Teen charged in murder Laura Szendrei’s parents not expecting to see skinny kid accused of killing daughter BY
TOM ZYTARUK
Optimist contributor
They were expecting to see a scary monster, a big bogeyman, but the image Rachael and Mike Szendrei had conjured up was a far cry from the skinny kid who appeared in Surrey Provincial Court Monday, charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of their 15-year-old daughter, Laura, in North Delta’s Mackie Park last September. “I’d like to rip his head off,”
the burly — and clearly enraged — dad told reporters outside the courthouse. Laura’s mother was surprised when she laid eyes on the teen, saying she’d expected a “big bogeyman, a scary monster.” Prosecutor Wendy Stephen said the Crown would seek an adult sentence for the 18-year-old North Deltan, if he’s found guilty. That would work out to life without eligibility to apply for parole for
25 years. The accused was 17 when Laura was killed, so it is illegal to publish his name as the Youth Criminal Justice Act shields his identity. Under the act, a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of 10 years, with six in custody. The accused remains in custody and his next court appearance is
scheduled for March 7. Laura died in hospital on Sept. 26, one day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight in Mackie Park, while walking through the forest in the 8200block of 110th Street in North Delta. Her murder shook the community. Delta police Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the accused was arrested early Sunday morning near the Surrey-Delta border but she wouldn’t say where.
Delta is calling the City of Vancouver out over its handling of greenhouse gas emissions at the landfill in Ladner. Civic politicians learned this week the Vancouver Landfill’s gas collection system is working well below provincial standards. The system is supposed to help control odours and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Provincial regulations state the landfill gas collection system must be at least 75 per cent efficiency to control odour and emissions. In 2009, it was working at only 41 per cent efficiency. “This information is startling,” chief administrative officer George Harvie told Delta council Monday night. “This landfill is not working properly.” Delta Mayor Lois Jackson called the information a “little bit of a kick in the teeth” after all the work on the Zero Waste initiative over the last year. Delta staff launched an investigation after receiving a number of odour complaints from residents in December. “The same odours were noted in the winter of 2009 and there have been many anecdotal comments noting that the odour has been more pronounced over the past two years,” Mike Brotherston, manager of climate action and environment, stated in his report to civic politicians. Staff reviewed the 2009 annual report to the province, which is a requirement of the landfill’s operational certificate, and noticed the section dealing with landfill gas collection was missing.

ALR bid needs public’s support Delta will apply to land commission to return Southlands to reserve if idea endorsed at next week’s hearing BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
It looks like Delta could finally get around to making an application regarding the controversial Southlands property. At a public hearing to be held next Tuesday, residents will get a chance to voice their opinions on another version of a Tsawwassen Area Plan, this one written by CAO George Harvie. What’s been the most talked about, and perhaps most surprising, part of the plan is Harvie’s recommendation for the municipality to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission to place the 538-acre Southlands back in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The property was removed from the ALR in the early 1980s after an application by Delta council and the property owner at the time, George Spetifore, which was followed by a provincial order-in-council. The land commission was against the decision to take the property out of the ALR.
The Southlands was removed from the ALR in the early 1980s by the Social Credit government of the day. In 1992, just three years after the failed and highly contentious TDL housing proposal for the Southlands, the municipality was still grappling with the future of the property as it tried to pass a new area plan for Tsawwassen. At the time, it requested the provincial government rescind the order-in-council of January 1981 and place the property, which was over 700 acres at that time, back in the ALR. That request was denied. Commission executive director Colin Fry told
the Optimist last week the municipality had been informed that rescinding the order-in-council would not have automatically placed the land back in the reserve, so a new application was needed to the commission. Council never sent an application despite writing to the land commission for direction and receiving forms to complete. Coun. Bruce McDonald, who was on Delta council during those turbulent days of the early ‘90s, said the community had already gone through a long and
trying time getting an area plan approved. He noted the new plan designated the property as agricultural. “As I recall, I think at the time it was just a case where it was agriculturally zoned, it’s not going anywhere, and it had been very contentious through the process, so why keep picking at that scab,” he said. Back when the government declined council’s request the new area plan was about to go to a public hearing. The recommendation, which was not supported by the Delta
FILE PHOTO
Farmers’ Institute, was to designate the entire property as agriculture. Also in 1992, the late George Hodgins, who had acquired the Southlands, began floating his Heritage Place housing plan, although a formal application was never submitted. He also warned he could end up filing a lawsuit against Delta if the area plan was approved. In the fall of that year, after the area plan was approved, council agreed to downzone a strip of the Southlands fronting 56th
Street from duplex to agricultural. Then mayor Beth Johnson said the actions were consistent with the new area plan. Coun. Ann Claggett, though, insisted council was not being fair to the property owner. The following summer, Hodgins informed Johnson and the rest of council (except Claggett) they could be subject to a $500 million lawsuit, alleging they had conspired to prevent him from developing the property. The last straw, he said, was the rejection of an application to subdivide an 80-acre parcel into four 20acre hobby farms. The lawsuit never went to court, though. The regional district acquired the land east of Boundary Bay Road in the mid-1990s to expand Boundary Bay Regional Park, but not much happened with the rest of the property until a few years ago when Sean Hodgins, George’s son, put forward a new plan that combined agricultural urbanism with housing.
What ALC decides if application made is anyone’s guess
Should Delta council get the green light from residents to make an application to put the Southlands back in the Agricultural Land Reserve, the end result could be anyone’s guess. That’s what Coun. Bruce McDonald had to say when asked about the possibilities that could result from the contentious recommendation in the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan. If Tsawwassenites support the recommendation at next Tuesday’s public hear-
ing, the municipality will make a formal application to the Agricultural Land Commission. It remains to be seen how much, if any, of 538-acre property would be placed into the reserve by the commission. If some of the land is not put in the ALR, it could result in a potentially odd zoning situation for Delta, with property zoned agricultural but not deemed good enough for the reserve. It’s not clear what would happen next if that
were the case. “It would certainly be an interesting situation to be in. That’s why at council I said be careful what you wish for because if the ALC comes in and says the 75-acre forest (in the Southlands), for example, has never been farmed and they do not think it’s appropriate to go back into the reserve, where are we then?” asked McDonald. “It’s total speculation, but the bottom line is the owner is going to be able to make presentations to the com-
mission, as I understand it, but we’re currently going to get the complete list how this all works.” McDonald noted an application to the ALC would hopefully resolve the issue about farming on the Southlands, as far as what’s considered viable land, although issues would still remain about the environmental sensitivity of the property. He also noted Delta would have to look the issue of irrigation and drainage should the prop-

