Emergency personnel were called to the 400-block of 56th Street after passersby found a 48year-old man. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the call came in just after 3:30 p.m. “It does not appear that the cyclist was struck but may have either fallen off his bike or suffered a medical emergency causing him to fall to the ground.” Police closed 56th Street between 1st and 8th avenues while a helicopter was brought in to airlift the man to hospital. Brooks said he was airlifted to hospital because he was unconscious and the nature of his condition was not known. He did not sustain any serious injuries but was kept in hospital.

FHA plotting hospital’s future

FHA undertaking planning exercise that will help determine possible expansion of facilities and services BY

Fraser Health has begun a major planning initiative to map the future of Delta Hospital. Health authority officials and consultants were at the hospital Monday morning for an information session to explain the purpose of the planning exercise and how it will unfold. Noting the initiative will help business cases for future expansions of facilities and services, Marco Buccini, Fraser Health’s executive director of capital planning, said what’s needed is a clear vision how the hospital will fit with the rest of the health system. He told the audience of around 60, mostly hospital staffers as well as members of the hospital auxiliary and foundation, that an expansion of the diagnostic imaging department is one possibility for a future project. “I’m very excited. I know we’ll be doing some cool things on the site shortly,” said Buccini, who later said, “It’s not just about the buildings, it’s what’s inside.” Noting the plan will look both at both short and longer term goals, Buccini said partnerships would be key if there were to be any future expansion of services. “I think prioritization is the key because if there can

Sawycky, noting the auxiliary raised $500,000 for operating room equipment last year and has committed to purchasing a digital mammogram, said, “We are known as the little hospital that can and for good reason.” A draft of a plan is to be completed by the end of June. When the final plan is completed, it will contain a series of recommendations for the FHA board.

The municipality has banned the possibility of pay parking at the hospital, preventing a potential revenue stream for Fraser Health. Dr. Jeff Hornstein, who had just completed a surgery, got to address the crowd and Fraser Health officials, saying what’s

He said while the hospital does well as a centre where people can go in for a daytime surgical or imaging procedure, those with urgent needs like appendicitis need to be transferred to other facilities, which is less efficient. The public hearing could continue tonight if council didn’t hear from all speakers last night.

Delta police are looking for witnesses to a crash that kept Highway 10 closed for several hours Monday. At about 10:45 a.m., a Freightliner tractor-trailer was travelling west on Highway 10 when the driver failed to navigate a bend in the road, lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. The truck struck two vehicles before overturning in the ditch in the 11300block. One of the vehicles was crushed under the semi in the ditch. The driver had to be extracted from the vehicle and was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. “Delta police investigators did speak with witnesses at the scene but believe there are additional witnesses that have not been

The province’s Environmental Assessment Office is reviewing an application from the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation for the proposed Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project. The proposal involves jet fuel being barged up the Fraser River to an industrial site on the Richmond side of the south arm of the river, and then piping the fuel to the airport. Owned by a consortium of airlines that use YVR, the corporation wants fuel shipped to a new offloading facility at the foot of Williams Road in Richmond, about two kilometres east of Highway 99. It would then go into a 15-kilometre pipeline that would be built under Richmond. A report to Delta when the proposal first made news noted that approximately two to three barges with a 35 million-litre fuel capacity and a larger fuel tanker with up to an 80 million-litre capacity would initially offload fuel at the facility each month. In a presentation to Delta council two years ago, project director Adrian Pollard said the new fuel delivery system is needed because the existing one can’t keep up with current and future demand at YVR. Most of the fuel, he said, is delivered through a 40-year-old pipeline from a refinery in Burnaby. Because of the pipeline’s limited capacity, additional

This amounts to an average of 25 truck deliveries per day through Delta, and as many as 35 truck deliveries during peak times, he said. Don Pitcairn, president of Surrey’s United Naturists, said last week the project is unnecessary and the environmental risks far outweigh any fuel cost savings to the airlines using YVR. The proposed jet fuel delivery method threatens the estuary of B.C.’s largest river, the wildlife preserves in this region, wild salmon stocks, along with the public safety of residents living near the proposed pipeline, he said. The decision by the corporation not to consider rail shipments from Cherry Point in Washington State, where a large portion of YVR’s aviation fuel originates, needs to be seriously questioned, said Pitcairn. A 45-day public comment period on the environmental certificate application has begun and ends April 11. A public open house has been scheduled for Monday, March 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Executive Airport Plaza Hotel in Richmond.

