Red light rebuff

18 months for ex-bureaucrat

Breaking the ice ...

Former Delta senior staffer Kip Gaudry given ‘significant’ sentence on child porn charge BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Cleo Faus “Kip” Gaudry was sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court Thursday afternoon to 18 months in jail for possession of child pornography. Judge Peder Gulbransen said he had to consider the former Delta bureaucrat’s prior record and the level of depravity of the images found in crafting what he called a “significant” sentence. Crown prosecutor James Lees told the court investigators found more than 10,000 still images and 364 videos on computers taken from Gaudry’s home and office. Gulbransen described more than half of the photos and videos as “particularly disturbing” and involving very young children. Gaudry has a history of sexual offences involving minors. In 1995, he pleaded guilty to nine charges of sexual assault involv-

ing teenaged girls while district administrator for the community of Houston in west-central B.C. The Kip Gaudry assaults took place between 1986 and 1994. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison by a Prince George judge. Gaudry said he started accessing child pornography on the Internet just 18 months after serving his sentence. The former senior Delta bureaucrat was charged with possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography after Delta police raided both his home See GAUDRY page 3

Delta police believe they have a serial arsonist on their hands and are turning to the public for help. There has been a series of vehicle arsons in the Tsawwassen area between Aug. 15 and Dec. 30. “The suspect(s) have targeted unoccupied vehicles overnight, with many of the fires occurring around 4 a.m.,” said Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer. It is believed that more than half a dozen fires in Beach Grove,

Boundary Bay and other areas of Tsawwassen are linked. “Investigators believe that several of these fires are the work of the same suspect or suspects,” Eisenzimmer said. The vehicle damage has ranged from minor to complete destruction. In one case, a second vehicle and an attached garage also caught fire, causing several thousand dollars in damage. Anyone with information about the investigation is urged to call Delta police at 604-946-4411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).

Trees chopped in name of safety Boundary Bay Airport has several felled in an effort to reduce hazards posed to aircraft by wildlife BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Several trees were recently removed from land around Boundary Bay Airport in order to ensure the safety of both birds and planes. The Optimist received several calls last week from people upset the airport had removed the trees, which had seen some eagle activity in the last year. Airport manager Mike Prosser said the airport has a wildlife management plan designed to improve aviation safety by reducing hazards to aircraft caused by wildlife. “One of the ways to reduce that risk is to use passive control techniques through our habitat management programs,” he said. That includes the removal of trees. In this case, the trees were adjacent to the approach for one of the airport’s runways. Over the last year, large birds,

trees needed to come down. She said she observed a pair of eagles leaving the

tree and flying directly over the runway. Day said the pair started to build a nest in one of the trees last year and had recently returned to continue. She added eagles typically will have three different nests in use at the same time and this pair has an active nest in a tree near the off-leash dog area. She said the tree removal would not be detrimental to the birds since they had not nested yet. Eagles typically nest around the end of February. “It would be no different if a big wind came and knocked it down,” she said. Before removing any trees from the property, the airport consults with the provincial Ministry of Environment, the Corporation of Delta and local wildlife agencies, including OWL. The airport must also obtain a permit from Delta before proceeding with any tree removal.

South Delta left out of red light camera expansion BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

South Delta has been left out of a major expansion of ICBC’s red-light camera program. The insurance corporation announced a $20-million expansion this week that will see the total number of intersection cameras rise from 120 to 140. The actual number of cameras will more than quadruple because while there were 120 intersections in the old program, only about 30 cameras were available and were rotated from site to site. The program will see a few spots in North Delta added, including Highway 10 and Scott Road, which has an average of 71 crashes per year, and Nordel Way

at Scott Road, which has an average of 83 crashes per year. Only two South Delta locations were in the old program (Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street and 56th Street at 12th Avenue) and those will no longer be included. Noting data on more than 1,400 intersections across B.C. were analyzed, ICBC spokesperson Adam Grossman said the camera locations were not based on “geographical bias” and also not necessarily the ones with the highest volumes or crash rates. “We were looking at those intersections that were resulting in the highest risk crashes. What intersections we were looking at were those that resulted in serious injuries or fatalities,” he

GAUDRY from page 1 and office at municipal hall in March 2009. Seven computers, two Blackberries, external hard drives and other storage devices were seized from his home. In his office at municipal hall, police also found two laptops, a desktop computer, flash drives, a camera and a cell phone. He pleaded guilty to

the possession charge in November. The Crown stayed the second charge. Gaudry, 59, dressed in blue jeans and a leather jacket, appeared sombre throughout the proceedings and declined to address the court when given the chance. His lawyer told the court while some of the images

explained, adding ICBC has partnered with police in a number of road safety projects in Delta. Nicolas Jimenez, director of road safety for the insurance corporation, said they narrowed the choices to the intersections that have

the most serious types of crashes, usually involving cars hit from the side by red light runners or head-on collisions, over intersections which had mostly crashes as a result of rear-enders due to speed. “We don’t think a camera

is right for every intersection. Just because an intersection has a lot of crashes, it doesn’t mean a camera can solve that problem because it depends on the type of crashes,” said Jimenez. Jimenez said ICBC spent a lot of time looking at Delta because it’s a complex municipality as far as traffic patterns with heavy regional flows. Delta council recently asked ICBC to install a red light camera at the intersection of Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road after considerable discussion by local advisory committees. A report to council noted Highway 17 is a major truck route with an average of 1,300 trucks travelling to Deltaport daily. Mayor Lois Jackson, who

were found on computers in his office at the time of the police raid, those computers were moved between his home and office and he never viewed or downloaded any photos or video while at work. Delta police were tipped off by an international child pornography investigation based in Belgium. Officers were forwarded a Delta IP address, which led them to Gaudry’s home in North

Delta. Lees said the police officer working on the case, who has investigated sexual exploitation of children for more than six years, said it wasn’t the number of images that was striking but the extremely young age of some of the children depicted. Many appear to be between one and eight. Gaudry’s jail term will be followed by three years probation during which he

cannot consume alcohol or drugs, have contact with anyone under 18, or possess a computer or a cell phone with Internet access, among other conditions. Gulbransen said the case was a particularly difficult one to deal with. Citing Gaudry’s intelligence and ability to overcome a “horrific” childhood that included physical and sexual abuse, the judge, however, said he doubted Gaudry

had just come from a police board meeting Wednesday where the intersection crash statistics were discussed, said according to ICBC’s numbers, which are more accurate than police figures, Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road doesn’t even rank in the top 10 as far as crash sites in Delta. Jackson said the police department’s traffic division has been asked to come back with a report examining the issue of truck safety. She noted inspection blitzes continue to find a high number of failures. “I’ve asked the traffic division for recommendations we can take forward to Victoria and elsewhere to make sure the people driving these rigs, particularly independent drivers, are trained properly.” could be rehabilitated. “This second time around, as it were, shows how virulent it is for him.” Gaudry is also facing separate assault charges in another province. In October, he was arrested and transported to Winnipeg where he was charged with indecent assault involving an underage girl stemming from an incident in that city dating back to the summer of 1973.