erty be placed back in the reserve. “We are then going to have to spend some significant money,” he added. ALC executive director Colin Fry said should an application be submitted, the commission would conduct a process in an open and transparent manner. “We will invite responses, submissions from the property owners. I can’t speak ultimately for the commission how they choose or how they choose to proceed, but there is a
possibility that they may want to engage in direct dialogue with the landowners,” he explained. As far as the possibility of such a large site in the Lower Mainland being added into the ALR, Fry remarked an application of this nature would be the “first of this magnitude in my recent memory.” Private landowners often apply to have parcels placed into the reserve but applications by local governments are less frequent, he said. Tsawwassen’s Jim Martens is planning to stage a local version of the historic Oberammergau Passion Play. “To do a play of this nature is quite phenomenal,” he said, noting the production dates back to 1634 and is staged every 10 years in Oberammergau, Germany. It has an “incredible history,” he said. Martens is planning to hold the play, which tells the story of Jesus, at the South Delta Baptist Church in the summer of 2012 with a cast of around 300. “I’m pretty excited about the whole endeavour, There’s lots to know and lots to learn,” said Martens, a retired drama teacher and principal who now heads up a small publishing company and a theatre company. Martens, currently working on a script, said he’s planning to set up a nonprofit society for the local
production. In addition to the very large cast, he expects the crew to be to around a similar number. Help will be needed for set construction, costumes, lighting and sound. report and fell to the floor when her chair tilted back. “I felt very stupid. Bill Wakefield (former assistant superintendent) looked down at me and said, ‘I guess you didn’t agree with that statement, did you?’” She recalled some not so pleasant times, including a massive tax protest that took place during a 1986 meeting when she belonged to a minority slate on the board. The board was blamed for what was deemed by residents as massive and unnecessary school tax increases. Also in that interview she said that despite the difficult decisions she had to make, she had few regrets. In fact, her biggest regret was leaving the board table before a new school board office was built. “When I see the new municipal hall it makes me burn — a slow burn — because we don’t have the financial freedom to do that,” she said. In 1993 Porter had been promoted to program manager of obstetrics and gynecology at Richmond Hospital, and intended to

She served on the Delta school board from 1981 until she retired in 1993, spending nine of those years as chairperson. Porter, who raised her four children while working as a registered nurse and manager at Richmond Hospital, helped guide the school district though a period of student growth, labour unrest, fiscal restraint and education reform. In a 1993 interview prior to the general election, in which she chose not to run, Porter reflected on some of the good times and bad. One of her earliest recollections was also one of her most humiliating, laughed Porter, telling the story how she nodded off while listening to an administrator’s

