Local pols prepare for election

ne by one, federal riding associations in Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon are gearing up for an imminent election call. On Monday night, local Conservative Party members were at the Coast Hotel choosing between retiring MP Chuck Strahl’s son Mark Strahl and long-time Strahl supporter, Ernie Charlton. ( The decision was made after press time.) Chuck Strahl announced on March 12 that he would not seek re-election when the country next goes to the polls. Because

the threat of an election is imminent, given the tabling of the federal budget this week, the national party wanted to make sure candidates were lined up in all ridings. Just two days later, 32-year-old Mark Strahl announced he would s e e k t h e Co n s e r va t i v e p a r t y nomination for the riding. The next day, Charlton announced he would try for the nomination. On Thursday, the Green Party announced that Jamie Hoskins had been selected as the candi-

date in the riding. Hoskins is a 31-year-old employment counsellor and facilitator, is married and has a three-year-old son. Hoskins said his decision to be the candidate for the party comes as a direct result of working with families facing tough economic times on a daily basis. “ You can only see so many people worr ied about losing their homes and providing for their children before you need to face your fears, answer the moral call, and do something about it,”

Hoskins said in a press release. As for the NDP, Gwen O’Mahony was chosen as the federal candidate for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon in April 2010. O’Mahony ran unsuccessfully in the 2009 provincial election against Barry Penner in Chilliwack-Hope. In the 2008 federal election, Helen Kormendy was the NDP’s candidate and finished second to Strahl with 18 per cent of the votes. Strahl received 62 per cent. As of Monday, the Liberal Party had not yet chosen a candidate for the riding but party insiders tell the Times there is considerable interest and someone will be chosen soon.

Homeless numbers don’t tell the story

he numbers from Wednesday’s homeless count aren’t yet known, but those involved say poverty is still a major problem in Chilliwack. Kim Lloyd, who is the HIV/AidsHepatitis C Prevention co-ordinator with Pacific Community Resources (PCRS) and who organized the homeless count, said volunteers counted more people on the street than in 2008, when around 100 people were tallied. That number, though, represents only the tip of the iceberg, with those who are couch-surfing or employed under-represented, according to Lloyd. In addition to tallying the number of homeless people found, volunteers also use interviews to dig beneath the surface of those who don’t have a steady place to live. Those interviews are used by support services in town to cater pro-

grams to the needs of the homeless. Lloyd said many of the homeless people interviewed are sleeping behind dumpsters, in parks, in bushes and in abandoned buildings. “They’re throughout Chilliwack,” she said. “They’re really all over the place. There’s no tent city.” Asked how the volunteers approach people suspected of being homeless, Lloyd said “extremely diplomatically.” “Just because you’re homeless doesn’t mean you are perhaps carrying a knapsack and have a hole in your jeans. penalizes new centres BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

S

ometimes crude numbers not only don’t tell the whole story, they tell a lie. For Charlotte Hall who runs Kidzone Childcare Centre at Cultus Lake, Fraser Health’s inspection priority ratings for daycares tell a story that is more than incomplete, it is simply unfair. The Vancouver Sun recently accessed and published an online database of the inspection priority ratings at www.vancouversun.com/ daycare. Out of 112 local providers of daycare in that database, 84 were rated “low,” 17 were rated “moderate,” and 11 were rated “high.” The levels are used to decide how to deploy health authority inspectors: daycares with a “low” rating get a single inspection a year, while those rated “moderate” get two and those rated “high” get three or more. The problem for Hall and others is that the “high” rating, which could set off alarm bells for parents, is assigned not only to facilities that have had problems, but also to facilities that are new. “We all start at these high

ratings and we have to bring it down,” Hall told the Times. “What happened to innocent until proven guilty?” Earlier this month, Chilliwack Child Care Resource and Referral director Barb Presseau suggested the ratings could be misleading. “Sometimes the hazard, lets say a high hazard, could be due to something that a parent may not be concerned about,” she said. “[For example] recently been doing renovations and something wasn’t boarded in yet or let’s say the bleach happened to be sitting out on the counter and is usually in a locked cupboard.” For Hall, this is precisely the case. The “high” rating attributed to her facility was assigned just weeks after she opened her doors. On March 4, she received a visit from an inspector and had her rating downgraded to “moderate.” Hall said the four reasons for that moderate rating were: her refrigerator lacked a thermometer; some containers of paint were on a shelf that did not have nonslip mats; the immunization record for one staff member was missing; and when the inspector arrived, a staff member was 10 minutes late

