Mexican vacation turns into a nightmare Husband of Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Diane Thorne held in jail cell, but couple says they’ll be back Dan Olson dolson@thenownews.com A Tri-Cities MLA and her husband say they will return to Mexico — despite enduring a horrific experience that included a jail cell and an apparent shakedown that cost them approximately $1,500. Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Diane Thorne and her husband Neil Edmondson have vacationed in Mexico more than a dozen times over the past 30 years, but their most recent trip included seeing a side of the country they had, until now, only experienced through the media. Edmondson spent eight tense hours in a city jail following a car accident that had all the markings of a shakedown. The experience nearly sent the 78-year-old retiree — who has severe asthma and has suffered a couple of strokes — to the hospital. “We’ve never had any family or friends that have had a bad experience, that we know of, in Mexico,” Edmondson told The NOW in an exclusive interview. “We’ve never had a bad experience, but this time.” Although the Mexican police and justice system have been in the media and political spotlight before, both Edmondson and Thorne, 67, have had nothing but glowing words to describe the country and its people. That is, until the morning of Monday, Jan. 10, in the Yucatán port city of Progreso, where the rental car Edmondson was driving was hit by two motorcycles. The couple was three-quarters of the way into a five-week trip when they were travelling in the left-hand lane of a one-way street, preparing to turn off. Fellow Coquitlam residents Larry Talson and Fran Miller were in the car with them. The motorcyclists raced up on Edmondson’s left before hitting the car. Both riders and their passengers were sent flying, but two got up quickly and sped off. The others remained at the scene, with one young man nursing his shoulder. “The first thing I did when I got out of the car was I went up and asked them if they were OK,” Edmondson said. “He seemed to be fine, but they were moaning and groaning a bit.”

Neil Edmondson and Diane Thorne’s troubles began when their rental car was hit by two motorcycles. Ushered into a four-by-eight-foot A witness from across the street caught their attention, confirming in interrogation room, Edmondson proceeded to wait, anxious about the halting English what had happened. “She was yelling immediately from situation. He was questioned once and, after a couple of hours, was her corner [to Neil], ‘Not your fault, allowed to take a bathroom break not your fault,’” Thorne recalled. — while an armed officer watched Within moments, an ambulance over him. and police arrived, “It was the worst as did an American experience of my who offered his life, being in a interpreting skills. “You hear about he said. “All Although police people being put away jail,” I’m thinking about would not allow in a Mexican jail, and is you hear about Thorne to accompany Edmondson to five years later they people being put away in a Mexican the station to help are still there.” jail, and five years straighten everything later they are still out, they did permit there because the the man, who introNeil Edmondson law is, well, there is duced himself as Coquitlam Resident no law.” Pedro, to join them. A representative “The first thing from the auto insurthat I saw inside [the ance carrier was even at the station, police station] was a guy lying face offering assurances that all costs down on the floor in handcuffs,” would be covered. Edmondson said. “There were five After four hours of waiting and or six policemen standing there, all worrying and not hearing anything with guns or rifles. One had a rifle from her husband, Thorne called the aimed at this guy’s back. Another station. She reached Edmondson and was kicking him, not hard, but heard that he needed US$2,000 to enough to get his attention.”
secure his release. With the assistance of Talson and Miller, Thorne managed to gather enough pesos to take to the jail. She was shocked to find her husband, exhausted and shaking, in a small dingy room in the cellblock. “Neil was in total shock. I could see that,” she said. “He was weak from the strain, but I had all of his medicine with me … When I came in, I had a moment of rage and began swinging Neil’s bag of medicine in the face of one policeman. Neil asked me to just stop, to calm down and I had to, because I could see it wasn’t helping.” The money went to cover a litany of expenses that supposedly included $1,000 (all figures in US dollars) to the family of the injured man, and a $25 impound fee. Pedro also claimed to have paid the police $250 to release Edmondson, which would be reimbursed the next day, plus another $200 for their assistance during the ordeal. Altogether, they estimate the experience cost them $1,520. In hindsight, Pedro’s fortuitous arrival at the crash scene and his
having exactly $250 to pay the officers seemed beyond coincidence, but Edmondson believes the American saved his life. “I think it was all part of one great big scam. I hate to say Pedro was part of it, but it’s funny he came around when he did and funny he had, supposedly, 2,500 pesos in his pocket to pay off the cops. I never gave the cops any money … It was a horrible, horrible experience, but I felt [Pedro] was my lifesaver. I don’t know what I’d have done without him. “He was saying, ‘Stay calm, Neil. It will all work out.’ Even if he was in on it, I got the feeling that I may not have survived the evening without him there.” Add in a bill for car repairs, despite the insurance policy they were required to purchase upon renting the sedan, and the whole experience makes for a cautionary tale. But it didn’t completely rob the couple of their faith in the people of Mexico. Edmondson said while his first impulse after arriving home on Jan. 20 was to avoid the country, he now wants to return to enjoy the hospitality of those he has come to know. But he’ll never rent a car again. “After a lot of soul searching and thought, I’m definitely going back to Mexico again,” he said. “I won’t hold it against the people, who are wonderful. Ninety-nine-point-nine per cent are just trying to make a living.” When contacted for comment on this story, Alberto Lozano, press attaché for the Mexican Embassy based in Ottawa, gave the following statement: “We are taking very seriously any incident involving Canadian citizens in Mexico. We are deeply concerned about Mrs. Diane Thorne and her husband Neil Edmondson’s sad experience in Mexico. “We will contact authorities in the state of Yucatán to find out what happened, and we will try to contact Mr. Edmondson and Mrs. Thorne in order to let them know that every Canadian travelling into Mexico is very important for us. Among our higher priorities right now is ensuring that Mexican visitors have a safe CONTINUED ON PAGE 4, see EMBASSY.