MURPHY’S LAW What’s most popular with a party isn’t necessarily what’s best for it. The governing Liberals reach a critical crossroads this Saturday when they select a new leader from the four candidates left standing after what’s been a long, although not terribly eventful, campaign. The selection of Gordon Campbell’s successor will give British Columbians their next premier, but more importantly than that, at least from a Liberal perspective, is it will determine the party’s fortunes going forward. Choose wisely and they could hold the NDP at bay in the next election; make the wrong choice and their decade-long grip on power could well slip away. Critical to this selection is the necessity for members to make a distinction between a candidate who might be popular internally and one who most appeals to the masses. Sometimes that’s the same person, but in other cases, and this just might be one of them, it’s not. Opinion polls suggest Christy Clark is the most marketable of all the Liberals to the public, partly due to her absence from the controversies of provincial politics for the past half-dozen years, but as a result of that time off, she clearly lags behind in caucus support. Kevin Falcon appears to have as much backing as anyone within the party and that all-important business community, but his approval rating with voters as a whole trails Clark. Then there’s George Abbott, almost everyone’s compromise candidate, who not only has strong endorsement from within, but is also seen as enough of a moderate he’s not going to turn voters away. With former attorney general Mike de Jong also in the race, it’s a formidable quartet of cabinet table veterans, but as much as their resumes might look alike, they’re not necessarily held in the same regard by B.C. voters. Liberal members would be wise to remember that when they cast their ballots this weekend. *** I must correct the statement I made in this space last Wednesday with regard to the ALC rejecting a Delta application to have the Southlands included in the ALR in 1992. That was incorrect. Around that time, Delta requested the province rescind the order-in-council that had previously removed the Southlands from the ALR. When that was rejected, Delta inquired about the process to apply to the ALC, but never followed through on that. I apologize for creating any confusion.
Revised area plan still out of step with residents’ wishes STEVE GRAHAM
COMMUNITY COMMENT Delta council sent the previous Tsawwassen Area Plan, developed and sponsored by a citizens’ committee headed by councillors Bruce McDonald and Heather King, to public hearing last September. The public vigorously opposed the proposed plan at the hearing held the following month. Weary of listening to public opposition, the mayor and McDonald moved “that council terminate this public hearing and abandon Bylaw 6877;” notwithstanding that Section 890 of the Local Government Act doesn’t specifically allow for public hearings to be cancelled midstream. Council then directed the CAO to develop a new area plan. George Harvie prepared a revised plan without evident public input and council unanimously voted to send it to the required public hearing on March 1. This will be your only kick at the can. I will try to demonstrate why the revised area
plan should be rejected with two examples. Currently there is a four-storey height limit in Tsawwassen. The area plan committee proposed raising this to six storeys. In the Ipsos Reid poll commissioned by Delta, 60.6 per cent of respondents preferred retaining the limit of four storeys, while only 21 per cent stated a preference for “five to six storeys.” Notwithstanding this clear expression of public sentiment, councillors Robert Campbell, Scott Hamilton and Anne Peterson stated at the Sept. 13 council meeting they want a six-storey limit in the area plan. Accordingly the rejected area plan allowed for six storeys for buildings with extraordinary social value (presumably defined by campaign contributions). The revised area plan drops even this modest constraint and raises the general height limit to six storeys. So, 60 per cent of the public doesn’t want six-storey buildings and 100 per cent of council does, per the council vote of Sept. 13. Whom are they working for? Another example is the 85 per cent rule. This obscure rule inhibits slice-and-dice infill zoning of residential neighbourhoods. It currently applies in Tsawwassen, but not in Ladner where, in my view, the cumulative effect of spot

zoning and densification has been harmful. The previous area plan proposed to remove the 85 per cent rule in central Tsawwassen, although Hamilton commented at the Sept. 13 meeting that he would prefer to remove it throughout Tsawwassen. Well, it has been removed everywhere in the revised area plan. Good for Hamilton; not good for the neighbourhoods of Tsawwassen. A careful reading of the revised area plan shows it to contain several other components the public objected to the last time around, and the revised plan deserves no more public support than the last one. It is not hard to tell there is a serious problem when 100 per cent of council votes to support a specific policy that is opposed by 60 per cent of the public and a general policy of densification that did not have broad support at the public hearing last October. This council appears to be pulling another fast one, and is counting on the public to be too weary of the process to participate this time. I suggest it is in your best interest to participate once again at the public hearing, or by email, and recommend rejecting the proposed area plan and extending the existing one.

It is not necessary, given the port’s own numbers don’t support the need. Prince Rupert’s port is closer to Asia and therefore its numbers have risen. Additionally, the Panama Canal is being widened for traffic to the Eastern ports from Asia. We should start action now to stop the devastation of our living environment. Absent legislators lose public’s respect
Editor: Please tell me how residents of B.C. can have any respect for political processes in this province when the legislature, which had not met for almost nine months, is called back for only four days. Sorry, they have lost all respect. Is it any wonder that voter turnout is at an all time low? The legislature should have been meeting. Last time I looked this was supposed to be a parliamentary democracy. Making decisions in cabinet and/or in the premier’s office is not democracy. Making major decisions on how our province is to be managed and run without these issues having been introduced and debated in the legislature is nonsense. It is disgusting, a sham. The whole shabby political process in B.C. is broken. It needs to be scrapped and made to work as a proper democracy. MLA Vicki Huntingdon is doing a good job and as best that she can, but she is hobbled without the opportunity to sit and represent her constituents in the legislature.

