Bomb threat evacuates building 56th Street also closed during afternoon rush after Responsible Driver Program office receives call from man BY
JESSICA KERR

The bomb scare at a Tsawwassen office building Thursday afternoon turned out to be nothing but a threat. Delta police received a call just after 2 p.m. from an office in a building in the 1500block of 56th Street. The office had received a call from an unknown male claiming there was a bomb in the building, said Insp. Jamie Ewatski. A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said the call was directed at the Responsible Driver Program office. Several units responded to the area and the occupants of the three-storey office building, as well as a few surrounding homes and businesses, were evacuated. Two RCMP bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in from Port Coquitlam. Police also closed off 56th Street between 16th and 14th avenues for more than two hours as the threat was investigated. By about 5:30 p.m., after the dogs had searched the building, police determined there was no bomb and started allowing people back into the homes and buildings. Ewatski said there are no suspects at this time but the incident is still under investigation.

Police officers made several arrests Wednesday after executing a search warrant at a farm on 28th Avenue.
Police are releasing little information about a significant drug bust in South Delta earlier this week. The Delta police drug section executed a search warrant in the early morning hours Wednesday at two residences on a farm on 28th
Avenue just east of Highway 17. The Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team as well as the Vancouver police department’s emergency response team assisted local officers. A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said the extra manpower was required “due to the nature of the search
warrants and the potential for high risk.” “The properties have been contained and there is no danger to the public,” Eisenzimmer said. Officers seized undisclosed drugs and several arrests were See DRUG BUST page 3

Big spenders do best in by-election Paton tops polls and expenditure list as civic documents show the more a candidate spent, the better they did BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Campaign spending had a direct correlation to electoral success, documents released this week on last September’s Delta council by-election show. Financial disclosures filed by all eight candidates paint an interesting picture, showing the more money a candidate spent, the better their result at the polls. Ladner farmer Ian Paton, who won the Sept. 18 byelection with almost 34 per cent of the popular vote, had the biggest numbers in terms of contributions and expenses in the race to fill the seat left vacant by the sudden death of George Hawksworth last spring. Available for public viewing on Delta’s website, the documents show the electoral organization that backed Paton, the Delta Independent Voters’ Association, had $41,050 in contributions and $38,167 in expenses. The organization, which also supports Mayor Lois
Jackson as well as councillors Scott Hamilton and Robert Campbell, drew a lot of financial support from the agricultural sector. Some of the other big contributions came from Shato Holdings and Talisman Homes, which are behind the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club redevelopment ($3,000 in total), Alpha Aviation ($3,000), Highmark Homes ($2,000) and Westshore Terminals ($2,000). The group spent $7,618 on advertisements and $11,423 on signs. Some of the other big expenditures included research and polling ($9,800) and courier service and postage ($5,121). Sylvia Bishop, who came in second in the by-election with over 27 per cent of the vote, had the next biggest totals with $33,969 in contributions and $29,150 in expenses. She received numerous smaller donations, including $100 from MLA Vicki Huntington, while contributing $5,258 out of her own

Ian Paton, who topped the polls in last September’s Delta council by-election, was also at the top of the expenditure list, spending over $38,000 on his campaign. pocket. Her biggest contributors were local CUPE civic workers and CUPE BC, combining for over $7,000. Listed as a campaign organizer, CUPE BC also spent over $2,000 on Bishop’s campaign. Her
biggest expenses were over $5,000 in ads, almost $17,000 for signs and over $5,000 to paid staff. In third place in both the by-election and candidate spending was Maria DeVries, who had $20,718 in contributions and
$17,799 in expenses. Her biggest single contributor beside herself ($16,711) was Alpha Aviation ($2,000). Sandheep Pandher, who was fourth on both lists, had $14,025 in contributions and the same
in expenses. His biggest contributor was Rimple Pandher, who gave $10,000. Fifth-place finisher Amy Ghuman Sara had $8,650 in contributions and had $178 left over after expenses. Her biggest contributor was her husband, Vince, who gave $7,350. The only variance to the order of finish mirroring spending came with Peter Harms, who had the sixth highest expenditure total, but placed seventh in the by-election. He had $4,182 in contributions (he was the sole contributor to his campaign) and the same in expenses. Kathleen Higgins, who finished sixth last September, had $2,675 in contributions and $2,819 in expenses. Ray Robinson, who finished last in the by-election with less than one half of one per cent of the popular vote, had campaign contributions and expenses listed as zero. The next general municipal election is this November.
Politicians talking about a split from TransLink
Upset they’ve become a funding source for projects elsewhere, south of Fraser officials could form own entity BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
It might be time for the communities south of the Fraser River to consider splitting from TransLink and forming their own transit authority. That suggestion came up during Delta council’s discussion this week on TransLink’s funding proposals, which have drawn the ire of local politicians and bureaucrats who say they provide nothing for the community other than taking even more money out of taxpayers’ pockets. “This isn’t a plan, it’s a way to finance major construction projects, and bear in mind there’s no improvements for south of the Fraser,” said CAO George Harvie. “There is no hope on the horizon for TransLink to improve our bus service and
it’s very sad.” Harvie pointed out that in the last couple of months service hours in Delta and other communities south of the Fraser were trimmed. Metro Vancouver’s board of directors last December was to have voted on TransLink’s request to raise property taxes to fund the $1.4-billion SkyTrain line into Coquitlam, but provincial Transportation Minister Shirley Bond granted an extension. The Evergreen Line is part of two options TransLink put forward for the regional district to consider, but both rely on increasing property taxes, which drew an immediate negative response from mayors. “The mayors’ committee has not approved any money from property taxes. There must be a better formula,” said Mayor Lois

ongoing, Eisenzimmer said, and still in its early stages. The accused were later released with pending court dates.

