Service clubs rise to occasion Annual joint effort results in more than 500 hampers delivered to low-income families in Delta this Christmas BY

Hampers are loaded up for the holidays

George Koka’s worries were for naught this holiday season. “We thought we might be short of food but it turned out the schools were just awesome this year. We got lots of stuff and we even have a little bit left over,” said Koka, a Ladner Legion member and a longtime volunteer organizer for Deltassist’s annual Christmas hamper program for low-income families. Because of the way Christmas fell on the calendar, volunteers delivered hampers to families a week earlier than usual this year, he noted. Approximately 530 hampers, which included a turkey, potatoes, soup, fruit and a variety of other food, were delivered this time. Koka said the leftover food stocked up the South Delta Food Bank and the rest would go to the Surrey Food Bank. Deltassist community services co-ordinator Carly Geistlinger said volunteers from local service clubs do an amazing job with the hamper program. “The service clubs all come together, put the boxes together, start filling the boxes, do the pickups from the schools ... they’re amazing. It’s a lot of work. They have to do this all within a week,” said Geistlinger. Delta schools donate plenty of food while volunteers purchase the rest.

Volunteer Bob Turner sorted through food hampers last Friday at the Paridon Horticultural warehouse in East Delta. Koka has been helping out with the hamper program for over three decades. “I just keep on plugging along,” he said. From an organization standpoint, things work well, he said. “I know how it’s done. I have everybody doing stuff and nobody’s standing around.” The level of support from the community has left an impression on Koka. “I’m truly impressed for all the people in Delta; totally impressed [with] all the help and volunteers.”

Roberta Whiley (front), Lori Bentz-Sim (bottom left) and Jill Tasman were among the volunteers at Deltassist’s Toy Depot at the East Delta Hall earlier this month.

Not quite as many kids used the Toy Depot this year. “Our donations seemed to be a bit down this year but applications were also down for us, which is probably a good thing,” said Deltassist community services co-ordinator Carly Geistlinger. Deltassist, a non-profit social services organization, collects toy donations for kids from low-income families. About 700 kids got toys

at the three-day Toy Depot at the East Delta Hall earlier this month, Geistlinger said. Nearly 740 kids received toys last year. Volunteers, who help set up, check people in and assist with the browsing, provided amazing support, she noted. “We couldn’t do it without them. They’re so dedicated and loyal to the program. They show up every year and we can always rely on them,” Geistlinger said. While some helpers have been lending a hand for as long as 25 years, it was nice to see some new faces too,

she said. “They get right into it just like the more seasoned volunteers.” Deltassist also administers a Christmas hamper program where local service clubs collect food and distribute it to low-income families before Christmas. “We really appreciate the community’s support, both with the toys and food. Once again they’ve come through for us and for the low-income families of Delta. There’s a lot of gratefulness we see from the clients for that,” Geistlinger said.

Delta will take the lead in a new program providing volunteers to shovel the driveways, sidewalks and walkways of local seniors. During a recent presentation on the municipality’s winter preparedness program, civic staff announced the creation of a Snow Angels program, developed in conjunction with the McKee and Kennedy seniors’ societies. The societies initially embraced the idea of

As 2010 comes to a close, it is time to look back and consider the events and happenings of the past year. The recovery from the international economic crisis continued as 2010 opened, although the situation was and is somewhat fragile depending on the country considered. The stimulus packages instituted by central banks around the world injected a tremendous amount of liquidity into economies. As a result, interest rates remain at or near historical lows and some stock markets have reacted positively. For example, at the beginning of the year the S&P/TSX index stood at approximately 11,900 and as of the middle of November was at about 12,800, an increase of 7.5%. Some industry sectors such as gold and precious metals have had a banner year. However, we should not fool ourselves into believing that we are ‘out of the woods’ just yet. Those stimulus packages also served to dramatically increase the debt loads of most governments and materially delayed the chances of governments running balanced budgets - deficits are now the norm. We are beginning to see the belt tightening effects in the budgets of most levels of government around the world, including Canada and particularly in some of the countries in Europe such as Greece and Ireland. While the macroeconomic efforts at the governmental level are really out of our hands, we can and should still consider how we can best manage our finances to ensure that we are reacting appropriately to the economic environment. While personal equity portfolios have generally done fairly well this year, it is crucial that we also consider the liability side of our balance sheets. The historically low interest rates were designed to stimulate demand but far too many people have been enticed into assuming unreasonable amounts of debt as a result. Currently, the debt to income ratio of the average Canadian household stands at approximately 1.45 to one - this is an historical high and should be of concern. Interest rates cannot remain at these levels for long and an increase in rates will result in financial stress for many families. The increase in household debt presents a compelling argument for proper financial planning and management. We are committed to the concept that every client is unique and that an ideal portfolio can be constructed that will meet the client’s personal circumstances and achieve their goals. The recent turbulence in the markets has made it strikingly evident that creating and maintaining this ideal portfolio is essential to provide you with the understanding and patience to emotionally weather these sorts of storms. Hopefully 2010 has been a good year for you and your family. I hope that at this festive time of year you will take some time to set aside the concerns of the financial world and embrace the pleasures of time spent with family and friends - that is indeed a priceless commodity. All the best for the holidays and 2011.

