Adoption offers pouring in Animal shelter fielding plenty of inquiries for dogs found abandoned in Delta park BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

It shouldn’t be hard for the Delta Community Animal Shelter to find new homes for the seven dogs found abandoned last Friday in a local park. Manager Sarah Lowe said the shelter has received more than 30 e-mails from people interested in taking one of the dogs. The poodle crosses were found

at Dow Park, which is located at River and Huston roads in the Tilbury industrial area not far from the 80th Street shelter. Someone who was passing by the unused park and saw the frightened dogs reported the incident to the shelter. The dogs were in bad shape when they were brought in. Their white fur was dirty, matted and stained, their teeth were “horrible,” and they were scared and

malnourished, Lowe said. The animal shelter believes the dogs, which range in age from around four months to about four years, were bred and lived in cages before being left in the park. None had been spayed or neutered. “They seem just like puppy mill puppies,” she said. The dogs are all currently receiving treatment for various issues (one had an infection in its

uterus) and learning to be around people and other dogs. “The dogs are exceptionally shy and obviously not socialized,” Lowe said. She said the shelter is hoping to place the dogs soon and staff will be going through all the applications to find suitable homes. “These guys are special needs,” she said, adding they will need a relaxed home and owners with the time to devote to them.

The husband of the woman whose burned body was found along Deltaport Way in 2006 was found guilty of her murder yesterday. Former Surrey teacher Mukhtiar Panghali Singh was found guilty of murdering his wife and then burning her body to conceal evidence of the crime. The second-degree murder conviction carries a life Mukhtiar sentence but Panghali Singh the court has yet to determine his parole eligibility. Panghali did not display much emotion as Justice Heather Holmes announced the verdict in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, after delivering a synopsis of her 57-page judgment. Relatives of the victim, 31year-old Manjit Panghali, erupted in tears and exclamations of “it’s over.” Manjit Panghali was a Surrey school teacher, as was her husband. She was four months pregnant when she was strangled to death in October 2006. The couple had a three-year-old daughter at the time of Manjit’s death. The verdict came almost two months after a four-week, judgeonly trial, during which the Crown contended Panghali tried to cover up the crime.

Firefighters battle for B.C. curling crown in Tsawwassen PHOTOS BY

CHUNG CHOW

The 53rd annual B.C. Firefighters Curling Championships are being held this weekend at the Tunnel Town Curling Club in Tsawwassen. Opening ceremonies took place Thursday morning when Delta fire chief Dan Copeland (above right), who has never curled, threw the ceremonial first rock. Thirty-five teams from across the province lined the ice for ceremonies (right) before action got underway that featured Colwood skip Dale Kulyk (above foreground) and Darcy Taylor’s lead Mike Lynan (above background). The event wraps up tomorrow at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

Shaw eyes cell tower for Tsaw.

Communications giant approaches church about erecting structure at corner of 56th Street and 6th Avenue BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Shaw Communications has approached a Tsawwassen church about installing a cellphone tower on its grounds. A concerned resident recently informed the Optimist of the proposal for a tower at Benediction Lutheran Church at the corner of 56th Street and 6th Avenue. The proposal was confirmed by a church secretary, who also pointed out a decision by the church hasn’t been made. Cellphone towers usually draw their fair share of controversy, including this month when residents in a North Vancouver neighbourhood made it loud and clear they were opposed to a proposed 40-metre tower by Rogers Communications.

Delta community planning director Tom Leathem said there’s little a municipality can do to stop the installation of a tower as long as it meets the code requirements of a building permit application. “Beyond that it’s all governed by the CRTC across Canada. They set out the guidelines which suggest they consult with neighbours about the impact, but there’s no obligation to get permits over and above building permits by the municipality,” said Leathem. “We really don’t have any veto power ... I understand they (Shaw) have been looking for sites throughout the Lower Mainland in an attempt to move into the phone market and complete their grid.” Leathem said one criteria

Delta and other municipalities had been recommending is having co-location of towers, where new cell antennas can be added to existing towers. Calgary-based Shaw Communications announced last year it plans to launch a cellphone network. In 2008, Shaw spent $189 million on 18 wireless licenses covering mostly Western Canada. According to Health Canada, the radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic energy cell towers emit is at a much lower level than holding a cellphone. As far as cellphone exposure, Health Canada notes: “The weight of evidence from animal, cell culture and human studies does not indicate that the energy emitted by cellphones is strong enough to cause serious health effects.”

exposures respect the limits set in Health Canada’s guidelines, Health Canada has determined that there is no scientific reason to consider base stations dangerous to the public.” In Parliament last fall, Vancouver East NDP MP Libby Davies said the standing committee on health issued a report recommending the government research the longterm health effects of exposure to FILE PHOTO radiation from the The placement of cellphone towers is towers, particularly often a sticky subject. the effects on children. When it comes to base She also called on the stations, the public health government to immediagency states: “As long as

ately put rules in place that require telecom companies to consult and seek the approval of the community and local municipalities before towers are installed in residential neighbourhoods. Meanwhile, the issue of cell towers on farmland was recently raised at Delta council. Saying he’s frustrated about Delta’s lack of ability to regulate their location, Coun. Ian Paton said he was offered significant dollars by a company to install a cellphone tower on his farm but he turned it down. Councillors agreed to urge the Agricultural Land Commission to demand cellphone towers be grouped in specified locations so they don’t take up too much valuable farmland.