to bother exploring transit financing models around the world that appear to be successful. According to Delta staff, one of the TransLink packages would result in an average property tax increase of $36, while
“It’s obvious to the other city administrators the south of the Fraser is being used to finance the debt of the north,” said Harvie. He said communities in the south might have enough in place to start their own transit system,
which could be integrated to TransLink. Jackson agreed, saying TransLink could then focus on its own territory in the north. Harvie said it’s especially frustrating that TransLink immediately dismisses the notion of light rail south of the Fraser River. Coun. Bruce McDonald, who sits on the South Fraser Community Rail Task Force, said it doesn’t make sense why the transportation authority doesn’t want to even look at reusing the old interurban line, which was discontinued for passengers in the early 1950s, even though no costly property expropriations would be required. “In my view, the TransLink board is so Vancouver and Burnaby/ New Westminster-centric that everything they do is focused there. Surrey is
Micaela Robinson, who owns Loranda Farms where the raid took place, said through her lawyer this week that she was not involved in what took place at the farm. “I further understand that
neither the farm nor Ms. Robinson were involved in any way in the police action or any investigation,” stated a letter from her lawyer, Robert J. Baylis. An unrelated investigation is ongoing at the same
property as Delta animal control is investigating an “aggressive dog incident” after two people were attacked late last year. “The dog was removed right away,” Sarah Lowe, manager of the Delta

actually putting the interurban line in their official community plan but they (TransLink) are ignoring it,” he said. Coun. Anne Peterson received concurrence for her suggestion governments in the south need to band together for a coordinated voice on transit issues. In a letter to the mayors last November, TransLink board chair Dale Parker noted the recommended funding option for a supplemental increase would add over 425,000 hours of annual transit service to bus routes. Parker stated the South of the Fraser region would receive half of the additional bus service hours. A Delta staff report, though, found TransLink is not planning any major changes to transit networks in Delta as it expects minimal future development. Community Animal Shelter, told the Optimist this week. The dog, a Cane Corso, a breed of mastiff, did not live on the farm but was being taken care of there. Lowe said that incident is still under investigation.

Uncertain times lie ahead Delta Arts Council carrying on but not in usual municipal facilities BY
TOM ZILLICH
Optimist contributor
The Delta Arts Council is moving out of Tsawwassen Arts Centre and moving into a period of uncertainty. Keys to the centre will be given back to the Corporation of Delta, which intends to keep it as an artsfocused facility. Control of Firehall Centre for the Arts and ArtSpace buildings in North Delta will also be handed over by the arts council, which is stretched financially and has been pressured by the municipality to get its act together. On Jan. 11, after a series of meetings, proposals and counterproposals, civic authorities asked the arts council to “voluntarily release” its control of the municipality-owned Firehall Centre for the Arts, Tsawwassen Arts Centre and space at Ladner Pioneer Library by March 31. A civic offer to lease ArtSpace was rejected as too expensive Tuesday during a special meeting of arts council members. The move means the arts council is

Raccoon loses its tail after getting shock on Annacis
A raccoon is recovering after suffering quite a shock on Annacis Island last week. The animal was electrocuted after climbing up the transformer tower at 820 Dock Rd., said Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. communications co-ordinator Yolanda Brooks. “As well as putting out the power at WWL Vehicle Services, the animal lost its tail before plummeting to the ground,” she said in an
e-mail to the Optimist. Staff from the automotive warehousing and distribution company saw the injured raccoon and called the B.C. SPCA. It notified the wildlife rescue association, which rescues and rehabilitates thousands of wild animals every year. Following surgery to remove the rest of its tail, the raccoon is recovering and rehab staff have high hopes for its survival, Brooks said.

With about $36,000 in the bank, the arts council must now decide what to do with its assets in those facilities, including light and sound equipment, musical instruments, furniture and more. The board says it will continue to sponsor or run events and it has first right of refusal for bookings in the facilities it has used for the last 10 years. Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department will open the door to other local arts groups to be involved in programming at the facilities, director Ken Kuntz said Wednesday. “It’ll take a few weeks to get us organized during the transition period,” he said, “but the main point is these buildings will remain focused on the arts.”

Delta police officers and staff joined thousands across the province Wednesday morning to participate in the Great British Columbia Shake Out earthquake drill. “Chief [Jim] Cessford is a strong believer in emergency preparedness and quickly agreed to participate,” said A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer. “It is an opportunity for our staff to examine their work spaces and prepare themselves. It is also a great opportunity to remind everyone that disasters do happen and that failing to plan is planning to fail.”
MLA’s efforts prompt government to make budget more accessible Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said this week she is pleased her efforts to have MLAs receive fair and equitable access to the government budget lock-up appear to have been successful. “For some time I have wanted MLAs to have access to the regular budget lock-up,” Huntington said. “It now appears the government will adopt a more cooperative and constructive approach to budget day processes.” On budget day, the media and various environmental, business, social and cultural organizations are invited to attend a 9 a.m. budget “lock-up” where they receive detailed briefings and can ask questions of the finance minister and min-
istry officials. Information presented at the lock-up cannot be released until the minister delivers his afternoon budget speech to the legislative assembly. Traditionally, the government has excluded opposition MLAs and their staff from the lock-up, which Huntington criticizes as unreasonable and disrespectful. “Last year, my staffer (accompanied by a professional accountant) was told to arrive at 12 noon. They were escorted into an empty office, given a cell phone and told to call if they had questions.” “I was not a happy camper,” said the independent MLA, who then discovered the Official Opposition finance critic was tradition-
ally treated in the same manner. “It made no sense to exclude my staff when the media and public are receiving detailed briefings. And it is disrespectful of the role and responsibilities of an elected representative of the people.” Huntington said the government has re-considered the issue and while not yet confirmed, is looking at two processes: (a) allowing MLA staff to attend the main budget lock-up and (b) providing MLAs a separate lock-up with Ministry of Finance staff. “I am pleased that Minister (Colin) Hansen agreed with my intervention and has moved to right a wrong,” Huntington said. “The minister has taken a