recruiting the volunteers, keeping a data base of individuals and acting as a call centre. Delta was to assist in providing criminal record checks. Parks and creation director Ken Kuntz told council in a subsequent meeting the societies, after talking with their insurance providers, have decided to back off as the program providers, but they’re still willing to help with co-ordination. Kuntz noted that as operator of the program, the municipality assumes a degree of liability when a

volunteer provided by Delta enters a private property. As a means of minimizing the risk, staff looked at introducing waivers from the homeowner as well as limiting the program to municipal sidewalk clearing only. However, administering waivers was considered impractical while sidewalk clearing only was looked at as inadequate for those needing assistance. Kuntz said Delta has a data base of volunteers who are pre-cleared, having record checks already done. “The intent of this pro-

gram is to lend a neighbourly hand. The program enhances the safety of everyone in Delta who uses Delta sidewalks after a snowfall. It encourages volunteerism among Delta residents,” his report to council stated. Several Canadian cities already have Snow Angel programs. For more information about the program, including how to sign up as a volunteer, ask for the parks and recreation department at municipal hall at 604946-4411.

Police issue warning after fraudulent e-mail claims to offer tax windfall BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta police are warning the public again this week after a new fraud attempt surfaced in South Delta. Department spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said police were tipped off after a resident reported an e-mail that appeared to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. Brooks said the resident received the e-mail claiming the government agency had adjusted his last tax return and he was owed several hundred dollars. The e-mail then instructed the recipient to download and fill out an attached form, which asked for personal and financial information, and return it to receive the refund. “Canada Revenue Agency does not conduct their business this way,” Brooks said, adding the attached form did not have any logos or the Canadian flag and the e-mail con-

tained several typos. • Another familiar phone scam is still making the rounds in the community. Leslie Martin was at her parent’s house this week when the phone rang. She picked it up and was greeted by a man saying: “Hi grandma, it’s your favourite grandson.” Martin said she asked the caller for a name. When the caller tried to dodge the question, Martin said, she asked a second time and the man simply hung up. It’s a telephone scam that has been targeting seniors in recent months. A person will call and claim to be a family member in need of money because they are in some kind of trouble. The caller will ask the victim to wire money through a transfer service. “Don’t give money to anyone asking for it over the phone,” Brooks said, adding anyone who receives such a call should verify the caller’s story through other family members.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I’m not an artist, nor an art critic, but I do possess a sense of humour, which makes me perfectly suited to judge our annual Christmas colouring contest. I’m actually a co-judge, a position I’ve held alongside my son for the last several years, although my input these days is generally limited to how well a particular drawing will reproduce in the paper. Given my absolute lack of artistic talent, year after year I’m in awe of the ability of some of the kids in these parts, examples of which can be seen annually in our Christmas Greetings section, included with today’s edition of the paper. What you don’t see in this section are some of the — how should I put this? — entries from those slightly less artistically inclined. Just as kids’ letters to Santa can often be funny, putting a blank piece of newsprint in front of them and asking them to create a Christmas scene can also lend itself to some hilarity. We received several submissions where Santa was so skinny I feared the old guy might have an eating disorder and others where St. Nick was so rotund the SPCA would almost certainly be required to ensure the well being of his valiant reindeer. Speaking of those famous reindeer, they are being replaced this year by what appears to be cows, goats and a pack of determined Chihuahuas. When Santa does land on the rooftop and descend the chimney with his sack full of presents, he will encounter life forms sure to make his head spin. There will be families of giants, where even the children are taller than the Christmas tree, as well as households where all the inhabitants have to look up to see the coffee table. There will be square people (let’s hope he’s not bringing them clothes) and people with arms so long Santa should check his wallet before moving on next door. There will be fireplaces so large they couldn’t possibly have met code, cookies the size of pizza pans and glasses of milk that, if consumed, would ensure a white Christmas, although not the kind you’re likely to enjoy. Christmas is a magical time and there are things that take place that defy logic, so I’m more than willing to cut these budding artists some slack when it comes to the liberties they’ve taken with their pencil crayons. At the end of the day, art is to be enjoyed, so if your work can bring a smile to someone else’s face — regardless of the reason and at Christmastime no less — then you’ve most definitely succeeded.

