We’ll all miss you, Edgar Tributes pour in for centenarian who had become an iconic figure in community BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Longtime newspaper man and beloved Delta storyteller Edgar Dunning passed away suddenly last Saturday. Just three months shy of his 101st birthday, Dunning enjoyed a weekly meal with friends at a local restaurant shortly before he was discovered in his car in the Trenant Park parking lot, apparently succumbing to a heart attack. Still writing a column for the Delta Optimist and maintaining an active social schedule, Dunning’s passing was met with great sadness and even shock despite his advanced years. Having a sharp mind and memory, and amazingly vigorous for a centenarian, he was a highly respected journalist as well as endearing figure in the community he loved and resided in almost his entire life. Dunning was born in Elbow, Saskatchewan on Jan. 7, 1910, arriving in Ladner as a 12-year-old when his father started the Delta Optimist in 1922. Admired by many for his honesty, professionalism, warmth and humour, Dunning was more than just a longtime resident. He was an icon, involved in the community and an integral part of its rich historical fabric. Dunning’s numerous awards over a well-lived life include the first Freedom of the Municipality in 2004 as well as Citizen of the Year and a lifetime achievement award from the Delta Chamber of Commerce. Even as a centenarian the awards kept coming and this year he received a B.C. Community Achievement Award and the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association’s Eric Dunning Integrity Award.
Despite all the accolades, he was never comfortable with tributes or the limelight. His daughter Susan Darlington described her father as a keen life-long learner as well as a funny and amazing dad. Dunning enjoyed travelling, often writing about his travels with his wife Elsie,

eral manager of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association, said Dunning was an important figure in the industry. Affleck said when he wrote about the history of the news game Dunning was helpful and straight forward, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since the veteran newsman was “liv-
made to the association, to see him give back to the kids he inspired every year.” Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said he was as a friend not just to her but to Delta as well. “To me, Edgar was just an absolutely consummate gentleman who had an astounding memory and great talent and commit-

Darlington also enjoyed road trips with her father, including a recent visit to Whistler to check out the Olympic sites and excursions earlier this year to Prince Rupert and Alberta. There was also talk of a trip to the Yukon. Dunning’s granddaughter, Brianna Darlington, recalled some lighthearted moments during their visit to Ottawa this summer when Dunning met the Queen. Susan said her dad was still a going concern. “He wasn’t planning to
“Everybody who knew and met Edgar will miss him, miss his wit and humour and insight,” Cuthbert said of Dunning, the museum’s first president. Historian Gwen Szychter said she was saddened that “a light illuminating Delta’s past has departed our landscape.” She recalled how much of a gentleman and how helpful he was when she met him at the Delta Archives 25 years ago when she was just starting her career as a historian. George Affleck, gen-
ing history.” “For the industry, he showed up at every single scholarship luncheon we had for the students the association gives scholarships to. He would always stand up and do a speech, usually a hilarious story about his career and always a different story in his huge booming voice,” Affleck said. “The students were not only inspired but were blown away by his energy. His was so lucid and so relevant with the kids, so for me that’s one of the most important contributions he
ment to his community,” she said. “He was honoured by his neighbours, by his community, by everybody who met him. I think with his legacy of stories and history he really wanted to leave us an understanding that community is really all about the people and the lives they bring. His beloved Delta just shines with that. It’s about the people who live here and the memories we make as we move along through life,” Huntington said. “I was really set back even though you expect
something like that with a man of his age ... We’ve lost a great man.” Delta North MLA Guy Gentner said Dunning made a big difference for Delta. “Edgar’s presence was felt throughout all of Delta, including North Delta,” Gentner said. Dunning’s razor-sharp memory for historical details was accompanied by charm and a wry smile, all matched by his quick wit. One example was his request fulfilled by the Delta Concert Band, which he helped form and enjoyed watching practice. Tuba player Jim Love said they agreed to play a few songs for Dunning that he said he wanted performed at his wake “in case his hearing when he passes isn’t so good.” The band plans to have a special tribute event for Dunning. Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta council said those he worked and spent time with cherished Dunning’s jovial, good-humoured personality, and his personal and intimate knowledge of Delta’s history and ability to share it was truly touching. “Edgar’s lifelong dedication to the betterment, heritage and preservation of Delta is remarkable — a legacy that will be remembered.” The Delta Archives facility currently under construction at the former courthouse will include the Edgar Dunning Reading Room, Jackson said at Monday night’s council meeting. “Edgar, I’ll miss you,” she said. “We’ll all miss you.” The date and location of a celebration of Edgar Dunning’s life are still being worked out. His family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation.