Hall feels it is unfair and misleading that even though she has had no complaints or issues, her facility was given a “high” inspection rating because it is new. and two children under the age of six were mixing with the six children over six. “That’s ridiculous,” parent Jennifer Hicks told the Times of the ratings Hall has received. “There has never even been an incident where I have felt even the least bit uncomfortable.” Hicks has five children aged nine, seven, six, five and three, all of whom attend

Kidzone. “She’s awesome,” Hicks said. “She’s bent over backwards for us from the minute we started using her in September and my kids love her.” Hall said she has never heard a bad thing from another parent and she has frequently recommended Hall’s services. Her advice to parents seeking out daycare?

“As a parent of five kids it’s a lot to do with using your intuitions,” she said. “I would never go by something like a rating I saw in the paper. I would rather go there myself and stay for half an hour and watch how the teacher interacts with the preschool students. “I think that’s a lot more important than what a newspaper says.”

But with British Columbia’s new Premier, Christy Clark, promising to raise the minimum wage to $10.25 by next year, Lloyd hopes that better times are on the way for

Grow a row to feed the hungry BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

“As opposed to two years ago, we have a great many vegetable varieties that will actually perform very, very well and give great results in containers,” said Minter. In Ca n a d a , t h e P l a n t a Row-Grow a Row program produces one million pounds of produce for food banks every year, according to Minter, and in a time of rising food prices, the Chilliwack Salvation Army couldn’t be happier about the prospect of donated, homegrown produce. “The soup kitchen averages around 33,000 clients each year,” said Sally Ann

four Garden Harvest Swaps (for gardeners with surplus vegetables who want to trade with other gardeners who have different surplus vegetables), all growers with an overabundance of mature, in-season produce can come down and share their bounty with the food bank. (Although all donations are welcome, beets, squash, potatoes, onions, carrots and other root vegetables are especially useful because of their long shelf life.) The beauty of the Plant a Row-Grow a Row initiative, according to Clempson, is that it builds community

community ministries director Ian Pratt. “To keep up with these demands, we rely on the community for support, and Chilliwack always rises to the challenge. The Food Matters program is another example of the tremendous support and community-minded spirit within Chilliwack.” O n c e t h e v e g g i e s a re ready, volunteers will wash, weigh and deliver them to the Salvation Army on four scheduled drop-off days throughout the summer. f you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at vegetable gardening, Food Matters Chilliwack is adding a little extra incentive this growing season—feeding the hungry. Next month, the local food advocacy group will host its first annual Plant a RowGrow a Row event, in a bid to get more healthy food onto the tables of Chilliwack’s less fortunate. The national initiative, which has taken root in communities across Canada, encourages seasoned gardeners and greenhorns alike to grow an extra row of produce for their local food banks and soup kitchens. Food Matters is launching the program in Chilliwack April 9 at Gwynne Vaughan Park, and anyone interested in getting their hands dirty to help out the Salvation Army food bank and soup kitchen is encouraged to come out. “It’s something in the community that you can do that’s concrete,” said organizer Alanna Clempson. Local gardening guru and

national Plant a Row-Grow a Row spokesperson Brian Minter will be on hand with a demonstration on how to turn a patch of grass into a thriving garden plot, and the first 100 households to sign up for the program will get a complimentary starter seed kit, including potatoes and an assortment of root vegetables. A shortage of gardening space need not be an obstacle to aspiring vegetable growers either. The first 30 people to sign up who don’t have access to a patch of soil will be presented with a one-foot by two-foot cedar planter, a bag of soil, a packet of squash seeds and a tomato tumbler. The tomatoes will be theirs to keep, and the squash will make a nutritious, storable ingredient for a soup-kitchen meal. Fo o d g a rd e n i n g h a s exploded in the last two years, according to Minter, and 54 per cent of that homegrown produce in Canada and the U.S. is currently grown in containers, so planting seeds on your apartment balcony for the Salvation Army is more feasible than ever.

