Hospice volunteer dies in crash

Patrick Lobsinger, who had been with group since its inception 19 years ago, killed as plane goes down in Mission BY

A fatal plane crash earlier this week in Mission has left a big hole in the Delta Hospice Society. Longtime volunteer Patrick Lobsinger died Wednesday afternoon in the crash that also

claimed the life of pilot Donn Hubble. The two men were practicing flying formation with three other aircraft when it appears the plane behind them struck their plane. Lobsinger was a passenger in Hubble’s plane, which was sent plummeting into a slough near the

Fraser River. Lobsinger, a flying enthusiast who died doing what he loved, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hubble was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where be later died. “This tragic news hit many of us very hard at Delta Hospice

who have known and worked with Pat for almost 20 years,” said Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey. “Pat had devoted his life to serving people

The driver sustained minor injuries and was ticketed for speeding relative to road conditions. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the driver was also issued additional tickets for vehicle defects. The road, which leads to the Vancouver Landfill, was blocked for several hours while the scene was cleaned up.

NDP supports Delta’s efforts to put Southlands back in ALR BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Provincial New Democrats are applauding the move by Delta council to have the controversial Southlands property in Tsawwassen placed back in the

Agricultural Land Reserve. Council this week unanimously approved sending the recommendations for a new area plan, written by CAO George Harvie, to a March 1 public hearing. The most surprising proposal is to apply to the Agricultural Land

Commission to have the 538-acre Southlands put back in the ALR. The Southlands is zoned agricultural and in the regional district’s Green Zone. Supporting the move, the NDP say a growing population and a growing appetite for local food

are both good reasons to return the Southlands to the ALR. A recent auditor general’s report shows that under the B.C. Liberals, the amount of land in the ALR on the south coast has declined by eight per cent despite the region’s growing population

and growing interest in local food, according to the NDP. “After a decade of B.C. Liberal mismanagement of the Agricultural Land Reserve, the Lower Mainland now has less See SOUTHLANDS page 3

Delta’s had its fill of dumping Municipal officials express their concern over lack of enforcement to prevent the abuse of prime farmland BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The dumping of large quantities of fill in Delta highlights the Agricultural Land Commission’s lack of resources to protect farmland, says Coun. Ian Paton. The first farmer in a quarter century to be elected to council last year, Paton joined a chorus of concern by local farmers that Delta’s agricultural land is being abused by the dumping of soil and material from uncertain sources. “The land commission only has two bylaw enforcing officers for the entire province, that’s how strapped they are for funding,” Paton told the Optimist. The issue has been brought to the forefront lately with fill dumping taking place at a property on 104th Street in East Delta. The ALC approved the deposit of 300,000 square metres of soil on the property as a non-farm use with conditions to include regular monitoring by a professional agroligist. Delta’s agricultural advisory committee, however, is concerned about the quality and suitability of the material being deposited and sought clarification regarding what monitoring is taking place. Mayor Lois Jackson suggested both the ALC and municipal enforcement efforts be charged back to proponents in the case of

large-scale projects such as the East Delta property that requires a higher level of supervision. “I’ve made a suggestion to our agricultural advisory committee in Delta and to our planning department is that any time they get permit applications for soil deposits for agricultural land that they should consult with members of our agricultural advisory committee. We’re long time farmers and pretty much know what’s going on all the farms,” said Paton. While there are some legitimate reasons to allow dumping fill on farmland, there are also abuses taking place, he said. “Some guys may have bought cheap farmland to make some money off of it by taking in fill mate-

SOUTHLANDS from page 1 agricultural land to feed more people,” said New Democrat agriculture critic Lana Popham. “The Southlands is key to building our agriculture industry in the Lower Mainland and meeting the demands of a growing population that’s increasingly hungry for local food.” Delta North MLA Guy Gentner said, “The Southlands have great farming capability. Returning the Southlands to the ALR would be a good first step towards reversing the loss of farmland that has happened under the B.C. Liberals.”

The move by council will once again bring up the debate about the viability of soil-based farming on the property that has had a long history of controversy, but this time it would be the ALC that will make a determination. Formerly called the Spetifore land when farmer George Spetifore owned it, the property was removed amid much controversy from the ALR in 1981. The request was put forward by Delta council and the Greater Vancouver Regional District. The Social Credit government issued the cabinet

as eyes and ears for the municipality to keep tabs on property owners trying to get away with illegal dumping in the meantime, said Paton, who recently joined Metro Vancouver’s agriculture committee. That committee’s chair, Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, agrees the ALC’s lack of monitoring and enforcement capabilities are giving the green light for agricultural landowners in Delta and elsewhere to try to get away with dumping mass amounts of fill. “We’ve have had unending problems with illegal fill (in Richmond). The land commission is understaffed after it had its budget cut dramatically, so they only have one or two people to look after fill matters for the entire province, which is

ludicrous.” Steves said last year he received a tip that illegal fill was being dumped on a small acreage in Richmond. Carrying a camera, he personally followed a dump truck to a parcel in the ALR. Surprisingly, when he followed the truck to the source of the fill, it turned out to be grinded old blacktop from a road construction project contracted by his city. “It calls for personal vigilance and calls for local bylaw officers to be on their toes as well. I’m sure there are more operations I don’t know about,” said Steves. He noted some property owners want to cash in on tipping fees of up to $100 per truck by allowing dumping of all kinds of material on farmland.

