ithin one randomly selected square foot of Wayne Learie’s Wellington Emporium a person can find: a pair of snowshoes; a plastic machine-gun toting gangster; a piano; and a rare Batman pedal car. It’s that diverse array of, well, stuff that drew a new reality show—Canadian Pickers—to Chilliwack and the Emporium, where it shot its season finale earlier this week. Pickers, for those who aren’t, are kind of like travelling salespeople, except instead of selling vacuums, pickers go door-to-door buying antiques and other long-buried re-sellables. Learie, who grew up on Vancouver Island, was just such a person for 25 years. After a year spent working at a Kelowna auction house (alongside an auctioneer named Stockwell Day), Learie embarked for Eastern Canada and New York State. Learie tells the story best (and in one breath): “I was a professional picker, a cold door knocker, someone who went doort o - d o o r, would

Woman sexually assaulted

o u n t i e s a re a d v i s i n g women walking alone to use caution after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted while walking on Young Road Wednesday evening. Police say a 21-year-old woman was walking north on Young around 7:45 p.m. when she noticed a man following her. The man commented on the woman’s body, continued to follow her and exposed himself to her. The suspect was described as being a white man, about 20 years old, with short blonde hair and blue eyes. He was reported to be five-feet tall and of stocky build. Mounties are asking the public for help identifying the supspect. “Given the time of day, there was likely a high volume of traffic,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Police issued a plea for John Dixon on Thursday after the Chilliwack man never arrived in Calgary, to where he had planned to drive in order to visit family. Just hours later, police were notified that he had been located in Chilliwack. On Tuesday night, Marc Craig Colman was found “safe and sound” in Chilliwack just days after the RCMP issued a public call for information on the 50year-old man.

Whiz kid wins prize S

ardis secondary student Rachael Schroots is all set to cruise the Mediterranean, climb Machu Picchu and hobnob with Spanish royalty this summer—all compliments of the Spanish government. Last month Schroots—a French immersion student in her second year of Spanish at Sardis—won a $17,000 bursary for La Ruta Quetzal BBVA 2011, a six-week, cultural expedition to Spain and Latin America that annually involves more than 200 youth from around the world. Only one Canadian applicant is chosen per year, and the onerous application process, which requires students to submit a historical, literary, artistic or musical work in Spanish on one of six topics, took Schroots four months to complete. She stuck with it, she said, because she was inspired by YouTube posts of last year’s trek. “I want to be there. I want to do this,” she said to herself after seeing the videos. “They got to do a lot of really cool

things.” This year’s expedition will tour Peru and Spain and include advanced courses in language, sociology and anthropology, as well as well as an introduction to the King and Queen of Spain. The winning project that secured Schroots her spot is a multimedia creation about a pre-Aztec civilization in Peru called the Moche people. It’s a faux-leather-bound box, shaped to look like a book, which contains a 3-D model of a Moche village, six Moche figurines and a fiveand-a-half-page fictional journal by a Spanish explorer who finds his way to pre-Columbian Peru via Egypt (all written in Spanish, of course). Besides winning her the prize, the project was also a learning experience. “Her journal writing took her to a level that I don’t even teach in Spanish 12,” said Sardis Spanish teacher Paola Blaak. “She was a Spanish 11 student, and because of her need to express herself in written form, she actually

covered material that is university-level language learning.” The budding polyglot now looks forward to honing her Spanish skills even further on the trip as she will be surrounded by Spanish-speaking youth from 53 different countries. “It’ll be a little bit intimidating because there’s so much slang and because Spanish slang differs between each region,” she said, “but I’m very excited to try and learn all these different slangs and get to learn these different accents.” While she’s looking forward to seeing exotic places, she’s especially happy to get a chance to travel with so many young people who share her interests in travel, language and culture. “I’m very excited to see Peru and Spain, but I think it’s exciting to go with them,” she said.