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW It’s disheartening to see what the elimination of gaming grants is doing to the Delta Arts Council. A leader in the promotion of the arts in Delta for more than four decades, the group is experiencing what could politely be termed as a rough patch. With funding drying up, it’s been forced to cut programs and staff over the last couple of years and is now losing control of the civic-owned buildings it has long managed. That’s a far cry from a decade ago when things were much rosier in these parts. Delta had used money provided by port expansion to buy an old church and, thanks to the efforts of the arts council, turned the 56th Street building into the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. It became a hub of cultural activity as the umbrella organization played host to performances, exhibits, classes, camps and much more. For a stretch there, it seemed like I was in constant contact with longtime arts council staffer Patti McGregor, who always had a show or a program to let the community know about. Patti was often apologetic for the profusion of press releases, but it gave a sense the place was really hopping. That, unfortunately, isn’t the case anymore, another victim of the provincial Liberal government’s decision to slash the flow of gaming revenues to the very non-profits that helped Victoria sell the public on the idea of expanded gambling. The elimination of that funding source created a downward spiral that has prevented the arts council from meeting its obligations to the Corporation of Delta, which has decided to take back control of civic-owned buildings, including the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Whether Delta is another bad guy in this ordeal depends on your perspective, but it’s clear the tipping point came when the province decided it needed the gaming revenue more than the non-profit groups. Victoria contends that money is now going to necessities like health and education, and it’s hard to argue with that, but I can’t help feel these grassroots organizations were used as pawns in the expansion of gambling. Delta’s arts community is expansive and vibrant, and the arts council is but one group in that landscape, so this integral part of any society will continue to have a strong presence here. I’m hopeful the umbrella organization that brought many disciplines together over the years and has done so much to further the arts in this municipality emerges from this troubled time to build on what is an impressive track record.
Integral part of the economy, trucks still draw ire of many MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT A fine community committee wrapped up its work recently. Last month saw the final meeting of the Deltaport Community Liaison Committee. The committee was struck some three years ago to monitor the Delta Third Berth construction and its first year of operations. Working with Port Metro Vancouver, the committee addressed several major issues that arose during the building of the third berth. Lighting, noise, environmental impact and truck traffic were all part of a broad and complex discussion. Representatives from the municipality, the Tsawwassen First Nation and from the community at large all came together in an attempt to mitigate damage to our community. You may have noticed truck traffic has been less daunting in our neck of the woods over the past year or so. Monitoring of com-
mercial only lanes and highway truck parking have paid off to some degree. It wasn’t that long ago trucks going to or returning from Deltaport would stack up three abreast at the intersection of highways 10 and 17. The committee has been responsible for many of the improvements we see today. Still, trucks are a huge issue in our community. People in Delta, more than any other municipality in B.C., hate trucks. This is because we see way too many of them. Our geographical location will ensure we will continue to see lots of them as our region grows. “It is incredible that so many urban communities that are wholly dependent upon trucking to deliver the consumer goods and necessities of life can be so decidedly antitruck.” So said Canadian Trucking Alliance president David Bradley in a speech in Washington, D.C. this past Monday to a group of academics studying freight movement in urban areas. While we may dislike trucks, they are not going away, unfortunately. Until such a time that logistics afford opportunity for Safeway and London Drugs to receive on the graveyard shift, the majority of truck traffic will occur in the day in urban areas. In Delta, things are a little more

complex. Traffic to and from the port and the Tsawwassen ferry terminal make our local driving a little more challenging than in other communities. The Delta police and the Corporation of Delta are in favour of examining how to take more trucks off the road through a pilot project for “truck trains.” These vehicles are configured to carry two 40-foot containers. In a Hudd Transportation report for Maersk Distribution, it is noted that Hudd has the best safety record of all Maersk distributors in North America. Utilizing the modern truck train configuration would take 24 round trips from Tilbury to Deltaport off the road each day. This amounts to over 6,000 round trips a year. Conversion to truck trains will cut approximately 554 tons of CO2 emissions, according to the Hudd report. For us locals, I guess it comes down to choice. You have to balance the idea of less trucks and less emissions with the idea of having to pass or wait on a double length truck. Politicians and planners will need to further investigate how to best live with trucks. Until we stop buying and selling stuff, they are here to stay as a critical backbone to our economy.