Christy Clark tops three to win Liberal leadership race Liberal chances look much brighter in the next election with newcomer Christy Clark at the helm. That’s what a former Delta South Liberal MLA had to say about the newly elected leader of the party, although the riding’s current MLA is taking a less enthusiastic view. Clark won last weekend’s leadership convention, topping cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon, George Abbott and Mike de Jong in the process. Admitting she endorsed Abbott, former MLA Val Roddick was nonetheless pleased with the selection of Clark, saying she’ll provide new energy and ideas. “I think that Christy has matured a lot and been through a lot. I think she’s going to do it and a lot of people are a little nervous, but I think it’s fabulous that a woman is premier-elect of our province,” Roddick told the Optimist Monday. “She’s young, viva-

cious and she’s one smart cookie.” Clark, most recently a talk show host on CKNW, spent a decade in Victoria after first being elected in 1996. After the Liberals formed government in 2001, she was appointed minister of education and deputy premier in Gordon Campbell’s government. She left provincial politics a half dozen years ago. Perhaps the only reason Clark got almost no backing from caucus or cabinet members, Roddick noted, is because she was on the outside trying to get back into the political arena. “Most of the cabinet went with Kevin (Falcon), most of the other MLAs went with George (Abbott), and I think that’s because they know them. They know how they operate ... Christy has been out since 2005 in what we call the real world,” Roddick said. Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington, who had turned down overtures to run for the Liberals in the last election, is taking

a wait-and-see approach in assessing the new leader. Huntington said she wasn’t surprised Clark won, but believes she’ll have to put a stamp of change on the party. “I think she knows things have to change, but whether she really understands the depth of the need to see some reforms in the legislature and government remains to be seen.” Huntington was at a campaign stop Clark made in Tsawwassen in January where she broached the issue of the independent joining the Liberals. Clark said people feel like government doesn’t listen and she wanted to change the way it works. Huntington said she hasn’t been approached since Saturday’s leadership vote, acknowledging the new Liberal leader has to first meet and consolidate her own caucus. As far as voter unhappiness with the Liberals in this riding, Huntington said people in Delta South want some key changes.

MURPHY’S LAW It certainly says something about our Liberal government when a candidate with the support of just one member of caucus emerges victorious in the party’s leadership race. Christy Clark’s victory Saturday clearly signaled the need for change after a decade of Gordon Campbell rule, a concept party members as a whole grasped far better than those on the inside. I’m sure many Liberals, particularly those MLAs who served alongside her for a decade, found it galling that Clark positioned herself as the vehicle for that change by criticizing the government’s recent track record. That approach won her the endorsement of just one lonely backbencher in a 47-member caucus, yet at the end of the day, or at least when the ballots had been counted for a third time, Clark found herself with the support of 52 per cent of party members. Without taking anything away from the premier-elect, this was most definitely a pragmatic decision, an act of self-preservation that might have been hard to swallow for some, but ultimately viewed as necessary for the good of the party. It got me wondering: Would Clark have won the leadership if she had been at the cabinet table alongside Kevin Falcon, George Abbott and Mike de Jong for the last six years? Her youth and charisma would still have been appealing, but her trump card, the ability to distance herself from what has turned into an unpopular government, would have been lost. Ever since Campbell announced his resignation and the race to find a replacement got underway, it was pretty obvious the ideal candidate would not only have name recognition but would also be someone who didn’t carry the stench of recent government decisions. Clark was the only one to fit the profile, offering perhaps the best bet to lead the Liberals to a fourth term, yet her embrace from party elite was far from warm. It might have had something to do with her pot shots at government from her radio pulpit or the fact she had been out of caucus for six years, but it was clear she wasn’t a favourite of the Liberal establishment. Yet the rank and file had other ideas. Whether they were smitten or simply thought she was their best hope (probably a combination of the two), they lined up behind her, providing Clark with a lead in the opinion polls and from the first ballot onward. It seems to me the outcome was further evidence the government is out of step with the people — even those carrying Liberal membership cards.

COMMUNITY COMMENT What constitutes road rage? Does becoming enraged when the drivers around you seem intent on causing an accident qualify? If so, road rage is a familiar state of being for me. Recently, I ran a little experiment. I bought a hand-held tally counter to track how many dangerous-driving incidents I would witness over a period of two months. The two months are up, and now I can share the results. First, the parameters: What I consider to be dangerous acts of driving include everything from driving well below the speed limit in the left lane of a highway (which is much more dangerous than people realize) to weaving in and out of tight traffic at a high rate of speed without the courtesy of turn signals.

