John Green of Harrison Hot Springs has been gathering evidence, including footprint casts, of the sasquatch for more than 50 years. BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

T

he sasquatch is shrouded in myth and mystery yet few topics of popular culture or scientific consideration induce such feelings of certainty among those who believe the creature exists and comical incredulity among those who don’t. However, there does exist a middle ground trod upon by some who indeed think the sasquatch is likely real but for whom its existence is an open question based on evidence from all over North America. Harrison Hot Springs resident John Green falls into this category and has become a legend in the field of sasquatch—or bigfoot—research since he began his quest to find the elusive biped more than 50 years ago. This past weekend some of the more prominent people in the field of sasquatch research convened in Harrison Hot Springs for a conference that also served as a tribute to Green

Seeking sasquatch

Local bigfoot hunter John Green honoured for his 50-year quest to find elusive biped and his dedication to the topic. The Sasquatch Summit took place at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa with lectures and displays including footprint casts, possible hair samples and images from the famous Patterson-Gimlin film. The weekend culminated with a tribute banquet to Green and was attended by leading members in the field of sasquatch research from all over North America and beyond. In the shadows But is there really a species of large,

bipedal, ape-like creature roaming the woods around Chilliwack, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and the rest of North America? Green thinks so but he hasn’t come to that conclusion easily or without extensive research and consideration into the matter. When confronted with the most obvious fact skeptics have for sasquatch searchers—why has no one come across a single bone of a dead creature?—the retired journalist doesn’t shy away from the legitimacy of the question.

“That’s very good evidence that there couldn’t be any such creature,” Green told the Times during a recent interview in his home. But he added there are two conflicting lines of reasoning “There couldn’t be a creature like this without a dead one having surfaced. The alternative is that somehow humans are faking all the evidence but after 50 years now for me, they can’t do it.” And for Green, those who reject the existence of bigfoot or sasquatch See BIGFOOT, Page 4

out of hand, as most people do, need themselves to be more scientific about the topic. “In this field things are upside down and backwards,” he said. “The people who investigate are called ‘believers’ and the people who believe there can’t be any such thing and therefore don’t investigate are called ‘scientists.’” Idaho State University anthropologist Jeffrey Meldrum is one such scientist—a zoology expert in bipedal locomotion—who has taken an interest in finding out of the sasquatch could exist. Meldrum has been confronted with the attacks and dismissals from colleagues who know about his interest in the topic. “As with most human communities, they run the entire gambit from enthusiastic interest to absolute visceral and irrational rejection,” Meldrum told the Times during a recent telephone interview. “I’m sometimes amazed at the vitriol with which some people take exception to my pursuit of this.”

A monster centennial Green’s interest in the sasquatch began when was a stringer for the Vancouver Sun in 1957. The government was preparing to celebrate the province’s 100th anniversary in 1958 and was offering matching funds to each municipality to do permanent projects marking the centennial. A member of the Village of Harrison Hot Springs council suggested spending the few hundred dollars hunting for the sasquatch. Green did a story on the hunt for the Sun and the story exploded. “I understand it now—I certainly didn’t then—any kind of an official organization taking an interest in a monster suddenly becomes a story, a huge story,” he said.

Old barbershop burns Squatters may be to blame for blaze

fire that tied up traffic along Vedder Road Friday morning and damaged a vacant home may have been caused by squatters, according to city fire officials. The blaze erupted around rush hour Friday in a house that used to be a barbershop, near the intersection of Watson, Vedder and Promontory roads. The flames were quickly snuffed out by

firefighters, but traffic remained snarled far longer than the fire burned. Assistant fire chief Ian Josephson said traffic concerns are often aggravated by the public’s interest in seeing a fire first hand. “We would just prefer that everybody stays away or keeps their distance,” said Josephson. “I know people are attracted to the smoke, but it’s very busy and it can become dangerous when people become impatient and they want to get to where they want to go but they can’t because we have hoses across the road. “It’s a safety issue for us. We certainly don’t want to tie up the road any longer than we have to but first and foremost we have a fire that we need to fight.”