Kevin Falcon and Gordon Campbell, it must be emphasized this is not yet a done deal. Burns Bog Conservation Society has launched a legal action in federal court against this ridiculous waste of good farmland and the threat to Burns Bog. A very successful fundraiser was held by South Fraser Action Network in support of that action and supporters can donate via www.sfan.ca or www.burnsbog.org. Now, we are told Port Metro Vancouver has plans to build a second terminal (three more berths) at Roberts Bank. This means more loss of valuable land, more loss of vital habitat on the most important bird migration route in Canada and more disruption for the

I didn’t believe it then and I still don’t. The SFPR has been used to open up farmland for industrial development. Was it the reason for building it in the first place? My husband is a less-ismore kind of guy. So when he heard about something called “the-100-thing challenge” he began to talk about it. And talk about it. And talk about it some more. “It was created by this guy named Dave,” he told me breathlessly. “This brilliant guy named Dave.” “Who’s Dave?” I asked. “I have no idea,” he said. “A blogger. Anyway, he came up with this brilliant plan: to try to cut down his belongings to just 100 things. Isn’t that brilliant?” I knew what would be coming. What would be coming would be “the suggestion.” “The suggestion” would contain multiple observations. That we might not need a drawer full of twist ties, say, or a cupboard full of 37 vases, or a bathroom closet full of 229 hotel soaps. “I like my hotel soaps,” I said. “They remind me of trips.” The husband ignored my trip talk. “Listen,” he said. “We could do it. Seattle Optometrist Helps Legally Blind to See Again
Dr. Ross Cucic uses miniaturized telescopes to help those with vision loss to keep reading, writing and driving. Just because you have macular degeneration or other eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, doesn’t mean you must give up the things you love, like driving. “People don’t know there are doctors who are very experienced in low vision care,” says Dr. Cusic, a low vision optometrist. Macular Degeneration is the most common eye disease amongst the senior population. As many as 25% of those over 65 have some degree of degeneration. “Our job is to !gure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning visually.” Says Dr. Cusic. Low vision devices are not always expensive. Some reading glasses cost as little as $375 and some magni!ers under $100. Every case is different because people have different levels of vision and different desires. “These telescopic glasses make driving much easier.” Says Bonnie Dimuth, a low vision patient. “The best part is I can now see my grandchildren’s face so much more clearly.” Bonnie, (pictured to the right) was helped with two pairs of glasses: Special $475 prismatic glasses let her read the newspaper and bioptic telescopes to continue driving.
Bioptic telescopic glasses were also prescribed to Carol Buckles. “I wanted to be able to keep driving and doing all the things I love in life. These telescope glasses not only allow me to read signs from a farther distance, but make driving much easier. De!nitely worth the $1950 cost.” If you or someone you love is struggling with vision loss, call today. Dr. Cusic sees patients in his of!ces in Kirkland, Bellingham, Olympia, and Vancouver, WA. Flooring trends for 2011 From carpet to hardwood, many flooring options are going green
W
hile many people are turning to laminate and hardwood flooring, carpet is still the number one choice in this area. Yvonne Beeksma, manager at Delta Carpets, says the cool, wet climate here on the West Coast tends to steer more people towards carpet when looking at flooring choices for a home. It lends more warmth to a room. And a big trend in carpet for 2011 is texture.
Monochromatic patterns — big or small, subtle or distinct — integrated into the carpet can add interest and texture to a room. “Texture and pattern are huge,” she says. Delta Carpets, however, isn’t just about carpet. The company, which has been owned and run by the Beeksma family since 1967, has filled its 2,500-square-foot Ladner showroom with samples of a host of different CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Introducing Dustless Sanding The Atomic DCS® Difference
We are also in the Vancouver Home & Garden Show, March 2 - 6

Riding for my Brother Mark
Traditional hardwood floor sanding is typically an extremely dusty process—a dust-storm in your home, lingering dust in your air-ducts, and a cleanup headache that feels like it will never end.
@ Vancouver Convention Centre, Booth # 713
I lost my brother to cancer in January 2000. He was an avid cyclist and we used to ride many miles together. I decided that this was the year to do the Ride to Conquer Cancer in his honour. You can help me fight for the cure by donating online @ www.conquercancer.ca Rider: Ron Teljeur Rider #: 253838-5
BonaKemi offers you a cleaner, healthier and faster choice with the Atomic Dust Containment Systems, which virtually eliminate the dust. BonaKemi’s elegant waterborne finishes are extremely durable, environmentally responsible, and have no toxic fumes so you and your pets don’t have to move out of your house during refinishing.
Acorn is donating part of our contracts to the ride: 10¢/sf - sand & finish 15¢/sf - prefinished installs 20¢/sf - site-finished installs
All our work is now dustless and we have remained competitive while offering the best value.
TRC - one of our suppliers, is donating 5¢/sf on all flooring we purchase prior to June 15

