Teachers campaign against tests BY
SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta teachers are urging parents not to have their children write Foundation Skills Assessment tests, even though the Ministry of Education deems participation mandatory. The annual tests for all students in grades 4 and 7, written since 2000, began this week. They’re aimed at gauging student abilities in reading, writing and numeracy.

nesting pairs are pretty well fixed now to their nest areas but the big part of the population are all these non-breeding birds, because they take five years to mature,” noted Hancock. “So when I went to the dump they were sometimes lined up 25 poles in a row of sub-adults. There’s a lot of sub-adults here right now because they’re free to move.” The breeding pairs face a lot of competition and stress from the younger, non-breeding eagles
As expected, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is once again campaigning against the FSA, saying the tests don’t help students learn or teachers teach, nor do they give parents any valuable information about their children’s progress. Instead, they take valuable time and much-needed resources away from the classroom and undermine teachers’ ability to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students, said federation president Susan Lambert. Critical of an open letter by Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid supporting the tests, Lambert noted the BCTF has been informing parents of teachers’ concerns about the testing and of a parental right to opt their children out of assessments with which they disagree. The federation has created information pamphlets for parents about the FSA as well as an

Eagles find Delta attractive
With poor salmon returns in usual haunts, birds flocking here in impressive numbers BY

An extraordinary number of eagles have recently made Delta their home. “Delta is a pretty impressive eagle habitat. You’ve got more nests, I suspect, than any other of the regional cities for North America, certainly for Canada,” said wildlife biologist David Hancock. The Hancock Wildlife Foundation has been closely monitoring what’s been happening in South Delta in recent weeks
due to extremely poor chum salmon runs in rivers from Alaska to Vancouver, which has forced the birds to seek new feeding grounds. Hancock said Boundary Bay and Roberts Bank undoubtedly make South Delta prime areas for nesting eagles as well as many younger roaming eagles. “It’s the richest area. It’s the richest for waterfowl, richest for shorebird and, as a result, it’s the richest raptor places, that’s why you have probably 3,500 eagles right now within the municipality of Delta,” he said.
Hancock noted over 7,200 eagles alone showed on the Chehalis in southwest B.C. briefly just a few weeks ago but now that number has dropped to only 348. Some of those birds ended up here, while it’s not clear what happened to many others. Almost 1,400 were counted by Hancock at the Vancouver Landfill, while hundreds were counted between the East Ladner landfill and Boundary Bay. About 25 to 30 nesting pairs are now preparing their nets and will lay their eggs by March. “Eagles are scavengers. The

Reach Child and Youth Development Society looking to build 20,000-square-foot facility at Memorial Park BY

Reach Child and Youth Development Society is embarking on a capital campaign to build a child development centre in the heart of Ladner. The $5 million project is a partnership between the society, the Corporation of Delta and the LadnerTsawwassen Kinsmen Cub. Delta will provide the land, valued at $1 million, while it’s up to the society to raise the money to build the 20,000-square-foot facility where the current Kin House is located on 47th Avenue edge of Memorial Park. The Kinsmen Club will continue to use the new building, while the facility will give the society a much larger and updated place to provide programs for youth with special needs. The society hopes to have the capital raised and a groundbreaking in four years. According to Reach, 15 per cent of the population has some form of special need. Cathy Nidoski, communications director of the non-profit group that has

The new building will become a demonstration site and a centre of expertise for promoting inclusion and best practices in early intervention and behavior support.
TESTS from page 1 opting out form they can submit to principals. The top part of the form is a message critical of the tests while the bottom part can be cut out and submitted to the principals, asking for students to be excused for a family emergency, lengthy illness or other extenuating circumstances. Paul Steer, president of the Delta Teachers Association, told the Optimist teachers have been consistent in their message, sending home literature to parents of students in grades 4 and 7 as they’ve done in previous years. The package includes the
request form to have children excused. Noting the message to parents seems to be getting through with FSA participation going down, Steer said, “I haven’t received any calls at the DTA complaining about this issue, but we’re certainly encouraging the teachers to distribute the information, the sheet called What Every Parent Needs to Know, and also a little brochure that affirms the fact teachers do believe in testing but not the inappropriate use of standardized tests.” Noting the participation rate in Delta has been con-

