De Jong makes Delta South stop
Former attorney general is third party leadership candidate to visit riding in effort to woo Liberal members BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Liberal leadership contender Mike de Jong made a campaign stop in South Delta Sunday. The Abbotsford West MLA made his pitch to a couple of dozen party supporters and onlookers at Speed’s Pub at Ladner Harbour, preferring a more informal sit down chat with the group rather than standing up and making a speech. With the NHL all-star game blaring in the background, the former attorney general said he’s worried none of the other candidates have addressed the fact B.C. still has a huge deficit. He also warned that his party better get its act together because the NDP will be ready by the next election. Prior to his chat with the group, he told the Optimist his approach in winning back the riding is to be upfront how the province stands fiscally and how to generate greater economic growth and jobs, including in places like South Delta, which he described as “a free enterprise enclave.” As far as issues around the Agricultural Land Reserve, the loss of farmland in Delta and the viability of farming, de Jong, noting he lives on a farm in the ALR, said a multi-pronged approach is needed depending on the area. “The challenge, I think, that has arisen with the ALC (Agricultural
Mike de Jong was at Speed’s Pub on the Ladner waterfront Sunday afternoon. Land Commission) and the ALR is we tried to develop a single approach that is applicable across the province. What we are increasingly seeing is that the circumstances are so very different,”
he said. “So the protection that needs to be afforded to precious farmland in and around South Delta and the Lower Mainland generally is very different than the kind of

protection that is necessary in the northeast, let’s say Fort Nelson. I’m not sure you can accomplish the objectives you’re seeking to accomplish in areas as different as that with one legal mandate,” de
Jong explained. “The idea I have advanced is you develop a mandate, a legal mandate, and you embed it in legislation that is specific to some of those differing circumstances.” De Jong said it’s absurd to assume the kinds of pressures on farmland in places like Fort Nelson is anything like South Delta. Back to the Liberal leadership race, de Jong said he hasn’t been trying to garner corporate support nor the backing of the political elite, instead focusing on connecting with the public that will soon result in “thousands” of people increasing his support and profile in the race. De Jong, whose campaign platform includes lowering the voting age in B.C. from 18 to 16 to attract more voters, is the third Liberal candidate to visit Delta South after recent stops by George Abbott and Christy Clark. Abbott and Clark both mentioned they’d like to have independent Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington in their government. de Jong was less outwardly inviting, only saying she’d be more than welcome as long as she believes in his free enterprise ideals. Kevin Falcon, Ed Mayne and Moira Stilwell are also vying for the Liberal leadership. Party members will vote on Feb. 26.
Seven dogs found abandoned in park in Tilbury industrial area BY
JESSICA KERR

The Delta Community Animal Shelter is investigating after seven dogs were found abandoned in a local park.
The dogs, poodle crosses, were found last week at Dow Park, which is located at River and Huston roads in the Tilbury industrial area not far from the 80th Street shelter. “The dogs were reported to
DCAS by someone who was passing by and saw the frightened dogs,” the shelter said in a press release. It is believed the canines are breeding dogs that lived in cages before being left in the park.
“All of the dogs have not been spayed or neutered and range in age from a few months to a few years old,” the shelter said. “Their white hair is stained and DCAS believes this is because they were housed previously in cages where
they had to live in their feces and urine. The dogs are exceptionally shy and obviously not socialized.” If the culprit is found, animal abandonment charges can be pursued as a bylaw violation or as a criminal offence.

Civic sites key to harbour future Consultant recommends Delta issue request for proposals to redevelop properties on Ladner waterfront BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Two key properties owned by Delta at Ladner Harbour will be a catalyst for major changes in the area. That’s how Coun. Scott Hamilton, chair of the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee, sees the future of the Seven Seas Fish property and the site next door where old Brackman-Ker building stood until recently. Hamilton’s committee had a presentation last week by consulting firm Colliers International, which outlined its final recommendations for encouraging the redevelopment of the waterfront to make it more of a destination. The consultant recommended Delta issue a request for proposals for the two civic properties on Chisholm Street next to Spot on the Water Park. Hamilton, noting the recommendations must still go before Delta council and likely another public open house, said the municipality would still own the properties but would provide longterm leases. “Essentially as landlords we’d want to see the properties developed, so what we’ll do is probably take out a request for proposals. We won’t tie it up too much with details and want to give any proponents the opportunity to get as creative as possible with their ideas, and provide a long term lease in the area of 50 or 60 years,” he said.
“That’s necessary in this day and age for companies that will have to go to the bank and float a proposal like this to get the proper financing. They need tenure on a site and to attract customers on subleases, so they have to know they’ll be there for more than 10 years or 20 years and know they’ll have an opportunity for their businesses to grow.” Formed in 2009, the committee has met on several occasions with property owners to see what can be done “to achieve a vibrant, people-oriented environ-
ment, with strong linkages to the waterfront reflecting and celebrating the historical roots of the community.”

