ames Naknakin vows he’s not the kind of coach who’ll berate or scold his players if they take risks on the court and miss shots. “You won’t see me shaking my head at you,” he tells 11 teenage boys. At a Night Hoops basketball practice in late March, Naknakin sits on the hardwood of the Ray-Cam community centre gymnasium and talks to his roster of 14- and 15-year-old boys about a star guard who tempted a low-percentage shot during an NCAA semi-ﬁnal. Tying the basketball reference to a lesson about self-esteem and conﬁdence, Naknakin said afterward, “I want them to learn they have the strength to do everything they think they can do.” Shoot, he encourages. You won’t score if you don’t. After the chat—just brief enough for Naknakin to hold court amid a squabble of tittering boys, some determined, others distracted—one of his charges mimes a jumper from the half. “What’ll you say if we miss?” Another jokes, feigns an answer: “You suck!” Naknakin is serious. “Never,” he says. “Shoot from anywhere you think you can score.”

ight Hoops celebrates its 15th season this year and the league, which counts 23 junior and senior teams for boys and girls in Vancouver and Burnaby, begins play-offs this weekend with a championship tournament April 16. The program, founded in 1996 by a Liberal MP, targets at-risk youth who are referred to the league by counsellors, teachers, social workers and probation ofﬁcers. Each senior boys team makes a Saturday night road trip to Burnaby Youth Custody

Services where they play a crew of imprisoned juvenile offenders who are rewarded with two hours of basketball for good behaviour during the week. “Constructive recreation” is the language used to describe Night Hoops, a powerful and important sports league for troubled kids and basketball lovers alike that fosters self-respect and smart decision-making along with ﬁtness and team spirit. Games are held every Friday and Saturday night, giving kids a reason to get off the streets on the weekend and leaving it up to them to make responsible decisions about their behavoiur, habits and associates. Night Hoops provides an alternative to street crime and an antidote to loneliness. Take Mark Clayton. “I wasn’t in a gang but I was hanging out

with guys who were,” says the 18-year-old Britannia graduate. His circle of would-be perps was drawn to guns, weapons and, as he put it, “Anything that could cause a person harm.” He drew the attention of police, one ofﬁcer in particular who Clayton says followed too closely for too long. He said the attention was excessive; he felt stalked, provoked and now smiles at his own commitment to work in law enforcement. “I always wanted to be a cop as a kid. I’ve had troubles in the past with some of them, but I know they’re not all ass holes,” says Clayton, who has a cautious, protective edge about him that’s expressed in calm phrases and brevity. A Grade 12 student at Britannia, he wants to turn his negative encounters with

ight Hoops is run out of neighbourhood community centres—Edmonds, Champlain Heights, Kerrisdale, Kensington, Marpole, Collingwood, Thunderbird, Strathcona, Ray-Cam, Britannia—and rivalries between competitors spring up as if NBA arch-nemesis. Coaches are drawn from the community, occasionally because they are youth service providers but increasingly because they are one-time Night Hoops players, like Naknakin who’s playing in his ﬁnal season with the Ray-Cam senior team, and who is giving back and thinking ahead. At 19, Naknakin is only a few years older than the high schoolers he’s coaching on the junior Ray-Cam team. As a coach, he chooses an on-court drill and an NCAA Butler Bulldogs reference, which he brings up during one of the seated huddles that start each practice. All Night Hoops coaches run mandatory life skills workshops and discuss indelicate and sometimes personally frightening or uncomfortably familiar topics like addiction and drug abuse, bullying, marijuana and divorce. Mixed in with violence, loss and trauma, discussions also touch on topics such as nutrition, respect, the importance of sleep and volunteerism. One coach held a session on the history of St. Patrick’s Day. In the 2010/11 Night Hoops handbook, a workshop on addiction provides coaches with discussion questions (“What are your thoughts about dependence issues?”) and lists 11 classes of drugs, from amphetamines to opiods and caffeine, and data about substance dependence as well as treatment options. Although a dated cultural reference for today’s teens, the example has relevance for anyone whose family is embroiled in domestic abuse. When Naknakin graduated from Britannia last year, he was the ﬁrst in his family with a high school diploma. One of his older brothers dealt drugs. The other was an addict. Both had been arrested. Naknakin, who’s determined to make his parents proud and set an example for his younger brother, pushed for the expansion of Night Hoops two years ago and his senior RayCam team won the championship in its inaugural year. “Sports is key for a lot of people in a community like this because it brings people together,” says Naknakin, who lives in subsidized housing adjacent to the RayCam co-operative housing development near East Hastings between Raymur and Campbell avenues. “I’ve been there my whole life. I haven left because I feel like I have an obligation to try and help change this area.” He says coaching neighbourhood kids is one way he can open their world to wider possibilities. “This area that we live in, it’s a lot of drug dealing, prostitutes, you know. It’s something that is around us 24-seven and we can’t control it but the best thing to do