Rock slide closes Highway

Nobody was injured in the rock slide, but it did close the highway to traffic throughout the day. A single lane was reopened to traffic overnight, with the second lane slated to be opened sometime Monday.

2010 FORD ESCAPE

Candidates reaching out BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

BLOWOUT!

Cornelia Naylor/TIMES

A volunteer with NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony’s campaign puts up an election sign last week. she spent Saturday knocking on doors in Harrison Hot Springs and Agassiz and reported that many took Liberal signs to put up. “Lots of folks at the door say it’s time for a change!” she tweeted Saturday afternoon. O’Mahony officially opened her downtown, Yale Road election office on Sunday and spent Friday in Hope and the surrounding area. Green Party candidate Jamie Hoskins has barely been seen or heard from

yet on the campaign, except online. His web presence far outweighs that of the other candidates but he was unable to attend the Rotary Club’s all candidates meeting last week and Green Party lawn signs are few and far between. ◗ A week from today, on April 19, the candidates will be at UFV in Chilliwack for an allcandidates meeting followed by another debate hosted by the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce on April 21 at the Coast Hotel at 12:30 p.m.

y the end of the day Tuesday, the three main federal election candidates will all have toured the farthest reaches of the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding. Even before the election was called, NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony said she had spent a fair amount of time in the upper reaches of the riding knocking on doors getting to know the constituency. Liberal candidate Diane Janzen toured up the Fraser Canyon to Pemberton last week. And Conservative candidate Mark Strahl said Thursday he spent 16 hours on a tour of Hope, Lytton, Lillooet, Cache Creek and Ashcroft. On Tuesday, he was off to Pemberton to wrap up his initial riding tour. “Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon is 29,999 square kilometers, and it takes a few days to get to every corner of it,” said Strahl in a press release issued Monday. “But it’s important to reach out and connect with the people wherever they live, face to face.” Janzen said on Twitter that

egetable gardening enthusiasts gathered at Gwynne Vaughan Park Saturday to get tips from gardening expert Brian Minter, who was there to help launch the first Plant A Row–Grow A Row event hosted by Food Matters Chilliwack. The local food advocacy group hosted the event in a bid to get more healthy food onto the tables of Chilliwack’s less fortunate. The national initiative, which has taken root in communities across Canada, encourages seasoned gardeners and greenhorns alike to grow an extra row of produce for their local food banks and soup kitchens. “It’s something in the community that you can do that’s concrete,” said organizer Alanna Clempson. Minter, a local gardening guru and national Plant a Row-Grow a Row spokesperson, was on hand with a demonstration on how to turn a patch of grass into a thriving garden plot. The first 100 households to sign up for the program received

Master gardener Brian Minter talks about vegetable gardening Saturday. a complimentary starter seed kit, including potatoes and an assortment of root vegetables. In Canada, the Plant a Row-Grow a Row program produces one million pounds of produce for food banks every year, according to Minter, and in a time of rising food prices, the Chilliwack Salvation Army couldn’t be happier about the prospect of homegrown produce. “The soup kitchen averages around 33,000 clients each year,” said Sally Ann community ministries director Ian Pratt. “To keep up with these demands, we rely

on the community for support, and Chilliwack always rises to the challenge. The Food Matters program is another example of the tremendous support and community-minded spirit within Chilliwack.” Once the veggies are ready, volunteers will wash, weigh and deliver them to the Salvation Army on four scheduled dropoff days throughout the summer. ◗ For more information on Food Matters Chilliwack, visit them on Facebook. have been told their time with the club is coming to an end. With the Bruins leaving, the focus has turned to what may replace them in Prospera Centre next year. Ringdal told the Times that “there is a possibility that another team in the league may wish to relocate to Chilliwack and the only one that I’m aware of is Prince George that has some interest. “That was reported long ago,” he continued. “That’s no news from me, but whether or not that can happen, there’s no deal in place . . . but we’re prepared to talk and see if that’s a possibility and in the end, that would probably be good for everybody.” Ringdal said the Western Hockey League isn’t interested in expansion. But he said that “if there is any movement in the league, they would be involved in that and they would be helpful, as they were in the movement from Chilliwack to Victoria. They worked with the group there.” If a Western Hockey League team can’t be brought to Chilliwack, Ringdal, Keith