What is the best way to tell if a school is doing a good job? Fraser Institute’s director of school performance studies, in a press release on Monday. If it’s unfair and misleading to rank schools based on standardized tests, what is the best way to tell if a school is doing a good job? The Chilliwack Times set out to answer that question this week by asking people in the education community one question: What is the best way to tell if a school is doing a good job? Here’s what they had to say:

hilliwack’s public elementary schools have been judged and found wanting this week in the Fraser Institute’s Report Card on Elementary schools, which annually organizes B.C. elementary schools into academic winners and losers based on province-wide standardized tests that gauge reading writing and numeracy. Fifteen of Chilliwack’s 17 public schools were ranked below their fiveyear averages, and five local schools rank in the bottom tenth percentile in the province. One bright spot, according to the report, is East Chilliwack elementary, which was listed as the 18th most improved school in B.C. over the past five years. Every year B.C. teachers condemn the Fraser Institute’s rankings as demoralizing and unfair while school district officials dismiss the report card because they say the data it uses are incomplete and the methodology flawed. But the Fraser Institute argues its report card helps parents identify which schools are doing well from year to year. “The Fraser Institute report card is the only easily accessible, objective tool that helps them identify whether schools are meeting students’ academic needs,” said Peter Cowley, the

The ‘M’ label is a warning said the police that “middle-aged drivers need to be vigilant when it comes to driving behaviour.” A riff on this stunt in the Globe & Mail produced driving labels for all the remaining unused letters of the alphabet.

Now it’s official

hilliwack’s MLAs officially announced $3 million in provincial government funding to purchase the Day’s Inn on Young Road to create a housing and health centre to address homelessness in a press release Thursday morning. The site for the long-awaited health contact centre was first reported by the Times in the Feb. 4 edition soon after the city’s rezoning application sign was put up on the property. When notified of the property’s future as a centre for homeless, addicted and mentally ill men and women, one neighbouring business owner said he was surprised and that he would oppose the development. The provincial government has signed a contract to purchase the building from the owner of the Day’s Inn. The deal has a subject condition removal date of March 31, with a closing date of May 3. The application for rezoning from tourist commercial to a new R9 Supportive Housing and Health Contact Centre zone is scheduled to come to city council at the Feb. 15 meeting.

Surrey-based Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS) will operate the centre and will be one of the agencies providing services. Established in 1984, PCRS provides special education, employment, addiction counselling, prevention services, housing and cultural enrichment services at locations between Vancouver to Chilliwack. If given introduction and first reading at city council’s Feb. 15 meeting, a public hearing will be called for March 1. “Our $3 million provincial contribution will cover the property purchase and renovations to the existing building,” said Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner in the release, which was issued by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and the Minister Responsible for Housing. “Now that a property has been found, we can move on to the next steps of getting these housing and health care services in place for people in need.” PCRS director Laurie Birdsall told the Times on Feb. 3 the organization has not had difficulties with neighbours at similar facilities in the past and, because of the long-term, community-driven nature of Chiliwack’s health contact centre, he is optimistic there will be support.

Computers don’t think or care J

ust a moment. I’ll be right with you. AAARRRRRRGHHH!!!! There. That’s better. They may be monstrous spawn of the devil—probably conceived during one of the Dark Master’s darkest moments, in fact—but computers do not normally scare me. I am not completely computerilliterate. I recognize the value of computers as tools. A number of my friends and associates sometimes actually come to me for advice when they’re having computer problems—that, despite the fact that I don’t believe I’ve ever actually solved a real problem. I just seem to have a knack for looking competent while smiling knowingly, and since they don’t know any more than I do, that air of confidence makes them feel like I’ve accomplished something. I don’t feel terribly competent today. The problem is that, sometimes when you work with these beasts a lot, you start to believe that they think. They don’t. Computers are not smart. In fact, they are not even stupid. They just are—sort of the way shovels just are. Or hammers. Or note pads. Or bulldozers. Or any tool.