decision overruling the ALC at the time. Out of more than 8,200 acres of land in B.C. pulled out of the ALR during that period, the commission opposed only Spetifore’s parcel, the Optimist reported at the time. In an interview in 1981, Spetifore cited several reasons for the exclusion, including poor soil quality. He said the land was classified by the ALC in the lower soil ratings and he also pointed out the property was in a salt area built up from the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A report by agrobiologist Norman Putnam, hired by Spetifore, noted “extensive drainage and irrigation

noting the fact Delta has had two decades to fix the dumping of storm water from upper Tsawwassen through the Southlands, but nothing was done. “We welcome having staff investigate and report back, as a basis for further discussion about agricultural viability in general, although I suspect that the results will not change anything, given the millions of dollars that anything but superficial improvements would require,” he said. It remains to be seen if the land commission would accept all of the property or only part of it for the ALR, leaving more question marks about the future of whatever could be left over.

“His work with families was profound,” Macey said. “He did not waste a moment of his life on himself — he loved people and he lived his life fully every

day while living with his own health issues, which he just pushed aside. “We are indebted to Pat for the long history and quality of the service he

provided families in our community and beyond.” Macey said the organization’s heartfelt sympathy goes out to Lobsinger’s wife, Deanna, who is also

one of the group’s longtime volunteers. She said the two met at the society’s first training session in 1992 and later married

Pipes for geothermal systems will be buried under playing fields at 11 local schools as part of a $6.9-million, 35-project deal across the province involving Terasen Gas and B.C.’s Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement fund. The Delta school district has been pushing to make the projects happen in order to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. “This means we can use more money for education and other important things,” said school board chair Dale Saip. Seven sites in South Delta — Delta and South

Delta secondary schools, English Bluff, Neilson Grove and South Park elementary schools, Delta Manor Education Centre and the board office — will have a geoexchange system

installed sometime over the next two years. Four schools in North Delta will also be included in the program. Several South Delta schools — Ladner, Holly, Cliff Drive and Beach Grove — will have highefficiency boiler upgrades done. Terasen Gas would own, operate and maintain all of the new heat generation equipment and would charge the school district a rate approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission. Terasen Gas estimates the total environmental benefit of the Delta school district projects would be an approximately 55 per cent reduction in energy consumption and a 69 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases.

Bee campaign to begin creating buzz this spring BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Feed the Bees campaign organizers are planning to generate a buzz in the next few months. The joint Delta Chamber of Commerce and Earthwise Society project, announced last year, is aimed at promoting a healthy and sustainable bee population. Programs are being put together for the spring. “It’s going to be focusing

on education and awareness building events, as well as sort of a call for action,” said Feed the Bees co-chair and Earthwise Society executive director Patricia Fleming. The first event is expected to coincide with Earth Day (April 22). “We’re really trying to get people to plant beefriendly plants in their gardens. We’re going to be letting people know just what those are,” she said. Bees are very important

for the viability of many agricultural crops and a lot of the food we eat depends on pollination in order to be produced, Fleming said. She noted that over the last few years in North America and around the world there’s been a sharp decline in bee populations. Chamber board member Ian Tait, who’s also a Feed the Bees co-chair, said the project’s website will have details posted in the next few weeks about upcoming events, classes, open

houses, workshops, guest speakers and possibly a documentary premiere. “Look to website for more information as we roll out what we hope to be a very successful program to encourage residents, businesses and organizations to plant flowers, to feed the bees and diversify our pollinators,” he said. The project’s website can be found at www.feedthebees.org. A Twitter account has been set up at twitter. com/feedthebees.

In 2009, council approved an amendment to the municipally-owned airport’s zoning to allow part of the site to have more than just airport and aircraft-related businesses. The amendment redesignated land for a range of light industrial and business park uses. The area had previously been zoned for aviation uses except for a small section that was designated for farming and is in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The first development under the new zoning, B.C. Fresh, a vegetable distribu-

tion facility, has already been constructed. According to a staff report, Alpha Aviation, which leases the airport from Delta, has started negotiations with TGL Holdings Ltd. The company, which would sub-lease the property, is proposing a building for a combination of aircraft hangar and aviation uses, an auto parts warehouse and distribution operation with display/ retail of goods and office. The rezoning proposal will go to a public hearing before being considered for final approval.

