f there was any question about how safe a Conservative riding Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon was, Mark Strahl extinguished that Monday night as he won handily over Liberal Diane Janzen and New Democrat Gwen O’Mahony. Strahl celebrated at the Best Western with campaign volunteers and party faithful who gathered to watch the results as they were announced. Strahl was declared the winner very early in the proceedings and finished with more than 57 per cent of the vote. Across the country, the Conservatives finished with 167 seats up from 143 and the NDP earned 103 up from 36 giving Jack Layton’s party official opposition status for the first time in Canadian history. The Liberals received just 33 seats, down from 77. The Bloc Quebecois was decimated down from 47 to four seats. And Green Party leader Elizabeth May shocked Conservative Gary Lunn by winning her party’s first ever seat in Ottawa with a win in Saanich-Gulf Islands. As for Strahl in Chilliwack, he

celebrated not just his win but the national Tory success. “We are very excited about the Conservative majority government, first of all—a lot of people in this room have worked for a lot of years to get that,” Strahl told theTimes. “Locally we worked hard. We didn’t take anything for granted and it looks like the people have responded to that and I’m happy to go back to Ottawa as their representative.” The unofficial final tally for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon with 235 of 237 polls reporting was 28,007 votes or 57 per cent for Strahl. NDP candidate Gwen O’Mahony shares a laugh with supporters at Bravo Monday night. O’Mahony lost to Tory Mark Strahl but the national party gained official opposition status.

majority but the success of the NDP surge. And he had something positive to say because of what that meant in Quebec. “It’s a good day for Canada when the Bloc Quebecois is reduced to non-party status as far as I’m concerned,” he said. Over at Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon’s Liberal headquarters earlier in the evening, candidate Diane Janzen watched as preliminary numbers rolled in and they didn’t look good for the party. One supporter noted as leader Michael Ignatieff’s own riding’s numbers came in: “He may not even win his own riding.” “Oh no,” said another. NDP campaign members were torn as they celebrated the party’s national success while mourning a local loss and a Conservative majority. “I’m disappointed at a Conservative majority but it’s a bittersweet moment because it means we will be official opposition,” O’Mahony said. For O’Mahony, who campaigned for months before the election was even called, she said she felt good but knew she just couldn’t overcome the Tory sentiment in Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon. “I know we talked to a lot of people along the way but

we just couldn’t get there,” she said. While Strahl walked away victorious, for the first time in decades there was chatter on the street and at allcandidates meetings about whether this Tory might be defeatable. Before the writ even dropped, controversy erupted within the Conservative Party because of an abbreviated nomination process that angered some long-time party members and garnered regional, provincial and national media attention. Then there was Strahl’s invisibility in the campaign: He attended just three allcandidates meetings out of 10. Janzen missed just one and O’Mahony attended all 10. Unlike in recent elections, where Chuck Strahl easily won over mostly unknown Liberals and New Democrats, Mark was much less known than his father. On the other hand, his NDP opponent had been putting out the word for months and his Liberal opponent was well-known for her time as a city councillor and school trustee. As it turned out, none of that mattered and Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon voters expressed their wishes and another Strahl will represent the riding in Ottawa.

Border changes coming Initiated after local seniors ‘held hostage’ in a bus BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

A

n incident at a U.S.-Canada border crossing in which a busload of Chilliwack seniors was left in a coach for nearly two hours with no air circulation leading to the hospitalization of an 85-year-old woman has led to changes, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). On April 14, 52 seniors crossed into Washington State at the Abbotsford-Huntingdon crossing for a day trip to the Silver Reef Casino on the Lummi Reservation. On the way back, some of the seniors felt they were “held hostage” and said they were afraid and intimidated by border officials.

As a result of the incident, CBSA management requested a review of the events from that day. “This review determined that a lack of appropriate management oversight, and poor communication between the officers and the shift superintendent, both resulted in the delayed clearance of the passengers onboard the charter bus,” CBSA spokesperson Faith St. John told the Times via email. The review also identified “an ineffective bus clearance standard operating procedure” at the crossing, which has now been updated. The main change involves passports and documentation, which previously were taken from passengers for review. As of April 15, a CBSA official will not board the bus to collect the passports for review. “Chief Darryl Lavia, chief of operations for the Huntingdon-Abbotsford port of entry, conveys his apologies for the procedural delays incurred by these bus passengers,” St. John said.