and Bond would turn their attention to securing either a British Columbia Hockey League team or, possibly, an East Coast Hockey League team. The latter option hasn’t been fully explored, but Ringdal said “we have spoken to the [BCHL] and I think we would be welcomed into the league.” Ringdal said the group has two weeks to make a decision on who will be playing hockey out of Prospera Centre. The league, meanwhile, remains mum on the move of the Bruins. Kamloops Daily News sports editor Gregg Drinnan has also reported the team is set to change hands on April 17 and that soon thereafter moving trucks will arrive to move the club’s assets. The Bruins would likely displace the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings from the SaveOn Foods Centre, and there is speculation that the WHL is waiting for the Salmon Kings’ season to end before making an announcement.

No recouping emotional loss

A

s the Chilliwack Bruins are spirited out of town, let’s be clear: just because the franchise is a business does not mean that the owners had the right—at least morally—to do what they want with their franchise without explanation. How the sale and relocation of the team was handled was morally and ethically wrong. Period. The Bruins, of course, are a business. But a sports team is different from, say, a barber shop or grocery store. Sports teams are not in the business of selling tickets—that’s just the business model they choose to use. Rather, sports teams are more like good-times brokers, in which they take money in exchange for a promise of an emotional payoff. Sometimes that payoff comes in the form of an exciting game or a big victory. But more often, the emotional repayment takes place over a longer time frame. Through it all, there is an unspoken, but very real, covenant between a club and its supporters: the fans will spend their money on tickets and merchandise, and the franchise will do its best to make them feel good, at some point. Consider, for example, how much you would pay to attend a game between two random sports teams to which you feel no connection. Then consider how much

TYLER OLSEN

Win,Lose orTy the same calibre but for whom you have cheered for years. The difference there is the value of an emotional connection with a team. Or look at the Bruins marketing campaign from last year. They told fans “We want you, to rise with us.” They didn’t say, “Give us money for exciting hockey.” They said, “Give us money and we’ll make you feel good.” Fans know they may not get those good feelings right away. It might take five years, 10 years or 40 years. Indeed, they might never be repaid. But the owners of the franchise will do their best. And the team doesn’t have to win for a fan to get an emotional kick out of supporting a club—just look at the Vancouver Canucks for evidence of that. And yes, sometimes franchises have to move for financial reasons. But before it happens, the owners of the club have the obligation to warn fans and explain how they may stop their emotional investment from vanishing. Such has happened with the Kootenay Ice.

money invested by the owners and by fans still waiting for their emotional payoff. This year, however, the owners of the Chilliwack Bruins took money from fans saying, “We will help you become good. You will make us feel good—maybe not this year, but sometime down the road.” The owners, however, didn’t keep their side of the bargain. They had an option to sell the club to Moray Keith and both reap a financial profit and preserve the investment of fans. Instead, they turned that option aside, and they did so with the full knowledge that they would break the hearts of their fans. Worse, even as they continued to accept money from fans, they maintained that only they had a right to know about the future of the franchise. In this, they were supported by the Western Hockey League which, by threatening everybody over whom it had power with gag orders, also declared moral bankruptcy. The league and the owners say they will speak when the time is right. But when that time comes, they should know that the “it’s business” defence doesn’t fly any more. Chilliwack may get another WHL franchise, but this city’s hockey fans will never recoup the time, money and emotion they spent on the team

