Douglas U-Pass facing delays Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Douglas College students may need to wait until September before they get on board with the U-Pass program. A coalition of 11 public post-secondary schools is negotiating with TransLink and the provincial government to determine contract details for the reduced-rate universal transit passes. All eligible students will pay a $30 monthly fee for the transit pass, which provides access to SkyTrain, bus and SeaBus services as well as discounts on West Coast Express. Blaine Jensen, vice-president of educational services at Douglas College, said there are still outstanding concerns with the contract. He wouldn’t, however, provide information on any specific issues since negotiations are ongoing. “I can say that we have resolved many, many concerns. We’re down to the last very few. Those concerns really have financial implications for the institutions,” said Jensen, who chairs the coalition. “So without resolution of those concerns, the institutions would then wind up potentially having to subsidize the program with tuition and government dollars, which is not part of the process.” TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie said some schools have signed interim contracts, so students at those schools are already using the U-Pass. “It’s worked well for them. Coquitlam plans to relocate geese John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com More signs and plants, increased public education and a one-way ticket out of town could be Coquitlam council’s response to last summer’s unprecedented surge in Canada geese at Como Lake Park. The city’s sports, recreation and culture committee endorsed a plan Monday that will, among other things, see staff moving dozens, if not hundreds, of flightless juvenile and adult geese out of the park and into a provincial wildlife management area. Monday’s move comes in response to an influx of geese in the park last summer, when a city-hired contractor counted 175 of the birds in June and 193 in July, a time when most geese are molting, or shedding, their feathers. The concerns around a high number of geese include increased fecal coliform counts, the potential for a severe disease outbreak among other species and the degradation of amenities and trails for

park users. The problem isn’t with the roughly 35 geese that are native the park, however, as the issues tend to arise when other goose populations move into the park specifically for molting in the early summer. “The problems with fecal coliforms and the problems with the nutrient levels in the lake are caused by the overabundance of non-resident geese that land there for the molting season because there’s food, there’s grass and they get fed the first time they’re there,” Mayor Richard Stewart said Tuesday. One of the main thrusts of the city’s strategy involves adding signs and public education to dissuade people from feeding geese and other wildlife. “I have good memories of doing that as a kid,” said Coun. Doug Macdonell, chair of the sports, recreation and culture committee. “It appears to be such a family friendly exercise and it’s a fun thing to do. You don’t realize at the time the damage that you are doing, because you’re having fun as a family, but it’s not the right thing to do at all.”

The relocation of the geese is expected to cost about $2,600, while planting shrubs along the lake’s shoreline — at a cost of $4,500 over three years — also figures into the city’s plan. One of the alternatives the city was examining involved hiring a contractor to addle, or shake, the eggs, though the committee opted for relocation instead. “If we addle 10 eggs or 20 eggs, it’s not going to change the problem,” said Coun. Selina Robinson, vice-chair of the committee. “If we’re going to spend the money, I think we should spend it on the relocation program and get rid of the problem. But I would also like to see multilingual signs, at least in Korean and Chinese as well. And maybe we need to step up our bylaw presence a little bit more in June or July and make it a focal point around letting people know that you cannot feed the animals.” The committee’s recommendations around Como Lake Park will be put to a vote by all council members at a March 21 meeting.

he cities of Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam are joining a host of other Metro Vancouver municipalities in calling on residents to purchase proper licences for their four-legged friends. A joint press release issued by eight Lower Mainland cities encourages residents to educate themselves around licensing protocols, while at the same time reminding dog owners that getting a licence is a bylaw requirement. “Dog licenses help protect your pet by providing an easy-to-identify dog tag and registration with the Coquitlam Animal Shelter,” said Sarah Bull, Coquitlam’s supervisor of licensing and animal services. “So if your pet is lost anywhere in the world, the fastest way to reunite that dog with the owner is with the dog tag and the licence.” On top of the peace of mind offered by licences, the licence fees help finance various animal control and protections services, as well as providing money for off-leash dog parks and other canine-specific amenities, cities say. “Then there’s the other business that you don’t see, which is the fact that we in Port Coquitlam have an animal control officer who’s dealing every

bylaw services. The timing of the press release coincides with specific dog licensing initiatives currently happening in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam. In Coquitlam, bylaw staffers are reminding residents that discounted licences will only be offered until April 1.

