Red Nose volunteers needed John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com Organizers with the local chapter of Operation Red Nose are on the lookout for six additional volunteers to help people get home safely on New Year’s Eve. Although the deadline has passed for new volunteers, organizers hope those who signed up after the program got off the ground in late November will step up to help out again. “Of the list of the 90-plus volunteers that we already have, I’m getting back to them and saying, “If you’re not doing anything for New Year’s Eve, come out and join us,’” said Malcolm Kennedy, volunteer coordinator for the Tri-Cities chapter of Operation Red Nose. So far, 10 teams of three people each have signed up for the Dec. 31 shift, which is expected to run from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The best-case scenario would see 11 or 12 teams, or three to six additional volunteers, available for what will be the busiest night of the season for the service. Organized by the Coquitlam Sunrise Rotary Club, the service matches volunteers with those unable to drive their vehicles home. Proceeds from any donations go towards KidSport Tri-Cities, which helps subsidize registration fees for underprivileged kids. Demand for Operation Red Nose is up over last year. The number of rides has jumped by 64 per cent, while donation totals have increased by 69 per cent. Numbers from the weekend of Dec. 10 and 11 sat at 98. “I think it’s a combination of things: a bit better of an economy, the new drinking driving laws and greater awareness of the program,” said KidSport Tri-Cities chair Chris Wilson. On Tuesday, members of the Coquitlam RCMP rural policing section made a special holiday delivery to an elderly woman living alone in a remote area, which can only be accessed by boat. By chance, the officers met the woman during the past year and began visiting with her

when working in the area. On Tuesday, they delivered a gift basket filled with holiday goodies. “We sign up for this job because we want to help people,” Const. Colin Kent said in a news release, “and working on a detail like the rural team serving two very close-knit and low-crime communities, helping people goes beyond just enforcing the law and keeping the peace.” A large portion of duties for the rural policing section encompasses patrol and visits on an RCMP vessel around the Upper Pitt River and surrounding areas.

Investigators believe a candle started the fire, igniting flammable material on the main floor. Bourke believes it was the family’s advent candle, which is typically lit just before the children go to bed, but the boys begged her to light it in the morning while they decorated. Delmonico pleaded with residents to be extra careful with decorations, electrical plugs, extension cords and any flammable materials like candles. “We don’t want to see anybody go through what

They said anything you can’t launder really well can’t be used again.” The family doesn’t have insurance, Bourke says, and the timing is a bit tough since she is giving up her job as a baker at Save-On-Foods to go back to school in the new year. “Honestly, we didn’t have as much foresight as we should have. With renter’s insurance, we always said, ‘We’ll get it next month, we’ll get it next month.’ Then we wouldn’t have the money and that month never came,” she says.

And true to form, Bourke is not panicking about what’s next. “It’s just amazing about all the things you don’t worry about when you’re in the moment,” she says. “All you worry about is anyone who is alive in the house.”

Hospital gets negative review Re: “Councillors raise hospital concerns,” Friday, Dec. 10. I recently read your article on Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody. Very well said. In 2008, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and was being treated at Vancouver General. My parents both live in Coquitlam so hence, when his complications started around the mid-November mark, we took him to the nearby hospiTo The tal, Eagle Ridge. He needed an oxygen tank and some really good care. The receptionist\nurse at the front of the entrance to emergency was so rude that I had to keep my composure so as to not jump over the desk and strangle her myself. I asked her if they had any extra beds on the third floor so he would be comfortable for the night, as he really wasn’t doing well and the cold wasn’t helping. To this, her response was, “How should I know?” Needless to say, I was stunned. They put him on a gurney and wheeled him into their emergency room along with about 30 other

people. My father had just finished his third round of chemotherapy about three days prior and was very susceptible to any bacteria or viruses. The room they placed him into was so cold that I had to wear my winter coat and scarf. We were scrambling trying to find extra blankets to cover him with. After all the tests were finally over and they told us we could take him, we immediately took him and drove to Editor Vancouver General. My father passed away the next day. Eagle Ridge treats their patients like numbers or cattle, take your pick. The hospital itself is dirty and the staff walk around chit-chatting and not paying attention to what is happening around them. I was appalled and, God forbid, if I ever have so much as a limb hanging from my bone, I will drive that extra half-hour far, far from that place. Gabriela Darling Vancouver

I mean, honestly, when you get right down to it, even if you believe in God and Jesus and all that stuff, do you really believe in the highly improbable possibility that Christ was actually born on Dec. 25? Dec. 25 didn’t even exist when (and if) Jesus of Nazareth was born in, near or maybe not even close to Bethlehem (depending on which Bible passages you prefer). Mid-winter celebrations — marking the realization that the days were finally starting to get longer again — were rife throughout the northern hemisphere long before some Irish monks saved Christianity by twigging on to the idea of usurping existing indigenous celebrations with Christian dogma. So while I don’t care why you celebrate Christmas — or what you call it (although I do admit to personally preferring the “Christmas” I grew up with) — I wish you would just enjoy it. Enjoy the feeling of togetherness that lights your neighbours’ faces and homes … and yes, their trees. Try to ignore the negativity that some people try to thrust into it, from whatever angle. And have yourself a Merry Christmas!