I gave drivers a click on the tally counter for each dangerous act, rather than a single click for a series of actions. So, the woman who forced me to slam on my brakes when she cut me off on 56th Street last week, then raced past a group of pedestrians to beat a changing light (which was red by the time she entered the intersection), received three clicks. Actually, I was very selective when it came to speeding. Speeding in the presence of pedestrians was a clickable offence, but speeding on a highway in a manner appropriate to the traffic and weather conditions was not. Now for the results: Over the course of two months I drove just under 900 kilometres and witnessed 191 dangerous acts on the roads. That averages to 2.1 incidents for every 10 kilometres driven! Keep in mind, 10 kilometres is about the distance from Ladner to Tsawwassen. I should note that the bulk of the 191 incidents occurred on highways and in Vancouver, Surrey and Richmond ... plenty in Richmond. It’s also important to know that most of the clicks were not cases of

aggressive driving, rather the result of a lack of skill or care on behalf of the driver. All in all, it was a pretty grim snapshot of the quality of drivers in the Lower Mainland. There are several actions our governments can take to make our roads safer, but I’ll just touch on one today: driver training. New drivers in B.C. are not adequately trained, either mentally or physically, to handle real-world driving. That’s why I would like to see us institute something akin to the Finnish model for licensing new drivers. In Finland, a nation famous for its skilled drivers, applicants requires 30 hours of driving instruction (including time on a “skid pad”) and 20 theory lessons. The new driver must then pass a theory test and a lengthy driving test in city traffic. That’s just to get the equivalent of an “N” licence. It gets even harder when you’re eligible to apply for a full licence. Comprehensive driver training is a long-term strategy, and the easy corner piece of the puzzle. Changing people’s attitudes towards driving, well, that’s a solidcolour centre piece.

Farmer continues struggle to improve low-lying land

Contributions for these pumps would have to come from both Delta and Surrey along with the senior levels that all want to maintain the farmer and his land. To my knowledge, some 40 years later little has been done to relieve this problem, giving Malenstyn no choice but to try and elevate his land or grow rice. Instead of punishing him, the responsible departments of government should either help him with his drainage problem or find a way to assist him in elevating his land so he can farm it without additional costs and delays. Perhaps sufficient information is already available to determine what is required to make this land viable for agricultural use and who should be contributing to the solution. Douglas Massey

Paved parking lot shouldn’t be a priority Editor: Re: Parking relief on the way for leisure centre users, Feb. 26 It surprises me that a municipal department that supports fitness suggests paved parking be added to the current lot at our leisure centre. It brings to mind a meeting with Coun. Bruce McDonald where we both suggested we needed to

pave paradise to put up a parking lot. In the latter case, the money earmarked for a paved lot was diverted to much-needed user recreation: thank goodness that legacy gave us Dugald Morrison Park with its two great fields. I have to suggest the $500,000 could go a long way to add to or complement the existing structures

or provide other muchneeded facilities to enhance or provide opportunities to existing field users to generate revenue or have conveniences. Parking is the last item we should need at a recreational facility. Shame on the parks and recreation department for taking an easy way out at our expense. Bob Kenward

so I suggest we put it on the next ballot and see what the ones who have enough leg power to get out and vote think.

Malenstyn is sincerely trying to carry on his family’s tradition by trying to elevate his land so he can produce the food we all desire. He has been forced to do this because of the present elevation of his land, which is some of the lowest in Delta, with insufficient elevation to sustain a fast enough run-off to clear the ditches and farmland. Compounding this is the increased run-off of storm water from the highlands of North Delta and southwest Surrey that fills the ditches and floods his land and others. As far back as 1967 when I was chairman of dikes and drainage, it was recognized that booster pumps were required in order to maintain a workable condition for the farm properties in the area.

Editor: Re: Fill required to make farm viable, Feb. 26 It is true there has been and still is illegal dumping of waste materials on agricultural land in Delta and nothing has been done despite many reports of it taking place. The Agricultural Land Commission does not have the manpower, funding or the direction to protect what lands are left in the Agricultural Land Reserve. By ignoring their responsibilities, the provincial and federal governments are slowly eroding the land and the farmers’ ability to exist. I grew up with Don Malenstyn’s grandparents, his father and uncle when they first moved to Delta in the late 1940s. They all were very successful farmers and contributed greatly to the community.

