didn’t accomplish much, as this period began in confusion. But you have Sunday (planning) and Monday to Wednesday (action) to grab some last chance(s). Remember, independence, no; interdependence, yes – for now. Thursday begins a month of secrets, research (detective work) large finances, investments, lifestyle, health and sexual changes and commitments. And Saturday kicks off a period, through early June, of tremendous career and prestige benefits – both trends (change and career luck) combine soon! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Sunday’s happy, optimistic, friendly. But heavy chores still weigh on you through Wednesday. Just plunge in, get ’em done. DON’T start a new work project Monday or before 5 p.m. Tuesday. A month of fresh horizons (and emotional fresh air) arrives Wednesday night. You’ll experience opposition and opportunity – both intense. So be diplomatic yet eager. Saturday begins a four-month phase of great luck in far travel, higher education, publishing, legal affairs, cultural venues and love. You might fall in love and marry – swiftly! Focus on money, spending, earning Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be ambitious Sunday, or mingle with higher-ups. A month of romance and creativity draws to a close by midweek. Take care with friends, hopes, plans Monday to Tuesday suppertime – pursue all these afterward. Retreat, rest and contemplate your future Wednesday afternoon to Friday morning. Despite your uncertainty about job performance/stability, all looks fine. You begin a month of work and health issues Thursday. More importantly, you enter a four-month phase of great luck in investments, sexual liaisons, life changes and commitments, Saturday. (A clue Wednesday eve.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Sunday’s wise, mellow. Your ambition surges Monday to Wednesday, but take care with this Monday. Tuesday has obstacles to overcome (involving home or career foundations) but you can succeed – especially after supper and into Wednesday lunchtime. Thursday brings a month of celebration, optimism, flirtation, entertainment and social joys! Even better, Saturday starts a four-month phase of lucky opportunities, especially in marriage, love and relocation. Enjoy yourself WednesdayFriday, but Friday eve and this weekend, retreat, rest and contemplate: significant times loom! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: A restless, social month is ending. Thursday starts four weeks of quiet contemplation, physical sluggishness and domestic affairs. Sink into these, rest and refresh your soul, as February to June will bring a huge pile of work. Sunday’s mysterious; you might sense someone’s secret. This is a good, stable day to invest, work out a budget, or hold a private conversation. Monday to Wednesday is mellow, but holds barriers and problems before 5 p.m. (PST) Tuesday – and succeeds after that, especially in legal, educational and romantic arenas. Be ambitious Wednesday eve to Friday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You can find out where you stand with a crucial person Sunday. Financial and sexual obstacles arise Monday to dusk Tuesday; solutions appear after this, through Wednesday mid-day. A mellow, understanding mood steals over you Wednesday eve to Friday – love, intellectual pursuits thrive. Thursday starts a month of travel and communications, errands, emails, details, paperwork. More exciting, Saturday begins four months of great luck in romance, creative projects, far travel, with children and speculative projects. You’ll be offered happiness! Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday.

Jan. 16 - Jan. 22 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Tackle chores Sunday: pick the ones that will free you for more ambitious projects later. Relationships confront you Monday to Wednesday. These contain some opposition and frustrations through twilight Tuesday, then generate healing, solutions – and love – after that. Chase mysteries Wednesday eve to Friday morning – research, invest, study lifestyle changes, get your health diagnosed. Thursday’s fortunate. This day begins a month of money – buy, sell, seek more lucrative clients. Saturday begins a four-month stretch of great luck in real estate, home, family and security issues. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Romance – of a quiet, stable kind – or kids or creative pleasures – call Sunday. Be careful with chores Monday to Tuesday twilight. The danger: wasted effort. Tasks speed swiftly to conclusions Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday ends a month of weariness, solitude and obligations, as it starts four weeks of surging energy, heightened charisma and effective action! Start important projects soon, ask favours, show yourself off! (But first be diplomatic Thursday/Friday, and “sense secrets” Friday/Saturday.) Saturday begins four months of travel, talk and much paperwork. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Spend Sunday at home or in nature – all is restful, steady, quietly inspiring. Take care with romance, creative projects and gambles Monday to Tuesday dusk – these are fine, even lucky, then to Wednesday mid-day. (An 18-month “dead end” in romantic and creative zones ends this March.) Thursday begins a month of obligations, lowered energy and dealings with “head office.” Now to late February, rest, be charitable, contemplate and make plans for the future. Work smart, not hard. Saturday starts a four-month period of money luck – maybe big money luck! All things weave together. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