“I think Chisholm Street is going to wind up becoming a real draw in years to come and we may have a mini-Steveston on our hands, possibly, attracting all kinds of different businesses and a very eclectic mix.”
Coun. Scott Hamilton
Hamilton said one local resident who also owns property on the waterfront has already come up with a development plan that, at first glance, appears excit-
change over the next couple of years with restaurants, shops, galleries and more, he said, As far as properties on the south side of Chisholm,
there are also opportunities, “On the south side we have a couple of shops operating there with temporary use permits and they may want to come to us to put some permanent zoning in place for those types of shops to continue. I think Chisholm Street is going to wind up becoming a real draw in years to come and we may have a miniSteveston on our hands, possibly, attracting all kinds of different businesses and a very eclectic mix,” Hamilton said. Mayor reminding dog owners to get licence for their four-legged friends
Increased enforcement has seen 2,000 more dogs licensed in last two years BY

Delta is reminding dog owners to get a licence for their four-legged friends. Mayor Lois Jackson was at the Delta Community Animal Shelter on 80th Street Monday for an education campaign photo opportunity as well as to get her dogs, Maggie and Johnny, licences. The spaniels received licence numbers one and two. Jackson told the Optimist she hopes other dog owners will follow suit so they

don’t have to deal with bylaw enforcement. All dogs six months and older require a licence. According to Delta’s bylaw department, over the past two years, as a result of increased enforcement, the number of dogs licensed in Delta has increased by approximately 2,000 to currently stand at 7,148. That works out to about $80,000 in additional revenue that goes back to the animal shelter. Last year, as of late November, animal control
officers had issued about 1,000 warnings for a variety of offences and issued 138 tickets, mostly for owners not having a dog licence. Dog licences are available at the animal shelter, municipal hall and at some vet clinics and pet food stores. For more information, visit www.deltacommunityanimalshelter.ca. Meanwhile, the municipality, which took over animal control services and the shelter from the Delta Humane Society a few years ago, is looking for a new home for the shelter.
The current site is next to the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Staff members worry the dogs and cats will become stressed when the new highway opens. The mayor listed finding a new location for the animal shelter as one of the top priorities for Delta in 2011. PHOTO BY

acquire properties probably won’t go anywhere, however. “We really do expect private interests stepping forward. We’re creating the catalyst here to get the ball rolling. If private owners, in my opinion, want to redevelop, in the long-term it’s going to be in their best inertest,” Hamilton said. Among the consultant’s recommendations for Delta is a review of zoning guidelines to allow flexibility for density, additional residential, unit types and parking. As far as the parking issue, the consultant’s report identified that as a political issue. The report listed (with question marks) some potential solutions to the challenges that might result from redevelopment, including increased enforcement or the installation of meters. The consultant also recommended continued streetscape improvements. Over the last couple of years Delta has undertaken a major cleanup of the harbour. Garbage and derelict boats were removed and net shed owners have new standards of occupation. Meanwhile, as changes are slowly taking place at Ladner Harbour, to the north of the municipality a similar cleanup has begun in recent months along Gunderson Slough. Many of the same complaints about the shabby, run-down appearance of that area, which had been made about Ladner Harbour prior to the clean up, prompted the municipality to make changes.