There’s other things you can do to get out of this area.” Basketball, he says, offers immediate bonding and instills pride in the Ray-Cam players. The team sport bolsters self-esteem. “Often the kids are smart enough not to get involved with that sort of stuff. It shows that they hang out in the area that they come from—this is what makes a person. The people that often come from this area, they move on and they become great people because of the struggles they had

to grow up with. Night Hoops, it helps out with that a little bit more.”

he success of Night Hoops has much to do with accountability. “Players are responsible to their teammates, they’re responsible to their coaches, they’re responsible to the centre they represent,” says Steve Anderson, the program’s articulate and dedicated manager for the past six years. As a youth probation ofﬁcer, Anderson joined Night Hoops as a board member in the second year of the program.

He is respected by the players and is a constant, tireless booster for the redemptive power of sport. “Working from the corrections end, trying to correct behaviour and make changes was a lot more challenging than working in prevention, giving kids something positive to do in a constructive, supportive environment,” he says. “When you know there are people who care about you and you know there are people you’re responsible to, you’re more likely to make better decisions. And some of these guys don’t have the opportunity to play on a school team so this is their one opportunity to wear a jersey and feel proud of being part of something.” Night Hoops has no skill requirements, no one is cut and no one is charged to play. In 15 years, more than 4,000 teenaged boys and girls have donned a jersey and hundreds have worn the basketball shoes donated through a charitable program run by SportChek. Federal cuts in 2002 meant Night Hoops lost its annual $450,000 budget and now operates with $60,000 to $75,000 to pay the salaries of two part-time staff, hire referees and purchase other sports equipment and supplies. Nearly two dozen coaches are given a $500 honorarium for their work and the Vancouver park board makes available an estimated $40,000 worth of gym time through the year. Those courts, says Kavita Dhillon, are invaluable. When she showed up to coach her ﬁrst practice with the Kensington junior girls team, she spent the evening with only one player. How’d she do it? “Just from talking to girls who showed up to watch, asking, ‘Do you play? We have a team, we have space. Come on out.’” Dhillon, whose Kensington team gained more players when the girls league was reconﬁgured, came to basketball through the YMCA and was never considered at-risk, a term Anderson says is imprecise and perhaps indeﬁnable. “It wasn’t a question of keeping me off the streets at night,” says Dhillon. “I love basketball. And I wasn’t old enough to go anywhere else.” There are players like Dhillon and 11-year-old Malia Terry, who plays with girls three years older on the Britannia team, who show up on Friday and Saturday nights just because they want to work their skills, compete and be part of a team. There are others like Naknakin and Clayton who matured into their ability to make smart choices in the face of harmful or illegal temptations in search of temporary escape and diversion. Then there are the boys at Burnaby Youth Custody Services. For the 12 young offenders who are rewarded each week for good behaviour, the twohour basketball game is a welcome reprieve. The game clock stops at 9 p.m., precisely, and the boys return their borrowed jerseys, shared high tops, and prepare for overnight lock-down.

Visiting teams must clear security and can’t enter the prison without meeting strict protocols. The imprisoned teens’ transgressions range from theft to murder, and a warden reminds visitors that some of these kids have committed violent crimes. On a rubber-ﬂoored gym without a three-point line, guards are the only spectators. The jailed teens slip off their ministry-appointed Velcro shoes and elbow each other to get at a pair of donated Addidas that ﬁt. Some boys are built like men—tall, muscled, tattooed, bearded—while others are skinny with mere wisps of facial hair growing like lichen on the narrow curve of their jaw. One black-eyed scorekeeper who slouches is so pimpled, his face will be forever scarred. He mocks the racial slur inked onto the knuckles of another inmate’s hand. Another player says he has competed with the provincial basketball program; his skills are unquestionable and his attitude wins the applause of teammates and opponents alike. When he begins to cheer the visiting Britannia team, the game becomes a friendlier exchange and initial antagonism wanes. One of these jailed teens played with a Night Hoops team in South Vancouver and says he might return to that neighbourhood community centre after his sentence for theft is up in May. He laughs at the thought of visiting the prison once he’s released. “For kids on

the outs,” he says about teens who are not behind bars, “maybe they hang out with their friends, maybe they think of basketball a little more. I chose to do something else that got me into worser trouble than if I’d hung out with a different set of people.”