T2 moving to front burner Port expects new terminal will be needed at Roberts Bank within decade BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Terminal 2 will likely be built and operating at Roberts Bank in less than a decade. The scenario moved a big step closer to reality with this week’s announcement by Port Metro Vancouver that it’s launching what it calls the Container Capacity Improvement Program. It’s a long-term strategy focusing on increasing containerhandling capacity at Lower Mainland ports, with special emphasis on investment and infrastructure improvements at Roberts Bank. “This is the start of a long-term program that we see Terminal 2 being an integral part of. If you look at where we are, we had that great recession over the last couple of years and now see a very strong rebound to the extent where we are already back to record volumes,” president and CEO Robin Silvester said in an interview. “What we are saying is that this is just the path that we had always been talking about, steady growth in

Port Metro Vancouver says a new terminal is needed to handle a projected increase in containers. trade for Canada and steady growth in requirement for container capacity.” Last year the port authority opened a third berth at the Deltaport container terminal at Roberts Bank. The project increased capacity by approximately 400,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and added 20 hectares of container storage. An entirely new threeberth facility, T2, is anticipated to have a capacity of approximately two million TEUs. It’s a project that’s been talked about for several years. The port authority has already issued a request for proposals to companies willing to partner with on the project, although there

was no firm timeline when an application would be submitted to government. In an interview with the Optimist last year, Silvester said the initial plan was to have T2 up and running by 2016, but that had been pushed back to 2020. The new capacity program, a combination of technical studies and environmental reviews, will most likely see that date realized, he confirmed this week. He said the program would also include “a thorough community consultation process.” Local group Against Port Expansion (APE) said this week it’s firmly opposed to any further container development at Roberts

Bank that will result in the destruction of one of the most important wetlands on the west coast of North America. The group again also questioned the need to build T2, noting the increased capacity at Deltaport combined with the port at Prince Rupert are just two factors that negate the need for additional capacity. “With the container volume growth experienced by Port Metro Vancouver in 2010, they only handled the same volume of containers as in 2007,” stated Roger Emsley, APE’s executive director. “Even if Port Metro Vancouver manages a steady annual growth of say five per cent, which could be lower with possible losses for ships diverting via the Suez and Panama canals straight to East Coast ports, then by the year 2020 Port Metro Vancouver may still handle less than four million TEUs annually,” Emsley said. Silvester, however, said local ports would require new capacity, possibly as early as 2017. “This is very much about building capacity in line with requirements and doing the proper planning,” he said.

Deltaport, as well as other Lower Mainland ports, could be facing a work stoppage, a prospect that is already hampering business. Greg Vurdela, spokesperson for the B.C. Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), said this week that a “significant percentage” of cargo is already being diverted to U.S. harbours. “The heightened uncertainty is [Canada’s] AsiaPacific gateway has left customers with no choice,” he said. “Unfortunately, cargo is now being offloaded at U.S. ports. The diversion started several weeks ago.” Mediated talks between BCMEA and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada are scheduled to take place until Feb. 12, however, workers have already taken a strike vote and ballots to authorize job action are being counted. The union would have to serve 72-hour strike notice to legally shut down all of B.C.’s major ports, including Deltaport. Vurdela estimated the cost of a strike would be $100 million per day. “It is a very, very big deal,” he said. “If a work stoppage happens, the Asia-Pacific gateway would cease to operate. It would be devastating for the country’s economic recovery.” Both inbound and outbound shipments are

already being diverted from B.C. ports, with 30 to 40 per cent of inbound cargo now headed for the U.S. Negotiations between the two sides are at a critical stage, Vurdela said. A 21-day cooling off period is set to expire Feb. 6. The contracts for two bargaining units from the longshoreman’s union, which involve about 4,800 workers, expired last March. “At present, the sides are not close,” he said. “We expect the longshoremen will get a mandate to strike from their membership.” Talks are scheduled to resume on Monday. “Bargaining is progressing,” said union president Tom Dufresne. “We remain ever hopeful.” The union is pushing for the right to negotiate with employers instead of foreign shipping lines. About 100 longshoremen gathered Wednesday in front of the downtown offices of the Evergreen Shipping Agency to protest a proposal to take unionized first-aid attendants off foreign ships in port. Union vice-president Steve Nasby said the employers association is trying to get rid of the first-aid positions. “We are just trying to let the shipping lines know that interfering with our collective agreement is not on,” he said. “[First aid is] the most important person in the job.” With files from the Province

Blaze causes extensive damage to Tsaw. home BY

The fire that caused extensive damage to a Tsawwassen home earlier this week is not believed to be suspicious, according to the Delta fire department.

Flames broke out just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday at a two-storey home in the 5300-block of 5B Avenue. There was one person home at the time and they made it out safely. Firefighters were on scene well into the after-

Delta firefighters spent several hours Thursday morning battling a large industrial fire. The fire broke out at a sawmill at River Road and Nordel Way around 2 a.m. The mill was operating at the time and two workers were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. By about 8 a.m., fire chief Dan Copeland said the fire was contained and crews were remaining on scene to extinguish any hot spots. Five fire trucks and 30 firefighters were called out to the three-alarm blaze. River Road remained closed between Nordel Way and Centre Street for several hours. The road closure wreaked havoc on the morning commute as traffic on Nordel Way was backed up all the way to Scott Road.

Local screenwriter places in top 10 in Coppola’s contest Dan Southard’s entry picked out of more than 2,400 submissions Dan Southard’s submission ended up in the top 10 out of more than 2,400 entries in the 2010 American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest. Southard, a realtor who lives in Tsawwassen, said he was surprised to finish that high. “I thought I’d send it in, expecting nothing would happen. I certainly didn’t think I’d come close to placing at the top,” he said. The contest was judged by Francis Ford Coppola

it’s the “first time I’ve ever put one out there,” Southard said. American Zoetrope’s website states the winner and top-10 finalists would be considered for representation by a number of agencies and their “scripts will be considered for film option and development by leading production companies.” Southard said he doesn’t think there’s much of a chance for his screenplay to be made into a movie. “I don’t know anything about this business and I can only imagine there’s

thousands of people trying to sell scripts and get movies made,” he said. “If someone wanted to buy it, I’d be really surprised.” The aim of the contest is to “seek out and encourage compelling film narratives, and to introduce the next generation of great screenwriters to today’s leading production companies and agencies,” American Zoetrope’s website states. Southard is a former chairperson of Ladner Pioneer May Days and is also a Community Comment contributor for the Optimist.

Musician needs votes to win ‘dream’ scholarship DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Ladner’s Trevor Stobbe is hoping to win a full ride scholarship to his “dream music school” in California. The guitarist is in a contest where online voting determines who moves on to the next round in a bid for scholarships to the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Stobbe, who has been playing guitar for four years, mainly plays on his own but does perform every other week in a band at his church. “I just enjoy it because it’s the only thing that I can really feel totally at home, at peace playing, not thinking about anything else going on, just in the moment, right there,” the 20-year-old said. Stobbe has been getting great support online and is sitting in second place as of

a full scholarship and third place gets a 50 per cent credit against tuition. The Musicians Institute bills itself as “a world leader in contemporary music education” with “dynamic curriculum.” If you’d like to vote, or to watch a video of an original song by Stobbe, visit fullride.sonicbids.com.