Editor: Re: Course takes pains to be quiet, letter to the editor, Jan. 22 I can’t believe what I’m reading: Kyle German of Point Roberts Golf and Country Club claims his leaf blowers and mowers, which he says measure from 81 to 94 db, are not “noisy” and “intrusive.” Well, I don’t measure German’s equipment with noise meters, but I can tell you they wake me — and others — early and then they prevent me from getting back to sleep, which is “noisy” and “intrusive” in anybody’s books, unless he’s deaf. What’s more, since German tells us his machines measure from 81 to 94 db and he doesn’t find this level of noise to be “noisy” or “intrusive,” we can conclude his antiquated
equipment has left him in need of hearing aids. Why? Extended noise at 80 db and higher causes hearing loss. German slyly cites the 140 db of aircraft at 100 feet in his effort to discredit Don Sabo’s complaints, but Sabo is correct. Why? Because aircraft pass over, taking their noise with them; however, Point Roberts Golf & Country Club’s machines drone on and on and on, hour after hour, morning and afternoon, ruining many fine spring, summer and fall days. German, if he’s the golf course manager he claims to be, knows there’s equipment out there that’s 90 per cent quieter and far more efficient than the “modified” (his word) junk he’s using. Why is it the Tsawwassen
Golf and Country Club can maintain its course without generating the noise complaints the Point Roberts course has received over the years? Point Roberts and Whatcom County need Delta and all that it does and can provide in times of need, but Delta doesn’t need the Point — and it certainly doesn’t need German and his unholy noise. If the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club were the “best” neighbour German pretends it to be, it would buy quiet machines instead of continuing to rely on the modified junk somebody failed to design properly during the last century. This neighbourhood was blessed with quiet until the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club set up operation. Greg J. Edwards
Red light runners could find permanent home at corner
Editor: As a police officer who lives in Tsawwassen, I have absolutely seen my share of traffic deaths — the vast majority of which are speed related. I drive down 8A Avenue onto 56th Street on an almost daily basis. While
waiting for the light to go green, I have come to expect someone will blow the red light heading northbound through the intersection. A red light camera there is overdue. To the people running that red light at a high rate
of speed, I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the Boundary Bay Cemetery at that location. That is where you can tell your loved ones to come and visit you, because your clock is ticking and you just don’t know it. Doug Spencer
Cops need to keep their anger in check
Editor: Two incidents before the courts last week regarding police use of force are rather alarming. In the first case, Cop A calls Cop B a “fag.” Cop B takes offence and attempts to retaliate against Cop A, but instead assaults, and severely injures, Cop C, who attempted to interfere. The judge scolds the cops involved and dismisses the assault charge. So we now have a homophobe and a man who is unable to restrain his aggression when given
a minor insult allowed to “keep the peace” armed with a baton, a Taser and a gun, and protected by the Police Act. I feel safer already. In the second case, a drunken, and quite possibly racist, off-duty cop assaults an unarmed, harmless, innocent, middle-aged citizen for no reason. In his defence, Kelly Keith, a use of force instructor states this offduty cop used “reasonable force” and also that his actions were “consistent with his training.”
It appears the almost weekly reports of citizens being assaulted, or even killed, by cops is not really their fault. They were just acting according to their training. It’s even more alarming that our judiciary, the police chiefs or the police union make no mention of anger management training courses or the like before these armed, and dangerous, idiots are allowed to continue their rampage and inappropriate behaviour in our communities. Primaries don’t look so bad
Editor: Re: The NDP Election Machine, Raeside cartoon, Jan. 22 Quite aside from the dubious last-minute dumping of separate bags of membership forms and $10 bills into the somewhat bedraggled “NDP Election Machine,” we are watching and learning from the exemplary way party leadership conventions are being conducted both provincially and federally ... democracy Canadian-style. After all, bulk peddling political party memberships at $10 a piece to children, non-citizens, dead people and the occasional canine seems a vastly more practical shortcut to the desired political result than undergoing the grueling, time-consuming and, yes, expensive scrutiny of the leadership primaries of our much-maligned neighbours to the south, designed to give as much democracy as is deemed possible to local politics in the process of electing political party leaders. Union doesn’t like schools to be ranked
Editor: Re: Teachers campaign against tests, Jan. 22 There is really just one reason for the ongoing controversy over the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA). It is that the teachers’ union is opposed to the use — by any organization or individual — of any schoollevel student assessment results to publicly rate schools. My reading of the 13year history of the FSA
and the public statements and actions of union officials during this period supports this suggestion. Why does the union object to this use of student assessment results? It does so because such ratings enable anyone to compare schools on a student performance measure that might be construed to reflect on the effectiveness of its union members. There is, therefore, one critical question to be asked and debated before
any action is taken regarding the FSA: As a society, do we believe the public should be able to compare schools that are funded by taxpayers on the basis of student performance data? I believe the teachers’ union would answer in the negative, but if it were to surprise me, then we need a thorough public discussion of this question. Peter Cowley Director of School Performance Studies The Fraser Institute
School should be forgiving of students’ past actions Editor: To forgive and forget ... in all my years, I have heard these words over and over. This is part of what keeps us healthy by letting go of past mistakes. It allows us to forgive ourselves and to move forward when someone else forgives and forgets. It’s a clean slate, so to speak. As parents and teachers, we tell our kids and
students to “let it go” and to “forgive and forget.” But are we able to forget? A young child may not be able to and this is understandable. A child’s mind isn’t on the same level as an adult. Why then, as teachers and principals, can they not abide by their own words? Is it fair to punish a child today for something that occurred six months ago? It is apparent that to forgive and forget is not something understood in the school system. Where does the line end and where does it begin? When does a child get that clean slate back? Do they
ever? It seems that at Hawthorne Elementary they never get it back. When a child does wrong, when are they forgiven? Are they ever forgiven? Has your child ever been denied an activity for something they did in the past, six months or longer? If so, how did this make you feel? Did you think the school had moved on, that it was able to forgive and forget? Were you just as shocked as your child was to find out they weren’t allowed to “X” because they did “Y” five months ago? I sure was. Angie Thomas

Editor: Re: Arts council to lose pair of homes, Jan. 26 I am totally devastated, deeply disheartened and disgusted regarding the ultimatum that the Corporation of Delta has given the artists from the Delta Arts Council. I wonder at the legality of the actions. After volunteering con-
sistently for over six years at the library gift shop (in spite of a recent stroke followed by a brain hemorrhage that I had the day after volunteering, by the way), our little shop will be closed down by March 31. I have sold and displayed my photographic art at the Ladner Pioneer Library and at the Tsawwassen Arts
Centre, and have performed there and on DCTV’s Spotlight. Where do I go now and what do I do with all my surplus inventory? As there is no grant money available, there will be no more galleries, open mics, open stages, theatre and other artistic events either after the spring. It is obvious the
Corporation of Delta has no use for the artists who want to sell, perform and display their work in this community and that they have no desire to help non-profits either. I will remember this come election time. Rosemarie Hurst

Eliza Olson deserving of national recognition
Editor: Re: ‘Bog Lady’ helping push change, Jan. 26 Congratulations to Eliza Olson for being a well-deserved finalist in Canada’s Champions of Change. Olson has done a tremendous amount for Delta’s natural heritage by advocating so strongly and for so long for the protection of Burns Bog. Not only did she and her group spearhead the drive for the bog’s
purchase and subsequent protection as an ecological conservancy area, but she has also achieved a sustained level of public interest and education about the incredible ecological benefits of bogs in general. I hope now that she has achieved this national recognition, the provincial government will wake up to its shared responsibility in conserving Delta’s wildlife habitats. Anne Murray

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Sunday, Jan. 16 and Sunday, Jan. 23: Tsawwassen • January 16, 10 p.m., 1100-block of Shaman Crescent: Complainant indicated that sometime overnight someone stole her locked vehicle from her driveway. A set of keys is missing and could possibly have been left in the car. The vehicle is valued at $15,000. • January 16, 9 p.m., 1500-block of Beach Grove Road: Complainant reported he had parked his vehicles in his garage. When he returned he found the garage door open and both vehicles had been ransacked and several items valued at $500 were stolen. Complainant was unsure if he had locked the garage. • January 17, 9:04 a.m., 5200-block of St. Andrews Place: Complainant left her vehicle in her driveway and sometime overnight someone had entered the vehicle and stole her wallet, keys and cell phone. No damage to vehicle, which may have
been left unlocked. • January 20, 12:43 p.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: A customer, known to the staff, entered a store,
selected three items and approached the till. He concealed one of the items under his jacket and only paid for the other two. The store manager later examined the video surveillance that revealed the theft. The police were contacted and the customer was identified. Police located the suspect at his residence where he was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court. Ladner • January 16, 11:56 p.m., 4800-block of Elliott Street: A customer at a store entered and left without making a purchase. A review of the video surveillance showed the customer concealing a $27 item in his pants. He is a regular customer. The police were notified. Still under investigation. • January 16, 4:30 p.m., 8200-block of River Road:
Complainant left the business locked and secure yet when he returned the next morning he found the gate open. Several tools and loose cable valued at $11,170 were stolen. Damage to the gate is $300. • January 17, 3:47 a.m., 7900-block of 80th Street: During a routine stop police found the driver not to have a driver’s licence or insurance. Further investigation found the suspect to have been in possession of break and enter tools in the past. Tools and pistol ammunition located in the vehicle were seized. The suspect was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court. • January 21, 6:25 p.m., 5100-block of Heron Bay Close: Complainant reported he was a victim of fraud. The suspects were able to access his online banking account and had transferred out $18,000. The credit union will forward the file to its securities division for investigation. Complainant’s account numbers were changed and he was advised not use his online account until his computer has been investigated.

