Key witnesses to the crash that killed Lorraine Cruz and Charlene Reaveley were in a van like this, police say.

They know it’s been traumatic, but they need you to come forward anyway. That is the message police are sending out to those who may have seen the double fatality in Coquitlam play out before them, as investigators fear the crash may have been so “horrific,” it’s preventing witnesses from providing statements. On Tuesday, RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen told a throng of media at the roadside memorial at Lougheed Highway and Pitt River Road that investigators are seeking statements from three different groups of people, including some who may have

post-traumatic stress and “do not want to relive what they potentially may have seen.” “This type of investigation, the easy part is identifying who we feel might be responsible for this particular incident,” Thiessen said. “The hard part comes in gathering the appropriate evidence to support our allegations and support the charges.” The first key witnesses, he said, are the driver and occupants of a white 2008 Chevrolet Uplander minivan that stopped at the scene after the initial crash, when 26-year-old Lorraine Cruz and her boyfriend got out of the Nissan Pathfinder they had crashed. “The occupants of this van made contact with the two ladies that were

subsequently and tragically killed after the second crash,” Thiessen said. “They determined there wasn’t a need for them to remain, and they left the scene. It was after they left the scene that the second crash occurred.” The second crash happened after 30year-old Charlene Reaveley and her husband, Dan, stopped to help. Police allege the second crash was a hit and run. Several vehicles were stopped on Lougheed Highway waiting to turn left onto Pitt River Road, Thiessen added, and police need to speak to those people — no matter how difficult it may be. “We feel it’s possible that they may have witnessed a horrific event,” said  CONTINUED ON PAGE 4, see WITNESSES.

Will election of Christy Clark benefit Tri-Cities? The NOW spoke to all three Tri-Cities mayors in light of Christy Clark’s Liberal leadership win and, in turn, her new standing as B.C.’s premier-designate. Easily the most outspoken local critic of the province in recent years — particularly over issues like the Evergreen Line and Murray Clarke Connector — Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini sees in Clark an opportunity to start anew with respect to transit issues. “I think that that is a huge challenge for her,” Trasolini told The NOW Tuesday. “But I am encouraged because Christy Clark knows this area. She knows about the issues around sustainable funding for TransLink. She knows the immediate need to help TransLink bridge that gap and come up with money for the

Evergreen Line.” Port Moody-Westwood MLA from 1996 to 2005, Clark secured the province’s top job Saturday by garnering 52 per cent of votes on the third ballot. Although she remains without a seat in the provincial legislature, Clark will likely be sworn in as premier at some point this month. In looking ahead to that prospect, Trasolini said the former Gordon Campbell-led version of the party disenfranchised not only his council, but other governments and citizens across the province by stifling input from virtually anyone outside of party ranks. Part of Clark’s platform has been a promise to reverse that trend, a move Trasolini hopes will, in fact, play out. “My relationship with the provincial government has been an issue because of the very thing that everybody is now recognizing — that the provincial government had stopped listening, stopped being open in their governance. But the Green Team at Maple Creek Middle says their recycling program is worth the trouble, since the school is now diverting 85 per cent of its waste. The Green Team began its efforts last year with recycling towers set up in each class to sort cans, Tetra Pacs and paper. Maple Creek student Veronika Kuba said the initiative started well but problems soon arose. “It began great and then everything started to get all sticky and gross from the Tetra Pacs in the tower, and people would put food in it,” Veronika said. “Later this year, we started a new system. We now have a blue bin that’s for recycling paper and plastics, a green waste bin … and a sorter that separates paper and plastics, recycling cans, water bottles and juice boxes.” The young environmentalists are now using the school’s old recycling bins to collect scrap paper that can be reused. Their efforts are making a tangible difference. In the past two years, Maple Creek has reduced its garbage pickups from two dumpsters twice per week to one dumpster every second week. They now produce one-sixth the amount of garbage they previously produced. Besides the obvious environmental impacts, their zero-waste initiative also has financial benefits. The Green Team expects to earn between $1,500 and $2,000 in drink container returns this year — about 400 per cent more than in the past. And for Caitlin Liboiron, the project has fostered positive personal effects