Between now and the end of the month, yearly licences cost $27 for spayed or neutered dogs, though that price jumps to $42 after April 1. In the PoCo context, bylaw officers are currently going door-to-door to remind people of the need for licences, while offering them the chance to purchase one on the spot. “[Dog licences] are the mechanism that proves most useful in reuniting wayward animals with their loving families,” said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart. Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam each have specific bylaws requiring dogs to be licensed: the PoCo bylaw states that all dogs six months old or older must be licensed, while that number jumps to seven months under Coquitlam’s bylaws. Port Moody’s bylaw requires all dogs over the age of four months to be licensed. Licensing fees vary in each municipality depending on whether dogs have been spayed or neutered. the middle of the day,” Holden said. “With the next generation staying at home longer, it adds that other element of stress, where this so-called sandwich generation is caring for elderly parents and still has kids living in the basement. “There’s a range of areas of stress, but what people talk

about most is the challenges of negotiating with their parents. There is an element often described as stubbornness, which is so understandable as elderly people want to maintain their independence. They are aware that certain facilities are leaving them, and it’s a scary thought to give up control of your life.” Holden suggests planning early and initiating conversations on tough topics such as finances, wills and third-party services. “A lot of people have an impossible time even bringing up the subject of introducing home care gradually into their parents’ lives. This is a booming industry, growing massively. There are really good consultants out there who can teach you negotiating tips and strategies. You start simple. Maybe it’s somebody coming in to mow the lawn or cook the odd meal,” she said. “There are as many different situations as there are

people, but there are commonalities that we really feel like we help people with, and it’s really satisfying.” That’s why Holden has been hosting workshops for the past three years alongside local experts on legal issues, real estate and services available for seniors. At the upcoming Port Moody seminars, Holden will offer advice on how to organize parents’ finances and daily banking. As well, notary public Keri Martens will explain legal options and responsibilities. Sharon Scramstad of Home Instead will speak about how to plan the progression of home care services available to parents. Gayle Carter will help negotiate with parents about real estate and other issues. And Home to Home’s Stephanie Chan will help navigate the system of assisted living facilities and levels of care. “We keep the presentation

light and informal, focused on stories and tips,” Holden said. “The idea is that the people in the audience will know for themselves where, specifically, they need to start. Then they can come to us, and we all work quite holistically together. “If everybody can get together and agree on them, then it’s done … I’m sure the students are all eager to go.” Meanwhile, Jensen said the focus is now on having the U-Pass available for the fall. “We wanted this for our students. The benefit to it is great. We just don’t have a contract yet. Also, as a coalition of institutions, we felt that we didn’t want a lot of interim agreements. Let’s get to the right agreement. Let’s make sure that it’s there for students, that it’s fair for institutions and get it ready for everybody to implement.”

It’s really all about how to effectively manage the program going forward and how we all participate in that management process. There’s a mechanism there that could get the passes to students earlier than September, and I can’t speak as to why the schools didn’t take that route.” These interim contracts are in place until Aug. 31, as is the existing U-Pass program at several other schools. Students at these schools will need to hold a referendum to approve the new program, which will mean higher U-Pass rates at UBC and SFU. Hardie, however, wouldn’t discuss potential implementation costs to institutions. “There’s contracts that are being put together where we all share the variety of things that need to be shared to make the program work well and to be sustainable. TransLink certainly has, since the very first U-Passes … shouldered quite a large subsidy to keep the program going and we’ll continue to do so,” Hardie said. “But going forward, we’d like to have a situation where we meet the criteria for the same program and everybody pays the same rate. To do that, we need the same contract for all schools and we need everybody to participate in keeping the program sustainable.” The new contract could be ready within a couple of weeks, Hardie added. “It’s subject to the work that’s being done by the partners on it right now. Our view is that there are very few outstanding issues,” Hardie said.

