Complaints as noisy as planes Councillor says YVR’s efforts to reduce aircraft noise are paying dividends, although some would disagree BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Vancouver International Airport is making noticeable efforts to minimize airplane noise from disturbing South Delta residents, said Coun. Robert Campbell. “I live in the same neighbourhood as these letter writers. I’m going to stick my neck out and say I do not share their experience,” he said during a presentation by YVR officials. Campbell said noise from YVR over the last few years has, in fact, diminished thanks to initiatives that have been undertaken. “I think YVR should be commended for its job on this issue and when I’ve heard complaints the first thing I do is go on WebTrak and look it up and some of these things I just can’t understand how there’s a real complaint
in there. “I understand some people are more sensitive to noise than others, but I’m satisfied everyone is doing their best to manage those issues and I personally find I hear less airplane noise than I did five, six years ago. I don’t hear it in the middle of the night like I used to. I don’t hear it in the morning.” During the presentation to council, Anne Murray, YVR’s vice-president of community and environmental affairs, and aircraft noise and emissions specialist Mark Chang explained some of the initiatives underway to decrease noise from jet aircraft flying over residential areas. Transport Canada approved the airport’s five-year noise manage-
ment plan last year, which contains 16 initiatives put together with input from an aeronautical noise management committee that includes a Delta resident and civic staff member. Chang pointed out the airport has “a very sophisticated” noise tracking system with 20 monitoring terminals. Four new terminals were added last year, including one in Tsawwassen, joining two existing sites in North Delta. The airport also recently acquired a portable noise monitoring device that was used this summer in parts of South Surrey and North Delta as well as Vancouver. The equipment was most recently set up in Ladner and that data will be analyzed early next year, noted
Chang. Meantime, a new facility will soon open to reduce noise from nighttime maintenance work on aircraft testing their engines at the airport. Yet another initiative, which began this year at YVR, noted Chang, is quarterly noise information seminars that are free to the public. Regarding the ongoing concerns over overhead aircraft disturbing South Delta residents at night, Coun. Anne Peterson said there had been a previous discussion between council and YVR about flights taking place between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., the time most cargo planes depart or land. Noting YVR is a 24/7 operation, Chang said nighttime routings are in effect for pilots. One of the measures in place is a preferential runway system to ensure pilots take advantage of
Robert Campbell Noise has diminished flying over the water as much as possible during the night hours, he explained. “Wind and weather permitting, we want to keep as much traffic out over the Strait of Georgia as much as possible,” said Chang. See NOISE page 3

Fees lowered in bid to get suites legal Utility charges discounted by $300 as only a dozen property owners have started process since bylaw passed BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta will lower utility fees for secondary suites in an attempt to convince more owners to register their units. Delta council agreed with a staff recommendation last week to grant a $300 discount for legalized suites, dropping the fee from $800 to $500. According to a report, only a dozen property owners have started the process to legalize their suites since council passed a bylaw
legalizing secondary suites in all residential zones earlier this year. Prior to the bylaw, Delta’s finance department had already identified 2,477 properties in which secondary suites were known to exist Not all those suites are rented out, however, as some are used by family members and the occupants of those homes have full access to the primary residential unit. As for the rented suites, 1,432 are already paying the additional $800 fee.
Delta’s database has 3,320 files related to another 2,650 confirmed secondary suites and 670 other properties where a bylaw inspector is in the process of determining whether a suite exists. The planning department, however, believes there may be as many as 7,000 secondary suites in Delta. The report to council notes some suite owners view the additional utility charge as a disincentive to legalize their units. Lowering the fee will result in a $429,000 reduc-
tion in revenue for Delta from the utility fees already collected from existing registered suites. Council was told that for every five suites that have reduced utility fees, three new ones would have to be identified to make up the loss. Finance director Karl Preuss noted Delta would have to identify 400 additional suites in order to make up the added costs of the program, including the extra staff hired. All suites can be legal if they pay utility fees and meet certain safety and
building code requirements. “For many years the municipality has been accepting people paying the utility fees for a suite but there’s been nothing with respect to inspecting homes to make sure they’re safe. We have a responsibility as local government to ensure we’re collecting for the right reason and it’s not a tax grab,” said CAO George Harvie. However, another reason for the delay in registering suites is the perceived cost to bring them up to code, the report noted.
“The safety issue exists anyways and we’ve turned a blind eye to it for 15, 20 years now. We said we know secondary suites exist and we kind of ignored them and if someone complained we got around to it,” said Coun. Robert Campbell. Coun. Ian Paton supported the recommendation to reduce municipal utility charges, but worried homeowners might consider the cost of bringing their suites up to code too prohibitive and might just shut them down.

Mailbox vandalized in Ladner BY

Delta police are warning the public to follow up on their holiday mailings after a mailbox was vandalized overnight in Ladner. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the department received a call Thursday morning about vandalism to one of the two mailboxes outside Pharmasave in Ladner Harbour Centre. The postal box had been damaged and mail was strewn about. The mailbox was last emptied at around 4 p.m. Wednesday and the damage was not noticed until about 9 a.m. Thursday. Brooks said it is unclear whether any mail was taken. Police are suggesting anyone who dropped their mail in that box between those hours should follow up with the intended recipients to ensure it arrived. PHOTO BY

NOISE from page 1 Coun. Bruce McDonald said Delta must remain vigilant with NAV Canada when it comes to pilots “taking the lazy way” on their way to the airport.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities recently agreed to study the issue of noise caused by airport
operations in urban areas, holding public meetings to hear from those in affected communities and experts. In a recent interview, Tsawwassen resident Ron Wasik with AANOID (Against Aircraft Noise in Delta) said aircraft noise
in South Delta from YVR and regional airports has increased. Looking forward to providing information to the federal committee, Wasik said NAV Canada’s unwillingness to do environmental assessments and its “wall

Cookies ... Milk ... Smoke Alarm! • Smoke Alarms
This Christmas, give your family and friends a gift that saves lives ... a smoke alarm. Most fatal fires take place at night, while you and your family are asleep - when seconds can make the difference between life and death. If you have one or more working smoke alarms in your home you double your chances of surviving a fire. Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. And a caution ... Never borrow a battery from a smoke alarm for use in a toy or gadget!
• Candle Care
Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the holiday season. They can also be a source of fire in your home, so be cautious with them. Place candles in non-tip candle holders and ensure they are well away from the Christmas tree and other holiday decorations. Never leave lit candles unattended and ensure that they are out of reach of children!

• Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights
Most Christmas fires can be prevented. If purchasing a livecut tree, test it for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground. If needles fall or can be pulled off easily the tree is too dry. AT home, find a cool spot for your tree, away from heater vents and the fireplace. Keep your tree as fresh as possible by watering it often. You can also reduce the risk of fire by installing cooler mini lights, or the new LED type lights. Inspect your strings of lights for wear or damage. If interior/exterior lights are worn or frayed - replace them. Never leave the lights on while you sleep or are away from the home. Limiting the use of warm lights also helps to extend the freshness of a live-cut tree!
• Kitchen Fire Safety
12187401
Practice fire safety in the kitchen this holiday season. Never leave cooking food unattended and if you are faced with a grease fire, remember - put a lid on it and turn the heat source off! Always turn pot handles to the back of the stove so pots won’t be pulled or knocked off. If you don’t already own a kitchen fire extinguisher ... DON’T WAIT! Get one now as a pre-season gift for your whole family! Enjoy the holidays and stay fire safe!
Saip re-elected board chair by fellow Delta school trustees District doing a good job, he says, despite ongoing financial challenges BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Delta school board’s focus will continue to be on running the best school district in B.C., says board chair Dale Saip. Re-elected as chair for a third straight year by his fellow trustees this week, Saip addressed some of the challenges and opportunities facing the district in an interview with the Optimist. “The business part of it does take up a lot of our time, but the reality is we are doing a really good job of increasing our graduation rates and the kids are getting what they deserve.” Faced with a $4 million shortfall this past April, the school board approved an operating budget that contained deep staffing cuts but no school closures. Saip said it’s anticipated the budget shortfall next spring will be somewhat similar depending on enrollment numbers. “We’ve made plans to accommodate that and we’re trying to ease ourselves into this thing. So given that, basing our projections on current funding levels, I think we will manage it.” Former superintendent Steve Cardwell, now in the same capacity with the Vancouver school district, made news recently when his report to trustees there recommended five schools on the chopping block remain open. Cardwell also recommended a moratorium on closures, until at least March 1, 2012. Some Delta parents contacted the Optimist as

Saying it’s interesting the Vancouver board will have a moratorium until after the next election, Saip maintains the decision here was a thoroughly considered and a responsible one. “I look at the Vancouver board and while they are entitled to do what they want and how they want to do it, I think their decision is very shortsighted and doesn’t really address the issue they have 10,000 empty spaces in that community. So they’re putting buildings ahead of children.” The Delta district has been involved in a number of undertakings to increase revenues and bring in more students, including adding a pair of specialty academies this year.
Looking ahead to what else is in store, Saip said strategic planning continues to take place for district facilities. He also noted announcements will be made about initiatives involving “greening” and “reducing the carbon footprint” of facilities in the coming months. As far as the enrollment challenges, Saip said it’s unfortunate the Tsawwassen Area Plan got stalled. “The community as a whole is going to have to step up and make a decision on what it wants to have happen. It’s a community decision to not have growth or not have a plan that commits to an increase to the school population or encourages it. “We’re an expensive place to live and there is not a lot of affordable housing, and there’s going to be consequences to pay down the road. It’s a reality, but as a trustee I’m committed to try to make sure we’re as realistic and sensitive to the

community as possible, but there’s tough decisions to be made.” Electromagnetic fields from higher voltage power lines running over South Delta Secondary continue to be an issue as a local resident who has been conducting his own measurements recently had those numbers come to the attention of Delta council. Former Delta school board chair Heather King, now a civic councillor, said at a recent Delta council meeting she’s concerned the school district limited its own testing to just once annually because of financial constraints. Questioning the numbers brought forward, Saip, noting he’d rather to speak to King directly on the issue, said the board still hires a company to conduct measurements, but does so less frequently because the numbers are around the same as when the power lines were installed and the testing was more frequent.

Landfill’s impact on Burns Bog to be studied
Concerns expressed that double ditch containment system in place to control leachate might not be sufficient JESSICA KERR
Delta council approved a study this week that will assess the impact of the Vancouver Landfill on Burns Bog. Concerns were raised earlier this year at a meeting between the municipality and members of the Burns Bog Scientific Advisory Panel about the double ditch leachate containment system at the landfill in East Ladner, which is adjacent to Burns Bog. Leachate is liquid that moves through, or drains from, a landfill. It can be created when rainwater mixes with chemical waste or it may already exist in the landfill. Leachate can be virtually harmless or toxic, depending on the material in the landfill. Currently, the landfill has a double ditch system set up to contain any leach-
ate. The system consists of an inner leachate ditch and an outer ditch filled with ground water. The water level of the outer ditch is kept higher than the leachate ditch to ensure water is
always flowing into, not out of, the landfill. However, there are concerns the current system might not be enough. On Monday night, Delta’s civic politicians approved
is escaping from the double ditch system, or whether airborne dust is impacting the adjacent bog,” said Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment.

The woman who was arrested and charged after the body of her newborn baby was found in the Vancouver Landfill in Ladner earlier this year pleaded guilty this week. Courtney D. Taylor, 20, of Surrey, appeared in Richmond Provincial Court Tuesday. Crown spokesman Neil MacKenzie said Taylor was charged with “disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal the fact that she had been delivered of it” after Richmond RCMP found the body of a baby boy in the landfill after three days of searching. At the time of Taylor’s arrest, Richmond RCMP said the full-term baby was born at her boyfriend’s Richmond apartment on Jan. 31. Police were told the baby was not breathing and was blue when he was born. Richmond RCMP believe Taylor and her boyfriend, a Richmond man, disposed of the baby by wrapping him up in a towel, putting him in a garbage bag and putting the body in a dumpster. By the time police learned of the baby’s disposal, the dumpster had already been taken to the landfill. With files from Postmedia News