indulgence and image are immense. What we need in such circumstances is an alternate message and support system that can guide and encourage us to live a better way. The apostle Paul advised the people of his day, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world.” He encouraged them rather to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” which he noted could only be achieved by submitting ourselves to Christ as our personal trainer and following God’s design for a truly fulfilling way of life. It often involves, as the poet Robert Frost noted, taking “the road less travelled.” So come follow Jesus who modelled how losing some things is the only way to find the kind of life worth living.

Each year Delta Council is faced with the challenge of balancing the needs of Delta residents, maintaining services in light of increasing costs and economic conditions, and keeping property taxes at a reasonable level. Council has an ongoing objective to find effective, efficient and economical ways to deliver quality services to residents and businesses. The proposed 2011 overall tax increase is 2.98%. This represents a 2.48% increase for general municipal services and a 0.5% increase for enhanced Police and Fire services. 2011 Expenditure Budget $250 Million - Where Dollars Are Spent

When the reality game show debuted in November 2004, one would have thought that in a success oriented culture, an invitation to become “The Biggest Loser” wouldn’t have much of an appeal. But when faced with the fact that overconsumption is literally killing them, many people come to see a radical commitment to follow a personal trainer and submit to their weight loss regiment as the opportunity of a lifetime. The irony is, of course, that we are immersed in a culture that encourages indulging ourselves on one hand (e.g. food, fashion, fun, fantasy vacations, etc.) while idolizing results that come primarily by learning to resist such temptations and impulses. The pressures to give in to convenience,

So far, Friesen said, the event has raised more than $5,200, with pledges still trickling in. It was part of Delta Gymnastics Kids 1st campaign that was launched last year to help raise money to help cover the remainder of the construction costs and outfit the new facility with equipment. So far, about $330,000 of the $850,000 needed has been raised.

Delta Gymnastics raised some money and had some fun with a special event last weekend. On Sunday, the group hosted the Sports Showdown Challenge, which pitted teams against one another to not only raise money for Delta Gymnastics’ new home, which is currently under construction in Ladner and slated for completion this spring, but to complete eight physical challenges set up throughout the current facility in Tsawwassen. “It was awesome,” said Delta Gymnastics executive director Mark Friesen. Eight teams participated, including one each from the Delta fire and police departments, the Corporation of Delta, Delta Gymnastics, Delta school board and others from the community. The challenges ranged from the physically strenuous to those that required simple co-ordination to some that were just plain fun. The Delta Gymnastics
Funny Bunnie was brought into the shelter because he wandered into a home in North Delta looking for food and affection! He is amazingly well behaved and very clean. He would make a great house rabbit as he is calm, clean and loves to be held. His favorite activity will be sitting on your lap, getting brushed while you watch TV together… just not Cesar Millan please – maybe Bugs Bunny instead! He is neutered and ready for his forever home!

Delta Secondary Grade 12 student Amy Zell (left), pictured here with classmate Michelle Stevens, said classes tried to sabotage each other in the Jar Wars fundraiser.
Each penny was worth a point, while higher valued coins, such as nickels (minus-5), dimes (minus10) and quarters (minus25), counted in the negative. The classes were trying to sabotage each other by stuffing as many higher value coins as possible in
the other jars, said Grade 12 student Amy Zell. The contest wrapped up Friday. Proceeds will go to a Nicaraguan school project being undertaken by the high school’s International Friendship Association. The winning class will get a pizza party.

Zen and the art of acting Industry veteran to lead local workshop DAVE WILLIS
F
ilm and TV industry veteran Greg Webb will be running an acting workshop beginning next week in Ladner. The weekly workshop is titled Zen and the Art of Acting. “It’s going to be a really fun, cool way to spend a few hours four Sundays in February. At the end of it you’ll have something you can use regardless of whether you’re trying to make a career out of this or just trying to get a little less stress, a little more fun into your life,” says Webb, who recently moved to Ladner and currently teaches at the New Image Film Conservatory in Vancouver. He says the sessions will include simple exercises and that “the vast majority of our time together will be spent up and playing.” Webb, who’s originally from Tennessee and had lived and worked in Los Angeles for 20 years, has experience acting, voice
acting and directing. “The best part about being an actor is what happens to you while you’re trying to add to your resume. This pursuit of sophisticated adult play is something I got hooked on fairly early on,” he says. Webb has starred opposite Johnny Cash in the TV movie The Baron and the Kid, worked with Bill Paxton in the 1983 film The Lords of Discipline and with Jennifer Tilly in an early ‘80s TV series. His more recent work includes roles in TV shows Fringe, Smallville, Chaos and True Justice, a Steven Seagal project. “I’ve aged into some category where actually I’m going out for stuff more
“
now than any time since probably my mid-20s,” he says. Zen and the Art of Acting will run Sundays from Feb. 6 to 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Open Space Yoga in Ladner Village. “It’s for working actors but it’s also for anybody interested in figuring out how to creatively and successfully bring more of themselves to whatever it is they’re doing.” The workshop costs $200 if paid before Feb. 6 or $250 at the door. Call 778-919-8667 or send an e-mail to worldwidewebb11@gmail. com to register.