A local soup kitchen is hoping to tap into thousands of dollars in funding being offered by one of the soft drink industry giants. The Ladner Community Kitchen has an entry in Pepsi’s Refresh project for $25,000 in grant money. The two entries with the most votes get the funding. As of press time the local submission sat in 28th spot. “It’s fluctuating everyday,” community kitchen volunteer May Cordeiro said this week. “I’m hopeful. We’ve got 45 days,” she said, noting voting ends Feb. 28. Cordeiro said she’s trying to spread the word about the group’s efforts and will be getting other volunteers to “rally their own friends and neighbours” to vote. The community kitchen would spend $10,000 on food, $5,000 on kitchen renovation, $5,000 on basic clothing items, $3,000 on a commercial oven and cooking range and $2,000 on kitchen utensils. “A healthy body will promote a healthy mind and this is our mission. The soup kitchen, which marked its first year of operation last month, works in conjunction with the South Delta Food Bank at Ladner Christian Fellowship. If she wins, an extra $15,000 goes to the group. “I think it’s wonderful I’ve made it as far as I have,” she said. She said the money would go towards the society’s current legal action concerning the South Fraser Perimeter Road project. The lawsuit against the federal government alleges Ottawa violated a conservation covenant to protect the bog.

Thrift stores face added costs to haul away unwanted items New mattress disposal fee to further eat into bottom line for local shops BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

As if they didn’t have enough to deal with by having to haul away junk left at their doors, now things will get even more expensive for local thrift stores with a new disposal fee for old mattresses. Staring this year, old mattresses and box springs are subject to a $20 disposal fee at the Vancouver Landfill. That’s an added cost for thrift store operators already spending thousands hauling away junk people leave at their premises, mostly at night. “Some of the things we get are brand new, and some of the things we get are absolutely appropriate for reselling, but some of the things you can’t resell and it’s becoming a big disposal problem for us,” said Nancy Macey, executive director of the Delta Hospice Society. Macey said the Hospice Cottage Thrift Store in Tsawwassen gets about three mattresses every week, on top of having to pay close to $1,000 monthly to dispose of other garbage. Macey said in some instances it’s simply a case of people not meaning any harm and not realizing the thrift store doesn’t accept items such as old electronics, tires, mattresses, carpets, refrigerators or bar-

after recently taking several items. Macey said they don’t want to go so far as to fence off the store at night because it might discourage people from dropping off legitimate items. Delta Hospital Auxiliary president Kitty Sawycky echoed many of the same concerns, noting large items like sofabeds are still being dumped at the auxiliary’s Ladner thrift store despite new reflective signage. “People unfortunately won’t pay the dumping fees and dump at our place. It does certainly cut into our profit significantly,” she said. Sawycky noted that sometimes, fortunately, PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI when some people try Grateful for the many worthwhile items they receive, local thrift to drop off junk, others stores also get much in the way of unwanted donations. nearby remind them they becues. Mechanical failure slows Westshore’s shipments BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A mechanical failure has halted coal from being shipped through one of the berths at Westshore Terminals at Roberts Bank. On Wednesday, Westshore Terminals Investment Corp. announced that a gearbox that controls the boom movements on the ship loader at Berth 1 had failed. A news release by Westshore notes the failure prevents the berth from being used to ship coal but doesn’t impact any other aspect of the terminal operations. The company says it’s anticipated that it will take approximately two weeks to replace the damaged gearbox and complete the related repairs before Berth 1 resumes regular operations. “This downtime will result in reduced coal handling capacity at Westshore during this period to throughput levels that can be handled through Berth 2. Westshores has advised its customers and

will work with them to minimize disruptions to its customers’ shipments to the extent possible,” said the company. Westshore Terminals, which celebrated its 40th year in business in 2010, is Canada’s top coal export facility, surpassing the combined coal shipments of all other terminals in Canada. Westshore says for the past decade it has also been the busiest single export coal terminal in all of North America, routinely shipping about 21 million tonnes of coal each year. According to Port Metro Vancouver cargo statistics, comparing volumes between November 2009 and November 2010, the volume of metallurgical coal handled increased 23.3 per cent, while other coal increased 32.2 per cent. Westshore Terminals is now controlled by the Jim Pattison Group and continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility ships steelmaking (metallurgical) and energy (thermal) coal to 20 countries worldwide.

Recruit doesn’t wait to jump into action Police dep’t recent hire doesn’t let lack of training prevent him from assisting crash victim BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A newly recruited Delta police officer took action after coming across a car crash in Ladner. “The Delta police department often hires new recruits in advance of the available recruit training courses at the Justice Institute of B.C. and places them within the organization in non-operational roles until their training commences,” said department spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer.

The department recently hired 38-year-old Ben Whitehead, who was sworn in as a police officer in mid-October and assigned to work in the forensic identification services section until his recruit class begins in March. Last week, however, Whitehead was thrown into some more hands-on police work. On Jan. 6, at about 3:30 p.m., Const. Whitehead was returning to Ladner from North Delta when he came across a collision in the 7800-block of Ladner Trunk

Road. A middle-aged IndoCanadian woman had lost control of her car; she struck a telephone pole and the car landed on its side in a water-filled ditch. “Passersby had stopped but no one was assisting the lady who appeared in a state of shock,” Eisenzimmer said. After confirming someone had called 911, Whitehead jumped in to help. He checked on the woman’s condition and soon learned that English

was not her first language. He then recruited assistance from someone who spoke Punjabi to help determine the extent of the woman’s injuries. The officer removed his own coat to help keep her warm and supported her head and arm until paramedics and firefighters arrived and were able to stabilize the woman and get her out of the car. The woman was taken to hospital where her injuries were not as severe as initially thought. “Most people arriving

at a scene like this want to help but often don’t know what to do,” Eisenzimmer said. “It isn’t expected that a police recruit with no training would take command of a situation like this but Const. Whitehead isn’t without command experience.” Whitehead served more than 16 years in the British Military, earning the rank of major. He is a qualified helicopter pilot and served time in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also spent a year posted in Canada at Canadian Forces

Ben Whitehead Hands-on effort Base Suffield in Alberta. “That posting drew him and his wife and their two boys back to Canada,” Eisenzimmer said.