nderson says Night Hoops is unique. “We bridge the divide between custody and community. There’s very few programs that will involve kids both who are locked up and those who are free to do what they choose.” Anderson doesn’t know if the imprisoned boys will join a Night Hoops team when they are released from jail. That’s just how he wants it to be. “Whatever trouble they might have at home, at school, coming out of custody, those aren’t labels that we attach to them. Those are labels we want to remove and give them a reason to think of themselves differently, to think of themselves in more positive terms and of being part of a team,” he says from the sidelines of a game that saw the locked-up teens run up the score and frustrate Britannia before cooling their heels enough to turn the contest into a surprising exchange of rambunctious praise. “We don’t judge these kids on anything other than them wanting to come out and play.” mstewart@vancourier.com Twitter: @MHStewart

Went on a mind-bending trip Tuesday afternoon courtesy of COPE Coun. David Cadman. It brought me back to the time I spent a similarly mind-bending night at the Planetarium, taking in the Milky Way while soothed by the hypnotizing vibes of Pink Floyd. Or was that the Moody Blues? Whatever man—it was quite a trip. Cadman was responsible for Tuesday’s galaxy ride after he used his so-called prayer time at the beginning of the meeting to dim the lights and project a huge still image of Mother Earth on a screen at the back of the chambers. Then came the dreamy music, with the lyrics “beautiful world, beautiful world” repeated several times during the montage that seemed to go on and on and on… When it ﬁnally ended and the lights were turned on, Mayor Gregor Robertson chimed in. “Alright, please be seated,” he said. “Thanks Coun. Cadman, and as beautiful as this world is, that has to be a new record for the prayer length.” Lots of laughs. All joking aside, Cadman’s purpose here was not to entertain or create fodder for some nefarious scribe to riff on about. He told me so in a dispatch from his Black-

But… “[It was] a reasonable allocation of time to reﬂect on the risks to our planet by our collective actions and hopefully an inspiration to help modify our collective impacts while we still have time.”

If Mother Earth isn’t your thing but you still can’t get enough of what a beautiful place city hall is, this weekend is your chance to spend some quality time with Mr. Mayor and his merry bunch. In a rare weekend sitting, council will hear from people excited/upset/stoked/ worried about a proposal from a Las Vegas company to build a mega casino adjacent to B.C. Place Stadium. After three nights of public hearings in March, council is still what seems like a galaxy away from getting to the point where it will make a decision on Paragon Gaming Inc.’s proposal. That’s because more than 200 speakers registered and I’ve lost count of how many dozens are left to go. So we’ll see you Saturday at 10 a.m. And if council doesn’t hear from all the speakers by 6 p.m., we’ll see you Sunday at 1 p.m. And if you can’t make it because you actually have better things to do on your weekend, feel free to follow me on Twitter @Howellings. Seeking the pulse of the once-vibrant Non Partisan Association is proving a challenge. Having ruled this city for most of Vancouver’s 125-year history (Happy birthday!), there is now only a near-comatose body on life support in some West Side emergency ward. We are but a few weeks away from the deadline for nomination papers to be filed by NPA candidates (May 4). But it’s easier to figure out who’s not going to step up to breathe life into this failing creature than who is. Rob Macdonald, the developer who failed in his bid to super-size one of his holdings in the Downtown Eastside in exchange for social housing units, was thinking about running for mayor under the NPA banner but has been convinced otherwise. The man, whose rhetoric aimed at anyone left of Attila the Hun is harsh enough to peel paint, was encouraged (cajoled, threatened) by his friend Bob Rennie not to do it. Nothing, Rennie told me, would better serve to galvanize the current Vision administration than Macdonald’s name on the ballot. But a strong mayoral candidate is not simply preferable. It’s essential. In our at-large system where candidates are elected citywide and campaigns regularly run into the millions of dollars, it is mostly about the mayor. To find the last time a mayor didn’t carry a majority of council with him into city hall you have to go back to Mike Harcourt. And that’s because Harcourt ran as an independent. Once elected, he tap danced between the NPA on the right and COPE on the left seeking support