Be Our Guest These days you can talk to computers, and they seem to listen. They will repeat your words in print, or they will “obey” simple commands. Some talk back. But that still doesn’t make them smart. Or stupid. And, I have to remind myself today, it doesn’t make them malicious, either. They just are. They have no emotions. They have no more sense of what they are doing for you than a hammer does. Nor do they have any sense of what you are doing. That’s why they will do whatever you ask of them. Even if your head feels like it’s full of sawdust because there’s a flu bug in there gnawing away at the inside of your skull, chewing up any stray thoughts that, on a better day, might attempt to escape into the real world. Computers don’t care about any of that stuff. They don’t care about you. They don’t care about anything. They just go right ahead and fol-

low any thoughtless or impetuous command you order of them. Even if your command is downright stupid. Even if your command is to have them to do something that you didn’t really mean for them to do. Something really dumb. Even a particularly dumb dog would look at you for a moment, before refusing to do something really stupid. But computers obey unquestioningly. And they’re fast! You can wipe out a whole day’s work in just a few billionths of a second. Do you realize how short a few billionths of a second can be? And yet, even in that short space of time, your heart can skip an entire beat, and a blast of adrenaline can rush out past your elbows and right into your fingertips—signalling stupidity. Too late. That’s how fast they are. You can blame nebulous cosmic interference, or you can blame a flu bug, or you can even (perhaps in a weak moment) blame yourself. But in the end, it is your own stupidity, not the computer’s. Computers aren’t smart. But they aren’t stupid. his week, everyone has gotten at least a small chuckle out of the cat signed up as a BC Liberal member. If it was taken seriously, this feline voter could prompt promises of taxfree fancy feast from the top candidates. This kind of prank, or sabotage, is inevitable when the parties are in furious preelection mode. The Liberals have sworn to sign up more than 35,000 new members during their race, roughly doubling the size of their party. The NDP has already closed its membership sign-ups, but thousands of new members have no doubt jumped aboard. Still, these party members are but the barest fraction of the population of B.C. Yet between them, they’ll determine the next one or two premiers of our province. Many people have no inclination to become a member of a political party. They may be disinterested, or simply find neither party to be a good fit. Those of us who are members of neither party have a series of binary decisions facing us in the next few years. Is it worth it to vote at all? Do we vote based on our local candidates or on the promises of the party leaders? Do we vote Liberal or NDP? Major party or third party alternative? But the choices of leaders, who can do so much to shape this province’s destiny, will be out of our hands. While political leaders urge us to vote, another way to be heard is to stay outside of the political process, and advocate for important issues. Whether it’s education or health care, policing or farming, the province has a great deal of power. As the potential leaders criss-cross the province, make your voice heard. Talk to friends, co-workers, fellow parents at your school, the members of your hockey team. Write letters to newspapers and MLAs. Start a petition, donate to an advocacy group. Educate yourself. Voting, for either a party leader or an elected official, is just the visible tip of democracy. It’s supported—and dwarfed—by the work of hundreds of thousands of people of good conscience.

Apparently she had been crying, trying to live and a lady was there and looked at the appalling scene, all the aborted babies, and took her from where she had been placed to die. This lady cared for her, got her stabilized, loved and raised her, tuned her into a very nice young lady. Now you tell me, what is worse? Dogs are wonderful, I love them, but do we get such an uproar when hundreds of babies get slaughtered? Babies are human beings, that are complete: fingers hair, toes little ears, nose within a few months. All I can say, is God help us. Then the two ladies, Jennifer and Nichole that stated Ms. Kathleen McCune was judging others. Romans, Chapter 1-18-32, in the Bible speaks so clearly even a young child can understand. She (K. McCune) did not do the judging, but the word of God cuts deep and judges us. God loves everyone dearly, but he does not love the sins we commit. I love gays, I have people very close to me that say they were born that way. God made us in the likeness of Himself, in his image, (male and female he created them) Genesis Chapter 1:26-31. We were not born thieves, murderers, liars, we were born in sin because of Adam and Eve, but we choose from birth, and what we choose we become. Jesus made a way out for us, by shedding his blood, and when we accept that, ask Him into our lives, we have the strength to make the right choices. Rereading the Bible, as you say,