complaints against police. Last spring, the province introduced several changes to B.C.’s Police Act, including modifications to the police complaints process and a commitment to establish a special investigative unit to deal with in-custody deaths. In light of several highprofile investigations of police conduct, and wavering public trust in the process, the Delta police board suggested expanding that unit to encompass all public complaints against police. After hearing of Delta’s motion, both the Vancouver and Nelson police boards

passed similar motions. “You started the ball rolling,” chief Jim Cessford told the board at a meeting this week. “You created some momentum ... People are hearing what you have to say.” The idea was also passed onto the B.C. Association of Police Boards, which has fanned it out to its membership for consideration. Mayor Lois Jackson, who also chairs the police board, said she would like to take the idea to the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference later this year. Cessford supports police investigating police. He

said officers have the skills needed to carry out complex investigations. In an interview last year with the Optimist, Cessford said he spent a year of his career with the Edmonton police department’s internal investigation unit. “We take our job really seriously,” he said. “We knew they had to be done properly.” However, the chief said he recognizes the issue has become a sensitive one for the public and supports the creation of a specialized unit. Cessford was recently at the centre of a high-pro-

file case when the Delta department was brought in to investigate the actions of two Vancouver police officers after a man was left with a black eye and other injuries during his arrest in a case of mistaken identity. After months of investigation, Cessford found the officers were acting in the course of their duties and in good faith. His decision received public criticism and a few weeks later Stan Lowe, B.C.’s police complaints commissioner, ordered a public hearing into the matter. A date for the hearing has not yet been set.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Vicki Huntington could have a real decision on her hands depending on how the Liberal leadership race shakes out. It’s no surprise the two leadership candidates that paid a visit to South Delta earlier this week both broached the idea of the independent MLA joining the fold. George Abbott didn’t pull any punches in his courting of Huntington while Christy Clark was a little more reserved in her pursuit of Delta South’s representative. With every seat crucial in what promises to be a close provincial election, and with Delta South having been a party stronghold for almost two decades, it would be a logical one for the new leader to target. It would also be a feather in the cap of Premier Gordon Campbell’s replacement if he or she is able to convince the independent to come on board, providing a tangible signal that the culture in Victoria has indeed changed. But it’s not just Liberal fortunes that are at stake here. Should someone like Clark or Abbott, who have both been preaching a grassroots approach to governing, win, it puts Huntington in a bit of a pickle. Last time around the former civic councillor campaigned on a platform of listening to, and acting on, constituent concerns, a message the Liberals ultimately couldn’t overcome given their track record in these parts. In the next election, however, an Abbott- or Clarkled government could make a similar pitch, creating difficulties for Huntington to differentiate herself. It would not be a stretch to see oncedisaffected Liberals leave the independent and return to their roots if they feel the party has righted itself. What’s more, Huntington benefited from strategic voting New Democrats in 2009, supporters that could also disappear if they believe their party has a legitimate shot to form government and an outside chance at winning Delta South in a tight, three-way race. The flip side to that precarious scenario is a two-way race with the popular incumbent representing the right-of-centre party that has long been the choice of local voters against a left-leaning bunch that has never had much traction here. It would be almost certain victory, save for a campaign blunder or upstart party. It would mean a second term, a pension and possibly even a cabinet post. The good news is Huntington doesn’t have to decide tomorrow, but should the Liberal leadership race unfold in such a way, our well-respected independent will definitely have one weighty decision in her future.

Falcon’s merit pay idea for teachers gets failing grade NATHALIE HEIBERGHARRISON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon wants to introduce merit pay for teachers in B.C. This is ridiculous for three reasons. Firstly, it’s expensive. The province has reduced special needs support, cut one-quarter of school librarians and left school districts to make huge budget cuts. If it can’t find the dough for these basic needs, how is it going to find it to pay the “best” teachers more money? Will the so-called bad teachers have to take a pay cut or is the province actually prepared to infuse more money into the cash-strapped system? Secondly, it hasn’t been proven to work. In Australia and parts of the U.S. where it’s been put in place, they’ve had a hard time linking merit pay with student success. Vanderbilt University in Tennessee

even did a study and found the new pay system couldn’t be linked to boosting student achievement at all. How could you compare a teacher in the suburbs to a teacher in the mountains to a teacher in the city? Or a teacher of math, English and sewing? Falcon said his “Master Teacher Incentive Program” would be similar to the one in Australia and would include peer evaluation, parental input, test results and extra-curricular activities. But what kind of magic formula would he find that mixes all of these aspects to rank teachers, and to do it fairly? BCTF president Susan Lambert has openly opposed the idea, saying it puts too much of an emphasis on test scores, and president of the Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association Jason Karpuk said it would be “detrimental to the collaborative nature of the teaching profession,” that teachers don’t do their work alone and therefore can’t be evaluated on their own. Lastly, a teacher’s job isn’t just to improve students’ test scores, and in fact, a “good teacher” is a completely subjective label. One of the best teachers I ever had used to make grand entrances

into the classroom by turning down the lights and playing Chariots of Fire. Another would interrupt lessons once a month to talk about the world of professional hide and seek and another ended up in jail after I graduated. Some of the greatest teachers I’ve ever had left a lasting impression on me not because of how well they covered the curriculum, or how well I did on the final exam, but because of everything outside of that: the help before and after class, the advice and encouragement, the practical jokes. Falcon said a merit pay system should be introduced because “every parent and student knows who the exceptional, innovative educators are,” but he’s not taking into account the fact a lot of people vary on that opinion. The Liberals choose their new leader on Feb. 26 and until then, candidates will be proposing ideas, some tame and some controversial, to try and woo voters. Falcon is right the school system needs some changes, but simply introducing a new pay system won’t fix it. Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world, and students deserve a more innovative approach from government.

Building didn’t have to fall

5. The sketch shown in the Optimist reveals this person knows nothing about heritage buildings, ignores sightlines and at 11,600 square feet is just plain silly. Ladner does not need pubs and restaurants more than it needs one- or two-storey buildings where the cultures that worked in the canneries could display their heritage. Peter Ladner and his family might want to participate. 6. When is comes to heritage buildings, Nelson has 350. Thousands and thousands of tourists arrive annually. I have purchased the book, Nelson: A Proposal for Urban Heritage Conservation, so the CAO, council and staff can learn all about materials, design, patterns, cornices, signs, windows, porches and so on. At the rate Arthur Drive is going with cookie cutter products, it will soon resemble No. 1 Road in Richmond. Claire Hurley

CAO. 1. All requests for proposals should be published in print. Folks don’t regularly read the website. 2. The best three bids should be openly discussed in front of the cameras at council meetings so taxpayers can see what’s happening. No more of the invisible, unknown “consultants” nonsense hired at a secret price. 3. Before a bid is accepted, a bank statement certifying the firm has sufficient funds to complete the project should be required. Millennium Water in Vancouver is bankrupt, so is that large housing project in West Van. 4. Realtors need to get real. To whine about a lack of parking is to ignore the fact that 8,000 to 10,000 persons attend Ladner Village Market. Perhaps Kaymaran Tours could be invited to return. That owner wisely uses tour buses.

