Teen plans walk for homeless
Farnworth focuses on child poverty

Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth outlined a plan Monday to combat poverty if he’s chosen as the BC NDP’s next leader. To start, Farnworth would appoint a single cabinet minister to implement a family and child poverty reduction strategy. This minister would report directly to the premier’s office and would be responsible for setting and achieving legislated targets. Farnworth would also expand childcare and early learning programs in B.C. Brad West, Farnworth’s deputy campaign manager, said this issue will hit home for many local families. “This is critical. There’s a lot of working families in Port Coquitlam and in the TriCities, and no one has to tell them how difficult it is to find childcare space these days,” West said. “We’ve heard this from many, many parents, and it’s critical to help families break the poverty cycle.” Farnworth’s strategy also aims to reduce homelessness, with targets for social housing units and short-term shelters. West said families need more access to affordable housing instead of relying on rental supplements. “You talk to people who have been in the situation, and they’ll tell you that those supplements get eaten up by increasing rents. So what we’re saying is that the province needs to be involved in building affordable social housing,” West said. “There’s a number of people in Port Coquitlam and in the Tri-Cities who are waiting on wait-lists that can stretch on
It’s time to shine the glow stick on homelessness. So says a Port Coquitlam teenager, who is organizing a guided walk of homeless camps to raise funds for a Tri-Cities shelter. Danielle Morneau, 17, is organizing Light Up The Night, a 30-minute tour on Sunday, Feb. 13 through areas where Port Coquitlam homeless people live to show residents the other side of the story. With 15-minute rallies planned before and after the walk, Morneau said the event was named Light Up The Night to shine a light for those forced to sleep outside in the dark. Walkers will be given a glow stick for their tour of the Coquitlam River. The Heritage Woods Secondary student said she had been considering the idea after reading Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations by twin authors Alex and Brett Harris, and listening to her father, Rhino Marketing’s Doug Morneau, who always encouraged her to follow her passions. As part of a class philanthropy project, Morneau decided to speak with Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group members and Hope for Freedom Society workers about where homeless camps are located. “A lot of young people don’t see homelessness. We assume it’s not in our area,” Morneau said. “I thought walking would be a good idea to show people this is where the homeless are. This is where they sleep. This is where people live.” So far, she says 50 people have registered for the walk, including some from municipal government and the non-profit sector. Morneau said she is hitting the ground this week armed with posters and pamphlets to recruit teens who are interested in attending, and interest is beginning to swell at several Tri-Cities high schools. “I’m wanting to get about 500 people out. That’s what I’ve ordered for glow sticks and bracelets,” she said. “People who didn’t go to the event, I want them to wonder, ‘What did I miss out on?’” While the event is about offering financial support, Morneau also hopes participants will just become inspired. That’s why information booths on various local eco-projects and non-profits will greet walkers as they arrive. “I’m wanting to mainly raise awareness for homelessness more than anything else, have a change of heart in our community,” she said. The Feb. 13 walk starts at 7:30 p.m. from Leigh Square, with registration starting at 7 p.m. Admission is by $5 donation to support the shelter

Lake named in honour of veteran Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com
F
or some, the name might evoke frosty images of fresh snowfalls on frozen ponds. But mention Winter Lake to 84year-old Elsie Van Leeuwen and she melts with warm memories of a longlost brother. Located in the Coquitlam watershed, Winter Lake was recently named after Benny Winter, Van Leeuwen’s older brother. The Geographical Names Board of Canada and the provincial government named the small lake in remembrance of Winter, who disappeared in 1943 while serving on a Second World War Air Force mission. “I think it’s a real honour,” Van Leeuwen said. “I don’t think this generation realizes what a loss it was to our families to lose a member. Especially in those days, I think our families were more closely knit because we didn’t have television and all the other attractions. We played much more with our brothers and sisters.” Born in Finland in 1921, Winter moved to Coquitlam with his family when he was six years old. He graduated from New Westminster’s T.J. Trapp Technical High School in 1939. The following year, Winter enlisted in the Air Force. The Tri-Cities teen left Coquitlam for training that August. Van Leeuwen still remembers the day. “It was 1940. I was 14. I couldn’t even say goodbye,” she recalls. “But I did write to him all the time, and I kept a number of his letters here.” Winter was posted to a squadron that was flying air patrol and air-sea rescue missions off Great Britain’s coast. He was later transferred to Southeast Asia. On Aug. 24, 1943, he disappeared completely. Winter and his crew had taken off in their liberator aircraft from a jungle base in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, to fly a 3,219-kilometre (2,000-mile) reconnaissance mission to the Andaman Islands. When they reached 113 kilometres out to sea, all contact with the aircraft was lost. Nobody ever heard from 22-year-old Winter or his aircrew again. The five men were reported missing and presumed dead. Winter has no known grave, but he is commemorated on the Singapore War Memorial in Malaya. “He was a very good boy,” Van Leeuwen remembers. “The teachers all liked him and he went to Sunday school. And he loved airplanes, absolutely.” The Coquitlam woman shared the story of her big brother Benny for The