Engaging voters earlier will help develop lifelong habits NATHALIE HEIBERGHARRISON

COMMUNITY COMMENT When there’s a party leadership race, people tend to go a little mad. When there are two happening in the province at the same time, as we have with the B.C. Liberals and NDP, then it’s probably best to get the popcorn ready. Surprisingly though, amidst all the kerfuffle, Liberal candidate Mike de Jong has put forward an idea that doesn’t polarize people along party lines and by no means guarantees him more votes. He knows he’s trying to get elected, right? Either way, it’s an interesting proposal. He wants to lower the voting age to 16, and said this about the idea: “Instead of simply decrying the fact that fewer and fewer people are participating, we have to create a culture of engagement, and the only way to do that is to say to a student at a forma-

tive time in their lives, you are full members of society, and instead of leaving here and never voting or never voting until you’re 40 or 50, here’s your chance to make a difference.” Seems reasonable, right? Fellow Liberal candidates Kevin Falcon and George Abbott agreed with him too, and both said they would consider adopting the idea if they were voted Liberal leader. Sometimes though, reason makes the ears perk up on very unreasonable people. Iain Hunter, columnist for the Times Colonist in Victoria, wrote in response to de Jong’s comments: “Most of the 16- to 18-year-olds I know, though, seem content to fritter and twitter their electronically dominated lives away. Some probably think the HST is a sexually transmitted disease for which recall is a prescribed ointment.” He continued, “I know young people this age have more things to do, like studying, working, playing rugby or buying clothes, but I’m not convinced that younger teenagers who have little to do but hang out will be inclined to turn out on voting day.” Let’s use an example then. In Vienna, the voting age was

lowered to 16 in 2005 and in the civic election that year, 59 per cent of 16 and 17 year olds cast a vote, compared to 61 per cent of adults. Austria followed suit and lowered the voting age to 16 in 2007. During the 2010 federal election, those under 30 had the same turnout as those over 60 at 47 per cent. In comparison, 51 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in the 2009 B.C. election, down from 58 per cent in 2005 and 55 per cent in 2001. Allowing 16-year-olds to vote gives them the opportunity to become informed through school programs, and develop the habit of heading to the polls before they move out of their parents’ house. And the fact is, we already have proof that students in B.C. can, and will, become actively engaged in the democratic process. More than 60,000 students from 454 schools across B.C. cast ballots in the 2009 B.C. election — not with Elections BC, but with the non-profit, nonpartisan organization Student Vote. They were all under the age of 18, yet found time between twittering, playing rugby and buying clothes to get informed and make a choice, albeit one that wasn’t registered with Elections BC.

Editor: Re: Complaints as noisy as planes, Dec. 18 Coun. Robert Campbell’s comments touting the efforts of Vancouver International Airport to reduce aircraft noise do not address the noise issues that people have raised, but only underscore the lack of understanding as to the source of the noise, and for that matter, what actually constitutes noise. The noise reduction program introduced by Vancouver International Airport in the November 2008 timeframe did help

to reduce the noise from night time departures and very likely helped to alleviate noise over Tsawwassen, but the price for the noise reduction has been a dramatic increase in the persistent flights over Ladner. I live in Ladner, and prior to the November 2008 changes, aircraft noise was virtually non-existent, but now, independent of wind direction, and hence aircraft departure direction, there is persistent aircraft traffic over Ladner. By persistent, I mean flights over Ladner every 10 to 15 minutes. While a

few flights do not on their own constitute noise, it is the continual aircraft traffic, and hence noise, that is the heart of the problem. As suggested by Coun. Bruce McDonald, Ladner has become a convenient shortcut for aircraft to reduce a few minutes of flying time, which in relation to a typical flight duration is trivial. If, as Campbell indicates, the 2008 night time departure routes have reduced noise, why are these routes not used for all flight paths, day and night? Fortunately there are

initiatives such as the recent motion by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities that will study the issue of noise caused by airport operations, and not dismiss complaints as coming from people with sensitive hearing. Further, we can only hope the plans to install a noise monitoring station in Ladner will address the key problem, namely persistent aircraft noise, and not focus on the isolated noise from a single aircraft over-flight. Gordon Staples

Lack of EMF monitoring at high school is disappointing Editor: Re: Saip re-elected board chair by fellow Delta school trustees, Dec. 18 How disappointing and tragic to hear the Delta school board only has enough money to monitor the EMF levels at South Delta Secondary once a year. The amount of electricity that runs through these extra high voltage power lines is enough to light up

over 700,000 houses and buildings and neither the school district nor B.C. Hydro has enough money to monitor and track the ongoing chronic exposure that our children must be exposed to? How is it that local residents have the time and wherewithal to monitor these lines independently and at no cost, while the profit being made by B.C. Hydro is not pumped back

into the system to protect our children? At the Tsawwassen Area Plan meetings it was very evident that residents do not want development under these lines due to the associated health risks, parents in Maple Ridge are pulling their children from schools due to the EMF exposure of the WiFi in their schools and the House of Commons is now looking at funding long-term studies concern-

ing EMF exposure. If you are concerned about this ongoing issue, you can follow the electrical flow anytime of the day at www1.bctc.com/bctc/ system_cms/actual_flow/ indexVITR.aspx. You can also send letters of concern to the municipality, school trustees, and provincial and federal governments. Heather Colls Mothers Against Power Poles

User pay would be ‘suiter’ deal

Editor: Re: Not such a suite deal after all, Murphy’s Law, Dec. 18 Delta council has underestimated the impact the perceived “tax grab” has on those property owners who have either legal secondary suites or otherwise. Perhaps if CAO George Harvie would explain why the $800 (now $500) fee is necessary, those of us with secondary suites might be more inclined to register.

