Pesticide opponents try again

Coquitlam OKs new street lights The City of Coquitlam is looking to overhaul its inventory of streetlights with newer, more efficient technologies, but one councillor says the new lights raise safety concerns. With the exception of Coun. Lou Sekora, council voted to replace close to 3,000 streetlights across the city, begin a small pilot project with light emitting diode (LED) lights and consult with developers around how to best phase in LED technology in future neighbourhoods. Referred to as adaptive street lighting technology, the 2,800 lights are expected to lower the illumination of the high-pressure sodium bulbs currently in use and drop energy consumption rates by 25 per cent. Replacing those lights is estimated to cost about $228,000, though the energy savings realized through the new technology are expected to earn that money back in less than five years. “I think that’s an incredibly short payback for the investment we’re putting in and it makes a lot of sense for us to do it,” Mayor Richard Stewart said at Monday’s council meeting. Retrofitting those same lights with LED technology would have cost the city more than $2.2 million, taking 25 years to earn back in energy savings. Going the route of adaptive street lighting also provides the city with some leverage in applying for grant money, as funds are made available for those retrofits via BC Hydro and the Ministry of Environment. According to a staff report, neither agency offers those same opportunities for LED lights. The city installed 10 of both kinds of  CONT. ON PAGE 6, see SEKORA.

Armed with more research, more political experience and more than 400 signatures on a petition, Coquitlam Coun. Selina Robinson is looking to reignite the debate around cosmetic pesticides. Robinson introduced a notice of motion Monday that would ban the use of cosmetic pesticides to kill weeds, insects or other pests, as well as other chemicals used solely for esthetic purposes. Her motion goes on to suggest that the city’s newly established sustainability and environmental advisory committee hammer out the details behind any future bylaw. “Thirty-four municipalities in our province have already gone down this road,” Robinson said Thursday. “This is a perfect opportunity for [the committee] to take a look at what’s out there, who’s had the best success and what they have done.” Monday’s motion comes almost 18 months after Robinson’s attempt to hold a public meeting to gauge community sentiment on the matter, a move that was voted down by council. The issue eventually turned into a letter being sent to Ottawa requesting the federal government “ban all pesticides and other chemicals deemed to be unsafe by federal government scientists.” “I was shocked. I was absolutely stunned,” Robinson said of the failed 2009 motion. “I thought I was testing the waters just to get a gauge, but the fact that a community dialogue didn’t pass … it was unbelievable.” Robinson’s motion notes that on top of the 34 bans in B.C., 171 municipalities across the country have also phased out the use of cosmetic pesticides, including Port Moody. “A lot of the Metro Vancouver municipalities have already taken that step, so I think that Coquitlam should be in step with them,” said Coun. Barrie Lynch, who seconded Robinson’s motion and serves as vice-chair of the environment committee. “There are much more environmentally sensitive ways of dealing with those issues now, so it’s not like we’re saying you can’t take care of your yard.” Research from the Canadian Cancer Society links the use of pesticides to various forms of cancer, including childhood and adult leukemia, childhood brain cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, neuroblastoma, brain cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and some lung cancers. On top of citing that research, Robinson is also using a petition campaign with more than 400 signatures to back her case. That campaign was headed up by Coquitlam’s Maggie Moss and a handful of  CONTINUED ON PAGE 6, see VOTE SET FOR MARCH 7.

Movie inspires people who stutter PoCo woman rooting for The King’s Speech for its realistic portrayal of the disorder Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com

K

ate Semyonova’s Oscar picks were easy to make this year. She can relate well to Colin Firth’s portrayal of the stuttering King George VI in The King’s Speech, a true-story film nominated for 12 Academy Awards. Now 21, Semyonova began stuttering when she was four years old and living in Russia with her family. “I spoke Russian at the time, and it was even worse in Russian. I look back at the family videos now and it’s crazy. I don’t even remember it, but there was definitely a stutter there,” said the Port Coquitlam woman. “In Russian, there’s so many consonants. It’s a hard language.” After moving to Canada at 10, she started to stutter in English as well. “I hid it really well throughout my days in middle school. High school was obviously very stressful because of it. But I hid it because I have this tendency, which is common among stutterers, to switch words,” Semyonova said. “It’s a specific word-replacement strategy where if you feel like you’re going to stutter on a word that you always do — you know which words are going to be difficult — you just change the word. So I got really skilled with that.” Semyonova’s speech is now smooth, thanks to ongoing daily language exercises. She learned the techniques at an intensive stuttering treatment clinic offered through Columbia Speech and Language Services in Vancouver. “I did the treatment twice, actually. The first time I wasn’t too serious about it … It works really well, but it faded really quickly because I stopped doing all the exercises that you have to keep up with every day,” she said. “The second time I did it, I was much older. That was two years ago now, and I am much more serious about keeping up with all the techniques they teach.” The treatment is based on the notion that people don’t stutter when they sing, Semyonova said. “You basically have to slow down your syllables to such a slow rate. You have to practise talking at your rate, which sounds like singing, and all of your syllables are connected,” said Semyonova, a music student at UBC. “You can’t possibly stutter when