Elsie Van Leeuwen and her son Barry with a photograph and medals of Elsie’s brother Benny Winter, who went missing in 1943 while flying a Second World War reconnaissance mission. A lake in the Coquitlam watershed (the middle one on the map below) has been named in his honour. Coquitlam Lake is on the left. NOW’s Remembrance Day issue in 2009. One year later, Winter Lake was named in his honour. Local historian Guy Black saw The NOW article and approached Van Leeuwen’s family. “After reading a story about Benny Winter in your paper in November 2009, I was moved by the emotion I could feel from Benny’s sister,” Black wrote in an e-mail. “I wanted to do something for her and in memory of Benny.” He tracked down Van Leeuwen and her family to tell them about the provincial place-naming program, which commemorates B.C. residents who lost their lives in war. After they discussed the idea, Black contacted a private researcher in Ottawa to get a copy of Winter’s military service record. He then compiled an application package and mailed it to Victoria. For Black, the process was familiar since he had already helped get locations named after two other Tri-Cities veterans — McCrea Lake for Pilot Officer Leslie McCrea, and Kreut Ridge for Flight Sergeant Arthur Kreut. McCrea and Kreut were childhood friends in Port Moody. Both were killed while serving in the Air Force during the Second World War. Hanson Lake is named after their boyhood friend, Edward Hanson, who also died in service. “I am fascinated by Canadian mil-
itary history and try to do whatever I can to help our veterans and especially to remember the fallen,” said Black, a Port Moody resident who received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in 2009. Van Leeuwen’s son, Barry, appreciates the efforts. Although he never met his Uncle Benny, he hopes to someday see the lake named in his honour. “I think that maybe we’ll hire a plane one of these days and fly over Winter Lake. I think it’s just so neat
to have something they chose that’s reasonably close to us,” he said. “Winter Lake feeds into Coquitlam Lake, which is our reservoir where we get all our water from. I can say that for every glass of water that we get out of our tap, one drop came from Winter Lake.” For more information on B.C.’s geographical naming process, visit http:// archive.ilmb.gov.bc.ca/bcnames/. Commemorative place namings are announced each year during Veterans Week.

for years, who are looking to get into affordable housing. I think having a home is really the key to healthy families and good employment, to raising your children in a healthy way.” Another key feature of Farnworth’s plan is to raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour and index it to the cost of living, while also eliminating the $6-per-hour training wage. As well, he pledges to
review categories for income assistance rates and link them to current inflation rates. He would restore supports for single-parent families and increase earning exemptions to help people transition from welfare to work. For families living in poverty, Farnworth plans to lower barriers to post-secondary education, apprenticeships and training programs. West said these issues affect families in the Tri-Cities and throughout the province. “In my time working for
Mike, we’ve certainly heard from people in Port Coquitlam and right across the Tri-Cities who are struggling to make ends meet. This isn’t an issue that just impacts Vancouver. It’s in Surrey. It’s in Port Coquitlam. It’s in Coquitlam. It’s in Kamloops. It’s in Prince George,” West said. “We need to recognize that there’s a role for the province to be playing to help combat that. So that’s what Mike has said he’s going to do, and he’s the only candidate that has laid out some very specific policies
Man facing charges after takedown Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com A stolen truck fitted with an external fuel tank prompted swift action by authorities last week when it was located near an elementary school. At around 10 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Coquitlam RCMP’s prolific target team spotted a man driving in the vicinity of Hastings Street and Patricia Avenue in Port Coquitlam, behind the wheel of a Ford
F350 that had been reported stolen. A large external fuel tank had been installed in the bed of the truck, according to the RCMP. With Westwood Elementary and Maple Creek Middle schools nearby, police called in the Lower Mainland traffic services helicopter, Air 1 and the integrated dog service to take down the stolen vehicle. Alen Krasnici, 33, from Vancouver, was arrested without incident. He is wanted on five outstanding warrants, and
investigators are recommending five new charges to Crown counsel for review: obstruction of a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in instruments and driving while prohibited. Krasnici remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 7. Prolific team Sgt. Steve Reinhart said having integrated teams like Air 1 and the police dog service was “a huge
factor” in having a safe arrest. “Thanks to them we were able to monitor the vehicle’s movements, make the arrest and maintain public safety at the same time. It was great work all around,” Reinhart said in a release. School District 43 spokesperson Cheryl Quinton said no additional security measures were required in or around the school.
on how he would help alleviate it. All of this goes hand in hand. I think it’s the first time in a long time that we’ve had a political leader come forward with a serious and
detailed plan to help address what is a growing issue of inequality in the province.” Farnworth, who was travelling in northern B.C., could not be reached for comment.