from the moment it began last year. “I’ve never been happier. After all of the years of teachers trying to teach us why we should be recycling, it was finally happening. I learned more things from that first year on Green Team than I had in all my years in school. So we decided to teach these things to other schools so we could try to fix what was already broken,” Caitlin said. “This year, our recycling program is even better than last year’s, and I’m proud to say I was a part of that change. That’s why I’m on the Green Team. I liked feeling like I was part of the solution and not the problem — like all of the gross, rotting food and sticky, smelly juice boxes are worth it, because it is. “We want other schools to feel the same way we do because it is better to be the change than to just sit down and watch it happen.” Project organizer Dana Asher hopes the school district will incorporate zero-waste concepts and provide funds to support waste-diversion projects. “Maple Creek Middle School is currently recycling approximately 85 per cent of the waste brought into our school,” said the Grade 8 teacher. “We are working towards the very attainable goal of making that 100 per cent.” For Green Team member Dana Cairns, educating others is key. “Being a part of the Green Team is more than just recycling. We’re a team and we get to do a lot of fun activities. We’re given the opportunity to speak to others about being green,” Dana said. “It’s a lot of fun and I’m going to really miss it next year when I go to high school.” Fellow teammate Amanda Poulton agrees. “Maple Creek is now known for one of the best recycling programs,”

Port Moody will party like it’s 2013

Party plans are already underway for Port Moody’s year-long hundredth birthday bash in 2013. Cultural services manager Devin Jain said the city hopes to be named a cultural capital of Canada and receive up to $500,000 in federal grant funds, which would help pay for centennial celebrations. Proposed projects begin New Year’s Day with an expanded penguin plunge to mark the beginning of 2013. The event would include a heated tent and live band, with a budget of $4,000. In February 2013, the Port Moody Public Library and Port Moody Station Museum would join together to lead a living heritage project. This $6,500 project includes heritage tours and an afternoon tea. As well, there will listening stations with audio recordings of historical stories told by Port Moody residents, plus a human library in which residents can be “checked out” for one-on-one conversations. “It’s an aspect of the history of Port Moody that you wouldn’t get in another way,” Jain said. “It’s really taking advantage of the wealth of

knowledge that exists and making it interactive.” Next up is a formal Centennial Gala dinner and dance, with a proposed budget of $36,000. This project would see the Olympic arena transformed into an elegant venue for the catered dinner with live music. Then to mark the 100th anniversary of the first-ever Port Moody council meeting, a special meeting is proposed for April 13, 2013. The mayor, council and senior staff would wear period costumes and arrive at the meeting in period vehicles. The proposed agenda would include current city business or a re-enactment of the 1913 council meeting. The cost is pegged at $3,500. In May, a proposed parade would launch a day of celebrations near the civic complex. Festivities would include live music, children’s activities, crafts, displays and food for an estimated $26,000. In June, an Aboriginal Day celebration is proposed along the Inlet and Shoreline trails. The $69,000 event could include the carving of a welcome figure or totem pole, a drum-making workshop, crafts, food

and First Nations performances. Youth will be the focus in July with a proposed expansion to the youth arts festival, complete with performances and art displays. The proposed budget is $5,000. A community picnic will bring residents together at Rocky Point Park in August for a full day of activities. The $10,000 event will include live music, non-power boat tours, free family games and actors in period costumes. In October, a modular train club may be asked to set up exhibits in the Galleria for a $500 honorarium. As well, Ioco Ghost Town Days might be expanded for a $5,000 price tag. The event could see more games and activities, as well as actors in period costume. Another idea is to launch a Civic Treasures website to honour past and present residents who have made significant contributions to Port Moody in areas such as arts, sports, volunteerism and leadership. Fitness fundraiser Sunday will benefit Reaveley family Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com A fundraiser is being held to benefit the family of Charlene Reaveley, who was killed in an alleged hit-andrun accident last month. A day of fitness has been set aside at Klahanie Canoe Club, 501 Klahanie Dr. in Port Moody on Sunday, March 6, to raise money for Reaveley’s family — which includes four children between the ages of one and 10 years old. Organizer Chrissy Duncan broke the news of Reaveley’s death to the bootcamp class based out of Klahanie Health and Wellness, and the group immediately wanted to help. “I talked with the bootcamp group, and they all agreed we

Lack of transit cuts into fun

I never thought I would say that Vancouver, the city of my birth, was a “no fun city.” I scoffed when I read such stories, but Friday night I observed it first-hand. I and a friend attended the most fabulous performance by Maceo Parker and company at the Commodore Ballroom. But we had to leave before the end To The because the SkyTrain was about to shut down for the night. It’s incredulous, especially considering that with the new alcohol level of .05 in place, people from out of town either cannot attend or must take a vehicle. It has not been made easy for citizens to enjoy the “fun” events when their entertainment is disrupted by lack of late-night transportation.