elsewhere for food. “What we’re seeing is a distribution of the eagles’ normal pattern and we’re seeing a lot of birds here, which sounds exciting, but it’s not good because we shouldn’t be seeing as many eagles. They should be up the coast,” Hancock said. “You’ve got a world-class
The society’s current centre on 72nd Street in East Ladner, at one time a residence for mentally challenged youth, is in a less than ideal location and can no longer serve its needs. “It’s more efficient and effective to move right into town with a facility that’s built with the needs of our program in mind and the
needs of the community in mind, rather than trying to constantly adapt to the building we are in,” said Nidoski. She said the Building for Children campaign now getting underway hopes to land support from service organizations, businesses and corporations, foundations and potential grants,
as well as individuals. The fundraising includes naming opportunities for various parts of the building and a donor wall. Nidoski said events are also being planned for the coming months, including a walk-a-thon in June. Reach Child and Youth Development Society, formerly known as the Delta
Association for Child Development, also has programs that serve youth and parents in Surrey and Langley, although the majority of its offerings are for Delta children. For more information about what the society offers and the fundraising campaign, visit www.reachdevelopment.org/campaign.
sistently strong at around 85 per cent, assistant superintendent Garnet Ayres said the direction from the ministry continues to be that all students participate in the FSA, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Parents may request their children don’t participate but that would be a conversation involving the principal, said Ayres. “We want to make sure that we’re clear on the expectation that the vast majority of children will participate,” he added. Jameel Aziz, president of the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-principals’ Association, said this week whether a standardized test can provide critical infor-
mation to teachers, parents and students no longer seems to be the debate. Among the problems now facing the FSA, noted Aziz, is that the BCTF has successfully undermined participation to the point it’s less than 50 per cent in some districts. The Fraser Institute publishes annual rankings of B.C. schools that rely heavily on FSA results, rankings the BCTF routinely criticizes. Last year only one Delta public elementary school was ranked in the top 100. Meanwhile, according to the latest achievement contract recently presented to the Delta school board and to be submitted to the ministry, Delta’s high school
graduation rate increased slightly last year to around 87 per cent. Delta’s rate has consistently been above the provincial average.
Ayres said the number that didn’t graduate includes international students here for short stays or students who moved.
unique circumstance happening here in Delta.” OWL (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society) director Bev Day said it’s obvious by just looking around there’s a much higher eagle population here than normal. On a tree near West Coast Instant Lawns on 72nd Street, for example, 25 eagles are perched. The huge number of eagles has resulted in a lot
of fighting among birds for food as well as conflicts with other bird species. “The aerial display may look awesome but we’re just waiting to get more (birds at the shelter) in due to inter-species fighting,” she said. There was even a report of an eagle swooping down at a small dog recently. Day said in the last week two eagles were brought to
her rescue centre suffering from gunshot wounds. She said it’s not certain who is responsible. The centre has also been getting many calls from concerned citizens that see eagles sitting on the ground and assume they’re injured. As far as all the eagles congregating at the landfill, Day noted not many of them actually scavenge for food there.
She said a Canadian Wildlife Service study five years ago found most of the birds go to the Vancouver Landfill for the heat, not to eat garbage. According to that study, eagle time at the landfill consisted of mostly resting. Cameras have been placed over two new eagle nests in South Delta. They can be viewed at www.hancockwildlife.org.

Proposal would see care home turned into student dormitory BY
SANDOR GYARMATI

A former private 29-bed care home at the corner of Ladner Trunk Road and 57th Street could become a residence for international students and their families. The new owner of the building, formerly known as Heritage Home, has made inquiries about opening a dormitory for students from China that would study in Delta schools.
School district officials, who discussed the proposal with their civic counterparts at a recent liaison meeting, were told the application would have to go through a rezoning process. The building would also have to be brought up to code because its condition has deteriorated in the three years since the seniors’ home closed. Noting the district has an excellent home stay program for international
students, school board chair Dale Saip told the Optimist it was only recently made aware of the proposal and is not involved in the pending application. Five years ago, Delta council shot down a proposed land swap by the school board that would have paved the way for the district to build a dormitory further east on Ladner Trunk Road that could have housed as many as 300 students.

Mayor Miguel Becker, who is responsible for the board of education, to open three more language labs in schools located in Mapuche communities. A team of six Ladner Rotarians and their spouses travelled to Chile recently to observe the progress of this experience. They met with Becker, who was moved by the greetings from Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, and told them this Rotary initiative had underlined the needs of Mapuche communities. Looking to the future, the team visited the community of Padre Las Casas, where a mouldy, sparsely equipped clinic with no running water stands in the middle of a field. The two clubs are look-

Around 300,000 Mapuche First Nations live in their ancestral land in the south of Chile, around the city of Temuco. In spite of commitments to help preserve their language, Mapudungun, few children had the opportunity to learn it at school. This caught the attention of the Rotary Club of Temuco, which asked for assistance from its sister club, the Ladner Rotary. With the help of Rotary International and their own fundraising, the clubs were able to finance a computer language lab that is helping the children learn Mapudungun, as well as English, on top of the mandatory Spanish. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Much was made a few weeks ago when it was revealed the NDP’s constitution stipulates at least one of its big three positions — party leader, president or treasurer — has to be held by a woman. With the latter two currently occupied by men, it meant Carole James’ replacement had to be female. Many expressed concern, and rightly so, about this attempt at affirmative action, arguing the best person should be chosen leader, regardless of their gender. It appears the NDP has heeded this logical response and isn’t going to demand its next leader be female, which is good considering there are no women among the party’s six declared leadership candidates. With that seemingly out of the way, now there are concerns the leadership lineups for both parties aren’t reflective of the cultural makeup of our province, nor are they gender balanced. Of the 12 candidates seeking to become premier, only one, Harry Lali, is a visible minority. There are two women and the rest, nine of them, are that staple of North American politics: white guys. I certainly understand why well-meaning people would push to ensure our government reflects society’s makeup, but I’m not so sure we have to force the issue. We certainly have to ensure political office is within the grasp of people from all backgrounds, and both genders, but to mandate certain outcomes goes too far. In the last provincial election in Delta South, which is — how should I put this delicately? — less culturally diverse than many ridings in the Lower Mainland, a white woman bested two men of colour. There wasn’t a white guy within 9,000 votes of the winner. Has Delta had a female mayor for more than two decades because of some quota requirement? No, it’s because voters thought Lois Jackson, and Beth Johnson before her, were the best candidates for the job. Much was made when Jackson was the first woman elected to Delta council and again when Johnson became the municipality’s first mayor. It wasn’t that long ago those breakthroughs happened, yet today we don’t think twice about whether a council member is male or female. Hopefully in the not too distant future the issue of gender, as well as ethnicity, at senior levels of government becomes a moot point too. It’s unfortunate the current collection seeking the leadership of both major parties looks more like the 1970s than the new millennium, but the evolution of a society doesn’t take place overnight. It takes time and it can’t be mandated.