Students practise earthquake safety Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Drop! Cover! Hold on! If the Big One hits, Tri-Cities students know exactly what to do. More than 40 local schools participated in The Great British Columbia ShakeOut, Canada’s largest-ever earthquake drill, held Wednesday across the province. Wendy Bennett, District 43’s health and safety manager, said the results were impressive. Students kept their cool and weren’t shaken by the drill. “They were awesome. The kids, they know what to do. It doesn’t phase them in the slightest,” Bennett said Thursday. “They’ve got it down cold. I am so confident that when anything big happens, they’re going to be OK.” Every school in the district conducts earthquake drills frequently throughout the year, so the routine is familiar to students, she added. “The procedure is the same from kindergarten to Grade 12, so the kids understand it and they know it. They know exactly what to do. It’s really, really good to see.” The cities of Coquitlam, PoCo and Port Moody also participated in the drill. According to organizers, 10 per cent of B.C. residents took part.

“There was a significant uptake and increase in the awareness of the importance of reading to your child at any stage.” That’s why the Books for Babies program was typically attached to the public health model, she explained — to ensure a holistic approach to childhood development. Once the books were delivered to every library in B.C., the communities would decide how to get the book and resource kits into parents’ hands. That would allow a discussion to arise to dispel notions that reading is unimportant. “In most cases it was through the public health nurses. They’re the single best advocate for reading,” Piprell said. “If they see there are no books in the home or it’s a home that would require more encouragement, then they’ll really talk up the package when we give it to them … “One of our children’s librarians was talking to a young mom, and they were finding them saying, ‘Why should we be reading?’ Although they were young professionals, they didn’t understand the need.” Donations are welcomed online at http://books4babies.bclibrary.ca/for-supporters. Police are waiting on results from an autopsy before deciding whether charges will be considered after a child died in a Coquitlam daycare last week. Coquitlam RCMP Const. Kristina Biro said no arrests have been made and no charges are being considered until investigators receive the results of an autopsy performed by the B.C Coroners Service.
The results are expected to take several more weeks. “Our primary concern is always public safety. If there was any reason to believe that any aspect of this case presented a credible threat to public safety or, more specifically, the safety of children in our community, we would be in front of every camera in the country saying so,” Biro said in a news release. “But what we are investigating here is a single, tragic incident that presents no such threat, and our focus
now is on conducting an efficient and thorough investigation and protecting the well-being of the families that have been impacted.” Police were called to the Rattle-NRoll home-based daycare in the 1300 block of Shaughnessy St. just before noon on Monday, Jan. 17. A one-year-old boy who attended the daycare had died. RCMP obtained a search warrant and entered the Coquitlam home Saturday night. Investigators searched the unlicensed facility through the
night and into Sunday morning. Police are not disclosing information about the search. “We understand that this incident has raised a lot of questions for the public,” Biro said. “And we remain committed to releasing as much information as we can as soon as we can to answer those questions. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our community as our investigators continue to work to determine exactly what happened in this case.”

Setting it straight
Incorrect information appeared in the “Break-andenter suspect nabbed carrying unique coins” story that appeared in the Wednesday, Jan. 26 edition of The NOW. Port Moody police indicated that the department’s canine unit had attended the break-in in the Klahanie area, but this is incorrect. The unit attended the Sunday morning stabbing that took place on St. Johns Street.

Port Moody wants hospital answers Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com
Coun. Mike Clay invited the executive of the Fraser Health Authority and the municipal councils of Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam,
expansion of Eagle Ridge Hospital to fulfill what it was intended to fulfill. It never really reached that mandate,” Trasolini said Wednesday. “The area has grown. It’s one of the fastest growing areas of the province. The needs are right here, but the needs are not being met.” However, according to Val Spurrell, the hospital’s acute care program director, plans are being put to action. She said last month that 80 per cent of the recommendations are either implemented or are being implemented.

