Two Liberal leadership candidates visited Delta South Monday and both made overtures to independent MLA Vicki Huntington to join the governing party. George Abbott made a campaign stop at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner late in the afternoon, addressing a crowd of local Liberals, including a few who had dropped by Christy Clark’s campaign stop in Tsawwassen an hour earlier. In the back of the crowd to hear what Abbott had to say was Huntington, who had also dropped by Clark’s campaign appearance

at Brown’s Social House. During his meet and greet with attendees, Abbott approached the independent MLA saying he’d like for her to seriously consider joining his fold if he wins the leadership race. Saying he believes the Liberals can not only win back Delta South but also take Delta North, Abbott would go on to make an overture to Huntington during his address to the audience. He told the Optimist his government would reach out and listen to the people when it comes to policy decisions, which Huntington has advocated. “I think the current MLA is a very good person and I would

hope she would consider joining our caucus during this term. It’s something I’d certainly want to talk to her about and I think she’d make a great contribution,” he said.

When asked about Abbott’s remarks, Huntington’s only response was to smile and note the candidate has always seemed like a reasonable man and a consensus builder. Clark wasn’t as forceful in her courting of Huntington, saying

that’s something the caucus would have to discuss. “I can say, personally, Vicki has done a good job representing this riding but it’s tough when you’re not part of a team,” Clark said. “Part of my pitch to Vicki, we are going to be a democratic government that’s going to allow MLAs to represent their communities in Victoria and sometimes that means disagreeing ... I think you should be able to make sure communities are heard within the party system.” Clark said she intends to change the culture in Victoria so that government listens to communities. Archives finally in new home

Facility in old courthouse will house historical documents for municipality as well as museum and archives BY

Edgar Dunning wasn’t there in person but he was certainly there in spirit as a large crowd gathered last Friday afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room. Located on the ground floor of the former courthouse next to municipal hall in Ladner, the new facility provides state-of-the-art storage of Delta’s historic documents and photos. The climate-controlled environment will house municipal materials as well as those belonging to the Delta Museum and Archives Society. The facility was named in part to honour Dunning, one of the founding members of the museum society and its first president. The former Delta Optimist editor and publisher, regarded as Delta’s most trusted storyteller, passed away last fall so didn’t get the chance to see the opening of the facility that bears his name. Family members as well as many dignitaries and civic and provincial officials were on hand for the grand opening on what would have been Dunning’s 101st birthday. Several council members, including Mayor Lois Jackson, got into the spirit by wearing costumes from yesteryear. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz, who doubled as master of ceremonies in a fancy suit with top hat, said a modern archives facility had long been talked about. The public archives was made a reality thanks to joint federal and provincial funding for “shovel ready” projects last year.

birthday was arranged quite a while ago, prior to Dunning’s passing, Jackson said he was very much looking forward to the opening. Dunning left Delta with a lasting legacy and was at Friday’s event in spirit, she said. Jackson said she remem-

from the audience, Abbott made a speech explaining his platform and desires for the Liberal government, noting it has done some good work when it comes to the economy but has “a huge job” in rebuilding public confidence. His platform also includes moving up the HST referendum to June 2011. A campaign handler noted Abbott is to return to South Delta on Jan. 17 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Clark, the 45-year-old former radio talk show host

who is trying to re-enter the political arena, gave an enthusiastic address, going over her reasons for entering the race, including a pledge to deliver a “families first” policy of government as well as keeping the NDP out of power. Despite a strong performance when it comes to economic policies, she said, the government needs to fundamentally change. “One of the things I’m really passionate about is changing the way the government does business ... I think the premier has to

allow cabinet ministers to really do their jobs, to bring their imaginations and ideas to the table because you’re never as smart with one smart person as 20 people in the room. “I think we have to let caucus members do their jobs and not forget what a caucus member’s job is. A caucus member’s job is not to go to Victoria, get their marching orders from the premier and come back to the communities and tell them what the premier wants.” Clark had former TV

news anchor Pamela Martin also address the crowd at Brown’s Social House to explain why she joined her team. Clark was first elected in 1996 and served as opposition critic in various portfolios. After the Liberals won in 2001, she was appointed minister of education and deputy premier in Gordon Campbell’s government. The Liberal leadership vote takes place Feb. 26. Kevin Falcon, Mike de Jong, Ed Mayne and Moira Stilwell are also vying to be the next premier.