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in South Delta between Sunday, Dec. 5 and Monday, Dec. 13: Tsawwassen • December 7, 8:45 p.m., 1800-block of 56th Street: A local business had its alarm go off. The police weren’t notified. The alarm company notified the contact for the business who attended to check it out. When he arrived he noticed a key in the door lock. He walked through the business but did not notice anything missing. He secured the business and left. When an employee arrived the next morning he found the cash register that contained $500 cash was missing. • December 8, 6:15 a.m., 4800-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported he looked out his window when his dog was barking and observed the interior light on in his truck. Once outside he saw a male fleeing the area on a bike. The vehicle, which had been left unlocked, had been rifled through but nothing was missing. • December 8, 4:30 p.m., 4900-block of Stevens Drive: Sometime overnight
a thief stole the rear licence plate from the complainant’s vehicle parked in the driveway. • December 10, 6:30 p.m., 400-block of Shannon Way: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his residence had been broken into and several items were missing, including a $1200 Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop computer, $500 Esquire men’s black face and diamond watch and two $300 Wii gaming controllers. It appeared that entry to the residence was through an unlocked sliding door. • December 13, 10:20 p.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported hearing glass break in the front window of a local business. He then saw two males quickly drive away in an older dark green Jeep. A 42-inch black LG flat screen TV valued at $800 was stolen. The vehicle is believed to be the same one that was later reported stolen from the 4400-block of 45th Street. Still under investigation. Ladner • December 5, 1:30 p.m., 3200-block of 72nd Street:
Complainant reported that camera equipment valued at $3,000 was stolen from his vehicle parked by the dike near the Boundary Bay Airport. As there was no sign of forced entry, the complainant thought he might have left the vehicle unlocked. • December 6, 8 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: The manager of a grocery store reported that an inventory check had confirmed someone had stolen a large number of electric toothbrushes and razor blades. Persons of interest were observed leaving the store and video surveillance information will be examined. Still under investigation. • December 7, 9:30 p.m., 6100-block of Ferry Road: Complainant reported that an inflatable boat was stolen from his yacht docked at the marina. Valued at $3,000, it is described as a grey Bombard with black trim and wooden floorboards. • December 7, 1:11 p.m., 4300-block of 104th Street: Complainant reported his rear licence plate was stolen
from his vehicle parked in front of his residence. The information entered on the police national computer system. • December 8, 8:20 a.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: While making a purchase at a local coffee shop the complainant left her purse open. A short time later she noticed her wallet was missing. The wallet is described as a Matt and Natt and contains credit cards, bank card, driver’s licence and $20 cash. Video surveillance to be examined. • December 9, 7:52 a.m., 4400-block of Dawn Drive: A report was received that a suspicious male carrying a knife on the street was observed by a neighbour. Police attended the residence of the suspect who indicated he was carrying a machete for no specific reason and agreed to relinquish the weapon voluntarily. Crime Beat will take a two-week hiatus over the Christmas season. The next installment will run Jan. 8.

The B.C. auditor general’s report found the Agricultural Land Commission has too few staff and enforcement tools to protect ALR land from being damaged by unauthorized actions, including the dumping of construction material.
Boutique Blanches
The government has to provide better resources and funding for the Agricultural Land Commission so it can carry out a mandate to protect farmland. Metro Vancouver’s board of directors agreed this month to communicate that message to the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands as well as invite ministry representatives to meet with the regional district’s agriculture committee to discuss the concerns. The Metro board conveyed its concerns about the ability of the ALC to do its job after reviewing a recently released report by the auditor general. It had a scathing assessment of how the land commission can’t effectively preserve lands in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The report found the ALC simply doesn’t have the budget to adequately protect land from damage through compliance and enforcement as well as adequately evaluate and report on its effectiveness. The report also notes that since 2002/03, the budget for the ALC decreased almost $3 million to just over $2 million. However, the workload associated with the application process to exclude land from the ALR has not eased while the necessity to improve compliance and enforcement has grown, as has the value of evaluating the impact of decisions.
Hamilton at the time. Delta’s agricultural advisory committee, meanwhile, is undertaking a new farm plan and has hired a consultant to come up with recommendations. Local farmers have been consulted. Mayor Lois Jackson, who chairs the committee, said improving the viability of soil-based farming needs to be addressed at the local and regional district level. Jackson, who chairs the Metro Vancouver board, said those issues and recommendations will be outlined in the region’s new regional growth strategy, which, hopefully, will finally get approval early next year. “We have the term ‘viability’ in there because it’s not just the land you have to save. We have to ensure farmers have to have the ability to make a living at farming,” said Jackson. “With the increases with things like the water rates, for instance, we’re saying it’s getting more and more difficult to be a farmer and have a living that would compare with someone that’s living in the city,” she said.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW This boat left without them. Now that civic officials have finally got around to legalizing secondary suites, one would presume there would be a flood of applications at municipal hall. All those people that wanted to create a suite but were waiting until it was legal to do so would be in line, as would those who had jumped the gun in developing one and now wanted to be on the up and up. You’d think the pent up demand for legal suites after all this time would have municipal employees run off their feet. It’s not turning out that way. After passing legislation earlier this year, Delta reports that all of a dozen — and by a dozen, I mean 12 — property owners have begun the process of legalizing their suites. That’s hardly the stampede this supposedly watershed decision was to create. That’s because this issue was sorted out in the marketplace long before civic politicians and staff finally made their decision. Delta’s reluctance to deal with secondary suites didn’t prevent them from being created; its turn-a-blind-eye policy simply drove the issue underground. Before passing the bylaw, Delta was already charging extra utility fees on more than 1,400 suites even though the accommodation was considered illegal, so to be fair to municipal hall, it did have a handle on some of the units out there. However, its own estimates peg the number of suites as high as 7,000, which suggests Delta is woefully behind in the regulatory department. To make matters worse, suites have become so ingrained in the community that many of the possible advantages to legalizing them won’t be realized or already have been. The notion that an influx of suites will increase the rental inventory and make home ownership more affordable thanks to legal “mortgage helpers” is wishful thinking given the vast majority of people inclined to develop suites have already done so. The argument that legalizing them will ensure all units are brought up to code and utility fees are paid is another fallacy. It’s one thing for owners to do that at the outset, but when you already have tenants and a cash flow, I’m dubious of the sudden desire to embrace regulations and greater overhead. If it had been done earlier, like when the issue was such a hot topic it was our Newsmaker of the Year, the move to legalize secondary suites would have paid far greater dividends. When you deal with 1998’s issue in 2010, however, the benefits are more modest.
Getters on Christmas morning become givers soon enough MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT It takes a few years to figure out that Christmas is about giving. Don’t fool yourself, when you are a kid, Christmas is all about getting! Toddlers are pretty happy just to wade around in waste deep balls of wrapping paper on Christmas morning. By the time you are three, though, you have a pretty good handle on the whole Santa thing. You know that when the fat man comes down the chimney he’s bringing you stuff, lots of stuff. From three to around 10 are the glory years for getting. Me, me, me is the mantra of the young Santa worshipper. I get a real kick out of talking to these Santa zombies in the peak of the season. As soon as the lights start twinkling in the evening, and the ads for toys are on mega loop on the TV, the fever in the getters intensifies.
As the big day draws closer, leniency on the food front sets in and visits to friends and family yield all manner of pop, chocolates and baked goodies. Sugar-fueled anticipation is wonderfully heightened and the tiny eyes become bug-eyed with happiness. Crude verbal and written wish lists are created and added to as items are suddenly deemed to be crucial must haves! I remember one of my younger brothers telling me that if he didn’t get a Major Matt Mason from Santa he was going to move. Craig was five at the time. Those were the good ol’ days. You didn’t know any better and that is OK. You only get to be the omnipotent benefactor for a couple of years. When you hit double digits you begin to understand a little more about the giving part. It dawns on you that, hey, I have been getting all these cool gifts and I haven’t given one in my life. I was lucky to have a paper route and a little bit of dough when this defining moment came for me and, to be honest, I felt a little guilty about the whole thing so I was going to make sure that mom and dad got something from me

