Quick thinking saves family from fire Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com
A
n idyllic afternoon of Christmas decorating quickly turned into a nightmare for a Coquitlam family on Tuesday. Cassandra Bourke, 26, was putting the finishing touches on wrapping and holiday decorations with her two sons, ages four and five, when they decided to take a break around 3 p.m. With tissue and boxes strewn about the table, the trio went upstairs so she could use the washroom while her boys played video games. That’s when she heard the smoke alarm go off. “I thought, ‘Oh, I must have left the oven on.’ So I took my time, washed my hands and then went downstairs,” she recalls. “But as I went down, I couldn’t believe all the smoke. I thought, ‘Nothing in the oven would smell that bad.’” She stopped on the last steps of the staircase and couldn’t believe her eyes: Paul vanPeenen/NOW flames were shooting up Cassandra Bourke finds some Christmas ornaments that survived the fire that destroyed her home on Tuesday. from the table where their decorations had just sat, and the room was quickly filling us as they went. “They were doing everything I told Coquitlam Fire and Rescue Chief up with smoke. “It felt like hours, although I’m sure Tony Delmonico says the captain them to do. Red Nose volunteers needed John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com Organizers with the local chapter of Operation Red Nose are on the lookout for six additional volunteers to help people get home safely on New Year’s Eve. Although the deadline has passed for new volunteers, organizers hope those who signed up after the program got off the ground in late November will step up to help out again. “Of the list of the 90-plus volunteers that we already have, I’m getting back to them and saying, “If you’re not doing anything for New Year’s Eve, come out and join us,’” said Malcolm Kennedy, volunteer coordinator for the Tri-Cities chapter of Operation Red Nose. So far, 10 teams of three people each have signed up for the Dec. 31 shift, which is expected to run from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The best-case scenario would see 11 or 12 teams, or three to six additional volunteers, available for what will be the busiest night of the season for the service. Organized by the Coquitlam Sunrise Rotary Club, the service matches volunteers with those unable to drive their vehicles home. Proceeds from any donations go towards KidSport Tri-Cities, which helps subsidize registration fees for underprivileged kids. Demand for Operation Red Nose is up over last year. The number of rides has jumped by 64 per cent, while donation totals have increased by 69 per cent. Numbers from the weekend of Dec. 10 and 11 sat at 98. “I think it’s a combination of things: a bit better of an economy, the new drinking driving laws and greater awareness of the program,” said KidSport Tri-Cities chair Chris Wilson. Those looking to help out on New Year’s Eve are asked to e-mail orn@shaw.ca.

The lighter side of policing Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com It takes a creative approach to police rural areas. couldn’t get a better outcome. It’s straight out of a firefighting textbook.” The fire caused $50,000 in damage to the townhouse, which will likely be fixed in a month. Investigators believe a candle started the fire, igniting flammable material on the main floor. Bourke believes it was the family’s advent candle, which is typically lit just before the children go to bed, but the boys begged her to light it in the morning while they decorated. Delmonico pleaded with residents to be extra careful with decorations, electrical plugs, extension cords and any flammable materials like candles. “We don’t want to see anybody go through what
Vancouver had this week,” he said, referring to the house fire started by old Christmas lights and a faulty extension cord that ultimately claimed three lives. “There’s never any good time for something like that, but it’s even worse at Christmas. Luckily, we avoided that.” Bourke, her sons and husband spent the night at a family member’s home in Vancouver, and went back to survey the damage on Wednesday. “I went in there to take some pictures and couldn’t believe it. There was my TV melted to the wall,” she says, adding that nothing is salvageable. “Anything not burned on the main floor or upstairs is toxic. All the mattresses
shouldn’t be used again. They said anything you can’t launder really well can’t be used again.” The family doesn’t have insurance, Bourke says, and the timing is a bit tough since she is giving up her job as a baker at Save-On-Foods to go back to school in the new year. “Honestly, we didn’t have as much foresight as we should have. With renter’s insurance, we always said, ‘We’ll get it next month, we’ll get it next month.’ Then we wouldn’t have the money and that month never came,” she says.

“I tell ya, when we get back in there, it’s going to be a priority.” For now, the family is enjoying making cookies, the Stanley Park miniature train and counting their lucky stars for their Christmas miracle — which includes all three of their cats surviving the fire. And true to form, Bourke is not panicking about what’s next. “It’s just amazing about all the things you don’t worry about when you’re in the moment,” she says. “All you worry about is anyone who is alive in the house.”