Course takes pains to be quiet Leaves fall in the fall and grass clippings are a problem in late spring. The blower in question is generally used for approximately six weeks out of every year with the occasional use in the summer or winter. As for the machines used to cut grass, they are measured at 81 db and could not be mistaken as “noisy” or “intrusive.” As this is not the first letter Sabo has written regarding the start times of our machinery, I would like to clarify that from the beginning of October through the middle of March, our maintenance facility opens at 7:30 a.m. If it is a day that blowers are used, they are not on the golf course until after 8 a.m. And in trying to be the best neighbours we can be, we start them on holes as far away from the border as possible. Our fifth hole that runs along the border is the last hole that gets worked on with the blower.
In the summer our maintenance facility opens between 5:30 and 6 a.m. While we are located in Whatcom County, we do our best to adhere to Delta’s noise ordinance and as such do not ever start the blowers before 7 a.m. We have made modifications to our equipment to make it as quiet as we can make it, in the process making them less efficient. But as a committed good neighbour, we continue to use the equipment in that fashion. As Sabo pointed out in his own words, “you can lessen the misery for some people, but not all the people.” As a facility, we feel we have done all we can to balance the two sides of providing an exceptional golf experience with being a good neighbour to our friends in Tsawwassen. Sabo has written at least two letters to this paper in the last year outlining his complaints, but has never actually contacted us with
Driver speeds away after hitting dog Editor: Last Saturday my family’s dog got hit by a car. Her name was Pinkey and she was six years old. My sister and I were driving home from the barn and when we got home, I opened my car door and Pinkey went running across our street to chase our neighbour’s cat. My sister and I ran after her, calling at her to come back. Around the corner came a guy who not only didn’t live in our neighbourhood, but who was driving way too fast. My sister and I started
Pinkey screaming at him to stop, but he didn’t even try to hit the brakes. He just drove over her. This was in our own neighbourhood, right in front of our house. If he had tried to hit the brakes to stop or to slow down, she would have made it.
He didn’t even stop after to say sorry. He sped away. A neighbour followed him to the McDonald’s parking lot where he taped up his licence plate. When he saw our neighbour, the guy got in his car and sped away. He ran a red light at 56th Street and 17th Avenue. Luckily we got the licence plate number, but nothing will ease the pain of Pinkey being killed. We bred her and raised her, and whoever did this has no idea how much pain he has caused our family and friends. Caitlyn Hoolsema

Editor: Re: Forget airplanes, it’s golf courses that are noisy, letter to the editor, Jan. 15 Don Sabo compares the noise of airplanes to that of golf course machinery. A little perspective is needed here. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the decibels created by a jet plane at 100 feet are the same as a gun blast from close range and measure at 140 db. They’re clearly unhealthy levels without hearing protection. The documented noise level of our loudest piece of machinery is 94 db at close range without modification. In reference to Sabo’s assertion the noise comes from machines used to pick up leaves and cut grass and can start as early as 6 a.m., we do use a blower for blowing fallen leaves off the fairways or in certain conditions to blow grass clippings off the fairways.

MLA needs convincing on safety of combo vehicles
Editor: Re: Police dep’t applauded for its support of truck trains, letter to the editor, Jan. 5 B.C. Trucking Association president Paul Landry’s criticism that our concern for public safety is simply ignorance of the issue of long-combination vehicles (LCVs) is most unfortunate. Neither the province, Maersk, Delta, nor Landry himself have provided the residents of Delta South with any information about these vehicles — aside from the bureaucratic assurance the rules will be followed. But the rules are exactly what the public needs to know and that is what Landry, et al, should be addressing. The normal B-Train that we see all the time is 25 metres. LCVs, however, are tractors pulling two trailers each loaded with a 40-foot container: LCVs are 34 metres and more. While LCVs in Alberta and Saskatchewan have been a success story, they are not the same configuration as the vehicles used here: the 40-foot container represents a considerable difference and my first question would be whether Landry can show us evaluations that not only take
into consideration that significant change, but that also look at worst case scenarios? Has anybody in authority advised us whether the criteria developed in other jurisdictions — following a successful LCV pilot program — have been put in place and how they have been adjusted to local circumstances? Canada is a world leader in the development of performance measures for heavy trucks, so tell us what those measures are as they relate to LCVs running on our roads. Are there seasonal operating restrictions (as in many other jurisdictions) or is that necessary in the Lower Mainland? LCVs elsewhere are only allowed on divided highways: what are the rules going to be for River Road, an already unsafe, undivided, congested roadway? What is Maersk’s detailed maintenance schedule? How many owner/operators work with the Maersk fleet? Will drivers be operating to the higher standards required for LCVs? Will Maersk have road supervision? On/off ramps used by LCVs normally meet stringent requirements, but there are no ramps off River Road to Maersk, so what
are the standards being used to ensure performance safety? If local performance measures have been developed, were they developed using worst case scenarios? Performance standards exist and we need to know what they are and how they have been adjusted for local conditions. Information on LCVs needs to be readily available. The website for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation has an easyto-find page for “Ontario LCV Pilot Program, Questions and Answers.” The only information about LCVs on the B.C. Transportation website seems to be “Form T-59, Conditions for LCVs” and “Form T-59A, LCV Designated Routing” (which doesn’t mention Delta). Authorities, including Landry (who is certainly a leading authority on trucking), have an obligation to give Delta residents answers about the performance standards that will relate to the introduction of long-combination vehicles on our roads. And until that happens, I will remain concerned about LCVs and the safety of the people of Delta. Vicki Huntington Delta South MLA

Support for suggestion to weed out the bad eggs
Editor: Re: Identify those teachers who aren’t pulling weight, letter to the editor, Jan. 19 Good on Bob Orrick (whom I take to be a wizened octogenarian — unless he married as a pre-teen!). Better screening and hiring practices. Nobody below B+ from SFU, say.
Having said that, my experiences over four decades as teacher, editor and HR director convince me the bell curve theory of competence and excellence plays itself out as much in workplace lunch rooms as it does in classrooms. A few are complete failures and a few are superstars, while all the
rest comprise a big hump and muddle between those extremes. Now whether any Liberal would qualify for merit pay as a politician in the 20102011 B.C. parliamentary year is a pretty dubious proposition. Same goes for this teacher merit pay goofiness of Kevin Falcon. W. Baird Blackstone