this year. I felt so enlightened that I decided my younger brothers should get in to the deal to chip in. They were still in full “get” mode so the give part came grudgingly when I held them upside down and shook for loose change. We cobbled together almost 20 bucks and took the bus from Kerrisdale to Richmond Centre. This was before amber alert, or any kind of alert really. We just disappeared from the neighbourhood for a couple of hours without telling anyone. That is what you did back then. Once at the mall, it didn’t take long. There it was in Hudson’s Bay. It was the most beautiful lava lamp imaginable! Craig and Dave didn’t really care one way or the other but me, in my first mature act as a giver, fully understood the magnificence and supreme utility of the lamp. On Christmas morning, Santa and mom and dad delivered the goods as usual. We were so very proud when mom and dad opened our one gift. They were all smiles. It didn’t really matter what it was, or how much it cost, we were just happy to be able to give it. Merry Christmas everyone!

Time’s not right for councillors to be getting a raise
Editor: Re: Not time to hold out your hand, Murphy’s Law, Dec. 11 It’s true, a 2.5 per cent increase doesn’t seem like a lot, but, as Ted Murphy points out, when put together with other raises over the last three years, it amounts to 30 per cent. I would like to know anyone in the private sector
that got anything close 30 per cent. I doubt that very much because companies don’t have Joe Public’s unending tax source. The last I heard the food banks were getting more and more people because of a tough economy in B.C. I doubt very much any of the councillors have ever been in that situation. Just because one munici-
pality gives its civic politicians a raise doesn’t mean every municipality has to follow like sheep. It’s about time these people wake up to fact people will take only so much. Maybe the only way these people will understand is if we, as the only source of funds, decide not to pay any more taxes. I realize we ask for a lot
of services from the taxes we pay, so we also have to stop asking for so much from the municipality. It is a two-way street. We both have to use common sense. I would advise civic politicians to back off from taking the 2.5 per cent increase until the financial situation in this province gets a lot better for the average family. That may take a lot lon-
ger then we think. Maybe when the food banks are not being used by so many people the politicians of Delta can take a raise. Mayor Lois Jackson, you and your councillors should be ashamed of yourselves for asking for any increase until the food banks see a decrease in the need. I challenge councillors
to step back from their increase and also donate part of their paycheque to the food bank. If they already do, good on you. I donate once a month at Safeway and Thrifty Foods. So, as Murphy asked of you, be a leader and not a taker of these tight tax dollars that can only provide so much. Robert Slomen

Some years ago my father disappeared in his airplane. I went through every government agency to try and obtain tapes that were filed away that might possibly help me locate him. I was turned down by every agency within Ottawa. I then contacted a noted journalist that put incredible pressure on one particular agency. Soon it relented, I obtained the tapes and within a month I found my father’s remains. I tell you this because it is about a journalist that wasn’t afraid of the establishment. Ron Brown

is being a journalist? Were they keeping their mouths shut because they wanted to rally around the flag? To be complicit or simply stepping aside and hiding the truth from the public is not being a journalist that I want to see or hear. In Canada, our journalists on the whole, and with very few exceptions, are generally truthful. We ask for them to inform us as to what is going on throughout the world and within our country, even if the truth hurts. We have a right to know and thus we are able to make up our own minds.

Editor: Re: Journalists fail to rally around the flag, letter to the editor, Dec 11 I think every journalist in Canada should give themselves a pat on their backs. Informing the citizenry to what is going on in the world and, more importantly, with your government is truly being Canadian. Even if this includes parts of the recent Wikileaks papers. million. Compare this with the $1.4 billion, 11-kilometre Evergreen Line. The RftV/Leewood Report has been very well received overseas, yet locally, this very important study has been all but ignored. TransLink has treated the RftV/Leewood Report with disdain as it continues to plan for multi-billion-dollar metro lines the taxpayer just can’t afford. Gerald Fox, an American transit expert commenting on the Evergreen Line, observed that, “... Vancouver will need to adopt lower-cost LRT in its lesser corridors, or else limit the extent of its rail system. And that seems to make some TransLink people very nervous.” For the cost of the 11-

Editor: While local mayors bicker with TransLink over the funding of yet another grossly expensive metro line for the region, Rail for the Valley, in association with Leewood Projects in the UK, have provided the region with a far cheaper alternative: a TramTrain transit plan for the South Fraser region. The 84-page RftV/ Leewood report found that a basic service (three trains an hour each direction), 98kilometre Scott Road Station to Chilliwack LRT TramTrain could be implemented for as little as $492 million, while a full build, 138-kilometre Vancouver/Richmond to Rosedale service could be had for as little as $998.5

HST overshadows far more important issue: SFPR
Editor: The HST issue seems to be front and centre just everywhere in B.C. and while it is important, a far more important issue has been pushed to the back pages of people’s minds where it sits, unloved and, for many, in a cranium wasteland. While one has been shepherded by a former B.C. premier and resident of Ladner, the other languishes out of sight without a champion to shoulder aside all political/bureaucratic opposition. Perhaps it is that there is more political
mileage to be gained from fronting a much-misunderstood tax than there is to being a champion who stands tall and fast against a governmental fraud that robs South Delta of valuable farmland that appears to eroded more each day. I write, of course, about the South Fraser Perimeter Road [SFPR]. Not only the SFPR, but also Burns Bog. While the government has put forward all manner of slick comment to illustrate the need [in its opinion] for the SFPR and has shouted its decision from the rooftops, that same
government has given the back of its hand to a more sensible, better engineered and no more expensive alternative. This, of course, is the Hoover-Naas proposal that was pooh-poohed by the provincial government and derided as being a less-than-quality proposal. Anyone who has had the opportunity to read and compare the two proposals will realize immediately the government’s proposal [and to this date, much executed undertaking] is inferior to Hoover-Naas. Where is the champion
to lead the way back from the government’s wilderness and into the realm of sensibility and understanding for the many residents of South Delta who will be sorely affected by this arrogant government’s dictatorial fiats? Where are the exprovincial cabinet ministers and/or MLAs when they are needed most? Where is the loud and clear outcry from South Deltans in particular but all residents of B.C. in general? Make no mistake, this SFPR boondoggle will have a financial impact on each of the many MLAs’ ridings.
IT’S HERE!
The public expenditure to cover the bloated costs of the SFPR will be borne by all residents of B.C.; yet, nary a peep out of the subservient government MLAs and not even a ghost of an outcry from the NDP. No, the silliness that is the HST takes first place among the electorate of this province at the expense of valuable farmland that will be lost forever as the once fertile farms are paved over to accommodate an influx of belching trucks as they trundle along the roadway hauling imported foodstuffs that were once produced by those same farms. Burns Bog, described as the lungs of the Lower Mainland, is in danger of having a hefty chunk torn from its roots just to satisfy that same government fiat. It has been recognized that Burns Bog is unique and
P
ought not to be trampled with or paved over. Granted, the government claims that only a wee piece on the fringe will be affected by the SFPR. One has to ask, has this arrogant government ever told a fib before? Just think of the HST for an answer. So, is it to be more noise about HST or will there be a sensible approach taken to remedy the intrusion that is the SFPR? It is up to Deltans in particular and all residents of B.C. in general to make themselves more aware of the horror that is the SFPR. Learn how this toe-in-the-door approach might just end up being the elephant in the room. It’s up to British Columbians. Will they run away and hide or will they step forward and fight the good fight? Bob Orrick