allengarr for his initiatives. That said, it takes more than a strong mayoral candidate and bags of cash. If history provides us with a lesson, it is this: There’s no internal party turmoil in Vision’s camp as there was in the past three administrations headed by Philip Owen then Larry Campbell and Sam Sullivan that managed to seal their electoral fate. Owen ﬁnally refused to face a nomination meeting. Campbell had a bit of a heart thingy and accepted a posting to the Senate. And Sullivan was drop-kicked into history by his own party. There’s also another problem. Despite the steady stream of breathless and typically ridiculing revelations alleging scandal from the NPA bloggers who fancy themselves the ofﬁcial opposition, there has so far been little inspiration generated to take on Mayor Gregor Robertson.

As one person who has chosen to observe rather than participate in this lemmings’ brigade this time round pointed out: There is no issue; there is no serious screw up; there is no welloiled machine to take on the party in power. There’s also a diminishing power base for the NPA as Vision has successfully pushed it out of the centre of the ﬁeld and tied up a bunch of federal Liberal operatives and the money that goes with them. This also conveniently connects Vision and Robertson into our newly minted Premier Christy Clark more clearly than the relationship that existed with Gordon Campbell. Look no further than the role played by communications guy Don Millar, the CEO with F.D. Element. He puts bread on his table by giving strategic advice to both Robertson and Clark. I’m sure there are those among the NPA who will still run, hopeful of winning next November. But we have an at-large electoral system that, unlike a ward system, seldom produces results that represents this city. It tends to be winner take all while the rest are left to grumble. The NPA is more to be pitied than censured. The party appears to have no plan, few donors and a dwindling membership. And the members are disconnected from their grass roots. They are, at this point, perceived to be so dysfunctional as to be unable to take advantage of whatever weakness their opponents in power reveal in order to represent a fair whack of folks who feel they have little or no representation at city hall. agarr@vancourier.com

Conservatives desperate to humanize Stephen Harper Powerful people often have problems with the big picture, and sometimes the horizontal hold goes completely. The Roman emperor Caligula installed his horse as a consul in the Roman senate. French queen Marie Antoinette played makebelieve, dressing up as a shepherdess and living in a fake peasant village on the grounds of the Versailles palace. Prime Minister Mackenzie King reportedly performed séances to consult his dead mother and Irish terriers for political advice. Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper jumped the shark—or rather, the whale—with his second performance of John Lennon’s hit song “Imagine.” The first time was last December, on the anniversary of Lennon’s death, when the rockin’ leader played a few bars on the piano at the annual Tory convention party. This time he went all out, singing part of the tune in a YouTube-destined duet with 10-year-old Maria Aragon. Obviously, the man could not have picked a song more opposed to his stated beliefs—religious, cultural and political— than Lennon’s 1971 hymn to secularism, socialism and world peace. It was like Judy Rebick warbling “Ballad of the Green Berets,” or Don Cherry belting out “It’s Raining Men.” Not so much funny haha as funny peculiar. Lennon said the song, which prefaced his years of New York radicalism, was “virtually The Communist Manifesto, even though I am not particularly a communist and I do not belong to any movement.” So how does a Conservative political leader publicly embrace a tune containing ideas he rejects? Three ways: bottomless cynicism, unfathomable stupidity or professional guidance. Harper’s no dummy, so I think we can rule out the second one. It seems doubtful that the Tory leader would come up with this scheme himself. Sitting down with a little girl to sing some hippie’s socialist anthem to world peace? No way. The Prime Minister’s office may be a black box to Canadian journalists, but it looks to me like someone got awfully excited about spot-welding a campaign stop to new media, boomer music and soccer mom sentimentality. Reporters usually don’t get any closer to the Prime Minister than Somali pirates to an American destroyer. Yet with all the camera flashes and shutters going off in the YouTube clip, it’s clear that this was a tightly scripted photo op. The Harperites already have their “base” onside—the evangelical crowd, the oil patch, Washington and