Edgar Clesson Dunning was born in Elbow, Saskatchewan, on Jan. 7, 1910. At the invitation of the Delta Board of Trade, Edgar’s father, Vincent Dunning, came here to start this newspaper in 1922. The community had been without a newspaper since the folding of the Delta Times a few years earlier. The new newspaper was initially housed in the former saloon of the Ladner Hotel, Edgar would recall in some of his numerous columns on Delta’s history. Edgar’s mother, Gertrude Dunning, took over as publisher when Vincent Dunning left in 1923, becoming the first female publisher of a B.C. weekly newspaper. In an interview just prior to his 100th birthday this year, Edgar noted just 500 copies of the first issues were printed because of the small population in what was a relatively isolated farming and fishing community at the time. Edgar, who had two younger brothers, Bill and Eric, graduated from King George High School in Ladner and organized numerous school reunions in the decades that followed. This year he became the first member of the Delta Secondary alumni. In his younger years, Dunning worked in central B.C. at the Premier Gold Mine before ending up at a newspaper in Prince Rupert. He moved back to Ladner in 1930 to learn the printing business and work for the Optimist. He was an editor and reporter, a printer and pressman, as well as bill collector, taking over as publisher in 1942. He sold part interest of the independent paper in 1964 to the Bexley family and the remainder in 1980. Dunning continued to write at an age when most people retire and eventually resumed his long-running Rambling column in the Optimist. He joined the B.C. Weekly Newspapers Association in 1931 and
was its youngest president. He also served as director of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association and was chairman of the B.C. Weekly Newspaper Advertising Bureau. In 1961 he was appointed editor of the Pacific regional edition of CBC Radio’s Neighbourly News, a program that ran for 26 years. Following the death of his brother Eric in 1971, Dunning assumed the duties of executor of his brother’s estate, which included the Coquitlam Herald and Maple Ridge Gazette, where he was active in managing.
Edgar Dunning in 1961. Also active in Delta life, Dunning was a former president of the Delta Board of Trade, now the Delta Chamber of Commerce. Dunning was also one of the founding members of the Delta Historical and Museum Society, and its first president when the museum opened with much fanfare in the old municipal hall building in Ladner in 1969. He was involved with many groups, including the Kinsmen Club of Ladner, which he helped form in 1935, becoming its president four years later. In 1941 and 1942, Dunning held the position of historian on the national executive of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs of Canada. He was named a life member of the club in 1961 and last year received Kin Canada’s highest honour when was named a Hal Rogers Fellow. He was also one of the founders of the Delta Community Band Society. Dunning married Elsie Maria Bowing (1916-1998) in 1942 and they had two children, Susan and Gene. He had three grandkids and one great grandchild.

When it came to offering advice or any secrets to his youthfulness, the centenarian credited his tenacious thirst for knowl-

Veteran newsman and historian Edgar Dunning gained as much recognition for his vigorous longevity as for his journalistic accomplishments. When asked about the famous, as well as the not so famous, that shaped Delta’s history, one could expect a detailed and perhaps even whimsical account. In an interview at his Ladner condo prior to his 100th birthday this past January, Dunning recalled in crisp detail the names, places and dates in his own story. Noting his mother was a strong and highly intelligent woman, he said he didn’t know he’d be following in her footsteps and end up in the news game. “I was playing drums in dance orchestras back in
those days. I had learned the basic principles of printing in the old letter pressstyle of printing. By 1930 when I got back to Ladner, my mother had purchased a Linotype (machine) while I was away and she never learned to operate it, so I spent some time learning it,” Dunning recalled. In his long-running Rambling column (renamed The Southwest Corner for a few years), which he began writing in the early 1950s, he offered book reviews, submitted limericks and true stories about his travels, as well as Delta’s people and places long gone. He had an uncanny knack for making intricate details and historical facts captivating as the reader got a glimpse of what life was like long ago. The fact Dunning witnessed a good chunk of that history provided his col-

umns with a more intriguing perspective. An inspired Mayor Lois Jackson, describe him as “Delta’s living treasure.” At his 100th birthday celebration at municipal hall this year, Dunning the storyteller was in his element as the audience enjoyed his unscripted and lighthearted A Conversation With Edgar presentation. He talked about some of the former councillors when he started working for the Optimist as a reporter, noting the politicians often enjoyed a few drinks at a local pool hall prior to their regular Saturday afternoon meetings, which inevitably became lively affairs. A smiling Dunning also joked with Jackson, noting he had a good story about her when she came onto council in the early 1970s, but the two laughed that they wouldn’t go there.