In my neighbourhood there are two daycare centres, each with about 10 to 12 preschool children as well as at least one additional adult to assist. There are also a number of households with more than one family living in the singlefamily unit. A family of two with a secondary suite with one or two occupants certainly does not use any more utilities than we already pay for. I believe a justifiable way

would be for the municipality to install (at a fair cost and one-time only) water meters in homes with secondary suites and also charge a fee for more than two garbage bags per household now allowed. This should apply to residential daycares, boarding houses and B&Bs within the municipality. Our hydro/electricity charges are user based, so why not our utility fees? Edwin Charles

Gift of literacy given to children this Christmas

Editor: The members of the Delta Community Literacy Committee would like to thank the residents of Delta for their support of our Christmas Book Drive. Because of their generosity, we were able to distribute 413 books to children in need through Deltassist. We would also like to thank Delta public libraries, Black Bond Books and

the North Delta branch of Vancity, which were drop off points for donations. Literacy development is more then reading and writing, it includes the ability to communicate clearly and apply information that is learned. Strong literacy skills are important for children and youth to increase their chances for living a fulfilling and successful adult life.

The donated books support a child’s literacy development and ensure children and youth, regardless of their family’s income, have the opportunity to experience the joy of reading. Thanks to everyone who helped us with this project. Lynda Brummitt Literacy Outreach Worker Delta Community Literacy Committee

Star worth adoring “The Kardashian Christmas Miracle” is a December magazine cover story. The family saga has captivated the hearts of millions of adoring fans. They have done nothing society would consider noble or great. They are not advocates for any worthy need or cause. Their “star” rises upon dysfunctional and outrageous behaviour, their obsession with physical looks and excessive materialism. How sad this makes them worthy of our “adoration.” If you attend a place of Christian worship over this season, the story will be told of another “Christmas miracle.” Jesus was not a reality TV star, nor was he the fodder of trash media columns. He did not have an excessive wardrobe, nor was he a consumer of plastic surgery. Jesus did not exploit

the pain of others to highlight his own fame. Rather than focusing on himself, he pointed to God and the needs of others. He shunned the red carpet. Endorsements and movie contracts did not motivate him. All the “in” people avoided him and conspired to put him to death. Yet, thousands of years later “trust” in Jesus has changed and continues to change the lives of countless millions of people. Long after the Kardashians have faded in the public memory, this obscure Galilean peasant will live on. His life continues to make a lasting difference. More than just a momentary splash, for those who really seek “life,” Jesus is the “star” worth adoring. Jim Short can be reached at minister@ladnerunited.org.

Complaints as noisy as planes

Councillor says YVR’s efforts to reduce aircraft noise are paying dividends, although some would disagree BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Vancouver International Airport is making noticeable efforts to minimize airplane noise from disturbing South Delta residents, said Coun. Robert Campbell. “I live in the same neighbourhood as these letter writers. I’m going to stick my neck out and say I do not share their experience,” he said during a presentation by YVR officials. Campbell said noise from YVR over the last few years has, in fact, diminished thanks to initiatives that have been undertaken. “I think YVR should be commended for its job on this issue and when I’ve heard complaints the first thing I do is go on WebTrak and look it up and some of these things I just can’t understand how there’s a real complaint

in there. “I understand some people are more sensitive to noise than others, but I’m satisfied everyone is doing their best to manage those issues and I personally find I hear less airplane noise than I did five, six years ago. I don’t hear it in the middle of the night like I used to. I don’t hear it in the morning.” During the presentation to council, Anne Murray, YVR’s vice-president of community and environmental affairs, and aircraft noise and emissions specialist Mark Chang explained some of the initiatives underway to decrease noise from jet aircraft flying over residential areas. Transport Canada approved the airport’s five-year noise manage-

ment plan last year, which contains 16 initiatives put together with input from an aeronautical noise management committee that includes a Delta resident and civic staff member. Chang pointed out the airport has “a very sophisticated” noise tracking system with 20 monitoring terminals. Four new terminals were added last year, including one in Tsawwassen, joining two existing sites in North Delta. The airport also recently acquired a portable noise monitoring device that was used this summer in parts of South Surrey and North Delta as well as Vancouver. The equipment was most recently set up in Ladner and that data will be analyzed early next year, noted

Chang. Meantime, a new facility will soon open to reduce noise from nighttime maintenance work on aircraft testing their engines at the airport. Yet another initiative, which began this year at YVR, noted Chang, is quarterly noise information seminars that are free to the public. Regarding the ongoing concerns over overhead aircraft disturbing South Delta residents at night, Coun. Anne Peterson said there had been a previous discussion between council and YVR about flights taking place between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., the time most cargo planes depart or land. Noting YVR is a 24/7 operation, Chang said nighttime routings are in effect for pilots. One of the measures in place is a preferential runway system to ensure pilots take advantage of

Robert Campbell Noise has diminished flying over the water as much as possible during the night hours, he explained. “Wind and weather permitting, we want to keep as much traffic out over the Strait of Georgia as much as possible,” said Chang. See NOISE page 3