Living in a very scary world

A

t first I assumed I had accidentally ended up on the satirical The Onion webpage where fictional, bizarre stories are mischievously passed off as factual new items. Unfortunately, such was not the case. It turns out I came across a fully legitimate Associate Press news story titled, “Keep children in booster seats longer—as old as 12—say pediatricians”. They’re serious. The latest recommendations suggest keeping children in booster seats until they’ve reached a height of four foot nine. As I recall, that would cover about 10 per cent of the student body when I was in grade eight. The author of the study reports, “There are certain things I’m willing to negotiate— bedtime, teeth brushing and broccoli for dinner. But safety is nonnegotiable. If parents establish that early in life, they’ll get less pushback over time.” Exactly how humiliating would it be to be strapped into a booster seat like a three-year old toddler, being driven to your first day of junior high school? Sadly, many will accept the advice of the American Academy of Pediatrics and assume that by keeping their kids in a

JOHN MARTIN

Crime Matters bubble, they will be safe and sound. This is the mentality that has encouraged schools and parks to get rid of playground equipment so no one gets hurt falling off a swing or being bounced off a teeter-totter. A few years ago we saw a movement across the land to ban the game of tag because some kids got hurt running into each other. Dodgeball is long gone and even such timeless leisure pursuits as soccer and touch football are being banned at schools because they’re considered too violent. Sure there’s an epidemic of diabetes among children. But hey, at least they don’t have scraped knees. And now we’re supposed to keep 12-year-olds buckled into booster seats. My, my—we’ve sure come a long way from the days of 12-year-olds doing all sorts of jobs on the family farm including driving a tractor.

Maybe this shouldn’t come as a surprise whatsoever. After all, it’s perfectly normal and socially acceptable for 25- and 30-yearold men to live in their mom’s basement. If grown men can live like teenagers, perhaps we shouldn’t be overly concerned about someone approaching adolescence being treated like an infant. I was recently informed of an incident in which a woman contacted university administrators. Her son, 18 years old, was getting ready to start his first semester of university and would be living in residence. The mother explained that he had never been away from home for longer than a weekend. She requested permission to bring a mattress and bunk with him in his room for the first few weeks to make sure he didn’t get too traumatized during the transition. No doubt, on rainy days, she would insist on driving him to his classes. In a government-approved booster seat of course. ◗ John Martin is a criminologist at the University of the Fraser Valley. ven hard-right business organizations whose policy doctrines suggest they would be OK with sub-Saharan wages in B.C. are offering only half-hearted resistance to Premier Christy Clark’s plan to raise the minimum wage. That’s how long overdue this province is for a move towards the standard everywhere else in Canada. Naturally, organizations at the other end of the scale are complaining that the $10.25 minimum is not enough, or that it is being implemented too slowly. Clark’s game plan is to raise the working poor’s bottom line in increments, reaching the full $10.25 per hour on May 1, 2012. Announcements that the minimum wage is being raised from the current $8 per hour miss an important aspect of Clark’s wage hike: the ridiculous $6 minimum “training wage,” often abused by unscrupulous employers to obtain supercheap labour, will be scrapped as of May 1 this year. That decision even earned Clark plaudits from her foes in the Opposition benches, although the New Democrats and others have been quick to point out that the new premier is contemplating allowing a different minimum-belowminimum standard for some who work in the service industry. Clark is considering a plan to mitigate the extra money that alcohol servers earn in gratuities—apparently on the premise that low-level labourers shouldn’t be capitalizing on windfalls that could be raked in by their employers instead. The NDP wanted the minimum raised to $10 four years ago, when Clark’s predecessor and his cohorts maintained it wasn’t necessary, because market forces in those better economic times would drive up the minimum naturally. But the market forces haven’t done their job, and now that past-necessary wage hike will be fielded by small businesses crunched by the HST, the continuing global recession, and in some cases, customer reticence born of changes to drinking-and-driving laws. Future crunches could be avoided by extending the incremental minimum wage hikes past May next year, with further—small and reasonably anticipated— increases tied to inflation.