Jackson read some of the meeting minutes during the grand opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room last Friday. The $675,000 project saw $450,000 come from the Provincial/Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, while the remaining $225,000 was paid by Delta. B.C. Sport and Cultural Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux told the audience the project would

I don’t think they were angry about the hospital issue. There were some major improvements to Delta Hospital under my tenure as

Anne Peterson, chair of Delta’s Heritage Advisory Commission, noting Dunning was still a member of her commission until he died, said everyone, including the municipality and museum and archives society, were in agreement over having an archives, but it took timing, funding and a proper location. Delta Museum and Archives Society president Claudette Hayward said the archives is a “tremendous collaboration” between Delta and her society. Hayward, who knew Dunning for 45 years, then presented an old book, recently donated by longtime resident Tony Wideski, which has the minutes of the very first meeting of Delta council held on Jan. 12, 1880, as well as meetings through to March 1887. Jackson read a few hand-written paragraphs on what transpired at that first meeting so long ago. Wideski told the Optimist he had the book in storage for over 40 years, having received it from someone who worked for the Optimist long ago. “It’s a long story,” he quipped when asked about the history of the book. Friday’s event also had plaque unveiling and, of course, a mandatory ribbon cutting. The facility was described as “one-stop shopping” for people researching the history of Delta and its citizens.

I know that’s been an issue in the past year as well but the demographics of the school population is shifting again.” Before he took questions

Teen cancer fighters to lose locks BY

JESSICA KERR

Two local teens are losing their locks later this week to raise money to help in the fight against cancer. Cassidy Keen and Bailey Keith, both 14 and Grade 9 students at Delta Secondary, are planning to shave their heads on Friday in return for donations for ovarian cancer research. The two teens started the fundraising initiative in honour of someone close to them. Keen’s grandmother died from ovarian cancer last year and a close Keith family friend has been battling the disease for several years. Hoping to raise $5,000, Keen and Keith have been collecting donations through the Canadian Cancer Society. They will be charging admission by donation to the head shaving event, which will take place during lunch hour at the school. They are also planning on selling bracelets inscribed with the words “faith, hope, love” to continue raising funds. So far, they have raised just over $2,000. Donations can be made online through www.cancerevents.kintera. org/faithhopelove.

Gentner hasn’t ruled out bid for NDP leadership Delta North MLA watching to see who else declares sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta North New Democrat MLA Guy Gentner continues to weigh his options before deciding whether he’ll run for his party’s leadership. Gentner, who attended the opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room last Friday, was asked by the Optimist what his plans are now that a few candidates have come forward seeking the top job. Last week, Nicholas Simons, one of the 13 NDP MLAs that banded together to drive out leader Carole James, became the first member of the socalled “Baker’s Dozen” to announce their candidacy. MLA John Horgan announced his bid for the leadership this week while MLA Harry Lali has already declared. The first person to declare was marijuana activist Dana Larsen, who ran for the NDP in the 2008 federal election. Larsen secured the endorsement of Tommy Chong, one half of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Gentner said he wants to see who else might run and then weigh his options. In particular, Mike Farnworth and perhaps Adrian Dix, both of whom would be considered high profile in media circles, were also expected to throw their hats

in the ring this week. As to whether he’d still run, Gentner smiled and quipped, “Let’s put it this way: If (CBC News anchor) Gloria Macarenko decides not to run, then I’ll have to weigh my options.” Gentner was jokingly referring Liberal leadership hopeful, and radio talk show host, Christy Clark, who has former TV news anchor Pamela Martin signed on to her campaign. There is also the possibility the NDP must choose a female leader due to the party’s constitution. “We’ll see in the next couple of weeks what happens,” said Gentner. Gentner said he supported a leadership vote because that’s what his constituents desired. The pressure on James, though, forced the NDP leader to step down rather than fight for her job. The leadership vote will be held April 17. Having served on Delta council from 1999 to 2005 under the TriDelta banner with Mayor Lois Jackson, before making the jump to provincial politics, Gentner’s name has surfaced as a possible leadership candidate. Last year a website at www.hesourguy.weebly. com appeared carrying the title He’s Our Guy! Draft Guy Gentner for BCNDP Leader.