It may not be a new political idea, but it’s a proven one, and a town hall meeting planned for Monday, Nov. 8 in Tsawwassen is a first for Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. Sponsored by the independent MLA’s Delta South Constituency Association, the event will be held at the Tsawwassen Longhouse at 7 p.m. “It’s a great opportunity for people to meet Vicki and ask the questions that matter to them,” said association president Billy Mitchell. “It seemed like an
Halloween Can Spook Animals While Hallowe’en is fun for trick or treaters, it can be a scary and dangerous time for pets and farm animals. “Loud noises can cause animals to panic putting both pets and children in danger,” says Lorie Chortyk, Director of Community Relations for the BC SPCA. Farm animals are at risk too. Dogs or cats could dart into traffic or jump through windows, while frightened farm animals could run into barbed-wire fences or other obstructions. Dogs can also act out of character at the sight of strangers in costumes coming to your door. Keep your pet inside. Don’t feed candy and chocolate to pets as it can easily lead to health problems.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW “Did it or didn’t it?” Every Thursday afternoon, almost without fail, I’d get the call from Edgar. He would have just emailed his column and was inquiring to see if it had made its way over. “The blasted thing says it didn’t go through,” he would invariably lament. It’s true, Edgar never had an unkind word to say about anyone, but that rule didn’t necessarily apply to temperamental, inanimate objects like his not so trusty computer. Occasionally the attachment would go missing or the file would be blank, but the vast majority of times I was able to confirm the email had come through just fine, prompting a hearty laugh, and often a reference to the reliability of typewriters, from the other end of the line. That was typical Edgar: he respected the past and understood the importance of preserving it, but he very much lived in the present. When I think of Edgar, it’s not about how long he lived, which was indeed extraordinary, but how he lived that life. His sense of adventure and his thirst for knowledge were unmatched and his lifestyle was busier than most people half his age. Combine that with a wonderful sense of humour, a non-judgmental attitude and an ability not to sweat the small stuff and you’ve got a recipe for a long and happy life. I remember driving him to our staff Christmas party a few years ago and he mentioned on the way home how he was feeling kind of tired. I figured that wasn’t unusual given it was late at night and he was in his mid-90s at the time, but I was quickly told age wasn’t the reason for the fatigue. It was, after all, his third Christmas party that week! Not many people can say they visited Prince Rupert, Ottawa, Whistler and Barons, Alberta (where the Dunnings lived prior to settling in Delta) all in the same year, but to do so in your 101st is quite remarkable. In the back of my head I knew he was a centenarian, but sometimes it was hard to compute when he didn’t act that way. Then again, Edgar was a pragmatic guy who realized he wasn’t going to live forever. Daughter Sue says he used to joke every morning that he had to check the obituaries in the newspaper to find out whether he needed to get dressed. Well, my old friend, that time to rest has come. Your obituary is now in print and your passing has left an enormous void in this community. You were an inspiration to a great many and you will be deeply missed. I am truly honoured to have been your friend.
Six-pack of topics, including some collaborative teachers DAN SOUTHARD
COMMUNITY COMMENT Happy Collaboration Day! In case you don’t know, Collaboration Day occurs on every other Wednesday with Delta teachers taking the first hour of the school day to collaborate, rather than the usual routine of, um ... undermining each other? I’m not celebrating today, though. Rather I’m lamenting the passing of the great Edgar Dunning. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. Without question, Edgar’s death is a tremendous loss for Delta, but the fact that he was able to stay mentally sharp and physically active for 100 years, and was spared any prolonged suffering, is worth celebrating. Still, Delta won’t be the same without our town sage. The recent NDP convention certainly didn’t lack interest. Clearly,
the knives are out for Carole James. I’m not surprised. While James does a lot of talking about leadership, her words ring hollow, like a teacher pretending to understand the material but actually reading from the textbook for the first time. As B.C.’s NDPers were pulling threads from their curiously frail tent, our federal government was pulling our application for a seat on the UN Security Council, as it became clear we would lose to Portugal. Portugal? Really? I mean, I like Nando’s as much as the next guy, but Portugal? I guess our contributions to the world just don’t measure up to those of Portugal, or Lebanon, Gabon and Uganda. Forget blaming Stephen Harper or Michael Ignatieff for our defeat, the UN is just a screwy operation. Heck, France is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. ’nuff said. The impacts of the HST are still being widely debated. Is it just me, or do Liberal assertions the HST won’t discourage people from eating at restaurants seem odd given that just a couple of years ago they claimed the carbon tax would discourage people from driving?
The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. So, which is it? Do taxes affect people’s spending habits and activities or not? The answer is “yes” to both. People change their habits for a short period of time, then absorb the new tax in their household budgets and continue on. It’s one of the reasons why our carbon tax is just a useless cash grab. Speaking of useless, Margret Trudeau was recently in Vancouver as part of her “I Can’t Believe People Will Pay To Hear Me Speak” tour. Once, when I was quite young, Mrs. Trudeau and Buckminister Fuller visited my elementary school. After uttering a few perfunctory words, Maggie passed the mic to Buckminister Fuller, then sat down and fell asleep. To be fair, brilliant as he was, Buckminister Fuller could have made a hyperactive chimp drowsy. I spent his entire speech trying to figure out if Buckminister was his name or his title. I’m still not sure. Hey, six topics in 500 words. That’s a personal record. I’d like to give credit to my fingers and brain for collaborating, and for doing so in a timely manner, thus negating the need to sacrifice time with my kids.