A local charity will be getting some airtime this weekend on the annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon. Autism Support Dogs, a companion charity to B.C. Guide Dog Services, which is based in Ladner, received significant financial support from Variety — The Children’s Charity following last year’s telethon. The charitable organization contributed $50,000 towards the funding of four autism support dogs. Breeding, raising, training and placing one dog costs about $37,000, but are provided free to families. “Thanks to the help from last year’s telethon, we had our best year so far, placing a total of seven dogs with qualified families,” said Bill Thornton, chief executive officer of Autism Support Dogs. “We’re the only one of our kind in Western Canada, and we have a quickly-growing waiting list of families who would really benefit from the help our dogs provide. Without the support of Variety — The Children’s Charity, this list would have been even longer than it already is.” A North Delta family received the first autism service dog from B.C. $225,000 goal set to rebuild 12th Avenue facility for recovery groups

The board of the Little House Society announced this week that two prominent South Delta citizens, Doug Husband and Leslie Abramson, would head up the committee in charge of raising $225,000 over the next five months. The Little House Society was established at the request of the Corporation of Delta to oversee the running of a small house on 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen as a meeting place for recovery groups. The home had been purchased by Delta in 1984 so that it might be a place for people dealing with drug and alcohol addiction and for their family members to participate in supportive recovery meetings. After fire destroyed the house in 2009, the society’s board decided it would not only rebuild the house to be a meeting and training facility for recovery and community groups, it also broadened its mandate to include the development, implementation and evaluation of education strategies

These strategies are for different target populations: individuals, youth, retirees, families, small businesses, larger employers and the community at large. “As a life-long member of this community and having been involved in civic politics for many years, when I first heard about this project, I immediately saw the need for something like it in South Delta,” said

Husband, a former mayor of Delta. “Alcohol and drug addiction is a growing problem in our community, just like it is in all Canadian communities. I really believe if we can provide the right education to the right people, we can save lives. I am confident this is something the good people of South Delta will want to get behind.” Abramson agrees, adding, “I was impressed by

the calibre of people the Little House Society board was able to bring together in order to begin developing unique community strategies for educating people about drug and alcohol abuse and their plan to create a model not only for the communities of South Delta, but for other communities to follow as well. I’m truly excited about the potential good work that will be created through the rebuilding the little house.” Statistics Canada reports one in 10 Canadians, 15 years and over, have symptoms consistent with alcohol or illicit drug dependence. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those are unable to find and maintain lasting recovery. For more information about the Little House Society, call Jim Stimson at 778-887-1828.

MURPHY’S LAW It’s a move intended to put the issue to rest once and for all, but there will be all sorts of questions to answer before we ever get to that point. Delta council finally took some decisive action on the Southlands this week by getting the ball rolling on putting the long contentious piece of Tsawwassen property back in the Agricultural Land Reserve. I thought the recommendation in last fall’s ill-fated Tsawwassen Area Plan to simply maintain the agricultural designation on the property was asking for years of more unrest, so I was ready to give it to politicians if they endorsed such a policy. Either stick it in the ALR or work with the developer to plot its future, but don’t ignore the issue because you don’t want to get your hands dirty. The suggestion by CAO George Harvie to return the land to the ALR, which was given preliminary approval by council and will now go to a public hearing as we begin what will undoubtedly be a lengthy process, provides far greater certainty, but it also raises some interesting questions. If this was the right thing to do all along, then why did this council and bureaucracy wait so long? Twenty years ago the support level for developing the Southlands would have been in the single digits, yet now it’s approaching 40 per cent based on last year’s municipal mailout survey. With some modifications to Sean Hodgins’ plan, or simply the passage of more time, it’s not inconceivable to, gasp, see a majority actually favour development. The move at this time is also curious as it’s unlikely to win Mayor Lois Jackson and her slate any political points in Tsawwassen, a place where they’ve never been too popular. Opponents to Southlands development will likely continue to support other candidates, while the pro-growthers — and remember, there’s a significant number of them — won’t embrace this turn of events. A pressing question as we move forward is who will pay for the drainage and irrigation work that’s clearly needed to make the land viable for farming? Century’s plan would see the developer pay for it with profits from building housing on one-third of the property, but in the absence of that project, it appear taxpayers would be on the hook, or the land would continue to sit fallow. Many other questions need to be answered, including the biggest of all — Will the land commission go for it this time around? — in a saga that promises not to draw to a conclusion any time soon.

Plan comes together quickly once ground rules change IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT On Monday night, Delta council received and debated a new proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan. Whereas the earlier version had been developed by two councillors, senior planners and 12 citizens, and required 30 meetings and 11 public forums, it was withdrawn after two very heated public evenings. This new version was prepared over three months by the chief administrative officer, George Harvie, and three staff. No others commented. The proposed plan was discussed by council members for an hour and half, and was wholeheartedly endorsed by them. Now it goes to public hearing on March 1. Congratulations to Harvie, who was able to do what so many of us failed to do! How did this happen so fast, so smoothly? First, the degree of change being

proposed is much less than the earlier plan, probably less than 500 new units in all of Tsawwassen over its life. Second, no townhomes in Tsawwassen. Third, infill housing, if, where and when desired, will have to be approved one at a time. While building heights in the town centre are proposed to increase from four to six storeys, not much activity will take place as that design is yet to be accepted by builders. Fourth, less than 250 new units will be allowed in the town centre. Consequently, growth in this part of South Delta will take place not in Tsawwassen itself, but rather on Tsawwassen First Nation lands. The one major item yet to be sorted out is the Southlands. While currently zoned as agriculture, the plan calls for all of Southlands to be returned to the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). This recommendation flows from the survey of last spring where over 60 per cent of the population who responded said it should remain as agriculture. The process to achieve this involves several steps, and will likely encounter fierce opposition from Century Group, the owners and want-to-be-developers of