Bringing Broadway to South Delta B

roadway comes to Ladner with Tracy Neff & Friends in Concert next month. The show, which features Neff, a local actress and singer, will be the first of a fresh new series — Ovation Performance Series — sponsored by Cedar Park Church and produced by Michelle Jones. The series will include local, national and international professional performers who will provide diverse entertainment and programming for the community to enjoy. Jones said starting a new series has been something she’s been thinking about for a while. It “has been on my mind for a few years now to bring a regular series to Ladner that showcases incredibly talented artists, simultaneously supporting local community charities and causes,” she said. Jones also produces the Delta Arts Council’s Young People’s Concert Series at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Proceeds from the first show in the Ovation Performance Series will go to the Delta Hospice Society. Jones said that with the support of Cedar Park Church and Tsawwassen jazz pianist Carol Peters, she’s grateful for this opportunity to pursue her passion for sharing the performing arts with the community. “The 2011 season will hopefully include several concerts in the spring and in the fall featuring performers from around the Lower Mainland who have performed on national and international stages,” she said. Jones said she’s honoured Neff, who’s from Tsawwassen, has agreed to kick-start the series. “Tracy is a charismatic performer that loves what she does and lives her performance. She has a true star-quality that radiates on stage,” said Jones. “Along with a voice that will knock your socks off, audience members can’t help but fall in love with Tracy and the characters she plays.” Locals may remember Neff’s heart-warming performance of her one-woman show, My Dreams of the Big Apple and a Coffee to Go!, at Genesis Theatre in front of a sold-out audience several years

Tracy Neff (above) is bringing Broadway to Ladner next month with Tracy Neff & Friends in Concert. The show is the first in a new series — Ovation Performance Series. In February, Neff will collaborate with Larry Enns (right) for a revue, The Sunny Side of the Street, which will celebrate the lyrics of Dorothy Fields. ago. Most recently, she performed in the Arts Club Theatre and Belfry Theatre co-production of The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee as Olive Ostrovsky. Graduating from the Boston Conservatory with a degree in musical theatre in 2004, Neff was a featured singer with the Boston Pops Orchestra and performed in shows including Godspell, Candide, Macbeth and the Captain’s Daughter. On the East Coast, she performed in many musical revues and shows: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Music Man, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. Other credits include Laurey William in Oklahoma! (Chemainus Theatre

Festival), Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls (Gateway Theatre), Amy in Company (Arts Club Theatre, Jessie Nomination for Best Supporting Actress), Charlotte/Milkmaid/Bet in Oliver (Vancouver Playhouse Theatre), Sandy in Grease (Theatre Under The Stars), Abigail in BIG (Theatre Under The Stars) and Hope in Urinetown (Firehall Arts Centre). Neff will be collaborating with pianist Larry Enns, a producer and director of Vancouver revues. In February, they will perform in revue, The Sunny Side of the Street, a celebration of the lyrics of Dorothy Fields. Joining them on stage will be brilliant singers Tony Barton and Deanna Gutierrez. Barton, a musical theatre entertainer, has per-

formed across the United States and on international stages. In March 2011, Barton will be performing a solo show and tribute to Frank Sinatra, Blue Eyes Too, at Genesis Theatre. Gutierrez has performed in musicals, operas and oratorios in B.C. and Mexico. This fall, she made her debut at the Belfry Theatre as Martha in The Life Inside. Neff, who graduated from South Delta Secondary in 1999, has spent some time working with drama students at the Tsawwassen high school, including helping out as a co-director on last year’s production of the musical You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. “I really enjoy working with [the students] because it reminds me of where I came from,” she

said last year. “In my career and business, it gets really self focused so I’m always looking for opportunities to impart what I’m learning.” Tracy Neff & Friends in Concert is set to start the Ovation Performance Series on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave., Ladner. There will be a post concert chat with the performers. Tickets are $15 with proceeds donated to the Delta Hospice Society. Tickets can be purchased at Cedar Park Church. Call 604-946-7410.

ur next visit to Manhattan is going to be expensive: We’ll need separate hotel rooms for me, my husband and our daughter. That’s because we have different tastes in books. I know we’re talking hotel rooms, not reading rooms. But at the Library Hotel, the two are entwined. This 10-storey boutique hotel is organized by Dewey decimal classification. Depending on your floor, you could find yourself in Social Sciences, Literature, History, General Knowledge or Philosophy. Each room has a little library of books related to its category. On our last trip, we stayed on the sixth floor — Technology. Our room — 600.006, Health & Beauty — might more accurately have been called Ailments, Angst and Antidotes, with titles such as Say Goodnight to Insomnia; Diabetes: A Guide to Living Well; and The Doctor’s Sore Foot Book. Because the rooms are very small, there are just a few dozen books in each, so it’s easy to ignore them. That said, the rooms were designed by avid sailors, so the spaces work extremely well. The library-cum-breakfast room is large and bright, with long views up and down Madison Avenue, and filled with all manner of books. I borrowed a few non-fiction titles, which included John Summerson’s Georgian London and Jane King Hession’s Frank Lloyd Wright in New York: The Plaza Years. Yogini Patel, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, says many guests stay there because they’re intrigued by the Dewey Decimal concept, but I have to say that over the course of six days, I saw no one reading a book or even checking the spines in either the breakfast or the lobby libraries. True, the breakfast was good and there were a fair number of non-English speak-