evelation of Mandeep Bhuller’s 2005 drinking and driving conviction on charges stemming from 2003 charges raises a host of issues germane to the current federal election campaign. The obvious connection to the general election on May 2 is, of course, that Bhuller is the federal Liberal Party’s candidate in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding. Before we even explore how voters might respond to this week’s news that Bhuller was fined $800 and prohibited from driving for a year six years ago, there are some basic philosophical questions to address. For instance, it’s clear that the Liberal Party of Canada has accepted Bhuller’s indiscretion: “There was openness and contrition,” said Liberal party spokesman Brad Zubyk; “There is no way this is a bad man.” Forgiveness is divine, after all. Most British Columbians, it seemed, were willing to quite quickly forgive then-Premier Gordon Campbell for his 2003 drinking and driving arrest which became an international incident. On the other hand, Campbell apologized publicly immediately and admitted his guilt, not contesting the charge in court. And Campbell, as a provincial politician, never had a direct hand in the maintenance of the federal Criminal Code— something that Bhuller would have, if he were elected MP. We have no doubt that Bhuller is a decent fellow who has worked to make up for his mistake through exemplary community service. But the optics of the thing remains. Drinking and driving is not just a criminal offence, it is downright dangerous. And whether or not Bhuller and the Liberal Party of Canada realize how serious the offence is, the reality is that there are still too many Canadians who do not regard drinking and driving laws with the seriousness they deserve. When someone in, or seeking, public office—especially and office with as high a profile as Member of Parliament—it does not help to bring home to everyone how critical—indeed, how deadly—an error it can be to have a few drinks before getting into the driver’s seat of a vehicle.

◗ Your view This week’s question Do you believe the Vancouver Canucks can go all the way and win the Stanley Cup this year?

Tongo and Bongo thankful for the experience Editor: It has been pleasure, honour and a lot of laughs being at the games during the 2010/2011 Chilliwack Bruins games. We waved our rubber chickens, cry towels, bananas and so much more. We got to hear one coach threaten his players about watching us instead of the game. We had the pleasure of hearing an assistance coach demand security remove our chickens. We also observed one team enter the building giving us one finger salutes. These are only a small sample of things connected directly with the visiting teams We shook hands, held babies, signed dozens of autographs and lost count of the number of hugs, photos and awesome experiences we had. Should you leave, we want to thank you for this experience. Tongo & Bongo Your Chilliwack Apes

Les could use an HST reality cheque Editor: I think John Les is far from reality as it effects the common person in B.C. He is also way out to lunch when it concerns the business community. He is living in his “ivory-tower world” with more than adequate income and does not give a hoot about the real circumstances. 1) Business people do have to come up with HST funds first, before they can get it back. They also have to proof that they indeed are entitled to get it back. This all involves not only work, but the physical ability to do without the money they are claiming until the government is satisfied themselves of the legitimacy of the claim, which takes time. This money is therefore not available to the business for the day-to-day running of it. Not to mention that the government needs money for this ‘in-out’ processing, which comes from, you guessed it, us, the consumer/pensioner/little guy taxpayer, etc., who does not get it back. I looked at my records from 2009, when GST and PST were separate and I got a quarterly “GST rebate cheque” of a little over $112 quarterly. Along comes Harper and lowers the taxable income for seniors from 36K to 20K and takes this thusly “generated money” and gives it to Campbell to bribe him into the HST agreement. In 2010 my “rebate cheque” took a hit and I got $96 quarterly, until the HST

was adopted. Mixed into all this was a “revenue neutral carbon tax rebate.” Now with HST in place, with my income taxed after 20K, my rebate cheque is $31 quarterly. It is telling that Les addressed not the “little people” but the Rotarians, who represent the business people. I hope they really look into all this, because this is a lousy shell game and we are being bled dry! And we are suppose to support what these guys did to us. Harald Tilgner Ryder Lake

Kelowna, or Kamloops. The WHL should realize the growth of the valley and all the money and fans they will lose by this move. It seems all the owners think about is the quick money, rather than thinking of the long term good of the WHL and CHL. This is not the time for the board of governors of the league to be making quick decisions. Other leagues are a knocking. Richard Erasmus Chilliwack

Voting for best No time for WHL to candidate, not party make bad decision Editor. I have voted in every election—