Report misleading and unfair Editor: In response to the article regarding Valleyhaven’s safety rating, I would like to make the following comments. I have been providing onsite contracted dental services to Valleyhaven for the past 13 years. This means that I am at Valeyhaven many times a month, often during the days, evenings and weekends. As a health care professional with 32 years experience in dental hygiene, and 14 years in residential care, all I can say is the report that was published in the Chilliwack Times is misleading and unfair. I would like to ask if Chad Skelton and Paul Henderson had taken time to investigate all the changes Valleyhaven has been thru in the past three years before writing their articles. Obviously the only thing they considered was a rating they found published by Fraser Health. Nobody has headlined that an outside businessman was willing to invest millions of dollars into a beautiful new care home for our community. This new facility just opened this week. Where were the reporters from the Times, willing to see how every possible luxury and consideration for care has been included. Chilliwack media should be applauding this type of investment in our town by Kaigo Retirement Communities Ltd. The past three years have been very difficult at Valleyhaven as staff, residents and families lived in the middle of a construction zone. Yes, many care routines were upset, but never compromised. I saw nurses struggling to meet the needs of the residents, the demands of the families and the requirements of the health authority during this time. Some might remember that there was a plan to shut Valleyhaven down during construction but of course there were outcries that irreversible harm would come to residents if they were moved. Valleyhaven continued to operate and thank goodness many of the staff stuck it out also. My family and I have lived in Chilliwack for over 50 years, and the slandering of local health care agencies

and those who work in them is downright embarrassing. What a way to present our community to the rest of the province. With my dental service I regularly visit 10 residential care facilities in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Agassiz and Hope. All I see is caregivers trying to do their best under financial constraints, increasingly difficult patient loads, and the constant changes made by Fraser Health licensing agents. Watching this for 14 years has been exhausting for me and I thank our system everyday that there are people willing to spend their careers to work in residential care. I don’t think any of the reporters have ever spent a day following a nurse or a careaid to see what their workload is like. Maybe then they would have more appreciation and less criticism to report. Freedom comes with a price Editor: Regarding the letter to the editor in the Tuesday, March 15 Chilliwack Times “Military veterans should quit complaining.” Yes Don Brewer, you have every right to make your statement and have it published in the local paper. You are entitled to your opinion on any subject you so choose to relate to. I know that there will be many who will be very angry with you, and they also have that right to express themselves in any way they wish. I must remind you that the reason you and all the

others have that right, is because a group of men and women, both military and civilian, went off to war and fought the tyrant and won. A tyrant who was bent on destroying all freedoms and imposing his will on us in many ways that you cannot imagine. Now we have another group of individuals who are bent on destroying our way of life, and some of those are in our country at this very moment. People who are willing to give up their own life for their cause and yes, Don, the men and women have put on the uniform once again to preserve our freedoms so that you and others can express their opinions without fear of being punished for their thoughts and expressions. It’s unfortunate that you cannot understand that we owe them a lot more for their efforts. Yes, when you put on that uniform, you know that it’s not going to be always pleasant; you may even have disabilities that will last for the rest of your life or you may even die before you have lived a full life in the service of your country. Those who serve Canada in the military are appreciated in other countries more than we will ever know for all the good things that they do to make life better for those that do not have the freedoms that most of us take for granted. The men and women in the military, who have served their country, have the right to indicate to the government of our country, that putting your life on the line to preserve our freedon of democracy comes with a price. Hooligans out tossing eggs Editor: I write this to the hooligans who were driving around the Knight Street area of Chilliwack on the evening of Sunday, March 6, who thought it would be fun to have a night of eggthrowing at the expense of innocent bystanders. My son was taking a walk in this area when you decided he was to be the recipient of your egg pelting. His only winter coat was covered with the egg residue and we have since had to take it to be drycleaned. At this point, the dry cleaner is not optimistic he can clean it. So, not only have your actions left my son without a coat, but he is left with the prospect that the coat may be ruined, plus he will be out for the cost of dry cleaning! Shame on you! Heather E. Macdonald Chilliwack

Grad gambling a bad idea Editor: I am writing you as a concerned mother. When I first heard about dry grads, they seemed like good idea, but I am somewhat concerned about the event planned for our 2011 graduates. It seems terribly inappropriate to me that they would have a casino at this event (even if the kids are gambling with play money). Gambling creates nothing but problems in our society; is this really the best we could come up with? I contacted School District No. 33 Feb. 24 voicing my concerns, but to date no one has seen fit to get back to me. I am now asking you if this seems like an appropriate activity for teens, and am wondering if I am the only parent that is unhappy about this? Nicolette Avery-Weitzel Chilliwack

he Chilliwack Bruins will face the Spokane Chiefs in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs after splitting a pair of games this weekend. The Bruins fell 6-1 to the Tri-City Americans Friday before shutting out the Everett Silvertips 3-0 Saturday. The two points left the Bruins once again looking up at the Vancouver Giants, who managed to right their ship just in time in order to secure fifth place in the conference and a series against the Americans. The Bruins, meanwhile, finished with 74 points, good for sixth in the conference—the most points and highest final position in franchise history. But it only secures a matchup with the Spokane Chiefs, one of the best junior hockey teams in the country. Nevertheless, any playoff spot is a blessing for a team that, only three weeks ago, was flounder-

scoring. Then, killing a penalty early in the third, Sundher stole the puck from a Silvertips pointman, raced towards goal on a breakaway, then stuffed in his own rebound to extend the lead. He capped the night with an even-strength wrist shot from the slot to send the 3,867 fans home