Opinion
Hospital gets negative review Re: “Councillors raise hospital concerns,” Friday, Dec. 10. I recently read your article on Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody. Very well said. In 2008, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and was being treated at Vancouver General. My parents both live in Coquitlam so hence, when his complications started around the mid-November mark, we took him to the nearby hospiTo The tal, Eagle Ridge. He needed an oxygen tank and some really good care. The receptionist\nurse at the front of the entrance to emergency was so rude that I had to keep my composure so as to not jump over the desk and strangle her myself. I asked her if they had any extra beds on the third floor so he would be comfortable for the night, as he really wasn’t doing well and the cold wasn’t helping. To this, her response was, “How should I know?” Needless to say, I was stunned. They put him on a gurney and wheeled him into their emergency room along with about 30 other
people. My father had just finished his third round of chemotherapy about three days prior and was very susceptible to any bacteria or viruses. The room they placed him into was so cold that I had to wear my winter coat and scarf. We were scrambling trying to find extra blankets to cover him with. After all the tests were finally over and they told us we could take him, we immediately took him and drove to Editor Vancouver General. My father passed away the next day. Eagle Ridge treats their patients like numbers or cattle, take your pick. The hospital itself is dirty and the staff walk around chit-chatting and not paying attention to what is happening around them. I was appalled and, God forbid, if I ever have so much as a limb hanging from my bone, I will drive that extra half-hour far, far from that place. Gabriela Darling Vancouver

Our View
Spirit of Christmas lasting longer
W
hat is Christmas about? For some, it’s a religious celebration honouring the birth of Christ. For others, it’s a secular holiday focused on gift giving and merriment. For almost everyone, it’s a time to spend with family and friends — as well as to expand the waistline and get ready for that other winter tradition: a new year’s resolution to lose weight. Whether you fall into the religious or the secular camp or somewhere in between, Christmas is probably also the time of year when you think most about the people who don’t have enough. Enough food. Enough hope. Enough opportunities. Whether it’s through a donation to the SHARE food bank, the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle campaign or a charity that helps the developing world, we all like to think we can make a difference in the lives of others. And we can. But there’s another change that seems to be happening as the worldwide economic slowdown drags on. The wish of many to see Christmas “all year long” seems to be coming true — in that we’re now more aware of how each of us needs a hand from time to time. No one, it seems, is immune from job loss these days. And after years of spiralling real estate prices and overspending to maintain a lifestyle we really can’t afford, many of us are so deep in debt we’re one paycheque away from financial ruin. These aren’t good things, but they do make the gap between people who are doing OK and those lined up at the food bank seem smaller. They also make us realize that since anyone could lose the material things they have, “things” aren’t really what matter. Whether your Christmas is religious or secular — or whether you don’t mark the occasion at all — if the goodwill associated with this time of year spreads because we realize others need our help all year round, that’s a good thing. You could even call it the spirit of Christmas.

I think $20 or $30 for a trip in a taxi is a small price to pay in order to avoid risking your life or facing manslaughter charges during the holidays. So to ensure that whatever it is you’re celebrating this week and the next isn’t ruined by a bad choice and rotten turn of fate, put in a conscious effort to make responsible decisions for the well-being of you, your family and the community. The rule of thumb: if you’ve been drinking, don’t drive — period. There’s nothing wrong with downing a glass or two of your favourite beverage while at a festive gathering, but if you tempt ill luck by getting behind the wheel afterward, chances are it will leave a bitter taste in your mouth. Nothing spoils a Merry Christmas faster than a description of your newfound criminal record to go along with that frying pan you sent to your grandmother. It’s quite likely she won’t be very pleased. Keeping that in mind, have a safe and happy holiday!

My View
I mean, honestly, when you get right down to it, even if you believe in God and Jesus and all that stuff, do you really believe in the highly improbable possibility that Christ was actually born on Dec. 25? Dec. 25 didn’t even exist when (and if) Jesus of Nazareth was born in, near or maybe not even close to Bethlehem (depending on which Bible passages you prefer). Mid-winter celebrations — marking the realization that the days were finally starting to get longer again — were rife throughout the northern hemisphere long before some Irish monks saved Christianity by twigging on to the idea of usurping existing indigenous celebrations with Christian dogma. So while I don’t care why you celebrate Christmas — or what you call it (although I do admit to personally preferring the “Christmas” I grew up with) — I wish you would just enjoy it. Enjoy the feeling of togetherness that lights your neighbours’ faces and homes … and yes, their trees. Try to ignore the negativity that some people try to thrust into it, from whatever angle. And have yourself a Merry Christmas!