Open House! Free classes and posture clinic Saturday, January 15th Schedule

Guy Gentner The site’s anonymous creators, calling themselves The Committee to Draft Guy Gentner for BCNDP Leadership, said the party needs to present another credible and progressive alternative. When the website appeared, Gentner didn’t want to comment on its content, other than to note he was surprised about the site and had no knowledge who’s behind it. On another topic, Gentner recently visited jailed B.C. marijuana activist Mark Emery. Gentner was also visiting family in the area, so decided to see Emery in a Georgia prison, where the “Prince of pot” is serving five years for charges in connection with a marijuana seed business in Vancouver. Gentner said Emery is one of eight Canadians in the privately-run U.S. minimum security facility that has a population of mostly non-U.S. citizens.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It was a bittersweet day last Friday. The opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room has to be considered a significant milestone in the municipality’s history, a long overdue facility that will preserve the community’s historically important documents thanks to state-of-the-art environmental controls. However, it was sad indeed that the man whose name is now forever etched on the outside of the former courthouse and municipal hall wasn’t there to partake in the festivities on what would have been his 101st birthday. There’s no doubt Edgar would have been in his element, regaling the crowd with tales of the past while almost certainly downplaying his considerable involvement in the preservation of Delta’s history. He would have told a few jokes, perhaps a couple of “lies” (those stories he said that couldn’t be refuted because everyone involved was long gone) and left the audience marveling at his quick wit and retention of detail. I had seen variations of the performance many times over the years and it never failed to put a smile on my face, although I suspect that as much as I knew what he was doing as a centenarian was amazing, I had witnessed it so often I became somewhat immune to it. Inevitably, and thankfully, I would be reminded of how remarkable Edgar was by overhearing someone in the crowd say to their neighbour, “Did you know he’s 100?” I would chuckle to myself but also be grateful for the reminder of what we were experiencing. Sadly, it’s a treat that now only lives in my memory. I missed Edgar at last fall’s Delta Chamber of Commerce banquet, where he’d been a fixture for years, but last Friday’s archives opening would have been the first public event since his passing where he would have been front and centre, where we would have been treated to his humour, charm and zest for life. Edgar wasn’t necessarily comfortable being the centre of attention, but he played the part well. He had a way of communicating that was unmatched, teaching us the value of the past by making it come to life with a healthy dose of laughter. It was a nice gesture on Delta’s behalf to recognize Edgar by naming the reading room at the new archives after him. It was a fitting tribute to a man who did a great deal to enrich the lives of his fellow Deltans, particularly as it related to the history of this place. It’s just too bad the man of the hour wasn’t there to share it with the rest of us.

Securing our food production also key to region’s economy SYLVIA BISHOP

COMMUNITY COMMENT In the news of late, much has been made about the rising cost of food. Surging fuel prices and climate change are but two contributing factors. Think of Delta’s potato crop lost to last fall’s relentless rainy weather. Increased prices follow reduced supply and continuing demand. At the same time our local farmers were in despair over their crop loss, Metro Vancouver published a draft report titled Regional Food System Strategy, an attempt to provide information, goals and strategies to achieve local food security. The 36-page document is a very interesting read. For example, one of the goals is to create a Regional Farmland Trust whereby farmland purchased would be leased back to farmers, especially younger farmers that cannot afford the purchase price of Lower Mainland farms.

In an attempt to stave off development of farmland and ensure future generations of farmers, the trust would rely on the pool of resources from both the private and public sectors. The idea is not new. Richmond councillor Harold Steves has initiated discussions to establish a trust to purchase the Southlands. What do hens and chickens together with blueberries have in common? They are the top livestock and fruit crop products produced in Metro Vancouver. Top vegetable crop? No surprise — potatoes (when the weather doesn’t make them into mush). Barley is the top field crop and a beautiful example of it was in full display on the Southlands last fall. Elsewhere in the report, the economic importance of agriculture is highlighted. Did you know that one in eight jobs in the region are related to food production? That’s significant. B.C.’s food industry revenue is upwards of $35 billion annually. A large portion comes from Metro Vancouver. In third place behind Pitt Meadows and Langley Township, Delta has the largest amount of municipal land in the ALR at 56 per cent. A staggering 85 per cent of Pitt Meadows’ municipal land is

in the ALR with Langley Township at 76 per cent. So what does all this mean for us? It is heartening to know that Metro Vancouver has produced a report complete with goals and strategies to undertake what many people already understand: local food production must be secured. Our farmers must be supported and the importance of their industry is significant to the region’s economy. The next generation of farmers must have access to farmland and not all of those farms will be huge industrial operations. In fact, more than half the region’s farms are 10 acres or smaller. In comparison, the average B.C. farm size is 143 acres. Lastly, we must participate in the protection of farmland by vigorously insisting our politicians, at all levels, do so. In the campaign to protect farmland throughout the region, some developers and politicians attempt to marginalize those who speak out. Deriding efforts as whining, negative or parochial do not inform the discussions. We can now point to this draft report and say the goals to protect farmland, ensure food safety and food security are shared by the entire region.