Spring into a new Season

Mosaic Avenue Development has applied to rezone large vacant properties from 843 to 913 Dominion Ave. to allow for a 114-unit townhouse development requiring a land rezoning to townhouse 3 from agricultural. The proposed project will consist of 16 buildings with three-storey units in clusters of four to 10 units per building. There would be six phases of construction, and the amenity building and playground are included in the first phase. The units range in size from 955 to 1,455 square feet, and consist of one, two, three bedroom and den arrange-

Port Coquitlam development services director Laura Lee Richard noted in her report to council that the land is currently zoned agricultural and was previously exempted from the Agricultural Land Reserve. The project exceeds the maximum allowable units by 31, which can be addressed under density bonusing charges of $12,571 to the developer to compensate the city per additional unit. “I’m a little bit concerned about the size,” Coun. Mike Forrest said, noting the proposed rezoning found favour with the committee. “It’ll be interesting to see the comments about the size from the community, if there are any.” Coun. Darrell Penner said he was “pleased” to see projects that involve green building program standards. Port Coquitlam council unanimously accepted the smart growth committee report.

‘The almighty dollar rules’ I have lived in Port Coquitlam starting this year for 51 years. I live behind Burke Mountain, or should I say in front of it, so when they cut all the trees down to build that mess of houses, condos, etc., where did they expect the wildlife to go? My children had the opportunity of enjoying Burke Mountain as it was. They hiked there, and my oldest son had a job at the gun club setting clay pigeons. My youngest son was married at the gun To The club, so I, and they, have many good memories. I do so wish they had left it as it was and designated it for park. How will it end?

nce upon a time, you could drop out of school, get a job at the local mill (at least if you were male) and support a

family. Those days are long gone, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But what’s replacing them is starting to look more and more like the death of the middle class. Similar to a mosaic, this new image is being formed by bits and pieces that, on their own, don’t mean much. Put them together, though, and the picture becomes clearer. Here’s a few of those bits: • The Conference Board of Canada warns that higher food prices are here to stay. “Many of the factors driving prices higher are permanent,” Michael Burt, associate director of forecasting and analysis at the Ottawabased group, told a reporter, “and this means that consumers should expect their grocery bill to gobble up an increasing share of their budgets.” • Gas prices? They’re rising, too. Gasbuddy listed them between 128.5 and 131.1 cents per litre in Coquitlam yesterday. • At a new city-run pool in Penticton, there will be a two-tiered wage structure: previously hired lifeguards will earn $23 an hour, while new ones will make just $14.50 an hour. Fewer costs for taxpayers? Yes, but also fewer jobs that pay a livable wage. With stagnant wages the norm and wellpaying jobs harder to come by, it’s little wonder Canadians’ debt-to-disposable income ratio now stands at more than 145 per cent. Add in the fact that most of us don’t have access to a pension other than CPP — and many have failed to save for retirement — and the picture looks bleak. The days when any hard-working Canadian could own a home and a car, take vacations and support a family on a livable wage (or two) without being mired in debt seem unreal. Almost like a fairy tale — but this one might not have a happy ending.

Sort out once and for all the uncertainty over BC Ferries rates. There are three solutions to the problem: increase the government subsidy, increase rates or cut services. Clark’s insistence that the $25 million that’s needed to keep fares down can be found within BC Ferries administration is nonsense. She has to make the tough call here, and it will probably mean raising the subsidy in some way. Clark has made it clear she intends to bring about real change to her government. That would mean distancing herself from some of the policies that were near and dear to Campbell. Tackling these 10 issues would go a long way towards showing she’s serious.