Bog society’s legal efforts get a boost at fundraiser Over 100 attend event in East Ladner last weekend
Support for the Burns Bog Conservation Society’s legal action is alive and well in Delta. Over 100 people attended a fundraiser organized by the South Fraser Action Network last Saturday evening at the Sundance Banquet Hall in East Ladner. Well-known folk music artists Dennis Lakusta and the Fraser Union donated their time and talents for an enjoyable concert. Graeme Drew emceed the event, which was attended by both Delta MLAs, Vicki Huntington and Guy Gentner.
“There was great enthusiasm in the audience. Many people said they appreciated the opportunity to support the action,” said Inger Kam, one of the organizers. “There has, to date, been no comprehensive and independent assessment of the cumulative effects of all the Gateway Project’s impact on the estuary of the Fraser River,” she said. The Burns Bog Conservation Society filed a statement of claim almost two months ago alleging the federal government violated a conservation covenant to protect Burns Bog by allowing the South Fraser
Perimeter Road to be built in proximity. The society used a grant from West Coast Environmental Law to file the suit. A statement of defence from the federal government in response to the bog society’s lawsuit was due this week. Many businesses donated items for a silent auction at last Saturday’s fundraiser. The South Fraser Action Network (www.sfan.ca) welcomes new volunteers. Those interested can call Kam at 604-948-4884 or Wilma Haig at 604-9462481.
South Fraser Perimeter Road construction forces permanent closure of 72nd Street cow tunnel A local shortcut has been eliminated to make way for South Fraser Perimeter Road. With construction of the new highway well underway, the 72nd Street cow tunnel that runs under Highway 99 was recently closed.
The cow tunnel has long been used as a local shortcut to the Vancouver Landfill as well as a way around traffic tie-ups. Coun. Ian Paton addressed the closure at a Delta council meeting last week, stressing the decision to permanently close
the tunnel was made by the province, not the municipality. Delta chief administrative officer George Harvie said a new underpass is in the works to replace the cow tunnel. However, it will only be for farm vehicles and emergency personnel. PHOTO BY

A local woman is desperately looking for a home for her animals after being evicted this week from the barn she has leased for several years. Kate Lirette has run Bay Breeze Stables on 34B Avenue in Ladner for more than five years. The barn and surrounding 3.5 acres are home to 10 horses, a chicken farm with more than 100 chickens, as well as some cats and rabbits she has taken in. She said she received an eviction notice on Jan. 12 from her landlord, a Richmond family, citing non-payment of rent. Lirette contends she sends the family post-dated rent cheques every few months and keeps a photocopy of each one. She said a cheque was sent for the month of January. She appealed the eviction in court and just received word Monday the court had ruled in favour of the landlord and she will have to vacate the property by Friday. Adriana Zylmans, whose family owns the property, declined to comment on the matter when contacted by the Optimist Tuesday. “All we’d ever asked was to stay on the property until the end of June when the original lease was up,”

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW It would be easy to look at the financial disclosure documents from last September’s Delta council by-election and conclude that unless you’re willing to spend some serious cash, you’re not going to get elected, even at the local level. I must admit there was an amazing similarity between where the candidates finished at the polls and where they ranked in terms of campaign spending. The winner spent the most, the second place finisher spent the next highest amount, the third place finisher had the third biggest pot of money ... and so on down the line. This direct correlation between campaign spending and electoral outcome doesn’t mean, however, the by-election was bought or that anyone with deep pockets is guaranteed success at the ballot box. Did people vote for Ian Paton because he spent the most or because they thought he was the best candidate? I suspect it had far more to do with the latter. It certainly didn’t hurt Paton’s cause he had the largest war chest to get his message out, but we’re also talking about a lifetime Deltan, a longtime farmer, someone who has lent his auctioneering talents to all sorts of worthwhile causes over the years and a candidate endorsed by a four-term mayor and three veteran councillors. Adding to that mix is the fact Ladner was without a representative on municipal government, quite possibly for the first time in Delta’s history, and that it had been a quarter century since a farmer had sat at the council table. In other words, there were a number of factors going in Paton’s favour, none of which had anything to do with his sum of money. I’ve observed over the years that cash alone won’t get it done (call it the Mike Reilly rule) and that donors tend to gravitate to candidates that have the requisite resume. It’s not surprising Sylvia Bishop, another one with a long history of community involvement, finished second in both the by-election and in campaign spending. Ditto for Maria DeVries, who finished in third place. It’s convenient to lament that the little guy (or gal) doesn’t have a hope without bags of money, but if that little guy that has been involved in community affairs and has built a network of support, financial and otherwise, then his chance of electoral success improves dramatically. It’s much more difficult for a little guy to come out of the blue and win a seat, but then again, it’s hard to be successful at just about anything without paying your dues first.
We can send a mayor to India but we can’t save the arts? SYLVIA BISHOP
COMMUNITY COMMENT Recent news the Delta Arts Council must give up its buildings and reduce its services and programs in all three areas of Delta is disturbing. The DAC’s four-decade history of representing and supporting the arts in Delta has served us well. Its shows, exhibitions, classes and workshops inspired generations of visual and performing artists, sometimes providing the only venues to showcase their talents. It should continue. In spite of its best efforts to develop a strategic plan to address its finances and future goals, the DAC did not meet the arbitrary timeline set by Delta. Shame on our civic leaders. And further, shame on the provincial government for taking away funding in support of this and other not-for-profit organizations.
The public was lulled into the acceptability of gaming because proceeds would assist cashstrapped not-for-profit organizations. Yet gaming revenues are increasing while not-for-profits face cuts. The arts are as integral to our society as public education and community sports. We see and hear the fight to keep schools open. I can well imagine if a sports field were closed, or sports organization collapse, we’d be up in arms. You need only look at the Wall of Fame outside municipal hall to see the value placed on those who excel in sports and those who serve in politics. Shame on the lack of equal treatment for all groups in our community. Artists contribute to the economy. They support community retailers who sell them everything from canvasses to paints; musical instruments; technical equipment to stage shows; and much more. And let’s not forget what artists do for our community. Many artists donate their time and talents in support of other not-for-profits with funding goals. Think of the silent auctions you have attended. Walk down the hallways of Delta Hospital. The evidence of the arts community supporting the neigh-