geoffolson Wall Street. There is little need to convince them of Conservative intentions. However, they have a public relations problem with voters in the centre, particularly women, who see Harper as a hybrid of cold fish and cold warrior, running with scissors through the social safety net and toward an ecological cliff. The Tories are clearly desperate to humanize their leader. Through years of radio play, the radical half-life of “Imagine” has settled into the afterglow of a boomer lullaby. Harper’s advisers probably thought it perfect to lull centrist voters, types who might be disposed to vote for the non-rockin’ Ignatieff. All they had to do was hitch Harper’s wagon to Maria Aragon’s YouTube-friendly star, and invite the parliamentary paparazzi for the musical charm offensive. Harper’s evangelical credentials negate the first lines of the song, “Imagine there’s no heaven/It’s easy if you try.” (If you need any convincing of the guy’s theoconservative leanings, check out Marcy MacDonald’s 2010 book The Armageddon Factor: The Rise of Christian Nationalism in Canada.) There should be no problem with a person of any faith running for election or re-election. But there’s a big problem when a little girl is used as a prop in a performance of an atheistic hymn that imagines “living life in peace” with “no possessions” and “nothing to kill and die for,” by a pious leader fronting for military expansion, foreign wars, abrogation of human rights, dismantling the public sector and rampant profiteering by private interests. Last month, the Harper government was found in contempt of parliament—the first for a Canadian leader. With the PM’s cynical turn at the piano, I’m not sure his attitude is much better towards Canadians as whole—left, right or centre. “I’ve got my own lyrics for this song that might cause a bit of controversy,” he says in the clip, before he starts tickling the ivories. To the editor: Re: “An open letter to our latest B.C. Liberal leader,” March 10. I think Geoff Olson’s analysis of the Christy Clark was lucid, concise and accurate. However I do trust her to deliver on promised policies better than a pizza delivery truck in Tripoli. For example, the family value I hope she delivers on is the death penalty. No more namby pamby with the sleazy ministerial aids Basi and Virk who were on the take in the B.C. Rail sale, and then obtained a further $6 million in legal fees paid for by you and me. Get these buggers on death row and see how quickly they spill the beans on who pulled their strings, Minister Gary Farell-Collins? Premier Big Red Mittens? I know it’s a challenge, lethal injection, elec-

tric chair or gas chamber, but unelected Premier Christy can deliver. Also I believe Christy can deliver on the family value of marriage for gays and lesbians, equal spousal beneﬁts, and the rights to adopt, parent and abort. With her family values she can end child poverty, homelessness, and institutionalized food banks for mothers and fathers. If Christy puts our money where her mouth is there will be a tsunami of social programs for family values. By the way Geoff, please don’t do these insightful and perceptive pieces. Downtown Eastside draws addicts from everywhere

To the editor: Re: “Strathcona residents not opposed to methadone clinic,” Letters, March 30. When James Johnstone talks about opposition to the proposed methadone clinic, he is speaking on behalf of the voting members of the Strathcona Residents Association (you need to attend a minimum number of meetings to vote). A vision document, which outlines the community’s opposition, was created for the neighbourhood by SPOTA, Strathcona Community Centre, Ray-Cam Community Centre, the association and the BIA. The fact is that the city needs to decentralize addiction services. Addicts are often forced into the Downtown Eastside because they simply cannot access the services they need in their own neigh-

bourhoods. Addicts are not all born in the Downtown Eastside—they often come from the middle and upper class, from educated parents living in neighbourhoods all over the city. Why we would prevent them from accessing services in their own communities is beyond me. Judy Kenzie, Strathcona

He begins by repeating the myth about methadone being nearly impossible to kick by offering sweeping generalizations such as “methadone is a failed idea.” Methadone isn’t a failed idea,

methadone programs are an option—an option that will present an opportunity to some addicts and be less of an asset to others. How do I know this? A methadone program that I undertook here in the 1990s allowed me the stability to move away from more than two decades of well entrenched behaviours and addiction, which I eventually left behind. I have friends who share the same story. I was angry when I read what I felt to be hogwash. I’m just bafﬂed at what passes as informed and expert opinion. If Berner’s never met a former addict who has made successful use of a methadone program, as he writes, then perhaps he’s not the authority that he imagines himself to be. Sean Ellis, Vancouver