Kate Semyonova does daily exercises to prevent her from stuttering. you’re doing that. So then you just speed up your rate and it sticks.” She continues to practise the technique of speaking one syllable per second for 20 minutes each morning and night. If she misses a day, she notices a difference in her confidence, which in turn affects her speech. “It’s so psychological that if I’m not confident about how I’m saying it, then I’ll stutter,” she said. “But in Russian, it’s actually still pretty bad because I don’t do my exercises in Russian. It doesn’t apply to other languages if you just practise in one language.” Semyonova said she’d recommend

the intensive treatment to anyone with a stutter. “It changes the way you think. It slows down your thinking and makes you concentrate on how you’re saying the words. It’s kind of like a multitasking that you have to do in your brain. It depends on the person, but if they’re willing to retrain the way that they think, then it’s definitely one of the most effective things.” Wendy Duke, founder and director of Columbia Speech and Language Services, said Semyonova’s success is directly related to her dedication. “Kate works very hard and continues to do maintenance exercises

every day of her life,” said Duke, who established the clinic in 1987. “You don’t just take a course and get cured. You take a course and you learn what you need to do to keep it under control.” The intensive treatment program costs $4,200, but full funding is available for 10 people per year through the provincial Fred Gingell stuttering treatment grant. These grants are offered on a first-come, first-served basis beginning each April 1. Although the cause of stuttering is not definitively known, Duke said some people may be born with a neurological predisposition related to brain differences. Most common is developmental stuttering, which begins between age two and four when kids are starting to form sentences — as was the case with Semyonova. Most people, however, grow out of this phase. Neurogenic stuttering is the next most common form, arising from neurological issues like a brain injury or stroke, Duke said. The least common occurrence is psychogenic, which is usually associated with a psychological or psychiatric condition. About one per cent of the worldwide population stutters, Duke said, although around five per cent will experience stuttering at some point in their lives. “It’s incredibly stressful,” said the speech and language pathologist. “For many of my clients, it permeates everything they do. It’s a background upon which they play their lives out.” Like Semyonova, Duke agrees that Colin Firth should walk away with the Oscar for his performance in The King’s Speech. “It was just absolutely realistic. It was just like having a client in the room with me. He did such a good job. Usually people who portray stutterers, they do such a simplistic job of it,” Duke said. “Colin Firth, he got all the little nuances, all the little pauses in conversation where you can tell he was about to stutter but he switched words, which is something that clients do all the time. All the thoughtfulness behind his speaking, you could see it in his face — all his planning what he’s going to say and the stuff behind the message. He did a great job.” • For more information about Columbia Speech and Language Services, call 604-875-9100 or visit www.columbiaspeech.com.

The latest instalment in the longstanding issue over fears of developing a golf course in north Coquitlam ended in deferral Monday night. Coun. Lou Sekora’s notice of motion to ask Metro Vancouver to change the regional designation of the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club was deferred until after a meeting with area residents takes place early next month. Sekora sought to change the golf course’s designation from general urban to conservation and recreation in Metro Vancouver’s yet-tobe-completed regional growth strategy. Council will hold a meeting for members of the Westwood Plateau community to discuss concerns over the regional

Alleged mail thief nabbed by RCMP A 41-year-old man has been arrested after a month-long investigation into an alleged prolific offender. Coquitlam RCMP seized a vehicle on Jan. 13 that was found to contain stolen mail. In a news release, police say they began investigating 41-yearold Raymond Calkin, and arrested him on Tuesday, Feb. 15 after he allegedly stole several pieces of mail. During a search of his vehicle, police allege they found stolen mail, break-in instruments and methamphetamine. Calkin has been charged with eight counts, and has been remanded until his next court appearance March 2. RCMP say once the police investigation is complete, the mail will be returned to Canada Post for delivery with a customer service letter attached.

The family is inviting Reaveley’s friends to attend. Reaveley was well-known in the community for being a fitness instructor at several recreation facilities in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. The Port Coquitlam woman was one of two killed last week during an alleged hitand-run crash. Reaveley and her husband, Dan, stopped to help 26-

A man from the B.C. Interior is in custody after police managed to foil an armed robbery last Thursday. A suspect walked into D-Video just after 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 and produced a knife, according to police. He made off with $592 and a cellphone. Coquitlam RCMP’s prolific target team was nearby when they received the dispatch, and were able to locate the suspect and stolen goods. “Robberies are dangerous crimes and can easily turn violent,” said the team’s Cpl. Scott Grimmer. “So anytime we can arrest a robbery suspect this quickly without anyone getting hurt and recover everything that was stolen, it is a very good story for us.” Michael Clifford Collins, 29, was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Salmon Arm. He has been charged with robbery and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

lights late last year as part of its evaluation of the two technologies, and eight of the 25 responses from the public indicated a noticeable reduction in illumination from the adaptive street lighting technology. That led Sekora to vote against the move out of safety concerns for the visually impaired, cyclists and pedestrians. “I think that we need to make sure that the lights are not dimmed so much at night to where it’s a problem,” he said. Sekora also took issue with the notion of setting up an LED pilot project for 30 homes to evaluate how the technology performs over time. “What does that really prove? Not much,” he said. “Right now we’re still going through rough times … I think we need to be very, very careful how we spend the taxpayers’ money.” As for the third element of the plan, the city hopes developers will foot the bill for replacing old lights with LED lights as each new development is built. “That will mean that the taxpayers won’t have to fund, for the next 50 years, an inefficient technology,” Stewart said in an interview Tuesday. “The new neighbourhoods will be able to benefit from the technology paid for by the development industry as they put the houses in.”

other concerned residents. The group got together under the banner of the Coquitlam Pesticide Awareness Coalition, and garnered the 400-plus signatures in less than a year. “[Public reaction] has been completely positive to our efforts,” Moss said Thursday. “I think most people realize that we don’t really need to put those products on our lawns just for beautification purposes.” Despite supporting the intent of Robinson’s motion, Mayor Richard Stewart said he disagrees with local politicians doing the job of a more senior level of government. He also added that the move should have first gone to the sustainability and environment committee for review before being brought to council for a vote. “We’ve made the decision in

reverse — we’ve put the decisions before us to ban it first and then decide what we’re banning,” he said. “I don’t use [cosmetic pesticides] myself; I wish people didn’t use them. I wish we could ban their sales, but if we can’t ban their sale, there’s not much point in pretending to ban their use. We’re only pretending.” Robinson’s motion will be put to a vote at the March 7 council meeting.