bourhood it lives in is everywhere. Look around you. Artists are our neighbours. They may be starting out with a new hobby or already a professional. Artists are in our midst. They are us. And yet we seem very comfortable to let our local government determine the existence of the Delta Arts Council. Delta residents seem to have accepted the DAC’s fate at the hands of Delta council, with barely a whimper. This is wrong. So in a year where our tax dollars have been spent to send the mayor to Mangalore and Mexico, where council voted itself an increase, where time and taxpayer money was spent in a botched Tsawwassen Area Plan process, where the Sungod Recreation Centre has undergone a costly renovation, we cannot find money to support the arts in our community? Really? Delta has reserves — our tax dollars — in its budget. Those tax dollars could help the Delta Arts Council get its footing back. And if we don’t have civic and provincial leaders now who will support the arts with our tax money, it’s time to paint a new picture in November’s municipal election.

had commitments from the arts council. Other groups interested in booking into the facilities should contact municipal hall. Theatrical productions, classes and performance events will continue as before and, hopefully, others will be added. Last Tuesday, at a special general meeting for the arts council, two motions were voted on and
passed. One was that the arts council would reject the Corporation of Delta’s offer of a facility, specifically the ArtSpace in North Delta, at the rate that would include the lease and lifecycle (maintenance). We would, instead, look at other options for our home for now. One of the reasons we rejected this offer was that we believed the years
we had invested in these facilities (11 years with $450,000 of our own money) deserved greater recognition. The second motion was one of support for the board to determine the best option for dealing with all the assets the arts council owns in the facilities. Dave Stevens President Delta Arts Council

Centre’s vehicle is the stuff of commercials — carved by cattle and people, and not really meant for vehicles. She wanted to convey to Toyota how amazing its Carib station wagon was to withstand the roads let alone the weight that it carries. Sometimes there are six adults plus as many children, animals, medical supplies, furniture, boxes with farm produce — all in the same trip. Brenda’s ultimate hope would be that a person working for Toyota would want to see her dozen-plus photos of this vehicle on its dreadful roads and use them for advertising while possibly donating a minivan to the project. Editor: I don’t know whether to be amused or dismayed by the letters of complaint that people in this community send to the Optimist. From noisy leaf blowers to airplane traffic to town entry signs to children playing in the street, we sure have our challenges here in Pleasantville. Let’s put things in context. Try spending a few months in Haiti, Somalia, Afghanistan or The Congo. I doubt you will find many people sympathizing with our plight here in the cozy confines of South Delta. Our struggles here are not real struggles. Quit complaining and be thankful for what we have, which is more than 99 per cent of people in the world. Joel Hueston