January 12, 2011 The Delta Optimist A09 Letters to the Editor

Editor: Recently an elderly friend who is partially blind was hit by a car while crossing with the walk signal at the corner of 12th Avenue and 56th Street in Tsawwassen. She ended up in hospital with a broken shoulder. Why should this be a concern, you might ask, since it is not unusual for people to get hit crossing at marked crosswalks? I cross at this intersection on a regular basis and have observed what happens when cars are waiting to turn right on a red light while the green arrow is on

for left turning traffic. They wait, look and then finally, just as they decide to make their turn, the walk signal comes on for the pedestrians. Sometimes the driver notices the walk signal, but more often than not they make their turn, not even realizing they have just seized the right of way from the pedestrian who has also been waiting patiently. Occasionally someone gets hit or at least has to take evasive action. I know of several older people who will not even cross the street here if it is

dark or rainy because they are so afraid of being hit. They have all had close calls here, as have I. This part of Tsawwassen is filled with elderly people who are very vulnerable at this intersection. Mayor and council, would you please give serious consideration to making this a “No Right Turn on Red” corner before anyone else gets hurt or killed? If drivers knew they couldn’t turn right on a red light, then pedestrians would be much less likely to ever have a problem. Don Christie

Don’t subject more residents to lines Editor: Over the last few months several people have asked me to comment on the Tsawwassen Area Plan proposal to raise the density of housing along the power lines corridor. Over Christmas I finally saw a map showing the proposed areas that were included in the plan. Frankly, I am flabbergasted at the lunacy of this proposal.

Given all that the community went through over five years trying to find a reasonable compromise to the installation of overhead transmission lines, and considering all the science suggesting the application of the precautionary principle regarding the proven leukemia and other health effects of said lines, who could logically propose such a change in zoning? The single-family proper-

ties the lines presently go over is a higher density than responsible governments should accept, let alone a proposed fivefold increase in density. What thoughtless bureaucrat came up with this idea? I suspect they thought allowing three-storey homes next to the lines would hide them from the sight of others. Seems like this problem just won’t go away. Cecil Dunn

Night skies can be quiet

Editor: Re: Noise in ear of the beholder, Murphy’s Law, Jan. 8 I couldn’t agree more with your statement. I grew up less than three miles from a busy military jet airport. I serviced aircraft for a time, controlled and flew them for years. Apparently, I like aircraft noise but I realize not everyone falls into that category. However, I would like to help those who don’t. First, a baseline must be established: during what hours, and at what sound level, is aircraft noise acceptable? While YVR is a valuable asset, that doesn’t give it the right “to reign over us.” To put the solution into perspective, I suggest an overnight stay at Frankfurt International Airport Hotel attached to the airport ter-

minal building. At 9 p.m., all airport noise ceases and no extraneous sound can be heard until 6 a.m. I found it so quiet as to be spooky, but I awoke very refreshed. Frankfurt is the busiest airport in Europe during its hours of operation. So it can be seen that a strong local population-based organization can overcome the pressure of an airport operator to remain open to the disregard of the indigenous population. In other words, there is no excuse to launch or land a commercial flight that interferes with normal sleep time. It is the norm for European airports to close at night and thus the reason Europe-bound flights from North America schedule their arrivals to coincide with opening of the destina-

tion airport. Why does YVR, second busiest airport to Toronto Pearson (YYZ), not have similar nighttime flight restrictions? There is no reason except there is no effective local organization in the Lower Mainland to encourage YVR to conform. In theory, no aircraft may land or depart YYZ between 12:30 and 6:30 a.m., emergencies and police aircraft excepted. There is also a sliding scale significantly restricting nighttime operating hours of older, noisier jet aircraft. There are some remarkable organizers in the local area that could likely help bring real changes to YVR nighttime operations but complaining about every visible aircraft is divisive and contra effective to the solution. January 12, 2011 The Delta Optimist A11 Letters to the Editor

Editor: Please allow me to express my thanks and appreciation to those everyday heroes who ran Operation Red Nose for the ninth year. Carlene Lewall and her legion of volunteers from Delta Gymnastics would put a special ops team to shame with their precision, efficiency and organization. My thanks and appreciation also to the many volunteers that drove, navigated, dispatched, briefed, supplied food and coffee, managed the bookkeeping and wore that Rudy suit. My frequent teammate, Scotty, made the long hours between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. fly by swapping lies with me. My participation as escort driver for all nine nights was made possible by my personal sponsors: Morita Auto Body Services, Dawson Service, Jack and Nancy Buchan,