Opinion

Library spending not justified Re: “Coquitlam OKs new City Centre library,” Friday, Feb. 18. You recently reported that Coquitlam proposes to spend $15 million on a new library in the Town Centre area, $9 million of which is to be borrowed. It has also been reported that the librarian said that increasingly, people are coming not to borrow books but rather to bring their laptop computers to work with. To The Two factors make this decision, which is bound to have a tax impact for Coquitlam residents, questionable: 1. The increasing use of the Internet and devices such as the Kindle and IPad and the linking of mobile and computer technology is making the future of books look increasingly less important. It looks like in the not-too-distant future, libraries will become almost exclusively repositories of rare and

historic documents. 2. Who are the people hanging out with their laptops? Douglas College students? Should taxpayers be providing facilities for students and others to set up their desks and “hang out” in a Wi-Fi environment? It seems that this decision has been taken with no taxpayer information and opportunity for input about the longterm viability of this investment and further, who the investment should be Editor serving. Council must consider these questions before making such a major commitment of taxpayer money. Presumably, the funds being used to repay the loan could be used for other purposes that would otherwise be paid for by taxpayers. B. Cole Coquitlam

nternational Co-operation Minister Bev Oda must not resign. Whoops! Sorry, we have no idea how that snuck into print. Actually, it was an intern’s fault. OK, OK, it was us. Bev Oda must resign. Joking aside, this is a serious matter. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is entirely correct when he says ministers have every right to overrule the advice of their civil servants. What they cannot do, however, is lie about what that advice was. Not only did Oda falsify the written funding recommendation given to her by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) concerning aid group Kairos, she then barefacedly denied doing it in front of a House of Commons committee. Maxime Bernier had to resign for being a bit absent-minded. Surely two instances of willful deception must carry at least the same penalty. This affair also parallels the fiasco last summer when Industry Minister Tony Clement claimed that Statistics Canada was entirely supportive of doing away with the mandatory long-form census. Munir Sheik, the head of StatsCan, resigned the day after Clement told that porky pie. Elected officials and unelected bureaucrats aren’t always going to agree. That’s fine — they’re not supposed to. Answering to the public gives ministers a different perspective from anonymous staffers. But it’s shamefully dishonest for a public figure to dress up a purely political decision with fabricated “expert advice.” Oda and Clement should have had the courage — and the honesty — to say they were making their decision in spite, not because, of what the bureaucrats were telling them. New poll results show the 12.5-per-cent lead the Conservatives held over the Liberals as little as two weeks ago is now just five per cent. It’s impossible to say what role Oda’s scandal may have played in this change, but we’re betting there’s at least a few in her own party who hope she resigns.

Timorous at first, her voice grew to a glorious finish — rivalled only by the loud uproarious cacophony of applause from a supportive audience and the other acts waiting backstage. During a time when the focus on my generation is about things like bullying, I have never felt more proud to be a teenager than I did at that moment. So sometimes it takes a little trial and error to produce a great final result. And it also showed me that even the toughest teenager still wants to see one of his kind succeed. Bringing back photo radar could help reduce fatal crashes Re: “Changes could help prevent other tragic roadside deaths,” letter to the editor, Wednesday, Feb. 23. There are other, more effective ways that the provincial government could reduce motor vehicle fatalities. First, it could reinstate the fleet of photo radar vans that were very effective at reducing speeding. The risk of death increases with speed. Next, the province could require earlier use of breath test-ignition interlocks to reduce impaired driving. ICBC might offer an insurance reduction incentive to any driver who voluntarily installed this sobriety check. Finally, new Wi-Fi technology is in development to enforce speed limits. A vehicle could soon be equipped with a speed limiter that receives advice of the local speed limit from a low-power Wi-Fi transmitter at strategic locations on the roadside. Once again, ICBC might offer an insurance reduction inducement to any driver who voluntarily installed this speed limiter. Compulsive speeders might be compelled to drive with a speed limiter-equipped vehicle. D. B. Wilson Port Moody

it meant to hurt any creature. The purpose was to separate the dogs, and it was successful. As the owner caught up with his dogs, he was clearly upset that his dog had been kicked. Both dogs appeared OK, but we were all shaken. The whole situation could have been avoided had the dogs been leashed by their owner. I have told this story to help people realize what can happen when dog owners hold their loved ones’ leashes in their hands while letting their dogs play. Editor PoCo has a new offleash park; please use it. No one wants to see animals hurt. The dog owner ended up threatening my friend. It was a terrible scene with emotions flying and it did nothing for the community I love. Interestingly, I’m not angry at the whole exchange, I’m sad. We were just looking for a peaceful, stress-reducing walk in the woods. Leslie Hopkins Port Coquitlam

