Cummins runs uncontested

As of deadline no other candidates come forward for B.C. Conservative Party leadership BY

It appears that John Cummins is running uncontested for the leadership of the B.C. Conservative Party. Cummins confirmed on Wednesday that as of the party’s nomination deadline at midnight on Tuesday no other leadership candidates had come forward. This doesn’t mean, however, that the former MP is a shoe-in. He said the matter will still have to go to a vote at a meeting on May 28. Cummins said he became interested in B.C. politics after seeing “the abuse that the community took from the provincial government,” citing the battle over the power lines in Tsawwassen and the South Fraser Perimeter Road. After 18 years representing the area in Ottawa, Cummins announced his retirement last month, along with Conservatives Stockwell Day (OkanaganCoquihalla) and Chuck Strahl (Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon). Cummins was first elected under the Reform Party banner in 1993, capturing more than 40 per cent of the vote. He also ran for the Canadian Alliance before the merger that resulted in the Conservative Party. Cummins first became involved with the B.C. Conservatives more than a year ago. At that time, he said, he was offering advice to help the long-dormant party. “The party’s come a long way,” he said. He said he was reluctant at first to run for the leadership position and leave Ottawa behind, but changed his mind after some “heavy pressure” from some party members. Some pundits this week have said that the emergence of the B.C. Conservatives will only

provincial election after being courted by both the Liberals and NDP, and now some are wondering if she will join the Conservatives. Cummins said that while the party would be “delighted to have her make that commitment,” and added that he has advised her to remain as an independent until election time, if she is thinking of joining the party. For the moment, Huntington said, she is firmly entrenched in her independent status and a switch isn’t on the radar. “I have given it absolutely no thought,” she said. “At the moment, I’m an independent.”

The candidates are now lined up for the May 2 federal election in Delta-Richmond East. The Conservatives last week named lawyer KerryLynne Findlay as their candidate here as Prime Minister Stephen Harper was about to visit Rideau Hall to ask the governor general to dissolve Parliament. Findlay was named as the replacement for Dale Saip, who won the Conservative nomination only to see it pulled three days later. Findlay told the Optimist this week she may have a different style and approach than Cummins but they also have common viewpoints. As far as the local issues, the proposed jet fuel pipeline that is to go through Richmond seems foremost on people’s minds in that city, she said. Across the Fraser in Delta, environmental issues are also major topics, noted Findlay, pointing out the power line controversy, Deltaport expansion plan and South Fraser Perimeter Road. “I think there’s common elements throughout the riding but there’s also quite distinct neighbourhoods between Tsawwassen, Ladner and Richmond East. There is common ground in that balance that has to be struck on these issue, so those will be priorities for me,” noted Findlay. Businessman Alan Beesley, meanwhile, was named the Liberal candidate this week. “The riding is in play and we’re very excited about our See CANDIDATES page 3

Foreign trade zone for South Delta?

Global Container Terminals Canada president says lands adjacent to Deltaport would make for ideal candidate BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

South Delta could be home to a foreign trade zone. The zones were created in the United States to provide special customs procedures, including dutyfree treatment, to U.S. firms engaged in international trade-related activities. By having goods sitting in the special zones, duty payment is deferred on those items until they are brought out for sale in the market. The zones are supposed to help to offset customs advantages available to overseas producers who compete with domestic industry. GCT Global Container Terminals Inc. a whollyowned subsidiary of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and one of the largest financial institutions in Canada, wants the federal government to explore establishing foreign trade zones in this country. The company operates four container terminals through several principal businesses including TSI Terminal Systems Inc. at Deltaport. Noting foreign trade zones are a federal responsibility, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Jeff Knight said Global Container Terminals is part of a steering committee that includes members such as YVR, CN, CPR, Port Metro Vancouver, Halifax and Montreal Ports, and Centreport in Winnipeg. The committee wants a review of the federal policies and processes regarding foreign trade zones and has made the B.C. government aware of its efforts. The province issued a request for proposals for

A proposed pipeline to pump jet fuel to YVR has raised the ire of Richmond council and while Delta’s reaction has not been as strong council and staff are making the municipality’s concerns known. The Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation (VAFFC) — a consortium of airlines that use YVR — is planning on installing 15-kilometres of jet fuel pipeline into YVR from a marine terminal and fuel receiving facility in south-east Richmond, along No. 5 and Shell Road and eventually to YVR at Sea Island. Between three and five vessels are expected to deliver fuel to the receiving facility in the south arm of the Fraser River. The current fuel delivery system to YVR is inadequate and overloaded as 35 tanker trucks commute to the airport daily to compensate for the lack of supply, according to the VAFFC. The pipeline would take into account the rising demand in fuel at YVR. The project is currently

undergoing a review by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. The mandated 45-days public consultation process, which included an open house in Richmond earlier this month, ends on April 11. Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Richmond city council has been publicly opposed to the idea. Delta council recently received a report on the project from staff. The report suggested civic politicians should request more information and make a number of suggestions to the VAFFC. Mike Brotherston, Delta’s director of climate action and environment, outlined a number of concerns and suggestions on how to mitigate some of the risks associated with the project, as well as the benefits. Currently, jet fuel is pumped to YVR from Burnaby through a 40-yearold pipeline, in addition to about 1,000 tanker truck trips a month between Washington State and the airport. Those trucks travel through Delta on highways 99 and 91.