High water rates hinder farmers
Issue will be one of many discussed at upcoming agricultural plan workshop Delta farmers and those involved with the agricultural community are invited to attend an upcoming workshop of the Agricultural Advisory Committee. The Feb. 2 workshop at the Ladner United Church is another opportunity to discuss local farming issues and what’s needed to enhance the economic viability of farming in Delta. Senior civic staff and the civic advisory committee have been gathering feedback and ideas for a new agricultural plan for the municipality, which is to be completed this year. About 40 people attended a workshop last October where key issues were discussed, including non-farm use in the Agricultural Land Reserve, education, accessibility, loss of the farmland base, roads and transportation, and affordability of water. An issue that’s certain to come up again is the price
of potable water and how it’s putting the squeeze on farmers. At a committee meeting late last year, members conveyed the concern to a policy analyst with Metro Vancouver who made a presentation on the region’s proposed Food Systems Strategy. It was noted potable water rates are much higher in this region than other regions. The issue was also discussed at Delta council recently, where Coun. Ian Paton, a director of the Delta Farmers’ Institute, said tougher new regulations require local potato farmers to wash their product several times on site. Some are stuck with a $75,000 annual bill for their metered water, he said. Mayor Lois Jackson told the Optimist Delta has already made a case at the regional level that farmers need help with the rates to make products clean for the consumer. “As you can appreciate, the supermarket stores, they want those potatoes clean,

Ian Paton says some farmers are hit with an annual water bill of as much as $75,000. clean, clean, but it’s very costly to do that and I’ve been told they have to wash it up to five times to make it clean. That takes a lot of water and the only source of good potable water is from the tap,” she said. At a Delta Chamber of Commerce panel discussion on the challenges facing the farming industry last year, Murray Driediger, president and CEO of BC Fresh, noted Delta’s cost of potable water is 30 per cent higher than just across the border in Point Roberts and more than five times the average in California. The community came together over the recent holiday season to host a number of fundraisers to support the Delta Hospice Society. Although the Irene Thomas Hospice and Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care have been up and running for a year, the society still hasn’t reached its $8.5 million target so continues efforts to raise the final 10 per cent. The following is a description of recent fundraising activities: Candlelight Yoga Classes at Open Space Yoga Michael Rudd, owner of Open Space Yoga, raised $1,450 thanks to members of the community who attended candlelight yoga classes and made purchases at the Ladner studio. “We can’t thank Michael enough for his dedication to Delta Hospice and the awareness all of his efforts bring,” said Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey. “We feel so fortunate to be chosen to benefit
from all of this hard work and community commitment.” “I am so pleased with the outpouring of support the studio has received from students, teachers and the community to our many fundraising events,” said Rudd. “Many thanks to Irmgard, one of our dedicated yogis, for raising $360 through hand-knitted savasana socks and those in the community who contribute in other ways, whether it was by attending our candlelight yoga classes, volunteering at fundraising events or by making a donation to support the cause.” Wade from Evolutions Hair Salon Wade Gibson from Evolutions Hair Salon in Ladner accepted tips and donations for Delta Hospice in November and December. Gibson does not accept gratuities for his hair services throughout the year, but during the 2010 holiday season he chose to accept them to benefit Delta Hospice, raising $3,600 in the process. “I am so appreciative of

the generosity of my clients,” said Gibson. “They embraced my decision to raise money for the Delta Hospice Society. I couldn’t be happier and feel fortunate to live in such a kind, caring community.” Music & Dessert Evening at Cedar Park Over 150 people enjoyed the musical talents of Carol Peters and Gail Salmond as well as delicious desserts. In addition to the music, two guest speakers shared their own personal experiences with Delta Hospice. “The music kicked, the sharing was poignant and insightful, the food delicious and, most important, we raised awareness in the community of the important work that Delta Hospice is doing in bringing dignity and loving care to those that are at the end of their life’s journey,” said worship pastor Roy Salmond. A $4,000 donation was from proceeds of the evening and sale of a Christmas compilation CD where individual songs were donated by a variety of local musicians. Volunteers of Cedar Park were out in the community through the holiday season selling the CDs. Ovation Concert Series Michelle Jones and Tracy Neff welcomed 2011 by hosting a concert at Cedar Park Church on Jan. 8. Tracy Neff and Friends in Concert was a creative collaboration with friends and fellow professionals who are passionate about bringing old and new works to life. Accompanied by fellow performers Tony Barton, Caitlin Hayes, Deanna Gutierreez and Chris Harvey, this talented group raised $1,925. “I am grateful that our community has such a wonderful organization that provides much needed facilities and services. Tracy is a fantastic young philanthropist in bringing awareness to the community about the hospice and supporting an important cause; I hope that others follow her lead,” said Jones. It was the second show Neff has performed for Delta Hospice and she has another one planned for March 12. Since opening last February, the Irene Thomas Hospice has admitted over 100 patients.

South Delta Stroke Recovery Group president Peter McTait was joined by pianist Pat Rogers at a recent event to mark Robbie Burns Day. Rogers played for the Scottish sing-a-long after McTait did the honours to the haggis in a very convincing Scottish brogue. Members of the stroke recovery group enjoyed participating in the entertainment. The weekly meetings, held on Tuesdays at the Tsawwassen United Church, build friendships that feel like an extension of family. scene, more than aware of the enormous human suffering of the Jewish people, the stifling corruption of the Temple Elite and the oppressive heel of the Roman Empire grinding the life out of his people. His choice is not to retreat to his father’s carpenter shop and take over the family business. Neither does he call for a committee to study temple reform, community planning or alternative government. Even the beheading of his cousin John did not stop him from returning to Galilee to preach, teach and heal. I keep a running list of maxims that I strive to live by. One came my way recently: “Begin anywhere.” It’s worthy to become a part of my list. Facing the challenges of modernity such as the incredible basic needs of so much of the world’s population, including the impoverished in Canada, you know our common responses. Out of fear and a sense of “I’m just one person, what can I do?” we retreat to looking out for number one. Or we strike some form of a committee and get embroiled in a process that becomes not a means to accomplishing an end but rather the end in itself. “Begin anywhere!” Jesus knew that. It’s one of the many things I love about him. At age 30 Jesus emerges on the public