What is the role and mandate of Eagle Ridge Hospital? The City of Port Moody wants to know. Council is calling on Fraser Health to quickly and publicly address 27 recommendations included in a 2009 service review of the hospital. The highest priority would be to clarify and communicate the role and mandate of the hospital, while also filling medical leadership positions. The issue first surfaced last month when Coquitlam council passed a similar motion and called on neighbouring municipalities for support. Coquitlam’s resolution stated that the hospital “has never reached its objective of being a fully functioning community hospital” since it opened in 1984. It states that “Eagle Ridge Hospital has no clearly defined role and mandate” and is at its highest capacity at 127 beds, although it was built to accommodate 200. Coquitlam also invited Fraser Health and local councils to discuss the matter. Port Moody Coun. Mike Clay stood behind this idea of a joint meeting. “Included in Coquitlam’s motion is something that I fully support … They had
Port Coquitlam and Port Moody to discuss these matters jointly,” Clay said at Tuesday’s council meeting. “I think that a joint discussion with our neighbouring municipalities would be very valid. I also would love to have that conversation and these answers.” Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini said the community needs action instead of just long-term plans. “In the northeast sector, there’s different mayors and councils. Opinion
Smart meters are long overdue I was absolutely shocked when I heard that $100 million is being lost by BC Hydro every year due to electricity theft, most of it stolen by organized crime groups to power illegal grow-ops. That’s $100 million every year that gets added to your hydro bill and mine. As an honest BC Hydro customer, I don’t like that one bit. Why hasn’t BC Hydro moved faster to bring in the kind of smart technology and smart meters that can put an end to electricity theft? The archaic meter technology BC Hydro has on the ground hasn’t changed since my grandparents were kids, and it can’t do anything other than crudely To The measure how much electricity has gone through it. Can you imagine what it would be like if we were still using the same archaic appliances, phones, TVs and radios that were around in the 1940s and 1950s? What a joke that would be. So why are we still using the same electricity meters from that era that can’t do any of the smart things current meter technology can do like detecting electricity theft? As far as I’m concerned, smart meters can’t get installed fast enough. Zeroing in on electricity theft in this province, the reputed grow-op capital
of North America, should be a major priority and I can’t wait to see the offenders cut off from their $100-million-a-year free teat. Mike Taylor Port Moody
Ambulance situation a concern
Re: “Paramedics need a proper location to work out of,” letter to the editor, Friday, Jan. 7. Our ambulance services are an essential service, and paramedics are the first responders to arrive at a critical medical emergency. Now, due to bureaucratic bungling, Editor they are left roaming the streets with no home base. To restock and decontaminate their ambulances, they will need to travel to Riverview Hospital. This is unacceptable. The word on the street is if paramedics are asked to report to Port Moody, they will refuse — so where does that leave the 32,000 residents of Port Moody? We should all be very concerned about this compromised care. H. Bott Port Moody

Our View
Generous residents continue to give
T
he Christmas trees have been chipped, the wrapping has been recycled and we’ve been wearing the sweaters and other holiday clothing we received for more than a month now. There was a delay, however, in adding up the final tally for the 2010 Pennies for Presents campaign, which helps SHARE buy toys for TriCities kids who would otherwise go without. We had to wait until Scotiabank obtained approval to match the funds it received in donations from residents. That approval went through, and we now have the grand total: $21,062.27 — a full $3,000 more than the community donated one year before. That’s astounding. Even though the recession has officially been over for some time now, it’s no secret that many in our community are struggling financially. As they cope with layoffs and other stresses, money is tight. Still, this is a caring community and people always seem to come through when non-profit societies ask for help. SHARE’s director of development Heather Scott says the donations eased the worries of Tri-Cities parents who were faced with the prospect of not being able to afford any holiday gifts for their kids. Robyn Neff, the branch manager of Scotiabank Coquitlam Centre, says it was unbelievable how many people came into the bank and emptied out their pockets and piggybanks to donate. Each year, Tri-Cities residents amaze us with their generosity, and we feel privileged to be part of this campaign. A special thanks goes out to staff at the Boulevard Casino, who spent a lot of time during the Christmas season counting coins for the campaign — a task that would have required a virtual army of penny rollers. But most of all, thanks to each of you who took the time to donate. Whether it was a handful of change or a year’s worth of loonies and toonies, it made a difference in the lives of local kids. Join us next year, as we try once again to top another great record.

Could it be a lack of well-educated, responsible figures portrayed in the media or the less-thanupstanding citizens who have taken their place? Is their negative influence to blame for what we now consider to be acceptable traits of a well-rounded individual? Have we somehow run out of decent mentors or could it simply come down to a generation too stubborn to accept the wisdom and guidance of others? Whatever the reason may be, I feel the time has come to stop expecting a fairy godmother to magically appear and instead to take on the task of setting a positive example for the next procession of impressionable minds. another go figure!). The fact that our Alaskan fellow was watching a porn movie when the car he was driving careened off the road makes him seem only a tiny bit more stupid. But it does, indeed, make his stupidity come off as being somewhat more laughable. At least in wide-open, sparsely populated Alaska, accidental human contact may tend to occur less frequently, and thus may allow stupidity to be more readily survivable and less severely punished (or conceivably, as in Palin’s case, it might even be rewarded). Unfortunately, however, we don’t all live in the great State of Alaska, and stupidity on the scale of texting while driving can prove to be a fatal character flaw — not only fatal for the texter, but also for any poor sap who happens to be proximal to the texter. So if you have so little regard for your own life that you feel no compunction about putting your stupidity on display on the highways and byways, at least give a thought for the poor sap in the next car who would like one day to dance at his children’s — and his grandchildren’s — weddings. Port Moody sign bylaw ‘the height of foolishness’ Re: “Sign bylaw impacts farmers market,” Wednesday, Jan. 26. So Mayor Joe Trasolini and members of Port Moody city council — to quote Mayor Trasolini from your Jan. 26 edition — “don’t have the luxury of breaking bylaws” that, apparently in the socalled City of the Arts, make it an offence to use temporary signs to promote shows of the Port Moody Art Association and make it an offence to use temporary signs to promote the Coquitlam Farmers Market, which we permit in our recreation centre facilities. I have to ask, Why don’t our elected representatives fix the bylaw? If they don’t, then we should throw out the whole lot of them come November. This situation is the height of foolishness, and it is giving our community a bad reputation. Jim Peacock Port Moody