VAFFC will require all fuel tanker vessels to be doublehulled. He went on to tell council that in the event of a spill in the river, aviation fuel has a high evaporation rate compared to heavier products such as crude oil or diesel fuel. Within 24 hours of a spill on the water, up to almost 90 per cent of the fuel would evaporate, depending on weather and river conditions; and more than 95 per cent would evaporate further and/or disperse within 48 hours. Problems can arise, however, if the fuel gets into marshy areas where it evaporates at a much slower rate. In a worst-case scenario, Brotherston said, 116 kilometres of shoreline in the south arm of the Fraser could be contacted by fuel. Due to its proximity to the navigable channel, the mouth of Ladner Reach is one of the highest probable areas of contact — and, in the worst-case scenario, if fuel got into Ladner Reach it could take up to 143 hours to clear. -With files from the Richmond News

Brotherston said the number of trucks is expected to increase to 2,200 round trips a month by 2020. “The project has the potential to remove thousands of tanker trucks from local highways and roads each year,” he said. Encouraging the vessels to use low-sulphur fuel could mitigate a possible increase in sulphur dioxide emissions from the ships that would be used, he said, adding that Delta would like to see the use of that fuel made a requirement. Coun. Scott Hamilton noted the improved safety on local roads and highways with getting many of those trucks off the road. “I don’t think we can under state the potential for the problems that can go wrong bringing that fuel... we cannot underplay the risks that we are taking continuing status quo and trucking that fuel up the way we’re doing it now.” Brotherston said the risk of a spill in the Fraser is minimized by the fact that vessel speeds are lower in the river, the bottom is primarily sediment and

Police warn South Delta residents about recent spike of thefts from vehicles

02096920

Delta police are sending out a warning to South Delta residents this week after seeing a spike in thefts from vehicles. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the department is still seeing people leaving valuables — iPods, cellphones, digital cameras, laptops, wallets, purses — in their vehicles. She added that

the suspect(s) are breaking into both locked and unlocked vehicles, and will even break in to steal loose change. Brooks said police recommend taking all valuables, including loose change, when you leave your car — or at least leave things well out of sight. The department is also reminding residents to

report any suspicious looking people. If your car is broken into, report it to police as soon as possible and, if possible, refrain from cleaning up the mess left behind until after an officer has responded. Brooks said investigators may be able to garner fingerprints or other evidence to help catch the perpetrator(s).

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It would certainly be ironic if a staunch right-winger like John Cummins turns out to be the NDP’s not-so-secret weapon. The longtime Tory MP, who is retiring after almost 18 years in Ottawa, is looking forward to ditching the cross-country flights, but doesn’t appear ready to kick the political habit cold turkey quite yet. Cummins, who had taken on an advisory role with the fledgling Conservative Party of B.C., announced this week he is in the running to lead the party. Having someone the stature of a John Cummins at the helm of the provincial Conservatives not only provides the party with immediate credibility, but could also be a blow to the ruling Liberals and a potential windfall for the opposition New Democrats. Cummins, who has earned a reputation for speaking his mind, expressed concern that Christy Clark’s victory in last month’s Liberal leadership race has left true Conservatives without an option in the next provincial election. Given Clark’s federal Liberal ties, the veteran MP has a legitimate point, but we’ve all seen what happens when the right-of-centre vote gets split in this province. You don’t have to look any further back than the 1996 provincial election when Jack Weisgerber’s Reformers and Gordon Wilson’s Progressive Democratic Alliance siphoned off enough votes from Gordon Campbell and the Liberals to hand a second term to the NDP, despite that party still reeling from the Bingogate scandal. What a Cummins-led Conservative Party will mean to the next election is hard to determine at this point, but it’s safe to say that even with the boost Clark’s victory gave the ruling Liberals, they’re still not in any shape to withstand blows from the right as well as the left. As much as true Conservatives might not have a premier of their liking (although they definitely have a favourite in deputy premier, and leadership runner up, Kevin Falcon), is it in their best interests to park their votes elsewhere? Put another way: Would they rather see the Liberals continue to rule or have the NDP back in power? That’s a selfish argument on the Liberals’ behalf, but at the same time, splitting the right-of-centre vote and opening the door for the New Democrats could be seen as a self-serving move by the Conservatives. Cummins’ recent decision could go a long way to determining the outcome of the next provincial election.

Take industrial farming options for Southlands off the table MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT There is certainly lots to talk about these days but, like recent commentary and editorial, I am going to have to stick with the story that will seemingly never end. Yes, the planning process, or lack thereof, for Tsawwassen and the Southlands has certainly been interesting. You would think that a 535 acre parcel of land would have been given more consideration over the years but that would require diligence, leadership and political will. If there is one positive to take out of recent events maybe it is the fact that we may finally be seeing these traits emerge after all the years of avoidance. I think many will agree that even the Mayor’s Summit was flawed in several ways, but it is interesting to see that there was indeed an outcome. All sides are not exactly in love with the results, but at least

something happened. Luckily, for our community, one of the outcomes is that we will not see industrialized non soil based agriculture on the lands. At least not yet. This can only be good news for all observers and armchair community planners. Century has been given the opportunity to present a new proposal to council. Not that the first one was ever given the time of day, but at least this one will be reviewed and maybe even discussed. While this process is underway, Century has agreed not to consider industrial non soil based agriculture opportunities for its privately owned land. The first proposal took a couple of years to produce with the help of community input and expert professional advice. For those of you who couldn’t attend any of the many public meetings that helped put the initial plan(s) together, they all had soil based agriculture as the bedrock theme for the development. This new plan will likely include elements of the first plans, but it will not be afforded the luxury of time for consideration in an election year. The new plan will be reviewed for a couple of months and a staff

report will be presented to council on Sept. 12. If at this time the proposal is again turned down due to a staff recommendation or council decision, the lands may then yet again go down the path for referral to the ALC for an inclusion in to the ALR. That is, of course, if some new strategy or process does not evolve. It is important yet again to note that private property owners have rights on ALR lands and on agriculturally zoned lands. Greenhouses (the “G” word.... sorry), account for 11 per cent of British Columbia’s vegetable production while using 0.01 per cent of the agricultural land base. The yield per acre of this intensive and sustainable farming activity will ensure that subsequent generations to ours have lots to eat. The capital required to get in to this business is substantial and some businesses are more suited than others to diversify and invest in the initial cash outlay. Is this fear-mongering rhetoric or are these potential outcomes ones that we are naive enough to overlook and discount? Lets ensure that we all get the information we need so that we can press to take the industrial non-soil based options off the table.