pair of former So You Think You Can Dance Canada contestants will be taking part in an upcoming show in Ladner. The Flow Dance Company’s members are looking forward to having Mackenzie Green and Nathalie Heath on stage at the group’s performance next Sunday at Genesis Theatre. “It’s so exciting. Even the teachers are jumping up and down,” says Julie Brash, artistic director and founder of The Flow. Green and Heath, who’s from Surrey, were top 10 finalists last year in the TV show’s third season. “The experience on stage was more than I imagined, and it was a lot of hard work,” Heath told the Surrey Now after her run on the contest came to an end. “So many things happen behind the scenes.” Brash says both Green and Heath are “incredible and versatile” dancers. They may each do a solo or they may do a hip-hop duo from the TV show at next Sunday’s performance, she notes. Brash views the TV show, which features dancers from across the country competing for a $100,000 grand prize, as something positive for the industry. “The thing with So You Think You Can Dance Canada is that it’s a forum that’s brought dance really into the limelight again. It’s been a dying art, almost, in a lot of ways especially ... in North America where sports are much more sponsored.” Amy Gardner, another So You Think You Can Dance Canada alumni, has choreographed two pieces for this upcomSUBMITTED PHOTO ing show, Brash says. have continued on with their dancing careers. One of those dancers, Deanna Motzek, will be doing a Spanish ballet fusion number. The show will include about 35 dancers. It’s a busy time for most of them. “A whole lot of them are working on their ballet exams, as well as competition, as well as the Flow show,” Brash says. Green and Heath will also be teaching a pair of master classes at Free Flight Dance Studio in Ladner next Saturday. One will be a contemporary class and the other will cover street jazz fusion. The classes are open to all dancers. Sunday’s show is set for 3 p.m. at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. Tickets cost $10 and are available by calling 604-946-8586.

Tsawwassen author Louise Latremouille covers Windows 7 in her latest computer guidebook. Latremouille released My Parents Get Windows 7 late last month. “The writing of it was actually kind of twofold. The first time I had thought I had finished it in August and then Microsoft released an update, which changed everything.” Microsoft’s latest Windows operating system is “much more user friendly and co-operative” than previous editions.
“It’s nice. They’ve really incorporated so many things that people are using every day and made it so much easier to use,” says Latremouille, who has written a series of easy to understand computer and Internet guidebooks. She got started by putting together how-to notes for her parents after they received a hand-me-down PC in the early 2000s, organizing the notes into a book and printing 20 copies for family and friends. Latremouille, who lost her father to cancer in 2003, donates a portion of the profits from her book sales towards cancer research and patient care. She’s donated close to $25,000 so far. My Parents Get Windows 7 is available locally at Black Bond Books in Ladner and Albany
Books in Tsawwassen as well as online at www.myparentsfirst.com. • Latremouille also wants to get the word out about the importance of computer literacy and parents keeping up with their kids in that regard. “It’s important. And it’s not getting across how important it is. There are so many parents who don’t have time,” she says. Kids need to be taught about online social etiquette and being safe online at an early age, she says, adding that explaining the privacy settings on Facebook, a social networking site, are one example. “Parents need to talk to their kids about being careful and being smart and being respectful.”

Irises bring colour to late winter gloom anne marrison
Green Room As winter begins losing its grip, the first dwarf irises start pushing through
newly-thawed ground making little pools of purple, yellow or white among the winter debris. They’re a pleasure that’s so easy to prepare for in fall — bulbs of Iris reticulata hybrids and their relatives are inexpensive and easy to find in garden centres.
Because they flower around the same time as snowdrops and winter aconites, it’s best to plant them at the same time — in September or early October. These irises are quick to increase in sunny places with well-drained soil. They adapt to most conditions
but do better if acidic soil is corrected with a little lime. Fertilizer should be lownitrogen and given after the flowers die down. Clay soil gardeners with wet soil may find container culture or raised beds the best choice. Putting sand in the bottom of the plant-
Dear SwarmJam I wanted to instantly express my thanks for your advice. I thought I knew a lot about advertising, as I own Imageworks, a Graphic Design and Web Design Studio. I am often correct in my assessments... but you proved that I still have more to learn! I signed up Magic Clean, a pressure washing and window cleaning provider, for SwarmJam; I thought the ad should run in late March or April. You assured me it would work now in early January... even though it’s cold and quite miserable outside! I was hesitant about running it now but you assured me it would WORK and BOY, oh BOY you were right!
THE AD APPEARED TODAY!
• By 7 a.m. we had 3 people buy. Who gets up that early to buy? • At 11 a.m. we had 12 new clients • At 6 p.m. we had 24 buyers • WHOOPS... another just signed up as I am typing! That’s 25 and growing • WHOOPS... 3 more signed up.That’s 28 now! WE HAVE 4 days to to go!!!!
MY PERSONAL ADVICE TO ADVERTISERS • Get in on the SwarmJam bandwagon today, before your competitors do. • Think carefully about your costs, because if done right it will far exceed your expectations. • Try to make it a value that is great for buyers, while still affordable to you!
Warmly from, Brian Budd and the MagicClean Team