Other buckets set out at the Port Moody Police Department, for example, typically turned out to have backbreaking weights. In addition to masses of community donations, an extra bucket was kept in the dispatch office where officers coming on and off shift would clean out their pockets of change. The Vancouver Police Department, hearing about the cause, collected $32.55 from members and drove out earlier this month to donate. The record-setting total would not have been possible without Scotiabank’s generous donation, as part of its corporate matching program. Ring in new year with healthy twist on Chinese fare T
here’s nothing wrong with losing a bit of the fat in Gung Hay Fat Choy celebrations. The Year of the Rabbit begins on Feb. 3, 2011 — a week that will be marked with feasts of celebration and other cultural activities throughout the Chinese community. This year, Chinese new year falls within National Heart Month, so it’s a great time for all families to add some heart-healthy Chinese dishes to their dinner tables to celebrate this important cultural festival while remembering to honour our hearts. According to dietitian Gloria Tsang, founder of HealthCastle.com, there are many healthy ingredients in Chinese cooking — even though it tends to get a bad rap. “Many people think of fat-heavy dishes like lemon chicken or spring rolls when they think of Chinese food,” Tsang says. “But there are many heart-healthy ingredients that have been part of Chinese cooking for centuries.” Here are Tsang’s top five ingredients for making heart-healthy Chinese dishes at home:
Citrus
Citrus fruits like oranges, pomelos and tangerines are good sources of flavonoids, antioxidants that contribute to heart health. Of course, they’re also packed with vitamin C. Toss these traditional symbols of happiness and good fortune into stir fries or use the juice instead of salad dressing.
Brown rice
Rice and Chinese cooking go hand-in-hand, but whole-grain brown rice is much better for your heart than white rice. Whole grains like brown rice can reduce heart disease by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Use brown rice instead of white rice in any Chinese recipe.
Bok choy
Bok choy is packed with vitamins A and C, phytonutrients and folate, which add up to one heart-healthy vegetable. Plus, it’s very filling, high in fibre and low in calories. Try stir-frying it in a non-stick pan or tossing it into your salad.
Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish have been
shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. Cod and sea bass are more prevalent on the Chinese menu, but you can use any fish you prefer. Try steaming with ginger or topping with black bean sauce. Chinese new year is a perfect time to enjoy Asian cooking at home. With these tips, it’s easy to celebrate your heart at the same time by incorporating heart-healthy ingredients into your Chinese meals. More healthy eating tips from registered dietitians are available at www. HealthCastle.com.
Tofu
Soy, the source of tofu, has been shown to help lower cholesterol and triglycerides and prevent heart disease. To add more hearthealthy soy to your Chinese cooking, use tofu to replace meat. Try a stir-fried tofu (firm) and

GUIDE
Touareg: more of everything editorial@thenownews.com
I
ntroduced in 2003, the original Touareg was supposed to be unique and different from the traditional SUVs. And it was — for a brief period of time. Sharing its platform with the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen’s first crossover SUV was widely praised by the media and consumers, but eventually fell to the wayside as the luxury SUV market exploded. VW had caught up to BMW and MercedesBenz, only to fall back into the pack. It couldn’t beat out the established and popular X5 for performance, and wasn’t in the same league as a Land Rover or Jeep when it comes to climbing rocks. It also suffered from a public that hadn’t fully accepted Volkswagen as a maker of luxury vehicles. Still, the Touareg soldiered on with a cache of loyal owners who recognized it for what it was: one of the most rewarding, jack-of-all-trades SUVs you could buy. The Volkswagen excelled in many areas of the performance facets. It was a fun-to-drive family mover that looked good and — perhaps most importantly — delivered good value. What’s not to like about that? Following a 2008 refresh (after which it was briefly known as the Touareg 2), Volkswagen has taken the wraps off of a new model. And this time around, the Touareg isn’t trying to be different from the masses in any particular way — it’s trying to be better than them in every possible way. The 2011 model is a beautifully crafted car that feels almost Audi-ish in terms of the quality of design and construction. Where performance
is concerned, it’s closer to its Cayenne and Audi Q7 cousins, but maintains the sensibility we expect from VW vehicles. There’s a TDI diesel engine, of course, and Volkswagen will soon bless the Touareg with its first hybrid powertrain. It is, in short, an extremely pleasant surprise, taking everything we liked about the Touareg and raising the bar about three or four notches. If you still aren’t convinced that Volkswagen should be building luxury vehicles, this might be the one that will change your mind.
Design
VW’s new design language is clean and athletic, but may be a little too plain for some tastes. The new grille looks great, cutting across the face from headlamp to headlamp, and the sculpted side panels give the SUV an athletic stance. However, the rear is just a bit too generic, lacking any notable details beyond the triangular tailpipes. The most striking thing about the Touareg is definitely its overall shape and profile, which looks so much leaner and purposeful than last year’s model, despite slight gains in length and width. It’s helped along by a sloping roofline that makes the SUV seem almost hatchback-like. The interior is very upscale and well-executed, coming closer to the simple elegance of its Audi cousins without compromising the Volkswagen feel. With twin, chrome-ringed dials bracketing a colour LCD, the gauge cluster feels sporty and business-like at the same time — a sense that extends throughout the cabin. You know you’re doing well when leatherette seating surfaces feel good, and that’s exactly the case here. While upper trims get full leather,
owners of the base Touareg will be more than satisfied. Similarly, the quality of the switchgear, wood trim and plastics is excellent.
The 2011 Touareg features a more stylized front grille than other VW models for an extra touch of luxury.
Performance
Powered by a 3.6-litre V-6 with 280-hp and 265 lb-ft of torque or a three-litre TDI V-6 that produces 225-hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, the Touareg can compete with the best luxury mid-size SUVs when it comes to power. 4Motion all-wheel drive is standard equipment, along with a new eight-speed transmission. The hybrid powertrain will use the 3.6-litre V-6, enabling the Touareg to run on gasoline, electricity or both at once. However, it’s a bit disappointing that VW didn’t take a run at a diesel-electric hybrid, seeing as few automakers have its expertise. Boasting much sportier performance than the firstgeneration Touareg, the 2011 model is clearly gunning for BMW’s X5. It’s highly responsive, and perhaps on par with the Porsche Cayenne in terms of overall handling (though it’s not as powerful). Much of that comes from the significant mass that VW cut out, reducing curb weight by 208 kg. Perhaps the only downside with respect to performance CONT. ON PAGE 14, see ROOMY.