nothing really comes about it. Election time addresses your concerns when you bring forward them at the debates and hold these running candidates to the coal fires and to find out why the most important things that are important to you are not part of their platform, and why your concerns were never address in the past after contacting them over the years. Democracy holds your concerns up front and the candidates are responsible to answer them with precise answers, and if they don’t you may wish to consider moving on to another party or individual who will. The outstanding issue for me as an individual is our nuclear reactors that are operating in Canada, and as all of the world watches what disaster that has taken place in Japan, I am concerned, no I am more than concerned, and I wonder why is it no one has brought this up as a major topic/concern in this federal election. With all the alternative power choices we have why would we

choose to have one that can destroy our very lives and environment on this continent and planet? The question for me is which party, not candidate, will shut down these reactors in Canada permanently to safeguard our lives and our children’s future in this world our world. As everyone has watched the disaster that hit Japan and the effects it’s going to cause to their lives and who knows where else the tragedy will spread to from a natural disaster, everyone can determine you cannot control Mother Nature there are no safeguards there is only human loss and human suffering. The issue for me in this election is to shut down these reactors as this is being proposed in Germany as I type this letter, and permanently dismantle these sites, and as for the waste that is buried underground here in Canada, the scientists can figure out how we can get this contamination off this planet. Editor: All year individuals and families contact their local MP’s office with the concerns that affect their daily lives and these issues are important to them not just on an appointed election date. Some of these issues never get any attention or they are shuffled off to some office or staff member that cannot resolve the concerns of the individual and on election day they will never be resolved. Election issues should not be set by political parties nor should they be determined by governments who have not throughout their term settled the public concerns and individual concerns that have risen throughout their term in office. As a Canadian citizen I have exercised my democratic rights throughout the process and during the time period any elected MP has set in the House by bringing forward my concerns to anyone of them in any party. At times I may receive a reply but quite frankly

Delta Gymnastics closing in on fundraising goal Editor: We live in an amazing community, a community that helps each other. I want to thank Thrifty Foods and Andy Carter in particular for helping Delta Gymnastics with its efforts to raise money to fill the ‘foam pits’ of the new Delta Sport Development Center. We are very excited that classes in the new center will begin April 18th. Many who are familiar with our current facility know about our foam pit. Our new facility will have two pits that combined are 4,320 cubic feet and will take 30,000 foam cubes to fill them at a cost of nearly $75,000. The best thing of having a second pit is that all of our users will be able to have fun and train safely. However, we can’t have them open for use as two very large empty holes! We are very thankful to Thrifty’s for their creation of a unique foam cube campaign that is presently underway. Customers can now purchase a foam cube for just $2 and then they can toss it in the net as they leave

Deltans should have Southlands say

Editor: Re: Poll shows 90% opposed to developing farmland, letter to editor, March 26 I was taken aback by what Donna Passmore (campaign director of an activist group calling themselves Farmland Defence League of B.C.) wrote in her letter misquoting things I said. First of all she does

not know me or what my views are regarding building codes, animal welfare or pollution control. Also to set it right, I said that the people of Delta should have the right to say what happens to the Southlands, not the ALC. I did not say there should not be an ALR. Referring to voting rights I said: “People throughout time have fought hard to

Healthy Canada Report Card states that only 13 per cent of today’s children are getting the required 90 minutes of physical activity per day (this includes all activities from walking to school, playing with friends to involvement in sports and recreation) — we must change this as our children are the future. Thank you for helping us achieve this goal. We are very close to the goal of $3.3 million to complete the facility including all the equipment and infrastructure needed — only $300,000 to go! April 2, 2011 The Delta Optimist A11 Letters to the Editor

Dropping Saip wrong decision Happy to see outcome of Mayor’s Southlands Summit Editor: A hearty thank you and congratulations to Mayor Lois Jackson and the participants of the recent Mayor’s Summit. The news of the summit’s positive outcome is very encouraging to all who are looking for a path to reconcile the deep divisions with the hopes for the Southlands as the ‘Jewel of Tsawwassen.’ The Southlands is an outstanding and unique scenic and historic asset for the whole of the Delta as well as Metro Vancouver, B.C. and Canada. As such, the Southlands with its immense meaning and potential is an issue to be considered carefully in the most democratic way for the best possible out-

come to benefit the whole community and our neighbours. It is good news for democracy and for the community that thanks to Tsawwassen native, Sean Hodgins, a new Century Plan for the Southlands is forthcoming to Delta council and for public viewing and discussion. As a resident of Forest by the Bay for over 30 years, bordering the Southlands, I look forward to working together with my neighbours in a public dialogue to discuss the next stages of the Southlands future. The future of Southlands as the largest piece of the Tsawwassen community is integral to a new vision and plan for the future of Tsawwassen. Carol Vignale

Politics in Canada doing the opposite of what it should Editor: Politics should reflect and, at its best, conciliate the nation’s differences. Increasingly, in Canada, it does the opposite. It distorts, amplifies and inflames conflict in a political system with few checks and balances, where “politics denigrates politicians” and “politicians denigrate

politics.” As a result, Canada’s moderate majority seems to have become politically homeless and electorally irrelevant. In the forthcoming political “slash and burn” election campaign, pitting Michael Ignatieff against Stephen Harper, busily outspending and out-promising and out-pandering each

other, we’d perhaps do well to reflect on an observation attributed to none other than Woody Allen: “We stand today at an (electoral) crossroads: One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other leads to total extinction. Let us hope we have the wisdom to make the right choice.” E.W. Bopp

Editor: Re: Tories drop Saip as candidate, March 26 Well, here we go again. Finally a well deserving member of the community has earned the vote, and the right to lead as the Conservative party’s federal election candidate in Delta Richmond East (beating out four other candidates). Dale Saip is a proven candidate in both education, athletics, and community service offering deep levels of experience and innovative ideas for improvement.