We did not drink, but our enjoyment was cut short by this lack of foresight by our transportation system. It also does not make sense when we are encouraged to take public transit to prevent added pollution. Nor does it make sense when there are many shift workers who cannot take transit either, Editor because of this shutting down of public transit. What goes on in the heads of the TransLink board? I am totally disgusted with this mentality and refusal to properly serve the citizens of the Lower Mainland. Rita Pollock Coquitlam

ext time you’re asked if you want a double-double, you’d better check whether that refers to a coffee or a bypass. That’s because the new place to receive emergency care, apparently, is the Tim Hortons in the lobby of Royal Columbian Hospital. Fraser Health admitted Tuesday that the coffee shop had been used as an extension of the ER from late Monday night to early the next morning. Beds were set up for five patients there, Fraser Health spokesperson Jenn Grover said, starting around 11 p.m. The patients were moved into the regular ER next door by about 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Grover added that no procedures were done on any of the patients, which is a relief, because seeing someone getting stitched up might cause you to forget all about Rrrolling Up The Rim To Win. Seriously, though, even advocates of private health care probably don’t like the optics of this one, although there is something to be said for being able to request a drink without having to pull that little cord and wait for an overworked nurse to show up. They’re right, of course. We need to fund our hospitals adequately, or we’ll be facing more scenarios like this in the future. To demonstrate real change, Clark is going to have to bring in some new faces. And that means some current ministers have to pay the ultimate price. Her real challenge, however, is dealing with two independent MLAs — Bill Bennett and Blair Lekstrom — who left the Liberal caucus on unhappy terms. Clark has been criticized as being a threat to party unity and of being the kind of leader who could wreck the so-called free enterprise coalition. Bringing Bennett and Lekstrom back into caucus — perhaps not cabinet — would go a long way to show that maintaining party unity is indeed something she is capable of. The night of her leadership win, all the MLAs joined her on the stage in a show of at least public unity. Watching from the floor was Bennett, who seems ready to rejoin his colleagues. We appreciate the concerns expressed at Coquitlam council, as reported in your Feb. 23 edition, over the prospect of reductions to transit services and, while details are not yet available, we wanted to provide some background on the process underway in 2011. From 2005 to 2010, TransLink delivered a significant boost to transit services across Metro Vancouver, including increases to the SkyTrain system and the number of cars as well as more buses on more routes for more hours per day. We will also minimize service reductions in areas where there are no alternatives. Services trimmed on one route or time period will be reinvested in others, with the first priority being to meet unfulfilled demand in the same service area. So, unlike the situation in so many other North American cities, there will be no cuts to total service in Metro Vancouver. In fact, the

The number of people with unleashed dogs on the Traboulay PoCo Trail along the Coquitlam River is increasing. As an avid bike rider, I often have to stop suddenly to avoid hitting an unleashed dog — no apology from the owner. In fact, owners seem quite indignant at the fact that I dare ride my bike along the trail. I have also had large dogs chase after my bike, teeth bared. Recently, when talking with a few people who also ride bikes along the trail, I was surprised to discover that a number of them carried those extending metal batons that police use, especially to beat unleashed dogs that chased them, and that nearly all of them carried bear spray/pepper spray that they said they would use on dogs that chased them. When walking along the trail with my wife, she has twice had unleashed dogs jump up against her. We are seniors, and this is dangerous. No apology from the dog owners, as usual. I’m going to buy some pepper spray now, too. And if the owner gets aggressive because I sprayed their dog, I might just spray the owner, as well. Robin J. Elliott Coquitlam

They didn’t do that just with me. That was their style of late and they suffered the consequences.” Like Trasolini, PoCo Mayor Greg Moore touted the benefits of having a premier who knows the lay of the land from a Tri-Cities perspective. “It’s nice to have someone with local ties in the premier’s office that knows about the Tri-Cities and the issues that we’re facing,” he said in an interview Tuesday. “I think it’s a big advantage for us. She knows the community. We don’t have to describe or educate her on what our issues are, or where certain things are even from a geographic perspective. We can go in there and get working right away.” Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart pointed to “enormous challenges” facing Clark in the area of the province’s changing demographics. “That’s going to be her biggest challenge I think: to deal with the enormous costs of health care,” he said. “As our population ages here in Canada, every government has to face the cost of government service going up, the cost of health care going up. As well, the impending ability of the taxpayer to cover that is going to be limited by the fact that in five years, there will be as many seniors as children in this country.” Having served as MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville from 2001 to 2005, Stewart worked alongside Clark for all four of his years in provincial government. “I think she’s very capable, primarily very capable of listening. I don’t think she forms opinions enormously quickly, which is an asset in that kind of position,” he said. “At the same time, she’s capable of making the tough decisions, so I certainly wish her well in the position. Church hosts national conference Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com The Coquitlam Alliance Church is challenging believers to think and thinkers to believe. This weekend, the church is hosting the 2011 Apologetics Canada Conference featuring a panel of PhD speakers from across Canada and the United States. The word “apologetics” stems from the Greek word “apologia,” which means to give a response or defense to beliefs. The conference aims to equip people with information to help them defend their faith.