MURPHY’S LAW Will it actually happen this time? Talk of revitalizing Ladner Harbour has been ongoing for decades, yet what could be the piece de resistance of a quaint village has remained an underutilized, and often unsightly, feature that’s been kept far from the limelight. Most places that are fortunate enough to be situated on a body of water take advantage of that location but Ladner Village’s vibrant core is found primarily to the south of the harbour, not on its banks. There are a few businesses and the occasional activity at the harbour, but it’s essentially the opposite of how most waterfront communities are configured. In Ladner, the bulk of the shopping, dining and public activities are inland, the water within reach but not necessarily playing much of a role in the ambience or enjoyment of the area. In contrast, neighbours like Steveston and White Rock use their prime waterfront locations as focal points to draw thousands of shoppers and diners, locals and visitors alike. Over the years this anomaly has been discussed, debated and dissected, yet Ladner Harbour remains an afterthought for most people. The current effort by municipal hall appears to be as likely to result in positive change as any in recent memory, so perhaps we’ll finally see something happen there. I have to agree with a consultant’s report compiled for the municipality that concluded the two civic-owned sites along Chisholm Street are critical pieces if the waterfront is to be revitalized. Delta needs to show leadership in this regard by not only offering long-term leases on the Seven Seas and BrackmanKer properties, but also providing the chosen developers with some latitude on the zoning so they can construct enticing, and financially viable, buildings. The creation of additional dining, shopping, housing and entertainment options will act as a much-needed catalyst, making the waterfront far more of a people-friendly environment than it is today. Breathing life into the area will also prompt others to invest, creating a snowball effect that can’t help but be beneficial. Ironically, the village is already a happening place, one that has a multitude of unique shops and is host to a variety of well-attended special events, including the wildly popular summertime market, so adding some vibrancy to the waterfront would nicely complement what merchants have created here. It’s about time the harbour caught up to the rest of Ladner Village.

It’s worth having conversation on alternatives to TransLink NATHALIE HEIBERGHARRISON

COMMUNITY COMMENT It’s a tricky situation, this relationship we have with TransLink. They want more of our money and we want more services, yet ridership levels are low in South Delta and there isn’t expected to be more development, which would bring more transit users, in the foreseeable future. So our municipal council, in a state of frustration, is looking at other options. Kudos to civic politicians for thinking outside of the box, even if they haven’t quite hit the nail on the head yet. The idea: If communities south of the Fraser River got together, gathered their own resources and formed their own transit system, then TransLink could focus on the north, where it spends all our money anyway, and we could do things the way we want. With the

Volunteers deserving of better civic treatment

Editor: I am a director of the Delta Arts Council, having assumed that position a little over one year ago in the midst of some very difficult circumstances the group was confronting. I speak for myself here, but I am very disturbed about the treatment of the arts council by the Corporation of Delta. The arts council is being treated like something Delta can hardly wait to get out of the way. A Delta staff person, I guess preparing for the takeover of our buildings by Delta, seems to think she can have unfettered access to our facilities (they remain “our” facilities at the moment), posting signs at access points, running rampant through the facilities taking photographs (ostensibly in some misguided effort to “do an inventory”), all without as much as any notice to the arts council. I have had the experience, as a volunteer, of

being treated rudely by Delta before. It needs to stop. I would suggest there is significant potential for the community to become restive over all of this — and, frankly, I hope it does. Personally, I believe this inappropriate treatment of a group of volunteers that has devoted significant time to address a difficult situation — and the treatment of volunteers in the community frequently on other occasions and with other organizations — should become an election issue. What is going on is clearly and simply rude and inappropriate. The volunteers associated with the arts council should be treated with respect. The circumstances should, as well, be the subject of honest discussion and negotiation with the Corporation of Delta, not the uninformed, one-sided process that has transpired so far. We’re volunteers, for gosh sake, and, particularly

in this situation, we serve at significant personal cost. I challenge Delta council to do something about this. It could start with a meeting between councillors and directors of the arts council — without Delta support staff present. Mayor Lois Jackson rode into power a few years ago on a platform of challenging a council that she said was arrogant and unresponsive to what the community wanted. I didn’t necessarily agree with her at the time, but her position got her a long way. I think we have the same scenario before us again, now. Perhaps we will see a new political “movement” spawned in Delta, saying much the same as Jackson said way back then, ready and eager for the next municipal election campaign. I am getting a little sick of what I am watching and being subjected to — and I know I am not alone. Firth Bateman

Simultaneous red lights create dangerous situation for drivers

Editor: Red light cameras can catch offenders in the act but safety cannot be effected in arrears. I believe the main reason drivers run lights is because the opportunity presents itself when all directions show red simultaneously. I remember when “four-way red” was introduced in Montreal: taxis and buses used the opportunity to get the jump on the rest of the traffic, but not for long before it

became the norm for all. Whatever safety benefit was expected never materialized. However, intersections can be easily made safer. For example: in Britain and Germany four-way red is not used. Instead, the yellow light is not only used to warn of change to red, it also precedes the green light. Like so many solutions, its simplicity is so obvious either we overlooked it or were afraid to implement

something not used south of the border. Because there is no chance of beating the light, drivers aren’t enticed to cheat. Additionally, a miniature version of the traffic lights is set at eye level, meaning the driver doesn’t need to crank his neck to find the light or stare into the sun trying to obey an overhead light. Not only are those intersections safer, traffic moves more efficiently. Curt Brown