Pensioner supports introduction of fairest tax possible ends meet on a pension. I can’t believe how many people are against this tax, as it is one of the fairest taxes we can have. In fact, people who don’t use these items are subsidizing those who use them. For example, we can’t afford to go to restaurants so we are subsidizing the affluent people who can afford this luxury. It’s like robbing from the poor to feed the rich. I believe most of the peo-
ple against the HST are not aware of the benefits and the ones that are aware are extremely selfish as they want the poor people to help pay for their extravagant spending. In closing, I would like to say to the provincial government to keep up the good work and don’t let all the negativity sway its endeavour to keep the HST — the fairest tax possible. Doug Anderson

It is well-documented that millions of birds die each year as a result of collision with windows, especially when glass panels are located near habitat. Editor: Anyone who has heard the sickening “thud” of a bird flying head first into a window knows that plate glass presents a significant hazard to wildlife. It is therefore mystifying that Delta has approved the design and location of the Centennial Beach concession building with floor to ceiling windows enclosing an indoor seating area. The glass-enclosed café portion of the proposed building is within 75 metres

Editor: Re: 56th St. speeders keep cyclist on sidewalk, letter to the editor, Oct. 23 Jackie Sterling is so right. Traffic on 56th Street sets it own rules. I live near the town centre, so use the crosswalks on a daily basis. The speed limit and red lights must be seen as an inconvenience for motorists. I would suggest some Delta police resources be allocated to regular enforcement Doug Ellis
Don’t let area plan ruin neighbourhood Editor: I am writing to register my opposition to the Tsawwassen Area Plan. My home and my Camaro Drive neighbourhood exemplify the kind of single-family home people want to bring their kids up in, as I did. I have worked very hard my whole life to bring up my kids in a good neighbourhood and pay off my home. Now, when my hard-earned goal is finally close at hand, this plan pro-
poses to wrench away my security, ruin me financially and drive me from my home. For what reason? To allow developers to profit from my destruction? To replace a community of good, friendly, honest, hardworking people with condos that provide maximum profit to developers? What about families and their children? Look around at the condo developments in
Tsawwassen. Look at any new condo development anywhere. Where are the children supposed to play? No swing sets, no road hockey, no yards, no quiet, safe streets lined with trees exist at any of them. Nothing. Just shabbily built, unattractive boxes of strata council in-fighting, neighbour-squabbling, childrenunfriendly concrete. I know because I tried living in one with my kids for a year.
Editor: Our family has resided on 13B Avenue since 1979 (31 years). We are extremely upset and disappointed that Delta council is endorsing the rezoning of our neighbourhood to a fourstorey apartment district. We are not prepared to sit idly by and allow council to destroy our property values that we have built up over the years. Council members should not believe what the planning department is telling them, that our properties are run down and we challenge councillors to actually come to our area and view the quality of the residences and the many improvements area residents have continually made over the years. Renovation continues even as this is being written. Four homes within the area are under significant re-construction and one home was demolished and a new home built. The owners paid to the municipality fees for these permits, contributing to the Delta tax base and a resulting rise in property values. How can council, in