I am an animal lover. When I walk my dog, he is leashed and under my control at all times, as any dog should be. I clean up after my dog, and even others’ dogs, just to keep the trails pleasant for all. When I come across other dogs and their owners, nine times out of 10 owners who choose to let their dogs have a little off-leash time leash them when they see a leashed pet approachTo The ing. Recently, my friend, my dog and I were walking on one of PoCo’s beautiful trails. Two unleashed dogs came at the three of us. Although they were smaller dogs, animals charging, showing their teeth, I was on guard for those I love, human and dog alike. One dog bit mine, and continued to bite repeatedly at his midsection, with mine trying to free himself. one’s garage for at least two weeks at a time. In all the years my husband and I have lived here, last year was the first one that we’ve seen rats roaming the neighbourhood. If the mayor and council really wanted to promote more recycling, they should have increased recycling pickup to every week, not taken away our garbage pickups. By the time two weeks roll around my recycling is so jammed full that I have been, unfortunately, having to throw recycling into the garbage can. Having garbage collecting in people’s garages for so long is just making our city much more attractive to bears and rodents. Perhaps when election time comes we can elect people who have more common sense and who will fix this stinky problem, or at least get more public input prior to making such decisions that affect us all to such an extent. Sarah Kelly Port Coquitlam ••• I and my neighbours also fully support the letters of others calling for the return of weekly garbage pickup. Last summer, we were infested with rats, mice, worms and so on. This is an unhealthy factor, and I resent this mayor telling the residents of PoCo that we save money when the utility bill is up $30. Blending classic with contemporary, pianist Kevin Wong will head up a fundraiser in PoCo Saturday night. Slated for 7 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Anglican/Trinity United Church, the show will feature Wong performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart and Rossini, on top of tackling more recent tunes from Fantasia 2000, V for Vendetta and Tom and Jerry. Admission is by a suggested donation of $15, and all proceeds will go towards St. Catherine’s ministry and its music programs.

Dubbed Music of the World on the Sitar, the show will feature sitarist and Place des Arts teacher James Hamilton performing alongside Navaro Franco on percussion and Sarabjit (Sunny) Matharu on tabla. The three performers represent musical backgrounds that draw inspiration from Ireland, India, Greece and South Africa, and the trio has more than 50 years of musical experience between them. Scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the show costs $13.50 plus HST for adults and $11 plus HST for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Place des Arts, located at 1120 Brunette Ave., or by calling 604-664-1636.

I

t kicks off with the kids on Friday, then comes full circle two days later with a performance by a bona fide jazz legend. The Water’s Edge Festival gets underway today (Friday), and will offer up a bit of the old, and a lot of the new over its three-day stay at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. Now in its third go-round in Coquitlam, the festival has moved away from featuring music exclusively to include other elements of artistic expression such as the visual arts, dance and drama. “What’s really innovative and unique about our festival is that festival goers become participants — they get to experience and engage in the arts and they’re not just observers,” said Diana Clark, the festival’s lead organizer. A partnership between the Coastal Sound Music Academy, ArtsConnect and Evergreen, the festival

starts Friday morning with a children’s choir workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that will be headed up by award-winning conductor and educator Carrie Tennant. Intended for students in grades 3 through 8, the workshop will feature tricks of the trade in choral music, drama or visual arts. A 7 p.m. choir performance, followed by the ever-popular communal drum circle at 8 p.m., will cap off the day. Saturday branches out into all kinds of different directions, with a mixed bag of workshops covering off on weaving, painting and dance: Gay Mitchell will help students through the ins and outs of collage work; Nichola Basara and Christina Martino will prop up the tenets of hip-hop, jazz, contemporary and street dance styles; Wendy Anderson will lead participants down the path of a woven public art project and Arabel Luk will explore the world of Chinese painting with traditional brushes, paper and coloured inks. Saturday also represents the return of one of last year’s festival mainstays, the Great Canadian Guitar Jam. Led by School District 43 teachers Malcolm

Grier and Andrew Clark, the two-plus hour group guitar hug will see participants performing more than 20 Canadian songs together. “A lot of them are songs that we’ve discovered and that we like to play,” Grier said. “Every year we find a couple of new tunes that become gems for us that we want to jump on. The hardest part for us is narrowing it down to 24 or 25 songs because there are so many great songs out there.” Open to all levels and playing abilities, the guitar jam will consist of songs like “Wheat Kings” by the Tragically Hip, Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” and “Patio Lanterns” by Kim Mitchell. “The cool thing is that we’re all spending a lot of time in our basements playing guitar, and we all have a connection that way,” Andrew Clark said. “This gives us an opportunity to get out and play with some other people, and that’s what it’s all about because music is a social thing too.” Saturday night will be capped off with Ballet  CONT. Kelowna’s main stage performance at 8 p.m. Dubbed “Actions Consequences,” the show will be the premiere of a newly commissioned ballet by Canadian choreographer Gioconda Barbuto set to the music of Montreal-based composer Michael Oesterle. Day 3 of the festival starts with renowned jazz singer Dee Daniels leading a workshop on the fundamentals of gospel singing at 10:30 a.m. She’ll take to the stage at 2 p.m. for a performance of jazz, blues and gospel music. “To hear a jazz diva like Dee Daniels in an intimate setting like the Evergreen Theatre is going to be unbelievable,” Clark said. “She’s got an incomparable voice, but she’s a great storyteller and she has a way of engaging every person in the room.” A collaborative group art show — called Those Who Can, Teach! — featuring the works

of 39 teachers from School District 43 gets underway at 4 p.m., before PechaKuchaNight Coquitlam marks its return to Evergreen at 7 p.m. Based on the premise of showing 20 images in 20 seconds, the Japanese-based art form is meant to stimulate conversation while exploring ideas through a uniquely different artistic lens. “What his event does is it helps discover talent in our community, some of which we didn’t know about before,” said Helen Daniels, executive director of ArtsConnect. “The artists generally have ways to show their art in galleries, but what about some of the other creative types of expression? It’s very much about people sharing their creativity, their passion and their story.” For more information about performance times and ticket prices, see www.watersedgemusic.ca.