Lara West’s work will be on display at the Tsawwassen Library.
Lara West will make her debut with an upcoming exhibit of paintings at the Tsawwassen Library. “It’s a little nerve wracking, putting yourself out there, but having sold a few gives me a bit of a boost,” she says. “Hopefully it does well.” West, who lives in Tsawwassen, began painting earnestly in 2009 and has already sold about 16 pieces after putting some on display at MudBay Wines, where she works part-time.
“It’s a really good outlet and doesn’t take a lot of time. I’m a single mom. I paint in my kitchen in between the cooking and cleaning,” she says with a laugh. She’ll have about 20 acrylic paintings at the show “if they’ll all fit.” Most are of hearts and dragonflies. “I’m hoping to branch out into something else eventually,” she says. “But the dragonflies sell like crazy, so...” Most of the dragonfly paintings include positive sayings written in Japanese
kanji. “(Dragonflies) represent, from a lot of cultures, change and renewal and growth,” West says. She likes working in acrylics because of the vibrant colours, quick drying time and “if you make a mistake, you can just paint over top.” West’s show at the Tsawwassen Library runs from Feb. 1 to March 6. She’ll be there on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. After the show her works will go back to MudBay Wines in Tsawwassen and White Rock.

Exercises to train your core at home p.j. wren
Well on Your Way Try these challenging exercises to work your abdominals as well as the glutes, hamstrings and the low back muscles. They’ll also work your shoulders, triceps and upper back muscles. Phew ... that’s quite the workout, and all you need is your body weight and a chair. Now, there’s no more excuses Delta, get training! 1. Straight arm plank with taps
with your wrists directly underneath your shoulders. * Draw you body into a nice long line. Your hips should not be creeping up instead, the hips, shoulders and feet should all be lined up. * Engage the core to maintain this position and tap out with the left leg and touch the ground. Bring the leg back up onto the chair and tap out with the other leg. * Perform 15-20 times, each leg. Tip: If this is too painful for the wrists, perform the exercise with push-up bars or with your hands on top of hexagon hand weights. This will keep your wrists in a neutral position.
2. Side Plank with Twist * Position your feet one in front of the other, and your bottom arm right under your shoulder. * Keep your hips stacked and in a straight line with your feet and shoulders. * Extend the top arm straight up, so it is in one line with the shoulder. (see pic 2a) * Using the obliques (waist muscles), twist the upper body down and towards the ground rotating the arm under you. (see pic 2b) Really reach that bottom arm under and around your torso. * Perform 10-15 repetitions on one side and turn over
Picture 1 * Place your feet on top of a sturdy chair, digging your toes into the chair,

hold the last one up for 30 seconds. Tip: This is an excellent exercise for people with low back and knee problems. 4. Reverse Plank Press-Ups * Lying face up, place both heels on
Picture 3 and perform again. Tip: If your upper back is tight, this exercise will also provide you with a nice stretch. 3. Bridges * Lie on your back with the bottoms of your shoes resting on the outer lip of the chair. * With your arms extended straight above your shoulders, drive your hips as high as you can, using your glutes and hamstrings. (see pic 3) * Perform 20-25 reps and then

top of the chair and your hands directly under your shoulders, fingertips pointing towards the chair. * Using your hamstrings and glutes, press the hips up as high as you can — aim for parallel to the ground, though you may not get there on the first few times. (see pic 4a) * Allow the bum to drop a few inches and then press up again. (see pic 4b) * Aim for 1215 reps. Tip: This exercise is more challenging than it looks. Really engage the hamstrings by digging the heels into the chair to help lift your body up. JANE CASSIE
Postmedia News
e’re on Highway 1, just west of Revelstoke, and everything’s white — the road ahead, the shoulders beside, my husband’s knuckles. Kamikaze flakes hit the windshield like hailing fusillade, then spiral chaotically into a tunneling vortex. Though we’re creeping ever so slowly, it feels like we’re flying faster than Alice did down the rabbit hole. “What some people will do for a little powder,” I say to Brent, who is the driving force behind this Kootenay ski trip. “OK, lots of powder!” I re-clarify, after hearing the record snowfall. My mountain man is psyched about the slopes. I, on the other hand, would be happy hanging around the hot tub. Eighty centimetres in the past three days is more than my quads can handle. Although Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the newest kid on North America’s ski block, this four-year-old has already earned brownie badges — highest liftserviced vertical, only village to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing, one-stop shopping,
greatest annual snowfall. And there’s more. Eventually, they’ll have a total of 20 chairs and over 100 runs. Golf greens will drape the valley floor. Hotels, housing and retail will hug up to a pedestrian village. And the activity-packed hamlet of Revelstoke will forever remain at its doorstep. World class? That’s what they’re aiming for. There’s a definite buzz about the pending development, and with this three-day snowfall, the hype has escalated. “It’s been years since we’ve had dump like this,” the check-in receptionist says, excitedly. “And they’re calling for another 10 overnight.” Even more reason to cozy-up in the posh Nelsen Lodge, I think to myself. Gleaming granite, sleek slate, polished wood — Nels Nelsen, the 1920s record-holding ski jumper and lodge’s namesake, would be proud. We settle into our chic suite and make use of the chef-envy kitchen, spa-style bath and heavenly bed. Just steps away are the fitness room, 24/7 latte lounge and that soothing hot tub. I could easily stay cocooned here for the entire stay.

“Check out the gondola,” Brent says, with kid-like glee. An outdoor centre, retail and the nosh Rockford Wok|Bar|Grill snuggle together on the lodge’s lower level, and steps away, hoarding the limelight, is the eight-passenger speedster that will whisk us skyward. The Stoker quad that links to the top of this escalator will take us higher — to a heavenly 2,225 metres, where the Monashees and Selkirks are just about touchable. The Ripper, another fast foursome, ascends 500 vertical metres
in another direction to service more powder junkies. My head spins. Flurries fall. And the fear factor sets in. “I’ll go,” I finally agree to Brent, “but not without a lesson.” The following morning, Nitzan Nzuella comes to the rescue. The Israel-born expert with level four credentials has skied in more places than I’ve visited. “I’ll gear the lesson totally to your ability,” she says, assuredly, from this highest summit. “This mountain’s so big, you’ll be blown away.”
Although not totally comforted by these words, it’s clear. Like others who work in this wonderland, she’s pumped. Countless downhill options fan out before us from this picturesque plateau: Evergreen glades, challenging chutes, barren bowels. All are cloaked in an epic dump and, like today’s lift lines, are uncluttered, serene. “Just lean forward and bend your knees,” she explains, when sensing my apprehension about the thigh-deep cloaking. “And, tense your core.” Easy for her to say. But to my surprise, after following Nzuella’s lead, I don’t need an escape route. The untracked terrain is lighter than goose down and thanks to her tips, I rediscover that familiar bobbing rhythm. Over the next two days, we scroll down cruisers like Critical Path and Chopper, claim yee-haws on Snow Rodeo and Wooly Bully, and ease onto that cat track whenever our thighs burn out. When it’s time to refuel, Mackenzie Outpost and Mid Mountain Lodge are just a glide away. And soothing my well-used quads at the end of each day is that inviting hot tub.