In fact, we were finally optimistic that someone with the right experience would have the opportunity to represent our community and needs on a higher platform. I would like to ask.... where do people think great leaders come from? Taking risk and experiencing occasional failures are key components to achieving success, and ultimately providing great leadership! Shame on you to those that feel they have to stoop

so low and pull the ‘nondisclosure’ card on personal affairs of the successful candidate (which has been proven inaccurate — it is both conjecture and innuendo). If the issue ‘the time frame for the election’ was too short, then make the necessary corrections — but do not unfairly target the successful candidate. I am deeply disappointed with what has transpired — this is the wrong decision... on a number of levels. Mark McDonald

Hot Spring Trends You’ll Love

Every March I eagerly anticipate the arrival of InStyle, People – Style Watch (fabulous mag!), and Vogue to see what’s Hot and what’s Not for this season. For those of you that share my mild obsession, I’m sure you will agree that more often than not we are left feeling overwhelmed and confused. One magazine says to embrace our wild child with bright colours and bold stripes while another tells us to be cool and chic in our white on white with nude accents. Which is it?!

As a fashion buyer I must anticipate trends well before these magazines come out which adds a whole other dimension to deciphering not only what will be hot for the season but what women will want to wear. In light of our everchallenging economy I feel it’s very important to try and work in our existing wardrobe with new trends. We’ve invested in our fashion pieces and it’s ridiculous to only be able to wear them for one season. The idea is to freshen up your closet. These are my picks for the hottest of the hot this spring: • 70’s inspired looks: I think I’m hearing an audible “nooo… not again” but the idea is to add just one look not head to toe hippy-girl. Peasant blouses in a soft print are so lovely but you could add a cool belt to give it a more modern feel. Wide bottom jeans are definitely back but you might want to skip the ultra-high waist we’re seeing on the runway (ohh Farrah). I would also opt for a cute ballet flat rather than a high wedge.

5 pieces, 5 HOT trends: Spring trench Inwear $299, Stripe cardigan Press $55, Bright tank Made for Loving $56, Wide belt Brave $120, Flare jean Fidelity $194

• Stripes: nautical is hot but I do love stripes that mix unexpected colours (like a bold mix of orange and hot pink or more understated with grey and yellow)

• Bright colours: Slip on your sunglasses and grab the brightest hues you can find of orange, pink, green, and blue. And don’t be afraid to mix them together… matchy-matchy is definitely out. • Prints and florals: It is the season to have fun with gorgeous prints and get flirty with pretty florals. This is such a great way to utilize the great basics you might already have in your closet. Those skinny cargos you coughed up a mortgage payment for last year will pair perfectly with a soft floral blouse this spring. If there was a theme to spring 2011 it would be “girls just wanna have fun”. You don’t have to ditch your classic pieces or your sea of black but this season you can feel free to embrace that side of you that craves to be more fun, flirty, pretty, or wild. And even if you’re just grabbing a latte at Petra’s or a glass of wine with your girlfriend at Sharkey’s, rock a look. Why do we so often wait for a special occasion to bring out the good stuff? When you wear something that makes you feel beautiful, I guarantee your day will immediately feel a little more special.

End the End-Times speculation of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matth. 24:3) The response? “Watch out that no one deceives you.” (Matth. 24:4) This call to keep watch is repeated several times in Matthew 24 and 25. Keep watch lest you be deceived. And then Jesus went on to share several stories (parables) about what being watchful means. We are watchful and prepared for the end when, among other things, we “feed the hungry, quench the thirst of the thirsty (literally and figuratively), show hospitality to strangers and spend time in jail visiting prisoners. (Matth. 25:42ff) Once engaged in these kinds of activities there won’t be time or energy for idle speculation.

Recent events remind us of our vulnerability living in this world. Earthquakes and a tsunami have rocked Japan to its core. Not to mention the concerns for a nuclear meltdown in that nation. In addition we are witnessing unprecedented political upheaval in the Middle East and North Africa. These are times when a variety of “experts” claim to know the signs of the end of the world. Despite the sometimes dire “expert” predictions it will be well for us to listen to Jesus: “No one knows the day or the hour, not even the angels in heaven, or the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36) This was part of Jesus’ response to the question: “...what will be the sign

Heading to New Westminster Author Gwen Szychter to launch her second book of historical fiction

I

n the 1880s women in British Columbia did not have many options for their lives. But Sarah of Ladner’s Landing was trying to make the best of those few opportunities that were available to her. One of those was to become a teacher. In Gwen Szychter’s second book of historical fiction, Sarah in New Westminster, Sarah was preparing to qualify for that choice by attending high school in the city of New Westminster, since no such institution existed in Ladner — and will not until 1912. Szychter uses her knowledge of local history to draw for us a picture of the life in which Sarah could participate. In addition, Szychter has researched the history of New Westminster for that period. We therefore can acquire a thorough understanding of the life of a young woman beginning in 1882. Photographs of the city at the time help to flesh out our knowledge of