Jill Seymour, Otter Co-op Ladner Gas Bar and the Buck & Ear Pub, which covered the gas for the 2,400 kilometres I drove. Thank you as well to the Delta Optimist for printing my appeal. All the pub, restaurant and nightclub management encountered were very appreciative of Red Nose getting their clients safely home and promoted the service actively. Finally, and most importantly, I thank all the clients who phoned Operation Red Nose instead of trying to drive home impaired. Good call! One client said we had saved him $6,000 after we shepherded him through a roadblock. It was the first time he had used Operation Red Nose. More than that I cannot say, because what happens in Red Nose stays in Red Nose, but his generous

donation will go with all the others to support youth sports. Using Operation Red Nose has evolved in the public’s consciousness from an embarrassment (“I hope the neighbours don’t see us”) to a cool, responsible social act (“We’re riding home with the reindeer!”). Attitudes are definitely changing. People often approach me as I sit in my escort vehicle outside pubs and nightclubs to learn more about Red Nose, congratulate us for volunteering for the free service and take literature for their friends. One particularly encouraging observation: more and more young folks, men and women, are using Operation Red Nose. That, in itself, is sufficient motive to keep me driving. Thanks everyone. Happy New Year to you all. Ryan Lake

Gov’t looks after casinos, not community groups

Editor: I understand the B.C. Lottery Corporation has provided $400 million to the private, for-profit casino industry to help it with its bottom line. This has happened despite the fact the provincial government has

viciously slashed the amount of support available to the many community groups throughout B.C. that rely on gaming money. As the president of Delta Deas Rowing Club, an organization that has trained many young athletes for the national team, I am angry

this is occurring. Our club got virtually no support from the government last year and many groups got nothing. How does the government justify this payout to the casinos? Give us our money. Jane McCall

Rewarding teachers could well lead to inequitable situation in public schools

Editor: Re: Saip backs Falcon, teacher idea, Jan. 8 While it sounds right that the best teachers deserve to be the best paid, the idea is fraught with difficulty. How is to be avoided that the same incentives intended to achieve excel-

lent results do not become incentives to avoid difficult or under-achieving students; incentives to fill one’s class with academic stars? Monetizing excellence could lead to the sort of competition that leaves late bloomers and the most challenged with the

lesser teachers in the lesser schools. A public school should be a balanced place where students meet and engage with the broadest range of people. All students deserve and require access to the best teachers. Eric Keenleyside

LIVING MATTERS After much soul-searching and much discussion with family and friends, I have made a decision: I will not be running for the leadership of a political party. Yes, there are opportunities out there. Yes, our provincial political picture could use a little pick-meup. And yes, I have been encouraged to make a run for it. (Just two weeks ago, for instance, my youngest son told me: “I think you need to get a hobby.” If that isn’t an indication that he thinks I should head to Victoria, I don’t know what is.) But the fact is, I’ve come to decide — and again, after much heartfelt contemplation — that politics is not a hobby. It’s not something you do on Tuesdays after dinner. It’s something you do on Wednesdays, too — before AND after dinner. I have also come to realize — this, after a discussion with my husband and soul mate — that I may not be cut out for politics. I know: a stunning selfdiscovery. But the truth is, politicians — and especially political leaders — have to do things I may not be, well, particularly adept at. For one, they have to talk. A lot. In front of television cameras and microphones. And in town halls filled with people. Lots of people. Now I like to talk as much as the next person. But if someone put a microphone in front of my mouth, I think there’s a chance I might forget my train of thought and start to babble on about something unrelated to politics. Like meat loaf, say. Politicians also have to spend a lot of time in meetings. Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve never

been particularly fond of meetings — unless they involve a pub, some decent Chardonnay and four or five girlfriends who need to decide who brings what to an upcoming spa weekend. Politicians also need to know a lot about things. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. (And I’m not talking about how to remove red wine stains. I’m talking really IMPORTANT stuff. You know, like taxation and resource-management and education funding. Heck, they probably even need to know where Randy and Evi Quaid are holed up.)

Politicians also have to spend a lot of time in meetings. Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been particularly fond of meetings — unless they involve a pub, some decent Chardonnay and four or five girlfriends who need to decide who brings what to an upcoming spa weekend. And lastly — and this may have been the clincher in my ultimate decision — I came to the realization that politicians need to own more than four pairs of shoes (none of them runners) and a really decent business suit. In my case, the closet tends to run heavily in the direction of sneakers, and there isn’t a suit to be seen — let alone a briefcase. I suspect that no one, alas, would take seriously a candidate in track pants, Nikes and a sweatshirt that lost its luster 27 washings ago. So there you have it. The deliberations, I have to say, were nothing short of exhausting. But the decision, my friends, has now been made. It’s just so freeing to have it behind me.

History finds a home Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room officially open

Above: Dressed in period costume, parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz was master of ceremonies at the opening of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room. Left: Mayor Lois Jackson unveiled the plaque commemorating the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room with Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux. The federal and provincial governments’ support was instrumental in the development of the new archives for the public, said Jackson.