Artist Robyn Levy, who was recently diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease and also has breast cancer, wants her art work to inspire others facing health challenges. In an email to the Courier, Levy wrote in part, “These digital illustrations reﬂect how I see myself and my changing body as I explore the many themes of illness. They include denial and acceptance, hope and despair, degeneration and disﬁgurement, isolation and community, dreams and reality.” (On a personal note, I promise to never complain about my sore knee again.) A collection of Levy’s limited-edition work entitled Go Figure, is on display at the Jewish Community Centre and 25 per cent of all sales are earmarked for the Parkinson’s Society of B.C. Levy describes the fundraiser as a collection of “whimsical gesture drawings expressing her heightened appreciation of the human body.” The exhibition runs now through May 8 at the centre, 950 West 41st Ave. Admission is free. For the women in their 50s and 60s seated around a table at McDonald’s restaurant on Main Street near West 33rd Avenue early Wednesday morning, the fountain of youth appears to have been found in exercise. Even with no makeup, red cheeks and dishevelled hair from the boot camp exercise class they just completed, each of the women looks at least 10 years younger than her age. Savannagh Marchell, who will soon turn 57, said that until beginning the Healthiest Winner program at Riley Park Community Centre last January, she never considered herself athletic. “What I’ve discovered about myself is that my body actually is athletic, it was my mind that wasn’t,” said Marchell. “I told myself for so long that I couldn’t do it, but I can.” Marchell, Frances Fatovic and Dorothy Campbell are three recent graduates of the Healthiest Winner program who’ve progressed to the more rigorous Intencity Bootcamp at Riley Park, which includes cardiovascular, resistance and endurance training. The Healthiest Winner program at Riley Park is designed for people who’ve avoided exercise and activity because of age, illness, poverty or ambition. The program introduces participants to exercise and offers workshops on topics including stress management, nutrition and smoking cessation. Last fall, the three women decided they were ready for more of a challenge and signed up for the early morning boot camp classes that run from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., three times a week. The women, who try to meet for coffee every Wednesday morning following

their exercise class, say the social aspect of the program is a draw. During the interview Marchell and Fatovic teased Campbell about her newly discovered prowess at planks, an abdominal exercise that includes holding a position on the ﬂoor with only elbows and toes touching, while keeping the body rigid. “She’s the plank queen,” Marchell said of Campbell, who admits she can hold the position for seven minutes. Campbell recently realized what a difference the classes have made when she ran to make a streetlight. “I sprinted and I made it,” she said. “I couldn’t do that before. I hated exercise.” Fatovic, who turns 64 this summer, agreed her new-found running ability surprised her the most. “Before I couldn’t run for the bus,” she said laughing. “I’m not saying I’m a great runner, but I’m running.” Fatovic said she learned she can’t take her body for granted. “No one else is going to do it for you, you have to do it yourself,” she said. But more often than not, with birthday parties also comes the inevitable mountain of waste: wrapping paper, goody-bag trinkets, and toys that the birthday child really doesn’t need and may not even want. With Earth Day approaching, now is a good time to reinvent your child’s birthday party into an eco-friendlier one. Here are some ‘green’ tips that will keep the birthday party fun quotient high and the waste low, without hurting your wallet.

Gifts

No doubt, gifts are on every birthday child’s mind. But does your child really need 15 gifts? Try these charitable alternatives to the traditional copious gift giving. Ask for donations in lieu of gifts. Your child can help choose a charity to receive the donations. If your birthday party is near Christmas, ask for new, unwrapped toys for a local toy charity. Or, ask for non-perishable food items for a food bank.

You could also ask for donations of money. For example, you can suggest each child bring two toonies, one for the charity of the birthday child’s choice and one for the birthday child to purchase his own gift. This way, your child gets a little something too. If you’d like someone to handle the nittygritty of donations, sign up with websites like Echoage.com, which makes it easy for parents to build in the charitable aspect into their child’s birthday party. You simply invite our guests using Echoage’s online invitations. Guests RSVP and make a contribution online. Half of the proceeds are sent to the birthday child to spend how he or she wishes, and the other half is sent to the charity of his or her choice.

Goody bags

You know those goody bag stuffers—they’re those forgotten plastic toys that you always end up stepping on in the middle of the night. Traditionally, loot bags are filled with these inexpensive, throwaway items that are often purchased from dollar stores. And for good reason – it can get expensive filling up a dozen bags with several toys. But there’s a way to still give party treats without spending bigger bucks. Instead of thinking quantity, think quality. Give away one awesome thing instead of a loot bag

filled with a lot of notso-awesome things. Try a planted flower. Or better yet, let the kids plant a seed in a pot and let them take that home as their party souvenir. A single fantastic giveaway that doesn’t go straight into the landfills is always a good choice. A party giveaway of food, like cookies or cupcakes that you have the kids decorate themselves at the party, is good because they get consumed, not thrown away. If you want to give away goody bags, forego the plastic bags. Fill up recyclable paper lunch bags that kids can decorate at the party. Or, purchase some of those reusable snack or lunch bags that are so popular these days, and fill with edibles.