Big return on the arts for modest civic investment Editor: Re: Senior bureaucrat insists Delta supportive of arts community, Feb. 26 I was filled with confusion and dismay after reading the article. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz says, “In the past 10 years, Delta has provided significant capital grants to the arts council.” He goes on to state, “In the past decade, the municipality contributed about $850,000 towards renovations at North Delta’s

Firehall Centre for the Arts and the Tsawwassen Arts Centre purchase and loaned the Delta Arts Council an additional $275,000.” Firstly, it should be made clear the $850,000 was not from Delta but from the port authority, provided explicitly for use in arts and culture activities. Delta could not use this money directly and had to “partner” with a non-profit organization. Delta did “loan” the arts council $275,000 towards

the purchase, with a proviso the loan had to be paid back. The Tsawwassen Arts Centre (including the land) was purchased for $770,000: $70,000 from the Delta Arts Council, $425,000 from the port authority and the $275,000 loan from Delta. The arts council then renovated the old church and turned it into the arts centre, using its own money and money it was able to raise through donations. The arts council did, in

fact, repay the majority of the loan. The property was registered in the name of the Corporation of Delta, with the Delta Arts Council listed on title as the tenants. In addition, the Delta Arts Council was responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the building until last year. This is one of the buildings that Delta is now reclaiming. Secondly, the old fire hall in North Delta was slated for demolition and the arts council lobbied to save it.

The renovation costs were close to $500,000, which were paid using $425,000 of the port authority money and the balance, once again, being covered by the arts council and donations from local businesses and other non-profit organizations. The Delta Arts Council was also responsible for upkeep and maintenance of this building until last year. This is the second of the buildings Delta is now reclaiming. Thirdly, when Deltassist vacated the building next to the fire hall, the arts council, once again, stepped in and lobbied to take over the building. It spent over $75,000 renovating this building, which houses the Gallery & Gift Shop, the North Delta Potters’ Guild and studio space upstairs. This is the third building Delta is now reclaiming. It is of interest that Kuntz uses events that happened 10 years ago to demon-

strate how the Corporation of Delta supports arts and culture in Delta. Until this year, the Delta Arts Council received $52,300 per year from the municipality and managed three civic buildings with that money, rentals, class fees and fundraising. The communities have benefited greatly from the use of these buildings. I am waiting to see the success of Delta’s programming as well as the actual costs to the residents of Delta of operating the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, the Firehall Centre for the Arts and ArtSpace. I am quite confident it will cost more than $52,300 per year. Kuntz stated at a recent North Delta community planning meeting that it was a business decision. A good one or a bad one? Editor: Re: Senior bureaucrat insists Delta supportive of arts community, Feb. 26 I wanted to respond to two points in the recent article about the Corporation of Delta in regards to the arts. This is the second time when a member from the municipality has claimed $850,000 of their money was put into the arts in Delta. The truth is the money came from the Vancouver Port Authority, and that it was earmarked

specifically for the arts. The corporation was able to work with the Delta Arts Council to take advantage of this money. Without the Delta Arts Council, the corporation would have had to renovate and staff the facilities themselves, something I do not feel they were willing to do, and something the arts council did with limited staff and volunteers. I also wanted to touch on Delta’s support for the arts. Out of a $25.5 million budget for parks, recreation

and culture in 2010, $1.7 million is dedicated to culture, which includes the corporation’s programs and the museum. On the other hand, $15 million is committed to community recreation. So the arts gets approximately 10 per cent of what is spent on community recreation in a department that should more equitably represent all three areas. Delta is the only municipality amongst all our neighbouring communities

that does not have a civic run and operated facility for the arts. Much of the visual and performing arts that happen in Delta is volunteer run, saving the corporation a huge amount of money. There is a great deal locally that is worth supporting, but how many residents of Delta end up supporting the arts somewhere else by attending events in other municipalities? Complaints as noisy as planes Councillor says YVR’s efforts to reduce aircraft noise are paying dividends, although some would disagree BY