Still silent over other murders Editor: Killing dogs? Senseless, irrational, tragic, worthy of death, incomprehensible, criminal, vigilante action required, international shame, etc. Killing babies? Silence and so much more silence. Whilst the media hordes are in a crazed frenzy report all the gruesome, sensational details of this event, (truly an incomprehensible, tragic event worthy of investigation and/or punishment), and whilst the outraged public clamour over one another to make the details even more sensational, one has to ponder the magnitude of the reaction. Consider for a moment: If you are so angry over the senseless killing of these dogs, with whom you have no direct link, how angry do you think the Almighty God is over the senseless, tragic, incomprehensible slaughter of thousands upon thousands of the little children He created. Your silence makes you as culpable as the perpetrator of the alleged dog kill. God’s righteous anger is not to be ignored and one day the penalty will be paid. Speak up for the helpless dogs unable to speak for themselves? Absolutely! Speak up for the helpless children unable to speak for themselves? Your eternal destination might hinge upon it. Kempers heads for Winter Games

ardis speed skater and allround sports phenom Robyn Kempers will represent British Columbia next week at her first Canada Winter Games. Kempers left Thursday for Halifax, where she will skate in 500-, 1,000and 1,500-metre events against Canada’s best young skaters. The 17-year-old Sardis secondary student—she also captains Sardis’s basketball team, plays softball and runs track—earned an alternate spot after placing third at the second of two qualifying competitions earlier this year. She got the nod to skate after a friend who had qualified ahead of her elected to skate in the Winter Games’ long track event. Kempers was excited for her friend, but not shocked that she had been bumped up to the main team.

“We knew she was trying out for both and we knew she would most likely make the long-track team beforehand so we had a good idea before the competition.” Now that she has booked her ticket to the big event, Kempers hopes to finish in the top 10. She will compete in three events—at the 500-, 1,000-, and 1,500-metre distances—with the 1,000 being her bread and butter. In short-track speed skating multiple competitors, often as many as six, race at the same time around a track no larger than that of a North American hockey surface. With its mix of strategy, drafting and contact, the sport has been likened to stock car racing on ice. That’s all part of the thrill for Kempers, who started skating with the Sardis Fliers after noticing an ad in the

paper. Kempers said that every race is different, with the 500-metre more of a sprint and the 1,500-metre requiring more strategy and even teamwork between competing skaters. “If you know you have someone in your race you can work with, you’ll make a plan with them,” she said. “For the 500, it’s pretty much just hard off the line. For the 1,000 it’s a little bit more chatty because it’s nine laps and most people can’t sprint it and win the race at the same time, so you have to be able to know when to initiate the pack and . . . start actually racing instead of drafting off the pack.” Kempers began racing at the age of nine and, within a year, had already won a medal at a regional competition. Now she’s an assistant coach with the Sardis Fliers and knows that as she races in Nova Scotia, she’ll

have a whole squad of young skaters cheering her on across the country. It’s a feeling she can relate to. “I know I always looked up to my teenage coaches; they were a big inspiration,” she told the Times. “So I have lots of little kids who are saying ‘good luck Robyn!’” The Winter Games is the last major event on Kempers’s calendar. She has already competed in the Junior National championship, where she finished 28th out of all skaters 19 and under in the country, despite being just 16 at the time. While she would eventually like to compete for her country on the world stage, she first hopes to make the Junior World Championships—she’ll need to finish fifth or better at the Junior Nationals—and progress from there. “My main goal right now is junior worlds—of course the Olympics, obviously—but right now it’s smaller steps.”