Dogs and trails: two very different views Re: “Keep dogs on-leash to prevent scenes like this one,” and “Unleashed dogs a danger,” letters to the editor, Friday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, March 2. Every Tri-Cities dog owner knows their responsibility to leash their dog in shared public trails or use numerous designated off-leash areas. Leash bylaws protect everyone. Off-leash dog owners have no recourse if their dog is injured while its owner willfully allows it to harm others. Something’s seriously awry when trail users find it necessary to carry whistles, cellphones, police batons, pepper spray and bullwhips for protection from dangerous off-leash activity. It is never wrong to defend yourself and your loved ones from assault if required. I fully support park users in protecting themselves and applaud their resistance to those who would intimidate, limit or jeopardize safe trail use and enjoyment of Tri-Cities parkland. Strongly resist others’ attempts to violate your safety, privacy, personal boundaries or right to peaceful park enjoyment. Tell offenders to leave the park at once. I was assaulted by two off-leash pit bulls in PoCo’s Fox Park, following major abdominal surgery, with a bandaged open incision, which the dogs were clawing against as they jumped up on me while I protected myself by shoving them away. I had been calmly directing the dog owner, a woman, to stop tearing off large park tree branches and to leash her animals, stating that it is not an off-leash dog park, pointing out the nearby playground equipment with its posted on-leash sign and inviting her to visit the new off-leash dog park on nearby Shaughnessy Street.

She became very angry, but leashed her dogs, stating that I didn’t like her, that everyone does this, to which I replied that I didn’t like what she was doing, that off-leash activity requires its own space and that people value and respect this children’s play park for what it is. Hearing raised voices, my neighbours, all parents like me whose children use Fox Park’s playground equipment, quickly appeared and formed a protective phalanx around me, as the woman’s boyfriend shouted obscenities in my face and made threatening gestures. When neighbours offered to call the RCMP, the dog owners vanished, like all bullies and cowards do in the face of authority. Public safety is not debatable, so don’t raise your blood pressure engaging with aggressive To The bullies; keep cool, call law enforcement authorities, press charges, do what’s required. I’m tired of bullies. Be prepared. Travel in pairs or groups for protection and use available technology to full advantage. It is a powerful deterrent to point a camera-equipped cellphone at an offending dog owner whose dog is charging, biting or threatens you, while firmly directing them to control their animal on-leash, an act which can quickly defuse a situation from escalating further. State you are calling RCMP and bylaw enforcement if their dog attacks and that you will press charges, then do that. If you don’t have a cell, borrow someone else’s; people are pleased to share in an emergency. In any case, don’t let offenders evade consequences for harming you or your dog. Ask for the dog owner’s identity by driver’s licence, home address or licence plate. If refused, follow them if they leave the scene to get this or authorities don’t have vital ID to act on. several years ago in Coquitlam’s Mundy Park’s urban forest trails, ideal for community fitness pursuits. Despite this, prevailing political will supported off-leash activity in a protected wildlife sanctuary, whose high wildlife values preclude the presence of off-leash dogs. Today, many uncontrolled off-leash dogs are at large, unchecked, in all major park trails as a result, a nasty ripple effect, creating havoc and causing Tri-Cities park trail users to take up arms in selfdefense, particularly cyclists and runners who are moving quickly, triggering a chase response in Editor dogs. Athletic pursuits deserve council’s strong protection, and I need to know my son is safe on Mundy trails. Bad policy can be fixed, and positive change started last year with establishment of a new $80,000 off-leash area on Mundy’s east border off Mariner Way, which dog owners petitioned for years for at this location. Now there is no reason to have an unleashed dog anywhere else in Mundy Park. On Coquitlam’s November 2011 election ballot, I would dearly love to see a binding referendum question asking taxpayers if they prefer to return dogs to being on-leash at all times in Mundy trails. Don’t you think it’s time for a change? dog and sometimes without. We use a bell when we are riding bikes to alert people so they have time to collect their dogs and give bikers a free pass. The trail is not designated for bikes only; it is for everybody to enjoy nature. Sometimes dogs chase after our bikes too; no harm done. If a dog comes to us jumping, we are happy that an animal wants to say “Hi,” and we pet it. In over 20 years, we have never been bitten by a dog on this or any other trail. We would rather meet many dogs jumping on the trail than one angry person on a bike. MLA Iain Black

Tri-Cities MLA out of cabinet The Tri-Cities is no longer represented in the provincial cabinet. Iain Black, MLA for Port Moody-Coquitlam, has been downgraded to parliamentary secretary for public transportation to the minister of transportation and infrastructure. Blair Lekstrom holds the position of minister. Under former premier Gordon Campbell, Black was minister of labour. The change was announced Monday afternoon, after Liberal leader Christy Clark was sworn in as premier. Clark created a smaller cabinet, trimmed down to 17 seats from Campbell’s 24. Her three leadership rivals, Kevin Falcon, George Abbott and Mike de Jong, all have seats. Harry Bloy, MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed, is also in the new cabinet. He was the only MLA to publicly back Clark during her leadership run. Black, along with fellow Tri-Cities MLA Doug Horne, publicly supported Falcon, who is now deputy premier.