he future of public transit in Chilliwack will be up for discussion over the coming days with a number public open houses planned for the region. BC Transit’s provincewide tour with the “Transit Future” bus will make stops in Agassiz on Tuesday and at Chilliwack’s Evergreen Hall on Wednesday. The bus is an interactive and mobile open house being used to gather input on the 25year plan for transit. Much of what is included in the Chilliwack Regional Transit Future plan will likely come out of the Fraser Valley Transit Study (FVTS), released with much anticipation in December. The FVTS was initiated by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in November 2008, and was slated for completion for November 2009. Municipalities expected to have the study by February of 2010, but the provincial government said it was conducting an internal review before releasing the information. The province finally released the study in December, but proponents of the inter-urban rail line from Chilliwack to Surrey were critical of some of the assumptions in the study. Based on economic and demographic projections,thelong-awaitedreportconcluded that light rail on the old inter-urban line would cost “significantly more than the other transit options available.” But Dr. John Buker of the Rail for the Valley group said those doing the calculations weren’t telling the whole story. “By digging a little under the surface, one discovers shockingly that the report is

actually assuming a regional bus service would attract more than triple the number of passengers of an equivalent light rail service,” Buker said in December. MayorSharonGaetzsaidtheFVTSreinforced the need for new funding sources as “the way we are doing things is unsustainable.” Currently,47percentoftransitfundingcomes from the province, 30 per cent comes from fares and the rest from local property taxes. Given the fact that 87 per cent of Chilliwack transit rides stay in Chilliwack, Gaetz said the focus needs to be on improving local transit. “Hourly service is not going to cut it,” she said in December. TheTransitFutureplanfocusesonChilliwack but also includes regional connections to and from Agassiz, Harrison, Hope and the Central Fraser Valley. Chilliwack Transit includes 10 routes and approximately 539,000 annual riders. AgassizHarrison transit carries about 29,000 riders annually. According to Statistics Canada in Chilliwack in 2006, 83 per cent of local residents commute by automobile, nine per cent car pool, six per cent walk or cycle, one per cent use transit and one per cent said “other.” Public open houses featuring the Transit Future bus occurred at Cottonwood Mall on Saturday, in Hope on Monday and are scheduled for May 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Aberdeen Visitor Centre in Agassiz and May 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Evergreen Hall in Chilliwack. ◗Checkoutwww.bctransit.com/transitfuture for more on the transit picture. Dismal criminal justice system

C

learly, the state of health care in this country is going to be the dominant challenge in the years to come. The system is broken, antiquated and ill-prepared to meet the demands of an aging population. Without fundamental change, not tinkering, the system as it stands is unsustainable. But health care is not the only institution in dire need of an overhaul. The criminal justice system, particularly in this province, is similarly unable to function according to expectations and things are only going to get worse. We don’t have enough judges to hear the ever-growing backlog of cases. Nor do we have enough prosecutors to deal with the horrendous list of outstanding charges. It’s so bad that we don’t even have enough sheriffs to secure courtrooms and deliver the accused from custody to the courts. Consequently an obscene number of charges are being delayed or thrown out altogether. The quick solution would seem to be to hire more judges, prosecutors and sheriffs but nothing is being done on this front. Expect to see even more charges stayed as it becomes painfully obvious that the system is unable to provide justice in a timely manner. It gets worse. The provincial corrections system is spinning its

JOHN MARTIN

Crime Matters wheels and requires a total rethinking about its purpose and function. Most offenders who are given time are sentenced to a month or less. A single day in custody is the most common length of sentence handed down. This doesn’t provide enough time to conduct even a preliminary diagnosis let alone engage in treatment. And it’s the same offenders who are being processed over and over again. What do we possibly expect to accomplish with this proverbial system of revolving door justice? It is utterly laughable to think the status quo in any way advances public safety or the treatment of offenders. Law enforcement is similarly under siege. It takes police longer to process even the most basic, straightforward of cases than it did a decade ago. Numerous jurisdictions in B.C. have an unacceptably low ratio of police per population. If citizens were aware just how few officers are actually on duty in a given community on a Friday night they would be horrified. Tinkering with the present sys-