good conscience, support a change in property zoning and disregard the added improvements made to our neighbourhood to the total benefit of the Corporation of Delta? How can council not support the lifetime residents who live here and provide a stable neighbourhood? Why is our neighbourhood, similar to other neighbourhoods throughout Tsawwassen, earmarked for rezoning? Do we not also have a right to the enjoyment of our homes as presently zoned? Council must not cave in to developers who will destabilize the area through lot assembly and have no interest in the neighbourhood other than profit. We have supported Delta for many years, contributed not only tax dollars but also supported merchants and volunteered countless hours to community activities. Council must be our champion and say no to rezoning for our area. We hope to live in our home for many years to come. Gordon and Jacqueline Leighton

and leave only the unnecessarily large, unnecessarily pretentious and unnecessarily unaffordable single-family housing in Tsawwassen behind? Why? What is wrong with a community based on affordable single-family houses with nice yards and quiet streets like most of us grew up in? Isn’t that worth preserving for our children? I think it is. I hope Delta council does too. Pat Terfloth

Little boxes with granite countertops, underground parking, bylaws and AGMs can never replace our community. They do not, and will not, provide the kind of neighbourhood we have. Delta says it wants to attract young families? Our area of well-kept and newly-renovated homes provides some of the most affordable single-family housing in Tsawwassen. But Delta proposes to take that away, replace it with condos
Editor: Re: MLAs raise safety issues about truck trains using Delta roads, Oct. 9 Is Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta council acting on behalf of the public or simply pandering to the trucking industry? Thank goodness for Delta North MLA Guy Gentner keeping an eye on road safety at Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road and for Delta South MLA
Vicki Huntington who will, hopefully, help to stop the launch of a six-month pilot project for extra long trucking units to run from Deltaport to River Road. Do we have to experience even more accidents, tunnel blockages and inconvenience to commuters, to say nothing of the expense of “corner widening” to accommodate these vehicles? Joan Hetherington

The husband has taken up running. Again. This is good. But when the husband takes up running — as he usually does every six months or so, weeks after he’s fallen off the running bandwagon — something else happens. The husband begins to think. Bigtime. Again. This is good. And after all, when you’re a runner, you put one foot before the other. You look at the trees. And the houses. And the weeds growing out of the pavement. And you think. And then, if you’re like my husband, you enter the house, grab a water, cool off and make some big pronouncement. “I was thinking,” he will pant. “I was thinking — you know — while I was running — that — we ought to stop — eating meat. Like, tomorrow.” Running, for reasons that escape me, gives runners, well, pause for thought. Runners — at least, runners like my husband — do not simply pass the time by pondering their pace. They also ponder the bigger questions of life. “I was thinking,” the husband panted the other day,

Where & when does it take place? Monday night at the North Delta Recreation Centre. How often do you participate? Once a week and I am already registered for the same class starting in January. (I just love it!) How long have you been involved? I just started in September. Why did you get involved in this activity? I had been taking Pilates at Sungod Recreation Centre for the past year and loved it however I felt like I needed a change. I was excited to see that Delta offered Zumba because I had heard such phenomenal things about it. I have always wanted to get back into dance classes and thought that Zumba may be a way to satisfy my dance and fitness needs. What do you like best about this activity? I love to dance and now that I have a family and a career, there is less opportunity to go out dancing. There were several classes to choose from so I was able to find one that fit into my family’s schedule. It’s a lot of fun, the instructor is phenomenal, the work out is hard but over before you know it. I also love that the work-out is scheduled as I am more likely to work out if I have paid for regularly scheduled classes than leaving it up to me to schedule it. It’s easy to find excuses to avoid working out when you have a very busy family. How does it benefit your life? Being active is very important to me and my husband (who is a fire fighter) for ourselves, and as a family. It is also very important to me that my daughters see their mother as active. They are very young (seven & four) so I want activity to be second nature to them. It is also a great stress reliever. I also love that a workout is good for your spirit as well as your body. It’s great to see women of all ages working out together and smiling while doing it. What other things do you do to keep active? Bikram Yoga, at home workout DVD’s, swimming, snow skiing, running (trained for and ran the Sun Run for the first time this year) gardening. For more information on other ways to be active in Delta, call Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604.946.3300 or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca.