Discover how Tsawwassen, Point Roberts and Boundary Bay came into existence and the history of many ongoing “hot spots” of controversy, including the Roberts Bank back-up lands and the Treaty of Oregon. A guided tour of the exhibit, followed by an illustrated talk by local natural historian Anne Murray, will be offered at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10. The lecture will focus on the geographical, ecological and historical changes that have taken place in Tsawwassen and South Delta since the days of the early European explorers. This talk will feature both archival photographs and present day photographs by David Blevins. Tickets cost $5 and space is limited, so if you are interested in attending, call 604946-9322 to register.

South Delta’s rich heritage can be spotted by driving down the palm tree-lined 56th Street that now identifies South Delta as a thriving destination for tourists, retirees and young families. But have you ever wondered how this beautiful spot evolved from a quiet farming community? Or how the Tsawwassen ferry terminal became a fixture in provincial and national travel? The community of South Delta is home not only to the ferry terminal, but also the Roberts Bank superport, English Bluff and beautiful Boundary Bay. The Delta Museum & Archives Society’s newest exhibit, titled Border, Bay and Beach: Always in the Headlines, offers a historical perspective of growth and change in this economically, culturally and ecologically rich region.

Before we knew it, it was fall and time for our Halloween Party, we all laughed till we cried at some of the antics of the pets, a lot of people had incredible costumes both for them and their dogs, but not every one wears a costume. The pets seem to really enjoy being the center of attention on Santa’s knee and the parents faces just beam as they watch their beloved pets. Hard to say who enjoys it more. Brenda was on Global TV talking about gift ideas for pets, the big hit this year was Catnip Bubbles for cats and K9 water bottle for dogs. Wonder what this year will bring.

Goalie headed out on ‘trip of a lifetime’ Ladner’s Tommy Mulka going to Quebec in February for international peewee hockey tournament BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Ladner’s Tommy Mulka is looking forward “to a trip of a lifetime.” The 11-year-old goalie will be heading to La belle province for the Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament with the Burnaby Winter Club ‘AAA’ Bruins next month. “It’s great to be able to go there and wear the BWC jersey,” he said. The team’s first game is against a club from Detroit. A victory means they’d move on to play either a team from Ontario or Russia. Besides Canada, the U.S. and Russia, there are teams from Slovakia, Finland and Switzerland in the Bruins’ grouping.

Tommy Mulka
The tournament, held at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City from February 10 to 20, attracts teams from 16 countries and around 2,300 players, its website states. Since it was founded in 1960, past NHLers such as Brad Park, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Eric Lindros have taken part. Mulka wasn’t expecting to get the chance to go to Quebec at the start of the season. Originally playing for a single ‘A’ team at the winter club, Mulka only recently joined the ‘AAA’ group. “Around Christmas time, one of the goalies

Needless to say that was a pretty good Christmas present. Part of it was, guess what, you’re going to Quebec City.” Tommy said he was surprised about being picked to move up. “I was really happy. pen,” he said. He’s not going in with expectations of seeing plenty of game action however. “If they want him to play, he’ll play and if they don’t that’s fine too,” said John, who’s going to Quebec as a chaperone. Cultural trips are planned for the players as well. Tommy spent two years with South Delta Minor playing house hockey before joining the winter club.
The Delta Ice Hawks are entering the last few weeks of the regular season locked in a tight race for first overall with the Richmond Sockeyes. One date in particular is looming large for the crossriver rivals. On Feb. 15 the teams play each other at the Ladner Leisure Centre in what could be a pivotal match up to determine first place in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference. As of press time Richmond, sitting at 65 points, had a one-point lead over Delta with both teams
having played the same number of games. (The Ice Hawks visited the Ridge Meadows Flames yesterday after the Optimist’s deadline). The Ice Hawks and Sockeyes last met a little