Editor: Question: If the Prince George Cougars are maybe coming to Chilliwack why not let them go to Victoria where the Cougars have a history with the city. Why you ask? Because the WHL owners do not want to let go of the B.C. north. If any other city moves to Chilliwack, the WHL realizes that that other city might go to the ECHL or AHL and they would lose market share away from the WHL. Chilliwack, with its close proximity to Abbotsford and the AHL, means Chilliwack will never get a AHL team. And do you really think we in the Valley want a (ECHL) East Coast Hockey League team? We live on the west coast. That would kind of be like watching AAA baseball and now having an A ball team. No thanks, I like junior hockey. I really wonder if the WHL and the CHL are concerned about the Bruins fans in the Fraser Valley. Now you want me to drive all the way to Vancouver to watch junior hockey? Drive through Abbotsford, maybe watch a AHL Abbottsford Heat game. Maybe through Langley and watch a BCHL Chiefs. Or maybe they want us to drive all the way to

federal, provincial, and municipal—since the 1940s. I have never voted for any particular political party. I always look at the candidates, and decide who I think will best serve for our needs, who will they think of first, their constituents or needs of their party, if they are elected. In this federal election, only one person stands out—having political experience and having a good knowledge of local wants and needs. That person is our ex-councillor, Diane Janzen, regardless of what party she is in the running with. Bruce Davis Chilliwack

Saw Bruins move coming long ago Editor: The move out of town by the Bruins comes as no surprise to me. I suspected something was up back when former GM Darrell May was let go. His team-building and scouting skills are evident by his record of finding amazing young talent. You don’t get rid of someone like that if you plan on staying around for the long haul.

The major stockholders in the team don’t even live here and have no emotional stake in Chilliwack. I suspect we were always an easy mark or a stepping stone—ask any puckbunny how that feels. Skilled hockey players grow up being told they’re great and can do no wrong. Complete strangers tell them they’re heroes. Too many times these kids grow into “adults” and believe that whatever they want to do can’t be bad. Major kudos to Moray Keith for taking the high road (a little lonely). The other owners and the WHL have demonstrated themselves for what they stand for—themselves . . . communities be damned. I hope that Mr. Keith can wrangle some other team back in there. I’ve really missed watching a good hockey game. Wendy Power Chilliwack

Thanks for work on Rotary Trail Editor: I am a student at Sardis secondary school. I would like to take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate the improvements that were made on the west end of the Rotary Trail by the Blue Heron Reserve. The trail used to be only accessible weeks after a heavy rainfall. The trail was muddy, uneven, and rain made the conditions of this beautiful area very poor for everyone using the trail. Now, bikers, walkers, joggers, and horseback riders can enjoy the trail all year long. The trial is now levelled out and replaced with crusher dust that, after continuous use, becomes more compact and stays smooth. I am an active person and I do not mind getting out in Chilliwack’s continuous rain. Thank you to the people who made the improvements on the trail and for the money that was spent to allow people like me to enjoy this trail and not be fearful of slipping and falling. three straight league championships. Joe invests countless hours of his time planning practices and plays, as well as waking up early to drive to away games as far as Vancouver. He is a dedicated coach, who comes to practices and games rain or shine. Joe has a reputation for giving good advice to players in order to improve their skill level and confidence. He motivates them in a positive way. O’Mahony went through process Editor: Mr. Mark Strahl is quoted at the recent Rotary Club All-Candidates Forum, as saying that he is the only candidate who went through a nomination process. As president of the Chilliwack Fraser Canyon NDP, let me assure Mr. Strahl, and your readers, that Gwen O’Mahony went through the complete NDP party-required nomination process, which includes the establishment of a search committee that contacts all members as well as identified supporters from outside of the party membership, for their interest. The process also includes a lengthy period for candidates to come forward and file their nomination papers. Al Ens President CFC NDP