flooring choices — from carpet to vinyl, hardwood, laminate, cork and ceramics. As consumers become more ecologically minded, the demand for environmentally friendly products has increased, making green options a huge trend this year. “As consumers, we’re all very aware of our world... we want to make conscious decisions,” Beeksma says. One of Delta Carpets’ main suppliers, Mohawk Industries, is the largest recycler of pop bottles. The plastic bottles are broken down and woven into a material that can be used to make carpet, says Delta Carpets owner Trevor Beeksma. For hard flooring options, many customers are looking for more eco-friendly choices such as responsibly harvested cork, renewable bamboo or hardwoods manufactured using green technology from sustainable forests. Committed to helping customers from start to finish, Yvonne says Delta Carpets carries a line of floor cleaners that are safe enough to drink. When looking at new flooring, whether it’s for one room or the whole house, there are a few things to consider. “A lot is lifestyle,” Yvonne says. “Be realistic with what will work in your home.” Aside from what looks good aesthetically, customers need to consider who uses the room and how often. Some choices, such as cork, don’t perform well in high traffic areas. In the end, Yvonne says, you’ll know it when you see it and she recommends taking home different samples before making that final determination. “It’s an emotional decision.” JESSICA KERR

How to get that perfect finish
T
he fastest and most cost-effective way to spruce up the interior of your house is to give your house a fresh coat of paint. Choosing a paint colour might be the most fun part of painting, but don’t overlook
the real work. Here’s how to achieve a perfect finish, courtesy of DIY Network Canada’s Fresh Coat. If you’re planning on painting the trim, walls and ceiling, paint the trim first. For an ultra-smooth finish, sand the trim between coats. Before you start painting the walls, give them a good cleaning. (TSP works especially well.) This will ensure the paint really adheres to the walls. To get a seamless finish and avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge on your roller. If you’re painting a very large space, consider mixing several cans of paint in a large bucket. This will ensure that you have a consistent colour throughout the room. If you’re using tape along edges to achieve a straight line, let the paint dry, then cut the tape loose. - SOURCE: DIY NETWORK CANADA POSTMEDIA NEWS
Warm up with a new coat of paint It’s possible to cheer up and warm up with a new paint colour, say the paint pros at Canadian paint brand Sico. From timeless denim blue and earthy clay and wood tones, to leafy greens, strawberry reds and sunny yellows, Sico’s 2011-2012 paint palette is dominated by
warm, homey and comforting colours. It’s a reflection of the public mood, says Dominique Pepin of Sico. Also look for warm shades of coral as well as dazzling hues such as hot pink and lime green. CO is a by-product of burning gas, oil and other fuels. Everything from a blocked chimney to an improperly installed gas hot water heater can cause it to accumulate indoors, impeding the blood’s ability to carry oxygen through the body and resulting in headaches, drowsiness, even death. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless, which means it can accumulate without knowing. Infants and seniors may be particularly vulnerable to CO poisoning. Preventing CO Poisoning

• Never run a car, lawn mower or barbecue in a closed garage: CO can spread into your home. • Install a CSA or UL-approved CO detector. They’re available at Home Depot, Canadian Tire and other stores starting around $30. A dual battery/electric version is best, or at least one of each type so you’re protected in case of battery failure or power outage. Follow alarm placement, battery replacement and other instructions. Test detectors once a month. Caution: A smoke alarm is not a carbon monoxide detector, nor vice-versa. You need both. If your detector sounds, call 911. If anyone is suffering from nausea, dizziness or other CO-poisoning symptoms, leave the home immediately. PATRICK LANGSTON POSTMEDIA NEWS

One aspect of home design that all interior designers agree on is the ability of lighting to transform a space. Not sure where to begin? Grab The Home Lighting Effects Bible, a new book by lighting specialist Lucy
Martin. Martin walks readers through the principles of good lighting, pointing out that different rooms have different lighting requirements. She explains the difference between task lighting and ambient lighting and, through

Mix it up! From patchwork to patterns and modern to retro, bold, anything-goes decor is all the rage for 2011
T
en years ago, it was easy to get a handle on decorating trends. A little faux wenge wood, a set of sky-blue-and-brown graphic bed sheets, and a whole lot of beige stuff in your all-beige house and you were in style. But whose house was that anyway? And where was the personal stamp?

“Each piece will read like an art piece,” Gibson explains.
The great thing about these “self-expressive times” is that anything you buy this season will stay in your style for years to come, especially if you love it.