MOTORING

A generation older and wiser David Chao editorial@thenownews.com It’s been six years since the third-generation Audi A6 arrived on the scene, and a lot has changed since then — both with the A6 and its competition. Once the fresh face in the crowd, the A6 is now one of the longest-lived cars in its class, and that’s how things will stay until the new 2012 version arrives next year. But the thing is, there’s really nothing wrong with that; in fact, there’s quite a lot that’s right about the current A6. While the 5-Series and E-Class were redesigned this past year, Audi has continued to tweak and improve upon a vehicle that works very well. Moreover, while its design may not deliver the excitement of some newer models, the A6 still has a lot of style going for it. So, this car isn’t out of date by any means. It’s just perceived as being out of date — and that’s a huge mistake. While Audi has worked hard to escape from the giant shadows cast by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, it still doesn’t have the brand power of its German rivals. You don’t buy an Audi to get the flashiest vehicle or the best-handling sedan on the road — you buy it for its amazing design, value, and, above all else, balance. And if that’s the case, the six-year-old A6 remains an excellent choice. Whether you’re looking at the sedan or the Avant wagon, the A6 offers a high-quality, feature-laden package that won’t disappoint. In preparing for the 2012 version, Audi has reduced the A6 lineup to three very well-equipped models: two for the sedan (depending on the engine choice), and one for the Avant. The good news

is that Audi has loaded them with practically everything, saving only a few high-end features and a single option package for the V-8 model. The bad news is that frontwheel drive has disappeared, pushing the starting price into the mid-$60,000 range. That puts the A6 right up against the E-Class (which now has standard all-wheel drive), while a rear-wheeldrive 5-Series sells for $10,000 less. As good as the A6 is, that gap might be too much in the court of public opinion. The A6’s styling begins with the trapezoidal front fascia, which was heavily debated when it first replaced the slim, rectangular grilles of past Audis. It turned out to be a great move for Audi, creating a distinctive look and feel for the automaker. With logical proportions and good posture, the A6 sedan has “practical” written all over it. That’s even more the case with the Avant, a true wagon body style with a tall roof and a long rear end. Get inside the A6 and you’ll find a cabin that’s simple, but not at all boring. Audi really does some of the best interiors in the business, creating cars that are welcoming, comfortable, and logical, and the A6 has held up very well in this regard. With many years of production under its belt, all the kinks have been worked out of the A6. As a result, you can expect excellent build quality and a solid feel to the car. Available engines include a supercharged three-litre V-6 with 300-hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and a 4.2-litre V-8 with 350-hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Both are attached to a six-speed automatic and Audi’s fantastic quattro allwheel-drive system. The V-6 is an excellent engine that’s more than suf-

ficient for the A6’s purposes— especially considering that the V-8 gives up fuel efficiency while barely improving on the sedan’s acceleration. Handling is a strong point of the A6. It’s not the best car to drive by any means, but remains responsive and predictable. Perhaps the only knock is the slightly artificial feeling of Audi steering systems, which may or may not suit your preferences. Ride quality is similarly good, striking a fine balance between the hard 5-Series and softer E-Class. Of course, hard and soft are relative terms for cars that are far more poised and comfortable than your average family sedan. Thanks to its upright cabin and long body, the A6 provides lots of interior space and can easily fit four adults. Some might find the front seats a bit flat and firm in the German tradition, but all will  CONT. ON PAGE 14, see CONTROLS.

appreciate the tremendous amount of space. Both the sedan and the Avant are great when it comes to cargo space, offering a large cargo area and a 60/40 splitfolding rear seat to accept longer items. In-cabin storage is also plentiful, thanks to the large glove box, map pockets, and other decently sized bins. Controls are thoughtful and easy to reach, and the scrolling thumb switches on the steering wheel are particularly nice for operating the LCD trip computer mounted in the gauge cluster. The A6 also benefits from a touchscreen mounted on the dash. While the V8 isn’t compelling on its own, it adds some interesting equipment such as adaptive headlamps and a blind-spot detection system. It’s unfortunate that these great features aren’t available with the better V6 powertrain. The A6 sells for $64,200 with the three-litre V-6, while the 4.2-litre V-8 goes for $75,900. A6 Avants are only available with the V-6 for $68,200. Standard features include ABS, traction control, electronic stability control, cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning, heated front and rear seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, power-tilt/telescope steering, keyless start, rearview camera, Xenon headlamps, sunroof, GPS navigation, Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers and front/ side/side-curtain airbags. The 4.2-litre V-8 trim adds adaptive headlights, blind-spot detection, power rear and manual side sunshades, ninespeaker Bose surround sound system and the option of a technology plus package with lane assist, steering-mounted shift panels, and adaptive cruise control. Audi gets a thumbs up for classic styling, generally practical design and spacious interior. The high starting price and unnecessary V-8 engine gets a thumbs down. The bottom line is Audi’s A6 is a sensible alternative in the luxury car market.