Police enforcement campaign focuses on distracted drivers Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com More than 32,000 tickets have been issued against distracted drivers in B.C. this year, and police are dialling up the campaign again in the hopes people will finally hear the message. “A driver travelling at 90 km/h who takes their eyes off the road for just five seconds drives the length of a football field, so even a brief glance at a text message or dialing a cellphone can cause serious injury or death,” Solicitor General Rich Coleman said in a news release. One year into the distracted driving law, police agencies are vowing to crack down on cellphone use behind the wheel, calling up resources for an enforcement campaign. Coquitlam RCMP issued 616 tickets for distracted driving last year, and a speed-reader board has already been set up in front of Coquitlam City Hall for the “Get home safely to your Valentine” campaign for February. “What we notice is that people are really tied to their electronic devices,” said Sgt. Dave Stewart of the Coquitlam RCMP traffic services section. “Where there’s traffic congestion, it seems the frequency of violations goes up. [The] focus for this anniversary is to re-enforce the law and awareness of this legislation, as it is a major factor in serious injury and fatal collisions.” During the B.C. campaign kickoff, police began pulling drivers over in Burnaby. During those one and a half hours, officers spotted 45 violations — including 26 for cellphone use and 12 for not wearing seatbelts. One man ran a red light while talking on his phone. “Despite saturating the area with police offi-
cers, we had to allow just as many violations go,” says Supt. Norm Gaumont, who oversees traffic services in RCMP-policed areas across the Lower Mainland. “We couldn’t process the volume of violators fast enough. We could have pulled over a driver a minute for distracted driving or seatbelt infractions, if we’d had double the officers out there.” Distracted driving was considered a contributing factor in 48 per cent of all fatalities in Lower Mainland jurisdictions patrolled by RCMP. “If you look at our statistics, it’s clear the public doesn’t realize just how dangerous it can be if you don’t have your full focus on the road,” Gaumont said. This month, police will be on the lookout for distracted driving behaviours like texting, talking on a hand-held cellphone, putting on makeup and reading a newspaper or book. “Across the province we will be looking for any driver behaviour that takes their attention from the road,” said Supt. Mike Diack, who heads up traffic services for Mounties in B.C. He suggested police will be using innovative ways to check drivers. “There may be a police officer in that mascot costume.” According to the year-old legislation, if drivers want to make a phone call on a cellular phone or check e-mail, they must use a handsfree device or pull their vehicle over. The fine for using an electronic device without hands-free technology while driving is $167. Moreover, drivers caught texting or emailing may receive three driver penalty points in addition to the fine. Drivers in the graduated licensing program are not permitted to use any electronic device, even if it is hands-free.

Opinion
‘Stupid is as stupid does’ Re: “There really are people that stupid,” column, Friday, Jan. 28. Thank you so much to Bob Groeneveld for a great column. I have seen (and hate to say it) many young women, far more than men, driving while texting. Even mothers with kids in the car. I am always tempted to take a picture with my cellphone (I take transit, by the way), note the licence number and call it in. Maybe billboards captioned “Stupid is To The as stupid does” with a picture of a person texting while driving would make people more aware. I think if one is that stupid, nothing will stop them but, regrettably, getting wrapped around a pole. That is just another reason I feel no drivers should be licensed until the age of 19. Joan Miller Delta
••• Bob Groeneveld’s comment on the stupidity of mixing driving with entertainment is a matter of concern. I don’t own a cellphone or a texting device, and the only time I have used a cellphone in a vehicle is when I have been a passenger. I learned my lesson in pre-cellphone days while pre-driving a long-distance cycling route so as to make a route sheet for a future event. I had a clipEditor board on my knee and was trying to drive and write down distances. I was lucky I didn’t have an accident, but I got my route sheet wrong all the same. I find any distraction from a radio to be irritating, and my vehicle’s radio seldom gets used. Harold Bridge Port Coquitlam

Our View
Cameras in court are long overdue
L
ast week the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that, unlike any other public place in Canada, the government is free to limit photography and recordings in our courtrooms. Walk up to a courthouse and you’ll notice a sign that prohibits the use of all cameras and recording devices inside the buildings. That’s why sketches of proceedings are often used by larger newspapers; photographs are illegal. The Supreme Court’s essential rationale was that the public can’t be trusted to see what goes on in our courthouses. They said judicial proceedings are too nuanced, and the stakes too high, to allow for photography and video cameras and tape recorders and all those other tools of the media allowed everywhere else in Canada. We couldn’t disagree more. In fact, it is because our judicial system is one of the core pillars of our democracy that media should be allowed to broadcast from, and take photos in, courthouses. Our justice system is a frequent target of criticism. But most are unlikely to have ever seen the inside of a courtroom, let alone watched a trial unfold. It’s worth noting that the ban on broadcasting audio and images from courthouses is government policy. The Supreme Court’s policy merely upholds it. Attorney General Barry Penner has indicated that he is open to cameras in courtrooms. But despite being the one man with the power to reverse the medieval policy, he hasn’t actually done anything about it. Penner is known for his love of photo opportunities. Surely he wouldn’t argue that their omnipresence has detracted from his ability to perform his job. It’s time for him to show the same lens love when it comes to courtroom cameras.

What is somewhat surprising about all this is that Falcon, of all the candidates, does not have to establish his credentials as a business-friendly politician. His reputation on that front is already well known. Instead, I would have thought Falcon would have wanted to soften and broaden his image to appeal to a wider base of voters. Of course, he may think that’s not necessary during the leadership campaign. And, to be fair, the membership of the Liberal party — who are the ones choosing the leader — are certainly pro-business in their outlook, so coming across as the most business-friendly candidate will not be a disadvantage in that community. But whoever wins the leadership race will immediately have to govern for all British Columbians — not just party members. And the winner will eventually have to face the electorate in an election. If Falcon does indeed prove victorious on Feb. 26, he will soon discover that support from the business community can only take him so far. In a general election, the winner will need the support of a lot more people than simply CEOs.