Money for overpass by airport better spent at busy intersection of highways 10 & 17 Editor: Did you know the Corporation of Delta is planning to build an overpass on 80th Street over the railway tracks for more convenient access to Boundary Bay Airport? I drive over the railway tracks on 80th Street everyday to and from work and it’s a rare occasion when I am delayed by a train. I

would be surprised if the total number of vehicles delayed by trains in an entire day was more than a couple of hundred on this small local access road. Meanwhile, a few kilometres to the west is a much larger traffic problem that is being overlooked. The intersection of highways 10 and 17 is a fairly major intersection with a

much larger volume of traffic than 80th Street. I think there are more vehicles delayed there every few minutes than there are in an entire day on 80th Street. The money being wasted on 80th Street would be better spent putting in an overpass at highways 10 at 17. Glen McGarrigle

A10 The Delta Optimist February 5, 2011 Letters to the Editor

Combo vehicles have impeccable safety record Editor: Re: MLA needs convincing on safety of combo vehicles, letter to the editor, Jan. 22 I am pleased to respond to the concerns Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington expressed in her recent letter about the safety of long combination vehicles (LCVs) used in urban areas and on two-lane roads. I want to assure Huntington and Delta residents that LCVs have been operating safely on two-lane urban streets and roads in other jurisdictions,

such as Alberta, since the late 1960s. LCVs have been doing the same thing in B.C. (Burnaby, Kamloops and Dawson Creek) for about 10 years without a single incident or complaint. Urban LCV operations are common because they are unavoidable. It is impossible to efficiently transport goods between terminals or to meet the needs of shippers whose warehouses, factories and retail outlets normally reside within city limits without using local two-lane roads.

Many Alberta LCVs operating in urban areas are twin 53-foot trailers with overall lengths of up to 40 metres, far in excess of Maersk’s proposed LCV lengths in Delta. An impartial Alberta study of LCV operations in that province between 1999 and 2005 concluded that straight trucks and standard tractor-trailers were five times and twice as likely, respectively, to be in crashes as LCVs. Passenger vehicles were three times more likely to be involved in a crash than an LCV.

These outstanding results don’t include the safety benefit of the hundreds of thousands of truck trips eliminated by allowing LCVs to be used. Maersk’s proposal should reduce truck trips in Delta by 6,000 annually. Trial runs have been undertaken to assess the safety of the equipment at Deltaport and on the proposed route. I haven’t seen the permit conditions that will apply to Maersk’s operations simply because they haven’t been issued pending construction of

improvements, funded by Maersk, to the intersection at Huston and River roads. I am, however, confident the permit conditions will be the same as or similar to those tried and true conditions that have led to stellar LVC safety elsewhere. I’m not sure why Huntington is interested in Maersk’s “detailed maintenance schedule” but Maersk’s local trucking operation has the best safety record of all its North American business units and, at the time the application was made to the

Corporation of Delta, had experienced 850 days without an at-fault crash. In closing, the two levels of government (Delta and the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure), as well as the Delta police department, have reviewed the application, evaluated the route and deemed the proposed operation worthy of testing. This level of scrutiny is welcome. Paul R. Landry President & CEO B.C. Trucking Association

Huntington AGM set for next week Editor: My son asked me a question over breakfast this morning. “Dad, what’s a politician?” I answered quickly, “Well, Vicki Huntington is a politician. She represents our interests in the legislature.” He seemed satisfied with my answer, finished his breakfast and got ready to go to school. I thought further. I thought about a million people rallying in Egypt. I thought about participating in democracy. I thought about this wonderful country, province, region and town. I gave silent thanks that I was blessed to live in such a wonderful place. And I thought of those that give of themselves for the greater good. But a politician needs support and input from

those they represent. Believing that Vicki Huntington is the best choice for Delta South, I supported her campaign. I brought my entire family. My children walked the walk, carried signs and learned about the election process. We attended the legislature together to see government at work. You, the people, have an opportunity to participate in democracy, an opportunity that is denied to millions around the world. The annual general meeting of the Vicki Huntington Constituency Association will be held next Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Ladner United Church Hall, 4960-48th Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Billy Mitchell President Vicki Huntington Delta South Constituency Association

Responding to other comments in the article, TransLink absolutely supports keeping light rail as a “live” option for rapid transit expansion in the South of Fraser and we are among those calling for the old Interurban corridor to be preserved. One aspect of current and future transit services for the South of Fraser that must be considered is the importance of having an integrated system, and ours is envied around the world. Delta provides an excellent example. Even though the new Canada Line was built in Richmond and Vancouver, residents of South Surrey, White Rock and Delta are prime benefi-

ciaries, given the number of them who regularly use it. Delta has more bus service thanks to the Canada Line because instead of 255 trips per day all the way to downtown Vancouver, the #601, #602, #603 and #604 now deliver 309 daily round trips to the Bridgeport Station. In fact, because most Delta commuters leave their home municipality each day, they share the benefits of thousands of road and transit improvements TransLink has made along major routes in other parts of Metro Vancouver since 1999. These improvements continue today as TransLink addresses the efficiency of transit services. While it is true that some under-used routes will be trimmed in Delta and other areas, our intention wherever possible is to reinvest those savings to improve other routes in the same part of the region. Details will be released shortly on substantial improvements for some South of Fraser routes as a result of this process. Since TransLink took on responsibility for Metro Vancouver’s transit system and the funding of its major arterial road network, great efforts have been made to meet tremendously diverse needs. There are big challenges in collectively setting region-wide priorities and resolving the difficult issues of how to fund operations and expansion. All that being said, we remain focused on the imperative to continue building-up services in the South of Fraser and the entire region up to the levels they should be. Ken Hardie TransLink

Council on Regional Transportation, which has final approval on our plans and funding. It is timely that the mayors and the province have a memorandum of understanding that opens the way for discussions on new sources of transportation funding. Contrary to one assertion in your article, TransLink has reviewed financing models around the world. But when we released that information in 2009, the Optimist’s sister paper headlined it as “28 ways TransLink can pick your pocket” — not exactly the thoughtful dialogue needed on such an important issue.