The Vancouver International Airport is making noticeable efforts to minimize airplane noise from disturbing South Delta residents, said Coun. Robert Campbell. “I live in the same neighbourhood as these letter writers. I’m going to stick my neck out and say I do not share their experience,” he said during a presentation by YVR officials. Campbell said noise from YVR over the last few years has, in fact, diminished thanks to initiatives that have been undertaken. “I think YVR should be commended for its job on this issue and when I’ve heard complaints the first thing I do is go on WebTrak and look it up and some of these things I just can’t understand how there’s a real complaint

in there. “I understand some people are more sensitive to noise than others, but I’m satisfied everyone is doing their best to manage those issues and I personally find I hear less airplane noise than I did five, six years ago. I don’t hear it in the middle of the night like I used to. I don’t hear it in the morning.” During the presentation to council, Anne Murray, YVR’s vice-president of community and environmental affairs, and aircraft noise and emissions specialist Mark Chang explained some of the initiatives underway to decrease noise from jet aircraft flying over residential areas. Transport Canada approved the airport’s five-year noise manage-

ment plan last year, which contains 16 initiatives put together with input from an aeronautical noise management committee that includes a Delta resident and civic staff member. Chang pointed out the airport has “a very sophisticated” noise tracking system with 20 monitoring terminals. Four new terminals were added last year, including one in Tsawwassen, joining two existing sites in North Delta. The airport also recently acquired a portable noise monitoring device that was used this summer in parts of South Surrey and North Delta as well as Vancouver. The equipment was most recently set up in Ladner and that data will be analyzed early next year, noted

Chang. Meantime, a new facility will soon open to reduce noise from nighttime maintenance work on aircraft testing their engines at the airport. Yet another initiative, which began this year at YVR, noted Chang, is quarterly noise information seminars that are free to the public. Regarding the ongoing concerns over overhead aircraft disturbing South Delta residents at night, Coun. Anne Peterson said there had been a previous discussion between council and YVR about flights taking place between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., the time most cargo planes depart or land. Noting YVR is a 24/7 operation, Chang said nighttime routings are in effect for pilots. One of the measures in place is a preferential runway system to ensure pilots take advantage of

Horoscopes, I believed, had about as much credibility as the words inside a fortune cookie or the leaves inside a teacup. If I wanted to know what my day would be like, I did not consult my horoscope. I looked at my daytimer, and at the weather forecast, and at the balance on my chequing account. Still, I am a Leo — and mighty proud of it. I don’t know why, exactly, except that a Leo is a lion, and lions, I figure, are a whole lot cooler than goats or rams or scorpions. Leos, they say, are creative, ambitious, confident, strong — and perhaps just a tiny bit bossy. I say all this, of course,

Boys basketball program now must decide on strategy for next season BY

The Delta Pacers boys basketball program is taking a wait-and-see approach before determining just how many of its talented juniors will be aged up to play at the senior level next season. The Juniors capped off a successful 2010-11 campaign with a top eight finish at the Fraser Valley Championships. Grade 9 Ryan Cowley, a 6-foot-4 forward, for certain will be skipping his final season to play three years of senior ball. At least three more players have the potential of joining him. “A lot is going to depend what they are doing in the off-season and if they are ready to take that step,” said Pacers junior coach Robin Wait. “We’re not going to rush them up, especially if they can have success by staying for another year at junior.” Wait is leaning towards returning to the senior ranks next season where he will be reunited with Lucas Goosen and Connor Rempel who

helped the Pacers reach the provincial tournament in 2010. Goosen enjoyed an outstanding Grade 11 year and will be one of the top point guards in the province. At the very least, key Grade 10s Will Schwan, Evan Messenger and Jamie Toor will be moving up with Cowley. “The potential is there to take a run (at a B.C. berth),” continued Wait. “It’s going to be a small rotation just like last year but at least we would have some depth at forward with this group.” The Pacers opened the Valleys with a 53-41 win over Tamanwais, then came roaring back from a late 16-point deficit to slip past Fleetwood Park, 54-48. They bowed out of championship contention with a 70-44 loss to fourth ranked and eventual champion White Rock Christian. A chance for a fifth place finish ended with a 54-53 defeat to Terry Fox. The Valley tourney featured five of the top 10 ranked teams in B.C.. “We led the whole way until they got an offensive rebound off a free throw and

The Delta Pacers capped a productive season with an appearance at last week’s Fraser Valley Grade 9 Boys Basketball Championships. With an abundance of talent at the Ladner school, a decision was made to proceed with a development team that played out of the Richmond Juvenile League to keep as many boys as possible playing basketball. “The boys have really made progress since their first game in a tough