Sticking up for Mexico Re: “Mexican vacation turns into a nightmare,” Friday, Jan. 28. I feel I must comment on the story of MLA Diane Thorne and her husband in Progreso, Yucatán. Progreso is also my second home, with my other hometown being Maple Ridge. I am sorry they had such a troubling incident here, but I can perhaps shed some light on the story from a Mexican point of view. Mexico, being a foreign country, also has a very different judicial system. Our system is build on To The Editor the British common law, and also the U.S. In Mexico, the system is the Napoleonic code. It is the rule here that when a car accident happens and there appears to be injuries, or damage to cars, etc., the driver is always taken to the jail. The person is held at the jail until an investigation into the accident occurs, to find out who is to blame and to reach a settlement. We, as foreigners in a country that is not ours, may not like it, but that is the law here. From the story it appears that the insurance adjuster was also present, another common occurrence here. Usually, the adjuster is on the road at the accident site as well. They are trying to reach an agreement between the two parties. If this was a setup or scam, there seems to be a lot of people involved, and to have the accident preplanned to happen exactly as it did would require masterful organization. I feel the only person who does not fit into the story properly is the American, Pedro. Maybe he was the one who thought this was a good opportunity for some money. If the insurance agent was on the scene, why or how would Pedro pay for Neil Edmondson’s release?

MMA is too violent Re: “Banning mixed martial arts doesn’t make sense,” column, Friday, Jan. 21. I feel that MMA is too violent for the younger generation or any generation. Yes, there are probably fewer head injuries than in boxing, but any head injury, in my mind, is unacceptable as later in life there could be consequences to one’s health. I also believe UFC president Dana White should announce that the UFC has taken out or provides private health-care insurance to ensure that any person with any type of head injury is covered for treatment and the resulting hospital care, also any other severe injury resulting in hospital care. Neil Edmondson, right, was held in a Mexican jail after a car accident in Progreso. I think spending time in any jail would be very traumatic, let alone in Mexico — except he was at the police station, not a jail. We do not have a jail in Progreso. I wanted to write to you about this story as we live in a wonderful part of the world here. Approximately 600 (mainly) Canadians live along the Yucatán coast during the winter months, and we are made to feel very welcome and treated as members of the community. Merida, the capital of the Yucatán, is 30 kilometres away. It is a beautiful colonial city of 1.2 million people, and the local police do not carry guns. I don’t say there is no crime here, but very
few of the foreign visitors would have incidents to report, at least none I have heard. We, the foreign population here, are constantly being asked by friends at home to comment on the sensational stories the Canadian and American news cover, and of course the government will issue a travel warning. Like so many of the stories, perhaps all the details need to be explored. I know we love our second home. We do not feel vulnerable in our second country, and we are very welcomed by our Mexican neighbours. I hope that Ms. Thorne and her husband will again visit Mexico, and I would welcome her to my home to meet the many Canadian,

Port Moody council vetoes plan to build 27 houses in Noons Creek watershed Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Environment trumped development in Port Moody last week when council voted unanimously against rezoning a forested area to allow for new homes. More than a dozen speakers voiced concerns about a plan proposed by ParkLane Homes to build 27 houses north of Cranberry Court and east of west Noons Creek. Each lot would span at least 1,045 square metres (11,249 square feet). Neighbourhood residents discussed issues such as traffic, water pressure and emergency access. However, council put more weight on comments from environmental experts. Elaine Golds spoke on behalf of the Burke Mountain Naturalists, who joined the Port Moody Ecological Society to oppose the plan. “The first thing we’re concerned about are the impacts on Noons Creek,” Golds said at the public hearing. “Noons Creek already runs dangerously close to dry every summer and that’s because of impacts from previous developments …
“What’s being put in front of council is not desirable. It is not a sustainable development for that site.”
Joe Trasolini
Port Moody Mayor More development within the Noons Creek watershed could tip the fragile balance and turn Noons Creek from a year-round coho-producing creek to an ephemeral stream with only winter flows — no coho and no resident cutthroat trout.” As well, two species of frogs could be put at risk for sur-
vival if their forest habitat is destroyed, Golds said. “The proposed development seems little more than oldfashioned urban sprawl high on a hill.” The province is rolling out a plan to achieve net-zero deforestation, Golds added, since forests store carbon and can help fight global warming. By protecting its forests, Port Moody might earn provincial recognition. Ruth Foster, co-founder of the Mossom Creek Hatchery, said local volunteers struggle with low water volume and unnaturally high water temperatures at Noons Creek, especially in the summer. “For the environment’s sake, for goodness sake, keep this acreage reserve parcel near Noons Creek undeveloped,” Foster said. “The Noons Creek watershed has suffered enough indignities, and we need to protect and treasure what is still intact.” Deana Grinnell of ParkLane Homes said the company has installed “interceptor channels” for the stream and consults with an arborist to manage forest conditions. “The purpose of those channels is to capture rainfall, clean water and redirect them

through the interceptor channels back into Noons Creek,” Grinnell said. “It’s part of a strategy that’s in place today for the other parcels and will benefit this development as well. Seventyfive-per-cent of the area that we own will ultimately remain in its current forested condition, and we appreciate that outcome as well.” Council, however, sided with the environmentalists and unanimously opposed ParkLane’s plan, with councillors Diana Dilworth and Gerry Nuttall absent from the meeting. Coun. Meghan Lahti said the city is well aware of the impacts of deforestation on the watershed. “I think that taking that size of a parcel of land and placing that limited number of houses on it is a very poor use of that land,” Lahti said. “I wouldn’t support it at any time. It’s a perfect example of what we’ve been striving against for the last 15 years in Port Moody.” Mayor Joe Trasolini agreed. “I am convinced that what’s being put in front of council is not desirable,” Trasolini said. “It is not a sustainable development for that site.”