Pastor Jon Morrison said the two-day conference will include guest speakers as well as interactive breakout sessions. “We just want to share with people some of the robust intellectual heritage that is in Christianity … There is an intellectual backbone to Christianity,” Morrison said. “It’s important to know you don’t have to check your brain at the door when you come in a church.” At the conference, Morrison will also launch a book called Questions: You’re Probably Already Asking, which he cowrote with Calvary Baptist Church pastor Chris Price. The book discusses questions asked by local youth and offers answers

from an apologetics perspective. Morrison expects 500 students to attend the event from Metro Vancouver, Alberta and the United States. The conference takes place Friday, March 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2601 Spuraway Ave. Advance tickets cost $20 for students, $30 for adults and $45 for couples. Singer/songwriter Mark Fossen will perform in PoCo Friday, March 4 as part of the Crossroads Hospice Society fundraiser concert series. Known for his versatility behind the mic, Fossen takes to the stage of The Gathering Place at 9 p.m., while the open stage portion of the evening runs from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door, with all proceeds going to Crossroads.

Coquitlam via Cortes Island

Depicting imagery from locales including Morocco, the French Riviera and the southern U.S., French-born artist Catherine Tableau will be the focal point of a two-week long exhibit at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts. Entitled Earth’s Dream, Stone’s Dream, Tableau’s exhibit consists of mixed media works and paintings on board, and represents the culmination of her travels from southern France to her current home on Cortes Island. “[My] paintings explore primitive territories through colour and medium, evoke Earth’s raw and mineral beauty from which we come from and will return,” Tableau said in a press release. Set to coincide with the onset of Festival du Bois this weekend, Tableau’s exhibit kicks off with two opening receptions. eborah Solberg has made a habit of making something out of very little. In fact, it’s that attitude that has carried her through two decades as the self-described “chief, cook and bottle washer” behind the Theatrix Youtheatre Society. This June marks the 20th anniversary of the area’s only non-profit youth arts group, which strives to make family finances a non-factor when it comes to having children participate in music, theatre, dance or acting. “I was really interested in establishing Theatrix because I was a single mom at the time and I couldn’t afford to put my kids in anything, so we made it our mandate for kids to be able to come whether they could afford to come or not,” Solberg said. Aside from the nuts and bolts of the performing arts, Theatrix serves as an outlet, or at times a refuge, for kids who are looking beyond what their peer group at school can offer them. “I was a tall, gangly, awkward kid, so Theatrix gave me the ability to have an outlet,” said Graham Myers, a Theatrix alumnus who now co-owns Second Storey Theatre in Port Coquitlam. “I was headed down the wrong path. The direction I was headed in was not a good one. Doing improv and being involved with Theatrix gave me an outlet to find myself and then an outlet to be creative instead of destructive.” Ditto for Port Moody’s Cynthia van Ginkel, whose three kids, Lucas, Sage and Nica, have been involved with Theatrix for three years. “My kids are all really outgoing, so it gives them a good outlet,” she said. “School is not always conducive to being totally outgoing or extroverted, so it’s a good venue for that. They just love it.” Solberg got the Theatrix ball rolling shortly after moving to B.C. from Alberta in the late 1980s. She began getting involved in various Lower Mainland-based arts organizations, and given her previous experience — she was a teacher and the organizer of an arts group in Lethbridge — those in the local arts loop asked the 54-yearold if she’d be interested in doing the same thing in the Tri-Cities.