Editor: Re: Politicians talking about a split from TransLink, Jan. 29 There are some facts and background we’d like to offer concerning the important points raised about Delta’s transit services. TransLink agrees with community leaders and transit customers across the South of Fraser that the region is underserved by transit. We recognized this when we were formed in 1999 and, from 2005 to 2009 when funding was finally in place to expand, TransLink increased transit service in all of Metro Vancouver by 25 per cent, increasing and modernizing the bus, rail and ferry fleets and providing more service on more routes. The South of Fraser received half of that growth (capacity for about 30 million more rides per year) with significant service increases on key routes, including the Fraser Highway, King George Boulevard and connecting South Surrey, White Rock and Delta to the new Canada Line. Still, we recognize there is more needed to meet current needs, not to mention future demand in the fastest growing part of the region. Half of the expansion we proposed in a new 10-year plan from 2011 to 2019 would have been dedicated to the South of Fraser, and it would have made a significant difference to the quality of services available. However, all of TransLink’s sources of revenue to pay for that expansion were either at their legal limit or, particularly for property taxes, not acceptable to the Mayors’

Rose expert Brad Jalbert is coming to Ladner later this month. The Evergreen Garden Club will welcome Jalbert, who owns Select Roses, a farm-style nursery/greenhouse in Langley, as a guest speaker at the group’s meeting on Feb. 15. “We’re excited to bring him out because he’s such an expert on roses,” said garden club president Kristin Crouch. Jalbert will be doing a pruning demonstration as well as displaying images of his latest roses at the meeting. The expert, a former Vancouver Rose Society president, has been hybridizing roses since 1990. He recently had a rose named after country music artist Loretta Lynn. Sony presented Lynn with the rich apricot-coloured floribunda to celebrate the release of a tribute album. Jalbert is also the coauthor of two books, Roses for British Columbia and Roses for Washington and Oregon. Crouch said there are roses suitable for every type of garden — large or small. Book sale nets KinVillage over $8,000

The KinVillage Community Centre’s sixth annual book sale was a big success, said Alan Hunt, coordinator of the event. “I think the donations of books and media support were the best ever,” he said. More than 17,000 items were received with $8,350 taken in over the three-day event. “This was a good increase from last year,” said Hunt. The money is designated to go to the care home for building improvements.

Books were donated by hundreds of individuals, the United and Anglican churches in Tsawwassen and a school in Richmond that had been closed. “It was a very generous community response,” Hunt said. The success of the event would not have been possible without the help of 12 volunteers who spent days sorting and pricing the books and the 20-plus volunteers who worked throughout the sale, said

Hunt. “Apart from KinVillage volunteers and staff, we received invaluable help from TOOBs and former colleagues in the book business. We sold all we could in the time and we are certainly grateful for the tremendous community support.” Some leftover books were retained at the community centre for sale during the next few months while others were sent to other organizations.

God’s gentle whisper. There was this moment in time when the Old Testament prophet Elijah tried to get away from God only to discover that he couldn’t. This is what the Bible says: “A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was NOT in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was NOT in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was NOT in the fire. And after the fire came a GENTLE WHISPER.” 1 Kings 19:11,12 (emphasis mine) Yes, a whisper. Let’s be sure that we’re not so plugged in that we’ve tuned God and his wonderful creation out.

The majority of us, it seems, are plugged in to one kind of media device or another. On my morning runs I often encounter people plugged in to their iPhones or iPods. On occasion, when I’m running in the same direction, those I’m about to pass do not even hear me approaching. I’ve personally made the choice not to run plugged in at all. I love to listen to the sounds of nature — eagles, red-winged blackbirds and, the odd time, an owl. At other times I simply love the sound of silence. Silence is so important for our emotional/spiritual health. Silence allows personal thoughts to flow. It helps us to listen to ourselves. It also allows us to listen for and listen to

Renowned artists’ work in Tsa.

T

wo internationally-recognized Lower Mainland artists are presenting their recent work at the Tsawwassen Longhouse Gallery beginning next Wednesday in a show titled Black, White and Colours. Born half a world apart, Ladner’s Margaret Elliot in England’s fabled Lake District and Burnaby’s Eileen Siu-Yue Fong in China, they met for the first time as members of the South Delta Artists’ Guild, when each applied for exhibition space at the guild’s longhouse gallery, and decided to present a joint show. Both artists are influenced by their love of nature and the place of man in that world, and informed by their national backgrounds plus decades of Canadian experience. Fong immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1968, graduated from the B.C. Institute of Technology and subsequently had a career in medical technology. In 1994 she began studying traditional brush painting with several Chinese masters, building on her natural talent, and since then has achieved an impressive history of exhibitions, awards, teaching experience and volunteer involvement. She is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and is very involved in the arts community, serving on the Burnaby Arts Council, the Burnaby Artwalk Committee and the Artists Among Us project. In 2005, she founded the Aurora Gallery Artists’ Co-op in Vancouver and recently illustrated The Dream Jar children’s book. Her paintings, executed with the discipline, skill and imagination of traditional Chinese brush painting, take the viewer into a colourful

world of gardens, birds and animals and landscapes of water and mountains. Elliot’s life began on a family farm and inn in Cumbria and that rural background has influenced much of her work. She had early training in art at Durham University in the U.K. before switching to science. Like Fong, she also has had a career in medical technology, including eight years in California before moving to Vancouver in 1975. Pursuing an art career at the same time, she joined the Federation of Canadian Artists and in 2007 achieved full signature status as a senior member. In a federation membership of approximately 2,000, about 60 have reached this standard and are entitled to put the initials SFCA after their names. She has also met signature standards of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Northwest Watercolour Society. Her paintings included in this show are an intriguing mix of drawing, watercolour, gouache and ink techniques, which invite the viewer into worlds of mysterious ruins, quiet country scenes, mountain landscapes and ghostly ship images inspired by the 2002 Tall Ships visit to Steveston. Black, White and Colours opens Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Tsawwassen Longhouse Gallery, next to the South Delta Recreation Centre. A reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. Their show and sale of over 50 paintings runs Wednesdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until it closes at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20.