Please slow down My granddaughter is 12 years old and lives on Chilko Drive in Coquitlam. She has to take the school bus at about 8:10 every morning, Monday to Friday. She walks up to the crosswalk, but no one stops to let her cross. She waits and waits and, one day, stuck out her arm to see if someone would stop. A guy did stop, but just to ask her “What the hell are you doing? You could get your arm ripped off.” Something has to be done to stop all of these speeders going up or down Chilko, not only for my granddaughter, but for all the children and adults too — something more than what is there already. I lost my son, her dad, by a car accident. I don’t want to lose her too. Please, drivers, slow down — then stop at the intersection. Bonnie May Coquitlam

PoCo drafts consultation policy Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com If Port Coquitlam comes to the table, it’s leaving the cheque book at home. Council unanimously approved a policy that states the city will not compensate any party for consultation services, but also decided on Dec. 13 not to distribute the new rules. According to corporate services director Mindy Smith’s report to council, the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee sent a memorandum to councils and boards in 2009 asking them to consider adopting a policy statement on consultation fees. Smith wrote that the committee wants councils to adopt policies of “non-payment of fees for consultation with First Nations as part of the process of obtaining provincial statutory approvals.” The report said the province has a legal duty to confer with and, where appropriate, accommodate First Nations whenever the B.C. government proposes a decision or activity that could impact aboriginal rights. The first arose in 2009 when the Tsleil-Waututh (Burrard) Nation stewardship policy was released and included a fee payment schedule for referrals for consultation. However, the province has also stated that bands do not have legal authority to charge fees to individuals who apply for permit-covering activities on either Crown or privately held land. Twenty-three local governments in Metro Vancouver have since adopted similar policies as a result of the committee’s request. The issue hasn’t arisen locally between Port Coquitlam and the Kwikwetlem First Nation, but Smith wrote that “it does raise larger questions with regard to consultation practices and
processes in general and the need for the city to establish formal policies respecting them.” The draft policy put before council states that the city would not compensate “any party — including, but not limited to, other local governments, senior levels of government, First Nations, other interested third parties and/or the general public — for participation in its consultation and outreach programs (including its land use and management plans).” Making the policy more broad, Smith wrote, “reflects the city’s longstanding approach to consultation processes and reaffirms the city’s belief that all parties be treated the same.” Council unanimously backed the policy, but decided to strike down a second staff recommendation about forwarding the report to the committee and other groups including the Kwikwetlem. Coun. Michael Wright, who served as acting mayor at the meeting, said discussion at council surrounded whether circulating the policy would do more harm than good. “We are trying to create a better working relationship with our neighbours, the Kwikwetlem First Nation. I think that we are, and that there’s some good progress there,” he said. “But one of the members of council brought this up: If we’re really trying to create good relationship here, is this going to set it back?” Wright said the city wants a broad-based policy, and doesn’t want to forward information that could be construed as adversarial. “They may take offence at something like this,” he said. “It’s certainly not directed at First Nations. It’s directed to all levels of government, and that’s the important part.” Wright said the city is not “keeping it a secret” either, and the policy is readily available at City Hall.

Christmas displays brighten up Tri-Cities
T
he skies may be grey and the rain keeps coming down, but there are lots of Tri-Cities homes decorated with lights colourful enough to brighten the spirits of even a grinch. From inflatable Santas to light displays that feature musical accompaniment, a walk or drive by these homes is sure to inspire holiday cheer. If you’re too busy to check them out over the Christmas weekend, many run into January.
Coquitlam: • 1440 Cambridge Dr. — More than 30,000 lights, an electric train, a large nativity scene, five geese pulling a sleigh and more. Donations collected for BC Children’s Hospital. Open from 5:30 to 11 p.m. daily. • 646 Claremont St. — More than 7,000 lights, many strung up on trees and flashing in tune with Christmas carols, and a complete nativity scene featuring Santa, Mrs. Clause and friends. Display is open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily through Jan. 7. Donations collected for the Knights of Columbus charities. Come up the driveway for the best view. • 602 Cottonwood Ave. — More than 12,000 lights on 96 separate circuits controlled by computer and coordinated to music. Tune your car radio to 99.7 FM to hear a broadcast of the music. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday throughout December. Donations accepted for BC Children’s Hospital. • 678 Folsom St. — More than 50,000 computer-controlled lights twinkle, dance and move in patterns that take up to 15 minutes to complete. Santa waves from the rooftop, and a herd of moving reindeer, as well as shooting stars, Frosty the snowman and a 16-foot-long Santa train, entertain.