ing hole can help, but if the soil is generally wet, you may find you’ve produced a sump that attracts surrounding water. These irises come from hilly areas around the eastern Mediterranean and are happiest in their homeland climates. This is generally drenching rains in winter and early spring followed by long, hot waterless summers. Iris reticulata flowers emerge first, then produce thin, wispy leaves that can get well over one foot (30 cm), but because they’re so insubstantial they pose no problems to neighbouring plants. The flowers are usually only about four or five inches tall. That’s why the best positions for them are usually in rockeries or close to the edges of paths where they’re easy to see and there’s lots of light. As temperatures increase, the leaves die and the bulbs go dormant underground. Like other Mediterranean bulbs in summer dormancy, they need no water; in fact, watering adequate for annuals can make these Iris reticulata hybrids sick. Hybrids available include Cantab (light blue with yellow markings), Gordon (maroon-purple), Harmony (medium blue with yellow details), Natascha (bluish-white with orange) and Joyce (lavender-blue and purple with orange tongue). Another small late-winter
bloomer is Iris danfordiae, which flowers bright yellow with brown freckles and prefers well-drained soil that’s rich but light. It’s inexpensive and beautifully fragrant but it’s a frustrating little beauty because after flowering it splits into many tiny bulblets. Many tulips do the same thing and one solution some gardeners try is planting the original bulb at least eight inches deep. The same answer has been proposed for Iris danfordiae. It’s hard to imagine these little bulbs can generate enough energy to produce an eight-inch stem. But it’s definitely worth trying because other bulbs and corms can rise from the depths. For instance, when I tried to eradicate the plain orange crocosmia from a garden bed I found “dropper” corms at different levels connected by thin roots in a vertical chain. The deepest were at least a foot down in the soil. If you don’t dig up all those deep, deep corms (and it turned out I didn’t), the crocosmia bed reincarnates in a few years. Snowdrops also make dropper corms. Droppers can be annoying for gardeners, but for the plant it’s a brilliant tactic that ensures survival if animals eat the uppermost bulb or planthunters harvest it. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca.

Laugh, Purple Giraffe, a Richmond-based improvisation troupe of 10 members that was formed in 2010. The ensemble will perform a set using improvisation, a form of theatre that is unscripted and unrehearsed Returning to the Tsawwassen stage are singers Kiana Passmore and Paul Thomas. Passmore, who has performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival and won the B.C. Junior Talent Search, will sing pop music. From Holly Elementary, classical singer Thomas will sing a contemporary song and classical opera. He was a finalist in the Ladner May Days Idol competition and a semifinalist in the 2010 Red Robinson Talent Showdown at the PNE. New to the stage are seven-year-old Taylor Robinson and Delta Secondary graduate Josephine Walker. Robinson, a budding actress who will sing a solo in the program, recently played the role of Gretl Von

The Delta Arts Council’s Young People’s Concert Series continues next Saturday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre with some music, a one-act play and an improv troupe. To ring in 2011, the January program explores and introduces a performing art — acting — that is completely new to the series. South Delta Secondary actors Beau Bridge, Jemma Dash and Sam Merritt will perform a comedic one-act play from the school’s oneact festival. Chosen by SDSS drama teacher Paige Hansen, LOL is a play written by 17-yearold Lee Cannon-Brown. It involves a therapy session between a downtrodden everyman kind of character (Merritt) and a totally strange and unorthodox therapist (Bridge) who is completely narcissistic and unprofessional. The third character is the therapist’s wife (Dash), who actually enters the session and further estranges the patient. Those who love live improv will enjoy Make Me

Watch out for the storms in Tofino Lots to look at even if weather doesn’t get bad enough for gale gawking

narly gusts violently buffet the Orca Airways eight-seater aircraft, sending my stomach into a tailspin as we descend through the dripping rainforest draped mountains toward Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island’s Wild West coast. It’s early November, hardly the most reliable time of year to be taking the 55-minute flight from Vancouver to Tofino. But since I’ve come hoping to watch one of the legendary winter storms that rise out of the Pacific without warning to lay monumental beatings on this pristine stretch of coastline, a little turbulence en route seems appropriate. From November to March, when most winter weather-weary Canadians yearn for tropical getaways, a peculiar subspecies of traveller heads instead to Tofino, lured by the quaint-
ly romantic notion of facing down the elements while being pampered in five-star resorts and stuffed with local delicacies like dashi braised Pacific octopus and boiled Dungeness crab. Perched literally on the end of the road (next stop, Japan), this former logging and fishing village turned ecotourism poster-town still moves to its own mellow rhythm. Artists, activists, surfers and dreamers all flock here, where tempestuous seas pound the jagged coastline and the driftwood and bull kelp strewn beaches stretch forever. As we touch down at Tofino’s airstrip, I’m already looking forward to that first celebratory martini in the lounge of Wickaninnish Inn, with its panoramic ocean view. Certainly it won’t be long before I race back to my room, pull on the hotel’s complimentary lemon yellow rain slickers, and venture out into a seething, foaming squall, shouting, laughing and flapping my

arms at the apoplectic elements like Big Bird on meth as the salt spray stings my grinning lips. But on this day, no oceanic convulsions threaten to lay siege to Chesterman Beach, where the “Wick” sits perched on a rocky outcrop, as opulent an outpost as you’ll find in these parts. Not even owner Charles McDiarmid, said to have invented the concept of storm watching here as a surefire way of drawing offseason traffic, can accommodate me by conjuring climactic chaos.
It’s a good thing, then, there are plenty of other natural wonders to watch while I wait for the big one to roll in. Whales, for instance. Tofino and neighbouring Ucluelet are the two most popular northern grey whale-watching communities on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Each spring, more than 20,000 of these enormous mammals swim north from their winter breeding grounds in Baja California to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska.
Many linger near Tofino, feeding intensively on invertebrates like amphipods and marine worms that live in bottom sediments. A grey whale can devour over 1,000 kilograms a day. “We’re in luck. The whales are watching us today,” says West Coast Aquatic Safaris skipper Tim Thom as we head out of Tofino Harbour for a threehour whale watching tour. This late in the season, our chances of spotting their telltale spouts are hit and miss. But Thom, a member of the Nuuchahnulth First Nations community, is confident of a sighting. Sure enough, several grey and humpback whales soon deem us worthy of a friendly flick of the tail before the salt spray settles and their glistening black fins vanish beneath the surface, barely 30 metres away. Back on shore, with still no storm in sight, I borrow the keys to the Wick’s Lexus RX 450h hybrid SUV (complimen-
tary for guests holding a valid Canadian driver’s licence). Cruising the coastal highway dividing the old growth forests of Pacific Spirit National Park from an unbroken string of gargantuan beaches, I pull over at Cox Bay to watch dozens of hooded neoprene wetsuit clad warriors plow through the whitewash hunting for fast breakers. It’s easy to see why this stretch of coastline is also North America’s cold water surfing capital that recently hosted the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, featuring the world’s best surfers. The next morning — my last on the left coast — breaks calm and sunny. Perfect for flying, not gale gawking. But such is the beauty of Tofino that, despite my best laid storm watching schemes gone awry, there is so much else to watch here on the edge of the world that catching a winter storm (and there are plenty of them) is but a blustery bonus.