this growing city, as well as informing us of how the small village of Ladner’s Landing continued to flourish. Many issues of the time are laid out before our eyes — women working for a living, as Sarah must do in order to pay for her education; the practice of unequal pay for work of equal value, which Sarah encounters when she learns that she will be paid less as a teacher because she is female; and the relatively new concept of marrying for love as opposed to practical and financial reasons. We see all of these through Sarah’s eyes and experience her reactions to them. Through the years of her living in New Westminster, Sarah continues to enjoy the benefits of a close family, which helps her make her way. The positive results of living in a small community are readily apparent — how everyone pitches in when disaster strikes, such

as a home fire; how changing for the better benefits everyone; and how the joy of marriage can be shared with one and all. This new book of historical fiction will be launched at the Delta Museum & Archives Society’s Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room at 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent. For driving and parking instructions, visit www.deltamuseum.ca. The launch will take place on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. The author will share some of her experiences in writing this book and her perceptions of Sarah’s activities in pursuing her dream of a career, as well as her maturing as a woman, in the latter years of the 19th century. Sarah in New Westminster will be available to purchase at a cost of $12. Refreshments will be served, and the public is welcome to meet the

Ray Goddard will present a collection of his photos at the Tsawwassen Library during the month of April. Goddard, a Tsawwassen resident, enjoys nature photography and hopes to have about 35 images on display. “Anything to do with the outdoors is what I’m really keen on,” he says. A number of the photos at the exhibit will be from California’s Joshua Tree National Park, a

place Goddard has visited frequently over the last 35 years. “It’s a wonderful place. It’s a study in textures and shapes. I can’t get enough of that place,” he says. Goddard notes the popular mountain climbing location “looks like a moonscape” and that it’s been “weathered over the eons so you get all these weird shapes.” He plans to have colour images, black and whites and artistically altered images that “look a bit more like paintings” at the show.

Goddard, who got his first camera at 12 and won his first photo contest at 16, has been a member of the Delta Photo Club since 1992. He’s also a member of the Western Photographic Circle. Goddard has done previous shows at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre and the North Delta Firehall Centre for the Arts. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday from 7 to 8:45 p.m. For more on Goddard or to look at some of his photos visit www.raygoddard.ca.

The jars and ‘bombies’ of Laos Travellers are saddened by beautiful country’s legacy of war BY IRENE

BUTLER

Optimist contributor

H

ave you ever seen something so bizarre as to defy logic? As my eyes sweep over the vast array of prehistoric stone jars of mammoth proportions — there it is! A mind-boggling enigma! What ancient peoples fashioned these vessels, and for what purpose? I am rendered speechless as I run my hand over the rough charcoal-coloured mottled surface of the largest, standing three metres in height with a diameter of two metres, and estimated to weigh a tonne. Our guide Yang, my husband Rick and I are at Site One of what is known as The Plain of Jars near the town of Phonsavan in central Laos. This site is strewn with 250 jars. In total there are 60 sites containing a total of 2,000 jars. Of these, five have been open to the public for a little over a decade. We are to visit the

three sites that are in close enough proximity to be seen in one day. As we come upon the cluster of 90 jars at Site Two, Yang points out how these are taller and their shape more conical. Circular stone discs lie near some of the jars. “These are grave markers,” says Yang, “and not lids as sometimes suggested. Since lids for the jars are not found, it is believed they were made of perishable materials.” Archaeological evidence suggests that the jars are funerary urns carved by Iron Age peoples over 2,000 years ago. The first systematic studies were undertaken by Madeline Colani in the 1930s. Excavations by Lao and Japanese archaeologists in the early 1990s reinforce this theory, with the discovery of human remains, tools and ceramics that with carbon dating tests were found to span generations from 800 BCE to 200 BCE. The origin of the builders remains unknown.

Local legends claim a different purpose for the jars. According to the most popular, the ancient King Khun Cheung fought a battle against a formidable enemy and created the vessels to brew huge amounts of lao lao (rice wine) to celebrate his victory. A two-kilometre walk through rice fields followed by an upward climb brought us to Site Three, the most picturesque. On the crest of a hill, trees and shrubs mingle with 150 of the massive vessels and a patchwork quilt of green fields stretch out below until met by the azure sky. The serene beauty of the Plain of Jars simultaneously envelops the tragic history of Laos. The British based Mines Advisory Group (MAG) has signs posted at the sites warning visitors to stay within the stone markers along the paths so as to not accidentally set off a UXO (Unexploded Ordnance). At the MAG office in

Phonsavan we learned that during the height of the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1973, America bombarded Laos with two million tons of bombs. Thirty per cent of the bombs dropped did not explode, leaving the country littered with UXO. Since 1973 thousands have been killed or injured, and the incidence of accidentally PHOTO BY RICK BUTLER setting off a UXO A cafe with bomb casings continues at a rate in Phonsavan. of almost one a day, particularly they began clearing in 1994. the cluster bomb About half the victims explosive fragments which are children who find the the locals call “bombies.” small ball-shaped cluster MAG reports 175 UXO munitions while playing have been cleared from the near their homes in rural jar sites that are open to communities. the public, as well as 1,444 In Phonsavan bomb casfrom surrounding villages. ings decorate the restaurants In total they have destroyed and hotels as planters or a total 98,061 UXO since

On our visit to a village the ubiquitous bomb casings (some three metres in length) have been put to use in the building of water buffalo feeding troughs, fences and pigsties. We came away, our minds shrouded in the mystery of the strange monolithic relics and saddened by this beautiful country’s legacy of war. The increasing number of travellers to the Plain of Jars, now a UNESCO site, will hopefully bring about the funding needed to shorten the 100 years that MAG estimates it will take to make Loa safe. Perhaps this is a new purpose for the dynamic footprints of an ancient people. Soulful singers up next for Ovation Christine Magee & Kristin Fong to perform in Ladner as part of concert series