PHOTOS BY SANDOR GYARMATI More photos online at www.deltaoptimist.com Left: Located at the former courthouse next to municipal hall, the new archives was made a reality thanks to costsharing infrastructure funding from the federal and provincial governments.

Thousands of old documents and photos will be preserved in the new climate and light controlled archives facility.

Some of those taking part in the ribbon cutting of the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room were (front left to right) Edgar Dunning’s daughter Susan Darlington, Coun. Anne Peterson, Delta Museum and Archives Society president Claudette Hayward, Coun. Heather King and Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux. In the back are councillors Scott Hamilton and Robert Campbell.

Former Delta Optimist editor and publisher Edgar Dunning, who passed away last fall, may not have been there in person but was certainly there in spirit for the grand opening. The event was held on what would have been his 101st birthday. Dunning was an active member of the community and received several awards during his lifetime recognizing his efforts to preserve Delta’s heritage.

Steve said. After retirement, they decided to open a store featuring the UK products they loved. Almost a decade later, the couple now has three locations and is also a supplier for many other retailers. The McVitties opened the Tilbury location a year ago. They were looking for warehouse space to house the wholesale business and decided to convert the office space into a store. Steve said customers drive from all over to the Tilbury location to find their favourite British products. One of a big draws, he said, is the selection they offer. They don’t just carry crisps — they have Walker’s 01127344

For many customers, walking into The Celtic Treasure Chest British and European Imports is like taking a step back to another time and place. The Tilbury Industrial Park retail store and warehouse is busting at the seams with a wide selection of products imported from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and North Ireland — from tea and biscuits to crisps, candies and sweets. For items that cannot be imported, owners Steve and Lil McVittie do their best to source Canadian made products just as good, or better, than the original. They carry British style bacon, sausages, Scotch pies, black pudding, white pudding, Melton Mowbrays and meat pies. They also stock haggis, and many other Scottish items, for anyone celebrating Robbie Burns Day later this month. The McVitties opened their first store in Vancouver eight years ago after retiring from their respective careers. The McVittie roots run deep in the United Kingdom and the couple has visited the area. “We both kind of fell in love with British products,”

January 12, 2011 The Delta Optimist A17 Feedback

After years of Gordon Campbell and Carole James occupying their parties’ top spots, both the Liberals and NDP are in the process of selecting a new leader. Christy Clark, Kevin Falcon and George Abbott

are among those competing for the Liberal leadership while John Horgan has announced his candidacy for NDP leader and is expected to be joined by Mike Farnworth and Adrian Dix. The Optimist asked:

Have any leadership candidates caught your eye?

David Archambault I am not particularly interested in Christy Clark as a Liberal candidate. I would like someone that has continuous experience and she’s been out of the political scene for quite a while.

Patrick Dunn Kevin Falcon would be one that I’m interested in. Christy Clark [too]. Just to see what they have to say. I respect both of them as intelligent individuals. I’m not interested in the NDP at all.

You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com

Bob Roche No. They all appear about the same and none of them are outstanding. I think both parties need new blood.

Cliff Matson Christy Clark has. I’m a Christy Clark fan.

Last time we asked you:

What would you like for Christmas? • 53.49 per cent said a million dol- • 16.28 per cent said I’d take the Canucks winning the Cup this lars. season as a belated present. • 30.23 per cent said world peace.

Kirk Holifield

(AKA "Hollywood") April 16th, 1971 - January 11th, 2007 You were unique like no one who has ever been before or will come after. No one will smile your smile. No one will ever take your place for it is yours alone. You tried in your own way to make the world a better place. You left your mark. Kirk was the guy who would see someone alone or elderly in Ricki’s or ABC and quietly pay for their meal -- just because. He would always give to a panhandler. He cared so very much about people. That’s why there was over 900 people at his service. He always tried to make everyone around him feel special.