Editor: Re: Rough road hindering resource centre, Jan. 8 I read with interest the article about the Tekera Resource Centre (http:// ugandavillage.org/index. htm) and its need for a new vehicle. Brenda Casey is a friend of mine, a woman confined to a wheelchair with MS, who travelled to Uganda to visit her daughter who is volunteering as the director of the centre. She described in great detail the Toyota vehicle in which she, among many others, was often a passenger. It is a 1992 Toyota station wagon that has 1.3 million kilometers on it and is gaining at least 50 to 100 kilometres per day given its many trips to varying destinations for a myriad of reasons. The roads are poor — potholes up to two feet deep and several feet long

SkyTrain supporters have failed us for far too long
Editor: Re: Politicians talking about a split from TransLink, Jan. 29 So Delta council is mulling over leaving TransLink? Good! For too long TransLink has used South Fraser municipalities as milch cows to fund politically prestigious and very expensive SkyTrain projects in Vancouver. For too long TransLink has misrepresented SkyTrain and has failed in its fiduciary duty to plan for modern, affordable and efficient public transit for the Lower Mainland. For too long TransLink has invented criteria to sup-
port expensive SkyTrain construction at the expense of modern light rail, yet if one scrutinizes TransLink’s claims, they become mere pixie dust. International transportation planners are not fooled by TransLink as only seven (soon to be six) SkyTraintype systems are in operation around the world, despite being marketed for over 30 years. Only two of the six, Vancouver and Kuala Lumpur, are used for regional transportation, with the remaining systems used for demonstration lines and airport/fun fair people movers. To date, there are over 450 cities around the world
that operate one or more light rail/streetcar/tram lines. The fact is, modern light rail made SkyTrain obsolete two decades ago. It is time for honest transportation planning in the region as the taxpayer cannot afford any more truncated and politically prestigious mini-metro projects that have done little to provide an affordable alternative to the car. It is time for Delta and South Fraser municipalities to leave TransLink and let those who have SkyTrain pay for it. Malcolm Johnston Light Rail Committee/ Rail for the Valley

Editor: Re: Politicians talking about a split from TransLink, Jan. 29 I, for one, am happy to hear that politicians are talking about a split from TransLink. In the past, seniors, in particular, looked forward to attending concerts at the Orpheum, shopping or just going to downtown Vancouver for a meal. No more can we enjoy the trip. Once the Canada Line came into existence, we are required to transfer from bus to train, and train to bus. This is not only inconvenient but there is the added burden of having to deal with all the unnecessary stairs. Also, no matter what time of day I travel, I have had to stand on the train as few give up their seats. Since it appears Delta is paying more than its fair share to TransLink, perhaps if nothing else, our politicians will be able to negotiate to reinstate our old, much more convenient, service. Never mind that it’s February, and that temperatures are in the lower single digits. Never mind that the mornings still call for boots and mittens, and extra sweaters beneath the coats. Never mind that I haven’t watered the garden for months, or plopped down on a chair on the deck. I’m still smelling the teriyaki sauce. And the honeygarlic glaze. And the two or three dozen variations of barbecue sauce the neighbourhood’s been using. It may be winter, but don’t try telling that to the grill — or the people who use them. “I think we should have barbecued steaks tonight,” said the husband the other day. The husband does not often make menu suggestions, except where the barbecue is concerned. The

along with their toques. “Gonna get that propane fired up,” some mister will be telling his missus in Montreal. “Time to put on the lamb chops.” The missus, I am guessing, will squint at the elements beyond the window, and wondering if the sleet is mixed with hail, or whether the hail is mixed with snow. “You don’t think it’s a little, uh, cold to be barbecuing?” she will ask her mister. “Of course not!” the mister will retort. “It’s just a bit of precipitation!”` I don’t, quite frankly, know what it would take to keep the grill-meisters in the kitchen. An absence of propane, perhaps, or maybe an absence of lamb chops. In our house, as in houses from here to Gaspe, winter doesn’t mean the steaks are cooked in the frying pan. Those hardy men with their barbecues will fire them up, no problem. They gotta do what they gotta do when the grill is out there waiting. To heck with precipitation.