Richmond division with marked improvement in fundamentals, team strategies, dynamics and sportsmanship. The boys should be proud of themselves as they were able to stay positive and not give up even when losing too much taller Richmond teams,” commented coaches Paul King, Andrew Blanco and Sean Clancy. The Pacers had their share of ups and downs over the season as the bench was shortened by injuries and sickness en route to posting only a .330 winning percentage. However, the boys played well against Seaquam in the Delta playdowns to earn a 48-36 victory to secure a Valley berth. The season ended with a 56-24 loss to Riverside. Other season highlights included a fifth place finish at their most recent tournament at Fleetwood. Tournament MVPs to date include: Daniel Chesshire, Aidan Phagura, Mike Thompson, Brett Lee, Cam

Dhaliwal, and Cody Yang. The team’s leading scorers included Adrian Blanco, Eric Goodman and Dhaliwal, while Daniel Cheeshire and Sammy Boukioud led the way in threes. From the foul line, the top free throw shooters were Byron King, Jake Lee and Yang. Best accuracy beyond the arc were Kyle Clancy (33.3 percent), Goodman (33.3) and Boukioud (31.3). Goodman was also the team’s leading rebounder with 74, including 51 at the defensive end. Matt Wegener, Blanco and Mike Thompson were also prominent in this category. Brock Morgan was among the team’s top shot blockers. The roster also included Gabriel George and Scott McKeen. The team also thanks the efforts of managers Ryan Nguyen and Jake Lee for their detailed stats and the additional support of Andy Salt, Shell Thompson, Byron Pannu and Wes Novix to make the season possible.

A small but determined group of athletes from the Winskill Dolphins Swim Cub travelled to Chilliwack for the B.C. “AA” Short Course Championships. With only five swimmers at the meet, Winskill made a big splash, getting five podium finishes and producing 13 top eight placements! Leading the charge was 15-year-old Travis Rogers who took home gold medals in the 200 and 400 freestyle events respectively. He also grabbed a silver medal in the 200 backstroke, getting out touched by mere 10ths of a second! Isaiah Rusak-Gillrie (11) lit up the lanes with six top eight finishes, including a pair of silvers in the 400 and the 1500 freestyle events. Swim-of-the-meet went to 12-year-old Rachel Yeo, who claimed fourth place in 200 backstroke by slashing an impressive 10 seconds off her previous personal best. Kathryn Reilly (10) competed in the 10 and Under Swim Star Challenge and finished seventh in the 50m butterfly. She also took five seconds off her previous best performance in the 200m individual medley. Battling illness and some strong competition in her first provincials, Victoria Simpson (15) still managed to finish 13th in both 100 and 20 back, and scratched two seconds off her 200 freestyle best time.

Ice Hawks take control

Nick Enegren turned aside 33 shots to earn the shutout as the Delta Ice Hawks took control of their quarter-final playoff series with the Grandview Steelers thanks to a 2-0 victory on Sunday. The result gave the Ice Hawks a 3-1 series lead and they had a chance to wrap it up last night on home ice. Cody Fidgett’s first period power play goal was all the Ice Hawks would need. Defenceman Ryan Mana sealed the win with an empty net goal in the final minute of play. The winner of the this series will face the Richmond Sockeyes in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League semi-finals. The Sockeyes swept the North Delta Devils after a 2-1 game four victory at Sungod Arena. The next round is slated to start Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at Minoru Arena.

Brent Seabrook has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 25-year-old blueliner from Tsawwassen was slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1. The deal is reportedly worth $29 million over the five years with a cap hit of $5.8 million per season. Seabrook played all his minor hockey in South Delta and spent one season with the Delta Ice Hawks where he was named rookie-of-the-year and led the league in playoff scoring as a 15-year-old. He then moved onto the Western Hockey League where he spent four seasons with the Lethbrdige Hurricanes. He was the Blackhawks’ first round pick (14th overall) in the

PLINT, Lillian (Lilly) Florence

April 8, 1915 - February 8, 2011

Lilly passed away peacefully in her sleep at West Shore Laylum Care Home. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred Lenard (Len) Plint and sister Violet Marguerite Dorothy and May. Survived by her sister Bonnie and many nieces and nephews. Lilly was born in Sumas Washington and lived a long and independent life. Loved to work in her garden and watching the birds. She will be missed much by her niece Joan. No service by request.