ers, but who comes to Manhattan to read? Whatever the reason, I had the books to myself. There are 6,000 of them in the hotel, so clearly I will have to return. Next time, we may request the seventh floor, Arts. I could stake out 700.001, Architecture, with a great view of a gloriously ornate office building across 41st Street. My husband would like 700.04, Photography, and our daughter could stay in either 700.005, Music, or 700.003 Performing Arts. That would put us on the same floor. Otherwise, we might find ourselves separated into 300.002, Political Science (him); 700.006, Fashion Design (her); and 900.006, Biography (me). The hotel’s most requested room? That’s 800.001, Erotic Literature. It’s called the Love Room, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer curates its booklist. Fairy Tales (800.005) is the second-most popular (and one suspects it’s chosen by adults bent on regressing for a night or two). This hotel would make a great gift idea for a graduating law student (you could book 300.006 Law) or a young doctor finishing her residency (600.004, Medicine). The true bookworm would love to receive a night in 1000.001 Libraries. And a bonus: The hotel is just a block from the New York Public Library (but only the .006 suites get a glimpse of it). The library theme is everywhere. The key-card holder is fashioned to look like a classic novel in miniature; the flipside of the usual “Do Not Disturb” sign reads “Please Dust Off My Books”; and the hotel bar, Bookmarks, serves Capotes and Great Gatsbys. Mercifully, there’s no overkill; not one of the books is filed according to the Dewey Decimal Classification. Library Hotel (libraryhotel.com) is at 299 Madison Ave. at 41st Street; 212-9834500, 1-877-793-READ (7323). Rates, based on double occupancy, range from $245 to $769 US a night.

How to keep your Christmas cacti happy Green Room

12240815

This week I answer more questions from readers: Q. My Christmas cactus looks wilted and the leaves are all wrinkled even though it has buds on some of the ends. It has shot out many tiny roots from the

through under-watering. You should un-pot your cactus and look carefully at the roots. Remove any rotten or dead roots and repot the plant in fresh potting mix. Two parts potting mix, one part fine orchid bark and one part sand would do nicely. It would be good insurance to remove two or three of the healthiest stem segments and try to propagate them in the same mix you use for the mother plant.

Baby plants often grow better as a community in the same pot. Generally, Christmas cactus root better if you leave them out on a windowsill for a few weeks before potting them up. But since your segments already have roots and are likely dehydrated already, I think you’d be safer to pot them up immediately. Christmas cacti do best with frequent misting on the stem segments. Though misting once or twice a day

is standard for many humidity-loving plants, Christmas cacti need four or five mistings daily when they’re budding and flowering in warm house temperatures. This prevents the buds from drying out and dropping. Once flowering and bud formation ceases, you can revert to occasional misting. The roots can handle brief drying-out periods between waterings, but they get very sick if they’re left in arid or waterlogged conditions for weeks on end. These are not desert cacti. They come from tropical forests where they grow on rocks and in tree crevices. Their water intake is mainly from the constantly humid atmosphere around them and the roots are mainly a hold-fast, although the roots need enough moisture to maintain themselves.

P

Q. When I brought my Christmas cactus into the house this year, there was a huge yellow mushroom growing and spreading in the soil. What can I do? A. It’s time to repot your Christmas cactus. Remove as much old soil as you can, rinse the roots in plain, lukewarm water and repot in two parts potting mix, one part coarse sand and one part orchid bark. Some people add peat to potting soil, but most commercial potting soil is already heavy in peat. Too much peat in the mix can cause waterlogged soil and then roots can rot. It’s important the potting mix is sterilized. Mold, mildew and mushrooms start very easily in non-sterilized soil. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Chapman

Chapman was found hanging around someone's house for a while and seemed to have been abandoned. He is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet! He is always the first one to welcome you when you enter the Communal Cat Room. Chapman is comfortable with children and he gets along well with other cats too! This wonderful cat would make a great addition to a loving, primarily indoor, home that wants a snuggly and loving companion.

joints of the leaves. It is a healthy colour, but looks so unhappy. A. When a Christmas cactus looks wrinkled and wilted, the problem is almost always in the roots. Over-watering is the most common cause. This rots the roots. Because of this they’re unable to move water and nutrients up to the stem segments and the plant wilts. It’s also possible to get the same wilting effect

Birks turns in another gem for Ice Hawks

Goaltender turns aside 38 shots and Spencer Traher nets overtime winner as Delta squeaks past Abbotsford BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