Americans feel our pain BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com

ast year, the Chilliwack Bruins and the Tri-City Americans battled for six hard-fought games in what was the Bruins’ best chance to win a playoff series during the franchise’s five-year stay in the Fraser Valley. It was a spirited series punctuated by Americans’ fans’ vehement dislike for the Bruins’ owners who, five years prior, had attempted to move their team to Chilliwack. Now, 12 months later, as the Bruins look to be on their way out of town, some of the strongest calls for Chilliwack to retain its WHL franchise are coming from the club’s erstwhile playoff opponents. Janelle Klages, a Tri-City Americans ticketholder for seven years, says she feels the pain of Bruins fans. Klages and many other Americans

Tri-City hockey fans know what it’s like to live in limbo and their hatred of Darryl Porter is palpable

fans still harbour a palpable hatred for Bruins outgoing president and minority owner Darryl Porter, who was the public face of the Tri-City ownership group that attempted to move the franchise in 2005 after three years of ownership. “Until Porter left, the Americans had sub-par attendance and zero banners hanging from the rafters,” said Klages in an email to the Times. “It took local owners two short years to turn our mediocre hockey team into a consistent contender. “Just five short years ago Porter believed in your community but now that things are challenging he is ready to cut ties and run, just as he did in Tri-Cities.” Dawn Johnson, another Ameri-

cans fan, said fans felt betrayed when Porter tried to move the team to Chilliwack. And both she and Klages want to see their team return to Chilliwack next year to face a Bruins squad. “When we visited the Chilliwack barn last year, we were impressed with the venue and the friendliness of the fans,” said Johnson. “It was a great experience. . . . I believe Chilliwack has shown that they deserve a WHL team with their community support.” But Bruins fans will likely not be as fortunate as their Tri-City sympathizers. Six years ago, the Western Hockey League board of governors rejected Porter’s application to move the

club to Chilliwack. While a majority of governors voted to permit the move, Porter’s group didn’t get the three-quarters of owners needed to approve the relocation. After the vote, league commissioner Ron Robison worked with the city and local investors to come up with a plan to keep the team in Washington, despite the fact that the club would have been worth more if located elsewhere. This time, however, the league’s board of governors voted to permit the franchise to move to Victoria and the league has actively facilitated the move of the Bruins, according to Glen Ringdal, a consultant working with spurned Bruins minority owners Moray Keith and Jim Bond.

This past weekend, the Pacific Allstars competed at the Sea to Sky International Cheerleading Championships in Vancouver at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Center. Coach Peter Parrotta is unbelievably proud of how well all three teams did. The Minis finished fourth in the Small Mini Level 1 category. The Youth team placed fourth in the Small Youth Level 2 Category, and the Senior team fought through injuries, and displayed true determination and championship spirit to finish fourth, in what Coach Pete describes as the hardest division at the competition. All three teams now look forward to representing Canada at the Spirit Nationals in Knotts Berry Farm April 30 and May 1.

News BIGFOOT, from page 4 about the Harrison sasquatch?’” he said. It was in the context of this hype that Green and his wife went to California in November of 1958 to look into some supposed sasquatch tracks. He was met with serious skepticism among locals, so much so that he told the Times if it hadn’t been for the attitude in B.C. the year before they would have turned around. But it was at Bluff Creek in northern California that Green found clear tracks on logging roads. Those

Not convinced humans can fake tracks prints, and many others he found and made plaster casts of, have been said to be faked, specifically by a man named Ray Wallace, something Green calls “utter idiocy.” Just a few weeks after visiting Bluff Creek, Green went to see more tracks near a creek in hard sand that were very clear. He said that to test if those tracks could have been faked he tried jumping off a log. He found he had to land on one heel in order to get a small point of his boot in as deep as the tracks he found.