O

vation Performance Series presents two phenomenal soulful singer songwriters, Christine Magee and Kristin Fung next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Cedar Park Church in Ladner. The two performers met and sang together in the UBC Vocal Jazz Ensemble in 2005 while studying and

completing their bachelor of music degrees. They are thrilled at the opportunity to perform together in a double-bill concert that will be jam-packed with soul, gospel, jazz, blues, R&B and pop. Their exhilarating performance will feature solos and duos of original music and covers of popular tunes with a combination of

voice and piano. Magee currently maintains an active music studio teaching piano, voice and guitar in Tsawwassen as well as performing across Canada as a soloist and also toured in 2009 with one of the leading chamber vocal ensembles, musica intima. She sang in their most recent CD, into light,

which won a WCMA award for best classical album of the year and was nominated for a Juno Award. Magee has been composing and arranging music since 2002 and debuted her first album, Overcome, in 2007; and was awarded Best Jazz and Blues Song of the Year at the GMA Canada Awards. The Ladner Woodworkers Club will be holding an open house next Saturday. “It’s an open house to invite general public in so they can come take a look around the club and see what we’ve got,” says Michael Hughes, who’s on the group’s board of directors. There will be examples of work done by members and possibly a few demonstrations, he said. Club members have built things like clocks, furniture, musical instruments, kitchen cabinet doors, salt and pepper mills, cutting boards, pens and bowls, noted Hughes. The club, which was started in 1976 with eight members, has a workshop packed with tools and equipment. “We’ve got an amazing amount of tools in here.

Lacrosse players take to the floor to battle cancer BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

They’re guaranteed to see their most floor time of the season and for a terrific cause too. Next Saturday, the lacrosse season will unofficially get underway in unique fashion when the inaugural Lax-4-Life takes place at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The event is a 12-hour non-stop lacrosse game featuring players of all ages. It will serve as a fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Inspiration for the event came from Ashley Robinson, 14, a lacrosse player and seven-year cancer survivor. “When her family lived in Mill Bay they started a Relay for Life group and now it’s Ashley Angels B.C. and it went from there,” explained Angela Smith, one of the Lax-4-Life organizers. “We have so many children and parents who have been impacted by cancer. Besides trying to help find a cure, this is an opportunity for kids to give back.” Although the event is not being run by Delta Lacrosse, it is serving as the official host and providing free floor time for the game which will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Participation is open to to all registered lacrosse players in B.C. Mayor Lois Jackson will be dropping by to welcome the the players. Other special guests are expected. “It will be non-contact with the players in full gear,” continued Smith. We are scheduling the kids (to be playing) close to their own age group as much as possible. We have four goalies who will be playing

(Left to right) Mitch Robinson (12), Addy Park (12), Justin Smith (11), Ashley Robinson (14), Max Stalling (10), Brian Larsen (12) and Jordan Smith (14) will be participating in the inaugural Lax-4-Life charity lacrosse game on April 9. The event is a fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. all day and we’re guessing each player will be getting eight hours of lacrosse. They are pretty excited. “The first year is definitely a learning experience. But we have received such a

positive response from everyone and it’s been really well received. We definitely hope to make it an annual event and see a lot of potential for it in the future.” Pledge forms will be available at the

arena on game day and a link is also available on line by visiting the Delta Minor Lacrosse website at www.deltalacrosse.ca. There will also be a barbecue with all proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Ladner blueliner now part of Sockeyes playoff run 15-year-old Jason Fram playing for PIJHL champions this weekend at Cyclone Taylor Cup Tournament in Fernie MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Three weeks ago, his hockey season looked to be over in heartbreaking fashion. Now, Jason Fram finds himself being part of a potential provincial championship run. The 15-year-old blueliner from Ladner has become a playoff regular with the Richmond Sockeyes thanks to a rash of injuries. He is one of four affiliate players in Fernie for the Cyclone Taylor Cup Provincial Junior “B” Championships which conclude tomorrow.

The injury bug hit the Sockeyes hard en route to winning the Pacific International Junior Hockey League playoff title, especially in their sevengame semi-final win over the Delta Ice Hawks. Three regulars were sidelined during the series and their status remained uncertain for the provincials. Fram made his playoff debut for Richmond in game six against Delta, then helped the team complete a four-game sweep of the Abbotsford Pilots in the finals. He would have been in the line-up even sooner

except his regular team — the Greater Vancouver Canadians — was also on a playoff run in the B.C.Major Midget Hockey League. The Canadians took out South Island in the quarter-finals then fell to eventual champions Vancouver Northwest Giants in the semi-finals. They actually enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the third and deciding game, before surrendering four unanswered goals in a 4-3 loss. It marked the third straight year the teams have gone the distance in a playoff series with the Giants winning each time.

Fram was going to do some off-season work to prepare for upcoming junior “A” tryout camps in Surrey, Coquitlam and Penticton. Instead, this opportunity with the Sockeyes is doing it for him. “It couldn’t have worked out any better for me,” said the Grade 10 student who is enrolled in the hockey academy at South Delta secondary school. “It’s pretty cool getting to be part of this and the Sockeyes are a great organization to play for. They have made sure I have felt comfortable fitting in. “There has been a little bit

of an adjustment going against older players but I was already facing 16-and-17-year-olds (playing Major Midget).” Fram was selected by the Spokane Chiefs in the eighth round of last spring’s Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. The former South Delta Bantam Storm player attended his first junior camp in August and the Chiefs have remained in contact with him throughout the season. “Hopefully I can do well at these camps and then make a decision this summer of which (junior route) would be the best for me,” he said.