is the stiff ride, which will be too firm for some passengers. The Touareg is comfortable in motion, but you’ll notice long rides when the vehicle comes to a full stop.
PLUS
Environment
You expect a quiet cabin in a vehicle with luxury intentions, but you also expect a diesel engine to be very loud. So, it’s seriously impressive just how well the Touareg TDI dampens the noise coming from under the hood. VW designers clearly paid attention to customer concerns, finding more space for everything. The front seats are roomy in all directions, while the rear seats slide and recline slightly. There’s more cargo space in the rear, and up front the Touareg benefits from deep cupholders, a goodsized centre console, large map pockets and an excellent glovebox. While upmarket models get a keyless start button, the base trim has a bulky key fob that has to be inserted into a socket and turned to start the engine. It’s a clumsy arrangement, and VW’s standard folding key would be much better. GPS navigation is standard equipment in every Touareg, and it comes with a great touchscreen instead of the control-wheel arrangements that we’re seeing in more and more vehicles. While the latter arrangement reduces glare on the LCD, touchscreens are often much easier to use.

The NOW COQUITLAM, PORT COQUITLAM, PORT MOODY, ANMORE AND BELCARRA
When we think about wireless in Canada, we think about wireless in your community. At Bell we are proud to be at the forefront of Canada’s world-class wireless industry. And our definition of Canada includes small, rural and growing communities. That’s why, unlike others, we’ve invested billions of dollars to build the fastest and largest high-speed wireless network across Canada,1 reaching over 96% of the population. That contributes to an environment in which virtually every individual and business can access the information, entertainment and productivity tools they need both at home and abroad. A key focus in deploying the network was the delivery of wireless broadband access both to urban markets and to previously underserved small and rural communities. Having access to this network, and leading-edge devices like Turbo Hubs, Turbo Sticks, Tablets and the latest Smartphones, means communities like yours can be more productive, leading to economic efficiency, job growth, access to education and information, and the ability to market locally produced goods and services not just to the rest of Canada, but to the world. Our next leap forward will be a 4G network capable of delivering wireless speeds of over 100 Mbps. And we hope to deploy urban and rural concurrently, so that everyone can benefit equally and everywhere.
(1) With compatible HSPA/HSPA+ devices. Based on comparison of national networks and tests of average upload and download speeds in large urban centres across Canada and total square kms of coverage; on the shared HSPA+ network available from Bell vs. Rogers HSPA/HSPA+ network. Excludes roaming partners’ HSPA and GSM/Edge coverage in certain parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Speed may vary due to topography, environmental conditions, device type and other factors. HSPA+ not available in all areas. Bell.ca/network.

Natural cold remedies popular
anadians continue to seek more natural options in everything from food to cleaning products. This trend is starting to spill over into medicine as well, in particular cold and flu remedies. Immune boosting supplements saw double digit growth in sales over the past year, according to Nielsen data. And recalls of some wellknown pain relievers in the last year sounded an alarm bell nationwide and may be further fuelling interest in alternative nature-based treatments. Here are some natural cold and flu remedies from pharmacist Sherry Torkos, who is also the author of the Canadian Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine.
In the cupboard
• Chicken soup: Not only does it provide easily absorbed nutrients, science actually backs up the legendary claim that chicken soup is one of
the most beneficial hot fluids. Chicken soup contains compounds that reduce inflammation, thin secretions and relieve congestion, thus helping to reduce cold symptoms. • Honey: Honey has antiinflammatory, immune-supporting and cough-suppressant properties. Make your own cough syrup by mixing a quarter-cup of buckwheat honey and a quarter-cup of apple cider vinegar. Pour the mixture into a jar or bottle and seal tightly. Shake well. Take one tablespoon every four hours. • Salt: Make a saline solution to relieve congestion, clear the nasal passages and help wash away viral particles and bacteria. You can purchase a sinus-rinsing tool called a neti pot at a pharmacy or health food store, or use a squeeze-bottle to deliver the saline solution to your nose. To make a saline solution at home, mix one quarter of a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. Use three or four drops in each nostril, five to
six times daily. Saline can also be used as a gargle to help relieve a painful sore throat.
From the fridge
• Yogurt: The beneficial or probiotic bacteria in yogurt help to support immune function. In some studies, participants who ate three-quarters of a cup of yogurt a day before and during cold season had 25-per-cent fewer colds. • Peppers: The hot stuff in peppers is called capsaicin and is pharmacologically similar to guaifenesin, an expectorant found in some cough syrups. This similarity often shows that eating hot and spicy foods can clear up mucous and ease that stuffy nose.
Store supplements
• Ginseng and mushrooms: Protecting your immune system with clinically proven natural supplements — such as those formulated with proprietary extracts of American ginseng and reishi mushrooms — is a sound measure