Indoor plants need extra light during dark winter months
A
t Christmas, it’s ironic that light-loving plants like kalanchoe, poinsettia and chrysanthemums are so often given as gifts — although in this southwest corner of B.C. the reality of our festival of light is often six-hour days of dimness under dark, rain-filled clouds. Much Christmas brightness is created by decorative lights, shining ornaments, plant arrangements, bright wraps on gifts and the inner light of joy and giving. But outside, gloomy skies can persist for weeks on end. Even shade-loving plants such as peace lily, cyclamen and oxalis get discouraged on dim windowsills. The usual pattern is that through December and January many indoor plants begin to look sickly, largely due to light starvation. These signs include plants leaning towards windows on long spindly stems where leaves are unusually far apart. The cheapest and fastest way of bring-

Take Pain Out of the Picture With ACUPUNCTURE
Jane Wang says she has over 34 years of experience as an Acupuncturist. Three of Janes patients attest to the effectiveness of Acupuncture. 1. Mr. Gao is 58 years-old and contracted Shingles with bubbles around the waist area. It caused him a lot of pain for about three months. After Acupuncture treatment, he is free of pain. 2. Mrs. Yong is 52 years-old and complained of headaches and hearing sounds inside her head. She also complained she had ringing in her ears and had difficulties hearing. She came for help and after two sessions plus some TCM medicine, she can now hear normally. 3. Scott is 23 years-old and a senior at SFU. He coughed continually for 3 years but stopped completely after just 3 treatments. He is now strong and coughs no more.
in her garage. Each shelf was wide enough to hold a flat — and each shelf was long enough for two or three flats. Under each shelf (except the bottom one) was a light fixture holding a fluorescent grow-light tube. This kind of plant nursery would be a magnificent Christmas gift for a gardener, and relatively inexpensive for someone who can assemble the equipment. Free-standing units already put together are available in some garden centres. Fluorescent tubes need replacement every year or two since they get dimmer as they age. It’s also very important to keep them dusted.

Engineers’ tweaking of BMW X5 offers a balance of performance with fuel economy.
BMW’s year of the drivetrain David Chao editorial@thenownews.com
A mid-cycle refresh can mean a lot of things in the auto industry. In some cases, a car that hasn’t sold well can get a major boost from an extensive revision. Alternatively, a popular vehicle might gain some styling tweaks and features in order to keep up with newer competitors. For the BMW X5, the mid-cycle refresh is
about taking something great and making it even better. And for 2011, that means a huge advance in drivetrain technology, enhancing the sport activity vehicle’s fuel efficiency while retaining the signature BMW performance. Compare vehicles from the 1990s to their current incarnations, and in many cases you’ll find that the fuel consumption will be similar or worse. While cars have gotten larger and heavier due to both safety requirements and CONTINUED ON PAGE 16, see MOST PEOPLE.