Admittedly, the many (sometimes conflicting) trends these days will make you dizzy. Plus, with websites and blogs reporting on the latest and greatest at warp speed, it’s hard to decipher what was last year, five years ago or even five minutes ago. But take a look at all the fabulously eclectic homes in magazines for 2011 and you’ll see that this broad spectrum of trends is a good thing.
Proudly serving Tsawwassen & Ladner since 2001
We’ve come a long way in the past decade, and it’s simply pointless to worry about any one single trend trajectory: It’s all about the mix.
Freshen up for the new year No need to start from scratch. What I’m suggesting is that you add a couple of cushions, a new entryway bench, or perhaps wallpaper in the powder room. “But no theme-room decorating and steer clear of blatant knock-offs or anything that looks cheap,” says stylist and trendsetter Arren Williams. Shop for things that will last — items you can touch, hold and sit on — things that feel real. “Be inspired by the trends, not a slave to them,” he says. I love seeing what’s new. Trend stories were my editorial beat for a long time. So without further ado, here’s what we’ll be seeing in 2011.

Wood Wood has been a huge trend on the rise since Fall 2009.
In 2011, it will be all over everything from bowls and plates to pillows and towels as well as large applications like furniture.
The relaxed look and ecological aspect of wood tempers the gloss of lacquered furniture and accessories.
Big colour Hello bright, clear, cheery colours. Think of the saturated colours in the rainbow (just don’t use them all together!).
Dark and moody We’ve started to see black and navy rooms featured on the covers of magazines and we’re going to see plenty more.
Belgian farmhouse linen On the flip-side of colour and pattern, the Belgian farmhouse or linen look is still going strong. It’s just become a little more gilded with elements such as gold lamp bases and metallic linen.
In response to greige and pastel colours, navy, black and slate-grey paint is going up on walls.
The look is moody with deep sand-coloured walls, linen upholstery, and unfinished and raw-looking woods.
Military hues “I think we’re going to see a lot of military colour influences,” says designer Tommy Smythe, whom you may have seen on the shows Design Inc. or Sarah’s House.
It’s easy to live with and ideal for anyone who wants a neutral backdrop for brightly coloured and patterned pillows, throws and accessories. Vintage accessories and toys for kids’ rooms Parents are looking for toys and accessories that remind them of their childhood. Vintage-inspired and retro children’s accessories and toys are a big trend, such as Gary Taxali for Indigo’s line of inexpensive wooden toys. This look feels like a time capsule of my childhood playroom.
White, gold and colourful accessories (a mix of mod and trad) keep the look fresh.
“Khaki, army green, beige and battleship grey — mostly (from) off the runways, but also because after the global recession, people are gravitating to the relative safety of neutral palettes,” he says. Black and white We’ll see black-and-white patterned rugs, pillows, wallpaper and bedding punctuated by colour. But no damask, please. I know I said it’s hard to decipher trends — that was so 2005. The Delta/Richmond chapter of the Council of Canadians is hosting a social evening this Friday to help raise funds to support the Canadian Boat to Gaza. This boat will join the Freedom Flotilla 2 sailing the end of March to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. “This blockade of Gaza,” according to event co-ordinator Bob Ages, “restricts both bringing needed supplies into Gaza and allowing goods to leave Gaza. So in addition to starving the population, the blockade denies Palestinians the ability to trade with the world, further suffocating them.” At the fundraiser, Kevin Neish will report on his experience as a volunteer on the humanitarian ship Mavi Marmar and his capture after last May’s Israeli attack on the ship and the murder of nine civilians

Pacers & Sun Devils face must win situations Fri.
Sr. boys basketball teams look to extend their seasons when Valley tourney gets underway with round of 32 STORIES BY MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The season will be on the line Friday when the Delta Pacers and South Delta Sun Devils senior boys basketball teams open play at the Fraser Valley “AAA” Basketball Championships. The Pacers have been seeded 16th for the 32-team event after their impressive fourth place showing at last week’s Fraser Valley South West playoff tournament. Delta surprised the 14th ranked North Delta Huskies 72-46, then hung tough with White Rock Christian before falling 71-60 in the semifinals. The Ladner school also battled hard in the third place game, losing 84-74 to Seaquam last Friday. The Pacers will face 17th seed Abbotsford Collegiate at Terry Fox secondary in Port Coquitlam. A win would put them up against the host and top seed Ravens next Monday, but more importantly, it would extend their season by at least two games as the tournament becomes double knockout after the opening round. The 18th seed South Delta Sun Devils
will be in Pitt Meadows where they will be up against the 15th seed MEI Eagles of Abbotsford. The Sun Devils established some momentum by defeating North Delta 83-76 to secure fifth place. It was their first win over the Huskies in three tries. “It was something we needed to do to move forward,” said South Delta head coach James Johnson. “We had to prove we can beat a team that was ahead of us (in the standings) as there is no way all four teams from our league will be going to the provincials. We gained some confidence from the Seaquam game and knew what we needed to do to be successful.” Johnson, who took over the coaching duties three weeks ago after Steve McGilligan left for New Zealand, says he is getting more comfortable in his new role. Some quality practice time this week will help even more, heading into Friday’s do-ordie tilt. “From a distance, I was familiar with the personnel but now I know the personalities too,” he said. “This week will be a good time for them to get an even better feel for me as a coach.”