READERS CHOICE 2010

Thank You for Voting us the #1 Choice

Publishers Message Brad Alden, The NOW Welcome to the Annual Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s one of the highlights of the year at The NOW and as you may recall, we published ballots and offered a $500 shopping spree at the Coquitlam Centre as an incentive for you, our loyal readers, to cast your votes for The Best in the TriCities in 92 business categories.

Book an nt e appointm

While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation does lend credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify the ballots. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 25 votes, only one ballot per person and only original ballots were accepted. All other entries were disqualified.

I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the businesses who received this year’s Readers’ Choice awards. They are most deserving of our recognition as The Best in the Tri-Cities. But don’t just take our word for it; visit as many of the winning businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. The NOW would like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Coquitlam Centre Shopping Spree, Anita McDonnell of Port Moody. We want to thank all of you who participated and entered this year’s contest. We look forward to counting your votes next year.

The Golden Boot Caffé, located at the corner of Ridgeway and Nelson in Coquitlam, has been in existence since August 1997. From the very beginning, owner-chef David Azzi has emphasized that he was not in competition with fast-food outlets, nor with restaurants that placed more importance on quantity than quality. For that reason the food served at the Golden Boot Caffé, whether it be the pasta, the sauces, or the desserts, is homemade. David Azzi acquired his penchant for Italian cooking from his three Italian aunts, Tina Brunoro, Nia Galassini, and Lea Bortoluzzi. All three are exceptional cooks and, through example, provided David with the desire to emulate them. Another aunt, Anna Azzi, was a professional chef at a resort hotel in Tuscany, Italy. David’s mother, Gloria Azzi, also has a keen interest in cooking. As a child, David would watch, and later assist, his mother in making pasta and various sauces. As a young man, David spent a year in Modena, Italy where he befriended a chef by the name of Bollo. When Bollo opened his first restaurant, David spent endless hours training under his direction and learning how to apply home cooking to a restaurant setting. Later, David and his cousin Roano Azzi opened the A-Wear Caffé in downtown Vancouver. The owner of A-Wear, Alberto Leone, provided this opportunity. Here David was able to use the skills that he had accumulated over the years. With this experience he decided to open his own restaurant in his hometown of Coquitlam. Thus the Golden Boot Caffé was formed.

Looking for flavour and aroma? Try a blended varietal Cabernet Franc, together with the traditional grape of Tuscany, the Sangiovese vine. However, Europe and B.C. are not the only regions blending premium wines. Chileans are blending their native grape, Carmenere, with Cabernet Sauvignon to great success, and Australia has had excellent results in mixing Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are just some examples of blended wines creating a

new buzz for consumers. Wine drinkers are finding out that some of the best wines being released are not made from one grape, but a skilled blend of many grapes that results in a more complex wine delivering pleasurable aromas and flavours.

t seems the upcoming trends are really the established tendencies that have worked well in the past. One of the newest directions in the wine industry is the emergence of highquality blended wines. Shiraz and Malbec have had their day in the sun, and now blended varietals are becoming hot. Winemakers blend wines for increased complexity, flavour and texture. They can also adjust levels of tannin, sweetness or acidity by using the right varietals in the correct proportions. One of the biggest misconceptions is that blended wines are cheap and lacking in quality. This is not true; it just depends on the quality of the raw ingredients used in the final wine and the blending skills of the winemaker. Bordeaux wines from France have always been blended and they are the most sought after wines in the world — fetching thousands of dollars for the best bottles, which are designated first growths. Bordeaux wines Wine Sense are blended with up to five different grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, John Gerum Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Outside of Bordeaux, the same blend is used to produce a wine sometimes named Meritage. In B.C., this style of wine is showing great promise. These high-quality red wines are handcrafted at such wineries as Laughing Stock, Burrowing Owl, Church and State, Herder Vineyards and Road 13. Other regions of the world are also known as makers of quality blended wines. The Champagne region blends up to three different types of varietals to produce one of the top sparkling wines on the planet. Believe it or not, two of these grapes are red; Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are crushed, releasing only white juice that is fermented into the base of champagne. The only white grape used is Chardonnay. Super Tuscan wines of Italy, and Italian wines in general, are blended using the thousands of years of experience gained by generations of winemakers. They have used these skills to craft masterpiece wines highly sought after around the world. Super Tuscan wines can fetch hundreds of dollars a bottle, but there are some excellent wines that are priced from about $22 here in B.C. The interesting fact about super Tuscan wines is that they use grapes that were not traditionally used in Italy before the 1970s. These include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and

Vegetable gardeners rejoice — it’s time to start planting

BUSY BIRD: Coquitlam resident Ina Winterburn shot this photo of a pileated woodpecker at Bert Flinn Park in Port Moody. Winterburn saw two woodpeckers that day and wrote that, despite their small size, “they could be major contenders in a lumberjack competition. There were wood chips everywhere!”