Three Delta students receive scholarships from Envision For Rohit Singla, Julia Baum and Vanessa Egan, good grades and hours of volunteer work have paid off as the recent Delta high school grads were chosen out of almost 100 applicants to receive a $2,000 Envision Financial Education Award. Each year Envision awards 16 scholarships to secondary and post-secondary students throughout the province. The selection committee chose the winners based on their community involvement and strong academic performance. According to Envision president Bev Brown, the scholarship program is a valuable way of encouraging students to maintain their academic and community responsibilities. “This year’s scholarship winners are exceptional leaders who deserve to have their achievements recognized. As an organization we’re very to proud to help these students with their tuition costs, and we hope they continue making a difference in the lives of
others.” • Straight-A student Rohit Singla helped organize and run the 30-Hour Famine at South Delta Secondary, raising more than $7,000 on behalf of World Vision. Singla is now attending UBC, where he is studying applied sciences. • Julia Baum is taking physiology at the University of Alberta and intends to become a pediatrician. Baum has been volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada since 2007, a commitment she intends to continue while studying in Alberta. Baum has also volunteered at Delta Hospital where she led the Saturday baking program for seniors living in residential care. • Delta Secondary graduate Vanessa Egan volunteered with a number of student clubs, including student council, the Environment Club, International Friendship Association, Gay/Straight Alliance and grad council. Egan is currently studying at the University of Victoria.

Seniors put art on display in exhibition at KinVillage
Approximately 70 watercolour paintings will be on display at KinVillage Community Centre on Saturday. The art is the product of students that attend the watercolour painting course at the seniors centre. “It is a great opportunity for the students to display their art. We are delighted that KinVillage is able to showcase local talent,” said John Lusted, director of recreation at the centre. Irene Jenkinson is the art instructor and her experience goes back for many years. “I used to teach children and now I teach seniors,” she said. “It is very reward-
ing. There is a lot of enthusiasm and creativity on the part of the seniors. A person is never too old to learn and I have seen my students grow in art and gain confidence in their abilities.” She said that as students learn different techniques, the more rewarding painting becomes. They also learn to really look at their subjects and see beyond the obvious, she said. The gallery showing is a special event, added Jenkinson. Appetizers will be served and the bar will be open. Paintings will be on sale at the event, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at KinVillage, 5430-10th Ave., Tsawwassen.

In Memory of Edgar Dunning Delta is mourning the loss of Edgar Clesson Dunning who passed away on October 23, 2010 at the age of 100. Edgar Dunning was an active member of our community who devoted much of his life to serving Delta. Edgar Dunning was the first recipient of Delta’s Freedom of the Municipality Award which he received in 2004 as part of Delta’s 125th Anniversary. It’s almost time for some spooky fun at Family Fright Fest. Set for tomorrow from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the annual event includes a host of hair-raising activities. South Delta Secondary Equinox Theatre students will transform the McKee Heritage House into Bates Motel. Once through the “motel,” the Halloween festivities continue at the adjacent McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre where seniors have created phantasmagorical trick or treat doors. Next door, the Wintemute Boys & Girls Club will have a Mad Scientist Lab and the adjacent Ladner Pioneer Library will host a spooky story time as well as crafts and a photo corner. Admission is free to all the activities. Ladner’s 47th Avenue will be closed to traffic between Arthur Drive and 51st Street from 4 to 8 p.m. to allow for street activities, which will include live music, face painting, popcorn, hay rides, crafts and more. It’s not the only

The silhouette this season is clean and neat. Pulling off the New Chic, as this trend is called, is easier said than done. It takes a minimalist approach, which means less is more. Each piece counts and should have an element of style. Although black is popular, there are injections of colour that can excite your fall wardrobe. There is definitely a waistline this season. Belts are not as edgy, they are a part of the outfit that contributes to a curve of the body. Jackets, blouses and dresses come in a variety of cuts and fits with a hemline that falls either above or below the natural waistline. The new waistline is flexible and forgiving. The silhouette is long and slim with a few slight curves. There are no extreme lines this season. When the waistline is cropped high, the bust line looks rounder. This is not an A-line shape as skirts or pants are tailored from skinny to fitted. This streamlined silhouette includes shoulders that are bigger. They are not pointy, yet they stand out with a rounded finish. This is the new trend with all jackets and coats. Don’t be surprised if you see shoulder pads. The emphasis of the silhouette is on top, from the shoulder to the flexible waistline. The hip line is tapered, almost nonexistent. Although black is very popular this season, you need a pop of colour. Camel is a classic colour that you are going to see everywhere. Try a suiting look with a white soft blouse, black shoes and a thin belt and you are styling. Tweeds are stylish and should have camel as their primary colour. Coats and jackets are the easiest way to add camel to your wardrobe. Camel chunky cardigans are going to be very popular this fall. Another classic colour is grey, which will work for you exactly like camel. It is also a clean look. Both colours are not dark, which will lighten up any black pieces. If you want to be a little cheeky, silver is very trendy in fabrics and threads, but not too much. Navy and royal blue are also in fashion this season. Electric blue is the trendier version. Electric blue matches with black, camel and grey so it is an easy piece to add to your wardrobe. Because it is a bold colour, try it in small doses until you get used to it. It looks great in patterns like checks, stripes and tweeds Need more colour? Scarlet red, mustard yellow and plum are your go-to colours. They are trendy and vibrant. These colours are on everything from shoes to scarves. There is a sense of confidence this season in having the ability to consolidate different pieces of your wardrobe into the New Chic. Fashion should look like it comes natural to you.