Tap water gaining, poll shows Eighty-five per cent of Metro Vancouver residents turn to the tap, not a bottle, when they want a drink of water, a new poll indicates. The percentage of people who primarily drink tap rather than bottled water grew during the past two years, while the percentage who prefer bottled water decreased. In 2008, a total of 74 per cent of those polled said they consumed tap water as their main drinking source. That number grew to 85 per cent for the recent survey, which polled more than 800 Metro Vancouver residents. The latest poll was conducted in January of this year, according to Metro Vancouver.

PoCo signs on to growth plan Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com The hard line between where people live and where they work was not enough to deter Port Coquitlam’s stamp of approval. Council signed on to Metro Vancouver’s regional growth strategy Monday, after the document was sent to municipalities for endorsement according to the Local Government Act. The regional board has given second reading to the “Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping Our Future” strategy, which maps out land-use designations for the region in the spirit of sustainable planning. Coun. Brad West said the city’s smart growth committee recommended the strategy be approved by council, as it “offers a balance” between a municipality’s autonomy and the coordinated approach to growth in the region. The strategy would be further tailored to PoCo-specific plans, he said, in a regional context statement that will be completed within the next two years. The strategy identifies five goals for the region and approaches for each of those goals complete with actions for the regional body, member municipalities and government agencies like the province, Agricultural Land Commission and TransLink. The goals include creating a compact urban area, supporting a sustainable economy, protecting the environment and responding to climate change impacts, developing complete communities and supporting sustainable transportation options. One of the concepts that arose, according to a staff report, is the idea of creating an “urban containment boundary” that limits where new growth must occur unless otherwise approved through a defined process.

There is also room in the strategy for future tweaking. “Special study areas” are defined as locations where future land-use amendments will be needed. For example, PoCo’s staff report states that the agricultural areas east of the urban containment boundary north of Prairie Avenue may be affected by the future alignment of the Fremont Connector, making it a special study area. Coun. Mike Forrest said PoCo has followed the strategy’s former incarnation — the livable region strategic plan — while other Metro Vancouver municipalities have taken time to warm to the idea. “There were so many places that didn’t follow the planning ideas of the region,” he said. “I hope we can get more municipalities on board with the planning end of this thing, rather than just paying it lip service.” Forrest noted a bit of concern over the protection of industrial land throughout the region. Locally, the Mary Hill, Meridian and Dominion Triangle areas fall under the industrial designation of urban. “The urban containment boundary, in order to do what it says, is supposed to contain urban areas and not have sprawl,” he said, noting the challenges ahead for the Dominion Triangle. “There are things that are very important for us in the City of Port Coquitlam in here.” Mayor Greg Moore said regional planning strategies have changed over five years and recognized how some municipalities have done a “poor job protecting industrial land.” But he suggested areas like the Dominion Triangle, while zoned industrial, could incorporate multiple uses as planning undergoes an “evolution” toward clean and quiet uses. “I agree that the bulk of the plans are excellent from a regional government standpoint,” he said, “but I also feel some parts are watered down.”