Jane Wang says she has over 34 years of experience as an Acupuncturist. Three of Jane's patients attest to the effectiveness of Acupuncture. 1. Mr. Gao is 58 years old and contracted Shingles with bubbles around the waist area. It caused him a lot of pain for about three months. After Acupuncture treatment, he is free of pain. 2. Mrs. Yong is 52 years old and complained of headaches and hearing sounds inside her head. She also complained she had ringing in her ears and had difficulties hearing. She came for help and after two sessions plus some TCM medicine, she can now hear normally. 3. Scott is 23 years old and a senior at SFU. He coughed continually for 3 years but stopped completely after just 3 treatments. He is now strong and coughs no more. B.C. MEDICAL COVERAGE AVAILABLE

Beers, Loewen head up WLA draft wish list Les Wingrove knows what he wants, but will take what he can get. Speaking to The NOW two weeks in advance of the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) draft, the Adanacs’ general manager didn’t tip his hand on who his club will look to select fifth overall. Instead, the Adanacs will approach the draft like a Sunday morning yard sale — rummage through the pile and take what’s left. “We normally draft looking to take the best player available,” said Wingrove, whose club will select fifth in each of the first six rounds. A projected top-15 drafteligible players list circulated last week by WLA officials was highlighted by six junior Adanacs making the cut: Matt Beers, Dan Lewis, Riley Loewen, Garrett McIntosh, Nick Bilic and Brodie MacDonald. A handful of former Port Coquitlam Saints — who ended the season in Delta — also cracked the projected top 15. Scott Jones, Trevor Evans and Darcy Cummings helped round out the five Delta players expected to be taken within the first two and a half rounds. As for the consensus top two picks, Wingrove doesn’t have to look far to get a read on this year’s most coveted prizes. “The two names that are getting tossed around the most are Matt Beers and Riley Loewen,” Wingrove said. “Beers is a leader and hardnosed defender, and Riley Loewen is a very skilled left hander that can put the ball into the net.” Wingrove noted that he’s put the feelers out in trying to move up the draft order, but couldn’t find a dance partner. “We expect we’ll probably be drafting where we’re positioned at right now,” he said. The WLA draft is set for Feb. 8 in Burnaby.

Gleneagle basketball players Jessica Jazdarehee (left) and Breeana Yee (right) are helping the Talons compete in the tough Valley North bracket.
Anderson preaches team-first concept Kevin Cawthra sports@thenownews.com
T
he Gleneagle Talons senior girls basketball team follows one motto: teamwork makes the dream work. For head coach Patty Anderson, that motto has proven to be golden. After a seven-year break from coaching at the senior level, Anderson is leading a young group into the always tough Fraser Valley North League. “I’m glad to be back, and I’m glad I’m starting with this beautiful group of girls … I love this team,” said Anderson. A string of tournaments have helped shape the team’s game for the regular season, including a successful run through the Carney Classic, and most recently the Top 10 Centennial tournament. The team was called upon as an emergency replacement team to participate in the Top 10 Centennial tournament, after Kelowna dropped out due to road conditions the previous week. The girls did a good job of maintaining a .500 record for the weekend tournament. The girls opened up the proceedings against the host Centennial Centaurs, a squad led by coach Rob
Sollero. The Talons had a 12-point lead at halftime, but then a tough second half saw Gleneagle wither in the fourth quarter, leading to a 63-59 loss. They then bounced back against Yale later that night with spirited 57-32 victory. The following day, Gleneagle went on to post a 41-39 win over Oak Bay, a club that’s previously been ranked as high as No. 2 in the province. The Talons lost to Carson Graham to close out the tourney, and eventually placed ninth in the 16-team loop. Prior to that tournament, the Talons posted quite the successful run in the Carney Classic. Led by Jessica Jazdarehee’s MVP performance, the girls went on to win the big prize after beating St. Patrick’s Secondary 54-34 in the final. They gained further experience during the Christmas break, travelling down to San Diego, Calif., to participate in an exhibition tournament. The girls played against high-calibre U.S. squads and qualified for the bronze medal match, but due to terrible weather conditions in San Diego, they had to skip the game and catch a flight back home. They also competed at Douglas College in a tournament during the break, another valuable experience for a club that boasts only one Grade 12 and three Grade 11 players amongst its ranks.
This newly revamped senior team definitely qualifies for the rebuilding tag, however they don’t use it as an excuse. While their youthful energy has resulted in mistakes, Anderson said they’ve been quick to learn. “Communication is terrible, I ask them all the time how it’s possible to get through a game without talking — it’s crazy,” she said. “It will cost us some games, however [to] their credit, we are a new team and we are gelling.” Now well into the season, progress is being made even on that front. The chatter is starting to bridge the gap between junior experience and senior competition. “We are hard-working [and] we play as a team. We don’t worry about who gets the points, [they] are very unselfish, very disciplined,” said Anderson. “We have a bit of speed, a bit of an inside game, a bit of an outside game, and the scoring is always distributed. We don’t have one particular go-to person, we are truly a team.” In the chaotic nature of the Fraser Valley North, those characteristics could carry them a long way — with a Fraser Valley berth first on their to-do list. “We have done very well to date,” Anderson said. “We will compete with any team; not always beat them, but we will compete.”
COQUITLAM METRO-FORD SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
After having suffered their first loss of the season last week, the Under 14 Chargers faced the undefeated Vancouver FC this past weekend. The Chargers gave up an early goal but - led by the outstanding play of midfielder JESSICA FILIPPELLI - they battled back tenaciously and eventually claimed all 3 points with a well-deserved 3-2 victory. Not only did Jessica play very well defensively, she also led the way offensively with her soft first touch and quick passes. To cap off a brilliant individual performance, Jessica scored the winning goal near the end of the match when she unleashed JESSICA FILIPPELLI a wicked free kick from well outside the penalty area into the Coquitlam Metro-Ford CHARGERS top corner of the Vancouver net. For her impressive performance this past weekend, JESSICA FILIPPELLI has been chosen Coquitlam Metro-Ford Female Player of the Week