Please slow down My granddaughter is 12 years old and lives on Chilko Drive in Coquitlam. She has to take the school bus at about 8:10 every morning, Monday to Friday. She walks up to the crosswalk, but no one stops to let her cross. She waits and waits and, one day, stuck out her arm to see if someone would stop. A guy did stop, but just to ask her “What the hell are you doing? You could get your arm ripped off.” Something has to be done to stop all of these speeders going up or down Chilko, not only for my granddaughter, but for all the children and adults too — something more than what is there already. I lost my son, her dad, by a car accident. I don’t want to lose her too. Please, drivers, slow down — then stop at the intersection. Bonnie May Coquitlam

PoCo drafts consultation policy Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com If Port Coquitlam comes to the table, it’s leaving the cheque book at home. Council unanimously approved a policy that states the city will not compensate any party for consultation services, but also decided on Dec. 13 not to distribute the new rules. According to corporate services director Mindy Smith’s report to council, the Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee sent a memorandum to councils and boards in 2009 asking them to consider adopting a policy statement on consultation fees. Smith wrote that the committee wants councils to adopt policies of “non-payment of fees for consultation with First Nations as part of the process of obtaining provincial statutory approvals.” The report said the province has a legal duty to confer with and, where appropriate, accommodate First Nations whenever the B.C. government proposes a decision or activity that could impact aboriginal rights. The first arose in 2009 when the Tsleil-Waututh (Burrard) Nation stewardship policy was released and included a fee payment schedule for referrals for consultation. However, the province has also stated that bands do not have legal authority to charge fees to individuals who apply for permit-covering activities on either Crown or privately held land. Twenty-three local governments in Metro Vancouver have since adopted similar policies as a result of the committee’s request. The issue hasn’t arisen locally between Port Coquitlam and the Kwikwetlem First Nation, but Smith wrote that “it does raise larger questions with regard to consultation practices and

processes in general and the need for the city to establish formal policies respecting them.” The draft policy put before council states that the city would not compensate “any party — including, but not limited to, other local governments, senior levels of government, First Nations, other interested third parties and/or the general public — for participation in its consultation and outreach programs (including its land use and management plans).” Making the policy more broad, Smith wrote, “reflects the city’s longstanding approach to consultation processes and reaffirms the city’s belief that all parties be treated the same.” Council unanimously backed the policy, but decided to strike down a second staff recommendation about forwarding the report to the committee and other groups including the Kwikwetlem. Coun. Michael Wright, who served as acting mayor at the meeting, said discussion at council surrounded whether circulating the policy would do more harm than good. “We are trying to create a better working relationship with our neighbours, the Kwikwetlem First Nation. I think that we are, and that there’s some good progress there,” he said. “But one of the members of council brought this up: If we’re really trying to create good relationship here, is this going to set it back?” Wright said the city wants a broad-based policy, and doesn’t want to forward information that could be construed as adversarial. “They may take offence at something like this,” he said. “It’s certainly not directed at First Nations. It’s directed to all levels of government, and that’s the important part.” Wright said the city is not “keeping it a secret” either, and the policy is readily available at City Hall.

t Christmas, it’s ironic that light-loving plants like kalanchoe, poinsettia and chrysanthemums are so often given as gifts — although in this southwest corner of B.C. the reality of our festival of light is often six-hour days of dimness under dark, rain-filled clouds. Much Christmas brightness is created by decorative lights, shining ornaments, plant arrangements, bright wraps on gifts and the inner light of joy and giving. But outside, gloomy skies can persist for weeks on end. Even shade-loving plants such as peace lily, cyclamen and oxalis get discouraged on dim windowsills. The usual pattern is that through December and January many indoor plants begin to look sickly, largely due to light starvation. MOTORING