PoCo expands green cart plan The City of Port Coquitlam will extend curbside green cart pickup to multi-family complexes on April 18, but is encouraging interested sites to sign up now. The expansion of the green cart program will allow 7,000 multi-family units in Port Coquitlam to join 11,000 single-family homes in recycling all food scraps, food-soiled papers and plant and yard trimmings, according to a press release. To help guide complexes through the sign-up process, a multi-family green cart handbook is available through www.portcoquitlam.ca/greencart and in printed format at City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy St.), the City Hall annex (2002564 Shaughnessy St., next to the BMO) and the operations centre (1737 Broadway St). Most multi-family complexes in PoCo now pay for private pickup of garbage and recycling — and, based on the Metro Vancouver average, divert only 16 per cent of their household waste away from the landfill. The homes that currently receive green cart pickup in Port Coquitlam are diverting 62 per cent, and climbing, the city says. The green cart program will only be available on a complex-wide basis (no individual units). Complexes will receive one 240-litre green cart for every 20 units, and each unit in the complex will see a $12 charge on their annual tax bill. This cart-per-unit ratio will accommodate all food scraps and food-soiled papers, based on past experience; complexes that wish to also recycle their yard trimmings may request additional carts for $76.41 per cart per year. The onetime $50 service fee for additional carts is being waived for multi-family green carts in 2011 and 2012. Complexes that make the most of their green carts may find they can reduce their garbage pickup frequency — similar to how the city switched

to alternate-week garbage pickup in early 2010. This would help them avoid the ongoing increases in landfill disposal fees (up another 18 per cent in 2011 to $97 per tonne) and take advantage of the lower disposal fees for green cart materials ($53 per tonne). Requirements for signup include a letter from the strata council or, in private buildings, from the owner or

representative, plus provision of a suitable storage area for carts. Each complex must also assign a “green cart champion” to serve as a liaison with the city and an onsite resource for residents. Superheroes meet improv in new show From classics to cartoons, this performance has it all

he Second Storey Theatre comedy troupe will use audience participation and little else in rolling out its presentation of It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s BLANK! in Port Coquitlam starting this week. Running Friday and Saturday nights from March 18 to April 9, each hour-and-a-half performance begins with cast members drawing the audience into the superhero world by reciting “It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s …” From there, the audience shapes everything else. “As a kid, there’s nothing more fun than tying a towel around your neck John Kurucz and running around the backyard so you can fly like Superman,” wrote Russ Brummer, the show’s creator, in an e-mail to The NOW. “This show brings back that excitement and wonder of childhood in a hilarious improvised format. It’s a show that’s definitely appealing to all ages.” The show’s cast features PoCo-based comedians Graham Myers, Jeff Penner and Jennifer Pielak, as well as Daniel Chai, Jennifer Perrin, Allison Chisholm, Dylan Jenken, Kasia Gabinska and Jamieson McCormack. Pianist Kevin Wong will head up the latest instalment of the Joan West Memorial Concert benefit series with a performance at Coquitlam’s Our Lady of Fatima Church on Saturday, March 19. An accomplished soloist, chamber musician and piano teacher, Wong’s repertoire for the evening will include music by the likes of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin, on top of tunes from the film Fantasia 2000 and Tom and Jerry cartoons. The event is meant as a fundraiser to help local youth attend a nine-day religious pilgrimage this summer in Spain. Tickets cost $20, and are available at the church prior to the performance.

Port Coquitlam’s Joel Ballard has landed a part in an upcoming multimedia production of George Orwell’s prophetic view of the future. Presented by The Virtual Stage Theatre Company and Langara College’s Studio 58 theatre troupe, 1984 begins its week-long run at The Cultch in Vancouver starting March 24. Ballard will be playing the part of Parsons in the production, which documents a bleak world of constant surveillance and dystopia. Running through April 3, the show costs $28. Do you know what art is?

It’s an age-old question that likely offers up distinctly different answers depending on whom you ask. A new exhibit at PoCo’s Leigh Square entitled What is Art? An Exploration of Meaning features artists Meg Lee, Chris Collacott, Lawrence McDonald and students from Langara College asking that very question through the use of Facebook updates, household paint and even microwave dinners. Running through April 11, the exhibit not only examines what is considered art, but also asks who exactly is qualified to make that judgment call. Lee’s inclusion in the exhibit covers off on her style of painting called Daubism, while Collacott, a Port Moody-based photographer, specializes in highly detailed fine art prints of nature, architecture and cityscapes. McDonald’s photographs are presented as QR-encoded pieces, a type of geometric abstract painting, and the Langara students will bridge the gap between architecture, industrial and interior design and graphic communication design. The exhibit is free of charge.