“OK, can humans make them? Deliberately fake them? The plain simple answer is ‘no,’” he said. Not taken seriously For decades since first finding sasquatch tracks and making casts, Green has recorded sightings and gathered more and more evidence from all over North America. Frequently he has garnered media attention, which has always ended in disappointment. News crews from BBC, CNN and Fox

News have come to Harrison Hot Springs to do pieces of Green and the sasquatch over the years, but he said they always end in a comical dismissal of the phenomena. Much to his frustration, the media have always given great credence to Wallace’s claims that he has faked sasquatch tracks all over North America while pooh-poohing claims to the contrary. “It is all utter idiocy and I spent months trying to get any media outlet whatsoever to pay any

media attention to the plain evidence this was all nonsense and I never succeeded in the slightest,” Green said. And while skepticism about the existence of sasquatch may run much deeper than belief, there are serious and legitimate scientists who continue to have open minds, including Jane Goodall and George Schaller. ◗ See the Friday Chilliwack Times for part two of when we take a closer look at the scientific evidence as well as the local First Nations perspective.

This week is National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the 12.5 million Canadian volunteers who annually donate over 2 billion hours (the equivalent of more than one million full-time jobs) of their work to charitable and non-profit organizations. Locally Chilliwack has a diverse population of volunteers, from teenagers to veterans, working gratis

for churches, non-profits, sports and recreation, education, arts and entertainment and more, according to Chilliwack Community Services Volunteer Chilliwack co-ordinator Cari Moore. “The countless hours they put in help our city run smoothly and make it a place we can all be proud of,” she said in a press release. “Chilliwack See VOLUNTEERS, Page 19

hey are the unsung heroes of homeless and abused animal in B.C.—the 4,000 volunteers who help the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) care for nearly 34,000 animals in need every year. There are volunteers on duty 24 hours a day, fostering entire litters of abandoned kittens that are so young and vulnerable that they require bottle-feeding every two hours. There are volunteers who walk dogs every morning and every afternoon.

And there are volunteers who clean kennels, arrange events, solicit donations and offer humane education programming to school children. “Volunteers provide vital expertise in our 37 branches across the province,” says Ivanna Ferris, manager of Chilliwack SPCA Branch. “We couldn’t carry out our mission work without them.” At the BC SPCA’s Chilliwack Branch, which cared for 1625 animals last year, volunteers regularly lend their talents both for, and on behalf of, animals. Volunteers walk dogs, foster kittens, cuddle cats, clean animal habitats, fundraise, organize special events, create promotional materials and perform dozens of other tasks to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C. The BC SPCA salutes its volunteers

during National Volunteer Week April 10 to 16. According to Volunteer Canada, 11.8 million Canadians volunteer to help others, contributing almost two billion volunteer hours per year. Volunteering for the BC SPCA is both exciting and rewarding. For more information on how to get involved, visit spca.bc.ca/volunteer. ◗ The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. It’s mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

From THE CHILLIWACK LIONS CLUB MUSIC & DANCE FESTIVAL Every year during February and March, the Chilliwack Lions Club Music & Dance Festival host participants and their families from all over the lower mainland. This year, well over 5,000 entries took place in the disciplines of piano, voice, strings, bands, organ, choral and many forms of dance. All of these venues required the support of MANY DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS from the community, members of the Chilliwack Lions Club and members from other Lions clubs. The Chilliwack Lions Club is very grateful to our Volunteers and we want to THANK YOU for your time and efforts to ensure that our festival continues to flourish.

they have been personally affected by a cause. Those are reasons Robert Ratcliff understands well. Ratcliff is one of a dozen volunteer drivers with Chilliwack Community Services who give rides to people who need to get to medical and other appointments and have no other way of getting there. “I’ve always been interested in helping other people,” he said, “and I’m not getting any younger myself, so someday maybe I’ll need some help as well.”

Ratcliff started driving for CCS last summer and some weeks has put in as many as 25 to 30 hours. Besides the driving itself, he enjoys lending a sympathetic ear to those headed to stressful medical appointments. “That has been the most rewarding part of the job for me,” he said, “people who have been very nervous about a given appointment and being able to assure them that it’s going to be OK.” Volunteering can help build self-esteem, develop

life-long skills, strengthen community and improve health, according to the Volunteer Canada, and there are plenty different was to get involved locally. ◗ For more information on volunteer opportunities in Chilliwack, call 604-7924267.