At the annual general meeting of the Port Moody Ecological Society on Feb. 16, the guest speaker will be Dr. Andrew Trites from the University of B.C., whose team assembled the blue whale skeleton on display at the UBC Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Trites will talk about the endangered blue whale, the largest mammal on Earth. Despite their massive size, the food they eat is minuscule. Blue whales feed by gulping large quantities of sea water and filter out tiny nutritious krill with their baleen. Once, blue whales were hunted almost to extinction, but hunting in Canada ceased in 1966. Every spring and fall, a few blue whales still migrate past Vancouver Island. Trites, who is director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the UBC Fisheries Centre, also carries out research on some Stellar sea lions that are kept at the Reed Point Marina in Port Moody. In his presentation, he will briefly describe this research, which is focused on determining what these sea lions eat and how that might explain why their populations have essentially vanished in the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Following Trites’ presentation, Ashley Graham from the City of Port Moody will provide a brief description of the results of the fish inventory conducted in the Port Moody arm of Burrard Inlet this past year. The Port Moody Ecological Society, along with the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society and others, was a partner in this project. This year, the Port Moody Ecological Society will be

Talking books bond club members together Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com
R
eading has become a loud pastime — and one Port Moody book club couldn’t have it any other way. Toni Pandini has lived around the world, and each time she moved to a new city, she would drop into the library and seek out a book club. For 20 years she met with others to discuss a monthly read. It was a way to meet new people, but more importantly, to keep turning the pages. “I’ve always been a big reader,” she says. That was before the macular degeneration began 10 years ago, and her vision started to wane. Pandini held on to the written word as long as she could. Then she found the Ex Libris Book Club, hosted by the Port Moody Public Library, and realized she didn’t have to cling to paper anymore. “We don’t use the normal library. We’re special people, and we need special books,” Pandini says with a grin. Also known as the Talking Book Club, Ex Libris has been helping visually impaired and low-sighted people continue their love for reading since its launch in 2008. The club emerged from a “talking book tea” in May of that year, when patrons remarked how much they enjoyed talking with others in a similar situation. The name is derived from Latin, meaning “from the books,” an apt moniker given the constraints members face in consuming texts. They range in age and passion for the written word, but share the same struggle: some are legally blind, some partially so, and all are unable to discern the text found on pages. Port Moody Public Library circulation talking book clerk Renelle Acres says she finds the same books in three different formats: large print, audio book and regular print. Amassing the requisite copies for 11 members poses a challenge. She contacts the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) on behalf of book club members to access copies from the non-profit’s library collection. Not all those who join the club can become a member of the CNIB, though, which means Acres must source out other copies for them — typically turning to the library InterLink loan system. Some in the club can still read, providing the text is big enough. The regular print books may seem like a contradiction in terms, but Acres needs something to read along to. Some club members also serve as support staff. “I come with my mom. She can’t drive or see,” Carolyn Gallagher says while sitting next to her mother, Dorothy Pearce. Most of the members use the Daisy Reader audio book system, which consists of a small unit that plays MP3 recordings of narrated

Acres explains that it took a bit of an investment from the city to buy some readers, but notes they’ve paid for themselves in popularity. Books on tape and CD are difficult to use,

Jane Wang says she has over 34 years of experience as an Acupuncturist. Three of Jane's patients attest to the effectiveness of Acupuncture. 1. Mr. Gao is 58 years old and contracted Shingles with bubbles around the waist area. It caused him a lot of pain for about three months. After Acupuncture treatment, he is free of pain. 2. Mrs. Yong is 52 years old and complained of headaches and hearing sounds inside her head. She also complained she had ringing in her ears and had difficulties hearing. She came for help and after two sessions plus some TCM medicine, she can now hear normally. 3. Scott is 23 years old and a senior at SFU. He coughed continually for 3 years but stopped completely after just 3 treatments. He is now strong and coughs no more. B.C. MEDICAL COVERAGE AVAILABLE
because they involve a sequence of multiple cassettes or discs that can involve a struggle when trying to figure out which one goes next. An MP3 recording, she says, allows for larger recording files and thus less physical media for
the listener to handle. The reader itself is also designed for ease of use. The buttons are larger and distinctive to the touch and, for those who have slight vision, include bright yellow indicators. It’s light and portable, so listeners can take their books into the kitchen or living room without having to pause the reading. “It talks to you,” Acres says, “so they know when it’s on and when to put the disc in. It’s really good and easy to use.” The demand for audio books is not abating. Many book club members finish two to three books per week, having eliminated television and movies as sources of entertainment. New releases are often accompanied by audio book versions, as the publisher recognizes a burgeoning market between an aging population and people on the move demanding informative entertainment. “Publishers are doing a lot better job, but it’s tough for us to keep up,” Acres says. “As baby boomers age, more people will want these types of books. And people are also listening to them in their cars, so that’s a problem.” Listening to books on tape, though, is poles apart from reading a book. “The narrator makes a huge difference,” Acres says, explaining that speed, intonation and clarity factor heavily into whether the listener can engage with the story. “Sometimes they record them with accents, and that makes it a bit difficult to understand.” But an audio version of the book can also have its benefits. One member once described the beauty of a novel read with a full cast. “She just loved it, because she said it was like the book came alive.” About half the group’s members come from Port Moody, while the rest are from Coquitlam. They meet monthly to discuss their reads. In January, they mulled over A Place Called Freedom by Ken Folley, while February will revolve around Maeve Binchy’s knack for relationships to go along with Valentine’s Day. Some book clubs tailor their selections according to genre or style. Acres, however, has to accommodate a range of preferences within a group that’s brought together by challenges in vision. “Because the group is so small, I know their tastes and what they’re usually looking for,” she says, adding that some choices are more popular than others. Either way, Acres knows she’ll hear about it. The members are frank in their discussion of likes and dislikes, and the club’s meetings quickly descend into discussion with neighbours about their take on the text. “They don’t hold back,” Acres says with a laugh. While they will have a no-holds-barred debate on whether they enjoyed a story, the boxing gloves come off when someone mentions the name Stuart McLean.