barbecue, let’s just say, is the husband’s domain. And the husband will not abandon the barbecue simply because the temperature is minus five — or minus 10, when the wind chill’s factored in. The husband is no barbecue wimp, and will not allow anything to stand between a grilled rib eye and his stomach. Gale-force winds? Freezing rain? No problemo, thinks the husband. Let’s fire ‘er up. The thinking, it’s clear, is shared by other members of the neighbourhood, almost all of them male. The husband will be out there in the elements, applying hickory maple sauce to the ribs, while related aromas come wafting from all directions: a chipotle scent from the house to one side, a Texas rub from the other. And if this is happening in my neighbourhood, I reckon it’s happening in neighbourhoods all across this winter nation. As we speak, I am betting the barbecue kings are out there grilling in Quebec, and reaching for their tongs

Living on the Edge of Africa
Yearning for adventure and philanthropy leads local on an African adventure

here I was: getting stuck in a mud pit with a three-metre long crocodile, being slapped in the face by an elephant’s trunk, tracking and hand feeding an adult cheetah, being charged by a hormonal rhinoceros, pursued by a lioness with a windowless truck as my only protection and, of course, the biggest challenge of all — sleeping alone in a tent camp — and I loved every second of it. I went to Africa for the first time because I was hungry. I was hungry for adventure, a journey, an awakening, to give back, to step outside of myself and to get back to myself. I went to Africa to learn, to grow, to overcome my fears and to give purpose to a holiday. I wanted to get outside of myself, to give to others, to make a contribution — however infinitesimal it would be. What I didn’t realize at the time I signed up for this job (the first time I ever paid to do a job) was that it would turn out to be the greatest adventure of my life. No amount of university courses or travel could give me what I got in a few short weeks of complete selfless giving — and it wasn’t all beans and rice as I had anticipated. In fact, I was treated better than I could have imagined, I was appreciated. The food was hardly beans and rice; it was simple but even the simplest food tasted divine at the end of a laborious day because I had earned every morsel of it. I spent six weeks in Africa. Part of my time was spent in the Kynsna townships teaching conservation to children and some on an elephant reserve in Plettenberg Bay rehabilitating elephants waiting to be released into the wild. The majority of my time was spent on a conservation project at a Big Five Game Reserve in Albertinia, on the famous Garden Route in South Africa. While I loved every minute of every project, my passion was working with the Big Five at the Game Reserve. Not only did I learn about the wildlife and the workings of the lodge, I also learned the value of a hard day’s work. The enthusiasm and kindness of the amazing people who dedicate their days in this Game Reserve was contagious. I was also relieved to find that, from the perspective of pure creature comforts, the Game Reserve went beyond my expectations, meals were excellent and my tent was warm and durable (a welcome relief as the lion camp bordered on my tent camp). Tenting, in my opinion, is the best way to experience Africa (this coming from someone who does not camp at home in British Columbia). One feels closer to the land and animals. In the camp there was a common area that had Internet and a kitchen, hot shower and bathroom, although I did share a shower once with a very large toad. The backdrop to this reserve was the magnificent Langberg mountain range — standing tall like dark blue uniformed soldiers guarding this pristine valley. On the other side was the world-famous magnificent Garden Route where, on a weekend off I found myself a few centimeters away from great white sharks in the, err, safe confines of an aluminum cage. Time disappeared, modern conveniences no longer existed and communication