Literary haunts in Edinburgh BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

“Literary Edinburgh is to ‘wurrdaholics’ what Scotch whisky is to alcoholics,” says our guide Angus, his blue eyes twinkling, “T’is intoxicating and addictive!” An observation that would have likely been echoed by the literary giants who lived and worked in Scotland’s most invigorating city. It has been said that Edinburgh is as much “a character” as it is a city. It looks out at the world with eyes that have seen days of joy and nights of passion. Its face has been weathered with time and experience. It has carried on its shoulders the weight of its people’s history and traditions. Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, J.M. Barrie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, all lived here and drew their inspiration from the bustle of the streets, the men who drank ale at the taverns, the adventurers who tarried here for a season, the women who inspired them, and the villains who skulked in the dark corners of the city’s byways. It has captured the imagination of contemporary novelists too — Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus hounds criminals who lurk in the murky depths of the city, Alexander McCall’s characters inhabit 44 Scotland Street and the personalities that enliven his Sunday Philosophy Club series are all part of Edinburgh’s city scene. Although J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter tales aren’t set in Edinburgh, this is where she wrote and completed the books that took

Anna Burkey, our guide at the Centre, proudly points out that her city was the first ever to be awarded “UNESCO City of Literature” status. Among those bizarre, but true, oral tales is the story of Deacon Brodie who lived in Brodie’s Close. By day Brodie was a pious, well-respected citizen and city counsellor, by night, however, a womanizer, gambler and thief. He was eventually convicted and given what Angus calls “a suspended sentence” — i.e. he was suspended by the neck from a hangman’s noose. Deacon Brodie despite his notoriety — or perhaps because of it — achieved immortality. He was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s schizophrenic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. After lunch, with time whizzing by, I pay a quick visit to the Elephant House cafe, unimpressive but for its claim to fame as one of the places where Rowling wrote the early Harry Potter stories. It is filled with student types, tourists and a noisy babble of conversation. Edinburgh’s vitality is like oxygen in the bloodstream, a rush of images, places, lives and dreams. Mesmerizing and compelling. And also just as Angus says, “intoxicating and addictive”. Tips for the battle against weeds Give this tactic a try: mulch your vegetable garden with grass clippings I Googled it and found that Primula acaulis is a common primrose. It is a perennial and should be planted in shade. How do you explain this? A. It is confusing. The Primrose acaulis sold in grocery stores at this time of year aren’t the traditional kind. This type has been selected over many years to develop enormous blossoms and vibrant colours and in the process the basic hardi-

ness (and almost all the scent) has been lost. If you plant them out in the garden here, they behave like annuals — generally they dwindle away and die. Since much of the selection process was in California, it’s likely these primroses developed more sun tolerance. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca.

For That Special Someone

This week I answer a couple of questions from readers: Q. Last year I lost the battle with clover in my vegetable garden and while it’s been largely removed, roots and all, I know it will return. I have considered planting parsley everywhere to choke the clover out of sunlight. Any advice would be much appreciated. A. If you have a lawn in your yard, you could try mulching your vegetable garden with grass clippings. If you need a larger quantity, non-composting friends with lawns may be happy to give you clippings. Two inches (5 cm) should work well. Any weed roots remaining under the mulch will probably re-sprout, but new weeds won’t. Grass clipping mulches offer several benefits. They hold moisture in the soil, return nutriments (especially nitrogen) to the soil and attract lots of earthworms

(deeply) in spring. About planting parsley: a few people do grow massive amounts of parsley for making pesto, either alone or mixed with basil. But you need to know that parsley shades out vegetable seedlings just as thickly as weeds do. Q. I was at the grocery store today and it had primroses for sale. The tag said “Primula acaulis. Annual.” On the back it said full sun.

might be do-able. Since Sea Soil is sold in bags (not bulk) by most nurseries, mulching a large garden can be expensive. Did you know clover is actually a soil-builder because it fixes nitrogen from the air, then moves it through its stems and roots down into the soil? Some organic gardeners use clover as an organic fertilizer, sowing it in fall and composting it or digging it in

that aerate the ground. Some people say grass clippings attract slugs, but I’ve not noticed any great increase in numbers after applying this mulch. Grass clippings do get thin and patchy by late winter, partly because birds and other wildlife like to forage in it. To suppress weeds, this mulch needs to be replenished every spring. If you can’t obtain grass clippings, weed-free compost is also a good mulch. Home compost is not usually weed-free since it doesn’t usually reach temperatures high enough to kill seed. But organic gardeners generally prefer to use their own compost for vegetables. Many gardeners find commercial compost a real labour-saver. Because processing takes place at very high temperatures, it is almost invariably free of weeds. It’s also extremely nutritious and for clay soil gardeners the mixes that include a little sand are great soil conditioners. Sea Soil is absolutely weed-free and rich in plant food. If you have a small garden, mulching with that

Prekaski having fun with latest role BY

Madelin Prekaski’s latest theatre role will see her take part in Gateway Theatre’s production of a Charles Dickens classic. “It’s a great cast and Great Expectations is a great story,” she said while on her way to rehearsals Wednesday. The Tsawwassen 12-yearold plays young Estella, a role she’s having fun with, thanks in part to performing with a British accent. “I picked it up pretty fast,” she said, noting that a coach helped her out with the accent. The play’s first show took place Thursday. “I’m really excited and kind of nervous at the same time,” she said. Prekaski, who made her live theatre debut in 2009, said she enjoys acting because it allows her to step into someone else’s shoes. “I really like acting because it’s like being

somebody you’re not and having a different personality. I just find that fantastic, It’s an amazing experience.” She said her character in Great Expectations, who has a spiteful adoptive mother called Miss Havisham, is quite mean to boys. “Miss SUBMITTED PHOTO Havisham Tsawwassen’s Madelin Prekaski taught her to plays young Estella in Gateway break other Theatre’s production of Great boys’ hearts Expectations. because she had her heart broken.” past two years. Royals battle back to earn single point

The Tsawwassen Royals reserves continued their strong play of late in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League Cat “B” division, grabbing a well-earned point in a 2-2 draw with the Norvan Saints last Sunday at South Park. The visitors struck first from a beautifully executed corner, but Colin Jones fired the Royals level in the 14th minute. Norvan then scored again late to make it 2-1 at the interval. Tsawwassen took over and dominated the second half, earning a penalty in the 70th minute, which Zach Dabrowski converted. Despite numerous chances and the run of play, they couldn’t notch a winner. A week earlier, the Royals played to another draw, this time a 1-1 result with Croatia “B” in

Vancouver. Tsawwassen opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Evan Jones launched a long bomb throw that his brother Colin tapped in at the back post. The young Croatian team pounced on a turnover 12 minutes later, forcing a penalty which they converted. Next up for the Royals (6-37) is a make-up game with Club Punjab Sunday at South Park. Corner Kicks…. The Royals’ main squad is deadlocked for top spot in the VMSL 2C division with a 10-33 record. The locals’ run to the top of the table is highlighted by a six game unbeaten streak, that includes a 1-1 draw against Pont Grey last week. They travel to the North Shore on Sunday to face the last place West Van Royals.