Skaters strike good balance of practice, fun Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com Precision, practice and timing go a long way to making an elite figure skater. There’s a fourth key ingredient — passion — that holds everything together. Liam Firus and Bela Papp understand the importance of that mix. The two have put in the time, toil and dedication in pursuit of national and international success, and are eager to push it to the next step. That next step starts Monday at the World Junior Figure Skating championships in Korea. The road to elite international competitions has led them through the Coquitlam Skating Club, where intense training alongside Canadian senior men’s skater Ronald Lam has evolved into a competitive and fun atmosphere. “We have a lot of fun on the ice, we push each other,” said Firus, 18. “It’s competitive out there, we’ll see one do a jump and we will want to land the same jump. We love to push each other, it’s highly motivating.” It also turns what can be a couple of gruelling hours each day on the ice into an enjoyable challenge. “They are really fun to hang out with, and they make me skate better,” notes Papp. “They are older than I am but I want to beat them.” For Firus, the 2010 Canadian junior men’s national champion, figure skating was first a means to improve his hockey game, and soon Paul vanPeenen/NOW became his No. 1 passion. As a firstyear student at Capilano University, COOL ON ICE: The Coquitlam Skating Club’s Bela Papp, left, and Liam Firus, right, have benefited from training together as they prepared for sacrifice and time management skills next week’s World Junior Figure Skating championships in Korea. have become essential to ensuring his ice time is productive. Despite dropping a 2-1 decision to Chilliwack this past Sunday, the Under 16 Breakers turned in a solid performance and were very unfortunate not to come away with a better result. One of the Breakers that stood out was midfielder ALYSSA CHRICHTON. She has been a member of the Breakers for many years, and this year could easily be considered one of her best. Alyssa has been one of the team’s most consistent players throughout the season, as she has displayed a great deal of creativity from her left flank position. Alyssa is a driven competitor who wants to succeed but, at the same time, she has a positive personality and manages to encourage her teammates to perform at their highest level. For her impressive performance this past weekend, and throughout the season, ALYSSA CHRICHTON has been chosen Coquitlam Metro-Ford Female Player of the Week.

Rapids add BC berth

Paul vanPeenen/NOW

RIGHT GUARD: Terry Fox Ravens’ Amy Nadasdi, rear, looks to pass around a Fleetwood Park defender during Tuesday’s opening round of the Fraser Valley AAA senior girls championships. The Ravens won 64-42.

Flames’ goalie stymies Panthers

The Ridge Meadows Flames’ Mackenzie Skapski put the brakes to the Port Moody Black Panthers on Wednesday. The 16-year-old netminder stood on his head in lifting the Flames to a 4-1 win in Game 2 of their best-of-seven junior B hockey playoff series by kicking out 55 shots. The only Panthers’ shot to beat him came 15 minutes into the second period, when Ryan Panichelli converted a powerplay chance. The Panthers took the first game 5-3 on Monday, led by Panichelli’s pair and singles by Julian Klaric, Rino Minni and Josh Viegas. The series continues tonight in Maple Ridge, and returns to Port Moody for Game 4 on Saturday (7:45 p.m. at the Port Moody Arena). Game 5 is slated for Monday, 7:30 p.m. in Port Moody.

Correction

The Riverside Rapids continue to be a dominating force on the senior girls basketball circuit. They will ride that tendency right into the B.C. AAA senior girls championships. Riverside, ranked third in recent provincial polls, clinched a berth to next month’s B.C.s by blasting Heritage Park 87-32 on Tuesday. They began the Valleys with a resounding 9344 victory over Fleetwood Park. The back-to-back wins to start the tournament catapulted the Rapids into tonight’s Valley semifinal against No. 2ranked Brookswood, 7:45 p.m. at W.J. Mouat. The other semifinal pits W.J. Mouat against Maple Ridge. In a critical do-or-die match Tuesday, the Terry Fox Ravens flew past Fleetwood Park 65-42. Sparked by Grade 10 Katie Devaney’s 21 points, the Ravens staked out a patient, deliberate approach, leading 29-20 at halftime. Seniors Nichelle White and Amy Nadasdi added 15 and 10 points, respectively to set the tone on offence. The squad were equally as determined on defence, with Grade 11 Jodi Vance anchoring a well-balanced approach. It came on the heels of a rollercoaster 58-46 loss to Heritage Park on Monday. Fox opened that game hungry, bursting out to a 22-7 lead. But Heritage stormed back and took a two-point lead at the half, widening the margin after a close third quarter. Gleneagle, meanwhile topped Walnut Grove 51-21 to stave off elimination on Tuesday, while Centennial dropped a 62-49 decision to Maple Ridge. Gleneagle, Fox and Centennial all faced another must-win situation last night, past The NOW’s deadline. Gleneagle took on Yale, while Fox and Centennial duelled for another chance at a B.C. berth.

The Fraser Valley final is slated for Saturday, 4:30 p.m. at W.J. Mouat.

Fox, Talons host Valley showdowns

The senior boys AAA Fraser Valley championships take to the floor tonight in a preview of March madness. Thirty-two teams square off in eight locations to sift the top-16 for the next round of Valley play, which begins Monday at various locations. Tonight’s action includes the No. 5-ranked Terry Fox Ravens hosting Guildford Park (8 p.m.), while the Gleneagle Talons face Kwantlen Park (8 p.m.). Also at Gleneagle, unranked Port Moody plays W.J. Mouat (6:15 p.m.). For the No. 10-rated Heritage Woods Kodiaks, the first obstacle comes in the presence of Maple Ridge, who they play at Fleetwood Park, while Centennial takes to the floor following that tilt to play the host squad. The Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils battle No. 17 Yale at Enver Creek. For every team, a loss tonight ends the season.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: March – and especially Thursday to Saturday this week – emphasizes gentle love and understanding, legal affairs, far travel, intellectual, cultural and educational matters.Because this is a time of love (and legalities) relationships loom significantly Sunday (unsuccessful, say no) and Monday (successful, say yes). Life’s depths, finances, mutually owned resources, intimacy, research, dreams, sexual urges – any or all glide in midweek through March. All’s smooth here, minor progress is easy. You might start a new travel, legal, publishing, or educational project Thursday onward. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The accent lies, all March, on mysteries, research, detective work, dreams, hidden meanings, and the “unseen” connections between people, intimacy, sexual urges, on finances, investments, settlements, funding, lifestyle changes, health factors and diagnosis. A lot to think about, but let your thinking be intuitive, let your subconscious take over, especially Thursday to Saturday, when these deep things are highlighted.A legal, educational or travel matter might take an unexpected turn. Tackle chores Sunday/Monday. Agreements favoured Tuesday/Wednesday – affectionate meetings loom! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The weeks ahead feature exciting meetings, relationships, relocation possibilities, agreements and arguments, challenges and opportunities – this Thursday to Saturday highlights these, and might trigger a new bond or open a new door. (Yes, step through!) Romance, beauty, pleasure and exciting risk call Sunday (poor results) and Monday (good results). Take a chance, approach someone who attracts you. Tackle chores and health concerns Tuesday/Wednesday – good luck and grace affect this area now to late March. You might be inexplicably excited by someone Thursday – or by an investment.

Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious Sunday/ Monday – but don’t seek co-operation before Sunday eve. Happiness, friends, flirtations and entertainment, hopes and wishes (especially about money and partnership) fill Tuesday/Wednesday – or they would, if you weren’t so tired. But the glimmers of all these are true, and they’ll grow as March progresses. Soon, very soon, an “explosion” of gratifying and intriguing events will occur in this area of friends and hopes. Retreat, rest, contemplate, plan and interact with government, institutions and “head office” – all is smooth, successful. A new plan emerges. Taurus April 20-May 20: These weeks hold happiness – especially this Thursday to Saturday. A dream comes true, friends gather ‘round, optimism fills you, and the horizon lifts to exciting new prospects! (Don’t expect huge popularity before June: the friends you gather will tend to be old faithful ones, especially males.) Wisdom, gentle love, legal affairs, far travel, intellectual and cultural involvements draw you Sunday (caution) and Monday (sweet luck). Get ambitious Tuesday/Wednesday: these days offer a good, productive start to a weeks-long phase that can promote you, or bring praise from higher-ups. Gemini May 21-June 20: Be ambitious these weeks, especially Thursday-Saturday. Higher-ups are impatient, critical – yet they might make a wish come true! Until June, you’re blessed with general good fortune, especially with friends, light romance, and in progressing toward a bright future. This is the time to wish and hope, Gemini! (A wish now gets answered in 16-28 months.) Mysteries, finances, sexual longings arise unluckily Sunday, luckily Monday. Intellectual, legal and travel affairs, gentle love, understanding and cultural involvements flow nicely Tuesday/Wednesday – they’ll be lucky all March.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The emphasis lies on work, health, machinery, “necessity,” and the wellbeing of your dependents, all March, but especially this Thursday to Saturday, when a new project or duty might begin. A “help-mate” relationship might also start – if you want to settle for this rather than wait for or risk chasing a more romantic, passionate link, OK; just be aware – and honest. Focus on home, security Sunday/Monday. Romance, pleasure, speculation and a wee winning streak Tuesday/ Wednesday! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Romance, joy, pleasure, charming children, creative surges and risk-taking urges, sports and games – these fill the weeks ahead, especially this Thursday to Saturday, when a new love (with a co-worker?) creative work or school program could begin. Do errands, communicate, handle paperwork and busy little tasks Sunday (careful, proceed slowly) and Monday (all’s well). Retreat from the bustling crowd Tuesday/ Wednesday – you need a bit of down-home time, nature, gardening, etc. – this area will be filled with sweetness for a few weeks. A love relationship will “get domestic” or end. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your home, children, property, security and business foundations are emphasized over the three weeks ahead, especially this Thursday to Saturday, when a semi-important project could begin in these areas. (Semi-important because it might have an effect on future love/ romance, or aid your “creative space” or – at the very least, it will soak up the energy that’s making you a bit temperamental on the home front.) However, do NOT buy (or move into) a new home now through April 1. (Long-term friction – and obstacles to love – would result.) Money caution Sunday – spend Monday.

Feb. 27 - Mar. 5 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The weeks ahead are not supremely important, so you can hang up the stress hat for awhile. Keep busy, do errands, paperwork, communicate, but just glide. Sunday presents you with the same combination of career obstacles and determination that will be around for almost two more years. Monday offers ambitious success. Money’s featured Tuesday/Wednesday – your luck rises in this area until late March. You can splurge on a luxury or two. Begin communicating about or (lightly) researching property now – you might act soon (late April best for the new, earlier for the old.) Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Chase money, buy/sell, seek new lucrative clients, deal with possessions for the few weeks ahead, especially this Thursday to Saturday, when a new project might begin in these areas. Memory, rote learning and sensual attractions are also favoured. Retreat, rest, contemplate what is permitted and what is not, Sunday/Monday. Applies to the law, ethics, etc. Your energy, charm and effectiveness bounce back late Monday night through Wednesday – start significant projects, seek favours, show yourself off. A subtle grace and attractiveness enters you now to late March. Others will notice! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: You’re the star of the show this month – especially Thursday to Saturday, when your energy, charisma, effectiveness, leadership qualities and decisiveness make you a winner! Don’t waste this time – use it to start important projects, to impress important people, and to tackle problems you’ve found daunting in the past. Your will power is at a two-year height, especially about money-making and possessions.Your sex appeal soars also, all month! Gee, what could go wrong? Well, investments for one, sexual explorations, research, power-plays, collusion, secret actions – avoid these. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