with the outside world was limited. All major players in my former life as a 2010 Olympic Project manager were no longer even in the game. Instead key players became survival, team work, willingness and openness to do any job required of me from shoveling dung to rebuilding roads and tree planting under the watchful eyes of a pride of lions only 200 metres away with nothing separating me from them except my fear. The experience was only a few weeks, but the memories will last a lifetime, memories of overcoming fears and making new friends. Friends with claws, paws, horns, scales and trunks. One highlight was planting a garden not just for the selfish pleasure that comes from gardening, but for a village; a village that will bear the fruits of our labour for many seasons to come. Each and every day I gave sweat, tears and persevered trying desperately to even out the balance sheet, but, at the end of it all, I received far more than I could ever give. My efforts only magnifying what I got out of this experience. To my delight, the highlights of each day and each night were numerous and oftentimes quite different. There were never any dull moments. There was always plenty to do and adventures were plentiful. On a typical day Ranger Piet picked me up just after sunrise. Off we’d go to find Kittibon and Silati, two anxiously waiting elephants, to feed them; they are creatures of routine. When we enter the boma I cautiously approach
Kittibon and she greets me by throwing sawdust in my face! This playful routine became a daily occurrence during my stay, so I eventually got smart and wore a bandana to cover my face. Kittibon, however, is even smarter; she spit water or tossed branches at me instead! After feeding Piet lets them out of the boma. We distribute hay and branches for them around the elephant camp so they must go look for it; it is important to keep them stimulated otherwise they get into mischief. We spent some time doing road repairs, one of the many tasks done by hand. The road repairs consisted of gathering rocks then filling potholes with them, laying each rock by hand, and fitting them as close together as possible. One day, I was pleasantly surprised to look up and see a mother rhino and baby
watching our work. It’s true that to give is to receive. This is proven day after day in a small, out-of-theway place in South Africa where the skies are always blue and there’s always so much to do. A place where the miracle of giving is always evident. Volunteering is an investment that offers a lifetime of returns in soul-enriching memories. It’s an amazing way to not just see a country, but to experience its culture and civilization and to leave an impression. Because even if that impression is one tree planted, a small garden built or leaving a smile on someone’s face, it was worth it. Tsawwassen resident Melissa Haynes volunteered with an organization called Edge of Africa. She has since written a book, Learning to play with a Lion’s Testicles.

A16 The Delta Optimist February 2, 2011 Feedback
Delta council recently talked about the idea of communities south of the Fraser River splitting from TransLink and creating a new transit authority. Civic officials say there’s no hope for TransLink to improve
local bus service. The authority is requesting property taxes be raised to fund a $1.4 billion SkyTrain line into Coquitlam. The Optimist asked:
Should Delta break away from TransLink?
Kristina Skladowski I think that if it would help make things runs smoother and faster, then why not? But, if it’s going to cost a lot of money, then you’d have to weigh the positives and negatives.
Mike Rouday If they can afford it, yes. Dollars and cents, that’s all it’s boiling down to.
You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Lesley Desnoyers If it’s financially feasible, it would probably benefit the community better than staying with TransLink.
Dwight Svenkeson Yes. It’s getting too expensive.
Tim Ayers Sure. I think it’s a plausible idea and depending on the economics of it, if we get better bang for the buck, and it serves the community more efficiently ... I think that’d be great.
Last week we asked you:
Are you concerned about a big earthquake? • 17.39 per cent said yes, very. • 43.48 per cent said somewhat.
• 39.13 per cent said not at all.

Devils coach off to New Zealand
Steve McGilligan accepts offer to guide Auckland Stars in 11-team pro league STORIES BY MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist.com
If the South Delta Sun Devils are to make a serious run at their first-ever provincial tournament berth in the coming weeks, they will be doing it without their head coach. The senior boys basketball program said farewell to Steve McGilligan on the weekend after he agreed to coach the Auckland Stars of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NBL). The Tsawwassen resident, whose lengthy hoop resumé includes stints at the collegiate level, came to terms with the club last week and left for New Zealand on Sunday. The 11-team NBL runs through the spring and McGilligan will be returning home in July. He had been pursued by the Stars for some time but first wanted to go with the Devils to their recent trip to Hamilton, ON for the Silver Fox Invitational which culminated a vigorous fundraising campaign. “It’s really hard saying goodbye to these kids,” said McGilligan. “But the players and the parents have been so support-
ive. They think it would be crazy not to take the job.” Making the decision easier was current South Delta junior boys coach James Johnson agreeing to also take on the senior team with the blessing of remaining assistants John Nicholson, Brad Merritt and Jason Knight. Johnson coached the senior boys team at Seaquam secondary before joining the SDSS teaching staff in September. McGilligan has overseen the Sun Devils senior program since the 2007-08 season. He made a bold move a year later by bringing up a number of junior age players in hopes of building a contender. His patience has paid off with the team destined for the Fraser Valley playoffs — led by third-year standouts Zach Nicholls and Dustin Triano. New Zealand’s NBL allows two import players per team and the level of play has consistently improved over the years. The Stars have won nine titles since the league’s inception in 1982. “It’s probably a little better than what CIS is right now,” added McGilligan, who receives free use of a home and car, to go along with his salary.