DFO is controlling agenda of salmon inquiry Department’s inability to manage Fraser River sockeye should be at issue, but probe is focusing elsewhere
MP’S REPORT The Cohen Inquiry has Brian Riddell’s fingerprints all over it. DFO insiders are controlling the Inquiry’s agenda and are the agenda. Perhaps nothing speaks to DFO’s power over the Cohen Inquiry than the role played by Riddell. First Riddell advised the commission on its staffing and recommended it focus its time and money on science rather than DFO management.

The department has been allowed to turn a judicial inquiry into a private shop talk on its organization, policies and management rather than accountability sessions on its failures to manage the fishery. A long list of DFO and former DFO officials have appeared before the inquiry. All have assured the commission the department has managed the fishery well given difficult circumstances. they drank the Kool-aid. They have been in awe of DFO officials, the very people who have made it clear time and again their inability to manage the fishery. Cohen’s gift to DFO of sitting in judgment on its own track record is about as good as it gets. The Cohen Inquiry has provided DFO a great opportunity to preen and strut and is a windfall for high paid lawyers, but it is not so great for the salmon.

Now over a year since the inquiry was established, there has been no evidence of any attempt to hold DFO to account. Cohen has not made even a token effort to bring forward a few knowledgeable critics of DFO. Cohen and his staff have bought into DFO’s agenda right from the beginning;

In February he returns as a witness on an expert panel on over-escapement Riddell’s role in the public hearings is symptomatic of what has become a DFO dog and pony show. He and his cohorts at DFO have helped structure the inquiry with carefully selected panels of DFO staff that preclude any opportunity for critics of DFO to have any meaningful input. These are expert panels of insiders all moving in lock step with no one to seriously challenge the

A night behind the wheel with Operation Red Nose BY
ANA ARCINIEGA

It wasn’t easy, but I finally did it! After years of being involved in other ways, my husband and I were two of about 40 souls who volunteered to drive for Operation Red Nose last Saturday night. Although it was quite a challenge to stay up until 3:30 a.m., it was an eyeopening experience. The evening began with training and camaraderie. Like any team experience, the veterans regaled the rookies with some amusing tales and a few hair-raising stories. With a third person on our team and donning our distinctive red vests, we went to visit the pubs and restaurants on our list to raise awareness and answer questions about the program, many of which were not even on our FAQ manual as pub guests proved to be a creative bunch. Before we knew it, the first call came in and we
were sent to pick up a client from a Christmas party. As I was the “navigator,” I had to familiarize myself quickly with the paperwork involved, utilize the cell phone we were given and attempt to program the portable GPS we brought along. My husband was driving the clients’ vehicles and our third team member was the “escort driver.” It was not very long into our first ride that I noticed the following: some addresses cannot be found on GPS, that Delta/ Richmond is indeed a very big geographic area and, most interestingly, that I got incredibly car sick when I had to do anything other than look at the blurry horizon. It was only 9:45 p.m. As the night rolled on, the three of us found our own rhythm in our roles, including keeping my dinner where it belonged. We found ourselves picking up all sorts of people, some visibly over the limit but many simply making a responsible choice. And sure enough, as the veterans had promised, the stories started to reveal themselves that night, especially for my husband who was driving and interacting with those that were awake enough to make conversation.
He didn’t get to drive an exotic car but he did drive the biggest pick up truck ever. The two of us in the escort car speculated who they were as we followed and we inquired about the details once he came back in the car. We soon realized that even though clients came in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds, they were exactly the same in that they all wanted to arrive safely to their homes. So finally our last call came through. We tallied our paperwork and realized our team gave eight rides to over 15 people and raised close to $150 in tips towards the new building for Delta Gymnastics. Even though we were extremely tired and we only wanted to hit our beds as soon as possible, we felt we had done something special. That was especially true when I remembered about one client we had picked up earlier that night who had two beautiful little girls. They kept inquiring on their way back home, “Daddy, daddy, why is this man driving your car?” The answer became very clear: Because he loves them very much. Re-gifting There is only one gift to be given and received, the story of God appearing on earth in human form, and whose birth in a stable in a far away land, we remember and celebrate at this time of the year. That gift we cannot reciprocate, we can only graciously accept; but we can in good conscience regift that gift over, and over, again because it is the gift that keeps on giving! As you share your own story of love, acceptance, faith and hope, it becomes the most personal thing you can give, and no one will mind receiving that re-gifted offering, or sharing it again. May you give, receive and share the gift of Jesus this Christmas. Blessings and peace to all.

It is the day before Christmas, the doorbell rings and standing before you is your neighbour with a gift for you. You have not exchanged gifts before, but now the precedent has been set, should you reciprocate? You do not want to face the mall again, so what do you do? Is it OK to re-gift? Can you scramble to the back of a cupboard to find a serving platter that you received two birthdays ago and have never actually used? Can you repackage the bathroom set you were given last year? Do you really have to give a gift in return at all? Is it better to just admit that you got caught unprepared and receive the package gracefully? The good news is that Christmas isn’t really about matching offerings.