U16 Kickers three-peat as District 5 cup champions Ladner Kickers U16 boys soccer team capped another impressive season by capturing the District 5 Cup for the third consecutive year. The Kickers edged Coquitlam Metro Ford Blaze 1-0 in the cup final, played March 12 at the South Surrey Athletic Park. Ladner carried much of the play and was unable to convert several chances before Danny Franklin found the back of the net in the second half. Kieran McCormack was terrific in goal at the other end, capping a solid campaign with another shutout. McCormack was one of three new players and all made a significant impact. Striker Kyle Harms led the team in scoring with 22 goals, while fellow forward Alex Grabowski added 13. Other top scorers for the club included Franklin with 16 and midfielder/defender Caleb Soukoreff with 10. The roster also includes: Connor McDonald, Phil Wlasichuk, George Thompson, Rajan Sandhu, Jarius Brush, Anand Randhawa, Evan Lister, Harry Thurber, Connor Pease, Mathew Loewen, Mike Thurber and Cam Strukoff. The team was coached by Nigel Pease with the assistance of Harold Grabowski. The Kickers began the season by placing second in the District 5 Red Division with an 8-2 record and 43 goals scored. Following the Christmas break, they

placed second in the “B” group — losing one of just six games and scoring 29 goals.

Ladner Kickers U16 boys soccer team capped another outstanding season by winning its third consecutive District 5 Cup.

Delta Deas Rowing Club got its competitive season off to an impressive start at events in Fort Langley and Vancouver. At the Head of the Fort, DDRC posted a first or second place finish in every race the club entered, highlighted by sweeping the top three positions in the mixed double category. In total, Delta had five first place finishes, six runner-up and three third place results. The dominance continued at the Head Up the Creek on the waters of False Creek. The course proved to be a challenge as the rowers had to deal with ferries, dragon boaters and outriggers on the very busy water way. Despite the adversity, DDRC athletes delivered four first place finishes and a couple of runner-ups.

South Delta Raiders Pee Wee “C” hockey team concluded its season in thrilling fashion by capturing the Richmond Minor Hockey Spring Tournament. The Raiders slipped past the host Ice Storm in the championship game, 4-3, thanks to Josh Dubois converting a pass from Quinn Cole with just 18 seconds remaining in regulation time. South Delta’s road to the final included going 2-1-1 in round-robin play — good enough for third place in its group. Goalie Cole Hendy enjoyed an outstanding tournament, with the help of strong defensive work from Hardeesh Rakkar, Sheldon Vantol, Ryan Moody, Daelen Magcalas and Russell Froehler who drove a wicked slapshot into the net in the quarter finals. Forwards Ryan Pugh, Sean Haughian, Ciaran Bostock, Gursagar Brar, Quinn Cole, Josh Dubois and Jared Krueger were a force in each outing. Jim Marsden and

Kyle Moorehead were solid up front in the team’s opening game but missed the rest of the tournament. The playoff round saw the Raiders double Port Moody 4-2 in the quarter-finals, with goals from Brar, Dubois and a pair from Magcalas. The locals then cruised to a 5-0 semi-final win on the strength of two goals each from Dubois and Cole, while Magcalas added a single. The gold medal game proved to be a nail-biter as the visitors trailed 2-1 after one period with Krueger finding the net. The teams were then tied at 3-3 after two on goals by Dubois and Cole. South Delta carried much of the play in the third and was eventually awarded with Dubois’ tally in the dying seconds. Coaches Mike Froehler, Paul Krueger and Marc Haughian agreed that this was a team victory with every player coming to each game and doing their job at 100 percent.

1010 MORRISON, Jennifer Leanne

July 29, 1956 - Mar. 27, 2011 At the Ladner hospice on March 27th 2011, Jennifer peacefully gave her body back to the Earth. She leaves behind her son Matthew Morrison, her soul mate Ab Singh, her mom and dad Mary and Geoff Schwyn, her sisters Paula (Chris) France and Lisa (Eric) Thomsen, four nieces, and one nephew. Jennifer was a devoted volunteer both at the hospice and hospital in Ladner. Additionally, she spent 29 years of her life working in the emergency ward of the Richmond General Hospital. Her compassion and cheerful nature touched many lives. Her family expresses its sincerest gratitude to Dr. David Kason for treating her as if she were his own. We would also wish to thank the loving caregivers at the Irene Thomas hospice for the amazing work that they do. You brought comfort to us all. A celebration of life will be held at the Beach Grove Golf and Country Club in Tsawwassen on the 23rd day of April at 1pm. Despite her love of flowers and gardening, we instead ask that donations be made to: The Delta Hospice Society, 4635 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta BC V4K 4L8. We love you and we will forever enjoy the fresh air that you’ve become. xo

(nee Sampson) It is with a mixture of sadness and joy that we announce Ella’s peaceful passing into the presence of her Lord on March 28th, 2011. Born on October 1st, 1902, she lived for 108 years. She believed that the key to longevity was faith in God and the practice of intentional happiness. Ella was predeceased by her husband, Ron, in 1993 and daughter-inlaw, Doreen, in 2009. She is survived by her sons, Les and Doug (Mary), 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, extended family members, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She will be remembered and cherished for her deep compassion, her wisdom, her laughter, her warm spirit and her strong faith. A public viewing will be held from 2:00–4:00 pm on Sunday, April 3rd, 2011 at Personal Alternative Funeral Services, 3070-275A Street in Aldergrove. A graveside service will be held on Monday April 4th, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Forest Lawn Cemetery (3789 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby) and a public memorial service will be held on the same day at 1:30 pm in the South Delta Baptist Church (1988 - 56th Street, Tsawwassen). Cancer June 21-July 22: Be ambitious, this week and the next two. You could grab a promotion, or elevate your worth in the eyes of higher-ups (or cultivate a VIP and gain a prestigious new client, contract or business opening, etc.). This week starts with a jolt (of luck or nerves or ambition) Sunday. You’ll have to combine or merge competing situations to succeed – probably a need to reconcile home with career, gain your spouse’s or kids’ co-operation, etc. The potential for success is tremendous, so make every effort! This week begins 15 years of true understanding, spiritual recognition, and, resulting, true love. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: You’ve suffered 15 years of gullibility, deception, disillusionment and suspicion. (On the positive side, 15 years of spiritual awakening.) This week marks the end of that – though such long trends tend to dissolve slowly, now is the turn-around time. Think, contemplate the broad picture, and you should sense some clues to this change. The next 15 years bring a heightened sense of poetic mystery and nuance, sexual longing, deep spiritual intuition and subtle glamour – a better influence! The next eight years also feature mental awareness, and true love – wedded love. Sunday reveals! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sunday’s the centre point of a huge life change. The actual events can have occurred in March, or can happen over the weeks ahead. But they centre on this day, and this week. The events: a financial rearrangement or debt, a sexual lust or liaison, a commitment, a lifestyle change, a health diagnosis or surgery, a piece of detective work or research project. It’s destined to change your life. You’ll have to overcome financial “slowness” or caution. Believe in your luck! Be ambitious late week. Fifteen years of unhealthy relationships end: 15 years of “true relationship” begins.