CHAIR’S REPORT
Richard Rainey Chamber Chair
It was my great pleasure to recently attend the Gala & Business Excellence Awards; the premier business celebration in our community which has become one of our “must do” events. The Awards are a great reminder of how rich, diverse, creative and successful our local entrepreneurs and business leaders are. At the same time, I hope that everyone attending the Awards left not just with an appreciation for the winners, but also with a recognition of the fact that we must diligently work to preserve and enhance our business
community. We need to recognize a strong business community as an asset – one which will diminish or even vanish if it is not maintained properly. There will be increasing challenges to maintaining and growing our business community in the Tri-Cities. Some challenges will be difficult to control at the local level, such as currency fluctuations, interest rates and purchasing trends. But others can be managed - provided that there is a resolve to do so – such as business taxes, license and permit requirements, “red tape” and of course transportation and transit. Our Gala was a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful business leaders. Let’s work on making sure that our businesses stay here, and that the TriCities become the destination of choice for new entrepreneurs. Let’s show that we are open for business. richard@raineylaw.com
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT Michael Hind Executive Director
The vehicles for getting your businesses message out to your customers and potential customers has changed so much in the past ten years, it can be very hard to keep up. Especially for those of us, shall I say, a little bit older like myself. There are so many new ways to communicate via the internet. Now, simply having a functional, integrated website is just the baseline. Beyond that, social media has become a critical marketing tool for business. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and YouTube are the major platforms today. With the rate at which technology changes, this could look a lot different in a couple of years. Traditional methods such as newspapers, radio and TV are not to be overlooked and still hold a lot of value. But even these mainstays have had to adjust their business models to meet demands of the new media. But not to fear, it is easier than you think. The tools may change, as technology is prone to do, but the basic premise of communicating Executive Directors report continued on pg 4

Stonebridge Operations Inc.
Stonebridge Operations Incorporated provides electrical, renovation and construction services to home owners, strata complexes and long term care facilities. When renovating, many home owners consider replacing lighting last. We suggest decorating with light first, then choosing the paint and flooring. New lights enhance the look of existing furniture and colors, giving new warmth and ambience to a room. Have you ever considered the convenience of home automation? Imagine being able to control the lights in your home from a computer, phone, or remote control, while providing increased security, flexibility and energy savings. We can help. We are a preferred contractor for the RONA store chains in the lower mainland, and Vancouver Island, providing installation services for everything from cabinets & doors, to standby generators & new light fixtures, outlets and more. We also provide maintenance and repair services to Strata Complexes, assisting in energy, lighting upgrades, and building repair. Currently in our second year of business, we were a recent finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, category of Construction and Manufacturing. We have also been asked to sit on a committee, providing insight and assistance to new entrepreneurs from the Self Employment Program with Douglas College. Advice from an Expert
‘Special’ EI Benefits for the Self-Employed Diane Skidmore Chamber Member
Chamber member Diane Skidmore, CGA of Skidmore & Co CGA outlines the new Employment Insurance options for the self-employed. This growing sector of the work force may now opt-in for benefits to cover some of theuncertainties of life. The Fairness for Self-Employed Act now allows self-employed persons access to EI special benefits on a voluntary basis. These benefits include maternity, parental, sickness, and compassionate care. The following information should help you decide if this program is for you. For the purposes of this act, selfemployed includes someone who operates their own business or who is employed by a corporation in which they control 40% or more of the voting shares and is not otherwise eligible to participate in the regular EI program.
• Sickness – maximum 15 weeks, available when the participant is unable to work due to sickness, injury or quarantine, • Compassionate care - maximum 6 weeks, available when the participant must be away from work temporarily to provide care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with significant risk of death. There are just a few steps required in order to participate in the program: 1. Register with Service Canada (www.servicecanada.gc.ca) at least twelve months prior to applying for benefits, 2. Have earned at least $6,000 in net self-employed earnings over the preceding year, 3. Make the premium payments starting the calendar year you opt in.
• Maternity – maximum 15 weeks, for birth mothers
Once you have received special benefits, you must contribute for as long as you are self-employed. However, if you have not received special benefits, you may terminate participation in the program.
• Parental/adoptive – maximum 35 weeks, available for biological or

net self-employed earnings to the maximum insurable of $44,200). The maximum premium for 2011 is $786.76 with premiums due April 30 the following year. This plan fills in a gap that previously existed in the EI system. To help you decide if you would benefit from participation, review the various examples on the Service Canada website and speak to your accountant. For those that opted-in at the beginning of 2010, the premium payment is due with your tax return April 30, 2011. This information is of a general nature and is not intended to address the specific circumstances of a particular individual. You should not act on this information without appropriate professional advice. Skidmore & Co CGA provides tax, accounting, business and consulting services to business owners, individuals, investors and retirees. The firm is located in Port Coquitlam and serves clients in the Tri-Cities and neighbouring communities. For additional information contact Diane at 604.949.0992 or visit www.skidmorecga.com.