For the past 11 years Kingdom Harvest Ministries International, which is run out of Tsawwassen, has been working in Central America helping to build orphanages and assisting children. One of the projects the group undertakes is called Christmas With A Purpose. This year KHMI sent a full container of supplies to Guatemala to assist the Casa Experanza Orphanage as well as to help people in El Salvador. One-third of the contents was for the children’s home in Guatemala, which KHMI helped build and currently houses 40 children, and the rest was for the people in

Birders sought to take part in annual Ladner count South Delta bird enthusiasts are invited to take part in the Ladner Christmas Bird Count, an annual holiday conservation activity. To be held Monday, Dec. 27, the count is one of over 2,000 scheduled to take place throughout the Americas and beyond over a two-week period. The Ladner Christmas Bird Count began in the
mid-1950s and has always been one of the top three counts for bird species seen in Canada. Open to birders of all skill levels, each area team needs people who will be drivers, recorders and spotters. People who prefer to stay home and record the number of birds using their feeders are also welcome.
The local count includes South Delta, south Richmond and Point Roberts. Each area team is led by experienced birders who will work with members to identify the birds seen. Following the count, the teams will gather at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island for a hot supper, to share details of

unicipal recreation facilities in South Delta have a number of events taking place over the holiday season. Here are some of the upcoming activities happening around town: • It’s not every day you can share the ice with Jolly Old St. Nick. Today from 3 to 5 p.m. there’s a Skate with Santa at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Mr. Claus will join everyone on the ice for a public skate. Don’t forget your camera. • Santa returns for another public skate, this time at the South Delta Recreation Centre, on Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. • The Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre has a Christmas Camp scheduled for Dec. 21 to 23 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be swimming, crafts, pool games and activities for ages five to seven (with an adult) and seven to 13.
Regular drop-in admission fees apply. • The Delta Ice Hawks will host the Abbotsford Pilots in junior ‘B’ hockey action at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Delta sits in first place in the PIJHL’s Tom Shaw Conference. Check www.deltaicehawks. com for ticket prices or more information. • The South Delta Recreation Centre hosts Winter Wonderland from Dec. 28 to Jan. 1. Stop by for some or some old-fashioned public skating on “the pond.” • Looking forward to 2011, the Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre will hold a New Year’s Camp from Dec. 29 to 31. Running from noon to 3 p.m., the camp, which will have crafts, pool games and activities, is for ages five to seven (with an adult) and seven to 13.
Regular drop-in admission fees apply. • A New Year’s Eve skate will be held at the South Delta Recreation Centre from 6 to 8 p.m. Besides the on-ice fun, there will be crafts, holiday treats, hot chocolate and a “rockin’ New Year’s Eve playlist.” • The annual Polar Bear Swim is once again set for New Year’s Day at Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen. Festivities are set to begin at noon with entertainment, children’s activities and registration for swimmers. Swimmers get to enjoy a

small herd of goats has the best view. Each evening they assemble at the top of the 12-metre high bas relief that forms the backdrop to this outdoor stage. The sculptured form of Shiva, a powerful Hindu deity, peers down from near the middle of the relief’s 30-metre width, seemingly amused at the humans twirling to
the rhythm of drums and melody of ancient wooden horns. From our stage-level seating we too are captivated. Vibrant orange and gold silk flutters with the exotic movements of winsome young women. Others dip and dive as they balance large clay pots on their heads. Most novel is a machismo display of agile men with bull-horn headdresses who leap into mid-air and butt heads with resounding cracks.
My husband Rick and I are among the spectators for the first three days of the annual National Dance Festival in Mamallapuram (aka Mahabalipuram), a village in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu. Beginning Christmas Day, and over the next four weeks 1,000 classical and folk artistes entertain international visitors, as well as vacationing Indian families taking advantage of the school break. engaging our attention in the evenings, our days are spent exploring the village. Although a predominantly Hindu country, it’s apparent that Yuletide is joyfully celebrated here. The hotels and markets are elaborately decked out with garlands, wreaths, lights strung on imitation pine trees, nativity scenes, and the occasional Santa. Seeing the exquisite bas relief in the light of day is a must. It is known as Arjuna’s Penance or Descent of the Ganges (depending on who you talk to). Our guide, Dharma, points out the key figure saying, “Arjuna is balanced on one leg with arms upraised in ‘penance’, which in the Hindu religion does not mean repentance, but rather a gaining of power over the gods.” Arjuna’s motive was to garner the sword from the towering figure of Shiva beside him, in order to kill his enemies. The second name of this relief, Descent of the Ganges stems from the huge furrow in the middle of rock that is believed to be where the god Shiva brought the holy river down to earth. It is then on to the temple ruins, which are within walking distance. En route I stop abruptly and gasp at the sight of a giant hilltop boulder that looks as if it

might tumble any minute. Children are sitting tucked under the base for the shade it provides, while others gleefully slide down the hillside in line with the boulder. “This is called Krishna’s Butterball, and don’t worry, several elephants were once used in an attempt to dislodge it, to no avail, it is immovable,” Dharma says reassuringly. He then leads us to a spot where we can see the boulder’s slight backward tilt; but regardless of physics’ laws I would not entertain being beneath its gigantic looming bulk. The Shore Temple is weathered by wind and sea, yet a remarkable amount of carvings remain, especially inside the shrines for Shiva and Vishnu. Its two pagoda-

style towers are now protected from further erosion by a rock wall. “Most of the rock-carved temples in Mamallapuram were completed in the 7th century, when this was a major port for the ruling Pallava dynasty,” Dharma says, upon entering the next site-the Five Rathas. Lions and a life-sized elephant are regally poised to guard the entrance of these monolithic temples resembling chariots. Numerous deities, as well as scenes of everyday life, such as women weaving, young girls primping and pompous dignitaries are sculpted on the stone walls. We are awed by the preservation of these spectacular monuments, which were hidden in sand until excavated by the British 200 years ago. Over a thousand years later, the tapping of hammer and chisel still goes on along the dusty streets of this village that is renowned for its stone carving. We stand riveted watching artisans chip granite blocks into animal forms and gods destined for temples around the world. On our last evening Dharma, our hotel manager, along with their families surprise us with a farewell supper in the restaurant. The extraordinary sights, sounds and activities of this Holiday Season swirl through my mind, along with the good will and friendship of the people we have encountered during this memorable Mamallapuram Christmas. foods can also be a major contributor to inflammation. Polyunsaturated oils like safflower, sunflower, corn, peanut and soy, and trans-fat and partial hydrogenated oils are inflammatory, as are high-carb, lowprotein diets (interesting to note there is research that shows low-carb diets reduce inflammation for most women). Refined sugars also jack up the insulin levels and put the immune system on high alert, and processed foods and foods with nitrates in them (like deli meats, hot dogs and smoked sausage products) should also be avoided. Reading this list of foods that inflame, it donned on me that all we really need is common sense. I mean, no one actually thinks a hot dog is good for them, do they? The great news is that exercise, eating the right foods and learning how to control your stress are excellent treatments for reducing chronic inflammation. Yoga, walking daily and weight training

nflammation. It can mean more than just a swollen ankle after a bad sprain, or a puffed up knee from one too many lunges during your last workout. Inflammation can happen throughout the body, at a cellular level, and it can have a potentially serious impact on your health. Some inflammation is good for the body. For instance, one function of inflammation is to help your body respond to stress, such as when you get a cold. Your body fights it off with inflammation in the form of a fever. When a joint becomes inflamed, it is the body’s way of telling you to lay off, it’s had enough. The inflammation we need to be most concerned about, however, is lowgrade chronic inflammation. It can age us, and age us fast! Low-grade chronic inflammation is created when the body is in a con-
stant state of stress, and if we give even a casual glance at our lifestyles, we can easily identify these stressors. Bad eating, no exercise, inability to relax, working long hours and not getting enough sleep are all stressful on the body. Most of us live like this on a daily basis, and it is this constant state of stress that is causing us a lot of health problems. Most medical professionals don’t know what comes first — the inflammation or the disease — but, either way, a lifestyle that keeps you in a constant inflammatory state could lead to: accelerated aging, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, bacterial or viral infections, osteoporosis, arthritis, acid reflux, candidiasis and acne. Likewise, if you are overweight, have persistent aches and pains, congestion, stiffness, indigestion, frequent infections, dry eyes or diarrhea, chances are also good that you are inflamed. In addition to lifestyle,