Delta athletes have returned home with a number of medals following the first week of competition at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax. It was a golden Games for Nic Petan, Macoy Erkamps and Tristan Jarry. The Delta trio helped Team B.C. capture the men’s hockey competition with a 7-4 victory over Quebec last Friday. The gold medal game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 10,500 — the largest attendance for a single event in the Games history. It was also B.C.’s first gold in men’s hockey since 1979 when the competition featured junior “B” players. It is now an under 16 tournament. B.C. got off to a somewhat of a slow start — going 1-2 in round-robin play with losses to Quebec (5-4) and Ontario (5-1). It was still good enough for a quarter-final berth and that’s when B.C. started to roll with wins over Manitoba and Ontario — setting the stage for redemption against Quebec as

Avalanche. A goal from Shona Bal earned an all-important tie against the hosts, while South Delta nearly battled back from a three-goal deficit in an impressive 3-2 loss to the Avalanche. A 2-1-1 record and better goal production was enough to edge out Surrey and earn a rematch with North Shore. The South Delta girls were determined to give the powerful Avalanche a run for the gold and they did just that in a 3-1 loss, ending

Girls teams from the South Delta Minor Hockey Association typically have good representation at the Surrey Super Heart Tournament each February and this year was no different. South Delta’s Atom, PeeWee C1 and Bantam teams all came out to show what our little community can do. This tournament brings in teams as far away as 100 Mile House and has always served up stiff competition. Although all three local entries played well, it was the Pee Wee C1 team that managed to advance to the championship game. South Delta came out strong on the Friday with two big wins. Goals from Brooklyn Hawksworth, Lucy Everett and Natalie Lester produced a 4-3 victory over Abbotsford. Next was a 2-0 result against 100 Mile House, with unassisted goals by Taylor Kirk and Paisley Wallace. Saturday’s schedule provided the girls with a big challenge as the hometown favourites from Surrey were up first, followed by the undefeated North Shore