Executive Directors report continued from pg 1 with your customers and community in a timely manner still remains the foundation. The Tri-Cities Chamber is moving to keep up with the communications boom. We have our new Twitter account (twitter. com/TriCitiesCoC) which we are using to get information to our followers. Our Facebook page has recently been updated to better allow members and future members to contact us and to keep them up to date with event information and what’s happening in our organization. Late last year we launched our You Tube Channel. We will continue to add content to which will help and inform the Tri-Cities business community. One local company that has
been very successful in the technology communications field is Rhino Marketing. A great hometown story, Rhino has continued to grow and will soon be opening their brand new head office on Broadway in Port Coquitlam. Watch for info on their Grand Opening Open House in mid-February. There are more options than ever before to get your message out and make meaningful connections with like-minded companies and individuals. Many of our Chamber members are experts in these fields and can help you or your business grow. Don’t be afraid to contact one of them for help. ‘It’s nice listening to a story’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13.
The Vinyl Café host on CBC Radio has garnered quite a following among Ex Libris members, and they muse on whether it would be possible to rent a bus so the de facto “fan club” could attend his next Christmas show. “He’s a good laugh, makes you feel better about yourself,” Pandini says. The only other topic that seems to garner unanimous consensus is Acres’ capacity to help book club members with requests. “She just bends over backwards for us,” Pearce says. Acres, though, downplays her role and chalks up the success of the program to the library’s management. “My bosses have been really supportive,” she
explains. “But it’s nice listening to a story. It reminds me of childhood, and being read to.” Port Moody’s Vivian Tesar recalls how her eyes began to fail her a while back, and she didn’t think to use a service like talking books until she heard about the club. “I liked to read, but life changes so you don’t always have the opportunity,” she says with a smile, adding that joining the club turned the page on her new life. “I just couldn’t believe my good fortune. It’s really opened up my life.” • Do you know someone who is unable to read this story in print? Writer Simone Blais has created a podcast of this article. Rookies set tone in win over Langley
The young guns are getting it done for the Coquitlam Express. The B.C. Hockey League squad delivered a 4-3 slap to the Langley Chiefs on Friday, led by the sharp efforts of rookies Destry Straight and Khaleed Devji. The pair sparked the club to its 18th win of the season, maintaining a share of the seventh and last playoff berth with rival Cowichan Valley. Coquitlam has 10 games left in the regular season, including tonight’s 7 p.m. tilt at the Sports Centre with the Surrey Eagles. Friday’s win came a few days after captain Garrick Perry was knocked out of the lineup with a separated shoulder during the team’s Interior road trip. Perry, who has 19 goals and 23 assists in 45 games, is considered out indefinitely. Straight and Devji have continued their strong play, and elevated their contribution as the season progressed. They delivered against Langley, with Straight scoring once and setting up a pair, while Devji kicked out 28 shots, including 14 in a high-paced third period. “It was a nice one to win, and one we definitely needed,” head coach Jon Calvano said. “We battled through some youthful mistakes and inexperience but got great goaltending from Devji, and some strong penalty killing when we needed it.” The Express never trailed against the third-place Chiefs, but were constantly fending off their Coastal Conference rival. They led 3-2 to start the third period, where an open-ice kneeon-knee check from Langley’s Josh Myers sent Coquitlam scoring star Massimo Lamacchia flying. It resulted in a five-on-three powerplay and led to the eventual game winner by another rookie. This time it was blueliner Mark Begert’s turn to chip in, with his shot five minutes into the third standing as the winner. It’s now a 10-game sprint for Coquitlam, which holds three games in hand on Cowichan Valley in the race for the final playoff spot. The 18-22-1-9 Express host Surrey tonight, then take on league-leading Powell River on Friday and Victoria on Saturday (both 7 p.m.) at the Sports Centre.

NEXT STOP, CRAIGSLIST: Last year’s Minto Cup champion Coquitlam junior A Adanacs club, including the junior B and intermediate teams, has been put up for sale by its president after the city gave a 7:30 p.m. practice slot to the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association.
Jr. Adanacs on the block over floor battle Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com If push comes to shove, the Coquitlam junior A Adanacs could be playing their final season on Poirier Street this summer. The B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League club, along with its affiliated junior B, intermediate A and B Adanac programs, is officially up for sale after losing its 7:30 p.m. Thursday practice time to minor lacrosse. That’s the decision that junior Adanacs president Rocky Zimmerman and executive vice-president/general manager Ken Wood announced Friday following the city’s support of the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association’s request for the coveted time slot. It’s a battle that also affects the Coquitlam senior A Adanacs, who have share the Monday and Thursday 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. practice time with the juniors for many years. As the junior and senior Adanacs see it, the issue is more than just about one 7:30 p.m.