Delta grinded out a 3-1 victory in what was arguably their biggest win of the season at that point. The trio of John Proctor, Mitch Pacey and Anthony Brito, who each measure 6-foot-4, led the way for the Ice Hawks with plenty of bodychecking in
that meeting. On Tuesday Delta beat the North Delta Devils 3-2 on home ice. Pacey scored early in the third period for the Ice Hawks to break a 2-2 deadlock. Delta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with markers from Aaron Merrick and Cody Fidgett only to have the Devils tie things up with a pair of goals in the second. Former Ice Hawk Marco Finucci scored on a penalty shot and also had an assist for North Delta. Doug Birks turned aside 22 shots for the win. The Ice Hawks next home game is against Squamish next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The South Delta PeeWee Chiefs finished second at a tournament in Kamloops last weekend.
The South Delta PeeWee Chiefs came away from the Kamloops PeeWee Recreational Tournament with a second place finish last weekend. In the finals South Delta lost 5-3 against Langley. Through the first and second periods, the Chiefs had built a 3-0 lead before a strong comeback from the Langley squad. The boys fought hard to come back but simply ran out of time and proudly
brought home the sliver medal. In round robin action South Delta lost their opening game 4-1 to the same Langley team but went on to win the next three games, which included a couple of shutouts. The tournament had 12 teams from the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland take part. The Chiefs are coached by Paul Skujins, Rod Vaughan and Dave Jackson
and are managed by Sean McMillan. They have a strong group of forwards and defence and solid goaltending. The team is comprised of the following players: Nolan McLeod, Mathew Lowe, Jack McMillan, Iver Jackson, Mathew Thompson, Joshua Vaughan, Wes Hacklander, Kirt Hacklander, Liam Swayze, Taylor Goundrey, Dylan Skujins, Jackson Skujins and Nick Worsnop.
Beautifully crafted new home right in the heart of charming Ladner. Over 2,500 SF of luxury living space featuring 4 large bedrooms + den w/frosted sliding doors, 3 bathrooms, 2 gas fireplaces, functional designer kitchen w/stainless steel appliance package including side-by-side fridge, gas stove & dishwasher, side-by-side washer & dryer. Elegant finishings including crown mouldings, premium laminate & tile flooring, granite counters & modern fixtures. Double garage, stone patio & large fenced yard add to the long list of features. He leaves behind his wife Penney McClure, son David Smith (Ivana and sons Kevin, Eric & David), daughter Lisa Susan Smith, sister Aileen Munns (Bill), brothers Ted Smith (Pauline) & Paul Smith (Jean), his special “sister” Eleanor Carmichael (Bert), his nieces Celina Larocque (Ray) & Valerie Pino (Dave), and all of his nieces, nephews, great nieces great nephews, and dear friends. Cancer June 21-July 22: Sunday/Monday highlight the problem (2010-2012) in a crucial relationship. You see another in terms of security, but they might see you as “fighting” their ambition. You’ll see clues to solving it Saturday. The solution has something to do with understanding, affection, and with secrets/ research, finances, sexual yearnings, commitment, intuition and dreams. Those secrets, finances, sexuality, et al, are emphasized midweek – they’re a source of ambition, success. If you can’t solve the relationship problem, you might “thoroughly” end the bond, now or later. Decide what’s best. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Chores and health issues arise Sunday/Monday – with problems attached. Solutions to these problems occur Friday/Saturday – the answer might lie deeper, in diagnosis, even surgery. (Metaphorically, too – i.e., cutting out a wasteful or “work-causing” situation.) Relationships confront you mid-week: exciting meetings, challenges and opportunities. You could meet your match in love! That’s important now, as January to June luckily support weddings, love (and far travel, legal solutions, publishing and intellectual pursuits). Depths, secrets, intimacy and funding go well Friday/ Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Romance could hit a snag Sunday/Monday – it probably involves money or possessions – or difficulty “possessing” someone. For you, now to late 2012, romance and sensuality are firmly fused – study whether this will be a problem or a blessing. Creativity and speculation could face the same two-year snag, so be cautious with risk. Chores and health – the main themes of these few weeks – become important midweek. A new work project could begin. Work and health are tied strongly – and mostly beneficially – to finances, investments, research and sex. These four are lucky now to June.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: You have to recognize a basic truth: between now and October 2012, all your efforts to advance in the world (via career, marriage, business, carving out the land, etc.) will be either helped or opposed by another (or others). You will have to form a partnership of interests – your ambition, their security. Be warned: this/these others are hard-headed, skeptical, want proof, not sweet persuasion. So, give proof – of your loyalty, reliability, skills. Sunday/Monday point this out. If you meet a barrier, re-read this. By Saturday, the “right path” appears. Social joys midweek! Taurus April 20-May 20: Love, law, learning and travel – all are a little rocky Sunday/Monday. Be patient – solutions arrive in a small way Monday eve through Tuesday morning, and in a big way Friday/ Saturday. What does the solution look like? Ambition and hard work. Higher-ups, bosses and parents, judges and VIPs are impatient and temperamental to late February, so tread lightly, show good humour, don’t be querulous (especially Friday morning!). Your ambitions can be very successful this week, especially Tuesday eve onward, if you’re eager. Good friends, flirts and social delights arrive late week! Gemini May 21-June 20: Take care with investments, debt, sexual urges, deep health, surgery, commitments and “secrets” Sunday/Monday. If you must handle something in these zones, do so Monday eve through Tuesday morning. Avoid a legal fight all month; but if you’re in one, it intensifies mid-January to late February. Despite the trauma, litigation might solve a problem and make a wish come true! Stability, hope and anger are your allies. The same period might bring gentle love with a hotheaded, idealistic person – intimacy moves toward destiny. Tuesday to Friday emphasizes these themes. Grab opportunities.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: I’ve mentioned several times over recent years, and will this whole decade, that domestic, property and security changes loom. These are emphasized this year and next, and might, during this time, present a) a puzzle to you, or b) a deeply experienced opportunity. This Sunday/Monday holds a problem or critical choice here – one that moves smoothly forward Tuesday, and meets a solution late week. (The solution involves work or health.) Now to June, relocation, new partnerships are lucky. Romance, creativity and risk lure you midweek, and could be the doorway to new partnership! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You will generally say what you mean Sunday eve – but this day and Monday can raise a barrier to communication that has been around for a year and will last to late next year. It could simply be that communications become burdensome (e.g., more emails – or IT glitches at your job) or, that gossip is a problem factor. You can set up or initiate a long-lasting communications solution Friday/Saturday, one that enhances both your career and security. Home, family, property concerns – February’s main focus – flow well late Tuesday to Thursday. Romance, pleasure, beauty late week! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Both a money opening/opportunity and a money barrier arise Sunday/Monday. This “duo” exist now into October 2012 (and have, for awhile). During the entire phase, take care with expenses, spending, investing. The problem factor seems to involve wishes, or popularity or enjoyment – too much of these for your bank account, maybe? Mild money luck enters Thursday, for a month, and a solution to past and present money dilemmas is available late week. Casual friends, siblings, communications, errands, paperwork, curiosity fill midweek. They “are” the money solution, here forward.

Jan. 30 - Feb. 5 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise strongly Sunday to Tuesday midday – get out, ask favours, start important projects. If your project is monetary (or sensual) continue it through Thursday, as many “good starts” are available! Even Friday/Saturday continue to help – especially with money attached to career, property, and/or personal skills. Mid-January through February brings: a) the end of a money source, and/or b) the seeding of a new one, or c) money connected to property. Much can flow to you – don’t let it flow past/ away – save! Friends, errands, late week. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18: Rest, lie low, contemplate Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. You might spy a problem with communications, travel, intellectual, cultural or legal affairs Sunday/Monday. Keep the faith, because the rest of this week, especially Wednesday and Saturday, could brew the solution. (The solution lies in your own personality, your willingness to step forward and say, “This is me! And this is what I can do!” And that tendency, self-promotion, is highest and most successful this midweek, Tuesday-Thursday, and this month, February.) Chase money or spend (used items great) Friday/Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your optimism and social desires rise Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. But you’re in an overall “recuperation mode” until Feb. 18, so don’t expect a lot. Be contemplative, restful, and gently private all week – especially Tuesday to Thursday, when weariness increases. (Great government, spiritual and health links midweek also.) You might notice a long-term problem (to October 2012) Monday, involving intimacy, sexuality, commitment, or focusing on your net worth, investments, debt. These dilemmas approach solutions Wednesday night and Saturday – or at least, show you how to “be safe.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