Editor: Re: Welcome to Ladner’s waterfront, Jan. 5 Splat! That’s the sound of the heritage Brackman Ker building in Ladner falling into the river. One wonders how this happened to a municipally-owned building? Did Delta council have the normal building inspection completed? Were these costs deducted from the purchase price? Why weren’t reparations begun quickly? Taxpayers are being told the cost for repairs was $1.6 million and there were “safety issues.” The B.C. construction industry is first rate. Welltrained persons clean those way-up high sails at the older convention centre. Others replace the rotten pilings in the water. We’ve all seen B.C. Hydro workers scaling heights. Talent abounds. ‘Merit pay’ idea won’t work in classroom

Editor: Re: Saip backs Falcon, teacher idea, Jan. 8 As a lifelong teacher, mother and grandmother, I was very disappointed with Dale Saip’s support for Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon’s “merit pay” idea. How do you tell who’s best? In basketball, the most baskets scored wins; in hockey, the most goals; in track, the first across the finish line. Teaching isn’t like that. There aren’t rows of identical children ready like basketballs to score so you can earn extra money. Each child is an individual with a variety of skills, needs, problems, attitudes, family

support, etc. If “merit pay” is implemented, a person wouldn’t want certain children in their class in case those kids brought down their scores on government tests. Someone else could have behaviour problems, children with special needs, poor English or math skills, or other problems. Teaching could become competitive rather than cooperative. The system would be very divisive. However, I think most teachers would continue to do what they are presently doing. Every job has a few duds (perhaps even politics), but on the whole most teachers share ideas and resources,

give or take workshops to improve skills, mentor younger teachers, buy classroom resources from their own pockets and spend large amounts of time helping kids succeed and helping parents support their kids. If the rest of the teachers in Delta are as great as the staff at Cliff Drive, where my two grandchildren go, we should be celebrating the everyday, hard-working teachers in the district, not just looking for the glitzy ideas. If there is extra money for “rewarding merit,” it could well go to give schools more supplies and resources. Mary Begin

Books, books and more books are what Alan Hunt, co-ordinator of the annual KinVillage Book Sale, is after. “We rely on the generosity of the community to donate their used books to such a good cause,” said Hunt. “The proceeds are slotted to go to the KinVillage Care Home to add to the comfort of the 101 residents there.” Hunt said he is always amazed at the generosity of

the community and added donors can drop off their books to KinVillage. “We are happy to accept children’s books, fiction, non-fiction, CDs, DVDs and board games, though we don’t accept encyclopaedia, National Geographic, digests or computer books as these date so quickly. We hope to have about 15,000 books that we can offer for sale.” Sorting 15,000 books into categories is a daunt-

ing task but Hunt relies on his wife Margaret and the “approximately 20 dedicated volunteers who work hard to accomplish this task. “We have been very fortunate to also get help from TOOBs, a local service club that has assisted with the set up and take down. The community is always behind us and we look forward to this event,” said Hunt. The KinVillage Book

The earth has been warming and cooling fairly regularly for billions of years. Sadly, because we don’t control the forces of nature, such events will continue. We do, however, have the ability to stop senseless killing. We have to acknowledge that not all people think the same way we do; we may not like their politics, culture, religion, or lifestyle, but we are all members of one family — the human race — and we share the same home — planet earth. It is the greatest gift God gave us. We cannot change its inner workings, but we can change how we live upon it. Let us work together for peace and justice in the world and strive towards peaceable solutions with words, not weapons.

Over the past week or so our world seems to have been rocked by some significant, and terrifying, events. Parts of Australia have experienced flooding of such magnitude that, when a wall of water poured down from mountains across fields and cities sweeping away everything in its path, it was described as “an inland tsunami.” In Tucson, the senseless shooting of a politician and the resulting deaths of six innocent people have left Arizona, indeed the entire United States, in shock. How do we deal with these disasters? How do we make sense of them? Some obviously we have no control over, earthquakes and storms are beyond our capabilities to change.

rts and culture are the soul of the community and dancing is a great place to embrace the cultural experience,” says Dave McIlroy, president of the Tsawwassen Business Association, which launched an arts and culture initiative last year. There are many opportunities to participate in the dance experience in Delta, including regular dances at KinVillage Community Centre and the Tsawwassen Legion, which offers a more intimate “nightclub atmosphere.” “We are fortunate to have live musicians at many of these events, from small bands to full orchestras,” says McIlroy, adding the “KinVillage Community Centre has the nicest dance floor in the Northwest.” A big Dance Extravaganza is planned for March 26 at KinVillage Community Centre, which will provide an opportunity for Lower Mainland ballroom dance studios and dance instructors to showcase their dancers. With the increasing interest in ballroom dancing through television programs such as Dancing with the Stars and movies like Shall We Dance?, more people are interested in learning to dance or improving their dancing, says Toni Triplett, of the Triplett School of Ballroom Dancing, who instructs American social

dancing in Tsawwassen. “It is important to understand that there are differences between American social dancing and international ballroom dancing. American social is a more relaxed form of dancing and can be adapted to dancing on a smaller floor such as in a nightclub. I teach my students to listen to the music and as they become more confident in their steps, to adapt and even interchange the steps from one dance to another to add excitement to their dancing experience,” she says. Triplett has been teaching at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen for four years. “It is a great learning environment and students can attend the regular Friday evening or Sunday afternoon dances to practice what they have learned,” she says. There is also the opportunity to experience some of the glamour associated with dancing at events like the New Year’s Eve Gala, she says. Triplett also operates a wheelchair dance program at the centre. Learning to dance does take time and patience, says Triplett. “It is not an instant process and students have to understand that the body is like an instrument and needs to be trained. There is a lot to think about, the closeness of one’s partner, placement of the feet and the close connection between movement and

music.” Andy Wong instructs international ballroom dancing at the Grand Ballroom in Richmond. “It is ballroom dancing that is universal in all countries. It has form and structure and precise footwork, however it is not as complicated as people think,” says Wong. “There has been a change in thinking about ballroom dancing over the last 20 years. It used to be an old people’s activity but now it has become glamorous and people of all ages take lessons. There are no boundaries. There is something for everyone from children to seniors.” People learn to dance for a variety of reasons. “About 99 per cent learn to dance for recreation, fun and exercise while very few take lessons to go on at a competition level, which does require a high level of technique,” says Wong. “Some people have a natural ability but everyone has some sense of rhythm and can learn to tap into that,” says Triplett. “There will always be different levels of ability and interest but everyone can enjoy the social aspect of dancing, the enjoyment of an activity couples can do together and the achievement of perfecting a new skill.” Classes are starting again and planning for the Dance Extravaganza is underway, says Triplett. For more details call Toni Triplett at 604-862-8761 or visit www. triplettdance.com.