TRI-CITIES AUTOMOTIVE
GUIDE
MOTORING
Most people won’t notice the changes — which is the point customer desires for more space and features, they’ve also become vastly more powerful. Some of that power is necessary to compensate for added bulk, but much of it has certainly been unnecessary. All of that additional power has negated the technological gains we’ve made in recent years. But no longer. The automotive world is poised for a huge step forward in engine technology that will generate industrywide improvements in fuel consumption and emissions. Cutting-edge V-6 engines are producing as much and more power than last year’s V-8s, while dramatically improving fuel efficiency. Turbo-charged inline-fours are finding their way from hot hatchbacks into economical compact sedans. With more hybrids and diesels, advanced transmissions, and greater adoption of all-wheel drive, 2011 is shaping up to be the “year of the drivetrain.” For its part, the popular X5 gains new V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines to go along with its excellent three-litre diesel V-6, as well an impressive eight-speed automatic transmission. Throw in BMW’s extensive list of driver aids and you get a vehicle that’s easily one of the best in its class, putting its power to intelligent use. It may be four years into its generation, but the 2011 X5 might as well be a whole new vehicle. And yes, it’s still a heck of a lot of fun to drive. While the drivetrain upgrades are the major news, the 2011 X5 has gone under the knife for minor surgery, with a revised front fascia that includes massaged headlights, new fog lamps and restyled air intakes. Most people won’t notice the changes unless they’re pointed out in a side-by-side comparison. The X5 was already an attractive vehicle, and BMW’s designers sought to create incentive without risking its good looks. Like all BMWs, the X5 has a clean and Spartan interior, with a car-like dashboard that swells in the middle to house the controls and pinches in at the sides. The LCD screen sits atop the dash in easy view, giving the cabin a logical and business-like feel that’s marred only by the toy-like electronic shifter. The U.S.-built X5 boasts the excellent build quality you’d expect from a vehicle that’s been in production for four years, with all of the bugs worked out of the manufacturing process. Ride quality is BMW stiff, which is to say that it’s firm and connects you to the road, but doesn’t throw passengers around unnecessarily. The
same goes for handling; the steering is direct and accur-
ate, enabling drivers to feel the road. With the added
benefit of the eight-speed automatic’s almost-impercep-
tible shifts, it’s a very rewarding driving experience.

Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing food waste your food. Use a backyard composter to turn food scraps and yard trimmings into soil.
Alternate food scraps with brown leaves to speed up the composting process and
reduce odours. • Food scraps can now be added to yard trimming

Food accounts for about one-third of the residential waste taken to garbage transfer stations in the region, according to Metro Vancouver, even though it’s a resource than can be composted and recycled. When food is thrown into the garbage and buried in a landfill, it generates a powerful greenhouse gas that hastens global warming. That greenhouse gas is methane, which traps about 20 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. This means keeping food out of the garbage is one of the easiest things you can do to fight global warming. Here are some tips, courtesy of Metro Vancouver: • Only buy the food you know will be used. Consider how much each adult and child is likely to eat, then buy the correct portions. Try out the meal planner at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com. • Will you eat out more this holiday season? Maybe you don’t need to buy so much food. • Check out the back of the fridge. Discover what’s hiding in a kitchen cupboard or the bottom of a freezer. Make a shopping list so you don’t buy things you already have. • Will you really consume and eat all that spinach or lettuce before it becomes mush? If you buy 20 pounds of potatoes and throw out old potatoes at the bottom of the bag, are you really saving money by buying in bulk? • Make leftovers part of your meal planning to save time and money. For example, you could bake a chicken for supper on the weekend and use the leftovers for another kind of chicken-based supper during the week. Baked chicken can become a chicken taco or a chicken salad. Meat or poultry bones and leftovers can become soup. • If you have guests over for a big meal, give them some of the leftovers to take home. Or take a nice meal over to a needy neighbour or friend. • If there’s a small amount of cooked food after a meal, pop it into the freezer for a quick and convenient oneperson meal. Or divide larger quantities into one-person containers for lunch, so they are easy to grab in the morning before going to work or school. • Keep checking those “best before” dates in your fridge and kitchen cupboards. Simply consuming foods before they get too old will save you money. • If dinner plans change and too much perishable food remains in the fridge, look for recipes that call for cooked fruit and vegetables. Use up food that’s still good before buying more food. • If food at the back of the fridge is starting to rot and looks like a biology experiment, it’s time to recycle

Calories are energy and too many times prior I wasted my efforts limiting them too extensively in my total food intake. Without enough calories in my diet, I never had enough energy to maintain a regular exercise program. Please keep in mind that I