Carole Buckles with bioptic telecopes. The doctor fit him with bioptic telescope glasses. “Amazing!” says Donald. “I can read the street signs twice as far as I did before. I can play my sax again.Happy day!” Dr. Cusic also provides special prismatic reading glasses to make the newspaper a little easier to read. Carole Buckles, 71, of Arcadia, California came on the advise of a friend. “I wanted to be able to keep driving and do the fun things in life.” One of those fun things is baseball. “I love going to baseball games and now I cansee those close plays again,” say Carol. Bioptic Telescopic glasses were prescribed to read signs and see traffic lights farther away. As Carole put it, “These telescope glasses not only allow me to read signs from a farther distance, but make driving much easier. I’ve also used them to watch television so I don’thave to sit so close. Definitely worth the $1950 cost. I don’t know why I waited two years to do this. I should have come sooner.” Peter Rhodes traveled from Manchester, UK to be fit for special amorphic glasses for Retinitis Pigmentosa. He is one of the first patients in the United States or the UK to be helped with this rare eye disorder. Ellen Imboden traveled for Swedenand was helped with two pairs of glasses. Special $475 prismatic glasses that lether read newsprint, as well as bioptic telecopes to continue driving in Sweden. Low vision devices are not always expensive. Some reading glasses cost aslittle as $375 and some magnifers under $100. Every case is different because people have different levels of vision and different desires. Dr. Cusic sees patients in his offices in Kirkland, Bellingham and Olympia, and can be reached at: 425-285-1230 or tollfree at 1-877-823-2020.

Name: Mackenzie Age: 10 Occupation: Elementary school student What is the activity? Red Cross Race Ready swim program through Team Sungod Swim Club. Where & when does it take place? Saturday mornings from 7:45 – 9am at Sungod Recreation Centre. How often do you participate? Once a week. How long have you been involved? I’ve been swimming since I was a baby and I have completed one Race Ready set so far. Why did you get involved in this activity? I’ve been taking Red Cross Swim Kids lessons and I want to maintain my Red Cross certifications but I wanted to know what it would be like to be in a swim club. This course has 45 minutes of swim club coaching and 30 minutes of Red Cross Water Safety and Skills, so it is perfect for me. What do you like best about this activity? I really like the water safety. How does it benefit your life? It is important to know how to swim and I can work toward being a lifeguard if I want to continue. What other things do you do to keep active? Ballet, jazz dance, track & field and I like to play footy (Australian Football) in the spring. Did you know that swim clubs operate in either a fall/winter or the spring/summer seasonal format? Summer clubs generally use outdoor pools and are a great way for children who play hockey, ringette, soccer or ski to stay involved in swimming. Both summer and winter clubs offer a variety of options for participants, from competitive to recreational swimmers. Swim club coaching complements the skills taught in rec centre swim lessons and allows swimmers to ‘take it to the next level’. For more information on swim clubs and for other ways to be active in Delta, contact your local rec centre or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca.

John Lusted (centre), director of recreation at KinVillage Community Centre, receives a cheque for $4,107.67 from Dave MacMillan, (left), past president of the Ladner-Tsawwassen Kinsmen Club, and Andy Pinch, treasurer. Just because you have macular degeneration or other eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy doesn’t mean you mustgive up driving. Ever look through a pair of field glasses or binoculars? Things look bigger and closer, and much easier to see. Dr. Ross Cusic is using miniaturized binocularsor telescopes to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration or other eye conditions. “Some of my patients consider me the last stop for people who have vision loss.” Said Dr. Cusic, a low vision Optometrist. “People don’t know that there are doctors who are very experienced in low vision care.” Irv Matthes drove all the way from Penticton, BC to Kirkland, “Thank youfor putting some living back into my life.I could never have done this without these reading glasses. Now I can writethis letter and solve the daily cryptogram in the newspaper.” Macular Degeneration is the mostcommon eye disease amongst the seniorpopulation. As many as 25% of thoseover 65 have some degree of degeneration. The macula is one small part of theentire retina, but it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp images. When it degenerates macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision making it impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver’s vision test. The experts do not know what causes macular degeneration. But it is known that UV light from the sun is a major contributing factor. Other factors are smoking, aging of course, and improper nutrition. 15 to 20% of the time is isgenetic. There are two types, wet and dry. The wet type involves leaky blood vessels and can be lasered shut. Unfortunately, it’s a temporary fix since other leaks usually occur. “Our job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning.” says Dr. Cusic. Washington and Oregon are among many states that allow the use of telescopic glasses to help meet the vision requirements for driving. Ice Hawks set for another shot at Sockeyes Captain Liam Harding will look to continue his high scoring ways when Delta visits first place Richmond on Thursday The Delta Ice Hawks are hoping there are more goals in Liam Harding’s sizzling stick heading into Thursday’s night’s clash with the Richmond Sockeyes. The 20-year-old captain is off to a sensational start in 2011 — netting five goals in last week’s 8-7 win over the Port Moody Black Panthers, then adding a hat trick in Saturday’s 5-2 victory over the North Delta Devils. The South Delta Minor Hockey product is now 10-points clear of linemate Cody Smith atop the Pacific International Junior Hockey League scoring race with 63 points in 32 games, including 29 goals. Harding will need to be at his best for his team’s pivotal meeting with the first place Sockeyes at Minoru Arena (7:30 p.m.) Richmond not only owns a league best 27-4-3 record, it has lost just one since the end of October — an outstanding run 17-1 that includes two wins over the Ice Hawks. It’s not a stretch to suggest first place in the Tom Shaw Conference might be out of Delta’s grasp should it fall to its cross-river rival once again. The Sockeyes began the week with a three-point lead over the Ice Hawks (26-6-2) and a five-point cushion may be