Luifer bringing salsa workshop to Los Gitanos

Tsawwassen will get the heat turned up next Saturday when Luis (Luifer) Gutierrez begins his salsa workshop at Los Gitanos School of Spanish Dance. The Venezuelan-born Gutierrez, who has over 20 years of experience teaching salsa and other Latin dances, will be in town for a class that’s open to part-

ners or singles willing to move their hips for a couple of hours. “Dancing is such an uplifting experience, it relaxes and refocuses your body,” said Bev Mantovani, owner and flamenco teacher at Los Gitanos. “I am so excited to bring an instructor of Luis’ calibre to our community to share his

knowledge and passion for salsa; it will make a fantastic Saturday afternoon.” Gutierrez began to share his passion for salsa in 1995 by teaching his own personal style, which he calls “romantic salsa,” in the Vancouver area. Gutierrez, who performs on a regular basis at various restaurants, clubs and

theatres, has developed his personal style of the dance by travelling and dancing around the world. “As a salsa instructor Luifer always provides his students with a memorable and unique experience,” added Mantovani. No previous experience is needed. The workshop is two

hours and begins at 2 p.m. If there is enough demand, a second class will start at 4 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Classes will be at the Los Gitanos studio at 40B1835-56th St., Tsawwassen. To reserve a spot contact 604-948-8081, e-mail info@losgitanos.ca or visit www.losgitanos.ca.

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman Rarely do I finish reading a book and immediately turn to the beginning again. I did with Tom Rachman’s novel The Imperfectionists, trying to figure out just what makes this book such a great read. We meet the “imperfectionists” one at a time: they are all connected in some way to an international English-language newspaper published in Rome. Each chapter focuses on one of the characters, followed by a short entry explaining the history of the newspaper since its inception in 1953 by mysterious American publisher and industrialist Cyrus Ott. There is the ambitious editor-in-chief, Kathleen Solson, described as “deliberate and pulverizing,” who dismisses an ex-lover as “vanished from mind. She can’t help it; she’s of the newspapering temperament, and he’s no longer front page.” A hardball player in a tough industry, Kathleen faces conflicts between job and personal life. A young fellow named Winston Cheung has a cameo appearance early in the book, and shows up a few chapters later in Cairo competing for a job as a

freelancer. Trouble is, he is a dreadful news writer. A more senior writer gently advises him: “first off, a standard rule for a news article — and I don’t mean to mow down your creativity here — is to identify the location and the day at some point. Also, you should cite the names of anyone you talk to. And you might want to avoid using the word ‘thing’ so much.” She also gently suggests that you can’t make stuff up

Eventually, the paper closes down, and characters move off the page and out of the story. for effect, or take too many words to tell a story. Obituary writers, copy editors, news reporters, accountants, readers — and their various friends, lovers and enemies — weave in and out of the story. As a journalist, Rachman has a great eye for detail, and follows the “show, don’t tell” rule of writing. We know who likes wine, and how much; we follow people through the busy streets of Rome into the newspaper office; we sense what it means when a man brushes the back of his ex-lover’s hand. Ott’s descendents do

not have the interest or the skills to run a successful newspaper, and it falls into a slow decline. The last publisher, Oliver Ott, avoids the office altogether, living in the family’s crumbling Rome mansion with his basset hound, Schopenhauer. Talking to his dog: “‘I mean, we all know that I don’t understand this sort of thing. The rest of the family does. But I seem to be missing it somehow. Missing the chromosome for it. The cleverness gene. I’m faulty. So here’s my question, Schop: can I be blamed for my defects? I mean, are my faults my fault?’ The dog glances up at him. ‘Don’t give me that condescending look,’ Oliver says. ‘What have you ever done with your life that’s so spectacular?’” As the business declines, so does the office atmosphere, where the remaining staff use sarcasm and outright hostility to express their uncertain status: “the senior editors call Kathleen on her mobile to discuss page one. They put her on speakerphone so everyone can go on record endorsing her, then hang up and mock her, as if to cleanse the air of their sycophancy.” Eventually, the paper closes down, and characters move off the page and out of the story. But I remain curious about them all. A sequel would be great — or perhaps Rachman knows a good reporter always leaves the reader wanting more.

Jungle wows of Palau BY

W

JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

hen I was seven, a harmless garter snake crossed my path and put me into panic mode. Now, half a century later, I still get the heebie-jeebies whenever I think of one. So after hearing that a one-eyed eel (close enough to a snake) may be lurking about in the nearby riverbed, I freeze in my tracks. My husband and I are visiting Palau, an archipelago of 500-or-so lush islands that sprawl over the North Pacific. As well as checking out the amazing treasures that thrive beneath the waves, we explore a few above the pristine surface — the Ngardmau Waterfall being one of them. As legend has it, the curtain of water that plummets 30 metres (100 feet) was created by this slimy-like creature. After falling into an endless sleep, he magically transformed into the river and his head became the waterfall. We’d been prepped in what to bring on this hour-long trek that bisects Babeldaob’s jungle: bug repellent, comfy shoes, bathing suit. How tricky could it be? The walking sticks our Palauan guide doles out should have been my

first clue. Thank heavens for this trusty crutch. Like a third leg, it guides me down 375 stairs that cleave through the tangled flora. It serves as my staff while navigating streams, protruding roots and mucky mud holes. It also acts as my supporter when taking a breather — which happens regularly. But it’s not my rapid respirations that stop me in my tracks, it’s the sheer beauty. Towering mahoganies, leafy papayas and feathery palms mesh with 1,200 plant species in this undisturbed Micronesian rainforest. The flourishing array canopies my route and cloaks the forever rolling terrain. In the distance is our eventual destination point, Palau’s largest waterfall. While accompanied en route by a cacophony of bird song, we cross tracks that take us to both the past and future. Railway ties, now choked by overgrowing flora, were used by the Japanese during the Second World War when they mined the area for aluminum. Paralleling these rusty relics is a new gleaming monorail that will soon whisk non-hikers from the trailhead to the falls. And by 2012 a zip line will provide adventure seekers with a thrilling way down. I’d definitely earn the title, Jane of the

Jungle, while zinging from treetop to treetop. But today, there are there no other options. As we continue descending into the jungle thickets, I pray my legs don’t fail me now. After reaching a sign that says, “Waterfall this way,” I realize my arms (and bathing suit) are going to get in on the action too. Waiting before us is a thighdeep riverbed and strung up to the adjacent shoreline is a flimsy guide wire. “It’s a snap,” Jayvan says with a smirk. “Just hang onto the twine and go hand over hand.” His laissez-faire instructions to this tightrope act are stifled by the thunderous roar of the nearby falls and though I’d rather be dipping into the infinity pool at our five-star Palau Pacific Resort, I plunge in and clutch onto this Tarzan-like lifeline. Within minutes we’re safely across and beneath the fabulous falls. The raging froth funnels through a narrow gorge and from its steep precipice plummets to where we stand in the white-water pool. Mesmerized by its magnificence, we silently watch this spectacle of nature unblemished, untarnished, unspoiled and thankfully uninhabited by any one-eyed eels. Sweating it out with Bikram yoga p.j. wren