Up to the task, Solberg began with modest-sized shows and classes at places like Coquitlam’s Victoria Hall and the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody. “I started off thinking this would be small little plays and some classes for kids, and they turned out to be big plays and lots of classes for the kids,” Solberg said. “But the idea has always been to build a community within the community.” Since that time, her students have staged dozens of original and adapted shows, covering off on proverbial classics like Peter Pan and The Nutcracker, or off-the-beaten-path productions like How to Eat Like a

Child or The Pied Piper of Hamelin. Though housed at varying community centres and churches in the Tri-Cities, Theatrix draws students from across Metro Vancouver and Solberg’s clientele ranges in age from three to north of 60. Part of Theatrix’s cachet is the fact that Solberg involves her students in every facet of certain shows, empowering them to make decisions on anything from wardrobes to song selections. “They actually build that show,” Solberg said. “We’ve had kids come back for 10 years because that’s what they want to do — they want to build

the show and they want to perform in the show. They love it.” One of those made-by-the-kids type of shows is the group’s upcoming performance of Alice in Wonderland, which runs from March 3 to 5 at the Inlet Theatre. “I’ve memorized almost all my lines and almost all of my songs,” said nineyear-old Lucas Fleming, who’ll play the part of the Mad Hatter starting tomorrow. “I have a lot of silly lines that I have to say and I have to do a lot of silly stuff. I’m pretty good at doing silly stuff actually, even when I’m not acting.” Outside of partnering with the kids themselves, Solberg has aligned her efforts with local elementary schools for a program called Lunch Box Theatre. The six-week program, which also serves as a fundraiser for local parent advisory councils, involves Solberg travelling to local schools to help young kids hone their acting skills, on top of helping them get a sense of what it takes to stage a production. But despite Solberg’s success, it’s not like she hasn’t dangled dangerously close to the precipice of going belly up at times. In fact, she’s watched many other groups do just that. “We’re quite amazed that we’re still standing, because we’ve seen a lot of arts groups go down,” she said. “I’m pretty dedicated. Periodically, I go broke. I put myself at financial risk to keep it going.” It’s through the help of volunteers like 23-year-old Coquitlam native Lisa Scott that the Theatrix boat keeps afloat. Having had her interest in the arts sparked by Solberg four years ago, Scott makes a point of balancing her studies at Simon Fraser University with the opportunity to give back to Theatrix whenever she can. “[Solberg] has been incredibly influential on me,” Scott said. “She’s got so much information to give you and she’s a great teacher. She lets you take risks and try new things. She’s just a really great mentor.”

Catch these shows before they wrap up Two exhibits currently on display at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts wrap up this weekend, while a third continues through March 18. The first features the works of Mong Yen. Originally from Cambodia, Yen and his family fled to Vietnam during the Khmer Rouge uprising in the mid 1970s before again being forced to flee, this time to Thailand. From there the family ended up in Toronto in 1980, before Yen moved to Metro Vancouver in 1992. It’s those experiences, and the places he’s seen in between, that have helped shape his exhibit of watercolour and egg tempera paintings, Quiet Path, which will be shown through Saturday, March 5. Joining Yen for the exhibit will be a pair of Coquitlam residents: photographer Daryl Spencer and watercolour painter Lori Motokado. Entitled The Essential Landscape, Spencer’s exhibit consists of 38 black and white photographic prints combined into one vignette. “The challenge in photography is often one of elimination,” Spencer said in a press release. “The world is big. The world is cluttered. Creating The Essential Landscape is carefully focusing in from the clutter to find the elements of a scene that make it interesting, that evoke emotion, that capture the essence.” Taking her inspiration from the stories and personalities behind her subjects, Motokado’s exhibit, Possessions, explores how we perceive things of value. “Before society’s current cycle of buy, replace and discard, things were built to last, were cherished, handed down and reused,” she said. “This series explores various everyday artifacts to re-examine prevailing values; our worth is not based on what we own, rather it is our experiences and stories that give our possessions true value.” Possessions and Quiet Path run through Saturday, March 5, while The Essential Landscape will be on display until Friday, March 18.

New program at Douglas A new program at Douglas College will train mental health care professionals to help individuals with mental illnesses take charge of their lives and reintegrate into their communities. The post-degree diploma program in psychosocial rehabilitation — the first of its kind in Western Canada — will help satisfy a long-standing need in the mental health care field, says co-ordinator John Higenbottam. Psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) is a support program for individuals with mental disorders that focuses on helping them function in their communities and reintegrate into mainstream society. The PSR model eschews drug treatment and institutionalization in favour of what is called “recovery orientation.” “Services are community-based, and clients take an active role in their own recovery,” says Higenbottam. “It’s now recognized that meeting these needs is key in improving commun-