Delta Ice Hawks Spencer Traher is turned away on this third period scoring chance by Richmond Sockeyes goaltender Aaron Oakley during Paciific International Junior Hockey League action at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The Ice Hawks have lost just twice in their last 16 games, both times to the Sockeyes including Tuesday’s game, 6-3.
Sockeyes continue to dominate Ice Hawks
High flying 1st place junior “B” hockey team falls to cross-river rivals for the third time in four games this season MARK BOOTH
The rest of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League needs to be paying closer attention to what the Richmond Sockeyes are doing. The Delta Ice Hawks are enjoying one of their best regular seasons in franchise history. That’s until they run into the Sockeyes. Four weeks ago they had reeled off 10 consecutive victories before falling to their cross-river rivals. Sure enough, they took a four game win streak into Tuesday’s latest battle and the visitors promptly handed them a 6-3 loss. The win moved Richmond (21-4-3) within a point of Delta (22-5-2) for top spot in the Tom Shaw Conference with
a game in hand. Sockeyes head coach Judd Lambert will be the first to tell you it’s nothing more than a team executing its system. A closer look at the league scoring race would suggest he is right. Richmond has just two players among the top 20 — Jake Roder and Sebastian Pare at 15th and 16th respectively. Meanwhile, the Ice Hawks have the top two in Liam Harding and Cody Smith, while Spencer Traher sits 14th. Kye Benjaminsen and Cody Fidgett would also be right in the mix had they not missed a number of games. Yet, it is the Sockeyes who have been the far more the dangerous team offensively in the season series. They had six different scor-

ers Tuesday and fired 44 shots at Doug Birks, compared to just 30 for Delta. “We don’t have the firepower or the superstars to drag us along if we are playing anything less than very good,” said Lambert. “No we don’t have two players in the top 10 (of league scoring) but we do have 12 or 13 players with 10 to 12 points. Really, we are not worried about what other teams are doing. The way we play is adaptable to any team we play against. “We try to control the puck and move it to open guys with space. If it doesn’t work we will try it again.” Goals by Patrick Hunter and Mitch Smith opened up a 4-2 second period lead. Delta was finally awarded after a number of close
calls when Harding converted a rebound after a terrific rush by Traher. Just like they managed to do in the previous meeting, the Sockeyes wasted little time in answering as Pare restored the twogoal margin just 32 seconds later. That was all they would need as they blanked Delta over the final half the game and got an empty net goal from Kyzen Loo. Ice Hawks general manager Peter Zerbinos isn’t putting too much emphasis on a midDecember league game but the fact Richmond now leads the season series 3-1 certainly has his attention with the league roster deadline (Jan. 10) looming. “Defensively was a nightmare (tonight),” said Zerbinos. “When the puck is deep in our zone we
our hanging around the blueline. We’re used to scoring lots of goals and we have lots of guns but when you play another very strong team like the Sockeyes you have to play at both ends of the ice. In the meantime, the Sockeyes will keep going about their business and promise they won’t be doing anything different when the teams meet again on Jan. 13. “(The Ice Hawks) are a very opportunistic team,” added Lambert. “They have lot forwards who can put the puck in the net. It’s matter of limiting our mistakes and capitalizing on our opportunities which I think we did fairly well (tonight). It comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes especially against this team because if you do it’s in your net.”

decided to leave them on the park to try and complete their hat tricks. Sinclair netted his third, utilizing his speed in the 55th minute before being replaced by Liam Stewart. Curiel worked hard for his third, however, it looked unlikely as he requested a substitution with just minutes left in the game . As he limped to the sideline, he saw Mike Easingwood making a promising run with the ball on the opposite side of the pitch. Much to the amazement of all watching, he found the inspiration to get back in the play and sprint to the back post to one time Easingwood’s cross into the net to complete his hat trick.

The Tsawwassen Royals took advantage of a depleted opponent and an abbreviated schedule to move into top spot in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League Division 2C. The Royals produced a convincing 6-0 road win over the Cliff Ave. Senior Cobras, then later learned they had moved into first place after the heavy rain over the weekend postponed a number of matches. A solid effort was put in by all 11 starting players and substitutes as Cliff Ave had no answer for the Royals striking duo of Skafti Sinclair and Miguel Curiel. Devils perfect in league play after rare win over Warriors

They’re not even a month into their season and already the South Delta Delta Sun Devils have more significant wins than in the past three years. A week after knocking off cross-town rival Delta to claim the inaugural Stebbings/Murray Cup, the senior boys basketball team was at it again, this time

against the White Rock Christian Warriors. The Sun Devils came through with a 74-67 win to enter the Christmas break 2-0 in Fraser Valley South West League play. WRC is in a rebuilding mode after being a provincial powerhouse for over a decade. However, given where the Sun Devils program has been in the past few years, it is a significant result for the Tsawwassen
school. The hosts overcame an early 14-4 deficit and led much of the way — taking a seven-point cushion into the final quarter. However, the Warriors rallied and led 64-62 with four minutes remaining. That’s when the Devils cranked up their intensity, especially at the defensive end of the floor to outscore White Rock 12-5 the rest of the way. “We went to a 1-2-
2 zone and the kids played lights out,” said South Delta coach Steve McGilligan. “Jackson (Temple) was just terrific in the middle, shutting down everything. “It is a really big win for us. No, they aren’t as strong as in past years but it is still well-coached team and an excellent program.” Dustin Triano led the Sun Devils with 21 points. Zach Nicholls added 17.