the 500+ acres. Along with the Southlands, all the area between the McDonald’s and Highway 17, now in the ALR, will be rezoned agriculture. How could the CAO and three staff accomplish in three months what two councillors, two senior planners and 12 citizens could not achieve in a year and half? Simple, the rules were changed. Speaking as one who was among the 12 citizens, I can tell you the guidelines and objectives handed to us were not the same as the CAO had. Mayor and council backed down after seeing the chaos last fall. Political expediency, also called survival instinct, was at work here. Do we have a better plan? If you like what you have seen around you in the past decade — yes. If you were looking for changes such as affordable housing or smaller houses — no. Do we have challenges? Yes, as the Tsawwassen Area Plan has not been updated since 1992, and there have been many cases of spot rezoning since then. Continued bypassing of the area plan makes an area plan meaningless. Let’s ask council to abide by this new plan — if it passes public muster next month.

INCOME, GROWTH & DOWNSIDE INVESTING TODAY, SHAPING PROTECTION TOMORROW DISCOVERING DIVIDENDS

Extend farm support to Southlands no cost to Delta’s farmers. This is all arguably as it should be. As a community, we support farming. The Southlands is much less fortunate. It is behind Boundary Bay, whose residents refuse a dike, and separated from Delta’s drainage and irrigation system by Beach Grove. We expect the Southlands to trust it doesn’t flood, somehow capture and use unreliable and possibly contaminated surface runoff from our yards and streets, and find its own drainage

solution. Municipal staff now recommends: 1) that Delta request the Southlands be returned to the ALR; and 2) that “staff report back with options for the provision of improved irrigation and drainage services ... consistent with other agricultural lands in Delta.” These seem understandable, but should the first be contingent upon a commitment to implement the outcome of the second? Should there be a commitment by Delta to support this land as

Peter C. Niderost BA (Economics), CFP Financial Advisor

it does other Delta farmland before requesting it be put in the ALR? Until Delta taxpayers provide the Southlands with drainage and irrigation services consistent with what they provide other farms in Delta, is not an ALR request suspect? Is it a sincere commitment to the support and protection of good farmland, or is it only intended to drive a stake in the heart of development proposals? I suspect the latter. Ed Ries

Don’t let rest of area plan get lost among ALR question proposed to have a separate public hearing for each part on the same night, March 1. I suggest the public hearings be held on separate nights with an interlude between since it is unlikely either hearing will be completed in a single evening, and since the Southlands issue will likely dominate. I also suggest the public hearing on the non-ALR zoning changes be held in about six weeks rather than three weeks since past experience indicates it

takes time for the public to become aware of the details of the zoning changes and realize the implications for each resident. The proposed non-ALR zoning changes are significant and deserve careful public scrutiny. I am concerned they may be adopted under the smokescreen of the ongoing Southlands drama. Finally, as the debacle of the previous area plan passes from the news, Tsawwassen residents

should remember the chair and vice-chair of the council committee were councillors Bruce McDonald and Heather King. McDonald and King proposed and seconded the motion last September to approve the doomed area plan and send it to a public hearing. There is a municipal election this November and I suggest it would be in the best interests of Tsawwassen residents to not re-elect them. Steve Graham

Editor: Delta CAO George Harvie presented a revised Tsawwassen Area Plan to Delta council on Monday. All components of the revised plan appeared to have been unanimously approved by mayor and council. The revised plan can be divided into two parts — (1) a proposal to place the Southlands in the ALR; and (2) several zoning changes, particularly in central and north Tsawwassen. Harvie

Kids, let your story be heard start by attending a threehour professional storytelling workshop with me at Cougar Canyon Elementary on March 3 during school hours. After a fun afternoon (and notice that you get to skip out of school for a few hours), we will see where everyone is. Then, over the next few weeks, I will work privately with each youth to ensure everyone is 100 per cent ready for the stage on March 20. And, on the big day, I will be there on stage with you, hosting the event. Writing and performing my stories (and coaching others to do the same) is what I do for a living, so

trust me when I say I can help even the youngest storyteller. And if you want mom and dad in the wings, or your favourite stuffy in your arms for support, that’s just fine with me. Don’t let the “performance” part of storytelling stand in your way. So get writing! The deadline is Feb. 15. You can drop off your story at Ladner Elementary (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or mail it to Water in Words, PO Box 1202, Station A, Delta, B.C., V4M 3T3. Details online at www. agentstory.net. Commuters too lazy to make use of transit system Editor: Re: It’s worth having conversation on alternatives to TransLink, Community Comment, Feb. 5 It would be nice if we put our own system in, but is it going to change anything? You just have to see the local shuttle buses that run

throughout Delta. They have very bad ridership. I wonder why this is? It’s not because TransLink is providing the service, but because we are too lazy to wait for the bus. TransLink tried to provide a good service but a lot of the time it was running half