Delta Falcons celebrate history at registration night BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The season is still nearly three months away but field hockey fever was evident in a big way at the South Delta Recreation Centre last week thanks to the efforts of the Delta Falcons. The Tsawwassen-based club held its Junior Spring League registration night and it went well beyond a couple of sign-up tables. It was a night to celebrate the organization’s rich 43-year-old history that includes producing over 20 national team players and Olympians. A number of them were in attendance, including current men’s national team players Rob Short and Mark Pearson. Vendors were also on hand with the latest sticks, equipment and clothing. Adding even more to the special evening was a genuine legacy set of Olympic and Paralympic Medals from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. Parents and kids had the special oppor-
tunity of having their picture taken with medals for a small donation to the club’s long-term project – installing field hockey turf at its main Winskill Park pitch. “For me, the magic in having the medals come was not the fundraising, but the connection with Rob Short and all of the athletes in the room, literally spanning from six to 60 years of age,” said Falcons president Mike Gunning, a former elite player with the club himself who is now giving back at the executive level. “That was a terrific example of what sport is capable of in terms of uniting people.” The club also thanks Teck Resources for the rare opportunity to see the legacy medals up close and remind everyone the power of sport to unite and inspire. Teck Resources was the official provider of the metals for the gold, silver and bronze medals awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Registration night is the

Short hopes to play in London Games
Long-serving national field hockey team captain would love for the 2012 Olympics to be his swan song MARK BOOTH
Rob Short wants nothing more than London to be the final stage of his exceptional field hockey career. On the brink of becoming Canada’s most decorated player with 315 international caps to his credit, the long-serving team captain from Tsawwassen would love for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games to be his swan song. “Unfortunately, I would love to keep playing until I’m 50 but I was born in England and a great way to go out would be to have my
grandmother watch me play there,” smiled the 38-yearold. “It would be a dream come true to play at the Olympics in London.” To do that, Canada must win gold at the Pan Am Games later this year in Mexico or win a qualifier tournament for a wild card berth. The first opportunity is considered the Canadians’ best chance and it was how they got to Beijing in 2008. A strong showing at the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi, with a relatively young squad, has fuelled optimism moving forward. Only his birth certificate
Tides at Tsawwassen Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet
would suggest Short is in the twilight career. In 2009, he achieved the sport’s ultimate honour when he was named he was named to the FIH All-World Team – reflecting his play for Canada and in the Dutch professional league where he has been a mainstay for the past 13 years. Making the honour even more impressive is Short plays what is considered the sport’s most vital position – centre midfield. He has played on three different teams in Holland and remains a hot commodity. The season runs from September until June
and includes a three-month break. Short was getting set to return to Europe and his HGC Den Haag teammates when he made an appearance at the Delta Falcons Junior Spring League registration night. “When I first went there I got $2,000 and it was just for the experience,” Short explained. “I wanted to get better to make the Olympics and all of a sudden it started to get more professional. I took it to a whole new level and I wouldn’t be playing there now if I couldn’t. “You go over there as a Canadian playing in one
of the best leagues in the world and they are thinking, ‘What is this guy doing here?’” (Canada) is now top 10 in the world but it took a while to get respect.” Short is typically bouncing back between continents – with his playing career in Europe and business interests in North America. He is looking forward to settling down back at home and having the time to be more involved in the grassroots development of field hockey including with the Falcons where it all began for him 28 years ago. Short will be rejoining his Canadian teammates,
Rob Short including Tsawwassen’s Mark Pearson, at the 2011 FIH Men’s Indoor World Cup – Feb. 8-13 in Poland.

Charles Adrian
January 18, 1935 – January 17, 2011 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Adrian on Monday morning at Peace Arch Hospital with Gloria at his side. Adrian is lovingly remembered by his sisters Sylvia and Margaret (Fred) and brother Louis (Joy), sister in laws Irene (Steve), Leona, Doris and brother in law Peter and many nieces, nephews and friends. Adrian was born in Meota, Sask., moved to New Westminster when he was five years old and was forever grateful to his father for that decision. With brother Louis he continued his father’s business, Lavigne’s Engine Rebuilders on Kingsway for 47 years. His love of sports led him to coach Senior Women’s Softball for over 30 years. His accomplishments were acknowledged by Softball Canada and Softball BC and he was inducted into both Halls of Fame. His many other accolades are too numerous to mention. In later years he found golf to be a formidable competition which he grew to love.
We would like to thank all the nurses, staff, doctors and volunteers at Peace Arch Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion. These people are truly special.