floor time — it’s about the clubs’ ability to survive and thrive. “It’s not like we’re asking for anything that we already didn’t have. It comes down to providing the juniors and senior teams the same practice time that they’ve shared for many, many years,” Wood said. “It’s as simple as that.” Although a battle over midweek floor time has been simmering for two years, the city’s use of the Facility Allocation Policy (FAP) to untangle a contentious issue caused Wood to fire off a fourpage blistering press release Friday that accused the city of turning its back on the Minto Cup champions after 45 years of partnership. While the disagreement over the 7:30 p.m. time slot also involves the Western Lacrosse Association’s senior Adanacs’ Monday practice time, senior Adanacs president and general manager Les Wingrove said the precedent is what worries him most. “[The senior Adanacs] have concerns over the loss of our traditional practice times and deep concerns over the facil-
ity allocation policy on future floor allocation issues,” said Wingrove. “If they can use this to take away this time, what says another minor user group can’t come in and ask for the rest?” The junior Adanacs have traditionally worked with the senior club in divvying up the two 7:30 and 9 p.m. slots on Mondays and Thursdays, as per the contract the senior squad has with the city. The contract doesn’t state the exact times, admitted Wingrove. The CMLA executive, led by president James Abbott, has pushed to acquire some of that weekday floor time for games and possible rescheduled games. Minor vice-president Garrett Ungaro, speaking on behalf of Abbott, said the time was needed to address the concern of too many late games for its kids, who range in age from five to 16. He noted that the Lower Mainland Lacrosse Commission recently passed a bylaw to curtail late start times for youth. “It’s quite unfortunate that it has come to this, but we’ve always maintained that if the juniors and seniors were willing to sit down and negotiate,
we’d talk. As it is, [the junior Adanacs] wouldn’t budge.” Wood said the city failed to follow the FAP when it came to allocating time for the junior A hockey Express, while adding that Coquitlam minor lacrosse saw a reduction of eight teams and more than 50 players over the previous year. He noted that for a organization that is competing at the junior A level and aiming to retain the national title, the late practice time seriously impinges on the club’s ability to attract and retain top 19-to-21-year-old talent — many of them Coquitlam-raised players who have work and post-secondary school commitments. “The way to save this from resulting in the team possibly leaving and keeping it here for the kids is to rewrite the FAP and recognize what has been a historical and traditional working agreement,” Wood said. For his part, Mayor Richard Stewart believes the FAP was used appropriately, and hopes cooler heads will prevail.

Kids scoop up medals Coquitlam made an international splash in Kelowna last week. A delegation of 26 athletes and seven coaches represented the city at the 5th annual International Children’s Winter Games, returning home with a gold, silver and bronze medal. Led by the girls curling team of skip Dezaray Hawes, third Megan Daniels, second Jaymee Lynn and lead Angelique Miller, the Coquitlam contingent rose to the challenge while finishing 10th out of 36 competing cities from 14 countries. The girls curling crew won their 12 to 15-year-old division, while the boys team of skip Kyle Habkirk, third Nicolas Di Marco, second Nicholas Umbach and lead Kento Sato, placed second to a South Korean rink. Figure skater Larkyn Austman registered a bronze in her event, edging out fellow Coquitlam Skating Club athlete Larissa Horobec. In hockey, the Coquitlam bantam A2 Chiefs put in a solid performance against competing teams from Austria, Germany and Ontario. “These games promote the Olympic ideal by enabling, developing, and advancing the understanding and friendship of young athletes,” Mayor Richard Stewart said in a press release.

“We have an allocation process and we’ve checked to make sure that it was applied fairly. Neither [group] is more important than the other, and I won’t suggest that having nine-year-olds playing games at 9 p.m. is acceptable,” said Stewart. Wood said that while the junior club is registered as a not-for-profit organization for fundraising purposes, he and Zimmerman have the right to sell it for the amount they’ve invested into it over the past decade. They wouldn’t be selling it for profit, he said, just as someone taking the club over wouldn’t expect to make a profit on it. “There is no way someone can buy this club and expect to make a profit. It is run year-toyear and breaking even is the realistic goal.” If a local buyer or group cannot be found to take over the club, they would entertain offers from outside Coquitlam, he said. The Maple Ridge senior A Burrards management recently expressed interest in pursuing a junior franchise. Wood said that if the team was moved, it would be due to a lack of support from the city and its elected officials. “All the city is doing is showing a lack of leadership in standing behind the FAP.”

GOMBAR, Greg
November 14, 1964- January 24, 2011
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Greg’s passing at age 46 after a hard fought battle against pancreatic cancer. Greg leaves behind his wife Shannon, daughters Rebecca and Kate, parents Ann and Gerry, brothers Jeff (Susan) and Brent, in-laws Stan and Heather Stewardson, brothers-in-law Kiki (Olivia) and Kevin (Michelle), nephews Braydon, Peter, Kai and Cyrus and nieces Sarah, Meghan and Sienna. Greg fought bravely, with strength and dignity, and never once complained. He was the best husband, father, son, brother, friend and neighbour. This loyal Pepsi employee spent his extra time helping his wife with her dance studio business. Greg loved to fish, golf, play hockey, baseball and bike ride with his girls. He loved food, hanging out with the neighbours in the cul-de-sac and watching the weather channel. He could tell you the forecast at any time! He was immensely proud of the immaculate lawn and garden he kept and the incredible Halloween and Christmas displays he loved to put up each year. His favourite place was the family cabin in Sudden Valley, where he spent many happy times. His ability to find common ground with anyone and make them feel at ease was unmatched. He was a true gentleman and hero who laughed easily and will be missed deeply by all who came in contact with him. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and support staff of 3South at RCH, and hospitalists Dr.Bradley and Dr. Houdani, All went above and beyond the call of duty. A Celebration of Greg’s Life will take place at the Coquitlam Alliance Church (2601 Spuraway Ave., Coquitlam) on Thursday, February 3rd at 1:00PM with a reception to follow. SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers
Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
SUDOKU
Fun By The Numbers
Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