Editor: The deadline for the Water in Words short story contest is less than a week away. I know there are at least a few young writers out there who have hesitated to enter because they know the winners will be telling their stories on stage at Genesis Theatre on World Storytelling Day. So, to all of those who are letting that “stage” thing stop them from writing their stories, let me reassure you that it’s not as scary as it sounds. You will not have to do this alone. I have come to know the dike as “God’s Café” because each day God puts on the creation menu a “blue plate special” that fills my senses and my soul. I have feasted on countless squadrons of geese; a deer standing majestically beside the path; soaring eagles; slinking coyotes; stately blue herons; ducks unlimited; the seasons changing from life to dormancy and back; bees; beetles and other crawling insects; the mountains in their majesty and the ocean in calmness and in power. Our God is a God of abundance and variety and life. We hear in the Gospel of John: “The Word [Jesus the Christ] was

sawwassen-based band Six to Midnight has been busy over the last year. Since the group’s local Haiti earthquake relief fundraiser show last January, the four-piece has played gigs in Vancouver and got down to work on a debut EP. The band has plans to put on a show later this month at the Tsawwassen Legion. “We’ve just been super busy, having a good time and practicing lots. We thought we’d do another throwback and throw another giant party in Tsawwassen,” says singer Jordan Field with a laugh. He notes they haven’t done a local show since raising over $5,000 for earthquake relief in Haiti at a gig at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club. “It should be a really, really good night,” says Field, referring to the upcoming performance at the Legion. With a number of shows in Vancouver over the last year, at establishments like the Shark Club and Venue, the band is getting good responses, the singer says. “It seems like there’s more and more people coming out to every show,” says Field. “We’re just having a lot of fun playing.” The group has also hooked up with a recording engineer and is hoping to be finished their eight-song CD effort by the summer. “We’ve recorded four songs and we’re just about finished our second set of four songs. Steelers send message to Ice Hawks

Grandview hands Delta home ice loss with teams likely to meet in 1st round of playoffs With the Delta Ice Hawks in a season-long battle with the Richmond Sockeyes for the best record in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League, it was another team that gladly reminded them what they are about to face in two weeks. While the Ice Hawks and Sockeyes meet for the final time on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) in Ladner, the locals better start paying attention to the Grandview Steelers. The teams are destined to meet in the opening round of the PIJHL playoffs and the gap between the two is much closer than the 14 points in the conference standings suggests. The Steelers roared back from a 3-0 deficit to hand Delta a 4-3 home ice loss on Tuesday. Each game in the season series has been a battle with Grandview now winning the last two meetings. They face each other again on Sunday afternoon in Burnaby. “Some teams you match-up well against and some teams you don’t,” said Ice Hawks coach Dave McLellan. “The style they play is not our favourite style to play against. “I thought all along (the playoffs) would be tougher than most people think. The good thing is at least they now know these games are for real. We played a lot of games for months that didn’t seem for real. This will heighten our preparation.” To the Ice Hawks credit, they

probably deserved better fate. After a sloppy second period that allow the Steelers to pull even, they dominated the final 20 minutes and missed several great chances to pull in front. It set the stage for Jeffrey Coi to jump on a miscue and put the visitors in front for good. What also hurt Delta’s chances was playing much of the game without John Proctor and Mitch Pacey. They combined for the team’s opening goal but received game misconducts for checkingfrom-behind and checking-to-thehead infractions respectively. The fact, the duo, along with Anthony Brito, have been the Ice Hawks’ most productive line of late also suggests why they only have a 3-2 record in their last five games. Team captain and PIJHL leading scorer Liam Harding has cooled off since an injury to linemate Cody Smith, while the trio of Kye Benjaminsen, Cody Fidgett and Aaron Merrick have yet to play to their potential. “You do go through a phase in the year when goal scorers are not goal scorers,” added McLellan, who suggests Smith might not be return until the playoffs. “Hopefully we get some confidence and get that back. “The other thing is a month and half of inconsistent line-up is starting to catch up with us bit. First it was Fidgett and Benjaminson out, and now it’s Smith.”

Boychuck and Laustrup also made their way to Delta on deadline deals from Nanaimo and PoCo respectively, while

Gohringer served as the Islanders’ team captain and was a defensive standout during his three years with the club. The Maple Ridge Burrards used their fifth round pick to select Nathan Clare. The Ladner native began his junior “A” career with the Victoria Shamrocks before joining his hometown team midway through last season. He recorded 21 points in 14 games and enjoyed a productive post-season with 12 points in five games. Rounding out the Islander selections, was Brandon Gains going in the eighth round to Burnaby.

KidSport BC officially launched the KidSport Delta community chapter with a cheque presentation to the KidSport Delta organizing committee. Delta is the latest community in British Columbia to open a KidSport community chapter, bringing the total number across the province to 41. Mayor Lois Jackson, along with Police Chief Jim Cessford, Deputy Fire Chief Ken Sim and members of the KidSport Delta committee were on hand at the North Delta recreation centre last week to receive the cheque from BC

Ferries Marketing Manager Rebecca Skiffington. This start up cheque will provide KidSport Delta with the resources required to develop the new chapter and begin serving children in the local community. “BC Ferries has a long history of supporting KidSport and we are very pleased to continue with this extremely worthwhile undertaking,” said BC Ferries President and CEO David Hahn. “Delta is very supportive of the new KidSport chapter,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “It is an important part of the social frame-

KidSport was established in 1993 by Sport BC as a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages six-to-18 to participate in a sport season of their choice. There are now 41 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to fulfill its mission of eliminating the financial barriers to sport participation.