Midget Canadians lose ground A pair of solid road performances still wasn’t enough for the Greater Canadians to gain ground in their pursuit of top spot in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. In a weekend series with the front-running and defending provincial champion Vancouver Northwest Giants, the Canadians dropped a 4-3 decision last Saturday, then salvaged a 3-3 tie 24 hours later. The results leave the regional rep team in fourth place and five points back of the Giants. Malcolm Glaholt’s goal midway through the third period earned the single point in the series finale. The Canadians return to action this weekend against the Fraser Valley Bruins.

I am honoured and grateful.” The Daryl Thompson Award is named in honour of the late former Sport BC Chair, Daryl Thompson, and the recipient is selected annually by Sport BC’s Board of Directors. Previous award winners include John Furlong (1998), Rick Hansen (1986), and Terry Fox (1980). Unbeaten run in league play earns Midget Wolverines tier one banner

The South Delta Wolverines Midget C1 hockey team capped an undefeated season by winning the Fraser Valley West Tier 1 League championship this week. Coached by Lee Anderson, Jamie Smith and Chris Graham, the Wolverines have had a dream campaign, going 9-0-1, with the only tie coming in the last game of the season. The secret to their success has been committed team play, strong leadership and a willingness of all the players to put the team first. Led by the MVP caliber goaltending of Connor Sudbury and strong defensive play from captain Mitch Marentette, Dan Keen, Trysten Anderson and Aaron Rota, the Wolverines finished with a goals-against average of just 1.50 goals per game which ranked number one among 45 midget teams in Fraser Valley West. South Delta also finished in the top three offensively, led by strong perfor-

mances from centres and assistant captains Richard Hudie and Zach Smith. Forwards Derek Wheater, Mike Schwabe, Cam Bower, Arjun Bains, Bradyn Dulko, Robbie Scrannage, Rob Graham and Brandon Brennis provided timely goals and a real commitment to team defense. Brennis and Wheater also filled in on the blueline when injuries and absences required it. The team maintained a low level of penalty minutes, finishing in the bottom four of the tier, and was committed to ensuring getting sportsmanship points in mind during their game play. Overall, the accomplishments came through a commitment to shared goals and showing up for practices and games. The Wolverines thank all of the parents, as well as Jesse Anderson for assisting wherever needed and Petra Keen for providing her usual high standards of team management.

Card of Thanks

Our sincere gratitude to all who made donations, telephoned, sent cards, flowers, meals, emails and guest book messages. And for the many home, hospital and care home visits. We are truly blessed to have so many caring relatives & friends. The families of Charlie and Shauna Giordano

When we are sad and lonely And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on.” Each time we see your photo You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry I’m only sleeping We’ll meet again someday.”

GIRMAN Claudia Jane Jan 6, 1956 - Jan 30, 2011 Claudia died early Sunday morning with her husband at her side. She lived with Lymphoma for more than five years, but throughout most of her illness Claudia continued to live her life as normally as possible. She worked tirelessly as an i nterior designer and business owner and helped countless customers throughout the lower mainland achieve the home of their dreams, many of whom became her friends, such was Claudia’s warmth and generosity toward people. Claudia also volunteered her time and energy at The Kinsmen Recreational Centre in Tsawwassen for many years, where she and her mother Molly Girman were well known. Claudia is survived by her devoted husband of more than 23 years Martyn Hurst. Her brother Lloyd Girman, sister-in-law Lea Girman, and her nephews Jared Girman (Christine Muckle), Jordan Girman and Joshua Girman (Ashleigh Hall). She is pre-deceased by her father Fritz Girman, mother Molly Girman, and her brother Glenn Girman. Martyn Hurst would especially like to thank the Palliative Care team from the Delta Hospital with whom he worked closely to make Claudia’s remaining months at home as comfortable as possible. He would also like to thank his friends in the community who stepped forward with small but simple acts of kindness during this difficult time. There will be no remembrance service, Claudia didn’t want a fuss. However, anyone wishing, to honour her memory, a donation can be made to either the Kinsmen Recreational Centre in Tsawwassen, or to the Palliative Care team at the Delta Hospital. - Martyn would also like to say that he will really really miss the old bat, and Wiffey where ever you’ve gone, you’d better be waiting for me. I’m not done with you yet.

Passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of January 29th, 2011 at the age of 102 May was born in London, England on July 30th.1908 and as a young girl of 4 immigrated with her family to Duncan, BC. When May was 10 the Morley family move to Victoria BC and it was there that she resided for the majority of her life. May attended the Girls Central School, and then afterwards went onto work at the Hudson’s Bay Company. It was at Hudson’s Bay where she met her husband John. They were married in 1930 and made a happy home together at 1211 Mackenzie Street. May was a devoted wife and loving mother to her son Jack and daughter Lillian. May also cared for both hers and John’s parents for many years. May was very active in her beloved Fairfield United Church as well as a multitude of community groups such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Brownies and the PTA. May was well known for her knitting and often made costumes for the local drama groups. May’s home was always open for her many family and friends and there was always a “nice cup of tea” at the ready to be enjoyed in her cozy home or in John’s beautiful kept gardens. Her strong faith and special love of children made an outstanding Grandmother, GreatGrandmother, Great-Great Grandmother and Aunty to many generations of family. May was predeceased by her dear husband John and son Jack. We will deeply miss May and remember her fondly with much love. The family would like to thank Dr. R Turnbull and the dedicated volunteers and staff at Mountain View Manor in Ladner for their care of May. In view of May’s love for children the family request donations be made to Queen Alexander Foundation for Children at 2400 Arbutus Road, Victoria, BC V8N 1V7. A memorial service will be held at Fairfield United Church in Victoria on Saturday February 5, 2011 at 12:30 pm. Interment to follow at Royal Oak Burial Park.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Lie low, rest Sunday morning. This afternoon to Tuesday your energy and charisma surge – a bit of big luck could come, maybe involving home, relationships or money. (However, don’t push authorities.) Chase money Wednesday to Friday noon – but take care with purchases. Your hopes and your money resources (earnings level, savings) are in conflict – find reality. You might sense, or be offered, a career or status “partnership.” It’s subtle, you have to be intuitive or watch clues. Friday eve, Saturday bring errands, casual friends, curiosity and variety – read, write, talk. Taurus April 20-May 20: The emphasis lies on ambition, career, prestige relationships, your reputation and status. Elements of fantasy/deception, creative ideas and impatient bosses crowd this zone. If you deal with government, large corporations, institutions or charitable agencies, “impatient bosses” will be less of a factor. Be willing, quick to respond – and keep your sense of humour (especially Thursday!). Use Sunday eve through Tuesday for research and planning – get plenty of rest. Your energy surges Wednesday to Friday: display your skills, work hard. Excellent purchases Friday eve, Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The accent lies on gentle love, compassion, broad vision, law, higher education, publishing, far travel and cultural rituals. February 5/6’s sober, realistic love wish is almost sure to come true. But a “sweet confection” love wish, involving beauty, and perhaps involving a Libra or Taurus, is less likely to come true. (Some “destiny” lies in wait for this one – either a wipe-out, or a deep rebirth.) In other ways, Sunday to Tuesday brings wish fulfillment, social delights and happiness. Rest, lie low Wednesday/Thursday. You shine, succeed and attract others, Friday eve, Saturday!

1410

Cancer June 21-July 22: The emphasis lies on mysteries, sex, intimacy, research, large finances, lifestyle, crucial health matters, commitment – anything that can change your life deeply (usually another person is involved). This month, these changes tend to work through your ambitions, career, or status situations. E.g., a “status” wedding changes your life and finances. Or a career opportunity demands a commitment (of $?) from you, and will change your life. (Your career is marked by splendid luck this winter/spring.) Charge ahead SundayWednesday (a happy day!). Retreat, rest, plan Friday eve, Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships, relocation, dealings with the public, fame, negotiations, litigation, agreements, opportunities and opposition – these fill February. This week, especially Sunday to Tuesday, emphasizes the source of this winter/spring’s good luck: legal, loving, intellectual, international and cultural scenes. Work, health and your duties or ambitions might interfere – these are heading for a deep change and “rebirth.” (It centres on Wednesday, but could occur anytime in February.) Chase your ambitions Wednesday, but avoid conflict, aggression Thursday. Joy, friends, Friday/Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Work’s essential – get it done. Your efforts, duties (and perhaps health) are tied up with an influence of deep change this month, especially this Sunday to Tuesday. This can manifest as: a sexual affair with a co-worker, investment in your job or tools/machinery, or changes brought about by your job or health – all are agents of change – beneficial change. Money goes better than romance right now. A gentle love floats in Wednesday, but irritation dissipates affection Thursday. (DON’T invest or make big changes this day.) Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday – success accompanies you!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The emphasis is on romance, creativity, beauty, luck, risk, pleasure, charming kids, sports/games. You’re riding a winning streak – recognize and use it, seize on openings, issue invitations, respond, speak what’s in your heart, etc. Take a chance! The source of your January-to-June luck is highlighted Sunday afternoon through Tuesday: relationships, relocation, negotiation, agreements and contracts, litigation, co-operation. Clue: everything in the first sentence will aid these; but security, property, family will “fight” them. These, security, property, etc., are about to transform. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Be gentle on the home front – spend energy on renovations, repairs, rather than causing family friction. Think back and ahead: decide who should stay in your life, who should leave. Your choices will affect your health and your duties, for good or ill. Your work will expand for the next four months – clues arrive Sunday to Tuesday. Quiet discussions and administrative contacts benefit your efforts, but more adventurous communications (especially of love or competition) will erect barriers to work success – take heed Thursday. Mysteries, intimacy and finances succeed Friday eve, Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Romance, creativity and a risk-taking mood steal upon you Sunday afternoon to Tuesday – take that risk! But realize money and confidence aid romance/creativity more than wishful thinking does. You might have some puzzles to work out around these: romance, pleasure, money and work.Work definitely faces you Wednesday (success) and Thursday (when work interferes with romance’s communications, or might be dangerous – practise safety). Exciting meetings (and some a bit more stable, boring, with other generations) arrive Friday eve/Saturday: love’s possible! All month, money’s lucky.

Feb. 6 - Feb. 12 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Chase money, buy/ sell, seek lucrative clients – but most importantly (as Sunday to Tuesday might whisper to you) pursue the connection between security and money: e.g., buy or sell real estate, start a retirement fund, put away funds for your children’s education, purchase insurance, spend on new business premises or to expand your territory. Ending unprofitable or stale situations is also a wise move financially. Romance and pleasure call Wednesday (successfully) and Thursday (not – beware “wasted money”). Tackle chores Friday eve, Saturday: you’re ambitious, productive! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness are at a peak! Start important projects, seek favours, call in markers, show yourself in person. You’re very communicative, curious and travel-prone this month – these are emphasized Sunday to Tuesday. A Libra and a Gemini are attracted – the Libran is very serious. A Leo wants to spar – and join. Attend to domestic matters, family and security, property and “territory” Wednesday to Friday afternoon. Don’t be overbearing Thursday p.m. Romance, creative surges and the urge to take a big chance arrive Friday eve, Saturday – yes, plunge in! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest, lie low, contemplate, plan. Be charitable, spiritual. Attend to obligations, committee and administrative chores. (Do taxes?) You will want to be free of these in two weeks when your energy and money luck will soar upward. Let much of your planning involve finances. Money, earnings and possession are highlighted Sunday p.m. through Tuesday – let realism rule fantasy and wishful thinking. Your wishes, however, do have a destined road ahead – something is wiped out or born this week; it changes your future. Careful with money Thursday. Deep rest, good family Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