Most people won’t notice the changes — which is the point customer desires for more space and features, they’ve also become vastly more powerful. Some of that power is necessary to compensate for added bulk, but much of it has certainly been unnecessary. All of that additional power has negated the technological gains we’ve made in recent years. But no longer. The automotive world is poised for a huge step forward in engine technology that will generate industrywide improvements in fuel consumption and emissions. Cutting-edge V-6 engines are producing as much and more power than last year’s V-8s, while dramatically improving fuel efficiency. Turbo-charged inline-fours are finding their way from hot hatchbacks into economical compact sedans. With more hybrids and diesels, advanced transmissions, and greater adoption of all-wheel drive, 2011 is shaping up to be the “year of the drivetrain.” For its part, the popular X5 gains new V-6 and V-8 gasoline engines to go along with its excellent three-litre diesel V-6, as well an impressive eight-speed automatic transmission. Throw in BMW’s extensive list of driver aids and you get a vehicle that’s easily one of the best in its class, putting its power to intelligent use. It may be four years into its generation, but the 2011 X5 might as well be a whole new vehicle. And yes, it’s still a heck of a lot of fun to drive. While the drivetrain upgrades are the major news, the 2011 X5 has gone under the knife for minor surgery, with a revised front fascia that includes massaged headlights, new fog lamps and restyled air intakes. Most people won’t notice the changes unless they’re pointed out in a side-by-side comparison. The X5 was already an attractive vehicle, and BMW’s designers sought to create incentive without risking its good looks. Like all BMWs, the X5 has a clean and Spartan interior, with a car-like dashboard that swells in the middle to house the controls and pinches in at the sides. The LCD screen sits atop the dash in easy view, giving the cabin a logical and business-like feel that’s marred only by the toy-like electronic shifter. The U.S.-built X5 boasts the excellent build quality you’d expect from a vehicle that’s been in production for four years, with all of the bugs worked out of the manufacturing process. Ride quality is BMW stiff, which is to say that it’s firm and connects you to the road, but doesn’t throw passengers around unnecessarily. The

same goes for handling; the steering is direct and accur-

ate, enabling drivers to feel the road. With the added

benefit of the eight-speed automatic’s almost-impercep-

tible shifts, it’s a very rewarding driving experience.

Food accounts for about one-third of the residential waste taken to garbage transfer stations in the region, according to Metro Vancouver, even though it’s a resource than can be composted and recycled. When food is thrown into the garbage and buried in a landfill, it generates a powerful greenhouse gas that hastens global warming. That greenhouse gas is methane, which traps about 20 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Maybe you don’t need to buy so much food. • Check out the back of the fridge. Discover what’s hiding in a kitchen cupboard or the bottom of a freezer. Make a shopping list so you don’t buy things you already have. • Will you really consume and eat all that spinach or lettuce before it becomes mush? If you buy 20 pounds of potatoes and throw out old potatoes at the bottom of the bag, are you really saving money by buying in bulk? • Make leftovers part of your meal planning to save time and money. For example, you could bake a chicken for supper on the weekend and use the leftovers for another kind of chicken-based supper during the week. Baked chicken can become a chicken taco or a chicken salad. Meat or poultry bones and leftovers can become soup. • If you have guests over for a big meal, give them some of the leftovers to take home. Or take a nice meal over to a needy neighbour or friend. • If there’s a small amount of cooked food after a meal, pop it into the freezer for a quick and convenient oneperson meal. Or divide larger quantities into one-person containers for lunch, so they are easy to grab in the morning before going to work or school. • Keep checking those “best before” dates in your fridge and kitchen cupboards. Simply consuming foods before they get too old will save you money. • If dinner plans change and too much perishable food remains in the fridge, look for recipes that call for cooked fruit and vegetables. Use up food that’s still good before buying more food. • If food at the back of the fridge is starting to rot and looks like a biology experiment, it’s time to recycle

Through a six-game streak, it looked like no one could challenge the Coquitlam-Moody under-19 ringette team — until the final of the Michelle Vandale Memorial ringette tournament in Langley. Under that major test, Coquitlam-Moody — which goes by the name of Belle Guerrieres, a French translation for beautiful warrior — responded by topping Burnaby-New West 4-3 for the tourney title. Burnaby broke a 2-2 tie with 11 minutes left to put Coquitlam-Moody behind for the first time in the tournament. But it didn’t last long, as Hanna Szefer pushed forward and cashed in the equalizer with 7:15 on the clock. Just over a minute later Carly McLeod completed the comeback with the winning goal. Led by Kristi Roots’ one-woman demolition show, Fox racked up a couple of impressive finishes against some pretty stiff competition. It all started with Roots, who pinned three straight opponents with no match lasting more than a minute, en route to the 75 kilogram gold title. It earned her an honourable mention for the Outstanding Female Wrestler of the Tournament award. Also delivering an inspiring run was Michael Pope. A day after going through seven matches at the War on the Floor, Pope returned Friday, shook off a cut suffered in the first match, and pushed it to three matches for a strong showing. Picking up a bronze with a win in the consolation final were Dylan Nash, in boys 84 kg, and Kieren Milton, in girls 90 kg. At SFU’s War on the Floor tournament earlier in the week, Fox emerged with a nice haul.