Vic ‘Smiley’ Vaitkus
April 16, 1926 - Jan. 15, 2011 Vic will be remembered as a good, hard-working man, an inspirational father, and a generous grandfather. His legacy of ‘never ending’ change, smiles and humility will mark foundational goals for future Vaitkus generations. A service will be held in Toronto on February 5th, 2011. Vic donated his body to UBC Medical Research so that future doctors could benefit from his life; from his passing.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Secrets, depths, sexual urges, subconscious nudges, large finances, net worth, other people’s money and resources – these fill the weeks ahead. Research, look beneath surface appearances. Love vows or business agreements are one thing; commitment to share, delivering the funds, is another. Now it’s commitment time. You either get deeper, or break off. Tackle errands Sunday morning. Home, kids and security, nature and nutrition capture your attention this eve to Tuesday. Romance has a bit of a rough ride mid-week. Still, joy exists! Tackle chores Friday/Saturday – you succeed! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, contracts, negotiations, opportunities and opposition. Emotions intensify; there’s little middle ground. Love and hate swirl. Your romantic sensors are fine-tuned, and luck flows into all communications. In short, you might fall in love now or soon, or heal a valuable, longterm bond. This week isn’t the easiest, or the hardest. Communications, travel succeed Sunday p.m. to Tuesday. Recuperate, rest mid-week. Various frictions arise, perhaps with a partner. Be diplomatic. Romance, creativity, luck soar Thursday night to Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A time of great change is upon you. It might affect where you live. It’s lucky, and occurs now to early June. During the same period, your romantic, creative and child-oriented projects/links will tread water – that gives you the time and focus to concentrate on this change. It is the first of two steps – the second one occurs November to July 2012. That second one won’t be so much lucky as “telling,” perhaps hectic, certainly filled with determination. Make your move soon. Invest, commit, seek sexual intimacy, change your lifestyle. Thursday night to Saturday holds clues!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Tackle chores Sunday – be safe with tools, electricity. This eve to Tuesday afternoon brings happy, flirty, friendly relationships. Don’t be argumentative Monday. Though mid-week tempts you toward research, investments or sexual intimacy, or nudges you to make a commitment to a person or lifestyle, you’d be wise to wait. Your future will develop best if right now you are social, if you play, plan and dream. Rewards come from past efforts, not present ones. Gentle, mellow love and understanding, travel and legal success float in late Thursday night through Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Legal matters might slow now to June, particularly those involving work, health or machinery. So might far travel, religious projects and higher studies – in these, “revisit old haunts.” For instance, you’ll succeed in school if you resurrect an old project or study subjects you’ve studied before. Sunday afternoon to Tuesday brings work and health concerns. The weeks ahead reward ambition, so plunge into tasks. Relationships can be irksome midweek. Be diplomatic; don’t push your own agenda. Secrets, depths, sexual attractions and finances – all luckily – fill Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead beneficially emphasize higher learning, legal affairs, far travel, cultural involvements/rituals and gentle love. Sleep in Sunday morning. This eve to Tuesday brings romantic situations, pleasure and beauty, passion and risk. Your creative juices flow. Gambling, however, might hurt your bank account. Reject investments for now. (Until June, new investments are ill advised. Stick with those already in the works.) Work and health issues arrive late Tuesday through Thursday. Good and bad luck are mixed, so just plod ahead. Relationships excite, reward Friday/Saturday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The month ahead emphasizes romance, creativity and speculative luck. Until June, you stand on the edge of momentous events, prospects and opportunities. You might marry. For the best luck, relocate, negotiate, seek agreements and contracts, interface with the public, grab opportunities, form business partnerships or alliances, or seek marriage. (Some Librans, bound in unhappiness, might divorce now. But this influence might also “cure” your marriage. Can you give it one more try?) Rest Sunday daytime. This eve to Tuesday, your energy and charisma soar. Money caution mid-week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your workload will increase now to June. Just plod through if you have no enthusiasm. But realize this work can be the entry hall to one or two major career or business opportunities, to arrive after May, into mid-2012. For the next six years, your money fortunes are on an extended rise! But it starts with work. Tamp down any domestic friction to late February: be gentle, kind. Pride wrecks love. Lie low, rest early week. Your energy surges back Tuesday night through Thursday. Thursday night to Saturday brings the first hint of your coming money luck. Get frequent rest these weeks. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Love, romance, creative projects, speculation, sports, risks, selfexpression, dealings with children – these meet great luck and opportunity now to June. The month ahead features talk, travel, curiosity – so get curious! Travel and casual conversations can – no, will – lead to good things, romance among them! Uphold your reputation early Sunday. This eve to Tuesday brings social delights, flirtations and wish fulfilment! Retreat, rest and contemplate future obstacles mid-week. Your energy and charisma climb Thursday night to Saturday – start projects, ask favours, see and be seen.

Jan. 23 - Jan. 20 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The weeks ahead emphasize money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, sensual attractions and memory. Accept surface appearances; they will tend to be true, and questioning will “sour the atmosphere.” Lots of money might come! But be self-disciplined: spending can get out of control. Now to June, you are powerfully favoured to purchase (and sell) real estate, to heal family issues, to find security, and to end limiting situations, projects and conditions. (You might see and chuck these luckily Friday/Saturday.) February is one of the best months to combine money and property. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar for the next few weeks. Start important projects, ask favours, seek permission, impress bosses, colleagues. Your determination and sex appeal (which are always linked) are unusually high now through February. Sunday morning has a mysterious cast, but this eve toTuesday brings wisdom, gentle love and understanding. Be ambitious midweek, but be diplomatic. You might push just because you have extra energy, but others could feel you’re abrasive. Wishes come true Friday/Saturday – expect social joys, entertainment, flirtation, happiness! Pisces Feb.19-March 20: Retreat for a while.Gather your energies and your thoughts. Rest, contemplate, let the world go by. Be charitable, spiritual. The few weeks ahead favour dealing with government, taxes, institutions and large corporations. Study a money plan, rework it until it’s perfect. Soon – by March at the latest – money will start flowing your way, perhaps a huge pile of money. Students could win scholarships, consultants might land a big client, etc. But now is preparation time. Avoid belligerent people, unsavoury places. Sunday to Tuesday is mysterious. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