Playing in what would be his final regular season game of the season, Howse was held off the scoresheet, leaving him with 51 goals on the year, good for second place in the Western Hockey League, two back of the Chiefs’ Tyler Johnson. Bruins captain Brandon Manning, playing a season shortened by injury and suspension, finished with 53 points in 53 games, good for ninth in defenceman scoring.

Playoffs open Friday

The Bruins open the playoffs Friday in Spokane. Games three and four go March 30 and 31 at Prospera Centre. ◗ Check out the Friday edition of the Chilliwack Times for a full playoff preview.

Fed up with Hot Flashes and Night Sweats?

E

very Thursday evening, my friends and I get together for a walk, a light-hearted social event and a friendly chat over a cup of tea. And when we get together, do you know what we talk about? Menopause! We talk about how horrible it is to wake up umpteen times in the middle of the night because of night sweats. We talk about how unbearable our partners and families have become because we are endlessly frustrated and agitated. Agitated about what? Because we are suffering from upand-down mood swings, uncontrollable weight gain and we just can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep. And that’s just the beginning. We call } ^ª~ ~ | k r zª} ª ¨¨ an vacations.” Some of my girlfriends carry a towel to dry themselves off af} } } ^ª~ ~\ c o~ ª ~ ª j ety attacks and other health problems including vaginal dryness, nausea and tons of weight gain. Menopause really sucks.

It seems that as we age, our metabolism changes, generally slowing down, causing the body to function at a much slower rate. Less estrogen ~ ¡|¢ ¡ ¢ª|~ ^|¢}|ª} ~\ c ~ ª ^|¢}|ª} ~ are thought to be the cause of many of the adverse symptoms.

And as if that wasn’t enough, about eight years ago, a major clinical study on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) was abruptly stopped after results showed the overall risks of HRT ª |}k ¡ } ¨ _}~ c ~ cluded an increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and blood clots. Thanks, but no thanks.

So what’s a 50-something woman supposed to do? That’s one of the many things we talk about on Thursday nights and, what we have discovered is that there are some very effective natural remedies for the symptoms of menopause. Like MenoSense. MenoSense is a natural formula with ª¢ ~ ] ¡ ª z ª|~ ~i } ~\ ¡ ª~} berry, to help restore your estrogen/progesterone balance plus Dong Quai, to help relieve the symptoms of ª|~ ] ~ ¢ ª i } ^ª~ ~\ If you want help to relieve the symptoms of menopause, visit Sardis Health Foods and ask about MenoSense. hilliwack’s Doug Marshall put an exclamation mark on a dominant B.C. Mixed Curling Championship performance by making a triple takeout in the eighth end to score five points and secure the provincial crown Saturday. Along with third Lisa Deputan, second Darren Jarvis, and lead Janet Klebe, Marshall rolled through the round robin portion of the tournament, finishing with a 5-1 record, good enough for first place and a bye to the final. Facing Wes Craig’s Duncan rink in the final game, Marshall jumped out to a 40 lead, traded deuces in the fifth and sixth ends, then sealed the victory with the five-pointer in the eighth. Tub to go Forget about roughing it.

Consider bringing along a hot tub the next time you’re in the great outdoors, says Metro Vancouver Softub dealer Paul Block. His product isn’t inflatable; instead, he says, it’s 32 layers of heat bonded industrial foam covered in marine grade vinyl. He believes it’s better than a standard acrylic tub because it’s portable, more energy efficient, and doesn’t require a foundation to be built. It also uses standard 110V power, rather than needing installation of a 220V outlet. The Softub weighs 55 to 85 pounds, depending on the size purchased. Courtesy of the Vancouver Sun