DANGLING FOR A GOAL: Coquitlam-Moody’s Carly McLeod moves on the attack during the final game of the Fraser Valley ringette tournament two weeks ago in Langley. McLeod would score the game winner to lock up the under-19 A girls division title.
Guerrieres grab tourney gold on late goal
Through a six-game streak, it looked like no one could challenge the Coquitlam-Moody under-19 ringette team — until the final of the Michelle Vandale Memorial ringette tournament in Langley. Under that major test, Coquitlam-Moody — which goes by the name of Belle Guerrieres, a French translation for beautiful warrior — responded by topping Burnaby-New West 4-3 for the tourney title. Burnaby broke a 2-2 tie with 11 minutes left to put Coquitlam-Moody behind for the first time in the tournament. But it didn’t last long, as Hanna Szefer pushed forward and cashed in the equalizer with 7:15 on the clock. Just over a minute later Carly McLeod completed the comeback with the winning goal. To advance to the final the Guerrieres knocked off Quesnel 7-4 in the semifinal. It capped a perfect 6-0 weekend that featured a number of big wins and a hard, gritty rivalry with Burnaby-New West. The two teams met in the round robin, resulting in a narrow 3-2 Coquitlam victory. Netminder Neil Marcus was consistently stellar throughout, posting a 3-0 shutout over Quesnel.
Jaime Gray, Bethany Jervis and Chantal Laurie tallied six goals apiece over the tourney, while every player on the squad posted at least a point. • The Coquitlam-Moody u9 Lightning continued their hot start by sweeping the Delta Ringette Jamboree tournament recently. It featured decisions over Fraser Valley (9-3), PoCoRidge Meadows (10-4) and Surrey (9-3), with the tightest battle coming against Vancouver. In a back-and-forth affair, the Lightning surged on goals by Tyanna Jaco and Sarah Sunderji for a

Claire scored three times while Natalie tallied once and set up another. In the rematch, the Lightning steamrolled to an 80 win, powered by hat tricks from Michelle Bettauer and Kira Cooper and singles by Claire Borden and Tawnika Jaco.