C. John Gibson 1924-2011

John Gibson was a beloved and admired husband, Dad and Grampa. John was an RCAF pilot during WW II and the 1950’s. He flew the P-51 Mustang and was one of the first to break the sound barrier in the Canadair F-86 Sabre jet. He was always modest about his flying, though, and preferred to remember his Air Force years for the friendships he made. John met Carol, his soon-to-be wife, at an Air Force dance. They fell head-over-heels in love, and were married shortly after on February 17, 1950. They enjoyed 8 years of being stationed throughout Canada, and then packed up the station wagon in 1959 and moved from Ontario to B.C. They lived in Richmond for almost 15 years and then built their own house in Tsawwassen where they lived for over 35 years. John was passionate about many things in life. He loved his family and was proud that his five grown kids were happy and healthy, and that they gave him and Carol ten grandchildren. John was an athlete and in his younger years played soccer and baseball. When he moved to Richmond, he and Carol joined the Gulf of Georgia Club where they were avid curlers. John loved golf. He started playing as a teenager in Winnipeg, and played his whole life. He liked nothing better than to be on the links at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, where he was a member for over 40 years. He played almost daily and always insisted on walking the whole course. He liked to say that he wouldn’t use an electric cart until he was old. John had a great swing, and during his golfing career achieved 7 Hole-in-Ones. John enjoyed Big Band music, and he and Carol were great dancers. He had a great singing voice and knew the words to almost every song; when he didn’t know the words, he would whistle. He had a great sense of humour, and delighted his young grandchildren with magic tricks. As they got older, he always had a joke to share with them. John always stopped to talk to dogs and made it a habit to carry a dog cookie in his pocket whenever he went out. John and Carol loved to travel and saw many parts of the world. They spent 6 weeks every winter at Waikiki Beach. John would pack his golf clubs and his big straw hat and after playing 18 holes on the course, he and Carol would drink strawberry daiquiris and eat coconut shrimp while laughing about the rain and snow they were missing in Tsawwassen. Perhaps John’s greatest legacy to his family was his unwavering optimism. When anyone asked him how he was, he would say, “Can’t complain; it could always be worse.” John was forever finding the bright side in difficult times and during his successful cancer treatments in the 1980’s he would intentionally schedule a golf game an hour after a treatment so that he would have something to look forward to. To his very last days, John was determined to get back onto his golf course. Though confined to a wheelchair after injuring his back in May, John told his physiotherapist that he was in a hurry to get better so he could golf again. He kept his membership up to date at the golf course and his car filled with gas. He would say “Why give up? You never know what you can do until you try.” Sadly, he didn’t make it back to the golf course. He died peacefully in his sleep and we are convinced that his last dreams were of his family and his golf clubs. John is survived by Carol, his devoted and caring wife for 61 years, and by their five children and their families: Tom and Debbie, Cyril and Cindy, Sandy and Jarron, Pat and Bruce, and Christine and Nick. John and Carol have 10 wonderful grandchildren: Jesse, Eric and Rosie, Andrew and Adam, Camille, Karin and Lisa, and Kaitlyn and John. We would like to thank the many friends who helped John and Carol during the challenges of the past few months. There are so many of you and your love and support is greatly appreciated. John did not want a funeral, but we are sure he would like for you to remember him with a smile. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated. ARMITAGE, DONALD RAY June 8, 1929 – February 2, 2011

Don passed away peacefully at Delta Hospital, a result of complications which led to liver failure. He is survived by his loving wife Ethel of 59 years, as well as five children, 12 grandchildren, four (soon to be six) great grandchildren, his sister Shirley Pehrsson, four nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Don was born in Edmonton in 1929, and moved to Calgary at the age of 13 and then on to Vancouver at the age of 18. He started his career in the sign industry with an apprenticeship at C.H. Brawn & Son; receiving his certificate in January 1950. He met his future wife at the Crosby United Church Young People’s Group. They married in 1951 and raised five children in Tsawwassen. Don was an avid reader and he and Ethel were lucky enough to experience extensive travel to Europe, Africa, and Asia as well as to the Middle East. His favourite destination was Israel, where he and Ethel were caught by the local newspaper photographer rescuing their belongings amid a rapidly flooding country road. Don loved his children and grandchildren, taking them on many adventures; all of these adventures and miss-adventures led to creating many unforgettable memories. Don was fascinated by history, which was passed onto his grandchildren, many of whom have earned degrees in history. The experiences he had while travelling also led to his love of cooking, constantly shopping for ingredients and creating gourmet meals which he loved to share with friends and family. He was President of the Beach Grove Golf Club 1974-75 and a member of the Marpole Rotary Club. On June 1, 1950 Don started Rae Signs which produced a complete line of signs and pictorial work. Rae Signs was incorporated in 1956 and it was the largest commercial sign shop in Vancouver at that time. In January 1960 Don’s company began manufacturing and leasing plastic and neon signs under the name of Sign-O-Lite Signs. During this time, Don was a founding member of the Illuminated Sign Manufacturing Association. At the highest point, Don’s companies were the second largest sign company in Canada and eleventh largest in North America. Don loved the sign industry, from sales to manufacturing to finances. Through much adversity in his business career, Don maintained a very strong drive to succeed and it was said that his work was his hobby! He continued working right up until a week before his passing. A memorial service and celebration of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19th at 1:30 pm at the Tsawwassen United Church, 643 – 53rd Street. It will be a kilt friendly service. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