◗ Outdoor Decor By Cornelia Naylor cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com The sap is running in the trees, crocuses are pushing their way through the soil and gardeners all over the Fraser Valley are itching to put their green thumbs to work. The timing couldn’t be better for the 9th Annual Fraser Valley Yard, Garden and Renovation Show ready to take over Heritage Park this weekend. “Spring has sprung. The clocks have sprung ahead, and people are anxious to get outside and start doing stuff,” said event manager Gary Moran. But timing isn’t the only reason the show, which runs March 25, 26 and 27, has become the premier spring show in the valley, according to Moran. The key is to keep up with what buyers want. “If people are asking for it, then we’re searching for the right vendor for the show,” he said. This year’s event is bigger than ever with 219 booths (about 40 more than last year) and 160 vendors, selling everything from perennials and playsets to garden sheds and gazebos, and organizers expect that variety

to push attendance past the 10,000 mark of last year. New this year are vendors offering outdoor fun beyond the garden gate with ATVs, Sea-Doos & boats. “Once you’re finished mowing the lawn and planting the flowers, well, maybe you want to do something else recreational,” said Moran. Another first at the show are two talks on gardening fitness (Spring Forward into Health and Fit for the Garden) that organizers have added to the show’s schedule of informative, 45-minute seminars. Other talks will include a seminar by UFV horticulturalist Tom Baumann on updating your garden’s berry varieties and a presentation by local gardening celebrity Brian Minter on container gardening. “Container gardening is going to continue to be one of our number-one growth areas,” said Moran, “because landscapes are shrinking, so people are needing to tier their gardens.” Vegetable growing is also making a comeback, he said, as more people discover the feasibility of continued on next page

“There’s something for everybody,” said Moran, “whether you’re looking to do a complete renovation of your yard or just looking for the knick knacks.” And while grownups are busy hunting for just the right item or idea to turn their yards into the perfect stay-cation destination, kids can drop by the Family Fun Zone and hang out with Ronald McDonald and friends, watch the Greater Vancouver Zoo’s birds of prey in action or plant a free herb or flower to take home. “It’s become huge,” said Moran of the kids planting area, now in its third year. “In year one we did about a hundred plants. Last year we did over 400 plants.”

Banford

growing their own humble but tasty crops in small raised beds and even containers. Another trend that doesn’t show any signs of slowing down are backyard renovations that bring the indoors outside—like outdoor kitchens that feature everything including the kitchen sink. To make sure this year’s eager renovators get all the help they need, the Fraser Valley Yard, Garden and Renovation Show has expanded Renovation Row, a place where homeowners can discuss their renovation ideas with pros like planners and contractors. The idea was a big hit when it was introduced last year, and Moran said homeowners at the tail end of tough economic time are still eager to find ways to fix up their homes and yards instead of buying new. The same goes for people choosing to spend more time in their backyards instead of going on expensive vacations. “We’re still cocooning a little bit,” said Moran. But that doesn’t mean the Fraser Valley Yard, Garden and Renovation Show is only about big renovation projects.

It’s Time to Re-think your Heating and Cooling By Simon Blake It’s Cold Up There!

A

- advertising feature

ir-to-air heat pumps have traditionally been viewed as a technology for warmer climates. When the temperature dips, so does the heating output. In cities like Winnipeg with a design temperature of -35ºC or even in southern Ontario with a design temperature of -19ºC, the traditional air-to-air heat pump must rely heavily on a backup-heating source. However, new technologies and tighter homes are changing that. Mitsubishi Electric of Markham, Ont. recently introduced its Zuba-Central heat pump to the Canadian market.

In the heating mode, this unit generates 40,000 BTU/h at -15ºC and 32,000 BTU/h at -25ºC. Many of these units are already providing heating and cooling across Canada and as far North as Whitehorse, Yukon.

It’s expensive to heat a home in Whitehorse, Yukon. Heating contractors design for -24ºC. Oil and propane must be trucked in. Residents pay 99 cents a litre for heating oil and can burn 1,000 litres a month in the middle of winter. Electricity is expensive; natural gas doesn’t exist.

Residents are always looking for less expensive heating options. Midnight Sun Sheet Metal and Heating installed its first Zuba heat pump last winter, reports lead hand Jeff Hotte. “It was quite impressive when we first fired it up. Within 15 minutes we had 105ºF air blowing out of it at -25ºC.” In this case the homeowner is using a propane boiler as backup. However, his propane costs have been reduced substantially because the modern 2,500 sq. ft. home has heat loss of only 42,000 BTU/h. Imagine the efficiency when installed here in Chilliwack.