Delta Footmen U15 girls field lacrosse team wrapped up its inaugural season the same way it started it — with a win over the Port Coquitlam Saints last weekend. A young Saints team has improved since the first game of the season, but was unable to match the speed and skill of Delta. The girls finished the regular season with an 8-1-1 record and look forward to travelling to Palm Springs next month for the Sandstorm Tournament. The team includes: Zoe Diomis, Sheila Ahmadi, Savannah Phillips, Jayme Quitzau, Zoe Jamieson, Melissa Caviglia, Georgia Larden, Michi Wu, Stephanie Cooper, Priscilla Lawson-Pires, Stephanie Minkova, Salome Dede, Erika Mackenzie, Chalane Morrison and Misa Sekikawa. The coach is PJ McAteer. Darryl Morrison is team manager.

Canadians settle for split with Rockets
Bryce Eviston and Garrett Forster had the other Greater Vancouver goals, while Jason Fram chipped in with a pair of assists. The regional rep team opened the series with a 4-0 victory, behind the shutout goaltending of Tristan Jarry. Brodyn Nielsen, Taylor Foote, Hannoun and Forster were the goalscorers. The results leave the Canadians (14-6-4) in fourth place in the league standings.

The Greater Vancouver Canadians continue to lose ground on the frontrunners of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League after only managing a split in a weekend home series against the seventh place Okanagan Rockets. Matthew Lambert’s second goal of the game with 5:22 remaining gave the Rockets a 4-3 victory on Sunday. The tally came just 20 seconds after Demico Hannoun had put the Canadians on even terms.

Aries March 21 - April 19: New projects and relationships will tend to go in circles – forever. So stay with the ongoing, finish up things that have sucked your energy for too long. Something from the past – a foreign contact, a legal, cultural or educational matter, a travel opportunity, perhaps a loved one, a wedding or divorce plan – returns now. You might as well tackle this, or more importantly, tackle the flaw that is preventing it from working. Intimacy, sex, investment and finances are mildly blessed all month: you could gain from another’s assets. Bosses, VIPs start to examine your performance. Taurus April 20-May 20: Don’t start new relationships or projects before Dec. 30. Stick with the ongoing, or reprise past involvements and opportunities. Chase money Sunday/Monday, but DON’T buy important items, especially televisions, computers, etc. A former financial opportunity might reappear, but its initial flaw has not disappeared, so stay out. Love exists, your spouse shows affection, others treat you well. Be wary of legal hassles and international travel: avoid them all month. Paperwork, talk and errands are lucky Wednesday. Settle down Thursday/Friday. Romance, beauty, pleasure come Saturday! Gemini May 21-June 20: Start nothing new, especially in contracts, agreements, marriage, partnerships, relocation, andpublicdealings.Something or someone from the past might appear in these zones: it’s probably more trouble than good. You might grow indecisive about a link. If you look deeply, you’ll see that your indecision is justified. Promise nothing, sign nothing. A month of mystery begins. Your energy perks up Sunday/Monday. Money and possessions meet barriers Tuesday, good luck Wednesday. Travel, communications go well Thursday/Friday. Home, family, security bless you Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Avoid all new starts, especially in work and health zones. An ongoing “condition” in one of these might reach a climax Monday/Tuesday – after this, the atmosphere changes: fresh horizons, fresh new people and opportunities (and challenges and competitors) arrive. Still, start nothing new yourself, before Dec. 30. Lie low, rest, contemplate and be charitable Sunday/Monday. (Being charitable when you’re “down” ensures a turn of luck later.) Practise safety. Your energy surges back midweek – Wednesday holds a lucky surprise, wise love! Chase money Thursday/Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Start nothing new before Dec. 30, especially in real estate, domestic, childoriented and security arenas. A former opportunity might return in one of these zones now or next week. Your career, duties owed to higher-ups, and your reputation demand attention Sunday/Monday – erratic relationships might threaten your progress or bring a climax. Tuesday begins a month of romance, creative successes and speculative “wins!” Optimism, social delights fill Tuesday/Wednesday: welcome a fine relationship Wednesday. Retreat Thursday/Friday. Your charisma attracts “deep stuff” Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Don’t start new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. You might hear/ read a significant message Sunday. Gentle love and understanding fill Sunday/Monday – but Monday holds a couple of surprises, or stress that could affect your health briefly. This stress/health link has been around for seven years. It will end by March 2011. Gastro-intestinal irritations will ebb. The last year’s quiet cloud over your career will also end by March. A “domestic month” begins Tuesday. Your career/job meets luck Wednesday. Optimism, happiness visit Thursday/Friday! Retreat Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Avoid new starts before Dec. 30. Mysteries arise Sunday/Monday – good mysteries Sunday, leading to rewarding research, or sharing of intimacies, secrets. But take care Monday: don’t invest, borrow, or risk a romantic situation by being too “investigative.” Tuesday begins a month of details, errands, communications, paperwork and travel – be alert in all these, as mistakes are rife until late December. Wisdom, gentle love flow midweek, but are only lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Ambition, Thursday/Friday. Happiness, optimism, social joys arrive Saturday! A new life looms! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your energy remains high, but shy away from big new starts before Dec. 30. You’ll be indecisive until then. A voice from the past might speak Sunday/Monday, or you can be reminded of old relationships, perhaps of old ambitions this week and next. Tuesday begins a month of money, possessions, memory and sensuality. Midweek brings mysteries, subconscious urgings, changes, investments, large finances and intimate bonds. These are lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Wisdom, understanding, gentle love and international themes bless you Thursday/Friday. Your prestige rises Saturday.
Dec. 19 - Dec. 25 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing before Dec. 30. Nostalgia about a more secure time fills this week and next – or you face unfinished obligations, probably involving the government, institutions or disadvantaged people. You could find “lost” receipts, documents that will prove valuable in future – save them. Chores and health issues fill Sunday (good) and Monday (difficult). Relationships irk you Tuesday, but flow with pleasant, happy luck Wednesday. Your energy and charisma surge upward now through January! Life’s depths “surface” Thursday/Friday: research, don’t commit. Gentle love Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Avoid big new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. A former “light lover” or happy friend might return now to late month. Sunday/Monday are romantic, creative and pleasurefilled, but right after this you begin a month of quietude, moderate withdrawal, lowered energy and charisma. (Even Monday, though romantic, hits the turbulence of a “phase end.”) Tackle chores Tuesday (cautiously) and Wednesday (success, even money luck). Relationships confront you Thursday/Friday: all’s well, even a bit romantic. Pursue a mystery Saturday – a “gift” has good future implications. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Don’t start anything new before Dec. 30. A month of pressures and hard work ends Tuesday; four weeks of social delights, optimism, flirtations and happiness begin! But an incomplete career project overhangs this week and next – as long as it’s nothing new, try to finish it up now. Or, a former career role or employment opportunity might return, especially Thursday/Friday: sure, take it. Earlier, rest up, be domestic, Sunday/ Monday. Romance, creativity and pleasure meet barriers Tuesday, success and luck Wednesday. Exciting meetings portend future joys Saturday! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