ity living for those with mental illness.” A main focus of PSR is education; clients are taught how to best manage their mental illness and decide how they want to be treated. Similar programs are offered in Ontario, but the program at Douglas has one particular advantage, says Higenbottam. After having spent the first part of my career with large downtown Vancouver law firms, I made the decision some six years ago to relocate my practice to the Tri-Cities, where I’ve lived for many years. At the time, many of my “downtown” friends and colleagues were mystified by my decision. They wondered (aloud, in many cases) whether I’d finally lost my marbles. “Are there clients out there?” they asked. “Aren’t there only criminal lawyers in

the suburbs?” I think I heard it all. And at the beginning, I must confess, I dreaded my frequent trips back into Vancouver, where I’d be teased mercilessly by the Yaletown cabal. I look forward to those trips into Vancouver now. I tell my friends, truthfully, that the drive from my house to my office is shorter than was the walk from my parkade to my office in Vancouver. I tell them that my clients appreciate that they don’t have to pay to park at my office (unless they do it very badly in which case they pay to get towed by one of my other clients, the towing company). I tell them that I get to go home for lunch, and when I don’t, I have my choice among our fantastic Tri-Cities restaurants. Chair’s Report Continued on Page 4

An exciting new initiative the Chamber is piloting right now is our Youth Mentorship Program. Under the watchful eye of Vice-Chair, Rick Pasin from Sprott-Shaw College, the program endeavours to match young Tri-Cities business students with established mentors from the spectrum of the Chamber Membership. Working with a dedicated committee composed of staff from SFU, Douglas College and School District 43, Rick has put together a comprehensive program which can only help the local business community in the future. The program itself is very stimulating where the students can gain hands-on, practical feedback from local business leaders to assist them as they move forward with their careers. A formal evaluation and feedback process is in place to ensure that the students are getting the maximum information. What is the First Step?

Lime is essential for a healthy lawn and will help your lawn grow green and strong, as well as deter pesky weeds.

Feed Your Lawn Every 6 Weeks

It is best to fertilize with a “slow release” product so nutrients are released as your lawn needs them, rather than all at once. Plus, as nutrients are released, the root system of your grass will fill in bare areas, making it harder for weeds to germinate.

How Often Should I Mow?

Mowing too often or at the wrong times can damage the condition and vigour of the lawn. Mowing on a regular basis stimulates development of a nice, dense lawn with a strong growth rate. Your lawn should be cut about once a week.

Trim and prune hedges, plants and shrubs and rake all debris which may have accumulated during the winter. This will give your property a clean and tidy appearance.

Soil Testing

This will determine exactly what is going on with the soil under your lawn and in your garden beds. If your lawn is not healthy and has an abundance of weeds, your soil testing will likely show that your ph level is not at a high enough standard. Soil testing in your garden beds will tell you which plants will work best.

What is the Ideal Length?

If “too short” your lawn will not be able to take up water and nutrients through the roots which can result in poor growth. Plus, open turf is much more susceptible to weeds and moss. If grass is kept “too long”, the lawn looks neglected. An ideal cut lawn would be 2 inches in height.

You could consume your life with complaining. Looking at the cup half full, you notice that it’s also dirty and chipped. You could even complain about the taste of the water in that lousy half-filled cup. You could fill your conscious thoughts with a running commentary on all that’s wrong with everyone else and everything you see. Anxious, angry or sad, and blind to the good things in life — the friendly, familiar smile in the crowd, a call from your best friend, the giggles of a child, green lights and smooth sections along the bumpy road of life. I start each day with a prayer of thanks, and with an attitude of gratitude I look for the good throughout the day. I seek the

Expectations can surprise you

At our Chinese New Year’s dinner, my kids shared a box of brightly wrapped candies. Each was labelled with Chinese writing none of us could read. They were repeatedly surprised by their flavours. My son said that his candy didn’t taste at all like the fruit on the wrapper. When my daughter first bit into a yellow square, she said it first tasted kind of lemony, but ultimately she admitted that Sponge Bob tastes bad. For our Boxing Day party, my aunt accidentally baked her cake with salt instead of sugar, but no one was more surprised

My mom taught me the secret to a meaningful life: give more than you get. She committed herself to her family, friends and community. She seized every opportunity to make the world better for others through her volunteer work for our church and her seniors centre, through thoughtful gifts and cards, comforting words, a helping hand and countless not-so-random acts of kindness. Her life was rich not in a material way but in

her connections with others. Now nearly eight years since she died, I continue to hear how she touched others and was loved by them. This was her secret to happiness: not to hoard the good things in life or hope for a perfect world, but to give the good from your own heart to make this a better world for others. Surrey uses muscle to stop Express