The Fraser Health Authority is making overtures again about implementing pay parking at Delta Hospital. Representatives from the health region recently made a presentation to civic politicians about
the issue but councillors were cool to the idea. Delta Hospital is the only one in the health region to not have pay parking. The Optimist asked:
Should there be pay parking at Delta Hospital?
John Maloney No, no way under any circumstances.
Ray Beutel No. I think if you’re visiting someone, just having the hassle of ... it’s too much of an emotional time to be worrying about throwing another toonie into the meter.
Sheila Somner I’ll go for not to be. Especially for people who are visiting people in the hospital.
Dori Bidulka By principle I’d have to say no, but every other hospital does it.
Last week we asked you:
How will the Canucks do this season? • 9.43 per cent said they’ll win the cup. • 39.62 per cent said they expect a deep playoff run.
• 39.62 per cent said they’ll get bounced early in the playoffs. • 11.32 per cent said they’ll miss the playoffs.

You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Andy Koechl No. [They] shouldn’t have pay parking at the hospital.

Big win over Sands puts South Delta in position to earn opening round bye MARK BOOTH
The South Delta Sun Devils have climbed all the way out of an early season hole and are now in position to earn an opening round bye for next month’s provincial playoffs. The “AA” varsity football team completed an outstanding homestand with a 21-16 victory over the Sands Scorpions to improve to 3-1 in conference play. A win over the Hugh Boyd Trojans Friday in Richmond, coupled with Seaquam losing to unbeaten John Barsby, will lock up a spot in the provincial quarter-finals. That scenario almost seemed like a pipe dream when the Devils opened the season with losses to Abbotsford Christian and Barsby. “We knew we could play a lot better than that,” said Devils head coach Ray Moon. “The players had their own meeting, so did the coaches and we came out refocused.” After taking care of Seaquam and Parksville,

the Sun Devils were facing a desperate Sands team that had not lived up to pre-season expectations. Still, it was the same North Delta opponent that dismantled them in last year’s playoffs and once again enjoyed a considerable size advantage. The hosts overcame it by making use of their speed as quarterback Mitch Rushton hooked up with Chris Adams and Josh Cochrane for first quarter majors. Sands got on the board with a touchdown on a punt return and the Devils answered with their own big play on special teams. Ray Calderwood returned the ensuing kickoff deep into Sands’ territory, setting up Rushton’s third TD toss of the afternoon — a 15yard strike to Cochrane. The 14-point cushion was enough for the South Delta defence which enjoyed its best outing of the season. Twice, the unit turned back Sands at the goalline, including the final play of the opening half. Sands quarterback Jamie Al-abed was sacked a whopping 11 times.

All-provincial lineman Taylor Harrison had a memorable final home game — recording six tackles, four sacks, two knockdowns, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Travis McDonald added five tackles and two sacks, while Team B.C. linebacker Riley Jones finished with nine tackles. “Everyone stepped up to the plate on defence for
us,” added Moon. “Our only concern is why we are not scoring points in the second half. It’s something we need to figure out.” The only other concern was a knee injury to
Grade 12 standout Ray Calderwood. The hope is the team’s leading rusher can enjoy three weeks of rest and be ready for the playoffs should the Devils win Friday.

South Delta Sun Devils Riley Jones wraps up Sands quarterback Jamie Al-abed as teammate Taylor Harrison closes in during a goalline stand at the end of the first half in a 21-16 victory last Saturday in Tsawwassen. The two seniors, who played on Team B.C. this summer, had huge performances in the final home game of their high school careers.
South Delta Sun Devils Grade 9 girls volleyball team continued its strong season by capturing its own invitational for the first-time ever. Fresh off an impressive showing in Kamloops the previous weekend, the Devils hosted a number of schools last Saturday at SDSS. The home team got past Earl Marriott in the semi-finals then defeated the favoured Seaquam Seahawks in two straight in the championship match. The result came on the heels of the
Seahawks defeating the Devils just two days earlier in league play. Twin standouts Nicole and Megan McNamara were named co-tournament MVPs. The South Delta roster also includes Lauren Shirley, Christine Howlett, Samantha Loiselle, Emily Lawson, Laura Watt and Anika Klassen. The team is coached by Heather Loiselle. The Sun Devils Junior team also hosted a tournament and just came up short in its bid to advance to the final.