Well on Your Way “Fold your body like a Japanese ham sandwich,” my instructor tells me. What the heck does a Japanese ham sandwich look like? I ask myself. I mean, I had a ham sandwich when I was in Vegas, and even a few in Cuba, but I’m not quite sure how bending forward, with my face to my shins and my fingers tucked under my

feet has anything to do with a ham sandwich — let alone one from Japan. But I better do what she tells me since this is what I signed up for. The “what” I signed up for is Bikram yoga, at the yoga studio that opened up last October in Tsawwassen. The Bikram method of yoga is a series of 26 postures, and two breathing exercises, all practiced in a 40 degree Celsius room. If you have never exercised in 40 degrees before (105 Fahrenheit for you old schoolers), then imagine doing 90 minutes of jumping jacks... in a sauna. You

get my drift. It’s hot. Very hot. That was one of the reasons that brought me to the class in the first place. I figured this would be the perfect program for a girl whose hands are always as cold as ice and who has been known to wear socks to bed while vacationing in tropical places. So 40 degrees, I thought, would be a walk in the park. Wow, what a walk! I spent the entire first class wondering, “When can I leave?” I had never sweated so much in my life. It was dripping in my eyes (which stings, by the way,

Delta Committee Appointments

Volunteers Needed Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Council invite your participation to make Delta a better place!

To be most effective, local government needs the input of its citizens. There are many opportunities to participate in your local government through Council appointments to serve on various committees created to address specific areas of civic concern. There are presently several vacancies, and interested persons are encouraged to consider seeking appointment to serve in one of the following areas: • Advisory Design Panel (2 vacancies) provides advice to Council on matters related to the design and construction of building and other development within the Municipality, as referred by Council. Professional credentials are required (AIBC or BCSLA). (Meets monthly on the fourth Thursday at 6:30 p.m.) • Agricultural Advisory Committee (2 vacancies) provides advice to Council on all matters relating to agriculture in Delta. Seeking applicants from Delta’s farming community. (Meets at the call of the Chair.)

help with this detoxification as well as to assist the participant in a deeper stretch. If you are new to yoga, I suggest you stop by and chat with the yoga studio’s owner, Jodi, first. She can help you determine whether this type of yoga is for you. We are blessed to have many yoga programs in our area, so if Bikram is not for you, there is definitely another type just around the corner. The key is to find the class that speaks your language, embrace it and go for it. If you do decide to go, let me give you a few tips: First off, wear as little as possible. Don’t worry about people looking at you, or judging your flabby thighs, or your love handles. Trust me, everyone is so blinded by the sweat pouring in their eyes no one’s even going to notice. Second, bring water. Pretty obvious as to why. Third, bring two towels: one large one to place over your mat and a smaller one to wipe your brow. Fourth, have some elec-

trolytes after the class. The studio sells Emergen-C vitamin mix, but a sprinkle of unrefined sea salt in your water will also do the trick in replenishing the minerals you just lost, or try one of my fave electrolyte replacements Vega-Sport, which can be purchased at Thrifty Foods, or Rev, which is sold by Usana. And finally, leave your ego at the door. While I haven’t been practicing for that long, Bikram has already taught me that I have a lot to learn from my body and a lot to teach it as well. For more information, visit www.bikramyogasouthdelta.com.

• Join my Couple’s Weight Loss Challenge. Weigh-ins happen this Sunday, Jan. 16. E-mail info@fitnesswithpj.com for more information. P.J. Wren is a personal trainer and writer in the Delta area who loves to sweat when she works out. She can be reached at fitnesswithpj.com.

if you wear contacts) and dripping down my arms and my legs, leaving me to wonder if I would have any fluids left in my body by the end of the class. Thankfully, by the third class, I only found myself wondering a few times about when I could leave. A step in the right direction, I thought. Bikram, who is an actual yoga guru who goes by the name of Yogiraj Bikram Choudhury, brought his style of yoga to North America in the early 1970s. Since then it has been gathering steam and has really exploded onto the fitness scene here in Canada these past five years. A Bikram class consists of a warm up with a breathing exercise and then 26 different postures, performed in sets of two. The postures are taught in a specific way to work every part of the body and to move fresh, oxygenated blood throughout the body’s organs and tissues — all while sweating out those nasty toxins. Hawks get physical to defeat Sockeyes BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Ice Hawks looked like a different team in producing their biggest win of the season on Thursday at Minoru Arena. Instead of relying on their highoctane offence that has them near the top of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League standings, the Hawks put on their work boots and hard hats to grind out a 3-1 victory over the Richmond Sockeyes. The win moved Delta one point ahead of the Sockeyes for first place in the Tom Shaw Conference standings with their cross-river rivals still enjoying a game in hand. The impressive performance was led by the intimidating trio of John Proctor, Mitch Pacey and Anthony Brito who each measure 6-foot-4. Not only did they punish the Sockeyes with relentless bodychecking, they produced two of Delta’s three goals, including Proctor’s game winner in the early stages of the third period. Pacey had opened the scoring back in the the opening period. Pacey rejoined the Ice Hawks after being released by the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express on Monday, while Brito is now back at full speed after recovering from an injury. “They bring an element we

needed with their size, especially against this team,” said Ice Hawks head coach Dave McLellan. “We thought with the depleted line-up last month it was a tough battle for us against them. Their forwards are big and strong and cycle well. We did a good job dealing with it tonight.” Since his arrival, McLellan has always insisted the Ice Hawks had to be better in their own end of the rink despite their lofty record and being the league’s highest scoring team. He watched his squad collapse in the third period during its previous visit to Minoru and hopes his players now understand what it takes to be successful against an outstanding team like Richmond. “I thought we played a really structured game tonight,” he said. “We wanted to get on their defencemen and finish bodychecks as much as possible and we did a good job of that. “We have our core group now, after a couple of key acquisitions at the deadline, and hopefully this is the right group to go forward for the rest of the year.” Beside the return of Pacey, the team acquired Konrad Sander who was the leading scorer for the last place Squamish Wolf Pack. The 20-year-old is a solid two-way player who played for McLellan when he was coaching in the BCHL with Burnaby. Spencer Traher added an insur-

The victory vaulted the Ice Hawks to top spot in the Tom Shaw Conference. ance goal when he converted a rebounded after a shot from Liam Harding. Nick Enegren got the win in net, making his third consecutive start.