Crossroads Review

Spring has arrived and with it comes the invitation for new beginnings and new growth. What better way to celebrate this new season of your life than with a full moon walk at the Crossroads Hospice Labyrinth Healing Garden. Since June 2009 the positive public feedback from the monthly full moon walks has shown that this garden is indeed a cherished tool for peace and reﬂection. Its design is intended to create a space for meditation and healing for anyone visiting the garden and walking its path. For thousands of years, all around the world, labyrinths have been used as tools for self-reﬂection; helping to stimulate creativity and intuition. The unicursal (single) path, walked with mindful intention, leads the participant to the centre and then back out again. Labyrinths often are symbols of life’s journey and transformation.

Illuminated by the sun and reﬂecting this light back to the earth the moon provides a powerful light in the darkness. Many cultures see the full moon as a representation of spiritual power, wholeness and strength.

During the walk participants enter the garden through the cedar arbour and walk the single paved path, inlaid with 20 basal stepping stones, past a wide variety of plants that were chosen for their beauty and sustainability. Following the path back out again completes the walk. Although an integral part of Crossroads Hospice Society’s grief and bereavement programs, this healing garden is designed to be a place that anyone can come to unwind from their busy life. For several years I experienced pain in my hip which spread to my lower back and made my leg ache. It would clear up with time but each reoccurrence became worse and lasted longer. Talks deal with addiction, alcoholism There are three sessions remaining in the winter 2011 SHARE Family & Community Services Society alcohol and drug addiction education series. Tonight (Wednesday, March 16), the topic is drinking, drugs and driving — how the new laws affect you. Blood alcohol levels will be discussed, as well as how drugs impair judgment. On Wednesday, March 23, the topic is

The final session, on Wednesday, March 30, will deal with Stage 2 recovery — life in the future. The Port Moody Black Panthers ventured to Abbotsford yesterday (past The NOW’s deadline) to battle the Pilots in Game 7 of their Pacific International Junior B Hockey League semifinal. The two teams have gone through a physical and grinding series, a series the Panthers at one point held in their paws with a 3-1 lead. After back-to-back Abbotsford wins, the hope is the momentum could be reversed. In Game 6 on Monday, Port Moody trailed 4-0 early in the second period before unlocking its claws and striking back. Tyler Basham and Cam Patterson, the latter on the powerplay, cut the deficit to one with 39 minutes left. Unfortunately, Patterson would be tagged for a hitfrom-behind penalty minutes later that saw him tossed from the game. In the third, James Benz closed the gap to one with 10:15 to play, but the Panthers couldn’t bury the equalizer — despite many chances. “[Abbotsford] is a good hockey club and we’ve had to learn to play playoff hockey,” said Port Moody head coach Ron Johnson. “We were all over them in the third period and had the momentum but couldn’t put the last one in.” In Game 5, the Pilots cruised to a 7-1 victory. If the Panthers prevail, they will play the winner of the Delta-Richmond series. The start to the league final will depend upon the finalists — with the series likely including a Game 2 on Saturday, 7:45 p.m. in Port Moody.