GRAND RE-OPENING
Borysenko key in Reds win
COQUITLAM
Although two teams showed up, the score would suggest otherwise. Coquitlam’s u-18 Synergy made easy work of the Douglas Park Rangers Jan. 23, dismantling the Vancouver-based side by a score of 7-0. Rachel Catania and Kamila Rogic McLean led the offensive parade with two goals apiece, with Kaitlin Ahonen, Kayla Mobilio and Melissa Distefano potting singles. Keeper Claire Ayling picked up the clean sheet. •London Klauer most certainly lived up to the name on the front of her sweater last weekend. The u-14 girls Dynamite striker notched the first four-goal game of her career last week, helping the Coquitlam side post a lopsided 6-1 win over Cliff Avenue United. Picking up assists on Klauer’s four tallies were Annelise Denny, Liz Stewart and Andrea Tagliefero, while Amelia Stewart and Samantha Thomson capped off the offence. Backline players Jenny Varley, Sara Goncalves, and Caitlin Liboiron limited most, if not all, of Cliff Avenue’s attacks. Netminders Justyna Pomalecki and Kyla Currie split the goaltending duties in picking up the win. •It took almost 90 minutes for the payoff, but it was well worth the wait. The u-12 Storm broke open a scoreless deadlock in the last

minute of play last week to defeat a feisty Golden Ears Ravens side 1-0. Jayme Dahlman provided the game’s lone marker on her lastminute breakaway, depositing the winner into the top shelf to seal the win. Eryn Straughan earned the shutout in the Coquitlam nets, while defenders Emma Vandermey and Alexandra Arizanovic kept the Golden Ears attackers at bay. • Having already punched their ticket to the Conference Cup finals in March, the u-16 silver boys Dynamo team showed last week the form that got them there. Four different marksmen tallied in Coquitlam’s 4-2 win over Peace Arch, with Kevin Anderson, Domenic Fayad, Luka Cipin and Kyle Weir each doing their part on offence. Coquitlam’s Conference Cup date is set for March 12, when the Dynamo play host to Chilliwack.