If a 19-year-old hockey player could ever be considered a journeyman then goaltender Doug Birks is a perfect example. Playing for his fourth team in two years and making his second stop in Delta, Birks has been nothing short of outstanding in leading the Ice Hawks to one of the top records in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. The Richmond native was perhaps at his best Tuesday night when he turned aside 38 shots to earn first star honours in a 2-1 overtime win against the Abbotsford Pilots. He enters the Christmas break leading the league in wins (16), goals against average (2.23) and save percentage (.927). It was enough to earn him the starting position for the Tom Shaw Conference team at next month’s all-star game. “It’s been great,” said Birks of his considerable workload. I came here not knowing what to expect. They let me have the ball and run with it. “I always knew I had it in me but I never really got the opportunity. They finally gave it to me and I wouldn’t let it go away.” After an impressive run growing up through Seafair Minor Hockey, Birks was

signed by four PIJHL teams over a two-year period and played just nine games combined. The biggest stint was four games with the Richmond Sockeyes in his rookie season. Most PIJHL clubs are looking for a seasoned veteran or a top major midget prospect — putting proven Midget AAA goalies in a position where they typically have to be nothing short of spectacular to stick. Last season, the Ice Hawks rode Major Midget grad Andrew Hunt to the playoff finals. He has since signed with BCHL’s Surrey Eagles. They intended to go a similar route this year, but that plan was abandoned when Kirk Thompson made the jump right from Major Midget to the BCHL with Prince George. It left the goaltending job wide open and Birks made the most of the opportunity. “Doug was great for us tonight and he has been like that the whole season,” said Ice Hawks general manager Peter Zerbinos. “He has been on his game for us from day one and I can’t say enough positive things about his play.” If the short drive through the tunnel isn’t convenient enough for the Richmond native, then he also can take comfort in playing with a number of his former Seafair teammates who have

The rest of them are playing for the Richmond Sockeyes, adding more intrigue to a rivalry between the league’s top two teams. Delta has now won 16 of its last 18 games with both losses coming to Richmond. “We’re just letting them feel good before the playoffs,” Birks laughed. “They’re a good team and being a Richmond guy I do

know a lot of their players so it’s a fun rivalry. We’re saving (our best) for them in the playoffs” The Hawks used a different blueprint to get past the Pilots as they relied on Birks solid play and sound defensive hockey to produce the win without two key players. Kye Benjaminsen remains sidelined with an injury while PIJHL leading

scorer Liam Harding was tossed late in the second period after receiving a five-minute slashing major. Birks was just over three minutes away from his first shutout of the season when the Pilots equalized on the power play. That set the stage for one of Delta’s best players since Dave McLelllan took over as head coach to end the drama. Spencer Traher scored

his team-leading fifth game winner of the season on a terrific rush and shot that got past his former South Delta teammate Cole Chreptyk at the 3:30 mark of overtime. Aaron Merrick had opened the scoring back in the first period. The Ice Hawks (255-2) will now enjoy the Christmas break before resuming play Jan. 2 at Grandview.

Canadians heading to Mac tourney after sweeping Blazers Now, they will look for more success in what will be a much stiffer challenge at the 33rd annual Mac’s Tournament which gets underway on Boxing Day. Greater Vancouver will open play against the Tisdale Trojans. The round-robin schedule is highlighted with a game against former champion Russia Severstal on Dec. 28. The Calgary Royals and Leduc Oil Kings round out

the schedule. The top eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals, with the championship game slated for the Scotia Bank Saddledome on New Year’s Day. The wins over the Blazers saw Brodyn Nielsen and Carter Popoff each net hat tricks in game one. Taylor Foote, Robert Johnson, Bruce Eviston and Arwin Atwal also scored. Trevor Lima chipped in with four assists,

while Jeremy Gossard and Macoy Erkamps each had a pair of helpers. Nolan Kinney paced the attack in game two with three goals. Malcolm Glaholt and Gossard added a pair and one assist each. Jason Fram and Popoff rounded out the scoring as the Canadians opened up a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes and cruised to victory. The Canadians will begin the

new year in third place (16-6-4), five points back of the front-running Vancouver NW Giants. Icing …. It’s a busy stretch for goaltender Tristan Jarry, defenceman Macoy Erkamps and forward Nic Petan who all attend the Team B.C. three-day training camp in Richmond in preparation for the Canada Winter Games, slated for February in Halifax.

The Greater Vancouver Canadians head for Calgary on Christmas Day with some muchneeded momentum after feasting on the last place team in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. The Canadians rolled to 102 and 9-4 victories over the Thompson Blazers in Chase — marking the first time since the end of October they had managed to sweep a weekend series.