Take it outside

Enjoy the great outdoors and save on energy consumption. An outside party is fueled strictly by kinetic energy of the partygoers!

Take the festivities to the park or your own backyard. Set out old-fashioned games tha can be done with items you already have: a three-legged race, a hula hooping contest, squirt gun battle (if you don’t have squir guns, use empty dish detergent bottles tha you’ve saved up and cleaned, or ask every guest to bring his or her own), a cherry spitting contest or tug-of-war. You can also set out sidewalk chalk, hopscotch, or a skip rope. If you’re at the beach, make sandcastle building one of the activities, or see who can build the tallest mountain of sand in the shortest amount of time. Making your child’s birthday party easie on the environment doesn’t mean you have to compromise on fun or spend more money.

Cut out centre of paper plate so a ring that is 1.5” wide remains. Cut out enough egg shapes out of different coloured felt (when placed overlapped on the ring, they should cover the whole ring). Let your kids glue on glitter, pom poms, glitter, yarn and ribbon on each felt egg shape. Let dry. Glue each decorated egg shape on to the paper ring, overlapping at the edges, until the entire wreath is covered. Allow to dry.

You’ll need: Small paper bags Coloured construction paper Googly eyes Felts Pipe cleaners White glue or glue stick Position the lunch bags, folded ﬂat, with the fold at the top. With the bottom of the fold representing the ‘mouth’ of the puppet, let your kids create their animals: Bunny puppet: Cut out long bunny ears and glue to the top of the bag. Stick on googly eyes on the folded, nose, and pipe-cleaner whiskers, and draw and decorate the bunny’s body. Chickadee puppet: Take a yellow paper bag, and add a beak that has been cut out of orange construction paper. Stick on googly eyes and legs you’ve made out of pipe cleaners (for the legs) and construction paper (for the feet). Cut two wings out of yellow construction paper and stick on either side of the bag.

Easter Puzzle Hunt Game

Instead of the traditional Easter egg hunt, where everyone gathers as many sugary treats as possible, hide the pieces of an Easter-themed puzzle. Once all the pieces have been found, all players work together to put the picture together. Once the puzzle is solved, you can give everyone a small prize. If you can’t ﬁnd an Easter-themed puzzle, make one. Just print out an Easter colour page (you can ﬁnd many online), have your kids help you colour it, and then stick it onto lightweight cardboard. Given the increased number of falls and at home injuries among seniors, many caregivers are choosing to install a personal emergency response systems. Vancouver Coastal Health’s Caregiver Support Program can be a real help. So, what is a caregiver? For these purposes, a caregiver is essentially anyone who provides unpaid care and support at home, in the community or in a care facility to an adult friend or family member who is living with a disability, chronically ill, elderly or palliative. About 85 per cent of people provide care for loved ones at some point in their lives. Some people take care of a relative for a few weeks or months following an acute illness or surgery, while others provide care on a daily-basis for someone with a chronic condition.

April 22 is Earth Day. And at no time is it more necessary, and long-overdue, to control emissions as we drive to and fro across the Lower Mainland. It seems like everywhere we turn we are being asked to do our part for the environment.This means taking eco-friendly action at home, at work, and while driving to reduce our carbon “footprint”. It’s not as hard as it seems, and many environmentally friendly habits save us money in the long run. Here are some tips from your local BCAA office to help you be good to Mother Nature while you’re on the road: • Avoid aggressive driving, such as jackrabbit starts and hard braking.These habits increase your fuel consumption by up to 40 percent. • Check your tire pressure at least once a month and ensure tires are not under-inflated. Under-inflated tires reduce your gas mileage and fuel efficiency. • Service your vehicle regularly. A poorly tuned engine produces up to 50 percent more emissions than one that is properly maintained. • Look for an “energy conserving” brand when buying engine oil. Using the lowest multigrade of oil recommended in your owner’s manual can improve the fuel efficiency of your motor.