Elva Margaret (nee Maw) Feb. 16, 1927 - Feb. 6, 2011 Elva died peacefully at home early Sunday, February 6th. Elva was born at Mona Road, Peel County, Ontario where she grew up on a large farm operated by her father Seward Courtland Maw and her mother Anne May Agar. Elva was the second oldest in the family and had 5 sisters and one brother. As a young teenager, she worked in the Malton area in a factory building Lancaster aircraft. After WW2 she went to work in Simpson’s in Toronto. In late 1946 she met her husband Douglas Alan MacLennan at a summer cottage near Wiarton, Colpoys Bay while fishing. They were married April 30, 1949 and p u rc h a s e d a f a r m n e a r Belwood, Ontario. While living in the Belwood area Elva and her family were members and attended the Belwood United Church. Known as a geat cook and baker she often cooked for farming crews working in the fields and road crews as the cottages were being developed around Belwood Lake. Her apple pie made with Duches apples took 1st prize more than once in the Fergus Fall Fair. Elva took an active role in the 4H Clubs with her daughters and helping Mrs. Townsend, was a leader for several years. In 1968, Elva moved with her family to Elora Street in Fergus. During this time Elva and Doug spent weekends and summers boating throughout Southern Ontario, Muskoka and Georgian Bay. When Doug retired in 1988 they moved to Tsawwassen, British Columbia where they enjoyed several years boating and exploring the West Coast of BC. In 2009 Elva was becoming frail and she and Doug moved into a housing complex - The Waterford in Tsawwassen where they have enjoyed the camraderie of friends and staff. Elva is survived by her husband Doug and four children - Margaret, Ruth, Thomas and Donald. January 5, 1932 – February 4, 2011. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom, Marie Baugh. Predeceased by her loving husband Ken, and her granddaughter Hayley. Left to remember her are her daughters Trish and Terry (Allen Stowell), granddaughters Emma and Kendra, her beloved cat BeBe and all the people whose lives she touched. Magic. Not sleight of hand. But the feeling of awe that makes us smile when you see it. And not be too sure if you can really believe it. Butterflies didn’t just fly past her. They stopped and said hello. Birds around her didn’t just sing, they talked and they listened and shared in her laughter. Animals were drawn to her because they knew she understood them. They wanted to stay. She always welcomed them. It was her way. When you entered her house a special feeling took over. Music, wonder and beauty was everywhere. In the wind chimes and gadgets and toys. Things you wouldn’t expect to make noise. The pretty and delicate, the cute and the funny. Baubles, crystals, sequins and whimsy. In nature and flowers, it was all her. She made you remember the child you once were. Was it the love that she gave? Was it her beauty and bling? No, it was the Magic that she’d always bring. Now when we see a thing that has sparkle, or flies, or is covered in fur we can all smile because we’ll know that it’s her. Thank you to Dr Sharon Duncan and Dr Horst Holinger and all of the Health Care Providers. A Celebration of Ma’s life will be held on Sunday, February 13th at her home, #229-1133 Ferguson Road, Tsawwassen . Open House from 1:00 -4:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to RAPS (Richmond Animal Protection Society). On line condolences may be sent to nanacat@telus.net

In Memoriam

David George Davis

July 4, 1937 ~ February 14, 2010 We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, And days before that too. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name; All we have now are memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we will never part; God has you in his keep, We have you in our heart. It broke our heart to lose you. But you didn’t go alone, For a part of us went with you... The day God took you home. You are greatly missed Dad, and will be forever in our hearts. Mark, Marcia, Fenton, Ashley & Family