hilliwack Bruins captain Brandon Manning will miss the next six games after being suspended for a hit that broke a vertebrae in the neck of a Kamloops Blazers defenceman last Friday. Manning was suspended indefinitely immediately following the hit and missed last Saturday’s game against the Blazers. On Wednesday, the length of his suspension was set by the Western Hockey League at seven games. f you think the hockey players on your TV look bigger and faster and stronger and more skilled than they did 20 years ago, you’re not mistaken. And now that today’s NHLers are more formidable than ever, the young pucksters who strive to reach the pinnacle of this nation’s most popular sport are pouring more time, effort and money into perfecting their game and their bodies. The result is a personal training industry—in Chilliwack and across Canada—that would be unfathomable 20 years, when many of today’s trainers were playing junior. “The NHL is really strong and it’s because of that sort of new age of athlete who is coming through [and] who is training,” said Valley Sports Zone co-owner Erin Thornton, who played with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL and Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL in the early ’90s. “When I was going through, we were doing the bench press and the arm curls and that type of thing—then you go to training camp and get in cardio shape. Now, these kids, the season is a little bit longer and the training is unique and sports-specific.” Take the Chilliwack Bruins’ Kevin Sundher for example. He began working with his personal trainer four years ago, before he had even been drafted into the Western Hockey League. “I wanted to get bigger and stronger,” he said. “When you get to the Western League everybody’s [training] and I just felt, [that while] I could have done that by myself, it’s good to have a good structure and plan in place with an experienced trainer.” Now, Sundher works not only with his personal trainer, but with Bruins’ strength and conditioning coach Rick Webber, who lays out year-long programs for every Bruin and Bruin prospect, based on what improvements the team would like to see. Training is even more crucial now for those between the pipes. There was a day when goalies were shoved in net with no more advice than “stop the puck.” That was the approach when Sean Douglas was playing junior and high level hockey in the early ’80s. “Essentially, we would go to our summer hockey schools and even there, though they would give us the guise that there would be a goalie coach, typically it would be a college player or former NHLer who would stand

there and watch us,” said Douglas. “We really didn’t have a whole lot of specific goaltending coaches.” In the early-to-mid 1990s that changed and today Douglas, who works out of Goalline Hockey Training Centre, is one of dozens, if not hundreds, of goalie coaches in Canada. The development of new goalie styles—like Patrick Roy’s butterfly—put an emphasis on technique and positioning, rather than reflexes, and sparked the move to high-level coaching. And as pro goaltenders have plugged their holes, the young and up-and-coming netminders who aspire to make the big leagues have had to keep pace. A similar race to the top has spurred a move towards intense one-on-one and elite coaching for skaters. Now most junior and almost all professional players work with personal trainers in the off-season. That extra work can pay dividends when it comes to a race for a puck or a battle along the boards. “A coach who has the ability to break a player’s stride and teach edge control will increase the players speed and quickness at a much faster rate than working with an entire team,” explained Xceed Training’s Paul Nicolls in an e-mail to the Times. Nicolls works one-onone with elite athletes and also played for the Chiefs in the early ’90s. While team training is important, he said that for personal fitness and skating, one-on-one training “will always be more effective.” Of course, all that training comes at a cost. Some is borne by minor hockey organizations and junior teams. But players, especially the younger ones, often pay their way. Douglas and other goalie coaches offer free clinics throughout the year for minor hockey netminders. Thornton, meanwhile, said that his new facility is trying to keep costs down in order to appeal to a wide range of athletes. But there’s no doubt that a young athlete has a better shot at achieving his dreams if his parents have money. “The more financial resources that a family may have to put towards training, it’s going to show at some point,” said Douglas. That said, training every waking hour throughout childhood doesn’t guarantee a shot at the pros. “I believe the more training you receive will increase your chances to get to the higher levels,” wrote Nicolls, “but if your don’t absolutely love and enjoy the game and have passion for it at some point even the most skilled players lose interest in playing.”

riverside property in the Chilliwack River Valley has been donated to the Abbotsford-based Fraser Valley Conservancy (FVC) by the FraserValley Regional District (FVRD). The property, at 48513 Auchenway Rd., will be used for conservation purposes in perpetuity and connects Crown land to provincial parkland. “Through the restoration of both aquatic and terrestrial habitats, a very significant wildlife corridor connecting Crown land to provincial parkland will be created and maintained,” said Ashley Peters of the FVC. The FVC said the property and adjacent area is home to several species at risk, one of which may be the Coastal Giant Salamander. Because of a mudslide two years ago the Auchenway property had been deemed unsafe for residential use,