• Replace worn-out oil or clogged air ﬁlters to improve fuel consumption. • Remove unneeded items from your car. Hauling excess weight will result in increased fuel consumption. • Use an ethanol-blended fuel to reduce harmful exhaust emissions by up to 30 percent. • Use an alternative method of transportation such as West Coast Express, Skytrain or bicycle. • Consider a hybrid or one of the new fuel efﬁcient cars, if you’re in the market for a new car. Hybrids run on electricity or gas, or a combination of the two. • Make a commitment to drive less. It’s good for your health and the environment. • Look for products that reward you for driving less. Acknowledging efforts to live greener lives is an emerging trend in the insurance industry. You can’t understate the importance of brand loyalty. A consumer’s first impression of a brand—whether it’s good or bad—plays a major role in his or her future financial decisions, and nowhere is this more evident than in the automotive world. When it comes to major purchases, it’s human nature to go with what you know. And that’s a problem for Toyota—or rather, that was a problem for Toyota. In 2003, the Japanese automaker was at the top of its game, increasing sales steadily and producing the world’s best-built vehicles. However, its vehicle line-up had taken a decidedly conservative turn over the years, leading consumers to view Toyota as the first place you’d go for a family car, and the last place you’d go for a fun car. While Honda, Mazda, and Nissan were attracting the young adults who would drive future sales, Toyota couldn’t get them through the door. Recognizing that it was losing out on a key demographic, Toyota went on the offensive. However, rather than tampering with its strong identity and well-established values, Toyota instead created Scion: a new automotive brand focused entirely on young adults. The idea behind Scion was to offer a completely different purchasing experience and vehicle selection, bringing new consumers to the Toyota family and generating the oh-so-important brand loyalty. Based on the results to date, the solution works—in the U.S., 70 per cent of Scion sales are to new customers, and 50 per cent of Scion owners go on to buy Toyotas.

The Scion xB bears similarities to Toyota styling, but with more angular profiles. From a Canadian standpoint, the only issue is that you couldn’t get a Scion north of the border—until now. After a carefully staged rollout across the U.S., Scion has finally come to Canada with three current cars: the xD, xB, and tC—and soon the upcoming iQ. Without a doubt, the xB is the most important of these vehicles, effectively serving as Scion’s flagship vehicle. Redesigned in 2007, the boxy xB embodies the Scion philosophy, with a single trim level and an endless list of optional features from which owners can choose. While you could simply pick a colour and drive an xB off the lot, the fun comes from customizing the vehicle to create something that’s uniquely yours. That devotion to personal expression is what differentiates Scion from Toyota, enabling the brand to build its own reputation. And that reputation will play a major role in the future success of the entire company. Design The second-generation xB has a very clean and simple design, serving as a blank canvas for the many personalization items available to it. There’s a definite family resemblance amongst the three current Scion vehi-

cles, which bear similarities to Toyota styling, but with more angular profiles and harder lines. With a bigger footprint and softer edges than the original xB, the current model would seem almost back-heavy due to the large and windowless rear pillars, if not for the meaty front grille and bumper to balance it out. The minimalist interior is Spartan and functional, with large dials, a centre-mounted gauge cluster, and a console-mounted shifter. As with the exterior, the intention is for buyers to dress the xB up with accessories, but the cabin might be a little too simple for those who just want a stock Scion. Perhaps the biggest issue is that the xB’s interior feels a tad cheap relative to the competition, due mostly to an abundance of hard and unforgiving plastic. Given how it’s marketed, you’d expect a bit more from Scion. Performance With a 2.4L inline-four producing 158-hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, the xB has sufficient power to get around when fully loaded. More fun than your average Toyota but still practical Continued from previous page For the most part, the xB drives like a small Toyota. However, it’s a lot more interesting than a Corolla or a Matrix, with a fun-loving attitude that’s mindful of the original RAV4 from the 90s. Handling is decent enough, with good road feedback from the steering. There’s nothing complicated about the xB, which demonstrates great balance and quickness without feeling a need to go fast. Scion offers a number of Toyota Racing Development parts for improved performance, including a rear sway bar for better handling, brake kit, lowering springs, strut tower brace, and sport exhaust, along with a variety of engine parts. Environment Inside, the xB benefits from great seats that provide firm and supportive feel without proving too hard on your back. There’s lots of headroom—as you’d expect from such a boxy vehicle—and excellent rear legroom for a compact vehicle. Depending on your demographic, the spacious cargo area (which includes a useful underfloor storage bin) either brings an air of practicality to the xB, or provides lots of space for a giant subwoofer and amplifier. As far as controls go, the centre-mounted gauge cluster takes some getting used to, while the heating/cooling controls follow the industry-standard three-dial setup. Everything else is pretty much left up to the stereo system, and here you have a choice of the stock Pioneer system or an upgraded