Ladner Shamrocks celebrate their second place finish at the Richmond Thanksgiving Tournament
Ladner Shamrocks U15 boys soccer team managed to pull off a second place finish at the annual Richmond Thanksgiving Tournament. The boys went undefeated through the weekend, playing four games. They managed a 2-1 victory over the Richmond Strikers in a very early Saturday morning game. In the afternoon, the Shamrocks squeaked out a 1- 1 draw against a hard-fighting Port Moody Titan team. Sunday morning saw them play local rival Ladner Storm who are a formidable opponent. Both teams know each other’s strengths and weakness. The end result was another 1-1 draw. The Shamrocks then closed out the tournament by playing the Richmond Panthers to a 1-1 tie. A bad bounce led to a disallowed goal
for Ladner. The unfortunate call left the locals two points out of top spot and the “Lucky Leprechaun” had disappeared for a minute. However, the boys should still be proud of themselves. They are a mixture of two teams and it can take a while to get comfortable with each other’s game. Dennis Garvey, Bill Reid and Clive Mckeen are pleased to be coaching a team that seems to be focused and do well at everything they are challenged with. The Shamrock players are Gurpaul Athwal, Ben Cupiol, Spencer Gravey, Amrick Gill, Haakon Hansen, Jonathan Lacerte, Cody Naili, Hector OrellanaBoucher, Connor Paxton, Christoper Powroznik, Cody Primore, Jake Rudnick, Andrew Sair, Brad Thomas and Jessie Uppal. Thanks to Joel and Nathan for helping out over the weekend.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Travis Lulay - 14 I was born and raised in Salem, Oregon and live there during the off-season with my wife Kimberly along with my parents, siblings and extended family, who still call the area home. I’ve been around football since I was a young kid and I decided pretty early on that I wanted to train hard and get accepted into university so I could play at the college level and ultimately pursue a professional career. You could say that I’ve been successful in reaching my goals so far! I spent the 2002 to 2005 seasons at Montana State, where I set a school record for career passing yards, led my team in rushing yards during my senior season, and concluded my college career ranked fourth alltime in rushing yards and touchdowns – the highest total for any quarterback at Montana State. While I’ve spent much of the last several years with a number of different professional football teams, I’m happy to have had these opportunities to play the game I love. Whether it’s stints in Seattle with the Seahawks of the NFL, in New Orleans with the Saints or moving overseas to play with NFL Europa’s Berlin Thunder, I know these experiences have all contributed to making me the person and player I am today. With these experiences in mind, I remember what it’s like to be a young athlete with a dream of playing at the professional level which is a big reason why taking part in the Lions’ community initiatives is so important to me. Whether it’s acting as a guest coach at a local community football practice or helping run a Timbits Camp at our practice facility, it’s a rewarding feeling to know I could be inspiring a young person to pursue their goals in sports and in life.

DUNNING
Edgar Clesson
January 7, 1910 ~ October 23, 2010 Edgar was born on January 7, 1910 in Elbow, Saskatchewan to Vincent Clesson Dunning and Gertrude Agnes Hastey. He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie Marie (Bowing) Dunning, in 1998 and leaves behind two children, Susan (Dunning) Darlington, Gene Dunning, grandchildren Brianna, Jordan, Damian and great grandson Brennan as well as many other family members from the Dunning and Bowing clans. In his 101st year he was still busy writing, travelling and spending time with friends and family. This year he was honoured in many ceremonies for his accomplishments. He passed away with ease while resting in his car after a breakfast with friends. A man dear to so many, who gave so much to his community of Delta; Edgar we will miss you; your kindred spirit; articles in the Optimist and infectious sense of humour. From 1935 to 2010 Edgar worked for the Delta Optimist as Publisher, Co-Publisher and as a Columnist. He was a member of the Kinsmen Club of Ladner, the B.C. Weekly Newspapers Association and Delta Board of Trade, to name a few. From 1962-1987 he was CBC radio’s host of Neighbourly News. There are too many achievements, friends and family to name. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation. Rest in peace Edgar, your memory will be our blessing and your enthusiasm for life an inspiration to many.