With experience being the primary Achilles of this year’s Terry Fox wrestling lineup, the SFU Elite tournament brought both promise and apprehension. The team showed more of the former than the latter in posting polished results. Led by Kristi Roots’ one-woman demolition show, Fox racked up a couple of impressive finishes against some pretty stiff competition. It all started with Roots, who pinned three straight opponents with no match lasting more than a minute, en route to the 75 kilogram gold title. It earned her an honourable mention for the Outstanding Female Wrestler of the Tournament award. Also delivering an inspiring run was Michael Pope. A day after going through seven matches at the War on the Floor, Pope returned Friday, shook off a cut suffered in the first match, and pushed it to three matches for a strong showing. Picking up a bronze with a win in the consolation final were Dylan Nash, in boys 84 kg, and Kieren Milton, in girls 90 kg. Here are more results: Alana White, 4th, girls 90kg; Dalton Duperreault, 5th boys 110 kg; Justin Ono, 5th 54 kg; Sarah Novicki, 5th girls 54 kg. At SFU’s War on the Floor tournament earlier in the week, Fox emerged with a nice haul. Senior Jordan Wicki carted off the 70 kg crown, while teammates Marko Bevanda and Jeff Tilkin squared off in the jr. 78+ kg category — with Bevanda prevailing. Joining Tilkin with silver rewards were Dalton Duperreault, in senior 110 kg, Milton, in sr. girls 75+, and Sarah Novicki, in sr. 74 kg. In all, Fox novice wrestlers collected nine medals — with 13 of 16 posting top-five finishes. Leading the run to bronze was junior Mitch Alford, who avenged an opening round loss with a win in the consolation final. Dylan Nash, in sr. 84 kg, and Michelyn Bell, in sr. girls 75+ kg, also secured bronze.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships, agreements, negotiations, relocation, opportunities, dealings with the public, and love. This area has become the prime one of your life, and will remain so to at least 2024. You’ve already discovered that others are more stubborn, yet more attractive than they were last decade, and that you must change to accommodate them. Another hint of this arrives Sunday. The choice is love or alienation: nothing in-between. Arguments might arise to midweek (Wednesday). Be diplomatic! Romance, exciting meetings arise Wednesday to Friday. Woo someone! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sweet love and a winning streak fill the weeks ahead! If single, you’ll definitely be attracted to someone. An “instant wedding” could occur. However, realize two things: one, anyone first met (or affair begun) Sunday through Wednesday will always contain jealousy or resentment; and two, in general, loves begun between 2004 and next March (2011) will tend toward unpredictable surprises and sudden changes. Take care with money Monday/ Tuesday. Friends, travel and communications veer toward success Thursday/Friday. Home, family, or an intimate crowd please you most Friday eve, Saturday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious – show talents, display support for others, work hard, protect projects, but launch new ideas, ventures Thursday onward, not before. Sunday will be chore-filled. Relationships loom in importance Monday/Tuesday, but friction is more prevalent than harmony. Realize this is not your decade to win wars – battles maybe, not wars. (On the other hand, you can hop on an elevator of accomplishment if you co-operate.) Deep changes, finances, intimacy and health factors head for a successful conclusion Wednesday to Friday. Delays end! Saturday’s gentle, happy and wise! Taurus April 20-May 20: Wider understanding, compassion, love, far travel, legal matters, advertising, statistics, insurance, religion, concepts, higher education – these come to the fore. Life feels more serene. Still, there are numerous problems Sunday to Wednesday morning – in these very areas. These are complex, subtle problems, in which solutions and causes seem to mingle. Your best approach, unless you have a clear idea, is to sit and wait it out. Recent delays end by Thursday, so you can march forth in relationships, love, negotiations and contracts this day forward. Friday morning’s lucky for these! Gemini May 21-June 20: Mysteries, secrets, psychological depths, intimacy, sexual yearnings, subconscious promptings, large finances, investments and debt, lifestyle changes and commitments – these fill your days over the weeks ahead. Don’t start anything (especially in these areas) before Thursday. You would get caught in an eternal circling around a problem. But Thursday onward promises success. (However, realize this is not a big investment year, with the exception of investment in your own career/ business.) Health matters are significant for several weeks. Enlist a doctor, if needed. Relationships please Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays end Thursday. Don’t start anything before then. This week and the next few nudge you into domestic surroundings and a restful stance. Various problems arise Sunday to Wednesday. You might decide to end a relationship. This is complex, with pluses and minuses. If you feel a calm, quiet disappointment about this situation, that’s your answer. Sunday provides one more clue that this decade focuses on a deep, major change of home. That might be a change of address, or other change. It’s necessary, so flow with it. Chase money Thursday through Friday morning: your luck’s high! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Don’t start any projects or relationships before Thursday. Communications, travel, casual friendships, paperwork and details fill this week and the next few – they will transform this entire decade. Shorter-term, problems and flaws become apparent in these Sunday to Wednesday, connected to work issues or more private, secret shortcomings. Well, work with a good heart. By Wednesday p.m. your energy and charisma rise, and you’re headed toward success, harmony, even love, by Friday daytime! Friday night and Saturday are easy, sensual, good for spending and wooing (not necessarily linked). Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings, spending, selling, possessions and rote learning. A major change rolls slowly through this zone all this decade and half of next. You can build a castle of money! Sunday holds a clue, probably involving your career, ambitions or status. You’re happy Monday to Wednesday, but you face problems and barriers in money and social wishes: be patient. Though you’re tired Thursday/Friday, luck accompanies government or school applications, spiritual and charity efforts. Your energy and charisma rise in time for a New Year’s party! Recent delays end.

Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and confidence surge – for a few weeks. But don’t start anything before Thursday. Until then, handle two concerns: one, you must decide between ending or investing further (more time/effort) in a particular ambition or career direction. If you can’t decide, wait until Thursday/Friday, when you’ll get a lucky glimpse of your future, and how to get there. The second concern is more important, and centres on Sunday: your entire “self” is changing: what you want, and want to be. Think this through Sunday, ponder, take your thoughts seriously. All is good! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to lie low, rest and contemplate for the few weeks ahead. You’ll deal with government agencies, institutions or charitable agencies. Be spiritual. Plan for the future – but don’t make any plans before Thursday. Sunday to Wednesday contains a few subtle hints that your inner world needs transformation. Perhaps your inner anger doesn’t “fit” your larger sense of right and wrong. What’s out of kilter? Be ambitious Thursday through Friday morning – your efforts could end with a stroke of luck! Your social side and optimism emerge just in time for New Years! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes come true, flirtations invite you and your popularity rises – this week and the next couple. Plans and optimism hover around money and possessions. However, proceed cautiously before Thursday – start nothing, not even a relationship. And realize your hopes and your “net worth” are not in agreement – and “net worth” has the final say. Your hopes need a revision, as Sunday will show (subtly or not). When your view turns unselfish, turns to wider topics such as real love, true luck and success enter – Thursday into Friday morning. Saturday’s ambition is achievable! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