In Memoriam
June 26, 1927 ~ February 16, 2008
Doug was born May 12, 1917, Vancouver, British Columbia. He grew up with his parents and brother, Alfred, on a homestead outside of Smithers, BC. As a young man, Doug worked in the lumber camps until he went to college in the USA to obtain his Diploma in Aircraft Engineering. By the time he had finished his education, WWII had broken out in Europe. When it became clear that the war was headed toward Britain, Doug joined the Royal Canadian Air Force January 1940, only to be told Canada was not involved in the war at that time. With their permission, in the Summer of 1940 Doug then travelled to Britain and joined the RAF (British Air Force) and served with them, maintaining their aircraft in the north of Scotland. When Canada then decided to send troops into the conflict in 1941, Doug was absorbed back into the RCAF contingent over there. During a weekend furlough in the Summer of 1942, Doug and his best friend travelled from England to Wales, during a blackout, to attend a dance that was being held at the Cinderalla Ballroom in The Mumbles, Swansea. There he met two sisters. He was at once smitten by Irene Young, a young nurse. After, he could not get her out of his mind and knew, with certainty, that she was the one he would spend the rest of his life with. They married in Swansea, March 15, 1943. Once married, Doug could not wait to get Irene to Canada and safety. Arrangements were made for her to travel to Canada and wait for him in Halifax. On leave, he met up with Irene there and made arrangements for her to travel to his parent’s home in Smithers, BC. When the war was over, Doug travelled back to British Columbia to bring his wife and young son, Kenneth, born January 19, 1945 in Prince Rupert, while he was overseas, to Vancouver, BC. While living in Point Grey and working at the Air Force Base on Sea Island, Richmond, their daughter, Claire, was born May 3rd, 1947. Doug’s Air Force career took him and his family back to Britain twice more for several years each time. Between the tours in Britain, at Luffingham then Langar, he served at Camp Shilo, Brandon, Manitoba. While living near Brandon, Doug became a member of the Brandon Masonic Lodge and remained so until his death. In 1955 the family returned to Canada and waited for housing at Sea Island, living there until Doug was transferred to Downsview, Toronto, Ontario in 1962. Spring of 1963, Doug was sent to Yemen, in the Middle East, to be part of a peacekeeping contingent for six months. His job was to keep the aircraft flying while dealing with all the damage the sand did to the engine parts and while dodging bullets that were constantly being fired over the walls that protected the enclave. After returning to Downsview in the late Fall, 1963, Doug worked on the base until his retirement from the Forces in the Summer of 1966. Once retired, Doug and Irene returned to Richmond, BC., where he went to work for Pacific Western Airlines, providing both with the opportunity to once again travel the world, visiting: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, all of continental Europe, Ireland, Japan, England, Wales, Mexico, throughout the USA, spending many winters in Yuma, Arizona. After Arizona, they spent several winters in Aruba (three months each year). When Irene‘s back made it difficult to travel so far, they spent the next couple of winters in Hawaii. They made many friends throughout their travels and they kept in touch with them all each Christmas for many, many years. For so long they had been inseparable, with Doug always by Irene’s side. They had been married for almost 68 years before Irene passed away on December 13, 2010. By that time, the family had already been told that Doug’s health was severely compromised and he would decline rapidly. He had been suffering from the ravages of Parkinson’s Disease and had been legally blind and hearing impaired during the latter part of his life. Doug and Irene had been residents at the KinVillage Care Home, in Tsawwassen, BC during the last several years. After a difficult five weeks dealing with kidney failure, Doug passed away peacefully in his sleep, on January 20, 2011, to once again be with Irene. His daughter, Claire, had been by his side for much of the time after Irene died, making sure that Doug would not be lonely before it was his turn. The staff of the care home were wonderful, supportive and caring during Doug`s stay. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Irene, brother, Alfred, and son, Ken. He is survived by his daughter, Claire (Barry). He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren: Teresa (Bob) Sampson, Jim (Joanne) Kluey, Melissa (Shawn) Kluey, Craig (Sarah) Bamford, and Shannon (Michael) Grey. Also, by his eleven great-grandchildren: Ken, Connor, Jahcoba, Shannon, Lucas, Jaeden, Michael, Raven, Katrina, Trinity, Drake, extended family and many friends. Doug was a loving husband, great Dad, loving Grandpa and GreatGrandpa, knowledgeable co-worker, genius at fixing almost everything and helpful friend. He was a true gentleman, a wonderful role model, and will be sorely missed. A Joint Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011 at All Saints (Ladner) Anglican Church, located at 4755 Arthur Drive, in Ladner; the cross street is Ladner Trunk Road. All are welcome to the service. If you wish to attend the reception, following the celebration, please advise either Claire (604) 940-0236, or Melissa (604) 816-8466, or Terri (604) 940-2918, allowing us to give the caterer a rough head count for refreshments. Irene Teresa Bamford (née Young)
Irene was born June 5, 1920 in Swansea, S. Wales, Great Britain. During WWII Irene was a trained member of the Royal Nursing Corps. While on a weekend leave to visit her family in The Mumbles (a small fishing village to the west of Swansea) she attended a dance with her sister, Wynn, at the Cinderella Ballroom, where she met a Young Canadian Airman, Douglas Bamford. They danced, fell in love and were married nine months later, March 15, 1943. A short time later, Irene said goodbye to her Mother, Father and sister, and sailed aboard a troop hospital ship that was bringing wounded Canadian soldiers home. She waited in the Halifax area for Douglas to catch up with her. He then had to return to Britain in the Fall of 1944, while Irene headed west to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. She stayed with Doug`s parents in Smithers, for a while, until after their son, Ken, was born January 19, 1945 in Prince Rupert. When Doug returned to Canada, they moved to Vancouver, BC, living in the Point Grey area, where their daughter, Claire, was born May 3, 1947. As a military family, Irene and Doug had an opportunity to meet and get to know many people at the many bases that they lived on. Irene made many friends wherever they resided. She was often considered the nursein-residence at many of the bases, tending to many a child’s cuts and scrapes and anything else that did not require a physician’s attention. When Doug retired and went to work for Pacific Western Airline they carried on their travelling: going to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Jordan, Israel, Arabia, all of the mainland European countries, Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Mexico, throughout the U.S.A., then spent many winters as snow birds in Arizona. After Arizona they changed their winter venue to 3 months in Aruba for many years. When it became more difficult for Irene to travel such long distances, they spent their winters in Hawaii for two more years, making friends wherever they went. Irene and Doug were married for almost 68 years before she passed away in her sleep, after a very brief illness and congestive heart failure, on December 13, 2010, at the KinVillage Care Home, in Tsawwassen, where they both lived, with Douglas sleeping in an adjoining room. The staff of the care home were wonderful, supportive and caring during Irene`s stay. Many thanks to the two ladies who came from Delta Hospice on the last evening to sit with Irene during her last moments, while her daughter Claire took a brief break. Irene was predeceased by her son, Ken (Jennifer) and sister, Vera. She was survived by her husband, Douglas, her sister, Wynn, and her daughter, Claire (Barry). She will be sadly missed by her five grandchildren: Teresa (Bob) Sampson, Jim (Joanne) Kluey, Melissa (Shawn) Kluey, Craig (Sarah) Bamford, and Shannon (Michael) Grey. Also, by her eleven greatgrandchildren: Ken, Connor, Jahcoba, Shannon, Lucas, Jaeden, Michael, Raven, Katrina, Trinity, Drake, extended family and many friends. Irene helped and touched a lot of people`s lives during her life’s journey and will be sadly missed.