Lisa Hughes • 604-931-7227 www.LisaHomes4Sale.com

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Start nothing new before April 23. Look to the past or to ongoing ventures, relationships. Your success is inextricably tied to relationships, and/or to opportunities, relocation, litigation, negotiation, fame or the public. Sunday can bring a jolt in these – e.g., love at first sight – but without the infatuation, gooey-eyed stuff – this is alert, exciting, alive, realistic. Downplay your conservative, reluctant, skeptical or cautious side. (If someone says, “You look sad,” it’s a clue to brighten up!) Love “elevates” late week. Your employment picture changes now to 2025. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Something unexpected happens at work this week, especially Sunday. Follow safety procedures, don’t work while tired, be patient, careful with electricity, machines and computers, or avoid them if you can. I’ve emphasized the dangers, but there’s also luck here: you might be called into work because someone didn’t show, or you’re the trouble-shooter in an emergency, etc., which can set you up for praise, promotion now or soon. Be good-natured! Fifteen years of love’s obsessive puzzlement ends; 15 years of love’s good sweetness begins. You’ll believe me, come June/July and 2012! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Sunday could provide a love shock. It’s illuminating. But it will only be lucky if you can balance impulse with caution (without letting caution win) and money or earnings considerations (or possessions) with your need to express yourself, to be yourself. (Sartre said we’re the slave of our possessions.) All that said, this is a hugely lucky week (and month, and quarter) for romance, children, creativity, school, travel, beauty, art and speculation! Opportunities arise Thursday/ Friday. Fifteen years of indecision, rootlessness end; 15 years of “deep home” begin.

MISSION • LAKE FRONT

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy, charisma and clout reach a yearly high. I didn’t add “effectiveness” because we’re in the middle of a Mercury retro period, a bad time to start anything new (lasting to April 23). Even so, your luck is strongly buoyant, and the “payoff” for past efforts or good deeds could arrive now (or anytime to early June). If you’re single, someone is attracted! Your charisma and energy are doubly strong Sunday/Monday – “lightning strikes!” Realize that you have to co-operate with a powerful, somewhat sluggish, but perhaps elevated individual. Grab the money Tuesday. A lucky week! Taurus April 20-May 20: Government agencies or “head office” steer your possibilities Sunday/Monday. Go with the flow. New circumstances, new trends are entering your private world – now to 2019. You might soon be working with or attending a large corporation or institution. Don’t be fazed by this – you have the skills required. If stress builds, learn to relax, play golf, yoga, whatever. Fifteen years of career worry ends; 15 years of “wide friendships” begins. Rest, lie low Sunday/Monday. Something lucky brews beneath the surface or behind the scenes before Thursday. Chase money Thursday onward. Gemini May 21-June 20: Wishes come true, especially Sunday, especially old wishes. Romance, or a flirty friendship, or happiness of another sort seems imminent – so does fulfilment around a legal, far travel, international or intellectual matter. But be realistic, cautious also – a “go slow” signal exists. Could mean “watch what you wish for,” or it might hint that wishes are fulfilled, but in a quiet or sober way. Your popularity is rising, friendly romance occurs, new friends come, especially Thursday onward. Optimism soars! (Retreat, rest Monday eve to midweek.) Fifteen years of “true career” begins.

Apr. 3 - Apr. 9 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before April 23. A jolt might come to your domestic or property arena Sunday. (This day is merely the centre of two months of “jolt.”) Be careful with electricity around the house this day. On another level, events can jump-start you into a whole decade of new (money-earning) property dealings, new landscaping, new security initiatives (e.g., RSPs) – despite the word “new” your success now will come from reprising a past goal, condition or contact. Believe in life, buy a home! Fifteen years of money anxiety end; 15 years of “chatty” friendship begin. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: You might make a lively new friend this week. This person will not become a life-mate (or not a good one) but you can have lots of fun together. (The problem: a sadness or sombre streak in this person is a clue indicating their ability/tendency to restrict you or to connect too easily to your hidden side.) Despite this, real love is likely. Don’t start any new projects, especially in communications, paperwork or travel, before April 23.Your luck will come from past contacts, and it could be very bright luck! Be restful midweek. Romance, creative surges Thursday onward. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Start nothing new before April 23: deal with past or ongoing projects and relationships. A money, income or possession situation could hold three things (all of some): great luck, career import and “the future” of your earnings (for eight years). This last is highlighted Sunday, when a “jolt” might accompany it. If you can get past a certain skepticism about your own work or your own goals, this jolt could represent a splendid new path in earnings. (This path likely represents working with management or in government, large bureaucracies, charities or institutions.) A lucky week! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