tem is futile. It requires a complete and total overhaul. But rather than the bold sort of wholesale change and rethinking required, those responsible for criminal justice in this province simply plead poverty and insist there’s no need to be concerned given the overall crime rate is in decline. They couldn’t be more wrong. The system is in shambles and failing miserably in each and every one of its mandates. There is a disturbing lack of leadership and accountability on this front that is an absolute disgrace. The system doesn’t need tweaked here and adjusted there. It literally needs bulldozed and knocked to the ground. Instead, we’re responding in a manner akin to duct-taping and painting over a rotten front porch. It’s just a matter of time till the dinosaurs who resist any change to the present failing health care system make their way to the tar pits and a process of modernization and private sector partnership takes place. I’m less optimistic for the failing health of criminal justice. ◗ John Martin is a criminologist at the University of the Fraser Valley. John.Martin@ufv.ca. An open letter to our newest MP, whomever it is. (Hint: Check page 1). Dear Chilliwack’s MP: Congratulations. You’re hired. You’re stepping into some mighty big shoes, but we think you’re up for the job. We had a strong pool of candidates, but we’ve decided to give you a shot to represent Chilliwack in the House of Commons. First, though, there are some things you should know about what your employer expects of you. Hey! Get off that phone! Why are you calling your party leader? Oh, you thought he/she was your boss? Wrong! We’re in charge here, and if you don’t recognize that we can replace you with the snap of the fingers, or at least at the drop of the next writ. Now that we’ve got your attention, here’s what you should know. You’ll be replacing Chuck Strahl. I know you’ve heard of him (you may even be his son). People loved him, and not just Conservatives. He worked with politicians of all stripes, which fostered good will and a long career. You should try and do the same. We don’t want to be the home riding of one of those politicians who stands up in the House of Commons and screams and shouts about how the other parties are evil until he or she is blue in the face. We want someone who can vociferously disagree with his or her political opponents while maintaining the decorum and professionalism we want (and wish we could expect) from our representatives. We would like it if you ended up in cabinet, but if you’re going to sit at the cabinet table and be bullied into taking a position with which you disagree, then you probably shouldn’t be there in the first place. We don’t have a problem with you being ambitious, but the moment you bend your personal ethics or beliefs because it’s not convenient, we’re going to call you on it. And we won’t be happy. We want you to speak up loudly for all Chilliwack residents, even those who didn’t vote for you. Congratulations on your new job. Sincerely, Chilliwack

day? How can you hold those images up knowing what kind of effect they would have on these people? Finally, I feel that the displays you used are very destructive to your own point. You say these children were murdered? That they were lives to be cherished and loved? So what gives you the right to display their mangled bodies in such a thoughtless and insensitive way? I understand that you feel the need to affect change in the world, but your demonstration did not promote positive debate in my household, only tears and disappointment that you couldn’t treat this with more delicacy. Please have a little more respect next time, and maybe think outside the box to find a way that gets people into a positive discussion of values instead. Margaret Johnston Chilliwack

Housing, not more prisons Editor: Our prisons are full of addicts who will someday be

released back into society. In prison there are no drugs; plus there is counselling, food and shelter. The addict problems come into play in the days and weeks following the release of the addict from prison. After prison, the addict has the counselling. But, other than limited Salvation Army beds, there is no affordable shelter outside prison for the addict and when the addict finds themselves homeless, hungry and cold, the root of the addiction rears its soothing head and soon we have a repeat offender or a death. By not providing permanent shelter for the addict, after the addict is released from prison, all the millions of taxpayer dollars spent to professionally treat the addict in prison are wasted. We give illegal people who land on our shores money, housing, food, counselling, medical treatment, and more, yet we give our own Canadian citizens, whose only crime are addictions, nothing. We do not need to spend billions of dollars to build new prisons to house our addicts to prevent crime; what we need to do is build

We’ve got it good in Canada Editor: I enjoy reading our local papers, not only to keep up with local happenings, but also the occasional challenging thoughts expressed by readers to the editor. This seems to have been replaced with tiresome youth complaints to the extent that youth in Egypt (no less) as in Canada have only simple demands—we only want what our parents received. I could write a whole chapter in response, in particular about conditions in the Middle East. Suffice to say, as yet we are blessed to live in Canada which enjoys an excellent standard of living, second to none. Another writer complains about police partiality, even contempt for police conduct. Having visited countries, some not considered Western democracies, I can only shake my head at these comments. But, we still live in a free society and can express our thoughts without fear of reprisal . . . at least for now. Solms Coutinho Chilliwack

Editor: I am writing this letter in regards to the pro-life demonstration at Five Corners today (April 29) around lunch time. This protest featured several images of aborted fetuses (and similar) in an extremely gory and, I felt, unnecessary display. I am not going to bother touching the hot topic behind the images, but I really must say that these photos were done in extremely bad taste. The images presented were exceedingly disturbing and upsetting, and I feel that it could have been handled much better. Think about it this way: If an image would cause a movie to be rated R, what makes it OK to display in public in such a way? I understand the shock value. I understand that you need to pull people out of their complacency and make them seriously think about the issue. However pictures the size of a person displaying a dead child is not something I find even remotely appropriate to use. I am not the kind of person to avoid an issue because it is messy or controversial. I deliberately seek out causes I believe in, and do not shelter myself from the sad or scary images that accurately display these causes. However, the images displayed hurt me very deeply and I spent several minutes of my lunch hour in tears before I returned to work and warned all of my co-workers to avoid that corner. Can you imagine if I was someone that had lost a child? Or someone with young kids in the car? Or a doctor or nurse that faces life and death every single

Chilliwack Attack defender Jordan Lam tries to escape a tackle by a Richmnd United opponent during Saturday’s final of the U18 Coastal Cup. Lam was named MVP of the final game.