insurmountable the way these two teams dominate the rest of the league. If the Sockeyes are looking for any extra motivation, it comes from the announcement of the rosters for next week’s allstar game. The Ice Hawks had eight players named to the Tom Shaw Conference team, including four starters, compared to just fivefor Richmond. Goalie Doug Birks, defenceman Alex Martin and forwards Harding and Smith were first team selections. Defenceman Ryan Mana was named to the second team, while Ryan Cuthbert (defenceman), Spencer Traher (forward) and Kye Benjaminsen (forward) were also chosen. The game goes on Monday in Abbotsford. It most certainly has become a two horse race for top spot with the reeling North Delta Devils having fallen off the pace. The Ice Hawks handed the Devils their seventh consecutive defeat with Saturday’s win. The visitors dominated the final 20 minutes with three unanswered goals — capped off by Harding’s third of the night with 2:11 remaining during a man advantage. Cody Fidgett had the other two goals, while Smith added a pair

Delta Ice Hawks captain Liam Harding has been on fire to begin the new year. The Pacific International Junior Hockey League scoring leader has eight goals in his last two games. He leads the Ice Hawks into Richmond Thursday for a pivotal divisional game. of assists. Nick Enegren made 25 saves for the win as the Ice Hawks enjoyed a huge advantage in the shot department (49-27). Last week’s wild affair

against Port Moody, saw the Ice Hawks jump out to a 3-1 first period lead then allow the visitors to score four of the next five goals, before rallying for

the win. Harding’s fifth of the night at the 6:20 mark of the third period, proved to be the game winner after the Panthers closed out the scoring with a pair of goals.

Smith also had a big night with four assists, while Aaron Merrick had three helpers. Anthony Brito, Mark Whiteley and Martin had the other goals.

Sport council hosting seminar on improving an athlete’s development encouraged to attend. The seminar will have two featured presenters — Tom Walker who was Director of Sport Participation at 2010 Legacies Now, and Delta Olympian Candice Murray. Walker, who now works for North Vancouver parks and recreation, will discuss the role of parents helping their child develop properly and stay engaged in

Tides at Tsawwassen Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet

sport. This is critical knowledge that all parents and coaches need in order to help their children. Murray, a former softball standout with the national team, has a special insight into the techniques to overcome adversity, injuries and developmental plateaus and how they link to adult values, resilience and citizenship. Her inspirational story should not be missed.

The Delta Sport Council was established to assist the sporting community of Delta with training opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers. “Sport is a very important element of our community in encouraging our youth to lead healthy active lifestyles and to help them to develop to be the best that they can be,” said

Delta Sports Council chair Barry Howard. “We wish to advocate and promote the values and benefits of sport, recreational activity, and the ‘Sport of Life’ model in the community and to promote successful local athletes, coaches and sport administrators as role models for Delta youth.” To register for Saturday’s seminar e-mail info@deltasportcouncil.org.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charlie Tappert in the morning of January 5, 2011. Born in Germany in 1930, Charlie immigrated to Montreal in 1953 with his brother Klaus, his soon-to-be-bride Gerda and his mother Elisabeth. Charlie worked for Nortel for 37 plus years, retiring in 1994 in Vancouver. During his time with Nortel he lived in Montreal, Vancouver (Tsawwassen) and Vienna. Although Montreal was his first home in Canada, Tsawwassen ultimately became home. Charlie loved woodworking. He completed a great number of projects including the construction of a 26-foot sailboat. He thoroughly enjoyed the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino in particular. Charlie leaves behind his wife Gerda of 57 plus years, son Alex, daughter-in-law Fran and two fantastic granddaughters, Leeah and Kyla; sister-in-law Denise Tappert in Hudson, Quebec, nephew Conrad Tappert, wife Tammi and their 3 great kids Mathieu, Marcus and Michelle also in Hudson and niece Elaine Hanson, husband Brian and 3 fabulous children Daniel, Dominique and Jacqueline in Oakville, Ontario. We would like to thank Dr. Larry Adam and all the staff at Delta Hospital and Mountain View Manor for their care and support over the last few years. At Charlie’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