INGLIS, JOHN (Jack) ALEXANDER January 20, 1921 – February 24, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dad, Grampa, Jack. Born and raised in Victoria, BC. Jack was an avid sports enthusiast excelling in all sports but particularly tennis, golf, basketball and swimming. He would often say that when he was young, he and his friend would hop on their bikes with golf clubs on their backs, cycle 10 miles and play 36 holes of golf. Jack started what would be a lifelong career in the electrical distribution business in Victoria, briefly interrupted by service with the RCAF during the second world war. After the service, he moved to Vancouver where he worked for the Northern Electric Company and met his wife of 41 years, Marjorie (Marge). During his 37 year career with Northern Electric, they were transferred many times throughout BC (sometimes twice to the same town) and with each move, plus their involvement with the Kinsmen’s, came many lasting friendships. They travelled often on golf holidays with many of the friends they met over the years. Jack was predeceased by Marge in 1987, his brother, Bill, in 1969 and sister, Marion, in 1994. Jack leaves behind son Mark (Corinne), grandchildren, Chelsea, Carly (Jeff), Rako and great granddaughter Halen. Services will be held Thursday @ 2:00 PM on March 3rd at the United Church, 4960 48th Avenue in Ladner. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, it was Jack’s wish that contributions be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Bamford, Douglas William Ralph F/Sgt., RCAF, Retired

Doug was born May 12, 1917, Vancouver, British Columbia. He grew up with his parents and brother, Alfred, on a homestead outside of Smithers, BC. As a young man, Doug worked in the lumber camps until he went to college in the USA to obtain his Diploma in Aircraft Engineering. By the time he had finished his education, WWII had broken out in Europe. When it became clear that the war was headed toward Britain, Doug joined the Royal Canadian Air Force January 1940, only to be told Canada was not involved in the war at that time. With their permission, in the Summer of 1940 Doug then travelled to Britain and joined the RAF (British Air Force) and served with them, maintaining their aircraft in the north of Scotland. When Canada then decided to send troops into the conflict in 1941, Doug was absorbed back into the RCAF contingent over there. During a weekend furlough in the Summer of 1942, Doug and his best friend travelled from England to Wales, during a blackout, to attend a dance that was being held at the Cinderalla Ballroom in The Mumbles, Swansea. There he met two sisters. He was at once smitten by Irene Young, a young nurse. After, he could not get her out of his mind and knew, with certainty, that she was the one he would spend the rest of his life with. They married in Swansea, March 15, 1943. Once married, Doug could not wait to get Irene to Canada and safety. Arrangements were made for her to travel to Canada and wait for him in Halifax. On leave, he met up with Irene there and made arrangements for her to travel to his parent’s home in Smithers, BC. When the war was over, Doug travelled back to British Columbia to bring his wife and young son, Kenneth, born January 19, 1945 in Prince Rupert, while he was overseas, to Vancouver, BC. While living in Point Grey and working at the Air Force Base on Sea Island, Richmond, their daughter, Claire, was born May 3rd, 1947. Doug’s Air Force career took him and his family back to Britain twice more for several years each time. Between the tours in Britain, at Luffingham then Langar, he served at Camp Shilo, Brandon, Manitoba. While living near Brandon, Doug became a member of the Brandon Masonic Lodge and remained so until his death. In 1955 the family returned to Canada and waited for housing at Sea Island, living there until Doug was transferred to Downsview, Toronto, Ontario in 1962. Spring of 1963, Doug was sent to Yemen, in the Middle East, to be part of a peacekeeping contingent for six months. His job was to keep the aircraft flying while dealing with all the damage the sand did to the engine parts and while dodging bullets that were constantly being fired over the walls that protected the enclave. After returning to Downsview in the late Fall, 1963, Doug worked on the base until his retirement from the Forces in the Summer of 1966. Once retired, Doug and Irene returned to Richmond, BC., where he went to work for Pacific Western Airlines, providing both with the opportunity to once again travel the world, visiting: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, all of continental Europe, Ireland, Japan, England, Wales, Mexico, throughout the USA, spending many winters in Yuma, Arizona. After Arizona, they spent several winters in Aruba (three months each year). When Irene‘s back made it difficult to travel so far, they spent the next couple of winters in Hawaii. They made many friends throughout their travels and they kept in touch with them all each Christmas for many, many years. For so long they had been inseparable, with Doug always by Irene’s side. They had been married for almost 68 years before Irene passed away on December 13, 2010. By that time, the family had already been told that Doug’s health was severely compromised and he would decline rapidly. He had been suffering from the ravages of Parkinson’s Disease and had been legally blind and hearing impaired during the latter part of his life. Doug and Irene had been residents at the KinVillage Care Home, in Tsawwassen, BC during the last several years. After a difficult five weeks dealing with kidney failure, Doug passed away peacefully in his sleep, on January 20, 2011, to once again be with Irene. His daughter, Claire, had been by his side for much of the time after Irene died, making sure that Doug would not be lonely before it was his turn. The staff of the care home were wonderful, supportive and caring during Doug`s stay. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Irene, brother, Alfred, and son, Ken. He is survived by his daughter, Claire (Barry). He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren: Teresa (Bob) Sampson, Jim (Joanne) Kluey, Melissa (Shawn) Kluey, Craig (Sarah) Bamford, and Shannon (Michael) Grey. Also, by his eleven great-grandchildren: Ken, Connor, Jahcoba, Shannon, Lucas, Jaeden, Michael, Raven, Katrina, Trinity, Drake, extended family and many friends. Doug was a loving husband, great Dad, loving Grandpa and GreatGrandpa, knowledgeable co-worker, genius at fixing almost everything and helpful friend. He was a true gentleman, a wonderful role model, and will be sorely missed. A Joint Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011 at All Saints (Ladner) Anglican Church, located at 4755 Arthur Drive, in Ladner; the cross street is Ladner Trunk Road. All are welcome to the service. If you wish to attend the reception, following the celebration, please advise either Claire (604) 940-0236, or Melissa (604) 816-8466, or Terri (604) 940-2918, allowing us to give the caterer a rough head count for refreshments. BENNETT, Catherine “Doreen” 1923 – 2011