“We want to get a feeling who is going to take the ball here,” added McLellan of his goaltending situation. “We have been going with (Doug Birks) and now it’s Nick for

a bit. We want them both ready for the playoffs.” The Ice Hawks return to action Tuesday when Ridge Meadows visit Ladner at 7:30 p.m.

Delta Gymnastics on the move in more ways than one The event will see teams put through various physical and fun challenges that will make use of the club’s equipment at the South Delta recreation centre. Confirmed entires include Delta Police, Delta School District, Delta Fire Department, the Corporation of Delta as well as teams headed by Leslie Abramson and campaign chair Doug Husband. Money will be raised through pledge forms given to the participants. The Showdown Challenge will also coincide with Gymnastics Awareness Week across Canada. Other fundraising activities include a foam block campaign where individuals can purchase blocks through the club to help fill

the two large pits in the new gym. Thrifty’s Foods has also got onboard and blocks will be on sale at the Tsawwassen store beginning in mid-March. A barefoot ball is planned for April that will be held in the new centre. The club is also preparing its competitive athletes for a busy stretch that begins with Devy Dyson and Julian Geisler heading to Halifax next month to represent B.C. at the Canada Winter Games. It has also not shied away from hosting competitions. It will provide equipment and help Delta secondary run the provincial high school championships and, just a few days later, host the Spring Fever Meet at the South

Delta recreation centre — March 19-20. That event will conclude just hours before the scheduled move to Ladner where regular programs are slated to resume April 4. The club is also set to make an impact at local elementary schools with its KidsCanMove program for students in Grades 1-2. The four 30-minute sessions will see the basics of gymnastics and movement introduced in a fun way, utilizing games and individual challenges. The program was made possible through a grant received from the Telus Community Board. It covers the coaching costs to have certified gymnastics instructors visit schools throughout the district.

The Delta Gymnastics Society will be moving on the fly when it makes its new home at the Delta Sport Development Centre. With the move to Ladner now just two months away, the club is hardly thinking about packing up boxes and equipment. Instead, the focus is on a number of big events in the coming weeks. There is an aggressive fundraising drive currently underway to ensure the new facility will be properly equipped. The Kids First Campaign. that needs to raise an estimated $850,000, will receive a boost with the inaugural Sport Showdown Challenge on Jan. 23.

Ladner’s Brodie Reid was recognized for his outstanding play at Northeastern University by being selected Hockey East Rookie of the Week. The South Delta Minor Hockey product earned the award after a two-goal, +2 performance in the Boston school’s first four-point weekend of the year. Reid netted the Huskies second 5-on-3 goal this season at Massachusetts and provided the opening tally at home against Brodie UMass Lowell on Jan. 8. His power play goal was the catalyst in triggering a three-goal flurry in 38 seconds as teammates Wade MacLeod and Steve Quailer followed suit.

The 6-foot-1 freshman is currently third in scoring for Northeastern and leads the freshman class with 11 points, including four goals and seven assists through 17 games played. He has accrued a +1 rating and converted on 4-of-37 shot attempts (10.8 percent) in his first season as a Husky. Reid played four seasons in the B.C. Hockey League with the Surrey Eagles, Burnaby Express and Penticton Vees before spendReid ing a year with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. He produced 76 goals and 63 assists in 157 career BCHL games, including 52 goals with the Express during the 2007-08 season.

Jarry leads Canadians to pair of wins The Greater Vancouver Canadians rode the solid play of Team B.C. goaltender Tristan Jarry to a key weekend sweep of the Cariboo Cougars in B.C. Major Midget Hockey League action. The North Delta native, who will be participating in next month’s Canada Winter Games in Halifax, led the Canadians to a 2-1 victory on Saturday and a 4-1 triumph 24 hours later at the UBC Winter Sports Centre. Jarry lowered his goals against average to 1.96 and now has a season record of 10-3-2. He was selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. Carter Popoff notched the game winner in the series opener. Malcolm Glaholt had the other goal. The Canadians also relied on a

balanced attack in game two with goals from Garrett Forster, Demico Hannoun, Anthony Ast and Matthew Ho. Kyle Hoekstra and Popoff each had two assists. The wins improved the Canadians record to 18-6-4 and opened up a five-point lead on the Cougars for third place in the league standings. Greater Vancouver is three points back of the front-running Valley West Hawks. Icing … Jarry is among five Canadians who participated in last night’s league all-star game. He was joined by Nicolas Petan (forward), Anthony Ast (forward) and South Delta Minor products Macoy Erkamps (defenceman) and Jeremy Gossard (forward).

BELLINGHAM, Daniel William 'Dan The Man'

it is with sadness that we announce the all too soon passing of our beloved brother and amazing friend, Dan. He is predeceased by his parents George and Madeleine. Danny is survived by his brother Kenny (Pam); sisters Linda, Melissa, and Celina as well as nieces, nephews and a whole lot of close friends. Danny had a colorful sense of humor with a genuine spirit. He was a skilled tradesman and cook who loved to fish and always had an open door for those he loved. Dan the Man was larger than life and due to his unique people skills he will be missed and forever remembered by all who knew him. It is only fitting that a Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday January 22, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Fisherman’s Co-op Hall, 4461 Savoy Street in Ladner, where many of the family’s celebrations and memory’s have been created. Furthermore, a final farewell will be held later that evening. We love you Danny! 'I YAM WHAT I YAM' Personal Alternative Funeral Services 604-946-7759

Card of Thanks

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all our friends and family who were so kind and thoughtful to us during Lola’s long battle with her cancer. The flowers, cards, telephone calls and donations. Expressing condolences were also greatly appreciated. We will all miss her, and she will always be in our hearts. Thank you all so much, Dom Taddei, Dot Capstick (Marsh), and family.

Obituaries

EVANS-ATKINSON Evan Dec. 13, 1924 – Jan. 3, 2011 Evan was born on his grandfathers cattle ranch in Grenfell, Sask., the only child of Capt. Norman and Marguerite (nee: Brown) Evans-Atkinson. Evan loved, with his whole heart, his family, his country, off-shore sailing and his career as an Editor at the Vancouver Sun. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Mary, his adored children and grandchildren; Wanda Marsden (Bob) of Nanaimo, Bruce Evans-Atkinson (Jackie) and his two grand-daughters Tara and Emma of Vancouver, his step-son John Bishop (Amber) of Kelowna and his step-granddaughter Brittany Bishop of Burnaby. He was predeceased by his parents and the mother of his children Joan 'Tony' Evans-Atkinson of Nanaimo. Evan was reared in Vancouver, graduated from St. George’s and the Sorbonne Paris with a degree in French Civilization. During WW II he served with the Canadian Air Force. He crossed the Atlantic three times as Captain of his own sail boat and spent many happy years exploring Europe and the Caribbean. He started his Newspaper career at the Province before transferring to the Vancouver Sun where he held the posts of New Westminster Bureau Chief and various Editorial positions over the 20 years he spent there. In 1979 he left the Sun for the opportunity to work on the Canadian Constitution. It was most important to him that British Columbia retain total rights over its renewable resources; water, fish and wind. As well as being witty, charming, clever and handsome he was, to quote Jack Webster, 'One of the few great intellectuals in the Canadian newspaper business'. He inspired so many of us to dream dreams bigger than our own lives, and to fulfill them. He will be forever loved and missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank the Staff of the KinVillage Care Home in Tsawwassen, where Evan spent 15 years after suffering a massive stroke in 1995, for their kind and devoted care and his loyal friends Charles and Leo Frizell and Trevor Lautens for their most appreciated visits. No service by request.

Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious to Wednesday – last-minute advances (especially Sunday and Wednesday) can be strong ones. You might have to struggle with foundational, home or family issues, though. The government, head office or an institution could offer splendid help Wednesday. (Take power naps Monday/Tuesday.) A month of social joys, friends, entertainment, flirtation (that can build to deep love) optimism and joie de vivre begins Thursday! And four months of great good luck starts Saturday, in love, travel, law, education. You’re on a roll! But settle into chores Friday eve, Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: A long, mellow period draws to a close. You might face – but more likely your close friends, associates face – a pulling apart between key people Monday/Tuesday. (E.g., your friends split up.) This is mostly gradual, deep: but look for clues, and seek early “accommodations,” as this is a decade-long trend. You might have to choose between love and casual friendship. Rest, tend to home matters Wednesday eve to Friday morn. A month of ambition begins Thursday (but first rest, to Friday). Romance, pleasure visit Friday eve, Saturday. Saturday to June 4, “head office” is your friend. Gemini May 21-June 20: Continue to chase facts/secrets, investments and sensual desires to Wednesday noon. You energy’s high Sunday. Buy nothing (nor invest) Monday nor Tuesday before 5 p.m. (PST). Thursday begins a month of gentle love, understanding, legal solutions, far travel, higher education or intellectual pursuits and publishing. Be curious Wednesday to Friday, ask questions. Friday eve and Saturday bring rest, domestic affairs, quietude. But Saturday also starts four months of social expansion, new friends, flirtations, wish fulfilment and happiness! And these four months kick off another 92!

Cancer June 21-July 22: A long month of opportunity and opposition ends Thursday. You probably feel you didn’t accomplish much, as this period began in confusion. But you have Sunday (planning) and Monday to Wednesday (action) to grab some last chance(s). Remember, independence, no; interdependence, yes – for now. Thursday begins a month of secrets, research (detective work) large finances, investments, lifestyle, health and sexual changes and commitments. And Saturday kicks off a period, through early June, of tremendous career and prestige benefits – both trends (change and career luck) combine soon! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Sunday’s happy, optimistic, friendly. But heavy chores still weigh on you through Wednesday. Just plunge in, get ’em done. DON’T start a new work project Monday or before 5 p.m. Tuesday. A month of fresh horizons (and emotional fresh air) arrives Wednesday night. You’ll experience opposition and opportunity – both intense. So be diplomatic yet eager. Saturday begins a four-month phase of great luck in far travel, higher education, publishing, legal affairs, cultural venues and love. You might fall in love and marry – swiftly! Focus on money, spending, earning Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be ambitious Sunday, or mingle with higher-ups. A month of romance and creativity draws to a close by midweek. Take care with friends, hopes, plans Monday to Tuesday suppertime – pursue all these afterward. Retreat, rest and contemplate your future Wednesday afternoon to Friday morning. Despite your uncertainty about job performance/stability, all looks fine. You begin a month of work and health issues Thursday. More importantly, you enter a four-month phase of great luck in investments, sexual liaisons, life changes and commitments, Saturday. (A clue Wednesday eve.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Sunday’s wise, mellow. Your ambition surges Monday to Wednesday, but take care with this Monday. Tuesday has obstacles to overcome (involving home or career foundations) but you can succeed – especially after supper and into Wednesday lunchtime. Thursday brings a month of celebration, optimism, flirtation, entertainment and social joys! Even better, Saturday starts a four-month phase of lucky opportunities, especially in marriage, love and relocation. Enjoy yourself WednesdayFriday, but Friday eve and this weekend, retreat, rest and contemplate: significant times loom! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: A restless, social month is ending. Thursday starts four weeks of quiet contemplation, physical sluggishness and domestic affairs. Sink into these, rest and refresh your soul, as February to June will bring a huge pile of work. Sunday’s mysterious; you might sense someone’s secret. This is a good, stable day to invest, work out a budget, or hold a private conversation. Monday to Wednesday is mellow, but holds barriers and problems before 5 p.m. (PST) Tuesday – and succeeds after that, especially in legal, educational and romantic arenas. Be ambitious Wednesday eve to Friday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You can find out where you stand with a crucial person Sunday. Financial and sexual obstacles arise Monday to dusk Tuesday; solutions appear after this, through Wednesday mid-day. A mellow, understanding mood steals over you Wednesday eve to Friday – love, intellectual pursuits thrive. Thursday starts a month of travel and communications, errands, emails, details, paperwork. More exciting, Saturday begins four months of great luck in romance, creative projects, far travel, with children and speculative projects. You’ll be offered happiness! Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday.

Jan. 16 - Jan. 22 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Tackle chores Sunday: pick the ones that will free you for more ambitious projects later. Relationships confront you Monday to Wednesday. These contain some opposition and frustrations through twilight Tuesday, then generate healing, solutions – and love – after that. Chase mysteries Wednesday eve to Friday morning – research, invest, study lifestyle changes, get your health diagnosed. Thursday’s fortunate. This day begins a month of money – buy, sell, seek more lucrative clients. Saturday begins a four-month stretch of great luck in real estate, home, family and security issues. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Romance – of a quiet, stable kind – or kids or creative pleasures – call Sunday. Be careful with chores Monday to Tuesday twilight. The danger: wasted effort. Tasks speed swiftly to conclusions Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday ends a month of weariness, solitude and obligations, as it starts four weeks of surging energy, heightened charisma and effective action! Start important projects soon, ask favours, show yourself off! (But first be diplomatic Thursday/Friday, and “sense secrets” Friday/Saturday.) Saturday begins four months of travel, talk and much paperwork. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Spend Sunday at home or in nature – all is restful, steady, quietly inspiring. Take care with romance, creative projects and gambles Monday to Tuesday dusk – these are fine, even lucky, then to Wednesday mid-day. (An 18-month “dead end” in romantic and creative zones ends this March.) Thursday begins a month of obligations, lowered energy and dealings with “head office.” Now to late February, rest, be charitable, contemplate and make plans for the future. Work smart, not hard. Saturday starts a four-month period of money luck – maybe big money luck! All things weave together. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