Charlie Sheen’s acting career has all the makings of a train wreck. The Coquitlam Express, at least, are maintaining their dignity in what appears to be a flameout to their first season back on Poirier Street. The B.C. Hockey League club faced elimination in Game 4 last night (past The NOW’s deadline), on the heels of Monday’s decisive 7-1 slapdown by the Surrey Eagles. Playing a gregarious if not borderline dirty game, the Eagles proceeded to bounce and bash Coquitlam around Monday, breaking open a 1-1 game with six straight goals. The series began with Surrey winning the first two games by margins of 4-2 and 4-1. That two of them were shorthanded, and that the Express were a mute 0-9 on the powerplay, likely enhanced Surrey’s decision to play it rough. If there’s a fear factor, it’s completely one way. “I wouldn’t be scared either. I’d take cheap shots at us, spears and crosschecks and play playoff aggressive hockey like they are, and they are doing a great job of that,” Coquitlam coach Jon Calvano said. Alex Petan scored the lone Express goal, while Robert Lindores had two for Surrey. The series continued last night. Game 5 would be played tomorrow, if necessary, and if Coquitlam pushes it to Game 6, the series would return to Poirier for Friday, 7 p.m.

Panthers fight back

Like a cornered cat, the Port Moody Black Panthers have only begun to scratch. The junior B hockey club staved off elimination Monday with a 3-0 win over the Ridge Meadows Flames, putting their series at 3-2. They aim to equalize the series tonight in Maple Ridge. Ryan Panichelli’s goal 37 seconds into the middle period proved to be the difference. Julian Klaric and James Benz also tallied. Goalie Nicholas Taylor made 28 saves to pick up the shutout. If the Panthers win tonight, a seventh game will be played in Port Moody on Friday.

Valley bronze a springboard for Rapids Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com Like Anne Hathaway’s Oscar night quick clothing change regimen, the Riverside Rapids have had to make swift adjustments and shift gears repeatedly during the AAA senior girls Fraser Valley championship tournament. The Rapids overcame illness and a bout of cold hands to fight off the deliberate attempts of their rivals and emerge third overall with a 61-34 victory over the Maple Ridge Ramblers on Saturday. Shaking off the remnants of a chilly shooting performance in their 77-61 semifinal setback to Brookswood a day earlier, Riverside rolled up its sleeves and went straight to work against the Ramblers. Beginning with a sense of hunger, the PoCo crew staked out an early lead and held course the rest of the game — leading 39-11 at the half and holding Maple Ridge under 20 points for three quarters. Having fallen to the Ramblers in league play, the squad was well aware of what they needed to do to stay on the right side of the scoring ledger. “We’ve played them before and lost to them and since then, we wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again,” remarked Grade 11 point guard Michelle Spacek. “We came out hard and hit our shots, which is what we need to do all the time.” The coach concurred. “I think the kids wanted to finish the tournament on a strong note, and that’s what they did,” Rapids head coach Paul Langford said. Megan Sherwood led the way with 16 points, while Laiken Cerenzie chipped in 15. Getting the Valley No. 3 seed provides them a little easier opening round draw — although no team can be taken lightly. Langford rates Claremont and South Kamloops as probably the expected favourites at this year’s B.C.s, which begin March 9 at Capilano University. “We need to get on a roll earlier and defend a lot better [and] just be more consistent in our own play.” It was a lesson well-served by Brookswood in the semifinal. Although they kept pace with the Langley team for much of the game, a rash of poor shooting hampered Riverside’s rally attempts. They found success on only 17 of 89 shots. “That’s not going to beat anyone,” Langford noted. “When we struggle is when we’re not shooting. When we shoot 22 per cent, it’s really hard to win,” Spacek added. The lack of shooting success also highlighted the Rapids’ size disadvantage — with Brookswood holding a healthy edge in the rebound battles. “When we’re missing the hoop our small size becomes a bigger problem,” the coach said. The Terry Fox Ravens, meanwhile, were hoping to join their PoCo rivals at the B.C.s, but needed to defeat Kitsilano yesterday (past The NOW’s deadline) in a wildcard contest. The Ravens eliminated Centennial with a 76-66 victory last week, but were blasted 73-33 by Elgin Park to put their season in trouble. In true Fox fashion, the team rallied to clip Yale 5644 to capture the final wildcard spot. Earning positions on the Valley all-star team were Cerenzie and Spacek from Riverside and Fox’s Katie Devaney. • The Terry Fox Ravens need one win to guarantee their seat at the B.C. AAA Senior Boys Basketball championships, March 15-19 in Langley. The Gleneagle Talons, meanwhile, were staring at a one-shot chance of staying afloat.