The Riverside Rapids ended their season in fifth place, secured Saturday by edging the Argyle Pipers 76-73 at the B.C. AAA senior girls basketball championships. In a program where the year always starts with no ceiling to its potential, falling short of a top-three finish for the first time in four years could be considered a disappointment. Still, as the dust settled and the tears dried, optimism for the future is the byword in the Rapids camp. It was evident in their final match, where Riverside saw a 10-point lead after one quarter reduced to four at the half. After hitting seven of 10 field goal attempts in the first quarter, the Rapids’ shooters began to falter — succeeding on just seven of 23 field shots over the next two frames. It proved to be the theme of the tourney. Argyle entered the last quarter with a 59-58 edge, but the PoCo crew spun that around, thanks to clutch treys by Laiken Cerenzie and Michelle Spacek. That sea change was assisted by some big plays from Grade 11 forward Megan Sherwood, who would lead the team with 23 points and four steals before fouling out with 4:25 to play. From there, the Pipers poured it on and erased an eight-point deficit to make it 71-70 with 2:06 remaining. That momentum seemed to hit a brick wall, as the Rapids defence and five missed Argyle shots put the ball back in Riverside’s hands. Natalie Carkner and Cerenzie hit their foul shots as the clock ticked down, locking up a final victory. “The girls were disappointed to not get further,” said Rapids coach Paul Langford. “We can look at the final [where W.J. Mouat beat Claremont 69-64] and say we beat both of those teams. We were close but didn’t get there. “You’ve got to look at the journey. AAA Boys Basketball championships in Langley. The Coquitlam school won the initial tip-off and didn’t look back, blasting the Prince George Polars 73-35. Clan collect first win at Beedie Tom Berridge sports@thenownews.com Simon Fraser University christened its new softball park with a pair of wins in its doubleheader debut in NCAA Division II women’s softball last week. SFU earned its first-ever victory at Beedie Field with a 5-3 decision over Western Oregon. The win was also the Clan’s first-ever as a member of the Great Northwest conference. They repeated the feat in the second game, pulling out a come-frombehind 3-2 victory. “It was great that Keith Beedie was here and able to see this game,” said SFU coach Mike Renney in press release. “We are a young team this season and are going to make mistakes, and there were some nerves with

this being the first game in our new home. But I was pleased with how well we responded.” In the opener, SFU erased a threerun deficit by scoring two runs in the fifth inning off the bats of Leah Riske and Brittany Mayers. Mayers also knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the sixth. Coquitlam’s Cara Lukawesky went seven innings for the win, striking out seven batters, while giving up a pair of home runs to Western Oregon. The righthanded Lukawesky entered the season opener looking to build on an impressive rookie season, where she posted a 1.83 earned run average and a 5-1 record. In the nightcap, SFU freshman Kelsie Hawkins earned her first career victory, pitching all seven innings with nine strikeouts. SFU again rallied, this time from

a 2-0 deficit. Lauren Mew and Carly LePoutre were both batted home in a score-tying bottom of the third. The score remained deadlocked until the sixth inning, when Mayers scored the deciding run from third base, stealing home on a passed ball. The squad ended its first weekend at Beedie Field with Western Oregon returning the favour. SFU fell 3-2 and 6-3 in the doubleheader. “(Western Oregon) did to us today what we did yesterday, and the difference was they made adjustments and we didn’t respond in kind,” added Renney. In the second game, SFU held a brief 2-0 lead before Western Oregon scored six times in the sixth to even the four-game series. SFU travels to Bellingham tomorrow for a doubleheader against Western Washington. Their next home game is March 25 against Northwest Nazarene.

Cara Maltese and Jeff Thiel racked up silver medals at the WorkSafe BC Speed Skating championships last week in PoCo. The members of the Port Coquitlam Lightning Club put up quick times in a meet that saw many fleet finishes. Maltese took second in the 12 year old girls age division, while Thiel placed second in the 30-35 men’s masters category. As well as a provincial championship, the competition served as a step in qualifying for the Canada West meet next week in Kelowna. Joining Maltese in earning tickets to the event were PoCo’s Teagan Rasche, 13, Andrea Stewart, 11, and Clifton Stewart, 16. The Prince George Blizzards sent a contingent of eight skaters and strided to seven medals, including three gold.

Zackery McLaren, who qualified for Canada West with a first-place showing at a BC Cup race in November, is instead heading to the Canadian Short Track championships this weekend in Montreal. McLaren attended last week’s Western Canada Cup meet in Calgary and was awarded one of three B.C. spots for 16 and 17 year old boys. Mikaela McPhail, 15, also skated in Calgary and climbed to fifth overall on the rankings list among junior B women in B.C. The other main speed skating event featured 11 and under racers at the Coastal Funale. Eight-year-old PoCo skaters Noal Hyun and Kevin Lim notched personal best times. Also posting positive results were Graham Dowdie, Jerry Fang, Alisa Joung, Eric Parsons and Ciaran Scott.