U18 Gold wins CoastalCup

T

he U18 Gold Chilliwack Attack won the Coastal Cup Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 3-1 win over Richmond United. The up-tempo match began with pressure by both teams but the Chilliwack side opened the scoring 20 minutes in when striker Zenow Renaerts found Connor MacMillan with a creative free-kick pass. MacMillan beat the keeper and a defender for the 1-0 lead. Richmond replied with a free kick in the second half that eluded Chilliwack keeper Jamie Freeman. But Freeman stonewalled the Richmond forwards the rest of the way and, midway through the half, a perfect ball by Gerrid Crowe set up forward Chris VanDer Werff for the winning strike. With 15 minutes left in the game, winger Jeff Janz took a Renaerts cross and juggled the ball by the Richmond keeper to seal the champi-

onship for Chilliwack. Defender Jordan Lam was named game MVP for his superb game. Defenders Kyle Staiger, Patrick Bowie, Ben Ross, Cameron Longfellow and Landon Wiens, midfielders Branden Klassen, Justin Williams and Andy Choe, forwards Justin Stanton, Cole Ewart and Nolan Hisco, and keeper Thomas Davies rounded out the winning squad. Chilliwack’s tournament play has secured them a berth in the Provincial B-Cup in Penticton this July. That caps a successful year for this new team which was formed ahead of the season by combining players from the 1993/1994 age groups. This latest accomplishment adds to an amazing run which has resulted in the team winning the Coastal Cup, the league’s Conference Cup, the Fraser Valley District Cup and the District League title, with an impressive record of 18 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.

In Memoriam

Obituaries

McKAY, CHESTER Chester McKay ended his long life’s journey at the age of 89 on Wednesday, April 27th 2011. A long time Chilliwack resident, Chester, was born in Vancouver in 1921 and moved to Cheamview in 1937 where the family operated a sawmill. After his marriage to Doreen (nee Muirhead), they moved to Rosedale and Chester continued to operate the sawmill with his nephew, Charlie, until his retirement. Chester was an avid sportsman enjoying fishing, golfing, playing baseball, curling, snow skiing and water skiing, but his family was his first priority. Chester was a devoted husband to Doreen who predeceased him in 2006. To their great sorrow, in 1965 they lost a newborn daughter, Barbara. He was a loving and dedicated father to his two daughters Pam (Rick) Higginson and Heather (David) Allen. Chester was “Poppa K” to five grandchildren Charlie, Susan, Barry, Russell, and Dawn, and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Gordon whose lives were enriched by his love. In his last years, Chester especially enjoyed meeting at the Airport Café for tea and the company of good friends. He will be missed more than words can express. An open house will be held on Saturday, May 7th 2011 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at 6845 Chilliwack River Road, Chilliwack. Online condolences can be left at www.hendersonsfunerals.com Henderson’s Funeral Home 604.792.1344

HOLLIHAN Elizabeth “Nanny” (Clarke) Elizabeth Mary Hollihan was born June 27th, 1910 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She moved to Chilliwack in the 1950s. She passed away peacefully with family at her bedside, on Thursday April 28th, 2011 at 11:10 p.m. at the age of 100 years old. Elizabeth is survived by her grandchildren: Karen (Ian), Betty-Ann (Jim), Randy (Becky), and Ron. Her 10 great-grandchildren: Kim(Jake), Candice (Cam); Brad, Laurie (Tyler), Angela (Steve); Shawn, Jenn (Jeff); Cory (Amanda), Stacie; Jody & 17 great-great grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

Marilynn Gail Henderson

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years James, her daughters Louise at 1 month, Helen at 29 years old, her grandson James at 33 years old, and granddaughter Trudy at 49 years old.

Not a moment of any day goes by where we don’t miss you dearly. Sadly missed by family & friends.

Elizabeth was a very dedicated parishioner of the Catholic faith. Her humour, jokes and love for her family has allowed her to live 100 happy years.

April 29, 1947 – May 4, 2001

The family would like to send a special thanks to Dr. MacIntosh, the staff at Glenwood Care Centre and Elizabeth’s great granddaughter Candice Lamotte who took amazing care of her for the last 7 years of her life. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Chilliwack on Wednesday May 4th, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Tuesday May 3rd, 2011 at Henderson’s Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Online condolences can be left at www.hendersonsfunerals.com Henderson’s Funeral Home 604.792.1344