Maintaining both middle schools at or above 500 students is important for maintaining programs and continuity in staffing, according to McCabe. Changing Yarrow’s catchment made sense, she said, because the students there are already being bused and, coming from a small school, would fit in well with students from Mount Slesse’s other small feeder schools like Cultus Lake elementary and Greendale elementary. If the change goes through, this year’s Yarrow Grade 6 students would head to Mount Slesse in September while their older brothers and sisters stay at Vedder. Besides busing issues and conflicting school events, parents raised concerns

about a loss of support for their kids. “Right now what’s scary to a lot of kids and parents is that there’s such a support group already at Vedder,” said one parent. While Heisler assured parents Grade 7 students are well supported at his school through programs like multi-graded advisory classes, McCabe acknowledged the change would create some social dislocation for Yarrow students. “They won’t have their older brothers and sisters or friends in the older grades at Yarrow,” she said, “and that is one of the challenges. You have to acknowledge that.” Despite some enthusiastic input from Mount Slesse teachers, who talked up their school’s academic programs and extra-curricular clubs, some Yarrow parents at Tuesday’s meeting said they planned to oppose the change before it goes before trustees at a board of education meeting on Feb. 22.

Pickers often run into elderly homeowners who may not fully grasp the value of their seemingly worthless furniture. But Learie says that pickers exploit such people at their own risk. “If you don’t have a good reputa-

tion, nobody brings you nothing,” says Learie. Fair pickers, he said, will tell homeowners what price they will sell the desired antique for. “A lot of times when you’re picking you’re running into seniors right? And people are trusting your knowledge, right?” says Learie. “If they say, ‘What’s this worth?’ and something’s worth $1,000 and somebody says ‘$50,’ they’re being dishonest with them. “The way to do it is to say, ‘This is worth $1,000, I can pay $500. I have to make money. I buy and sell. And

alentine’s is just a few short days away. It’s a day where people express their love by spending millions of dollars on cards, flowers and chocolate all to celebrate the most misunderstood decision that anyone could make. I know, most people think of love as a feeling or an emotion—which I’ll admit play an important role—but they do not define love. I learned a long time ago that lasting love is a choice not a feeling. Let me explain. Just over 16 years ago I married my wife. Up to that moment our love was very emotional. I would think of her and my heart would beat faster and my feelings of love would overwhelm me. No way did I ever think of hav-

Begin choosing love ing to choose to love her because my feelings for her were strong enough to keep us going (cue Barry White). Then we got married. I quickly discovered that the love we felt for each other could lose its lustre. In fact, after only a few days of marriage my wife began making a daily decision to love me that still continues to this day. You see, each morning when she rolls over and sees me with those dried crusty things in my eyes, the drool on my pillow, and gets a whiff of my dreadful morning breath, she still tells me that she

tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8). That means that he doesn’t just show love, he is the very definition of love. In 1 Corinthians 13 we are given the description of love, which also gives us a clear picture of God. It says that love is patient, kind, not jealous nor proud. It’s not demanding, irritable and keeps no record of wrongs. It never gives up, it never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance. It is a love that never fails. Who wouldn’t want to be loved like that? I am so glad that God does not

loves me—but it’s not because she “feels” it. At that moment her love is clearly a decision. The truth is my wife and I do not always “feel” love for each other, but that does not negate our love for one another. We’ve learned the truth that lasting love is always fueled by the decision to love. It’s actually our decision to love that feeds our feelings and fires up our emotions. To know that someone’s love goes beyond just feelings is to create a relationship that is secure and healthy. It’s to learn to love others like God loves us. The Bible

love us only when he feels like it. It is very comforting to know that the God of the universe chooses to love us no matter what we’ve done or who we are. What if you embraced God’s way of loving and extended it to those in your life? What if when your wife ticks you off, you choose to love her? What if when your husband disappoints you, you make the decision to love? What if you decided this Valentine’s Day to commit to practising a love that never fails? Instead of just feeling love, why not begin choosing love? bbotsford’s Gallery 7 Theatre & Performing Arts Society presents its third workshop of the 2010/2011 theatre season: Playwriting, with Vancouver-based playwright, Lucia Frangione, on Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn how to brainstorm, pre-write, develop characters, write dialogue, prepare a script for performance and more. This workshop is perfect for writers looking for input on an existing work, for writers who may be thinking about writing a play and for writers looking to expand their general skills. “It’s not often that a workshop of this kind with a facilitator of this calibre and with so much experience comes along,” says Ken Hildebrandt, the theatre’s executive artistic director. “This is a very rare opportunity for both the budding and experienced playwrights to gain some valuable knowledge about the ins and outs of writing a play.” Frangione is an award-winning playwright who has extensive experience seeing her plays produced and published. She is best known for performing her own works, including Paradise Garden, Espresso, MMM, Cariboo Magi, Chickens and Holy Mo! She is the recipient of the Gordon Armstrong and Sydney Risk playwright awards. Espresso was nominated for seven Jessie awards and toured Western Canada in 2004. Her 18 plays have been produced by theatres such as The Stanley, The Belfry, Ruby Slippers, Solo Collective, Chemanius Theatre and Prairie Theatre Exchange. She is published by Talon Books and is on the Board of the Playwright’s Canada Press and the Playwright’s Guild of Canada. erengue music comes to Harrison Hot Springs as the Harrison Festival Society presents Joaquin Diaz and his band on Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Harrison Memorial Hall. Diaz, one of the best of a new breed of traditional merengue artist, is originally from the Dominican Republic and is now based in Canada. His repertoire is a mixture of traditional and original tunes that is characterized by its exhilarating syncopated rhythms, the diatonic accordion and his infectious vocals. Forced to earn a living at the age of nine, he