Cancer June 21-July 22: Mysteries continue, for one more week. Seek the truth beneath appearances. Dig deep. (Someone acts sweet but can’t or won’t do what they seem to promise. Applies all week.) Rest, plan and meditate Sunday. Visit a psychic, pastor or other counsellor. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge Monday/Tuesday. Monday holds refusals despite your luck, but you might vault over them. Tuesday favours you, especially in two areas: friendship, and depths. (So again, dig deep.) Chase money or a sensual bond Wednesday (good) and Thursday (goals might be elusive). Talk, travel Friday/ Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships are accented, but don’t fall in love or propose this week. (Don’t worry – if such seems imminent, there’s still lots of time.) Wishes come true Sunday – happiness, friends, light romance and popularity paint your future with golden strokes! But retreat this night through Tuesday: you need a short but deep rest: seek quietude, plan, contemplate. You’ll spy the inner workings of love Tuesday. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge upward Wednesday/Thursday – strike early Wednesday, in legal, travel, intellectual areas. Chase and conserve money Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last week of work – Friday begins a month of fresh breezes, exciting meetings, new horizons and opportunities. (Opportunities are unusually important this winter/ spring – seizing them can change your life.) Until Friday afternoon, complete chores, especially the obligations that “show up” Wednesday/Thursday – if neglected they will weigh you down later, just when you should be rising. Earlier, chase practical and prestige goals Sunday – success accompanies the ambitious! Wishes, optimism and social joys mark Monday/Tuesday. All week, DON’T begin a new love.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Travel, call during an active, friendly Sunday. But this night, settle into home – and there, through Monday/Tuesday, tackle some difficult questions around relationships, marriage and life’s opportunities. (Are there any left for you? Yes, many, but they’re all connected to ambition, career, until late 2012.) Tuesday’s better; a “secret” friend or stranger might help. Romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty whisk you to adventure midweek! (Don’t start a love relationship this week, though. It’s doomed long term.) Plunge into chores Friday/Saturday. Chase fun, friends, all week. Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent lies on ambition, career, dealings with VIPs, bosses and parents. Take a quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Confidential discussions, private planning, quietly lining up allies, contacting/applying to government or institutions – all these contain a quiet but lucky “change.” Chase money or shop Sunday, but NOT for techie items. Monday (barriers) and Tuesday (success) bring errands, communications, paperwork, details. Midweek accents home, and a choice between ambition and relaxation. Romance calls Friday/ Saturday. All week, avoid over-exertion, physical and intellectual. Gemini May 21-June 20: DON’T fall in love, propose, or chase a new romance this week. You’ve started to achieve success in group and social situations – and this will continue for four months of solid, heart-warming growth. If you’re single, this might well yield a new love. But not this week. You shine Sunday: start new projects, ask favours, show your talents. Your intuition is superb, so just do, rather than over-think. Quit by suppertime. Money, purchases and possessions fill Monday (barriers, waste) and Tuesday (success – buy high-tech). Communicate, travel midweek. Home, rest Friday/Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The romantic theme continues, but DO NOT begin a love affair or new relationship this week. Other themes, creativity, speculation, beauty, pleasure and teaching, are fine. Generally, you are (or your subconscious is) putting on the brakes a bit in all these areas, preparing for a subsequent surge. Sunday’s splendid – intellectual, travel, love and communication projects succeed. Exercise your ambitions Monday (dilemmas of choice) and Tuesday (success via creative effort). Social delights, flirtations, wish fulfillment arrive midweek! Retreat Friday/Saturday: plan the work that looms. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your “hibernation” period continues, so rest deeply – until Friday, when a month of romance, pleasure, speculation, risk and adventure starts! Neither make nor accept any partnership proposals this week (nor persuasive pitches for commitment of any kind). Sunday offers superb financial, investment, research, diagnostic and intimate opportunities. Sit down with a loved one for a deep, exploratory talk. Gentle wisdom enters Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious mid-week, especially first thing Wednesday morning. (Avoid selfdeception.) Friday/Saturday bring social delights and bright optimism! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: If a new wish or life goal comes to you this week, don’t invest a lot of faith in it; your destiny is very likely going to detour around this one. Sunday’s filled with opportunities (or opposition if you push others too hard) – exciting meetings or openings “synch” with your intuition. It’s a good time to answer “yes” on a whim. Life’s depths and mysteries rise to the surface Monday/Tuesday: DON’T invest, commit, nor seek intimacy Monday – Tuesday, these succeed. Gentle love, understanding, cultural stuff Wednesday/Thursday. Friday begins a month of domestic matters.

Feb. 13 - Feb. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Continue to seek money, new clients, to buy and sell, until Friday.Your personality has grown more gracious and alluring the past week or so, and this helps you with ambitions this week. You’re slowly changing, and slowly but seriously climbing, carving out a new “position” this decade. Tackle chores Sunday – you accomplish much! Relationships contain opportunity and opposition Monday, but success and good feelings Tuesday. Finances, investigation, intimacy, lifestyle choices are blessed Wednesday, “iffy” Thursday. Wisdom, gentle love come Friday/ Saturday. A busy month begins. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Yourenergy,effectiveness and charisma continue at a peak...sexual magnetism drips from you too. (Hmm, not sure of that image.) You might attract amorous attention, but DON’T begin a love affair now (nor ever with anyone you first meet this week). Sunday’s romantic, creative, pleasurable and beautiful – you’ll win at games or love! Tackle chores Monday (results uncertain) and Tuesday (good results). Relationships, opportunities, exciting meetings fill Wednesday (lucky morning!) and Thursday (be diplomatic, not evasive). Friday’s financial, and begins a month of money efforts. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Continue to lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Refresh your spirit. Friday begins a month of fresh energy, rising charisma and effectiveness – but rest until then. Sunday’s splendid at home or in nature – a great day to enhance your security, deal with family members, garden, etc. Romance, creativity and beauty touch you lightly Monday/Tuesday, but the best that comes from this is friendship. It’s not quite time, Pisces. Tackle chores and health concerns Wednesday/Thursday. Wednesday morning’s efforts can open a lucky career door. Exciting meetings, opportunities occur Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