Eugene Borysenko held the fort until his reinforcements arrived, and their timing couldn’t have been better. The Port Moody Reds under-18 gold side got timely netminding from Borysenko particularly after falling behind 1-0 after one half, as he turned away a series of shots from the opposing Lander strikers after the second-half whistle. Bolstered by rock-solid defence from the likes of Andrew Pilcher, Matthew Brown, Matthew Wahlroth and Ben Vovko, the offence then took it upon themselves to turn the tide. Reshad Ziauddin levelled the score at one off a nifty give and go from a corner kick, while teammate Shahin Rasulniya notched the winner two minutes later off a seeing-eye cross from Trenton Murphy. Not to be outdone, the midfield corps consisting of Pedrum Mahlooji, Vahid Vafaee, Liam Viippola and Ziauddin earned full marks for controlling the flow of the game’s second half. • A lost opportunity turned into redemption last week for the Port Moody u-13 AC selects. The club dropped last week’s Conference Cup tilt in the gold division, but rolled their collective sleeves up and got back at it with a convincing 5-0 trouncing of New West United. Stefan Kamner led the way with two goals for the home side, while Mustafa Yousef, Matthew Le and Tak Tasaka each netted singles. • Julia Basa’s lone tally wasn’t enough to help overcome the bite of the Semiahmoo Scorpions, as her u-16 Nitro gold side dropped a 3-1 decision to the Surrey-based squad. Turning in strong efforts were Mercedes Hamilton and Alecia Tingling.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: You have to recognize a basic truth: between now and October 2012, all your efforts to advance in the world (via career, marriage, business, carving out the land, etc.) will be either helped or opposed by another (or others). You will have to form a partnership of interests – your ambition, their security. Be warned: this/these others are hard-headed, skeptical, want proof, not sweet persuasion. So, give proof – of your loyalty, reliability, skills. Sunday/Monday point this out. If you meet a barrier, re-read this. By Saturday, the “right path” appears. Social joys midweek! Taurus April 20-May 20: Love, law, learning and travel – all are a little rocky Sunday/Monday. Be patient – solutions arrive in a small way Monday eve through Tuesday morning, and in a big way Friday/ Saturday. What does the solution look like? Ambition and hard work. Higher-ups, bosses and parents, judges and VIPs are impatient and temperamental to late February, so tread lightly, show good humour, don’t be querulous (especially Friday morning!). Your ambitions can be very successful this week, especially Tuesday eve onward, if you’re eager. Good friends, flirts and social delights arrive late week! Gemini May 21-June 20: Take care with investments, debt, sexual urges, deep health, surgery, commitments and “secrets” Sunday/Monday. If you must handle something in these zones, do so Monday eve through Tuesday morning. Avoid a legal fight all month; but if you’re in one, it intensifies mid-January to late February. Despite the trauma, litigation might solve a problem and make a wish come true! Stability, hope and anger are your allies. The same period might bring gentle love with a hotheaded, idealistic person – intimacy moves toward destiny. Tuesday to Friday emphasizes these themes. Grab opportunities.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Sunday/Monday highlight the problem (2010-2012) in a crucial relationship. You see another in terms of security, but they might see you as “fighting” their ambition. You’ll see clues to solving it Saturday. The solution has something to do with understanding, affection, and with secrets/ research, finances, sexual yearnings, commitment, intuition and dreams. Those secrets, finances, sexuality, et al, are emphasized midweek – they’re a source of ambition, success. If you can’t solve the relationship problem, you might “thoroughly” end the bond, now or later. Decide what’s best. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Chores and health issues arise Sunday/Monday – with problems attached. Solutions to these problems occur Friday/Saturday – the answer might lie deeper, in diagnosis, even surgery. (Metaphorically, too – i.e., cutting out a wasteful or “work-causing” situation.) Relationships confront you mid-week: exciting meetings, challenges and opportunities. You could meet your match in love! That’s important now, as January to June luckily support weddings, love (and far travel, legal solutions, publishing and intellectual pursuits). Depths, secrets, intimacy and funding go well Friday/ Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Romance could hit a snag Sunday/Monday – it probably involves money or possessions – or difficulty “possessing” someone. For you, now to late 2012, romance and sensuality are firmly fused – study whether this will be a problem or a blessing. Creativity and speculation could face the same two-year snag, so be cautious with risk. Chores and health – the main themes of these few weeks – become important midweek. A new work project could begin. Work and health are tied strongly – and mostly beneficially – to finances, investments, research and sex. These four are lucky now to June.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: I’ve mentioned several times over recent years, and will this whole decade, that domestic, property and security changes loom. These are emphasized this year and next, and might, during this time, present a) a puzzle to you, or b) a deeply experienced opportunity. This Sunday/Monday holds a problem or critical choice here – one that moves smoothly forward Tuesday, and meets a solution late week. (The solution involves work or health.) Now to June, relocation, new partnerships are lucky. Romance, creativity and risk lure you midweek, and could be the doorway to new partnership! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You will generally say what you mean Sunday eve – but this day and Monday can raise a barrier to communication that has been around for a year and will last to late next year. It could simply be that communications become burdensome (e.g., more emails – or IT glitches at your job) or, that gossip is a problem factor. You can set up or initiate a long-lasting communications solution Friday/Saturday, one that enhances both your career and security. Home, family, property concerns – February’s main focus – flow well late Tuesday to Thursday. Romance, pleasure, beauty late week! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Both a money opening/opportunity and a money barrier arise Sunday/Monday. This “duo” exist now into October 2012 (and have, for awhile). During the entire phase, take care with expenses, spending, investing. The problem factor seems to involve wishes, or popularity or enjoyment – too much of these for your bank account, maybe? Mild money luck enters Thursday, for a month, and a solution to past and present money dilemmas is available late week. Casual friends, siblings, communications, errands, paperwork, curiosity fill midweek. They “are” the money solution, here forward.

Jan. 30 - Feb. 5 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly Sunday to Tuesday midday – get out, ask favours, start important projects. If your project is monetary (or sensual) continue it through Thursday, as many “good starts” are available! Even Friday/Saturday continue to help – especially with money attached to career, property, and/or personal skills. Mid-January through February brings: a) the end of a money source, and/or b) the seeding of a new one, or c) money connected to property. Much can flow to you – don’t let it flow past/ away – save! Friends, errands, late week. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18: Rest, lie low, contemplate Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. You might spy a problem with communications, travel, intellectual, cultural or legal affairs Sunday/Monday. Keep the faith, because the rest of this week, especially Wednesday and Saturday, could brew the solution. (The solution lies in your own personality, your willingness to step forward and say, “This is me! And this is what I can do!” And that tendency, self-promotion, is highest and most successful this midweek, Tuesday-Thursday, and this month, February.) Chase money or spend (used items great) Friday/Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your optimism and social desires rise Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. But you’re in an overall “recuperation mode” until Feb. 18, so don’t expect a lot. Be contemplative, restful, and gently private all week – especially Tuesday to Thursday, when weariness increases. (Great government, spiritual and health links midweek also.) You might notice a long-term problem (to October 2012) Monday, involving intimacy, sexuality, commitment, or focusing on your net worth, investments, debt. These dilemmas approach solutions Wednesday night and Saturday – or at least, show you how to “be safe.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