became a musician playing on the streets in Santo Domingo. Still in his teens, he performed at the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico that led him to play at the presidential home for the then President Joaquin Balaguer. BELL, Brenda Louise

(nee Felzien) passed away peacefully at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack on Feb 4, 2011 at the age of 55. Brenda will be lovingly missed and remembered by her son Shannon (Alicia); daughters Danni, Terri and Kelli; mother Leona, and many siblings, cousins, extended family and friends. Brenda will always be cherished for her natural skills as a mother and caregiver to her family, and also to the community as an R.N. The family is very grateful for the care and compassion provided by Dr. Lisa Legresley, Cascade Hospice and the entire staff of the Chilliwack ER. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 on Mon. Feb 14, 2011 at First Ave Christian Assembly (46510 First Ave, Chilliwack BC). August 5, 1952 - February 7, 2011 With heavy hearts the family is devastated to announce the sudden passing of a beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Companion & Friend. Ingnace John Poittris was tragically taken in a work-related accident at the age of 58 outside Fort McMurray. Ingnace worked over 30 years in the pipeline industry and did it all for his boys. He was the epitome of a true man. He did what had to be done to provide for his family without ever complaining. He was born in Vancouver, BC and then became a long-term resident of Chilliwack, although he spent a lot of his time working on the pipelines across Canada. Ingnace was survived by his loving sons, Nathan (Karen), Dareld (Courtney), Darsell (Lacey), Dean, mother of his children, Buryl Poittris, precious grandchildren, Ethan, Bobbi, Carter, Jaylee & Jayce, sisters Moneca (Larry), Mary and brother Pat (Dulcie). Missed terribly by Sue Stoten, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends & co-workers. Ingnace was predeceased by his father and mother, brothers and sister and his loving family dog, Arnold and many squirrels! We love you Dad and always will, we did in life, in death we do still. Each morning we start with a broken heart, but carry on daily playing our part. On you Dad we knew we could depend. You helped us along. If we walk in your footsteps, we ll never go wrong. A Viewing for Family & Friends will be held on Thursday, February 17th 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary s Church. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 18th 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary s Church, 8909 Mary Street, Chilliwack. Burial will be held at St. Mary s Cemetery following the service. Survived by her loving family; brother Kenneth Hermann (Elsie); Exeter, ON; children Paul (Dorothy), Comox, BC; Michale Daniel, Chilliwack, BC, Doreen Bocchini (Fred), Windsor, ON; Eugene, Edmonton, AB; Michael (Rose Bell), Philippines; Bernadette Werrell (Ralph Davis), Chilliwack, BC; daughter-in-law Trish Parent (Ken), Duncan, BC; grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; Robekah will be especially missed by those who she shared her past few years with. Robekah was predeceased by her friend and companion of forty years Michael Dunham, son Ken Parent, grandsons Danny Bocchini, Guy Daniel (Facca), mother Hilda Petrie, father William Hermann, siblings Hilda Nash, Grace Jones, Myrtle Iredale, Irene Stewart, Joan Howard and Irma Finlay.