With sadness we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of Doreen. She is predeceased by Frederick “George” in 1998. Survived by Norm and Joan, grandchildren Clayton, Rhiannon and Spencer; in the UK, one son, ﬁve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister and many nieces and nephews. Doreen loved her family dearly but was a private person. She always took great pride in her appearance right to the end. She loved to walk around Ladner every day where she lived for the past forty years. She was born in Wales and lived in Ontario, B.C., Brisbane, Australia and the UK. She loved to send cards for all the seasons and birthdays and she loved to receive cards from her nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Thank you to West Shore Laylum staff for their love and attention. Doreen always remarked how great the food was and how kind everyone was. Irene Teresa Bamford (née Young)

Irene was born June 5, 1920 in Swansea, S. Wales, Great Britain. During WWII Irene was a trained member of the Royal Nursing Corps. While on a weekend leave to visit her family in The Mumbles (a small fishing village to the west of Swansea) she attended a dance with her sister, Wynn, at the Cinderella Ballroom, where she met a Young Canadian Airman, Douglas Bamford. They danced, fell in love and were married nine months later, March 15, 1943. A short time later, Irene said goodbye to her Mother, Father and sister, and sailed aboard a troop hospital ship that was bringing wounded Canadian soldiers home. She waited in the Halifax area for Douglas to catch up with her. He then had to return to Britain in the Fall of 1944, while Irene headed west to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. She stayed with Doug`s parents in Smithers, for a while, until after their son, Ken, was born January 19, 1945 in Prince Rupert. When Doug returned to Canada, they moved to Vancouver, BC, living in the Point Grey area, where their daughter, Claire, was born May 3, 1947. As a military family, Irene and Doug had an opportunity to meet and get to know many people at the many bases that they lived on. Irene made many friends wherever they resided. She was often considered the nursein-residence at many of the bases, tending to many a child’s cuts and scrapes and anything else that did not require a physician’s attention. When Doug retired and went to work for Pacific Western Airline they carried on their travelling: going to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Jordan, Israel, Arabia, all of the mainland European countries, Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, Mexico, throughout the U.S.A., then spent many winters as snow birds in Arizona. After Arizona they changed their winter venue to 3 months in Aruba for many years. When it became more difficult for Irene to travel such long distances, they spent their winters in Hawaii for two more years, making friends wherever they went. Irene and Doug were married for almost 68 years before she passed away in her sleep, after a very brief illness and congestive heart failure, on December 13, 2010, at the KinVillage Care Home, in Tsawwassen, where they both lived, with Douglas sleeping in an adjoining room. The staff of the care home were wonderful, supportive and caring during Irene`s stay. Many thanks to the two ladies who came from Delta Hospice on the last evening to sit with Irene during her last moments, while her daughter Claire took a brief break. Irene was predeceased by her son, Ken (Jennifer) and sister, Vera. She was survived by her husband, Douglas, her sister, Wynn, and her daughter, Claire (Barry). She will be sadly missed by her five grandchildren: Teresa (Bob) Sampson, Jim (Joanne) Kluey, Melissa (Shawn) Kluey, Craig (Sarah) Bamford, and Shannon (Michael) Grey.