Steve McGilligan barks out instructions as Nick Bridle looks on during his final game as head coach of the South Delta Sun Devils senior boys basketball team on Saturday. McGilligan left Sunday to coach a New Zealand pro team.
Sun Devils cruise to easy victory at Wildcat Classic tourney South Delta actually got off to a sluggish start in the final and trailed 24-14 before coming to life with four straight three-pointers to overwhelm its Vancouver opponent. The Devils enjoyed a 52-39 advantage at halftime and were in cruise control over the final two quarters. With the tournament only recognizing one all-star per team, Grade 11 forward Jackson Temple was awarded for his outstanding work at both ends of the floor. Standouts Justin Triano and Zach Nicholls also were major forces in the three games.

The hope is the performance is another sign the team has turned the corner heading into a critical stretch in league play. The Sun Devils take a 4-1 record into this week’s games against Earl Marriott and Elgin Park. There are also significant dates on the horizon against ninth ranked Tamanawis Wildcats and the 10th ranked North Delta Huskies. South Delta stumbled into the new year with a poor tournament showing at Arch Bishop Carney in Coquitlam, then was mauled in a 71-56 loss to the Seaquam Seahawks.
“We had been playing poorly going into that game and we weren’t ready with just how physical they played,” said departing head coach Steve McGilligan. “They basically intimidated us.” Two days later, the Devils were off to Hamilton for the prestigious 40th annual Silver Fox Invitational. They failed to win a game but battled hard and were competitive against a steady diet of top ranked Ontario teams. South Delta returned home to post league wins over Panorama Ridge (103-54) and Semiahmoo (97-54), before heading to the
McMath tourney. “We had a ton of fun and got to see some great competition back there,” added McGilligan. “At least I am leaving the team, knowing the kids are in a good position to keep moving forward.” At the buzzer.... It was expected to be a sweep by local teams at the McMath tourney , however, the Delta Pacers were surprised 62-52 by Lord Tweedsmuir in the opening round of the girls draw. The Pacers rebounded with lopsided wins over Burnaby South and Johnston Heights.

After a steady diet of elite competition for much of their season in tournament play, the South Delta Sun Devils took a step down and dominated their opponents en route to winning last weekend’s McMath Wildcat Classic in convincing fashion. The Devils took home top prize in the eight-team event with a 106-70 win over the Lord Byng Grey Ghosts in Saturday’s final. It marked the third straight game they had managed to crack the century mark after earlier wins over Prince George (111-73) and StevestonLondon (102-60).

The landscape for youth soccer in B.C. will have a new plateau for the 2011-12 season with the launching of a High Performance League (HPL). Membership of the B.C. Soccer Association cleared the way for the HPL by using a Special General Meeting Jan. 21 to unanimously approve the rule changes required to facilitate the enhanced platform for competition and player development in B.C. The HPL will become the top level of youth soccer, bumping Boys Select and Girls Metro to secondtier status — followed by gold and silver rep offered at the club levels. Eight franchises will be awarded later this month and feature boys and girls teams ranging from U13 to U18. Other wrinkles include

passed away peacefully at the Delta Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Jim retired to Tsawwassen in 1986 and gave back to his new community through numerous volunteer endeavours, including the Knights of Columbus, Tsawwassen Legion, Kinsmen Lawn Bowling Club and McKee House, to name a few. He and Marg were original supporters and “Friends of the Secret Garden” – a special place that brought them much joy. Rarely in a lifetime, a special person comes along; one who affects everyone he meets in a way that is indescribable and thus leaves a legacy beyond comprehension. Jim Daniels was such a man. To say who he was would only take a moment, but to capture his compassion and devotion as Husband, Dad, Grampa, Great Grampa, Brother, Uncle and Friend would take a lifetime. He left us all his sterling example of love, strength and courage of heart. Left to lovingly remember him are his wife of 24 years, Margaret and her family; his family Marlynn, Bruce (Joan), Jean Anne (Wally), Beryl (Les) and Gloria, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; his sisters, Ruth, Marg and Joyce; sisters-in-law Mary and Jean; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Jean, as well as other relatives and friends. How fortunate were we to know the knowledge of his eyes, the wit and wisdom of his tongue and the love and kindness of his hands. How blessed we were to dwell in his heart. Funeral services were held on January 21, 2011 at Sacred Heart Chapel; inurnment in Boundary Bay Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Secret Garden (c/o Brian Whitehouse), 424 Seashell Drive, Delta BC V4L 2L4; the Salvation Army; or, to the charity of your choice.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