For the second year in a row, Port Moody’s Arash Farhadian pinned a gold medal at the provincial high school wrestling championships. The Grade 11 grappler moved up a weight class and repeated last year’s feat to record the only contested gold medal for District 43 wrestlers. Farhadian bested MEI’s Dave Sharma in the final to take the 41-kilogram title. Last year, he won the 38kg crown. “Arash won fairly convincingly. The first round was close, both wrestlers were very cautious and it came down to a clinch,” Port Moody coach Selwyn Tam said. “The second round was dominated by Arash. The only offensive attacks came from Arash while Dave Sharma sat back and tried to counter.” It was the first meeting of the year for the two, who fought each other a number of

times a year ago. “They’ve wrestled many times before… Last year Arash went 3-1 against him, and Sharma is a three-time medallist now.” Because there were few wrestlers in 41 kg division, Farhadian spent most of the year battling rivals in higher weight classes. In the end it paid off, Tam said. “This has made him become smarter. Last year he could attack and not worry about getting countered,” the coach noted. “This year he had to be more strategic because the opponents were bigger and stronger.” Terry Fox’s Michelyn Bell was named the 90-plus kg girls champion, having no one to wrestle. Collecting a silver in girls 51 kg was Pinetree’s Karly Adair. Not seeded among the top four entering the B.C.s, the

Grade 11 Adair climbed past her rivals and scored a late decision in the semifinal to advance to the gold medal match. There, she faced heavily favoured Carolyn Failanga of St. Pat’s. “She was very pleased with her performance as she has had to fight through several significant injuries this year,” father and coach Bill Adair said. “If I had to say what her strength is, it would probably be that she is truly tough. She has dealt with her injuries and has been able to focus on the task at hand.” Capturing bronze in their respective divisions were Gleneagle’s Farid Alizadeh, in boys 45 kg, and Terry Fox’s Alana White, in girls 90 kg. His heater has hit 89 miles per hour, causing a lot of swing-and-misses at the plate. Having worked hard to harness his pitching arsenal, Coquitlam’s Matt Trimble is starting to turn heads as well as freeze bats. Trimble is in Florida this week with the Canadian Junior National baseball team, partaking in a spring training exhibition that will give Canada’s best 18-and-under players some sunny exposure against pro competition. For the six-foot-two lefthander, getting invited to the camp was a bit of a surprise. “I’ve always worked towards it, being part of the national program,” Trimble said. “I was at the Canada Cup last August when [national team coach Greg] Hamilton was making his list for the fall team, and I wasn’t asked. “I was [disappointed] but I just kept at it, so when I was called I was surprised.” He got the call in early January just when his high school basketball team, the Terry Fox Ravens, was playing in the Legal Beagle tournament. Trimble then kicked his pre-season training up a notch. “It’s going to be pretty exciting, and right after the call I started throwing.” Canada began its schedule in St. Petersburgh, Fla., on Saturday, with Trimble throwing two innings against a squad from the professional development league on Sunday. He is also slated to toss the first two innings today in an intersquad game, before he wraps up

Saturday with two innings against the Netherlands. He is one of three southpaws picked for the trip. He enters his final season with the Coquitlam Reds of the B.C. Premier Baseball League eager to hone his skills, help the Reds win, and reduce his walks. Last year the Reds’ workhorse tossed 71 innings, fanning 86 batters. He posted the league’s third-best earned run average, 1.08, and issued 50 free passes. That last number is where he’s putting his focus on. “I’ve worked hard to cut down the walks, that was my big issue. The big thing was just picking up my target right away and not getting distracted and looking around.” While his fastball has hit 89, it usually sits around 84-85 miles per hour, and he also brings a changeup and curveball to the mound. His recent addition, which is still a workin-progress, is a slider. “I’ve had a little trouble with it, it’s a difficult pitch. I tend to slow my arm down but I’m improving.” Next fall he’ll take his arsenal to UBC where he’ll join the T-birds program, one that sent current Kansas City Royals starter Jeff Francis to the majors. But first comes the Ravens’ basketball season, and then the Reds. There’s always a number to improve on, a new goal to reach, he noted. “I want to have a zero ERA, I think I can reach that,” said Trimble, who finished 8-2 last year. “I have to work on it. I also want to help the Reds win provincials — it’s been a few years since we’ve had playoff success.”