Made exclusively for Canada by Mitsubishi, Zuba Central is an easy-to-install, money- and space-saving system will forever change the way you experience heating and air conditioning. Explore all of the benefits below and you’ll soon see how. • Powerful Savings: With Zuba-Central, you get what you pay for and more. Zuba-Central is able to not only convert 100% of all electrical energy into heat, but it also absorbs outdoor heat energy – energy that is essentially free. The higher the outdoor temperatures rise, the more efficient the system becomes. Zuba-Central is simply a better and much more efficient way to heat and cool your home all year round. • Tiny Footprint, Massive Improvement – Slimmer than a backyard tile. The Zuba-Central outdoor unit measures only 13″ (33 cm) thick – which sits perfectly alongside your exterior wall and takes up a lot less real estate than a traditional A/C system. • Super Quiet: You may not even realize your Zuba-Central system is hard at work keeping temperatures steady and bringing you home comfort. Our advanced technology ensures super-quiet units that work vibration-free.

Check it out in detail, how it works and what makes it different than all the other heat pumps at the Zuba Central website at Mitsubishi. Available exclusively from Chill-Air.

• Efficiently Green: Now you can keep more money in your pocket while reducing your carbon footprint. The Zuba-Central system uses ozone-friendly R-410A refrigerant which produces no CFCs or HCFCs, and has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). And through the use of VSCI Technology (Variable Compressor Speed Inverter) the Zuba-Central system is able to dynamically adjust heating and cooling capacities to match actual requirements of your home, which means you pay only for the required energy when you need it.

Plotting a sustainable future for Cultus

Three million annual visitors impact loved local lake

Cultus Lake stakeholders are looking at ways to lessen the ill effects from so much traffic on the lake’s ecosystem.

The students’ drawings were submitted to judges in Montreal and 25 finalists were then selected to present their designs on a runway during Montreal Fashion Week. The students faced tough competition from116 design sketches submitted by 21 Canadian fashion design schools.

Creating magic with six metres of fabric The challenge was to create an original design for a high-end retail company with a maximum of six metres of fabric supplied by Télio. The garment was to match this year’s theme, the “Great Canadian North.” The finalists had the opportunity to win one of five scholarships totaling $10,000. As one of the top five finishers, Breiten-

There are specific guidelines and a tight time frame that students must follow, so time management is key. And this is the reality of the fashion design business.”

“Being in Montreal for Fashion Week was an amazing, yet surreal experience,” Breitenmoser said. Although still unsure exactly where she’ll end up in the fashion industry, Breitenmoser is leaning toward the marketing sector. She is now focused on completing her collection for UFV’s Absolute Style fashion show, which takes place Thursday, April 28, at UFV’s Abbotsford campus. ◗ For ticket information contact Corinne at 604-864-4669 or corinne.richardson@ufv.ca.

ultus Lake is treasured by local residents and is tremendously popular with visitors from across the region, the province and beyond. But the lake itself is suffering ill effects from that popularity and some residents think a new strategy is needed to keep the lake healthy. Members of the Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewardship Strategy (CLASS) and of Soowahlie First Nation recently met at the Yakweakwioose longhouse to share information on the social, economic and environmental importance of Cultus Lake and to discuss current issues of concern. Cultus Lake has supported First Nations for generations and today remains a Fraser Valley jewel where people of many cultures live, work and play. At the same time, there are concerns that nutrient-loading, recreation, development, resource extraction and other human impacts (from more than three million visitors a year) are taking their toll on the lake’s ecosystem.

lake is moving towards eutrophication (nutrient enrichment) that is changing fish habitat and water quality. Good water quality is important for ecosystem sustainability, human well-being, property values and the local economy. “Our willingness to care for Cultus Lake will shape its future,” said Marion Robinson of the Fraser Basin Council, secretariat for CLASS. “Good water quality is important to a healthy ecosystem, and it’s important for human health, for property values and for the economy of the region. If we all work together, there is an opportunity to turn things around.” “The future of the lake and the life it supports is dependent upon the surrounding communities and decision-makers coming together to support solutions that foremost care for Cultus Lake and the lives dependent on the Lake,” said Soowahlie Chief Otis Jasper. The Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewards expect to pursue other community dialogues in 2011 and are partnering with scientists from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Simon Fraser University on a project called “The scoop on poop: estimating the nutrient mass balance in Cultus Lake,” to gain a better understanding of the current nutrient load on the lake.