South Delta Storm captain Mitchel Walter gets roughed up in front of the Richmond net during last week’s Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Bantam rep tier II game at the Richmond Ice Centre. The hosts edged South Delta 2-1, snapping a seven-game unbeaten streak. South Delta will enter the new year with a 7-2-1 record, good enough for second place.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships, agreements, negotiations, relocation, opportunities, dealings with the public, and love. This area has become the prime one of your life, and will remain so to at least 2024. You’ve already discovered that others are more stubborn, yet more attractive than they were last decade, and that you must change to accommodate them. Another hint of this arrives Sunday. The choice is love or alienation: nothing in-between. Arguments might arise to midweek (Wednesday). Be diplomatic! Romance, exciting meetings arise Wednesday to Friday. Woo someone! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sweet love and a winning streak fill the weeks ahead! If single, you’ll definitely be attracted to someone. An “instant wedding” could occur. However, realize two things: one, anyone first met (or affair begun) Sunday through Wednesday will always contain jealousy or resentment; and two, in general, loves begun between 2004 and next March (2011) will tend toward unpredictable surprises and sudden changes. Take care with money Monday/ Tuesday. Friends, travel and communications veer toward success Thursday/Friday. Home, family, or an intimate crowd please you most Friday eve, Saturday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious – show talents, display support for others, work hard, protect projects, but launch new ideas, ventures Thursday onward, not before. Sunday will be chore-filled. Relationships loom in importance Monday/Tuesday, but friction is more prevalent than harmony. Realize this is not your decade to win wars – battles maybe, not wars. (On the other hand, you can hop on an elevator of accomplishment if you co-operate.) Deep changes, finances, intimacy and health factors head for a successful conclusion Wednesday to Friday. Delays end! Saturday’s gentle, happy and wise! Taurus April 20-May 20: Wider understanding, compassion, love, far travel, legal matters, advertising, statistics, insurance, religion, concepts, higher education – these come to the fore. Life feels more serene. Still, there are numerous problems Sunday to Wednesday morning – in these very areas. These are complex, subtle problems, in which solutions and causes seem to mingle. Your best approach, unless you have a clear idea, is to sit and wait it out. Recent delays end by Thursday, so you can march forth in relationships, love, negotiations and contracts this day forward. Friday morning’s lucky for these! Gemini May 21-June 20: Mysteries, secrets, psychological depths, intimacy, sexual yearnings, subconscious promptings, large finances, investments and debt, lifestyle changes and commitments – these fill your days over the weeks ahead. Don’t start anything (especially in these areas) before Thursday. You would get caught in an eternal circling around a problem. But Thursday onward promises success. (However, realize this is not a big investment year, with the exception of investment in your own career/ business.) Health matters are significant for several weeks. Enlist a doctor, if needed. Relationships please Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays end Thursday. Don’t start anything before then. This week and the next few nudge you into domestic surroundings and a restful stance. Various problems arise Sunday to Wednesday. You might decide to end a relationship. This is complex, with pluses and minuses. If you feel a calm, quiet disappointment about this situation, that’s your answer. Sunday provides one more clue that this decade focuses on a deep, major change of home. That might be a change of address, or other change. It’s necessary, so flow with it. Chase money Thursday through Friday morning: your luck’s high! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Don’t start any projects or relationships before Thursday. Communications, travel, casual friendships, paperwork and details fill this week and the next few – they will transform this entire decade. Shorter-term, problems and flaws become apparent in these Sunday to Wednesday, connected to work issues or more private, secret shortcomings. Well, work with a good heart. By Wednesday p.m. your energy and charisma rise, and you’re headed toward success, harmony, even love, by Friday daytime! Friday night and Saturday are easy, sensual, good for spending and wooing (not necessarily linked). Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings, spending, selling, possessions and rote learning. A major change rolls slowly through this zone all this decade and half of next. You can build a castle of money! Sunday holds a clue, probably involving your career, ambitions or status. You’re happy Monday to Wednesday, but you face problems and barriers in money and social wishes: be patient. Though you’re tired Thursday/Friday, luck accompanies government or school applications, spiritual and charity efforts. Your energy and charisma rise in time for a New Year’s party! Recent delays end.

Ads continued on next page

Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and confidence surge – for a few weeks. But don’t start anything before Thursday. Until then, handle two concerns: one, you must decide between ending or investing further (more time/effort) in a particular ambition or career direction. If you can’t decide, wait until Thursday/Friday, when you’ll get a lucky glimpse of your future, and how to get there. The second concern is more important, and centres on Sunday: your entire “self” is changing: what you want, and want to be. Think this through Sunday, ponder, take your thoughts seriously. All is good! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to lie low, rest and contemplate for the few weeks ahead. You’ll deal with government agencies, institutions or charitable agencies. Be spiritual. Plan for the future – but don’t make any plans before Thursday. Sunday to Wednesday contains a few subtle hints that your inner world needs transformation. Perhaps your inner anger doesn’t “fit” your larger sense of right and wrong. What’s out of kilter? Be ambitious Thursday through Friday morning – your efforts could end with a stroke of luck! Your social side and optimism emerge just in time for New Years! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes come true, flirtations invite you and your popularity rises – this week and the next couple. Plans and optimism hover around money and possessions. However, proceed cautiously before Thursday – start nothing, not even a relationship. And realize your hopes and your “net worth” are not in agreement – and “net worth” has the final say. Your hopes need a revision, as Sunday will show (subtly or not). When your view turns unselfish, turns to wider topics such as real love, true luck and success enter – Thursday into Friday morning. Saturday’s ambition is achievable! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
